The floating stage on Lake Constance in Bregenz as seen in Quantum of Solace.   Above, the stage that appeared in the film was created for Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Tosca” in 2007… [GETTY]

… so did the boychicks look each other in the eye?

I read they were joined by Biden, who, in my opinion, IS a racist – in that classic old Pennsylvania way, with white ethnic Catholic thrown in…. Maybe, as they sweltered in what I read was a steamy Washington day, they talked of the never very successful Rose Garden, put in by Jacqueline. Planted in a less than fortuitous spot, or so rosiers say.

From Politico’s Whiteboard:

OBAMA: “I am thankful to Professor Gates and Sergeant Crowley for joining me at the White House this evening for a friendly, thoughtful conversation. Even before we sat down for the beer, I learned that the two gentlemen spent some time together listening to one another, which is a testament to them. I have always believed that what brings us together is stronger than what pulls us apart. I am confident that has happened here tonight, and I am hopeful that all of us are able to draw this positive lesson from this episode.”

We can consider ourselves “taught”.  Thank you, Mr Obama!, we can cry in unison.  (Anyone ever notice old student evals of Professor Obama surface?  They did for the Unibomber, as he had taught at some university in the mists of time.  But not for Obama, that I noticed.)

I think “crappy nothingness” was achieved here… and is a good take away ”lesson”.  Pencils down, books closed.   Carry on.

The audacity of hops.

Good thing Joe Biden was there. I’m sure he had a lot to say to all of them about how to survive making an ass of yourself in public (and living to do it again and again and again). The only “teachable moment” of the event, no doubt.

marisacat - 30 July 2009

beer drool.

2. Madman in the Marketplace - 30 July 2009

I was hoping someone would choke on a pretzle.

marisacat - 30 July 2009

beer nuts… trail mix. I am not picky.

Tho I just saw tape of Biden and Ob knock back a tidbit or two from a bowl on the table, using the palm of their hands. In tandem.

BAR

[B]etter Class of Blacks’ credentials must be constantly updated, for white re-certification.That’s why Barack Obama takes advantage of every opportunity (Father’s Days are ideal) to “bravely” point out the moral failings of the lesser classes of Blacks.

Dr. Gates is equally aggressive. As Paul Street writes in this issue of BAR (“’Skip’ Gates: A Curious Martyr in the Struggle Against Racism”), Gates once declared that Blacks must undergo nothing less than “a moral revolution and a revolution of attitude” or risk a permanent schism between the “huge underclass” and the “relatively small” group of Black people like himself. As a fomenter of this “moral revolution,” Dr. Gates presumably sees himself as a brave revolutionary. Just ask all his rich white patrons. ….

marisacat - 30 July 2009

When New York City police went unpunished for killing unarmed Sean Bell in a barrage of 50 bullets, President Obama tersely stated that Blacks should “respect the verdict that came down.” Obama had nothing at all to say when a Bay Area transit cop was video-taped fatally shooting Oscar Grant in the back as he lay face down and handcuffed. And why should Obama have spoken out, anyway? These were not his people. Oh no, they were the problem people, a problem for everybody, but especially for the Better Class of Blacks, who would now have to work even harder to disassociate themselves from the Bells and Grants of Black America.

Madman in the Marketplace - 30 July 2009

that sums Ob up really well, don’t it? Watered down, like his choice of beer.

I got a printed mass letter, to ”Resident, 1234 Street Address, etc.”, the other day from the Commerce Dept that my house or address had been randomly selected for an additional reporting on the Census.. and to expect some form to come.

Wow, it came. 28 pages. It’s a BOOKLET not a form.

moiv - 30 July 2009

My sincere condolences. We got that thing once. I didn’t count the pages, but yeah . . .

Have some fun with it. Be creative.

marisacat - 30 July 2009

I do plan to fill it out in violet ink…

6. marisacat - 30 July 2009

hmmm full frontal look at “volunteerism”, in the wake of NO and the Gulf destruction.

NYCO - 31 July 2009

Good article, thanks. Especially the “scabs” part. I work at a university and every spring break the kids still go down there and build houses, no questions asked.

Of course, “no questions asked” seems to be the motto of today’s college student. They never seem to question anything at all. Previously that kind of pliability was the exclusive province of eager frat and sorority pledges, but it seems to have taken over the entire student population.

marisacat - 31 July 2009

I thought it was an excellent dissection.

You really have to laugh.. Cash for Clunkers, a mess of a subsidy, is almost out of cash after 6 days.

Knock knock! Anyone with a mind in Washington?

And the government is talking of making the rules, which are a mishmash, more complicated.

NYCO - 31 July 2009

but Cash for Bankers is still going strong!

catnip - 31 July 2009

The paperwork’s less complicated. The gov’t hands out the money. The banks hand out the bonuses. Meet the new Circle of Life.

with a great jump shot and awesome in the lane ™- LOL

ANNNYWAYS We were going on about Catholics in PA , my role as designated lout in such convo’s – anyways we ultimately agreed upon my thesis …that of the Catholics in PA, the Scranton Crowd is quite exceptional..having fled the niggers in New York AND Philadelphia by moving North on the longitude from the City of Brotherly Love and Westward along a latitude from the Big Apple until they met up and drank and fucked each other in wild exctasy upon their arrival at the point of intersection, Scranton…LOL.

marisacat - 30 July 2009

well I have posted here Biden’s slobber at the funerals for both Strom Thurmond as well as Jesse Helms, to say nothing of his touring the South om 2007, iirc the year, with slimy allusions that DE is sympatico with the S as a former slave holding state.

The man is such sleaze.

BooHooHooMan - 30 July 2009

DE is positively antebellum south of the canal Chicken and Pig Farmers Del Dem types aplenty…Biden the perfect bridge between that culture, the DuPonts and the Wilmington Trust crowd…that smidgeoun of a window open in 72, all those caskets coming into Dove AFB…the PTB in state and on a National Level needed a young Attaboy backslapping tool..they found a Lifer in Biden however dressed up as an outsider.

And as for another thing you’ve covered… the “outsider” scam… the long trek Home every night bit…Pfft. You have people with longer commutes all across the country. You can drive to the Hill from Wilmington in an hour.

BooHooHooMan - 30 July 2009

A little over an hour now..Not that it matters. He had JUMPS (DOD personnel hitch a flight program) into the airport to New Castle for the asking…

marisacat - 31 July 2009

yeah agree.. JJB who used to comment here and made the DE to DC train run, daily, same route Biden claims, same DE station… for I think 10 years posted that he saw all the DE electeds on the train, but he NEVER, not once, saw Biden. Think he saw him at the station once for some ceremony.

BooHooHooMan - 31 July 2009

IIRC, They killed the flights over some cyclical outcry that pooped up for a time….corporate helicopters then picked up the slackey as needed. It’s all such bullshit. The flights of remains downstate into Dover AFB? Still in business.

Gates on the beerapalooza…one of the comments:

Throbert McGee

Mr. Gates is NOT a “metaphor” in a narrative about race…

…although he is, arguably, some sort of allegory about pompous Ivy League gasbags, as well as being a high-strung diva who believes his own “narratives” too much and has a severe allergy to personal accountability.

And believe me, as a homo guy, I’ve met enough high-strung divas that I can spot one at a distance. Of course, the “narrative”-spewing victimhood hustlers in My Rainbow-Flag Community love to blame all of their personal shortcomings, idiotic decisions, and sometimes self-destructive behavior on straight people’s homophobia, whereas Gates makes it about white people’s racism — but that’s really the only essential difference. The common factor is an inability to say out loud: “Whoops, my fault, not the other guy’s.”

Dude, could you maybe just try to man up and admit that at the very least, you did the ASS-U-ME thing by jumping to the conclusion that Crowley must have a Bull Connor lurking within him, simply because he’s white and his accent is more blue-collarish than you’re accustomed to hearing at Harvard?

10. catnip - 30 July 2009

If anyone needs a diversion. My Dog, they’re nutbars over there.

moiv - 30 July 2009

Yes, I saw that earlier, a real trainwreck of a soaper. I tried to imagine how drunk I’d have to be before I’d post something like that, and decided I’d have passed out long before I got there.

And that’s merely a possible explanation for the diary itself. The comments are in a category all their own.

lucid - 31 July 2009

I had a pretty public drunken breakdown on Dkos when the singer in my band and I split. I was so embarassed later that I deleted all of my diaries and left for several months.

lucid - 31 July 2009

wow – he posted his phone number…

catnip - 31 July 2009

I’m sure his wife is thrilled.

12. marisacat - 30 July 2009

Geesh. We are abundantly blessed.

[T]he legislators followed the unusual Christian doctrine of Pastor Doug Coe, whose son David guided John Ensign through the cover-up of his affair. Doug told reporter Jeff Sharlet the meaning of being “chosen for leadership like King David was — or Mark Sanford.” For example: “Let’s say I hear you raped three little girls.” This question would be asked of a young man who’d put himself, body and soul, under the Family’s authority. “What would I think of you?”

Like most people, the man guessed Coe would think he was a monster. “No,” answered Coe, “Because,” wrote Sharlet, “as a member of the Family, he’s among what Family leaders refer to as the ‘new chosen’.” Pastor Doug, David’s father, leaked an even more important secret. The Supreme One had revealed to him in the 1960s, that He had chosen selected individuals to live in the C Street house. Doug Coe led The Family fellowship going back to the mid ‘60s. “I knew Coe when I was part of The Family. He explained what it means to be a chosen politician. (Salon.com, July 22, 2009. In 2002, Jeff Sharlet lived in The Family’s house.) …

These chosen ones, albeit mere mortals – for those haven’t slept with them — might not have discerned their Divine mission, based on their higher spiritual values. So, Coe and his preacher sons, having determined their elite status in private conversations with God, began to coach the powerful in the proper methods of running the country – and maybe the world. At any given time, eight members of the Senate and House have resided at the C Street Center where they sleep, pray, and eat for a mere $600 a month. (Does this indicate that the residents are also cheapskates?) Other Members visited regularly to pray and seek spiritual guidance.

moiv - 30 July 2009

they sleep, pray, and eat for a mere $600 a month. (Does this indicate that the residents are also cheapskates?)

That’s what they really mean by “Jesus plus nothing.”

13. marisacat - 31 July 2009

Well I finished my multi pager from the Commerce Dept… ti was not too bad.. most of the pages allowed for answering information on up to 6 people living in one habitation. Otherwise just pages and pages on racial or ethnic background, levels of education, citizenship, sources of income… and a couple of pages on the housing particulars… “Does the house have running water?”, etc.

marisacat - 31 July 2009

Lordy.

So I was done with the damned thing, it is out on my mail box for pick up… As I gathered up the ep and assorted papers that came with it noticed one was a smaller booklet explaining the damned thing. I sort fo sagged weakly against the pillows.. wondering, how much can they nag us. Looked it over and noticed this on the back:

How was this address selected?

Your address was SCIENTIFICALLY selected to represent a cross section of other households in your community. Households in the sample are REQUIRED to complete the survey form. Please return it in the postage paid envelope as soon as possible.

hmm Or what?

Caps are mine.

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 July 2009

apparently a $500 fine, though who knows if it’s actually enforced.

14. marisacat - 31 July 2009

Speaking of “The Family” (he links to the Las Vegas Sun):

“The Family” goes to Lebanon

This has not received the attention of the press yet:

“Berns: Does some of the criticism of The Family have an anti-religious bent — in a nation that values religious freedom?

Sharlet: Why is Sen. Tom Coburn (Oklahoma Republican) going to the government of Lebanon, one of the most religiously torn countries in the world, and going as a U.S. senator paid for by The Family — and saying to the government that the solution to their problems is to create more Christian prayer cells, like the one he and his friend Ensign and are in?”

Posted by As’ad at 7:44 AM

And there is more to the interview (it is quite interesting):

[S]harlet: Absolutely. I start my book out with the story of the month I spent living with The Family, during which I got to spend time at the house on C Street.

I was invited into The Family by a man who had dropped everything and moved to Washington to work with them. While he was there, his fiancee was raped. He wanted to jump on the next airplane to be with her, and his brothers in Christ decided to exercise their veto power. They said, “What was your fiancee doing in a bar without you? Perhaps this was God’s way of telling you that you are not supposed to be with this woman.”

They called her a Jezebel. They told him, “You are not to go and see your fiancee.”

Thank God this man did not listen, broke with The Family and went to his fiancee. …

15. marisacat - 31 July 2009

Talk about coordination.

Joe Conason for TruthDig

Tina Brown for Daily beast … and

Rick Hertzberg for The New Yorker

(I am guessing there is one at HuffMuffPo and I just have not seen it)

all have posts up suggesting that Obama invite Bill C to “help” on Health Care Reform.

Good Lord. Two damned Democrats cannot make anything work better than one damned Democrats.

Settlement Reached in UBS Tax Case

By LYNNLEY BROWNING
Published: July 31, 2009

Switzerland and the United States reached an agreement in principle on Friday to settle out of court a closely watched case that seeks to force the Swiss banking giant UBS to turn over the names of wealthy American clients suspected of tax evasion, a lawyer for the government said.

Regarding the issues, “we expect to be able to resolve them in the coming week,” Stuart Gibson, a Justice Department prosecutor, said during a conference call with Judge Alan S. Gold of United States District Court in Miami. Mr. Gibson said a final deal would be reached by Aug. 7.

Judge Gold said that he would cancel a trial that was scheduled to begin Monday.

UBS and the Swiss government are battling efforts by the Justice Department to force it to disclose the names of 52,000 wealthy American UBS clients suspected of offshore tax evasion. In February, UBS paid $780 million to settle criminal charges that it helped wealthy Americans evade taxes on nearly $20 billion hidden in offshore accounts.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is scheduled to meet with the Swiss foreign minister, Micheline Calmy-Rey, in Washington on Friday to discuss the matter. The issue has unsettled the Swiss banking industry and escalated into a diplomatic incident between the two sides.

No Mention of Israel or the New York Jews. or the New Jersey Jews , or the Miami Jews or the Pittsburgh Jews, or all the Madoff VICTIM Jews. Oh FAUX “news”…

Fox had thought earlier today that Sen. Jim DeMint, R-SC, would block the clunkers bill, for sure, but a spokesman says DeMint is looking at options and will fight it if there’s a shot at stopping it.

Like, for sure, dude.

I actually heard some southern car dealer complaining that the gov’t hasn’t reimbursed him yet for the credit on cars that have been traded in.

It’s been running for FIVE DAYS.

marisacat - 31 July 2009

well apparently – as reported out here from dealers… but really who knows – the site keeps crashing. One dealer said it took her 5 hours to complete entry on one purchase… and they have sold 75 cars, dependent on thsi dman thing working.

Also reported here today, the additional monies, which I assume goes thru, may last just a brief time as well.

Think the administration blew this one. Mis read the pent up desire to trade in and get a better mileage car.

It gets old.

How Many AP Reporters Does It Take To Cover A Beer Summit?

Eight. I have to note, however, that all four attendees – Biden, Crowley, Gates and Obama – have Irish ancestry. The addition of Biden was perfect. This is what he’s there for: to be a bridge to men called Crowley.
