san gregorio state beach

San Gregorio State Beach, along Highway 1

I went hunting to see what I could find on this issue that I keep hearing, like mosquitos in the night, about first one beach, then the next, but not catching hold of what is going on…

This story is about San Onofre Beach in Orange Co… the description sounds not unlike San Gregorio above, south of SF… sheltered by cliffs and not a big beach… and traditionally clothing optional. Mixed sexes, mixed sexual orientation – and a full mix of what people wear, or don’t wear…

Stearns said some rangers who work at the beach have complained recently about being exposed to a “sexually charged” environment. The state needs to be mindful or may face lawsuits, he said.

Sexually charged atmosphere? All I can say to the Park Service staff is:

Dude, it’s California It’s life, it’s the BEACH….

I am pretty sure that to avoid offending, it may be necessary to stop breathing.

What ever we do, mustn’t hinder the rise of the petty authoritarians (beach restrictions) nor laugh at the political rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat… of either side.

Palestinians: IDF troops wound 9 at boy’s funeral in West Bank

Israel Defense Forces troops wounded nine Palestinians in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday in a clash with protesters at the funeral of a 11-year-old boy killed a day earlier, Palestinian medics said.

They said the troops had shot the casualties with rubber bullets while fighting stone-throwing protesters. A 18-year-old Palestinian was hit in the head by a rubber bullet and doctors described him as brain dead.

An initial Border Police investigation has found that Ahmed Moussa , 11, who was killed at a West Bank protest on Tuesday, died from a live round fired by one of the security force’s troops.

Ahmed Moussa died during a confrontation with Israeli security forces on Tuesday in the West Bank village of Na’alin. Villagers have been protesting for months against Israel’s separation fence.

The Border Police concluded its initial probe into the incident on Wednesday morning.

Also Wednesday, Ramallah governor Said Abu Ali said an autopsy showed that the 11-year-old was shot by live fire. Moussa’s autopsy was conducted Wednesday in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Abu Ali said the autopsy indicated that the boy was struck by a bullet from an M16 rifle.

I found it interesting … NBC evening news did a longish segment on the 100 small video cameras given to the Palestinians… nd they ran the segment the night ob ws in Israel.

And NBC showed two incidents (might have been three) very partial to the Pals. One was goat herders, moving their flock from one part of their land to another (and one of the sons carrying one f the vid cameras), only to find a SINGLE settler tent on the land and to be told by mil their land was not theirs anymore.

Interesting. Pretty rare for a segment so accurate.

another morsel from hersh: cheney discussion proposed staging false flag friendly fire attack for iran war casus belli:

There was a dozen ideas proffered about how to trigger a war. The one that interested me the most was why don’t we build — we in our shipyard — build four or five boats that look like Iranian PT boats. Put Navy seals on them with a lot of arms. And next time one of our boats goes to the Straits of Hormuz, start a shoot-up.

Might cost some lives. And it was rejected because you can’t have Americans killing Americans. That’s the kind of — that’s the level of stuff we’re talking about. Provocation. But that was rejected.

what amazes me is that they didn’t try this one.

US anthrax ‘suspect’ found dead. (BBC)

A top US scientist suspected of anthrax attacks in 2001 has apparently killed himself just as he was about to be charged, a newspaper reported.

The Los Angeles Times said government scientist Bruce Ivins, 62, had taken an overdose of painkillers.

The paper said that he had recently been told of the impending prosecution. The US justice department has not yet commented on the report.

Anthrax Suspect Commits Suicide
Official: U.S. Sought Death Penalty Against Top Biodefense Researcher For 2001 Attacks
(CBS/AP)

A U.S. official says federal prosecutors investigating the 2001 anthrax attacks had planned to seek indictment and the death penalty against a top U.S. biodefense researcher who apparently committed suicide.

The Justice Department was about to file criminal charges against the scientist, 62-year-old Bruce E. Ivins, a leading military anthrax researcher who worked for the past 18 years at the government’s biodefense labs at Fort Detrick, Md.

::snip snip snip::

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity because grand jury matters are secret, said the Justice Department was closing in on Ivins and had made the decision to seek the death penalty.

Ivins died Tuesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Maryland. The Times, quoting an unidentified colleague, said the scientist had taken a massive dose of a prescription Tylenol mixed with codeine.

:::snip snip snip:::

Norman Covert, a retired Fort Detrick spokesman who served with Ivins on an animal-care and protocol committee, said Ivins was “a very intent guy” at their meetings.

Ivins was the co-author of numerous anthrax studies, including one on a treatment for inhalation anthrax published in the July 7 issue of the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Quite a bit of detail about spore sampling, etc.

It appears the Pakistani spook service was directly involved in the deadly bombing of India’s embassy in Kabul:

American intelligence agencies have concluded that members of Pakistan’s powerful spy service helped plan the deadly July 7 bombing of India’s embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, according to United States government officials.

The conclusion was based on intercepted communications between Pakistani intelligence officers and militants who carried out the attack, the officials said, providing the clearest evidence to date that Pakistani intelligence officers are actively undermining American efforts to combat militants in the region.

The American officials also said there was new information showing that members of the Pakistani intelligence service were increasingly providing militants with details about the American campaign against them, in some cases allowing militants to avoid American missile strikes in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

Concerns about the role played by Pakistani intelligence not only has strained relations between the United States and Pakistan, a longtime ally, but also has fanned tensions between Pakistan and its archrival, India. Within days of the bombings, Indian officials accused the Directorate of Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, of helping to orchestrate the attack in Kabul, which killed 54, including an Indian defense attaché.

This week, Pakistani troops clashed with Indian forces in the contested region of Kashmir, threatening to fray an uneasy cease-fire that has held since November 2003.

The New York Times reported this week that a top Central Intelligence Agency official traveled to Pakistan this month to confront senior Pakistani officials with information about support provided by members of the ISI to militant groups. It had not been known that American intelligence agencies concluded that elements of Pakistani intelligence provided direct support for the attack in Kabul.

Pakistan really has proved itself to be a steadfast, loyal ally hasn’t it?

As to Mr. Anthrax’s alleged suicide (overdose of Tylenol with codeine, according to a report I heard this AM), that’s one of the most convenient deaths since Lee Harvey Oswald’s, isn’t it? There doesn’t seem to be much information available, as this NY Times story indicates, and I do find it curious that he’s been dead for 3 days and we’re only finding out about it now.

Was just reminded of something I noticed while watching a short bit of McCain on TV this AM. He was at some campaign rally or other, one with a Town Hall Meeting setup, with the studio arranged In-The-Round. He was addressing the crowd, and at one point turned his back completely to the main camera, and stayed that way for something like 10-15 seconds, offering a splendid view of his less than svelte body from the worst possible angle, and with the very large bald spot on the crown of his head glinting in the studio lights. This man’s been running for President for the better part of the last ten years, and he apparently can’t even remember to hit his marks.

From what I’ve seen, Prince Chunk has a better sense of how to play to the camera than McCain does.

45. NYCee - 1 August 2008

Good digging, Mcat! (#22) 🙂

I have something re MSM I/P and OB coverage, too. Also surprising, given the norm. May post it as a diary, but my god, the ObamaLuv is in such foamy explosive defense mode (all hands on deck, enemy fire, racist Britney ad!, etc) that it really has no chance of ringing the tiniest of awakening bells or not attracting the mudslide of denial and accusation. Cant compete with 5-Alarm call to the pack, the herd, the school … of fish. So why bother.

46. NYCee - 1 August 2008

Obama got challenged by black group at a town hall, for not addressing black community concerns (Katrina, Jena, etc). Held up banner saying so, crowd got loud and raucus (Obama Clones stood up to counter, chanting Yes We Can!!!) Obama quelled the noise and said theyd have a chance to speak, ask their question later: This is democracy, folks! I have to go forward on tivo to see that Q&A, how it turned out, as I had rewound.

Well, yes. And if he deigns to have a freewheeling town hall debate with McCain, that will be more democracy. It’s messier, harder to control these things. I cant imagine he’s looking forward to what’s on the menu in days to come. He cant do more overseas jaunts or big rallies. The small scene is really not his favorite venue.

#43 McCain is pathetic and has been, in so many ways. Quite a few Kossacks never seemed to get the memo until he (gasp!) hugged Bush! Lol.

Billmon returned and made a big splash at DK last night. Had a post on McCain, how bad he really is.
Oh, I do so agree.

However, what I found so funny, in all the antiMcCain venom by the Kos army these days, is that that very same site was McSmitten bigtime in 2004 with the idea of McCain as Kerry’s Veep. When you take the approximately 1/3 that were hot to trot with him on the ticket, pushing and promoting pro-McCain propaganda, and then add on all those who could be easily convinced to come along, to play that game to WIN, well, if he had joined the ticket, the numbers wouldve ballooned to a deluge.

But what a difference a year makes! (Election year) Now he’s enemy #1 – They just do not see themselves —

Billmon’s post derides (accurately), with examples, the media being fooled by McCain, giving him undeserved “Maverick” credit, when he is really a typical self serving pol. Kossacks typically deride the MSM, too, as they are so much wiser. Well, they were duped and/or knowingly pimping McCain – on a “progressive, anti Iraq war” blog, no less! – just like the media, and the media doesnt even tag itself “progessive” or ProDem (I mean, he was an R).

Billmon’s post failed to make mention of this curiosity, this oddity, did not retrieve it from the Memory Hole. I did a search and found a tremendous amount of such diaries and comments, including the pushback from folks rightly horrified by the idea.

Anyway…. Here’s a link to my comment (I included “parent” to which I responded, so you have to scroll a bit) amidst all the BillmonLuv and 2008McCainHate.

(An inconvenient truth coughed up from a thoroughly disgusted Memory Hole!)

…If you examine the archives, from the very beginning Obama was quite clear that his nouveau approach to politrix was all about recognizing the mutual humanity of right-wing populist cranks and liberal-centrist tweedy NGO-ites and splitting the difference between them (in terms of image-crafting) in the lofty name of “restoring civil discourse.” Well, where does that get you? Defending “good wars” that honor principles “we can all agree on” (routing “intolerant” madrassa-goers in the Hindu Kush) and “welfare reform” that restores the “proper balance” between “opportunity and responsibility” (I can just hear the Man from Hope’s sugary, unctuous drawl). It’s nothing new, just another gratuitous nail in the coffin of long-deceased New Dealism, studded with the conceit that more than 15 years after the collapse of state socialism and the messy schemes of Cheney-Rumsfeld-Wolfowitz the U.S. remains the “indispensable power.” — gluelicker at SMBIVA 7/30/08

Greider in The Nation, driving home catastrophe:

The gravest danger is that the national economy will weaken further and spiral downward into a negative cycle that feeds on itself: as conditions darken, people hunker down and wait for the storm to pass–consumers stop buying, banks stop lending, producing companies cut their workforces. That feeds more defaulted loan losses back into the banking system’s balance sheets. This vicious cycle is essentially what led to the Great Depression after the stock market crash of 1929.

I offer not a prediction but a warning. The comparison may sound farfetched now, but US policy-makers and politicians are putting us at risk of historic deflationary forces that, once they take hold, are very difficult to reverse.

61. wilfred - 1 August 2008

Olbermann just aired a clip from David Letterman in October of 2001. In it McCain talks about the anthrax letters and states that information is suggesting that Iraq may be behind it and action may have to be taken. So nice to have evidence of him beating the drum that early for this hideous war.

NYCee, a few threads back, you’re welcome, I hope you feel much better!

It occurred to me later that I should have mentioned in my post, an interesting recent experience with tooth pain. When the pain got really bad and the orajel stopped working, I took Tylenol, when the pain still didn’t subside, I took vicodine that I had never used from a prior prescription. The pain still didn’t subside, so the next day, remembering that a doctor had told me to take Ibuprofin for a hematoma from some stitches, I took that and it worked. I suspect that the Tylenol and its stronger acetaminophen relative, Vicodin, didn’t work because they don’t do much for inflamation… not sure why that’s not prominently noted on the Ibuprofen bottle, but in that instance it worked far better than the Vicodine. Now I feel like an ass for not having noted that, but it it just slipped my mind.

I feel exhausted, every day for weeks there is proposals or legislation or the Board of Supes passes or takes up or or or or or to monitor, ticket, fine.

Fortunately Nor-Cal waste indicates they don’t want to do it. But I suspect they would if they get a big raise in fees they can charge.

St Petersburg Times:

“And when I am president,” Obama said in June in Chicago, “I will keep the moratorium in place and prevent oil companies from drilling off Florida’s coasts. That’s how we can protect our coasts and still make the investments that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and bring down gas prices for good.”

This morning, Obama said this: “So what I want to do is just to make sure that we are putting together the kind of comprehensive plan that is going to work. And if you have a package that is offshore drilling only, which is essentially what Bush and McCain have been emphasizing, then I think that that is not going to solve the problem and I would be opposed to that.”

Myself I do not think St Ob flipped or flopped. I DO think he lied thru his teeth with the earlier comment. At the core of his games IS energy. Exelon breathes too close to his lungs (Axelrod) and he dishes the clean coal bullshit so easily. Too long habituated to the ethanol games (Illinois)

Such a leader:

If Obama were to formally embrace the plan, it would go a long way toward making passage possible this fall. One key reason Democrats in the Senate and House have been reluctant to support Republican challenges to allow more offshore drilling has been Obama’s opposition. Congressional leaders of either party are unlikely to take a position on any major policy that runs counter to their presidential candidate’s views.

I see pretty boy is pumping up for the guvship, read somewhere that the google boyz provided the jets as shuttles for the wedding affair…no cronyism there…doo know evil….

Of course, after Arnie’s termination of state employees, somebody from the Daily Kos finallly notices the site’s lack of attention. The reason? Markos voted for Arnold along with other phony pwogs on that site. They’re ashamed to speak out now.

Repeat: Markos voted for Arnold. That’s why he won’t criticize him.
Still a Republican sockpuppet after all these years.

73. diane - 2 August 2008

How are you doing cad? I hope well…

whom would one expect a petulent selfish boy with a short boy’s complex to vote for other than a penis worshiping fascist who’s idea of constructive criticism is to to call someone a female……….

74. diane - 2 August 2008

and as anyone in Cali, surely must see, the new, most talked about contenders for guvship in one of the largest economies in the world, Newsom, Villarega, Carly? [spelling likely wrong] have no regard, nor understanding for things ‘female’…things which both males and females, who are balanced, encompass …..

75. wu ming - 2 August 2008

no sense buying arugula, the stuff is an incredibly hardy weed. it came through the 15 degree freeze last winter without batting an eye. the cost of a seed packet’s less than a buck.

incredible profit margin for the grocery store. i wonder how long until they start selling dandelion greens for 2 buck a bunch?

76. wu ming - 2 August 2008

i’d say garamendi and brown are the front runners, at this point, although the race isn’t really doing much yet.

77. marisacat - 2 August 2008

I think in an earlier era Gavin would think that some of his escapades would bar hm from the Governorship, but then he has the sterling example of Arnold.

I find the whole thing entirely incestuous… There is no one coming up for governor I would vote for… I get the sense, because he aslways seems utterly drained of energy, that Villaraigosa knows he would be barred by the ptb (my guess is someone has a lot more on him than indiscreet inflagrante delicto)… Jerry Brown wants it, but I feel certain he OK’d the rubber bullets used on demonstrators in Oakland in 03 (and I think Villaraigosa, tho in Mexico City at the time, OK’d MacArthur Park in LA, May Day 2007, thnk it was).

They all jsut revolve from one elected office to the next out here… I likie term limits as it has them on the run and nervous, but they do just play a form of square dance minuet.

Carly ugh. One of the most painful TV 30 minutes I ever saw was she and MacCaskill on MTP a couple of weeks ago with Brokaw. Two tense women smiling a lot. God, it was awful.

78. NYCO - 2 August 2008

Re mandatory recycling in SF:

Syracuse, N.Y. has a recycling rate comparable to San Francisco’s (ie, around 70%) but there has never been any talk of “trash police” just in the interest of squeezing out another 15% of success. The state agency in charge of recycling for our area has worked too long at gaining community acceptance and good will. Sounds like SF is on the verge of blowing theirs?

79. marisacat - 2 August 2008

I love dandelion leaves for salad…

i forgot about garamendi… another eternal candidate.

80. diane - 2 August 2008

speakin of delicious weeds marisa, I guess Cali doesn’t have any Lady’s Lace (common name, I forget the latin, but it’s in the once named ubelliferae (had to look that focker up :0) ) family), wild carrot – has a purple black floret [sic?] right in the center of an umbrella of finely detailed, bone colored florets, the root tastes exactly like a carrot, it’s likely the carrot parent….something to know when the shit gets really bad, what one can eat by the wayside……

I guess they do have an abundance of dog’s weed though, wild fennel…yum yum licorice (jeez, had to look that up too), spaghetti (who proclaimed that fucking spelling?) sauce sprinkle………

interesting wu, from what I’ve caught, the country outside of Cali are mostly hearing about the above three I mentioned…

…Brown…there’s an interesting subject….Jerry and Willie both…my mind just hopped to Joan Didions white book and the Governer’s mansion…J. Brown strikes me as having become rather militaristic…..
no more Blue Bayou I guess….

Off to listen to Roy Orbison, I love the way he sings that tune…….

hmmm asking prices on homes in Richmond CA (part of the contiguous mass of habitation in the inner East Bay) has fallen 49%. Ouch.

82. diane - 2 August 2008

the horrifying thing about foreclosures is that most folks don’t realize that they won’t get a dime of the money they sunk into an obscenely overvalued piece of reality in order not to be beholden to an extortionist landlord, and be given some ‘respect’ for being a ‘responsible home owner,’ and raising their family by the ‘USA standard,’ …..no matter what the bank retrieves…… and the bank always sees fit that they get theirs – no matter how frivolously the bank flushes it down the commode….

83. marisacat - 2 August 2008

tight money for vehicles/leasing/buying/financing too… I heard the other day that quite a few showrooms have let cleaning staff (I assume usually a contract night janitorial service) go, and salesmen and other staff have to do it.

84. diane - 2 August 2008

well don’t ya know marisa, the citizenry should all be riding bikes while all our politicians and green Gore jet/rocket across the earth/galaxies surveilling the hideous landscape they had a large hand in creating….the pedestrian and bicyclist unfriendly, creepy, cold, nano-second world they worship..and thrive in…

jeez

just visited Richies website…can’t lay blame…but Obama is headlined ….I have no room to talk I was enthralled with Clinton after Poppy….

87. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

i wonder how long until they start selling dandelion greens for 2 buck a bunch?

hole fuuudeaux already does that. what a corporate joke. if you’re like me you pick all u want in your back yard.

nobody needs them shipped in from a 1000 miles away.

88. marisacat - 2 August 2008

oh well Havens will say something inapprorpriate and be rejected.

LOL Unloved, by the roadside, an Obama cast off.

what a fucking race.

I saw somewhere today that Ob got off some new version of that imperfect/enemy/good slobber that the wee Koswhacks love to spit up.

Think his was something about [not letting] the best being the opponent of the possible.

I have to hunt it up.

89. diane - 2 August 2008

errm bayprarie, not everyone can pick them from their back yard hon.

jus sayin…millions of apartment dwellers can’t even legally hang their clothes out on a line in public view, to save energy, let alone cultivate dandelions in backyards that are walled off from any life sustaining light (in apartments that appear to be deliberately built so that one can’t possibly be green – Al Gore, what say you? as if you fuckin knew, even though you own prime realty in a land filled with apartment ‘dwellers’)……let alone dandelion laws!

Certainly the only thing apartment dwellers seem able to grow, without even putting any effort into it, is deadly mold

not that I’ll be buying any argula at $20 a pound any time soon

90. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

hey 89.

mine grow wild. there is no cultivation only the harvest.

i just like to pick.

pick-me

pick-me-not

thats about as deep as it gets.

you deal with visioning “millions of apartment dwellers”. im not about to.

91. diane - 2 August 2008

hey 90

my point is people may well be like you :

… if you’re like me you pick all u want in your back yard.

but they certainly can’t always pick their back yard

and if they’re wild and uncultivated, …they’re certainly….not yours….even if they aren’t wild and uncultivated, that doesn’t mean they’re yours…”harvest”er…..

…mine grow wild. there is no cultivation only the harvest.

you sound mighty special hon

92. diane - 2 August 2008

91 continued

as a matter of fact hon, you make Bush, Cheney, McCain and Obama , seem quite harmless

93. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

and you sound mighty judgmental.

thats fine.

im fine with who i am.

94. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

guess its nice being missus jesus christ and having all the answers.

right hun?

95. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

as a matter of fact hon, you make Bush, Cheney, McCain and Obama , seem quite harmless

im the worlds great evil!!!!!

96. artemisia - 2 August 2008

diane,
what is your problem? bay was making a simple point…. that dandilions are weeds that grow and spread often despite the best efforts of the chem lawn people.

as for the poor oppressed apartment dwellers who can’t hang their clothes out or grow a weed, well, maybe if those things are important to them, they should live somewhere else.

and what does this mean:

….even if they aren’t wild and uncultivated, that doesn’t mean they’re yours…”harvest”er…..

if she has cultivated them in her yard, then yes they are hers to harvest. if they are growing wild and uncultivated in her backyard, they are still hers.

re: bay’s recommendation that we look to locally grown “weeds” to help feed us… how do you equate that with bush and cheney being harmless in comparison????

and what’s with the “hon” hon?

97. diane - 2 August 2008

whatever hon, sounds like you’re another spoiled brat, you’re not alone, seems that tons of them have been cultivated and pawned off on the public at large in the last few decades…..

baby on board….I’m special!…

yeah, right…….

98. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

yep. i was right.

judge

men

tal.

ever point those barrels your way?

you should. they’re hatefully unpleasant.

which tells me a little about you, doesnt it?

99. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

oh dont pay any attention to her marybeth.

just a column of late night hot air.

100. marisacat - 2 August 2008

welllllllllllllllllllll

Bush Cheney and McCain are killers. And Obama wants to be one… More so than just voting the endless money fro the quicksand in the ME desert wars…

So, really, no one here rises to that level. Just a matter of degree…

Mass murder is a long way from strangling the odd wild fennel bush.

[hi artemisia!]

101. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

dandilions are dangerous as well as disabling\

and evil if free!

102. artemisia - 2 August 2008

hey marisa! ::waving:: i’m off to bed… under orders! heehee!

103. diane - 2 August 2008

96

The matter with me is mercilessness in the guise of the right thing to be…like you, whoever you are “artemesia”……….. nice play on names and subjects…but so what? Since when are well read folk better than any other living being?

104. diane - 2 August 2008

further re:

bay’s recommendation that we look to locally grown “weeds” to help feed us

what a fuckin crock, you’re really stretching her comment, she, like yourself, directly above:

as for the poor oppressed apartment dwellers who can’t hang their clothes out or grow a weed, well, maybe if those things are important to them, they should live somewhere else.

was apparently implying (after reading her first response to me) that anyone who doesn’t have wild weeds in their backyard was a dumbfuck, and just not as special as her….well good luck hons..

:0)

105. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

hey 103

nice play on names? heehee. could you be any MORE clueless?

hahahaha!!!!!

google is your friend

newbie!

106. bayprairie - 2 August 2008

well i have to say diane.

i haven’t been slandered quite as well as you have done tonight since meteor blades compared me, as well as marisa, and the rest of us who post here as no different than the columbine killers.

you go girl, or should i say missus dandillion.

and you owe me an apology.

jerk.

107. diane - 2 August 2008

from comment 90:

you deal with visioning “millions of apartment dwellers”. im not about to.

You deal with wanting an apology from me, I’m not about to apologize,…I think you and your toxic wormwood bud, are self serving assholes….

gnight…..

108. bayprairie - 2 August 2008
