This NASA Earth Observatory image taken by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA's Terra satellite shows a false-colour, high-resolution view of the very tip of the Mississippi River Delta. Ribbons and patches of oil that have leaked from the Deepwater Horizon well offshore are silver against the light blue colour of the adjacent water. Vegetation is red. Oil smoothes the water, making it a better mirror, so the oil-covered waters are very bright in this image

They keep saying the oil “can’t go up the Mississippi”.

Looks to me like the oil is in charge.

Israel Sending Edward Peck, Former U.S. Ambassador, Home From Seized Ship, Wife Says

OOPS. Gahd, Edward Peck was on the ship. I missed that entirely.
AP stripped out the U.S. Ambassador, career diplomat from their current lede so HuffPo it is…

Israel Sending Edward Peck, Former U.S. Ambassador, Home From Seized Ship, Wife Says

WASHINGTON (AP) — A former U.S. ambassador aboard a Gaza aid ship seized by Israel commandos is on his way home, his wife said Monday evening.

Edward Peck, 81, of Chevy Chase, Md., was among activists in the flotilla trying to get humanitarian aid to Gaza, said his wife, Ann Peck.

She said she received a brief e-mail from Israel’s foreign ministry on Monday informing her that her husband was fine and headed home. The e-mail said he would likely arrive Tuesday and would call from a New York airport when he landed, Ann Peck said.

She said that as of Monday evening she hadn’t spoken with U.S. officials, nor was she able to talk to her husband, a former U.S. ambassador to Mauritania.

This *could..*could..get good.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

his name has not been included in most reports… some mention a “US former diplo”… and leave it at that…

marisacat - 31 May 2010

thank god I slept earlier… I think the 10 o’clock hour on my local call in show is going to be HOT. The truly horrible local Israel consul will be on.

I don’t know why that horrible war on GAZA did not turn more people, but it did not. Shooting starving fish in a barrel. Shooting people with white flag, with their hands up. But it did not. Lousy rabbis coming out to watch the sport..

People accepted it… for whatever reason.

Maybe this does. a little at least…

takes a lot of outrages to wear down through decades of one-sided propaganda. I was amazed that running over an American college girl with a bulldozer didn’t wake more people up years ago. I was even more amazed when I finally learned what happened to the Liberty, that we hadn’t distanced ourselves back then.

matie - 31 May 2010

Wasn’t someone from the Liberty on board too.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

Yes a Joe Meadors

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

wow, who all was on those ships?

Gonna be interesting if some of this “important” (important by western media terms, of course) come back to their various countries and talk about what happened.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

Well Peck won’t be shutting up, neither will Wallender/Markell…

Nor I bet the Australian press, nor the al Jazeera press… etc.

I have read 9 Americans were on board… Pakistanis too, all sorts of people.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

I also read, at one point, that 2 of the ships were US flagged… nto sure that is correct, tho.

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

I read that the US diplomat who resigned before the Iraq invasion was on the ships, too.

1. Ambassador Edward Peck, Chevy Chase, MD, retired US diplomat
2. Ann Wright, Honolulu, HI, retired US Army colonel and former US diplomat
3. Dr. Paul Larudee, El Cerrito, CA, linguist and activist with the Free Palestine Movement
4. Janet Kobren, Oakland, CA, retired math teacher and activist with the Free Palestine Movement
5. Eugene St. Onge, Oakland, CA, construction engineer and activist with the Free Palestine Movement
6. Joseph Meadors, Corpus Christi, TX, decorated veteran and survivor of the USS Liberty attack by Israel in 1967
7. Fatimah Mohmaddi, Chicago, IL
8. Iara Lee, San Francisco, CA
9. Huwaida Arraf, Roseville, MI, attorney and lecturer, activist with the Free Gaza Movement
10. Scott Hamann, Portland, ME
11. David Schermerhorn, Deer Harbor, WA

2. marisacat - 31 May 2010

I think it is pretty clear what made the 800 or so on the flotilla terrists.

They dared to be anti-Israel.

3. BooHooHooMan - 31 May 2010

Bernanke says global recovery depends on emerging markets, central banks

Well now that the Shylocks burnt out the US and Europe, I imagine its time to double down on Colonialism.

What will they think of next?
US to peg Dollar to the OooRooLooo Coconut?
I mean basically what Banker’s Hole Bernanke is saying is ,
Can’t We All Just Find somebody else to EXPLOIT?

::

AND….I see…

HALLIBURTON lost 8% of its value today.

Out to Lurkerville.

BooHooHooMan - 31 May 2010

One more thing…In the last 2 months…
Halliburton has lost A THIRD of its value….
So to all those Libshit lawyers like Adam and Co. , who ya just know have a chunk of their dough tied up in War Sector stuff…HAHAHAHA!

4. marisacat - 31 May 2010

The Sun is going with 19 dead (likely mostly Turkish) and 26 injured…. 28 Brits on board.

Out of focus shots, but someone got a pic of the warship helicopter…

I found the Sun stunningly good on the family and details of the VTech shooter. FWIW.

5. marisacat - 31 May 2010

Daily Mail… the Nobel prize winners, two women who shared it in ’76, were on a Irish ship named for Rachel Corrie…

I went the the UK and the Australian google sites. And Google is censoring. Bth sites heavily stocked iwth US reporting.

Such fucking bullshit.

6. Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

I’m waiting by my mailbox

The Vatican is reaching out to atheists. They are creating a foundation called “The Courtyard of Gentiles” to encourage discussion between Catholics and the godly — I can hardly wait. Except, alas, it turns out their invitations are only going to a select few.

But in an interview with the National Catholic Register, Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, the president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, made it clear he would not be willing to give a platform to certain prominent atheists.

The foundation, he said, would only be interested in “noble atheism or agnosticism, not the polemical kind – so not those atheists such as [Piergiorgio] Odifreddi in Italy, [Michel] Onfray in France, [Christopher] Hitchens and [Richard] Dawkins”.

Such atheists, he added, only view the truth with “irony and sarcasm” and tend to “read religious texts like fundamentalists”.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

VERY funny! One must be a NOBLE atheist. Next they will demand proof of an historical European aristocratic family. Checking DeBrett’s …….

The foundation, he said, would only be interested in “noble atheism or agnosticism, not the polemical kind – so not those atheists such as [Piergiorgio] Odifreddi in Italy, [Michel] Onfray in France, [Christopher] Hitchens and [Richard] Dawkins”.

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

pretty pathetic … and funny.

7. marisacat - 31 May 2010

the Israeli consul on KGo is using “lynching”.

O V E R

8. marisacat - 31 May 2010

Okaaaay… then how did so many die on the ship?

However the Israeli Defence Force’s version is supported by respected journalist and author Ron Ben Yishai, who accompanied the commandos on the raid. He claimed that most of them were armed only with paintball rifles.

Daily Mail has the IDF version (and they state clearly that is what it is)

9. marisacat - 31 May 2010

Good thread at corrente… and a commenter mentions that the Rachel Corrie is sailing on, to Gaza.

the post links back to this post, saying the Turks will send another flotilla, with the Turkish navy.

Holy Sweet Lord, Turkey has announced they will send another flotilla to Gaza—escorted by the Turkish Navy!

.If they actually do this, it is the very definition of throwing down.

Wow.

Does Israel want a war with Turkey? They can’t win it, short of using nukes, and Turkey is a NATO member, if Israel attacks NATO ships, Turkey can invoke Article V (in fact, they can invoke it already, since the ships were attacked by a non NATO power on the high seas.) If Turkey does so, of course NATO nations will refuse, but doing so will break NATO.

This is high stakes. snip

(someone may have posted this already, about a seconf flotilla… I am getting confused)

He also links to Mondoweiss which is discussing the act by the IDF as an act of war, not merely of piracy…

This could get veryinteresting…

Fisk:

How did we get to this point? Maybe because we all grew used to seeing the Israelis kill Arabs, maybe the Israelis grew used to killing Arabs. Now they kill Turks. Or Europeans. Something has changed in the Middle East these past 24 hours – and the Israelis (given their extraordinarily stupid political response to the slaughter) don’t seem to have grasped what has happened. The world is tired of these outrages. Only the politicians are silent.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

welllllllllllllll those pols who are vitually silent are Obby and what ever it is that is The Two Headed Thing in the UK…

I loved the report that Obby told Netanyahu to “get the facts”.

What is he now, Joe Friday of the police?

11. marisacat - 31 May 2010

On the Rachel Corrie, via Ali Abunimah:

Niamh Moloughney of the Free Gaza Movement has just sent the following message :

Ok just got word from Derek, they have all agreed to take the Rachel Corrie to Gaza as intended, she’s 2 days away, it’s a Malaysian & Irish partnership on board we have Denis Halliday, Mairead Maguire, Derek & Jenny Graham, Fiona Thompson (film) and Mathias Chang human rights lawyer, Malaysian MP & media – bios attached

The Malaysians are serious contenders- they are very close to their government & have FULL support.

We have 2 days to turn this outrage into a victory & get the Rachel Corrie into Gaza with the support of the world
and open this sea route.

CNN

(CNN) — A day after Israeli forces stormed a flotilla carrying humanitarian supplies in a fatal raid, independent information on what transpired remained scant Tuesday.

The death toll of nine killed came from the Israelis, who did not release the names of those who died.

The Free Gaza Movement, one of the groups that organized the convoy of ships, said the fatalities numbered higher, but did not offer an exact number.

The surviving passengers themselves were being held incommunicado by Israeli authorities.

A team from the Turkish Red Crescent was expected to fly to Tel Aviv, Israel, on Tuesday to help coordinate the return of the dead and wounded, the organization said in a statement.

I have read the number 450 for the detained…

[O]f the hundreds of activists who were detained aboard the ships after they were escorted to the Israeli port of Ashdod, 15 were sent to Beer Sheva Prison, according to a spokesman for the Israeli prison authority. Another 25 were slated for deportation and 50 others who refused to identify themselves were being held separately.

None was allowed to speak to the news media.

13. catnip - 31 May 2010

Those activists must have had piss poor aim to supposedly have had all of these “weapons” (I see they left out the plastic chairs in that shot) and not to have killed any IDF soldiers.

catnip - 31 May 2010

And just a thought: for a military that supposedly has such a great reputation, why would they have paint ball guns (laughable) and not tasers?

marisacat - 1 June 2010

I ahd to close down and reboot, but saw a jeadline at Jpost… the IDF apparently shot and killed two “terrists” trying to cross into Gaza….

Michael Oren, the US BORN Israeli Amb to the US… a dual I assume, who serves two gods… But Israel first I would assume…

on Lehrer.

SO O V E R.

marisacat - 1 June 2010

He is being very clear, the Obama administration defends ahd supports Israel to act against Hamas and to impose the blockade. As he says, does Eqypt.

Right, we got it. We and Eqypt, a brutal dictatorship that we support … we are together.

Cosy menage a trois, no?

Of course supposedly tehre are large natural gas fields in the sea off Gaza, which is much of what this is all about.
