Pro-Palestinian activists from Turkey hold a news conference on board the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara as part of a humanitarian convoy. (Erhan Sevenler / Reuters / May 31, 2010)

It’s not the first time activists have attempted to break the Israeli blockade. Previously, protest ships have been turned back, escorted to Israel or allowed to pass through to Gaza. But the current flotilla, organized by Free Gaza and other pro-Palestinian advocacy groups, presented a greater challenge due to the sheer number of people — as many as 800 — taking part.

Yup.. the Great State of Israel, nuclear armed, is under attack from the high seas.

Catching up to Carole Browner on MTP………. SO bad. So bad…

“Our” scientists will be there, asking the “probing questions”.

Declaring our “independence” from BP.

OK but can I get a Boston Tea Party!??? A real one? In New Orleans, and Fourchon and Venice… and Barataria

Can I????

2. marisacat - 31 May 2010

I don’t know if this is true… but there is a report out that one of the officers of the USS Liberty is aboard the flotilla…

marisacat - 31 May 2010

Yes, someone named Joe Meadors

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

wow, really? Brave man … the IDF is fucking batshit murderous crazy and I admire anybody who could put themselves in their crosshairs.

A lot of Americans don’t know about the Liberty, and they should … only way to understand how violent that fucked up country is.

3. marisacat - 31 May 2010

David Gergen makes his umpteenth bid to be brought into the admin. snicker. Sad to say, things look to be such a mess, his list of To Dos looks very smart.

Can we get more pathetic.

EXCLUSIVE:

To underscore the White House message that the U.S. government is calling the shots in the Gulf, Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the national incident commander for the BP disaster, tomorrow will begin giving a solo press daily briefing wherever he is in the world.

The idea is to give the government’s response a reassuring, authoritative face (like ‘Stormin’ Norman Schwarzkopf during the first Gulf war). The new plan is designed to send a clearer signal of control than was possible when various Cabinet secretaries were serving as the spokesperson du jour, or when rotating government officials were appearing next to BP executives. “

I don’t think this is going to work… the CG has little credibility left… by now.

5 years of co-opting them in the time after Katrina, when they still had cred, still were apart from the other mil services…

Et les voici les mots dutrou-du-cul

marisacat - 31 May 2010

oh ffs…………..

[I] think the Israel I love, which I praised last night, the Israel I love so much, the Zionist and humane Israel that I love with all my heart, had other means to operate with regard to these boats,” Levy said. “I saw the IDF in action several times in my life. It is a unique army in its ideal of purity of arms. Until proven otherwise, I believe there were other ways of preventing them from entering Israeli territory, there were other ways of preventing what was clearly a provocation.”

Levy said that inasmuch as Israel “deals with terrible enemies on a military level,” including Iran, it is losing the public relations battle to present its case. snip

people who cannot let go of israel are complicit.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

god and then it gets WORSE… BHL, one more thug.

We wait for a new [Menachem] Begin, a new [Ariel] Sharon, who took the surprising decision that went against all of his previous convictions with this heroic gesture of leaving Gaza. We wait for a new Ben-Gurion to transcend ourselves, and give the Israeli people a grand political gesture.”

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

goes to show that willful blindness isn’t just an American affliction.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

which is so true… of course BHL is a big time American suck up. So tedious.

BTW, I notice the new name for the whatever Plan H is… it is NOW being called a “marine cap”. Instead of the acronym for ‘Low Riser Whatever Batship crazy next thing’ ….

So prophylactic of BP.

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

how about “Magic Suppository rammed up the low riser”?

marisacat - 31 May 2010

He’s yours now!

catnip - 31 May 2010

He can’t leave soon enough. And the Canadian and US gov’ts have issued very similar statements: they’re waiting for the facts to come in. Sure. Meanwhile, the UN so-called security council is having another toothless emergency meeting.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

Sounds like pretty intense demonstrations at the Israeli Embassy in London…………….

A conversation with Bibi

This, from the White House, indicates that the U.S. is taking its traditionally very different course from its European allies and others, who are condemning Israeli actions off Gaza as the U.S. affirms its relationship and withholds judgment:

This morning between 10:00 and 10:15 AM CDT, the President spoke by phone with Prime Minister Netanyahu. He said he understood the Prime Minister’s decision to return immediately to Israel to deal with today’s events. They agreed to reschedule their meeting at the first opportunity. The President expressed deep regret at the loss of life in today’s incident, and concern for the wounded, many of whom are being treated in Israeli hospitals.

The President also expressed the importance of learning all the facts and circumstances around this morning’s tragic events as soon as possible.

Earlier I read a comment from Bill Burton that we are “struggling to understand what happened”.

Struggle on!

I see Obama got rained out, lightened out, at the cemetary in Chicago……………….

Maybe a marine cap would hve helped!

BooHooHooMan - 31 May 2010

LOL. HuffPo has the vid The forthcoming pics I think are worthy of the Mcat Archives:
Obbie getting drenched at the Prezzie podium holding a wind rattled umbrella. IOW, the optics were PERFECT.

And it so true what you say about him when unscripted.
He said ” if the rain stops in about 15 minutes I’ll stick around…”

At a Memorial Day service..Where he is to no doubt shovel heavy on Valley Forge, the Invasion of Normandy, Bataan etc – ya know “the Good Wars” . I mean whatt the fuck-
“I can do rain in the car for the next 15 min, otherwise mind if I phone it in?”

Mission Rained Out.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

Gawd is not cooperating with Obby. Seems that way to me. Honestly this was all around a bad luck weekend for him, the righties have seized hold of the idiotic Fruit of Islam … I dunno, show of force… when Ob went to watch hockey (think it was) at a house right across the street from Farrakhan.

Somebody end this………………… the years to come just stretch out….

Well God was rather standoffish with His Only Begotten Son.

I don’t know, we seem trapped in jokes.

Some Mem Day event at ………. think Staten Island, the rotors of the mil planes rotated too strongly and whipped branches off trees, which then flew into the assembled faithful.

Anything, anything.. if the summer would speed up.

11. CSTAR - 31 May 2010

So here’s the deal: IDF commandos parachute onto the ship on what is clearly an offensive military operation. The commandos are mobbed by a lot of angry people with their fists and whatever else they can get a hold of. Then the IDF has the audacity to claim they were attacked and acting in self defense? Who do they think they are?

BooHooHooMan - 31 May 2010

Israel…the IDF who do they think they are?

They know who they are. They also know who we are.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

it really is reprehensible… and anyone opposed to the State of Israel (for wahtever reason!, by now!) personally pulled a switch at a concentration camp. Or would have…

Never have so many deaths been so devalued.

ts - 31 May 2010

They were going to kill people to teach them a lesson. If there hadn’t been any violent reaction to storming the ship with paratroopers, they still would have put guns in their dead hands.

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

I heard an Israeli spokeswoman on NPR claim that the civilians on the ship were “lying in wait” to … believe it or not … LYNCH the poor defenseless battle-armored highly trained commando.

I shit you not … LYNCH.

catnip - 31 May 2010

I just read that in this BBC report too.

But Israeli UN representative Daniel Carmon told the Security Council that some on board the ships had motives other than providing humanitarian assistance, and had tried to lynch Israeli soldiers.

If they don’t have anything to hide, why aren’t they letting the activists speak yet?

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

not just activists, but from what I’ve read two Australian journalists and an Al Jazeera journalist haven’t been heard from since, either.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

The Ausralians surfaced but the reporter, the man, was shot in the leg during the attack…

According to wikipedia

Bernard-Henri Lévy (French pronunciation: [bɛʁnaʁ ɑ̃ʁi levi]; born November 5, 1948) is a French public intellectual, philosopher and journalist.

This is one of instances where soi-disant is appropriate.

Boing Boing compendium of links about the Gaza flotilla attack.

16. Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

John Cole links to some interesting pieces on the IDF’s latest, with some interesting points about where it could all lead and escalate, such as:

Turkey threatens action; Israel on alert

New Delhi: Turkey has threatened Israel with unprecedented action after Israeli forces attacked an aid vessel, killing 10 peace activists headed to Gaza.

Israel said 10 people died while those on the ship said at least 15 were killed.

A shocked world has responded with outrage. Turkey recalled its ambassador to Israel and warned of unprecedented and incalculable reprisals.

Two Turkish activists were reported to be among those killed in the flotilla. Ankara warned that further supply vessels will be sent to Gaza, escorted by the Turkish Navy, a development with unpredictable consequences.

and and more in that vein, and what else Turkey could do:

Does Israel want a war with Turkey? They can’t win it, short of using nukes, and Turkey is a NATO member, if Israel attacks NATO ships, Turkey can invoke Article V (in fact, they can invoke it already, since the ships were attacked by a non NATO power on the high seas.) If Turkey does so, of course NATO nations will refuse, but doing so will break NATO.

This is high stakes.

Update: I might add that in the case of a war between Turkey and Israel, if Turkey is serious, unless Israel uses nukes, my money is on the Turks. They have a huge armored corp, and the nations between Israel and Turkey aren’t going to say no if Turkey asks for access (because if they do, Turkey will just roll right through them.) Also if Turkey and Israel goes to war, it’s at least 50/50 the Egypt jumps in as well.

Article V (from Wikipedia:

The 11 September attacks caused NATO to invoke Article 5 of the NATO Charter for the first time in its history. The Article says that an attack on any member shall be considered to be an attack on all. The invocation was confirmed on 4 October 2001 when NATO determined that the attacks were indeed eligible under the terms of the North Atlantic Treaty.

I did not see it anywhere else, but Business Insider said that immediately Israel told israelis in Turkey to come home.

Also there is pseculation around, but I have no idea, that Israel would nto have done this had we not green lighted it…

One vid I saw, had audio with IDF yelling as they boarded that they were being shot with live rounds.. whatever came down, if that is true it was planned to be as it is rolling out…

Madman in the Marketplace - 31 May 2010

they do seem to be eager for a widened war in the region.

marisacat - 31 May 2010

oh I also saw speculation that Israel might have some harebrained idea about going to war for water resources.

Geesh who knows, they are as crazy as we are…

matie - 31 May 2010

Easest way to kill the peace movement is to start another war. They’re still miffed we have not taken out Iran.

What a piece of shit that country is. Started out in a blood bath, and they continue that legacy.

And why was every western country in meltdown over the financial crisis…except Israel.

Mankell he Wallander series author is among the Swedes held in Israel…

Crime writer Mankell held in Israel after aid boat attack: Sweden

(AFP) – 6 hours ago

STOCKHOLM — Swedish crime writer Henning Mankell, author of the Wallander detective series, is one of nine Swedes held in Israel Monday after landing from a Gaza-bound aid flotilla attacked by Israeli commandos, Sweden’s foreign ministry said.

Mankell “has been detained … In all, nine Swedes have been detained,” ministry spokesman Anders Joerle told AFP, adding that they were not all being held at the same place and some had been imprisoned while others had simply been taken into custody.

“I think Henning Mankell is just being held in custody. I’m not sure. The Israelis have him in some kind of detention,” he said.

Some of the Swedes had been very slightly injured, Joerle said, adding that some Swedes believed to have been travelling with the flotilla when it was attacked early Monday had yet to be reached.

The nine Swedes have reportedly been given the choice between accepting to be deported or to be tried in an Israeli court.

Lying, cheating, manipulative, etc? Not to mention… the pound of flesh?

marisacat - 31 May 2010

Well I can say that a rabid pro Israel host on KGO is arguing right and left iwth callers about how wrong all of this is, you don’t board on the high seas, for starters. That the humanitarian relief effort is not beholden to Israel.. that the occupation of the lands must be settled, it has gone on for nearly two generations, etc… that 9 are dead (my guess higher, one reason so many people are being held) etc… .

And how Israeli tv is nothing but ”pure propaganda”, no one can believe wht is being shown on it……. reiterates his having been to Israel many times over the years, most I would suspect paid for by government connected entities, theirs and ours.

We shall see……………….

21. marisacat - 31 May 2010
