trackback

On Monday morning, German news agency, DPA, reported that police were happier with motorists: they said that German drivers had become used to the icy weather, were prepared and were driving more sensibly. Accidents were back to more average levels, the police noted. [Spiegel]

hmm something about the pic reminds me of our political situation. Fucking stuck. AND the “legend” makes me think of what the political class in Washington are saying about the populace: they’ve calmed down, they got used it. They may not smile, but they will take it.

There is a lot of rage out there… ”the people” are not happy, but I am clueless what if anything they will actually do….

Onward.

HA!  Instant update!  Just spied this over at Counterpunch… My own opinion is that a weak pretzel is a useless pretzel.  And, a weak one may indeed be a danger.

But hey, this is Nader talking, not me.

[G]iven all the burgeoning crises in the United States and the world, the only global military and economic superpower (albeit in serious deficit straits) needs a transforming leader, when, at best, it has a transactional leader in the White House.

I say “at best,” because President Obama displays an uncanny inability to deal. He is not even anywhere near Lyndon Baines Johnson in that regard. This lack is due more to his personality than to his character.

His is a concessionary demeanor, an aversion to conflict and to taking on entrenched power, a devotee of harmony ideology not because he doesn’t believe in necessary re-directions, but because he does not project the strength of his beliefs and willingness to draw the line-here and no further-as did Ronald Reagan or FDR.

In the shark tank known as the federal Washington, D.C. Obama’s personality projects weakness as someone who does not take a stand and fight, as someone inclined to rely on his rhetoric to explain his withdrawals, retreats and reversals. Some examples follow. snip snap!

I am sure many joys await us.

hmm here is a curoius tidbit turning up in the UK papers, Times Online in this instance..

Osama bin Laden’s closest relatives are living in a secret compound in Iran, members of the family said last night. They include a wife and children who disappeared from his Afghan camp at the time of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

There has been uncertainty about the family’s whereabouts for the past eight years, with reports that some of the children had been killed in bombings, while others had joined their father in planning terrorist attacks. However, relatives said that they found out last month that the group, including one of Osama’s wives, six of his children and 11 of his grandchildren, had been kept in a high-security compound outside Tehran.

They have been prevented from contacting the outside world while Iran has repeatedly denied that any of the relatives were living in the country.

Members of the bin Laden family are now appealing for the group to be allowed to leave Iran and described them as the “forgotten victims of 9/11”.
……………………

And this:

[M]r bin Laden said that his relatives live as normal a life as possible, cooking meals, watching television and reading. They are allowed out only rarely for shopping trips. As a number of families are being held in the compound some of the older siblings have been able to marry and have their own children. “The Iranian Government did not know what to do with this large group of people that nobody else wanted, so they just kept them safe. For that we owe them much gratitude, and thank Iran from the depth of our heart,” he said. ….

Pretext to bomb Iran.

The rhetoric is ratcheting up.

marisacat - 23 December 2009

Yes some of the commenters at the Times thought that too.

Yes how dare the Iranians shelter them. As we do not as well. Geesh. And does it matter. No………………………

HA via The Note… he so needs a clerical collar.

Just in case, President Obama will stick around for an extra day, delaying his departure to Hawaii, telling reporters,

“I will not leave until my friends in the Senate have completed their work. The least I can do is to be around and to provide them any encouragement and last-minute help if necessary.”

catnip - 23 December 2009

Isn’t he special? Don’t you just wanna hug him?

Big Dem backslapping press conference. What a joke.

5. catnip - 23 December 2009

Tweety: “I am defending the president against the charge that he lied.”

Shorter Tweety: “I have my head so far up Obama’s ass, I can see his throat.”

Madman in the Marketplace - 23 December 2009

I have to say I’m surprised, but Lawrence O’Donnell filling in on Countdown spent quite a lot of time showing that Ob lied.

marisacat - 23 December 2009

well he may never have supported him, deep down. He was pretty frantically “for” Kerry in 2004 (and quite nasty about Howard at times)… but I don’t think I saw wnough of him thru the primaries in 2008 to know where he really was….

Madman in the Marketplace - 23 December 2009

I think he laid pretty low during the campaign.

marisacat - 23 December 2009

such a hero!

Madman in the Marketplace - 23 December 2009

LOL … the better to get paid as an “analyst”!

marisacat - 23 December 2009

such an easy job… I landed on a very weird something or other on NPR during my enforced hiatus… it was Juan Williams of smarmy ewww and his daughter. They wept together about how far he has come in life. He was remembering being in the WH press corps and what have you….

As I recall his mother was a cleaner in the congress. He’s got a trail of sex civil suits behind him, 3 at the time of the Bill and Monica marquee days so he would have to disclaim and recuse himself from many of those conversations… and you know, great days as pundit wundit.

Geesh on and on it went, both of them teary at his greatness.

Odd Couple Of Norquist, Hamsher Call For Investigation, Rahm’s Resignation

The dkos reaction is a big hatefest against Hamsher, of course. Dog forbid they actually talk about Rahm’s involvement in this scam.

marisacat - 23 December 2009

the whole thing is so repetitious…
