UPDATE, 9:57 pm

Tina Richards, the mother of a soldier awaiting his second or third call back to Iraq, who stood in the halls of Congress and was disrespected by Obey of WI:

“Exit” Amendment Would Leave Troops in Iraq Indefinitely

What Harry Reid Doesn’t Know About His Own Bill

By TINA RICHARDS

I attended the MoveOn.org rally on Tuesday night where Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid discussed how they were going to “end the war” and “bring our troops home” with the Levin-Reed Amendment.

When I asked if they meant all the troops, I was quickly told to, “shut up” and muscled aside by security. A fellow Marine Mom was treated in much the same manner and we couldn’t get over how much like the Republicans the “Anti-Escalation” folks were acting.

(Video link:  You Tube Video, Tina & Grassroots America Interviews Harry Reid on the War and impeachment)

I thought maybe I missed something in the Amendment and should reread it to ensure I did not miss anything. Yet an in-depth analysis of the Amendment is not needed in order to find the contradictions.

A quick glance paired with recent statements made by Senator Reid prove that it holds no ambitions of easing the minds of military families and moms who want to know, “how do you choose which of our sons and daughters to abandon in Iraq?”

The Amendment provides for our troops to come home, except for the following three reasons:

(1) Protect United States and Coalition personnel and infrastructure,

(2) Provide logistical support for Iraqi security forces and to

(3) Engage in counter-terrorism operations against international terrorism groups and their local affiliates.

I had an opportunity to ask Leader Reid about how many troops will be abandoned in Iraq. He bluntly stated, “we haven’t spoken to the military yet, at that this stage we don’t know.”

We don’t know? They have pushed and prodded for this Amendment and they don’t know?   [snip]

Lol, those are pretty –

2. Intermittent Bystander - 26 July 2007

Michael Moore is announcing the release of Sicko Health Care Cards on Leno, as we speak. Use them to threaten your HMO with videographic exposure.

Download the PDF of the card below and follow these simple guidelines:

1. Carry the card in your wallet with your insurance card.
2. If denied treatment, show your SiCKO card to your doctor/insurer.
3. Ask your insurer if they’d like to be in Michael Moore’s next movie, DVD, or appear on MichaelMoore.com.
4. Tell them that, if denied, you will seek coverage from your local media.
5. E-mail your story to michael@michaelmoore.com.

3. Intermittent Bystander - 26 July 2007

Moore also just revealed persistent political interference by Harvey Feinstein (a big Hillary supporter) in the pre-release period of Sicko, attempting to get a scene with Hillary cut.

4. marisacat - 26 July 2007

Do you mean Weinstein of Miramax?

5. brinn - 26 July 2007

IB — that was revealed a while back — before the movie even came out. I saw him talking about it with Feinstein on some show…

I like the blackamail, er, SICKO, card though…very cool! 😉

6. Intermittent Bystander - 26 July 2007

Marisacat – Yeah.

brinn – Aha!

7. Intermittent Bystander - 26 July 2007

attempting to get a scene with Hillary cut.

Just to clarify: Might have been a scene discussing her health care plan, with or without her. Not sure. (Dunno, haven’t seen it yet.)

8. marisacat - 26 July 2007

Gumming the war to death! Bang that keyboard! Man that panel!

9. Sabrina Ballerina - 26 July 2007

IB, that’s a great idea by MM. Keeping a score card on them … and I doubt they want him on their cases …. he’s such a rabble rouser, you have to love him …

Hair Club For Men ~ from the last thread, rotfl, I love that handle … so that’s Duncan Black .. I thought he had long hair – I get all of them mixed up …

So maybe he would be willing to contribute to my longed-for ‘maleisssmss series on DK.

*********

Hey, goodnight Bhhm – good posts ….. Kos has made many enemies, mostly because of the thuggery on his site … he forgets, these are people and when you disrespect people as his thugs from the ‘administration’ do every day, it is bound to come back to haunt you sooner or later … they talk to people like dirt at times. They forget they are NOT talking to servants, or to children and they complain when some of those people treat them the same way.

I laughed the other night when I saw a comment calling people her ‘nasty’! Well, no one here started it … and even if we tried, we could never reach the level of nastiness DK is now known for. And it was and is encouraged by kos himself. I’ve personally seen him do it. His administrators are smug, nasty and snide and invite everything that comes their way. What did think? That only they have a right to be ‘nasty’? Lol! Talk about reality based world.

Be careful how you treat people on the way up. you may meet them on the way down

Now, they are appealing for people to rally around …. well, the independent blogs they dropped from their blogroll and then told to stop whining, don’t need them anymore, why should they rally around them? And people like Cindy Sheehan and those who were appalled at their treatment of her there, why should any of them care what happens to DK?

They do realize this, so they are attempting to appeal to fear that all bloggers are being threatened so we are all in this together. Well, I don’t think the Independent blogs have much to fear … and I think if they were threatened, they WOULD rally around each other since there has not been the record of nastiness and abuse that is associated with DK.

In the end, he’ll get the support of how ever many loyalists there are on his site, and I don’t there are that many …. and his rightwing friends … that’s about it imo.

10. Hair Club for Men - 26 July 2007

They do realize this, so they are attempting to appeal to fear that all bloggers are being threatened so we are all in this together.

They’re actually not totally wrong about this. It’s a clear message to smaller “liberal” (or should I say “democratic”) bloggers that if you cross a certain line, Fox could attack you too.

Kos isn’t going to be hurt by an O’Reilly attack. But I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be that soldier those wingnuts are going after right now.

FWIW, I used to post on Kos. I’m a rather novel case. I didn’t get banned. I banned myself. When the attacks on Cindy Sheehan started, I got so disgusted by it, I took my e-mail address out of my profile. I opened up notepad, typed in some random characters, went to my Kos “profile” page, opened up the change passworld box, then cut and pasted the random characters into the box for the new password. Then I deleted the notepad file so I wouldn’t be able to retreive the password. I now don’t have the option of posting to the Daily Kos. I highly recommend it.

On the other hand, Elise’s daughter is pretty cute….

11. Sabrina Ballerina - 26 July 2007

Re being banned from dk, not so novel, a lot of people on this blog were not banned either, just saw it for it what it was, saw others being mistreated and banned, and went elsewhere, disgusted by the behavior of the troll patrols. So, aside from the thousands they’ve banned (according to their own stats) who knows how many thousands have left in disgust, as have several on this blog. And those thousands talk to others etc. So yes, he could have had goodwill from those thousands of people. Some are well-known writers and activists. All are progressives, as far as I know …

There are far more effective ways to moderate a site, even a very big one … his is one of the worst possible ways.

I agree with you regarding the treatment of Cindy Sheehan, it was horrible … but no worse than the way they have treated many others. Now, they are scared to death that people think she was banned. Well too bad. They were screaming for her to be banned and in effect, she was. She could not post there without being harassed and the administration approved how she was treated ..

Dhinmi was in Rusty’s thread a few days ago, anad MB and Barb, frantic that someone might misinterpret Rusty’s diary to mean Cindy had been banned … The Guardian apparently reported that she was. Well, they have to live with the consequences of how they treat people. For some reason, they expect people to sympathize with them when they get blowback from their abuse.

As for Fox sending a message to liberal blogs, yes, I remember the attacks of rightwing trolls on several of the blogs I started out on … some were even shut down …. but that was five years ago, we’ve all learned a lot since then.

Kos wants a media empire, most people online believe the strength of the Internet is in its ability to spread information. I prefer the idea of thousands of smaller blogs doing that, to counter the MSM. If there are thousands doing it, it will be harder to attack them all. It will be like the newspaper business …. thousands of them, but telling the truth.

I want to read writers like Dahr Jamail and Robert Fisk and others who are actually journalists risking a lot to tell the truth. But you will never see tham on DK, unless a diarist links to them. The content is very controlled there. So, to be honest, I don’t care what happens to them and I don’t think it will stop the flow of information. After what information do we get from DK? They really do not have much news, they link to stuff I’ve usually read long before they post it.

12. Hair Club for Men - 26 July 2007

I’m trying to figure out what the hostility to Chavez is all about. It can’t be because he called Bush the “devil”.

Sure he didn’t renew some right wing TV station’s license. Big deal. That happens all the time everywhere in the world. What else has he done?

It’s not as if he actually bombed a TV station the way Wesley Clark did.

I’m also trying to figure out why the Kos Zionazi brigade seems especially intent on pushing the “Cindy Met Chavez” line. Jay Elias seems to come close to a nervous breakdown every time he mentions it. OK, I could see if Cindy went to the Gaza Strip to visit the grave of Rachel Corrie or something but Venezuala? What does it have to do with Israel? It’s on the other side of the world. Did the Israelis have investments in Venezuala that got nationalized or something?

In the end though the problem is the Scoop software. It eliminates the need to refute an argument or make one of your own. It’s all a numbers game.

13. marisacat - 26 July 2007

I think the right in America (and plenty of stupid crossover) resent him as he appears he may be another Castro.

Seems the fundie factions and missionaries are not high on his list either… so I suspect that is crossover into right winger xtianist and thus their israeli partners.

That old congealing fuckball.

14. bayprairie - 26 July 2007

It’s a clear message to smaller “liberal” (or should I say “democratic”) bloggers that if you cross a certain line, Fox could attack you too.

that’s twice you’ve said something similar. you must be hanging around the wrong smaller blogs.

On the other hand, Elise’s daughter is pretty cute….

if elise has a daughter, she’d most certainly have to be underage.

so go fuck yourself.

15. liberalcatnip - 26 July 2007

From that Stauber link, this quote from kos’ book:

The Netroots activist, much like the new generation of grassroots activist, is fiercely partisan, fiercely multi-issue, and focused on building a broader movement. It’s not an ideological movement – there is actually very little, issue-wise, that unites most modern party activists except, perhaps, opposition to the Iraq War, (although opposition to the war seems to be uniting the entire country as of late).

Some of the most fiery activists are definitely not “fiercely partisan”. And just how far has that big-tentiness gotten you, kos?

if elise has a daughter, she’d most certainly have to be underage.

He was probably referring to her sister who was in that flickr pic with Elise (last thread).

16. liberalcatnip - 26 July 2007

Hair Club,

Chavez and Israel:

Israel is withdrawing its ambassador to Venezuela as a row grows between the two countries over the war in Lebanon.

At the weekend President Hugo Chavez recalled his envoy to Israel and described the Jewish state’s campaign in Lebanon as a “new genocide”.

On Monday Israel said it would be flying its ambassador back for “consultations”.

The BBC correspondent in Caracas says the row marks an all-time low in relations between the two governments.

Mr Chavez has railed against Israel in interviews and statements in recent days, describing its offensive in Lebanon as “genocide”.

“Israel has gone mad,” he said in a weekly broadcast on Sunday.

“It’s attacking, doing the same thing to the Palestinian and Lebanese people that they have criticized – and with reason – the Holocaust. But this is a new Holocaust.”

Venezuela’s leading Jewish organisation has criticised government representatives and the government-backed media for making anti-Semitic statements.

Bushco, shaping the world so other countries don’t have to.

U.S. to Announce Nuclear Exception for India

WASHINGTON, July 26 — Three years after President Bush urged global rules to stop additional nations from making nuclear fuel, the White House will announce on Friday that it is carving out an exception for India, in a last-ditch effort to seal a civilian nuclear deal between the countries.

And: $159 million dollars to Israel for ballistic missile defence.

Raking in the contracts for his military industrial complex buddies in any way he can before he leaves office.

I don’t know. Maybe. But don’t send Chris Hansen after me yet. She doesn’t really look underage to me.

Elise (elise) and Whitney

so go fuck yourself.

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the rock.

that’s twice you’ve said something similar. you must be hanging around the wrong smaller blogs.

I’m honestly not sure why you’re angry about this. I’m not even sure what you mean. O’Reilly’s obviously trying to send a message that if you cross a certain line he can target you. Kos’ politics aren’t that different from O’Reilly’s. They both admire Goldwater and Reagan. They both hate people who wear giant puppets at anti-war rallies. So essentially O’Reilly’s taking a very large, non leftist site and attacking it as a leftist site. People who read it who really are leftists are probably getting the message.

21. supervixen - 27 July 2007

I agree with Hair Club about O’Reilly targeting DKos because it’s more mainstream than left. Overton Window and all that. However he’s also targeting the site because of the YKos conference which the Dem candidates will be attending. O’Reilly wouldn’t be giving two shits about the idiot Clockwork Orange place if he didn’t see it as a way to attack the Dem candidates.

So, you know, the DK establishment should have expected this – they really really really wanted to go “big time” and this is what happens when you go “big time”. And there are plenty of offensive comments that have been made on DKos that can be used against them – as BHHM has mentioned. Nobody is going to care about “Oh it was only one commenter, it doesn’t represent the views of the entire site” yadda yadda.

I have to ask you, Hair Club, did you speak out on DKos in any way against the Sheehan bashing?

Because I’ve received masses of emails from DKos members who have praised and supported me, etc. when I was being attacked – but with very few exceptions, they were too scared to say anything on the site.

The hell with that shit.

22. Hair Club for Men - 27 July 2007

I have to ask you, Hair Club, did you speak out on DKos in any way against the Sheehan bashing?

I did before the big blowout. But I had “banned myself” very early after Sheehan announced her run against Pelosi precisely because I didn’t want to get caught up in a long ongoing flamewar about Cindy Sheehan. I had wound my participation in that site down to almost nothing and I didn’t want something to draw me back in. Maybe this was selfishness on my part. I dunno.

Had it been usenet or a more neutral site, I probably would have been more tenacious about it. But since the Sheehan bashers had the front pagers’ approval, getting into a fight about it would have been a bit like going on O’Reilly and defending Cindy Sheehan. Why play in a rigged game?

And there are plenty of offensive comments that have been made on DKos that can be used against them – as BHHM has mentioned.

True. The site has a very hostile, very negative atmosphere, kind of like a long running usenet flamewar. But It’s pretty obviously not a “hate site”. Once again, I think it’s the Scoop software. I think a lot of the people I’d hate on DK are people I’d probably like in person.

23. JJB - 27 July 2007

Hair Club for Men,

Like you, I “banned” myself, simply stopped posting comments, and deleted every single diary entry I’d posted over the years. I was a sporadic DE poster, partly because I was sick of spending 30-120 minutes preparing something that got lost in the flood of pointless trivia people would put up, and also because I got sick of Kos and Armando putting up FP posts that stole my work without giving me any credit. Still, I’d done well over one hundred in two years time, so it took a lot of effort to wipe them all out. If I’d been able to erase my comments I would have. However, since I was a TU of very long standing, I was still able to troll rate for a good while, and took advantage of this to hand out doughnuts to deserving parties, and rescue unfairly hidden comments. One night when mcjoan and Armando were doing their Thread Thug With The Double Back act I decided “what the hell,” and after some 15 minutes of uprating comments they were troll rating, and troll rating them (deservedly, I might add) I suddenly lost my ability to rate and knew that I’d been banned. Incidentally, they used to claim they didn’t have the power to do this, which my experience shows was a lie.

This DK/O’Reilly thing is really like those wrestling shows on the USA Network, completely phony and best ignored.

24. BooHooHooMan - 27 July 2007

If you would have told me that GWB could defeat Gore not once but get re-elected against Kerry, I’d have said you’re nuts. Having Learned from her campaign I would have said that the Dems would have gone 24/7 with Richard’s “born with a silver foot in his mouth” ,Actually DONE some research, and had the jugular instinct to go after his Texas Guard, and DUI record. He could have been displayed as a privileged, draft dodging sod, quite happy to be snorting blow off the tits of (most importantly) young white girls.(not the cliched strippers,no, the debaucherist should have been plopped right down during bible study in Middle America’s humble abode.

from SV- O’Reilly wouldn’t be giving two shits about the idiot Clockwork Orange place if he didn’t see it as a way to attack the Dem candidates.

In an orange nutshell. All true. The reality is – the wack-job is on to something, though.Dem Elite’s whined that they were being called Dem Elite’s throughout the Eighties, all the while losing elections while such charges resonated with the people. Right or wrong, Swiftboats spoke to something false -something quite apart from the medals issue, a mere inlet to the underlying reality: Swiftboat charges vs. SlowBoat response. The proxy over a matter of authenticity overshadowed the events of thirty years past. The people chose an authentic moron over disingenuous intellect. Clinton’s case was an exception thanks to Ross Perot.

Gore as wood puppet the same, Dukakis before him in a tank was perhaps the most inauthentic use of mil-pander ’til “Mission Accomplished” came along.

My point is this – I think Now more than ever – (perhaps fitting in these surreal times to borrow a Nixon campaign Phrase) the DP ,its hopefuls, it’s operatives are most vulnerable to the charge of the empty package, the empty suit, the hypocrites, pandering for pork prerogatives to blabiterate along a al Agnew’s assholery.

25. colleen - 27 July 2007

From the previous thread:

They have pissed off and isolated seasoned activists that have been involved in boycotts and squeeze plays for thirty years and more.

I’ll say.

It’s funny that kos operation was sold under the assumed identity of “cutting edge’” “progressive” and “liberal”. He’s goin down for it because some hardhitting folks know he’s not, while other’s (the wingers) don’t give a shit if he is or not. The limb is going to be sawn off. Slowly.

I hope you’re right about this. Congressional approval ratings are nearing single digits and it’s not because Rahm Emmanual and Ed Kilgore are effective strategists ancd it’s certainly not because the Democratic party hires people like Dana Houle, Dick Morris and RonK.

Markos and his front pagers are quintessential ‘centrists’ and the above dilemma describes the strategic corner ‘centrist’ Democrats have been painting themselves (and, incidently, us) into for the past 20 years or more. It was a good run for the sons of bitches, they made a lot of money and have almost destroyed the country doing so.

26. JJB - 27 July 2007

W/R/T whether or not the BBBs ought to have a waiver from the FEC, have a look at what Duncan Black was up to 3 years ago:

The following message from Atrios was emailed to DCCC supporters earlier today. To contribute to Atrios’ Campaign for a New Majority and support the DCCC, visit http://www.democraticaction.org/atrios/.

People frequently ask me where they should be sending their donations with Election Day fast approaching. Whether they can give a little or a lot, they want to know that they’re spending their money wisely and doing the most they are able to do to help end the era of Republican control in Washington.

What I tell them is that while there are many worthy candidates and organizations out there who are fighting as hard as they can to make sure that Democrats will be in charge again, there’s only one organization that gets to hold a few ace cards up its sleeve:

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)[.]

[snip]

Every race matters, and every dollar counts. Right now it’s absolutely vital that the DCCC can go head to head with the right wing spin machine and come out on top.

[snip]

Please do what you can to help support the DCCC in its Campaign for a New Majority. Do what you can to help make sure that Nancy Pelosi will henceforth be referred to as Speaker Pelosi. With less than 27 days until the election, do what you can to help us take back the House and take back America!

Note that in the last sentence, there is no attempt to separate himself from the DCCC.

27. marisacat - 27 July 2007

Well shortly before Ykos last year is when a lot broke (TNR/Zengerle and Nat Review, both) as well. I am sure that is nto lost on Kos and the Koslings….

LOL His problem is it will never be simple who is behind the coordination. And O Reilly does not operate in a vacuum. Nor are all his friends wingers, nutcases and Republicans. He was welcomed warmly and was very comfortable at the Four Seasons party Bill gave for the Terry McAuliffe book. One of the most laughable, gut tickling fake-outs around lately has been the online jihad agaisnt Fox News, the widespread calling out of the CBC, etc. What a joke that has been.

28. colleen - 27 July 2007

Upon re-reading #25 I would like to correct ‘it’s certainly not because the Democratic party hires people like Dana Houle, Dick Morris and RonK’ by removing the ‘not’..

That said, the sort term blip is undoubtedly favorable to the DP. But not the slam dunk these people think is theirs for the slamming if they can only just avoid the fuckups of campaigns past.

Their mantra of “if they can only just avoid” IS THE FUCKING PROBLEM.

“if they can only just avoid” women/ the vocal minorities/ the gays/ the peaceniks etc……How to look “compassionate and conservative” has been the DEMOCRAT’S M.O. as verily as it has been the GOP’s recently. The record of DP social action are laurels sat on far too long. They are laurels embedded so far up the ass of those with “impeccable progressive credentials” that they’re not even visible to the lesser human carbon forms circling the bowl. Which is pretty much everyone of us who values a free and equitable society. Some of us are better fed, yet aware of our common position in the vortex. The DP incumbancy and their operatives could give a shit that they’re dumping on “their own” as long as they’re regular. (i.e. – re-elected…which is where withholding the vote comes in…)

“if they can only just avoid”being seen as ________
fill in the erroneous concern

“if they can only just avoid” an ensuing operational debate who’s get’s resources, influenc,e how, and why within the Party…

“if they can only just avoid” further questions into the inequity and why their performance is so low that reasonable people wonder if “the fix is in”.

The long term trend lines don’t look good. If I understand it correctly, and Ted Koppel is to be believed, he reported that a General Staff Officer & top brass advisor to Hillary Clinton’s campaign said that Hillary expected US troops to be in Iraq till the end of a prospective TWO TERM Clinton presidency– that’s 2016

“if they can only just avoid” looking weak wrap your mind around that irony for a sec as I repeat—-
“if they can only just avoid” looking weak on Defense.
or rather,
“if they can only just avoid” looking TOO EAGER to cash in on Defense for THEMSELVES

Salute and…..salud!
What’s the Fucking Difference, honestly??
The velocity that one gets non -consentually fucked in the ass??

The boldness with which common prerogatives are revoked by a concentration of power and wealth that it is now reaching critical mass???

Madman had an awesome piece last night in the previous thread at #’s110 and 113…the trend lines don’t look good despite the media carnival gamesmen setting up the milk bottles for another round of Three for a Dollar in the hopeful come-on of “Is the country leaning to the Left?”

From Watergate to the Reagan Ascendancy – FIVE YEARS.
Yeh, Markos is ushering in the Age of Aquarius all right.

Blast Kills 11 Near Pakistan’s Red Mosque

Earlier, security forces stood by as protesters clambered onto the roof of the mosque and daubed red paint on the walls after forcing a government-appointed cleric assigned to lead prayers to retreat.

The protesters demanded the return of the mosque’s pro-Taliban former chief cleric, Abdul Aziz — who is being detained by the government — and shouted slogans against President Gen. Pervez Musharraf. Later, a cleric from a seminary associated with the mosque led the prayers.

“Musharraf is a dog! He is worse than a dog! He should resign!” students shouted. Some lingered over the ruins of a neighboring girls’ seminary that was demolished by authorities this week. Militants had used the seminary to resist government forces involved in the siege.

Friday’s reopening was meant to help cool anger over the siege, which triggered a flare-up in militant attacks on security forces across Pakistan. Public skepticism still runs high over the government’s accounting of how many people died in the siege, with many still claiming a large number of children and religious students were among the dead. The government says the overwhelming majority were militants

33. Sabrina Ballerina - 27 July 2007

Hair Club – I doubt O’Reilly is sending any message to small, liberal blogs …. or even larger ones. If he is, well, I think it’s lost on them.

I think it’s way more simple than that … they have made many, many people extremely angry, O’Reilly is always looking for material. All it would take is for someone to call his producers with some comments he could use against them. The hook to get him interested would be that the Dem. Candidates are going to be in Chicago, and/or the sponsorship of Jetblue.

If there was no direct involvement of the candidates and Jetblue, even if somone sent him material, I doubt he’d be interested … I have no fear for Independent blogs who dispense information in a truthful way .. they’ve been around longer than DK and are not into the money angle and access that DK is. And the more of them the better …. unless they make money their primary goal, as kos appears to have done, I think they’ll be fine and do a far better job than DK which suppresses rather than spreads information.

The site has a very hostile, very negative atmosphere, kind of like a long running usenet flamewar. But It’s pretty obviously not a “hate site”. Once again, I think it’s the Scoop software. I think a lot of the people I’d hate on DK are people I’d probably like in person.

I don’t know, they don’t hate blacks maybe, but they sure hate liberals and ‘dirty hippies’ with a passion, the way Ronald Reagan et al hated them according to what I’ve read about him.

As far as liking any of them in person, sure, there are still some great people there, but cowardly bullies are not people I could ever like and sorry, scoop does not account for the behavior. It is limited to a small number of people who obviously have serious personality disorders making them useful tools for kos who thinks the way to silence people is to act like a mini-dictator, and never in an even-handed way … things are what they are, cannot be sugar-coated.

34. Sabrina Ballerina - 27 July 2007

Awesome post, Bhhm, #30 … so true, most of all they are working hard to avoid their base …. we need a new party. Or at least people working in every state to elect Indepenents. I honestly believe 2008 is the year independents could win big, in Congressional races and without all that much money either. That’s where local, or state blogs could help … imo.

Lol, I’m sure just knowing about the coffee and pastry meet-up is sending chills down the spines of rightwingers everywhere …

Asia Times:

[A] contact in Rawalpindi familiar with goings-on in the capital’s twin city, which is home to the military’s top brass, told Asia Times Online on condition of anonymity of Musharraf’s desperate efforts to speak to Washington at the highest level and request some breathing space.

According to the contact, Washington insisted that Islamabad press on relentlessly by military means against Taliban and al-Qaeda assets in Pakistan, saying that NATO would be supportive. Apparently, a personal request by Musharraf to speak to US President George W Bush about being given time for matters to cool off was declined.

In effect, Washington is brushing aside Musharraf’s concerns over an extremist backlash of momentous proportions should foreign forces join in the fray in the tribal areas, let alone threaten the general’s hold on power. [snip]

As far as liking any of them in person,

This of course is where the rubber meets the road. Given the superficiality, the very low bar for social engagement set particularly in “at first blush” impressions, sure, I would probably say they’re “nice”

Small stakes though . I can learn far more about someone in seeing how he/she really treats others—than by any of the normal social courtesies exchanged.

Disingenuous people suck.
Pack Mentality People suck.
Frat Boys suck.
People trade on croneyism suck.
Anal obsessive “rules” people suck.
They suck.

Seriously though, this Oreilly thing is not going away The tactic of guilt by association is as old as the hills…, (Claims of anecdotalism aside)the Goopers are more than willing to associate the whole D slate with the insanity on kos The reason the “under attack” mode is soooo shrill is because they ARE vulnerable to the charge. Now, LOL you have a panicked mcjoan and FP’ers thrashing in the water giving themselves bloody noses. ..as the NewsCorp sharks move in…

Here, they’ve gone and modeled their whole gig on an “in your face” RW noise machine minus the GOP activism. Brilliant!

Jeesus , Where “we” have a Hunter on kos, the Rethugs have BEASTS who are Gatherers. “Our” erstwhile Hunters are so attached to their little verbal pin pricks, they hardly notice being dragged off by the GOP mastadon, all the while gettin’ the thumbs up from Harry Reid and the” I can see you in the crowd despite blinding spotlights” point and wave from Nancy. “Hang on!” “Catch up with you LATER!” Nancy and Harry yell encouragingly….It’s apparently enough to see the sparkle in their eyes…

After such a model of all “talk” but no “walk”, all “shoot yer mouth off” noise machine with no action or allied activism, they expect to cry foul when they get punched in the mouth???

They continue to be shocked, beaten to new lows by Bush’s boldness.

I don’t like them online after having a chance to “know” them…
In Real Life? Using White Ass Rules of Ettiquette? Must be, since -despite MB’s nonsense- they’re ghosts in “the streets” (Markos,FP’s Admins) …They’d say I was nice, I’d say “nice talking to you” in a manner indistinguisable from genuinely felt appreciation, and I’d excuse myself citing “other commitments”. Then I’d keep the kid and the dog from their end of the street, proceed to marginalize their influence while I methodically ran them out of town. LOL. Just kidding – the dog goes where he wants…

Things are pretty bad in Pakistan … I wonder why this administration appears to be abandoning their so-called ally?

Have to laugh at the much talked-about rules on dk. It seems EndersRS from Redstate, had previously trolled the site as a liberal-hater, been auto-banned several times and returned under different handles only to be banned again. But then apparently, after Swords-Crossed was started by Armando and his rightwing buddy, Enders returned to DK once again, this time ready to participate ‘constructivel’y’

He’s been in the I/P diaries apparently and people are now a bit disturbed that a ‘banned-rightwing-troll’, not once but multiple times, is still there whle there is zero tolerance of PROGRESSIVES who simple ask questions!

I hope when troll kops Elise, DHinMi, MissLaura, Taylormattd, Clonecone, Musings et al are on their rounds, waving their FAQs around, they will be able to explain the double/triple/quadruple standard of DK. What a totally corrupt place it is …. and I’m sure Enders is not the only rightwinger there with special privileges. We do know of one more, FPer Darksyde …. how many more?

Oh and LarryinNYC loves Enders too, met him at a NYC meetup and they are both total Israel supporterds …

So, it seems with the revelation that rightwing trolls who broke the rules multiple times, were banned multiple times, surely there will be many re-instatements of accounts????

BarbinMd likes Enders too and doesn’t want him banned ….. can’t wait to see them go after progressives simply for wanting Bush impeached.

More and more I am convinced, they are RIGHTWINGERS! And that is why they freak out when people wonder out loud why they want to protect Bush et al from consequences. People wondering about that are pretty close to figuring it out …. sure, they have a few ‘liberal’ positions …. but they are NOT a progressive site.

If they are collecting names …. I think we can help and I do think it should be a project. Each time the troll kops appear on the scene, the list could be linked to. Their rules are a major joke, which we already knew. After all DHinMi and elise and MissL are still there ..

I’m hoping diarist is allowed to stay, though my support isn’t purely unselfish, of course. Just a moment of your time to explain, please.

If I’m understanding this correctly:

Diarist was autobanned under a previous account for trolling.
Diarist created 2-3 more handles in order to troll and was autobanned 2-3 more times for trolling.
Diarist was banned by an admin eventually.
Diarist returns under a 4th handle, with an apology and based on your comment, there’s a strong possibility that he’ll be allowed to stay.
I’ve compiled a short-list of people who qualify for reinstatement if any of the candidates post an apology:

MSOC
Curmudgiana
umakhalil
sabbah
fairleft
shergald
hrh
carl nyberg
eileen flemming
richter
red tulip
realitybites
francisholland

It’s very late and I can’t think of any more names at this time. Since you’re an admin, do you mind posting a diary in support of reinstating the names I’ve listed above? And that’ll also give everyone here, including me, a bit more time to forward lists of potential reinstatements to you.

Please do let me know if there’s any assistance I can provide. My services are at your disposal.

44. D. Throat - 27 July 2007

I just wanted to add on to something MMitM quoted yesterday that was linked to a post I quoted last week… and neither will ever be diaried on DK:

But history, as always, likely will teach a different lesson. Consider two events in that regard. The first happened after – and because of – the 1929 Crash: The Glass Steagall Act of 1933 mandated the separation of bank types according to their business, after the Senate-led Pecora Commission investigation of the crash found that collusion between commercial and investment banks played a major role in it. That act stood for 66 years, until none other than Bill Clinton repealed it in 1999, and here we are again.

Compare the coming collapse of the market and this time the GOP will be right in pointing the finger at something B. Clinton. To which I think he is very proud to usher in a new elite of wealthy crooks.

The Richest of the Rich, Proud of a New Gilded Age

By LOUIS UCHITELLE
Corrections Appended

The tributes to Sanford I. Weill line the walls of the carpeted hallway that leads to his skyscraper office, with its panoramic view of Central Park. A dozen framed magazine covers, their colors as vivid as an Andy Warhol painting, are the most arresting. Each heralds Mr. Weill’s genius in assembling Citigroup into the most powerful financial institution since the House of Morgan a century ago.

His achievement required political clout, and that, too, is on display. Soon after he formed Citigroup, Congress repealed a Depression-era law that prohibited goliaths like the one Mr. Weill had just put together anyway, combining commercial and investment banking, insurance and stock brokerage operations. A trophy from the victory — a pen that President Bill Clinton used to sign the repeal — hangs, framed, near the magazine covers.

These days, Mr. Weill and many of the nation’s very wealthy chief executives, entrepreneurs and financiers echo an earlier era — the Gilded Age before World War I — when powerful enterprises, dominated by men who grew immensely rich, ushered in the industrialization of the United States. The new titans often see themselves as pillars of a similarly prosperous and expansive age, one in which their successes and their philanthropy have made government less important than it once was.

The Clintons may call it the “Gilded Age” but to everyone else it is beginning to look like the “Depression”

Do we really want more of Rubinomics in the Whitehouse????

45. D. Throat - 27 July 2007

But this is the scariest part of that piece:

The new titans often see themselves as pillars of a similarly prosperous and expansive age, one in which their successes and their philanthropy have made government less important than it once was.

Gee that sure does sound a lot like Grover Norquist “No government” agenda… as MCat likes to say this is all a congealing fuckball… DLC corporatist aligned with right wing corporatist… makes one feel all cozy and warm that they are rapidly looting the country bringing on another depression…. gee thanks Bill … where is my pen???

dk crashing their own gates to find themselves inside.

as for chavez, despite his bush tweaking and aid to the populace, he seems to be sliding into typical authortarian mode:

“How long are we going to allow a person – from any country in the world – to come to our own house to say there’s a dictatorship here, that the president is a tyrant, and nobody does anything about it?… It cannot be allowed – it is a question of national dignity,”

so he’s expelling “critics” – which is not the sign of progress.
and his shutting down “right wing” tv stations is a debatable choice.

there’s no leader in any county today who i think is that admirable. sad. but typical.

bill oreilly is karma biting dailykos in the ass.

And they continue to smear her on their site, and have the gall to complain about people refusing to shut up about them and their tactics.

And she has not been the only one … they have gone after sites like TO and others, and refuse to acknowledge any site that is not part of the BBB ‘brand’. They are attempting to take over and control the entire liberal blogosphere and act as ‘gate-keepers’ for ‘Party Politics’ hoping to render those smaller Independent blogs irrelevant… and as Bayprairie said, are a far greater threat to small, Independent liberal blogs than O’Reilly ever was or will be. It is a scare tactic, that will not work, btw.

If you want to see how they exclude great progressive writers and sites, and information, watch who they link to. All of them, Armando at TL, DK, MYDD, they link to each other and a few approved publications. Not approved is Dahr Jamail eg …. too much truth there and humanity for the DK ‘model’.

Iow, they are frauds, posing as a progressive site, and have already proven themselves to be more of a threat to Indepenent sites than O’Reilly, Hannity and Rush together.

FT on sub prime collapse and illiquidity (not behind a wall). They touch on the issues I used Schechter’s News Dissector and his linked article to point up, the Bear Stearns funds that wiped out.

[M]arc Chandler, currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York, says: “While tighter credit is a concern, we posit that conditions are simply returning to a more ‘normal’ level after ‘abnormally’ loose conditions over the past few years.”

Practitioners on the ground in the credit market find it hard to be so sanguine. Rather than an orderly correction, they confront a situation where the market for riskier forms of credit seems to have come to a complete halt. US issuance of high-yield, or low-quality, debt stayed below $1bn for the third successive week, according to Thomson Financial. The last week of June brought $9.7bn of high-yield issuance; by last week that had fallen to $322m. This financing is crucial for private equity deals.

“The cancellation of high-yield deals and the inability of the large banks to syndicate their leveraged loans is causing the credit markets to shut down,” says T. J. Marta, strategist at RBC Capital Markets. “Something has to give here: either equities have to give it up or credit is going to implode.

“We knew this was coming,” he adds, “and the question is whether we reach a critical mass that causes a financial seizure or an economic event.” He says the next six to eight weeks, usually a quiet time for markets as many traders take their vacations, will be critical.

….a new survey offers a warning to all politicians that the American people have entered this campaign with a wholly cynical view of the political process. [snip]

The Battleground Poll is a long-running bipartisan project that has regularly taken the temperature of the electorate. The newest report, issued by Republican Brian Tringali of the Tarrance Group and Democrat Celinda Lake of Lake Research Partners, includes several startling indicators of a political system in distress.

[snip]

Even more striking was the answer to the question of whether Americans believe their own member of Congress puts partisan politics ahead of constituents’ interests. Fully 71 percent said partisan politics and 63 percent strongly hold that view.

Because Americans generally hold their own member of Congress in much higher regard than they do the institution — and still do by most estimates — the answer to that question shocked the team that produced the survey.

Lake called it “downright flabbergasting and a very, very serious warning” to all politicians that the national political environment is highly unstable. “It’s a warning to all the candidates that they have to straddle these two worlds: effectiveness and not being an insider,” she said. [snip]……

The other finding of note in the Battleground Poll was growing disenchantment with Democrats in Congress. Tringali called it “an awfully short honeymoon” for a party that just took over the House and Senate in January. Lake noted, “Voters voted for change and still haven’t gotten that.”

The clash between Obama and Clinton may make good sense to those in the middle of it, but the survey provided a timely reminder that the landscape in this campaign is extraordinarily unstable. Points scored today may make candidates and their handlers feel good today, but there could well be a long-term cost in deepening attitudes among voters who already hold these politicians in low regard.

…Note in particular that not a single one of them [Nation commentators] made any differentiation between Venezuela and the other countries in the list [Cuba, North Korea, Syria, Iran]. And as you can see, Corn and van den Heuvel actually went so far as to adopt the mainstream propaganda frame with regard to Venezuela–directly conflating the Chavez government (oops, sorry, “regime”) with the other governments (oops, sorry, “others of that ilk”), and blithely ignoring its repeatedly-established democratic credentials, its uncontested popularity with the Venezuelan people, and its progressive policies. Anything that smacks of decree is, ahem, a red flag of course, but I still can’t stop thinking about the dynamics of the situation in light of all that fucking oil and his Repayment five years early of IMF World Bank loans, followed by his announcement that Venezuela was withdrawing from the IMF and severing ties to the world bank and insteadFunding it’s own regional Development Bank with Petro Dollars.

The reality with Chavez is that his very real international opposition doesn’t even have the pretense of equity concerns for the masses.in Venezuala. They would see him dead in a blink and be quite content to perpetually operate a country of peasants and wage slaves. If ever there is a country ripe for all out war it is Venezuala. I can’t believe all these bolded headlines about “plans for getting out of Iraq”–as if it meant soon. There should always be contingency plans. Ok, well, except for the aftermath of when you pre-emptively invade a country.

Hillary is just signalling Gates what she wants towards the end of her second glorious term.

I’m not accustomed to flat-out begging, but I’m going to do it out of necessity.

EBay’s screwup last week cost YearlyKos thousands of dollars. We have been forced to re-launch the fundraising auction from $0, and do it over the course of only 3 days. We have until Monday to try to recoup our losses.

He/she didn’t provide any facts or figures to back up that claim.

Sanuk is a Thai word for fun (amusing, cheerful, joyful, etc.), and there’s a California sandal company by the same name. At DK, Sanuk has a UID of 66Ksomething and appears to be from Sarasota.

Cheryl at MLW posted the auction results diary as a fundraising notion for emsock, and peeder (nose twitching for kos-related tax dirt) and cityduck (urging caution) started playing follow-the-money from there.

They went after Greg Palast also for filming near some Oil Company in Texas where he found a Katrina Refugess basically being held in a detention camp … they sent Homeland Security after him … they have so much to hide …. maybe this is why Congress won’t go after them … they are afraid of what might happen to them.

Btw, there was a post, maybe in the last thread, re an Israeli ‘security’ company getting a contract to install security systems. A couple of years ago it was revealed that an Israeli Security Co. was hired to install Congress’ phone systems etc. Questions were raised as to why an American Co. was not hired for a sensitive job. But I never heard any more about it.

Michael Moore said on Thursday that the Bush administration has served him with a subpoena regarding his trip to Cuba during the making of his new film, “Sicko,” reports United Press International

Is there any reason for anyone to answer a subpoena anymore? How about a huge demonstration with people from across the country who have been subpoenaed, outside the WH, throwing their subpoenas on a bonfire? I think that would be a great symbolic act of Civil Disobedience. And no one should respond to them until Bush does …

I assumed that the younger woman was “Elise’s” daughter. But I am informed that she is Elise’s sister. My bad. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

But that’s what I get for attempting to deflect my obvious homoerotic attraction to Duncan Black (so torrid and passionate that I have even taken a user name in his honor) by making a passing remark about Elise’s SISTER. Seriously, who can think straight when he’s got the vision of the ultra sexy proprietor of Atrios Esachaton.

The reality with Chavez is that his very real international opposition doesn’t even have the pretense of equity concerns for the masses.in Venezuala.

Oh Chavez has a bit of an authoritarian side. That’s what military officers are like. Anybody pushing a Wesley Clark for President line should keep that in mind. And he/she should also remember that while Chavez shut down a TV station, Wesley Clark bombed a TV station. Deny my license renewal request or kill me? Hmm. Which shall I chose.

On the other hand, in terms of Latin American human rights abusers over the last 20 years, Chavez isn’t even in the top 100. Even now, why aren’t we talking about Ulises Ruiz. He makes Chavez look like a saint.

re: #94 and xing off laws:

Bush Asserts a King’s Prerogative

As for Chavez, he is the duly-elected head of state of a democratic country. He has survived at least one coup attempt, a coup attempt that was cheerleaded and supported by the tv station he shut down, a station who’s licensing period was up. Chavez’ gov’t didn’t renew the license. No tanks, no armed goons. He used the country’s laws against his political opponents, opponents who had, it could be argued, committed treason against their duly-elected head-of-state.

I’m not saying he’s a saint. There are no saints. I’m not saying he’s a savior or a perfect champion of Democracy … the world hasn’t seen one of those yet. What I am saying is that Chavez has, from what I can read from perspectives left, right and center, operated within the legal boundaries and the Constitution of his country. Our last several heads of state haven’t done that, and yes I include Bill “What Civil Liberties” Clinton in with the Bushes and Reagan.

Venezuela is a complicated situation, but if you compare Chavez’ behavior with that of our puppets in Latin America he’s practically Gandhi. I haven’t heard of any disappeared, have you? Tanks in the streets, even after the coup attempt? Assassination of political rivals? Cancelled elections? The claims of fraud in the last election were shown to be bullshit, (again, unlike OUR fair beacon of democracy … perhaps you’d like to join the black Ohioans standing in the pouring rain for hours to vote while one party claimed they were ALL potential frauds and the other party refused to fight for them?).

I find the parroting of the same mindless multinational “news” agitprop depressing.

108. Hair Club for Men - 27 July 2007

Most of the real Sheehan haters on Kos seem most offended that she called the Democratic Party the “party of slavery”.

You know what finally pushed me over the edge to ban myself from the DK. Some of them were seriously discussing the idea of drafting Iraqis into an American puppet army.

And now we’re learning that the embassy in Baghdad’s being built by slave labor.

But is the Democratic Party a racist party? I know quite a few people who take this idea seriousy and I’ve always disputed it but I’m beginning to find compelling argumentst that it is.

1.) The support for the prison industial complex.
2.) The support for the aparthied regieme in Israel.
3.) The support of the Venezualan oligarchy.
4.) The 10 year embargo against Iraq. Would anybody have said 500,000 German or Irish children dying was “worth it”. Something tells me no.

I’ve always believe that the Democratic Party overcame its racism in 1964. But maybe Cindy’s just ahead of us all and is seeing things more clearly. Certainly Conyers and Rangel are in favor of the draft which is absolutely slavery. Having more than a decade of draft eligibility left, I’m not exactly thrilled about the idea of being press ganged into the army in 2010 to go to Iran.

So maybe they are the party of slavery.

109. Madman in the Marketplace - 27 July 2007

well said:

So in a vague and meaningless sense, I side with John Edwards in his little tiff with Mitt Romney over tax proposals. The tax code should be fair to everyone, rich and poor alike, and it’s galling to hear the fabulously well-to-do–especially gajillionaires like Massachusetts Mitt–rend their garments and tear their hair over the unfairness of it all when not only do they have on hand a vast chace of resources to minimize their repsective burdens, but also because they simply cannot claim that their tax burden objectively, meaningfully constrains their expenditures.

But in a substantive sense, I think they’re both loons, focusing on a marginal debate about some redistributive kookery–as if closing a loophole or easing filing will substantially benefit Joe Q. Autoworker–instead of noting simply, as supposed anti-war candidate Edwards, for instance, might, that we could not only reduce our individual tax burdens but also, concurrently and without breaking a sweat, vastly increase the reciprocated benefits in terms of transportation infrastructure, disaster remediation, and, hell, universal motherfucking healthcare, if we were not spending a trillion or so dollars a year to rule the world (and not very effectively at that). This is not a new argument.

As for the so-called complexity of the tax code, the unfairness borne of its byzantine depths: well, that’s what happens when the soviets of a sorta-kinda planned economy that wishes to maintain a veneer of Capitalism-on-the-March are reduced to using the tax code as a principle means of control and reward. Since you can’t say “subsidy,” you instead say, “tax break.” And what occurs is that those with armies of accountants acquit themselves just fine–and indeed, CPAs everywhere are doing brisk work these days–while those who don’t, don’t. But offering “middle-class” people more tax breaks and “tax incentives” and write-off opportunities and this and that and the other is no solution. It’s like throwing a glass of drinking water to a man drowning in the ocean. I mean, thanks, but . . .

NEW YORK (FORTUNE) – You’d never know it from a trip to the mall, but big retailers are waging a war against Christmas.

That, at least, is the word from conservative Christians and the pundits at Fox News.
[…]
Not to be left out, Fox’s Bill O’Reilly launched an “investigation” into how big department stores are marketing Christmas. “There is an anti-Christian bias in this country,” O’Reilly declared, “and it is more on display in the Christmas season than any other time.”
[…]
Some of this so-called controversy is trivial. Banners outside Lowe’s stores advertised “Holiday Trees” until customers complained. Lowe’s promptly issued a statement apologizing for “any confusion the banner created” and said all 49 varieties (!) of its live and artificial trees would henceforth be labeled “Christmas Trees.”

Yup, just another “progressive” company kossacks will now be shopping at in droves.

Ex-Contractor: Foreign Workers Abused at US Embassy
More allegations have emerged of physical abuse and poor conditions of workers building the massive U.S. embassy in Baghdad. On Thursday, two American civilian contractors told the House Oversight committee foreign workers were tricked into coming to Iraq and then barred from leaving after contractors took their passports. The Kuwaiti firm First Kuwaiti is overseeing the six-hundred million dollar project. It’s slated to the be the largest U.S. diplomatic mission in the world. American contractor John Owens said he found the working and living conditions for the workers “deplorable.” Owens says the workers lived in tightly-packed trailers and were denied basics including shoes and gloves. They worked twelve-hour days, seven days a week, for as little as two-hundred forty dollars a month. Owens says workers were verbally and physically abused and docked pay for minor infractions.

Mitm, good post on Chavez …. what I remember after the attempted coup in 2002 (backed by this criminal government) some of the perpetrators were arrested and charged, not shot and not disappeared or tortured. Some were even allowed out on bail …. but one of the prosecutors was murdered … I don’t remember any over-reaction even then.

Chavez is hated by the multi-national Corporations because he is showing that when a country uses its own resources to benefit its own people first, the country can lift itself out of the poverty it was in when the resources were in the thieving hands of foreign oil companies.

Venezuela had a poverty rate of approx. 80% , not to mention the illiteracy rate before Chavez took over. Keeping it poor and ignorant made it easy to rob the country blind. Chavez promised education not only of children but of those adults who were deprived of it during previous administrations and he delivered beginning on the day of his first election.

He has taken Venezuela out from under the oppressive debt to the World Bank and made it independent. This is why they hate him. He is showing other countries they do not need these Multi-National Loan Sharks.

I’m sure he’s no saint, if he were he would be dead by now.

In Venezuela he is a popular president … and that is what matters. I do think he benefitted from the US being distracted by their disastrous adventures in the ME …. had they not been bogged down there, I wonder if he would still be alive. It is far more beneficial to Foreign Oil Cos to install dictators in oil rich countries. All those oil profits benefitting the people of Venezuala ….. this cannot be allowed to stand … that is why he is demonized here ….

Whatever the DP is it is never “it” exactly.

“A womans right to choose in consultation with her pastor, her family”

Fuck, the churches are still racially divided mostly if your into that kind of thing. If you thought the DP had it together in 64 you missed Daley in Chicago in 68 and the Boston Bus riots in the 70’s We are about to formalize serfdom in this country are making slaves of the penny waged assembly workers pimped out to us worldwide. We have a thriving underage prostitution problem HERE, and we are about to we’re about to formalize serfdom in this country vis a vis an ” acceptable” Immigration Bill.

That is the bullshit that Obama ladles out. One reason I call him Black Massa.

124. Hair Club for Men - 27 July 2007

The US ruling class has a maximal and acceptable goal in Latin America. The maximal goal is that every place looks like El Salvador, friendly government, lots of sweatshops and slave labor, death squads for anybody who gets out of line.

They realize they can’t always get this. So their absolute minmal goal is to prevent any Latin American socialist from gaining power and keeping it democratically.

Traditionally the choice for Latin American heads of state who want to remain independent of the USA has come down to:

1.) Castro
2.) Allende

Be an authoritarian and live. Be a democrat and die.

WIth Chavez they’ve partially succeeded. They scared him with the coup and he’s taking steps (not always democratic ones) to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

But with so many troops and resources tied down in Iraq, their options are becoming more limited. Evo Morales is genuine democrat and they can’t do anything about him.

So if the USA stays in Iraq for the next few years (almost certain) and continues to bleed itself, let’s hope Chavez relaxes the controls as he becomes safer and even gives up power after a few years.

The real tragedy about Cuba isn’t Castro. It’s that he’s 81 and still holding onto power. They seem to have skipped training a whole generation of leaders.

Back when they still loved Cindy Sheehan (in May), kossacks also launched a boycott against FOX/O’Reilly advertizers. Obviously that was very effective. (snort)

Leaders Afraid to Lead:

The Democratic leadership-late in coming out against the war in Iraq, late in opposing the PATRIOT Act, late in recognizing and publicly opposing the mistreatment of prisoners-stared into space until they felt the winds of change generated by the people. Once again, it’s time for the people to push their leaders, to demand more than bluster and empty rhetoric. Gandhi was once asked, “Where are you going?” and answered, “There go my people; I must run to catch up with them for I am their leader.” He understood that social revolution begins with a small group of people, and that leaders must be willing to run to that group to help give direction in order to attain a greater good. Unlike what seems to pass among America’s elected officials, whose concerns seem to be raising money to get re-elected and then pandering to those who could re-elect them, Gandhi was a true leader.

129. liberalcatnip - 27 July 2007

Wow, MitM. Well I guess I shouldn’t even say “wow” since that kind of thing happens every day. There’s just no end in sight.

Declaring the US a Battlefield

Bruce Fein isn’t an alarmist. He says he doesn’t see martial law coming tomorrow. But he is also realistic. “Really, by declaring the US to be a battlefield, Bush already made it possible for himself to declare martial law, because you can always declare martial law on a battlefield,” he says. “All he would need would be a pretext, like another terrorist attack on the U.S.”

Indeed, the revised Insurrection Act (10. USC 331-335) approved by Congress and signed into law by Bush last October, specifically says that the president can federalize the National Guard to “suppress public disorder” in the event of “national disorder, epidemic, other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident.” That determination, the act states, is solely the president’s to make. Congress is not involved.

Fein says, “This is all sitting around like a loaded gun waiting to go off. I think the risk of martial law is trivial right now, but the minute there is a terrorist attack, then it is real. And it stays with us after Bush and Cheney are gone, because terrorism stays with us forever.” (It may be significant that Hillary Clinton, the leading Democratic candidate for president, has called for the revocation of the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force against Iraq, but not of the earlier 2001 AUMF which Bush claims makes him commander in chief of a borderless, endless war on terror.) [snip]

Fein argues that the only real defense against the looming disaster of a martial law declaration would be for Congress to vote for a resolution determining that there is no “War” on terror. “But they are such cowards they will never do that,” he says.

That leaves us with the military.

If ordered to turn their guns and bayonets on their fellow Americans, would our “heroes” in uniform follow their consciences, and their oaths to “uphold and defend” the Constitution of the United States? Or would they follow the orders of their Commander in Chief?

It has to be a plus that National Guard and Reserve units are on their third and sometimes fourth deployments to Iraq, and are fuming at the abuse. It has to be a plus that active duty troops are refusing to re-enlist in droves-especially mid-level officers.

If we are headed for martial law, better that it be with a broken military. Maybe if it’s broken badly enough, the administration will be afraid to test the idea.

How fucked is it that we’re even having to seriously consider this shit?

131. Sabrina Ballerina - 27 July 2007

Bhhm, #106 – I like Ticket Punch, he LEARNED from the last Kos Victory dance. Do they not know yet that Lowes have been gone since January? Lol!

Lowes is southern boys on the make op one of the most rabidly anti union companies in the country.

You could say the same thing about Jetblue …. but that did not bother Kossacks for the most part. Kos told them to ‘fly Jetblue’, now they’re planning on shopping at Lowes.

I did notice in the Alexa Rankings that over the past few days there has been a spike in the page hits. They were heading downward, big dip, just before this ‘controversy’!

The bad numbers are in the rankings though …. they have slid from being in the 2000s earlier this year to now nearly 5000.

132. liberalcatnip - 27 July 2007

Going down, down, down.

I imagine that’s probably what Cheney’s pacemaker ECG looks like right about now.

133. marisacat - 27 July 2007

I think the whole ‘Go jetBlue’, ‘Kill JetBlue’, ‘SHop Lowes’ is kos showing he can command his troops (don’t laugh too hard, this means pointing the likes of cookie bear at a water fountain, Elise at a Victoria’s Secret, etc., basically), prior to the Ykos GreasePit…

About it…

134. liberalcatnip - 27 July 2007

lol…great minds think alike, SB. We must have hit Alexa at the same time.

How fucked is it that we’re even having to seriously consider this shit?

Funny, since I was thinking earlier tonite about some future date when a youngun might ask about what it was like to live through these times and then, asking what I was doing, my answer would have to be “blogging”. That hardly seems like enough – and isn’t. The power grabs just boggle the mind but I now understand why other powermongers throughout history were not met with immediate and hrash revolts. The actions of the Bush administration keep the populace in a sustained state of shock.

135. marisacat - 27 July 2007

Mitm, that’s a scary article by Fein … and that Act giving the ‘king’ the right to activate the NG against Americans imo, is unconstitutional. But I bet it was signed onto by a majority of Dems.

Thanks, Catnip … was too lazy to provide a link … maybe he should bail now before it gets worse …. but the spike is since the O’Reilly nonsense, so I imagine they will try to keep it going …

Hair Club, re the Liberal Blogosphere … imo, it is the smaller blogs that go under the radar screen and are not interested in adv. revenue. Since they have nothing to lose, other than their right to be there, there isn’t much to threaten with. Those who sold out to money interests, like DK, have a lot to lose. That’s why they become apoplectic when someone like Cindy Sheehan appears and says she’s challenging a Dem. Corporate Interests do NOT want her influencing anyone ..

Daily Kos is not the Liberal Blogosphere, it is the Blog equivalent of the Establishment Media, including Corporate Advertisors. And the Establishment Blogosphere includes the big rightwing sites. DK and its acolytes represent the Dem Party, Red State et al represent the Repubican Party. Neither represent the people.

The FP is controlled. The diaries are also, the pretense is it is the ‘communty’ who controls them. But that is not true. The same people can be seen always going after the ‘forbidden’ topics … today it was ‘Ron Paul’ again. They’ve had to give up on Impeachment. The people overtook them … that is out of the control of the establishment Blogosphere …

One thing that’s great about armed insurection in the online age is that we can live blog it, get the word out for meetups…I’ll bring my huge pistol helmet and Heli-pogo stick and ….

One thing I’ve noticed in certain citations is that the left or leftist carried a much more lethal connotation than it does now. Moving from

the Bastille to the Russian Revolution the term seemed to carry a whiff of “the fuckers who will come and butcher us all in an orgy of violence” Over time, The persistent framing of the decline of the Left centering around notions of the (lazy/impotent) Welfare State diminished the idea that the left was serious, as in, life or death serious. The idea of the left became part of a vernacular that now almost reflexively it means weakness I just don’t see Ghandian civil disobedience ever make it in a culture like ours. I think it’s going to take pain and bloodshed inevitablly, hope not, but don’t think so.

Night Bhhm – I hope you’re wrong … I do think there is a growing anger. When I feel it’s hopeless I have to think that the reason why things got so out of hand without the people rising up earlier is that we couldn’t imagine it happening here …. Europeans can ….maybe it has to happen here before people finally become more alert to the signs … of course then it will be too late … sigh!

One thing that’s great about armed insurection in the online age is that we can live blog it, get the word out for meetups…I’ll bring my huge pistol helmet and Heli-pogo stick and ….

Lol, I liked the ‘limp penis’ machine [catnip’s link of weird inventions]- they should have auctioned a few at DK. Plenty of demand over there for a device like that!

As for the Revolution, DHinMi will be analyzing it to death at The Last Hurrah! I don’t think we’ll see the boyz in the streets! But I’m sure they’ll pound harder on their laptops, maybe buy some new pajamas, cammies might be nice.

I feel so bad for this poster. He sees what’s happening, but he doesn’t understand why. That is frustrating … but once you realize what DK is, you no longer expect anything other than what he described and it doesn’t bother you anymore It’s like, say, expecting the Mafia to be fair to someone who can’t afford to pay them off. When you understand that will never happen, you are no longer disappointed or frustrated. They are what they are …

i am so angry at the unequal application of “the rules” around here im not even sure i want to stick around, i mean i get called a “fuckin moron” you know you cant get anymore personal attack than that, so i complain. nothing happens. yet jhritz seems to be able to get an admin into her threads to throw bans around and delete comments at will. i’m fucking incensed that mbnyc and jhritz are attempting to use the oreilly thing to punish their ideological opponents. the hypocrisy in enderrs desperate “gbcw” diary was stunning, he is an admitted banned troll who continued to come back again and again yet people “like” him so the rules dont apply. why the lack of outrage about this banned troll when many on your side engaged in a couple month long troll hunt looking for previously banned users that had returned? why is enderrs ok? because he supports israel. blatant hypocrisy. tired of it.

Jhritz is an abusive, emotional manipulator and worse than, although very similar to Slouise …. and the true definition of a troll. Just watching her operate is pure torture, to deal with her would send a saint over the edge. And that is her goal, and she’s good at it. But she is an Israel defender so it is to be expected that no matter what she does, the ridiculously named ‘administration’ at DK will take her side. I hope he does what Hair Club did and leaves. No one should subject themselves to such an unhealthy environment …

It should have been a clue when he saw BarbinMd and fierce enforcer of the rules, Elise, ignore them altogether when it involved three-times banned rightwinger EnderRS. They defended him. Like the Bush administration, refusing to answer subpoenas themselves but issueing them to Lefties! Tha is DK. They are NOT a progressive site … and rightwingers are more welcome there, even trolls defined by them in their totally discredited FAQs. They are charicatures … someone needs to write a skit … the material is already available.

Yes. It’s a rigged game. You’re only going to demoralize yourself by playing.

Steve Gilliard used to allow open debate about Israel/Palestine, as do some other people like Matt Yglesias.

But while the DK is probably worth contesting because of the high traffic, it’s not really possible because of the attitude of the front pagers.

I also noticed that Meteor Blades, the “native american activist” has nothing at all (positive, negative or anywhere in between) to say about Ward Churchill.

145. Madman in the Marketplace - 28 July 2007

well, he has in the past:

in the early 1980s, Ward Churchill and I spent a lot of time together drinking and arguing into the deep hours of the night. We were for years in the American Indian Movement together. We long ago had a parting of the ways, so I am not an objective critic and don’t feel comfortable commenting on his views about this subject or most others.

ITS WAR!!!!!

http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/

I had always thought “Kestrel” had been a plant from LGF to stir up trouble between the two sites whenever someone who varied from certain kinds of soft neocon talking points posted a diary. Then the frontpagers would get frustrated and ban discussion on the topic.
