Rahovec, Kosovo: A flock of starlings flies over the town
Photograph: Hazir Reka/Reuters

No… it’s a bird!  Starlings over Kosovo, a place that haunts, especially as the wars grind on.

Think it was ABC national news tonight, a segment on Obama, asking dully which is what dullards will be:

“Is he up to the job?”, “Is he tough enough?”

Even as media rhetoric, I mean, jesus!  They have to ask?

Just today, the parade of Chicago Mayberry non-Machiavellis was appalling.  Rahm, Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett  (with special appearance by Robert Gibbs tomorrow).

A snaggle of gaffes, bumbles and stammering pauses.

What is more pointed, ABC news followed the Obama segment with a segment on Benny Hinn.  A LONGER segment on Hinn:  Is he real?  Does he heal?

So appropriate.

Wall Street Bounce Boosts Member Campaign Accounts

By Alex Knott, CQ-Roll Call

The recent surge on Wall Street has created a windfall for some congressional campaigns that invested their political contributions in the stock market during the third quarter.

[W]hile it may seem unusual for members to invest their political contributions in the market, the practice is legal under current campaign laws. House conflict-of-interest rules also do not apply to campaign holdings, leaving members free to invest their funds pretty much as they please.

Unlike their personal investments, members are not required to disclose the stocks their campaigns invest in. . . . .

If ever there was a group in need of full metal jacket outing, it is Congress and all who rise from there (Ob)

FWIW.. via Taegan Goddard. But of course only San Francisco (and only a part of SF, as Jackie Spiers represents San Mateo and a swathe of SF, in ”the avenues”, the newer Chinatown) votes to return her to congress.

Pelosi Not Even Popular at Home

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is one of the more interesting political figures of our generation. She’s holds power of her caucus like few before her, but she remains deeply unpopular across the country.

A new Field Poll shows she’s unpopular in her home state as well. Only 34% of Californians approve if her job performance — including just 51% of Democrats.

Md. scientest accused of spying for Israel

A Maryland scientist has been charged with attempting to give top-secret information to Israel, federal prosecutors said Monday.

A Maryland scientist has been charged with attempting to give top-secret information to Israel, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Stewart D. Nozette, 52, of Chevy Chase was arrested Monday on a charge of attempted espionage and is being held pending an initial appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Washington, authorities said.

Nozette, who holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, worked for the Energy Department’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1990 through 1999, prosecutors said.

He was also president of the Alliance for Competitive Technology, a nonprofit group he founded in 1990. From 2000 through 2006, he had contracts with the U.S. government to provide it with advanced technology. From 1989 through 2006, he held security clearances as high as top secret and had regular access to classified information, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said he was contacted Sept. 3 by an undercover FBI agent pretending to be an Israeli intelligence officer. That day, Nozette met the agent and discussed his willingness to give Israel classified material. He said he would turn over such information in exchange for money, prosecutors said.

Now why on Earth would he think that Israel, our friend, would ever be interested in breaching US National Security? LOL. From The way the WaPo piece is written, it’s unclear if Israel was actually involved.
A Miracle! A First! LOL. Who knows…

Hmm…Look at what the deal was about tho…

He picked up the envelopes and returned with other envelopes that contained classified information about the country’s satellites, early warning systems and its ability to retaliate against a large-scale attack, prosecutors said.

Acting U.S. Attorney Channing Phillips and Ben Friedman, a spokesman for his office, did not respond to phone calls or e-mails seeking comment.

HA!.. they have been telling us for two days that the next storm front was mostly dying out in the Pacific. Til it hit… SF Gate

This si a couple blocks west of me:

Along Scott Street on Pacific Heights, the rainwater came so fast that storm drains could not handle the deluge. Manhole covers lifted along the steep street as rainwater flooded out.

I must have totally believed the weather man, as I picked today to wash pillow cases and use the indoor line on the porch… which got a 3 inch flood in one corner.

BBC’s coverage has this on it:::

::
The complaint does not allege Israel or anyone acting for it violated US law.
::
Last month, Mr Nozette was contacted by an undercover FBI agent posing as an Israeli intelligence officer, whom he allegedly told he would be willing to regularly answer questions about classified information in exchange for money and an Israeli passport.

Over the course of the next month, the scientist provided letters with answers containing information “classified as both Top Secret and Secret that concerned US satellites, early warning systems, means of defence or retaliation against large-scale attack, communications intelligence information, and major elements of defence strategy”, the justice department said.

In return, Mr Nozette accepted cash totalling $11,000, it added.

Diocese of Wilmington files for bankruptcy
By Jacqueline L. Salmon
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 20, 2009

With the first in a series of major sex abuse trials set to start Monday, the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington filed for bankruptcy late Sunday after settlement talks with 13 alleged victims broke down.

The diocese, which includes Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore, is the seventh to file for bankruptcy in recent years under the weight of claims of sex abuse against priests, and the first on the East Coast.

Diocesan officials portrayed the filing as a way to fairly compensate all victims of its abusive priests through a single process established by the bankruptcy court. The bankruptcy filing in Wilmington automatically delays the start of the sex abuse trials.

“This is the best path to having fair treatment of all those who have been hurt by our priests over the years,” said diocesan spokesman Robert Krebs.

LOL So what makes the CC of Wilmington any better/different/blessed from, say, Johns Manville? Which was the first instance I can recall, hearing it discussed by the adults as a child visiting in NJ, of a company declaring bankruptcy to avoid liability?
