What Harry Reid Doesn’t Know About His Own Bill

I attended the MoveOn.org rally on Tuesday night where Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid discussed how they were going to “end the war” and “bring our troops home” with the Levin-Reed Amendment.
When I asked if they meant all the troops, I was quickly told to, “shut up” and muscled aside by security. A fellow Marine Mom was treated in much the same manner and we couldn’t get over how much like the Republicans the “Anti-Escalation” folks were acting.

I thought maybe I missed something in the Amendment and should reread it to ensure I did not miss anything. Yet an in-depth analysis of the Amendment is not needed in order to find the contradictions.
A quick glance paired with recent statements made by Senator Reid prove that it holds no ambitions of easing the minds of military families and moms who want to know, “how do you choose which of our sons and daughters to abandon in Iraq?”
The Amendment provides for our troops to come home, except for the following three reasons:
(1) Protect United States and Coalition personnel and infrastructure,
(2) Provide logistical support for Iraqi security forces and to
(3) Engage in counter-terrorism operations against international terrorism groups and their local affiliates.
I had an opportunity to ask Leader Reid about how many troops will be abandoned in Iraq. He bluntly stated, “we haven’t spoken to the military yet, at that this stage we don’t know.”
We don’t know? They have pushed and prodded for this Amendment and they don’t know? [snip]

Hey, goodnight Bhhm – good posts ….. Kos has made many enemies, mostly because of the thuggery on his site … he forgets, these are people and when you disrespect people as his thugs from the ‘administration’ do every day, it is bound to come back to haunt you sooner or later … they talk to people like dirt at times. They forget they are NOT talking to servants, or to children and they complain when some of those people treat them the same way.
I laughed the other night when I saw a comment calling people her ‘nasty’! Well, no one here started it … and even if we tried, we could never reach the level of nastiness DK is now known for. And it was and is encouraged by kos himself. I’ve personally seen him do it. His administrators are smug, nasty and snide and invite everything that comes their way. What did think? That only they have a right to be ‘nasty’? Lol! Talk about reality based world.

Now, they are appealing for people to rally around …. well, the independent blogs they dropped from their blogroll and then told to stop whining, don’t need them anymore, why should they rally around them? And people like Cindy Sheehan and those who were appalled at their treatment of her there, why should any of them care what happens to DK?
They do realize this, so they are attempting to appeal to fear that all bloggers are being threatened so we are all in this together. Well, I don’t think the Independent blogs have much to fear … and I think if they were threatened, they WOULD rally around each other since there has not been the record of nastiness and abuse that is associated with DK.
In the end, he’ll get the support of how ever many loyalists there are on his site, and I don’t there are that many …. and his rightwing friends … that’s about it imo.

They’re actually not totally wrong about this. It’s a clear message to smaller “liberal” (or should I say “democratic”) bloggers that if you cross a certain line, Fox could attack you too.

FWIW, I used to post on Kos. I’m a rather novel case. I didn’t get banned. I banned myself. When the attacks on Cindy Sheehan started, I got so disgusted by it, I took my e-mail address out of my profile. I opened up notepad, typed in some random characters, went to my Kos “profile” page, opened up the change passworld box, then cut and pasted the random characters into the box for the new password. Then I deleted the notepad file so I wouldn’t be able to retreive the password. I now don’t have the option of posting to the Daily Kos. I highly recommend it.
On the other hand, Elise’s daughter is pretty cute….
Re being banned from dk, not so novel, a lot of people on this blog were not banned either, just saw it for it what it was, saw others being mistreated and banned, and went elsewhere, disgusted by the behavior of the troll patrols. So, aside from the thousands they’ve banned (according to their own stats) who knows how many thousands have left in disgust, as have several on this blog. And those thousands talk to others etc. So yes, he could have had goodwill from those thousands of people. Some are well-known writers and activists. All are progressives, as far as I know …
There are far more effective ways to moderate a site, even a very big one … his is one of the worst possible ways.
I agree with you regarding the treatment of Cindy Sheehan, it was horrible … but no worse than the way they have treated many others. Now, they are scared to death that people think she was banned. Well too bad. They were screaming for her to be banned and in effect, she was. She could not post there without being harassed and the administration approved how she was treated ..
Dhinmi was in Rusty’s thread a few days ago, anad MB and Barb, frantic that someone might misinterpret Rusty’s diary to mean Cindy had been banned … The Guardian apparently reported that she was. Well, they have to live with the consequences of how they treat people. For some reason, they expect people to sympathize with them when they get blowback from their abuse.
As for Fox sending a message to liberal blogs, yes, I remember the attacks of rightwing trolls on several of the blogs I started out on … some were even shut down …. but that was five years ago, we’ve all learned a lot since then.
Kos wants a media empire, most people online believe the strength of the Internet is in its ability to spread information. I prefer the idea of thousands of smaller blogs doing that, to counter the MSM. If there are thousands doing it, it will be harder to attack them all. It will be like the newspaper business …. thousands of them, but telling the truth.
I want to read writers like Dahr Jamail and Robert Fisk and others who are actually journalists risking a lot to tell the truth. But you will never see tham on DK, unless a diarist links to them. The content is very controlled there. So, to be honest, I don’t care what happens to them and I don’t think it will stop the flow of information. After what information do we get from DK? They really do not have much news, they link to stuff I’ve usually read long before they post it.
I’m trying to figure out what the hostility to Chavez is all about. It can’t be because he called Bush the “devil”.

I did before the big blowout. But I had “banned myself” very early after Sheehan announced her run against Pelosi precisely because I didn’t want to get caught up in a long ongoing flamewar about Cindy Sheehan. I had wound my participation in that site down to almost nothing and I didn’t want something to draw me back in. Maybe this was selfishness on my part. I dunno.
Had it been usenet or a more neutral site, I probably would have been more tenacious about it. But since the Sheehan bashers had the front pagers’ approval, getting into a fight about it would have been a bit like going on O’Reilly and defending Cindy Sheehan. Why play in a rigged game?

True. The site has a very hostile, very negative atmosphere, kind of like a long running usenet flamewar. But It’s pretty obviously not a “hate site”. Once again, I think it’s the Scoop software. I think a lot of the people I’d hate on DK are people I’d probably like in person.

Like you, I “banned” myself, simply stopped posting comments, and deleted every single diary entry I’d posted over the years. I was a sporadic DE poster, partly because I was sick of spending 30-120 minutes preparing something that got lost in the flood of pointless trivia people would put up, and also because I got sick of Kos and Armando putting up FP posts that stole my work without giving me any credit. Still, I’d done well over one hundred in two years time, so it took a lot of effort to wipe them all out. If I’d been able to erase my comments I would have. However, since I was a TU of very long standing, I was still able to troll rate for a good while, and took advantage of this to hand out doughnuts to deserving parties, and rescue unfairly hidden comments. One night when mcjoan and Armando were doing their Thread Thug With The Double Back act I decided “what the hell,” and after some 15 minutes of uprating comments they were troll rating, and troll rating them (deservedly, I might add) I suddenly lost my ability to rate and knew that I’d been banned. Incidentally, they used to claim they didn’t have the power to do this, which my experience shows was a lie.

Hair Club – I doubt O’Reilly is sending any message to small, liberal blogs …. or even larger ones. If he is, well, I think it’s lost on them.
I think it’s way more simple than that … they have made many, many people extremely angry, O’Reilly is always looking for material. All it would take is for someone to call his producers with some comments he could use against them. The hook to get him interested would be that the Dem. Candidates are going to be in Chicago, and/or the sponsorship of Jetblue.
If there was no direct involvement of the candidates and Jetblue, even if somone sent him material, I doubt he’d be interested … I have no fear for Independent blogs who dispense information in a truthful way .. they’ve been around longer than DK and are not into the money angle and access that DK is. And the more of them the better …. unless they make money their primary goal, as kos appears to have done, I think they’ll be fine and do a far better job than DK which suppresses rather than spreads information.
I don’t know, they don’t hate blacks maybe, but they sure hate liberals and ‘dirty hippies’ with a passion, the way Ronald Reagan et al hated them according to what I’ve read about him.
As far as liking any of them in person, sure, there are still some great people there, but cowardly bullies are not people I could ever like and sorry, scoop does not account for the behavior. Ex-Contractor: Foreign Workers Abused at US Embassy
More allegations have emerged of physical abuse and poor conditions of workers building the massive U.S. embassy in Baghdad. On Thursday, two American civilian contractors told the House Oversight committee foreign workers were tricked into coming to Iraq and then barred from leaving after contractors took their passports. The Kuwaiti firm First Kuwaiti is overseeing the six-hundred million dollar project. It’s slated to the be the largest U.S. diplomatic mission in the world. American contractor John Owens said he found the working and living conditions for the workers “deplorable.” Owens says the workers lived in tightly-packed trailers and were denied basics including shoes and gloves. They worked twelve-hour days, seven days a week, for as little as two-hundred forty dollars a month. Owens says workers were verbally and physically abused and docked pay for minor infractions.

Mitm, good post on Chavez …. what I remember after the attempted coup in 2002 (backed by this criminal government) some of the perpetrators were arrested and charged, not shot and not disappeared or tortured. Some were even allowed out on bail …. but one of the prosecutors was murdered … I don’t remember any over-reaction even then.
Chavez is hated by the multi-national Corporations because he is showing that when a country uses its own resources to benefit its own people first, the country can lift itself out of the poverty it was in when the resources were in the thieving hands of foreign oil companies.
Venezuela had a poverty rate of approx. 80% , not to mention the illiteracy rate before Chavez took over. Keeping it poor and ignorant made it easy to rob the country blind. Chavez promised education not only of children but of those adults who were deprived of it during previous administrations and he delivered beginning on the day of his first election.
He has taken Venezuela out from under the oppressive debt to the World Bank and made it independent. This is why they hate him. He is showing other countries they do not need these Multi-National Loan Sharks.
I’m sure he’s no saint, if he were he would be dead by now.
In Venezuela he is a popular president … and that is what matters. I do think he benefitted from the US being distracted by their disastrous adventures in the ME …. had they not been bogged down there, I wonder if he would still be alive. It is far more beneficial to Foreign Oil Cos to install dictators in oil rich countries. All those oil profits benefitting the people of Venezuala ….. this cannot be allowed to stand … that is why he is demonized here ….

The US ruling class has a maximal and acceptable goal in Latin America. The maximal goal is that every place looks like El Salvador, friendly government, lots of sweatshops and slave labor, death squads for anybody who gets out of line.
They realize they can’t always get this. So their absolute minmal goal is to prevent any Latin American socialist from gaining power and keeping it democratically.
Traditionally the choice for Latin American heads of state who want to remain independent of the USA has come down to:
1.) Castro
2.) Allende

WIth Chavez they’ve partially succeeded. They scared him with the coup and he’s taking steps (not always democratic ones) to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
But with so many troops and resources tied down in Iraq, their options are becoming more limited. Evo Morales is genuine democrat and they can’t do anything about him.
So if the USA stays in Iraq for the next few years (almost certain) and continues to bleed itself, let’s hope Chavez relaxes the controls as he becomes safer and even gives up power after a few years.

The idea of the left became part of a vernacular that now almost reflexively it means weakness I just don’t see Ghandian civil disobedience ever make it in a culture like ours.
