At least there is one little bee on earth, still plugging away…

hmm I am watching a wonderful little movie, that I guess had extremely limited (if any) theatrical release here in the US, Ripley’s Game a retelling, at an older age, of the Ripley story by Highsmith.

Directed by Liliana Cavani who directed The Night Porter

Very very wonderful and filmed in a Palladian palazzo on the Brenta outside of Venice, also in Vicenza and Padova. I am not esp a fan of John Malkovich (I cheered when the French found a way to get him out of the country, 😆 🙄 ) but this is a perfect role for him.

Dark as the story is I laughed out loud at some of the lines Malkovich delivered.

wow… I looked up the Villa used in the film, Palazzo Emo, built in 1559 and remained in the Emo family til it ws sold in 2004.

440 years.

Villa Emo is an Italian villa in the Veneto near the village of Fanzolo di Vedelago. It was designed by Andrea Palladio in 1559 for the Emo family of Venice and remained in the hands of the Emo family until it was sold in 2004. Since 1996, it has been conserved as part of the World Heritage Site “City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto”. (→Villa Emo)

There is some permanence …

sounds great … I missed it when it came around.

I saw the latest Woody Allen flick this week, “Midnight in Paris”. I think you’d enjoy it when it comes around on DVD. Kind of like “Purple Rose of Cairo”.

marisacat - 22 July 2011

oh thank you for that… I will get it thru Netflixer… 😉

Madman in the Marketplace - 22 July 2011

Woody, for all of his faults (like the ever more toxic misogyny) finds a way to always make Paris look beautiful.

marisacat - 22 July 2011

I put it on my list…. it is not available yet…. thanks for mentioning as the ads and tralilers for it had not captured me much….

marisacat - 22 July 2011

oh yeah the misogyny. Well Woody has come as close to finding his Mother (he and his mother look EXACTLY alike) as possible, in the Chinese adoptee wife…. And obvioiusly Mia should have only adopted boys for her version of the Madonna Brangelina games.

My god.. is there no end to it?

ms_xeno - 22 July 2011

Every time you read a comment over there, your IQ drops another ten points. Don’t do it! :p

marisacat - 22 July 2011

oh but they are so entertaining!! I have no idea what really happened with the woman traveller, but one comment suggests we are getting to be like Saudi Arabia, with the religious clothing police.

It seems we are.

(I am on day 3 of trying to resolve a nightmare order from Safeway… and plotting my escape from using them, as an animal plots to escape the Zoo. What a mess.)

I hope they glitter Marcus B to death, frankly. Looks like a sick old closet case to me.

4. ms_xeno - 22 July 2011

We have bees in abundance here! They love my annuals, and the blooming herbs on mr_xeno’s side of the yard.

The only movie I’ve seen recently is a matinee’ of Thor. Big, dumb fun, all around. And since it only cost three bucks, I had money left for beer! 😀

marisacat - 22 July 2011

I think there are things in my neighbor’s garden that attract hummingbirds… so I’m going to get something potted that will as well… they sometimes drift over to my little bit of plantings, looking around for soemthing to hone in on…

😉

This paper got forwarded to me at work. Technical and wonkish, but many enlightning insights into our byzantine tax code, as well as a good description of the Double Irish Dutch Sandwich. IMHO, NTIM, these strategies can be handled in the current tax regulations, but alas, the IRS, as with the SEC, is completely out of its league against the competition. And it certainly doesn’t help that salaries and staffing are going to get slashed even further once the debt ceiling and 2012 budget get done.

http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1791769

Key statistic: $1 trillion, that’s the estimate of how much accumulated earnings of U.S. corporations are stashed overseas.

ts - 22 July 2011

I really should bookmark Taibbi.

marisacat - 22 July 2011

welll things should be settled and streamlined soon in DC, right?

I mean, everything is just so peachy with the boychicks today.

What a crew.

Madman in the Marketplace - 22 July 2011

both parties been demonizing then de-funding all of the enforcement arms, the IRS, SEC etc, anything that can make sure the state collects it’s legal funding and/or enforces regulation over the wealthy and their casinos.

diane - 22 July 2011

my favorite paragraph:

We’re seriously talking about defaulting on our debt, and cutting Medicare and Social Security, so that Google can keep paying its current 2.4 percent effective tax rate and GE, a company that received a $140 billion bailout en route to worldwide 2010 profits of $14 billion, can not only keep paying no taxes at all , but receive a $3.2 billion tax credit from the federal government. And nobody appears to give a shit. What the hell is wrong with people? Have we all lost our minds?

And then there are those missing State Revenues; much of which, I suspect, are a result of mergers and acquisitions, where corporations pretend they are no longer doing business in the states where the target company was operating (of course the Big Four are well aware of those liabilities). A “cushion” account is set up, “accruing” for those known liabilities, but mostly, they are not paid. As with the Federal liability, the Corporation waits for that amnesty holiday.

Heaven forbid, anyone working in a Corporate Tax Department comment about not only a “Patriotic?,” or Legal RESPONSIBLITY, …but a MORAL responsibility, ……they may never work again. And certainly there are no watchdogs for those employees to run to, all of the NonProfit Professional Organs, State Reps (ReThug or Dem), higher ups in GUV Taxation entities (remember Enron), and the Big Four, are mostly, all in on the SwineFest.

(I wanted to respond more about that Social Security news Marisa (last thread), so much I wanted to say, but I’m going to meditate on it.)

marisacat - 22 July 2011

And nobody appears to give a shit. What the hell is wrong with people? Have we all lost our minds?

Media has gone especially nutty… several segments across all channels about how things are better. ONe local SF news, forget which affiliate to which network has been extra extra nutty. Heralding some Indian start up relocating (they say!) FROM India to San Francisco. I just rolled my eyes…. And a blubbery Indian telling us glibly he is here to be near the “rock stars” in technology.

So much shit AND shinola, it is just a deluge.

AS we cut back on our courts, shuttering 12 (out of 15) court rooms here i n the City in Superior Court (a 40% layoff coming).

marisacat - 22 July 2011

oops no the number of courtrooms being shuttered in SF is HIGHER, the news report had moved on to the Presiding Judge in San Joaquin Co, which is smaller….

btw, Dianne F’s daughter is Presiding Judge here… Think I heard a few days ago, w are shuttering TWENTY FIVE courtrooms in Sup Ct….

diane - 22 July 2011

I fucking despite the Cali Pretenses to some sort of Wisdom ….

And speaking about local nooooz, so quaint that KGO/ABC, must have that phone number one dialed from, if they want to speak their opinion. I tested it dialing their SF local number: 415 + the last seven of the 800 number, from a calling card. Their “system” still detected that it didn’t have the number I was dialing from, and demanded I unblock Caller ID. …. Well shit, even the murky nooz, in ReThug/Libertarian Sly Con Valley, lets you dial and comment, with Caller ID. intact.

diane - 22 July 2011

despise, not “despite”

marisacat - 22 July 2011

well the hosts at KGO with hardy any exception or variance (except for personal style) are just such authoritarians that I would never call-in… I drop emails from time to time. About it…

diane - 22 July 2011

In addition to being authoritarian, clearly they are tracking their callers and keeping records, I guess that bit about anonymous news sources, only pertains to politically hooked up sources for ABC. I mean, because they are using that call in show as news. ..To add insult to injury, they don’t even have to pay anyone outside of their chosen bully (Rothman, et al…) for it, they may even be paid by the GUV, for caller data, just like Google, Yahoo, Apple, ….etc, are paid for sharing what many citizens thought was private data. ……

marisacat - 22 July 2011

ordinary informaion is hardly private anymore. I think more likely the reason KGO wants phone ID available is security issues. They did have someone make it inside the building a few years ago and start shooting. The shooter killed someone iirc.

My neighbor asked if I would consider dropping my ID blocking, which actually is left on the long time land line here, that was my mother’s… he never picks up a call that is not ID’d… and I do understand why, I use my telephone answering machine to screen calls… but he’s wrried if I keel over and call for help, he won’t answer the phone til he listens to the message.

sigh. so it goes.

diane - 22 July 2011

Well, as regards KGO, most Newspapers still don’t demand unblocked numbers, and as nasty as some of those articles are, one might think they would have the same problem. The “News” should allow for anonymous sources, and provide some other type security for its employees (and I’m pretty sure, they have the money to do that), otherwise, there will be no more news at all.

marisacat - 22 July 2011

The place strikes me as pretty passive, they do the least and pass it off as being active… LOL.

IF they do collect data and forward it or sell it, I would bet it is a haphazard mess

diane - 22 July 2011

well, if you still have the numbers I gave you, you can call me, and I’ll dial 911. I pick up my land line when it rings honey, the only exception being, when it appears to be an internet ping, so you might want to try twice.

marisacat - 22 July 2011

well thank you, but I can call 911… whcih, I did not want to tell him, I would call 911 BEFORE I called him…. for safety sake. He travels and still goes out and about and might very likely not be home…

diane - 22 July 2011

Ok …I see, I was wondering, why you would need to call him versus 911, what I meant was I’ll call whoever he might call for you outside of 911 ….

marisacat - 22 July 2011

it was just an expression of worry, on his part…. but I am perfectly capable of calling 911, even if in much worse shape than the two times I managed it in the recent past.

diane - 22 July 2011

..well, it sounds like he’s a pretty sweet neighbor hon, if he worries about your welfare, … I’m glad he does, I don’t blame him … ;0)

diane - 22 July 2011

…The place strikes me as pretty passive.

perhaps, ….but what about a voice which went unheard, …which might have effected change …..for fear of their bullying, and silencer button?…. I would say passive aggressive then, …almost worse than the blatantly brutal and aggressive ……

marisacat - 22 July 2011

well as I said, ti is authoritarian. And often demogogic. But it really jsut rolls itself out everyday, rehashing the hash.. adn then regurgitating the hashed hash.

Basically.

I see whiner pretzel is slobbering.

Gah.

Madman in the Marketplace - 22 July 2011

“It’s not me! It’s THEM!”

…. now vote/contribute …

marisacat - 22 July 2011

anyone buying this bullshite …. he sounds unbelievably peevish. Boehner didn’t call me wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

appalling.

Madman in the Marketplace - 22 July 2011

gawd, it’s not like the fairness argument is a hard one to make, but he’s making it sound like it’s about poor ole’ Barry, manofthepeople(cough), is getting no respect (I keep waiting for him to do a Rodney Dangerfield-style adjustment of his tie).

marisacat - 22 July 2011

He really is disgusting…. Same old slop. Shouldn’t be fed to pigs, imo.

Minor fixer, too long used to the UofC, small, crony-ridden ‘Civil Rights” firm that was a funnel for Federal money into Chicago and Illinois, minor state lege fixture, small, too-precious consitutency of fake liberal blacks whites and Jews… and the wif. Don’t let me get started.

Non-profit addicts, basically. Small time.

But Axelrod and the corrupt party knew the people are sheep-shit-for-brains. And I really don’t indulge in ”sheeple” descriptions. But what a suicide swan dive itwas to vote for him.

■Rejecting Lucrative Offer, Cenk Uygur Leaves MSNBC After Being Told to “Act Like an Insider”

22 July 2011

After giving a nearly six-month tryout for the internet talk show host Cenk Uygur, the cable news channel MSNBC is preparing to instead award its 6:00 p.m. prime-time slot to the Reverend Al Sharpton.

MSNBC President Phil Griffin offered Uygur a well-paid but lower-profile on-air slot, but Uygur rejected the offer, saying the decision to demote him was polit […]

The death toll in Norway just mounts and mounts… I finally managed to catch that the shooter was able to operate for hours on the island where the summer camp is. So, no wonder there are more than 80 dead there….

diane - 22 July 2011

I thought Glenn Greenwald was pretty brave in his commentary, about that ..I don’t even want to read the nasty comments he likely received…….

Who knows, maybe Matt and Glenn won’t vote for the oBombster, I’ve sure appreciated a whole lot of their commentary…..

marisacat - 22 July 2011

oh hell I see Nader positioning himself to exhort, however vaguely, the vote for Slobster. he started in on how we must have NO MORE! NO MORE corporate SC justices. But he carefully did nto point out that they ALL are corporate hags. All of them.

Oh get a grip Ralph. Or Fucking shut up.

diane - 22 July 2011

ohhhh, …it really is only the hooked up class …can save us ralph …….. sigh …. please stay away from the kids then ….. jeesh, haven’t the “hooked up” done enough fucking harm?

what don’t you get about a barbed hook ralph?

10. diane - 22 July 2011

You might try a pot of “spanish” lavendar for those sweet fuzzy honey makers …..it doesn’t seem too fussy growing in Cali ..it blooms so frequently ….it’s freshly scented (without an OD of saccharine), centuries have claimed its soothing qualities, ……..and from what I’ve seen, …. the humming, bzzzzzer sweeties …. do love it…. ;0)

marisacat - 22 July 2011

oh I will try lavender… lots of people around here grow it, especially as part of their frontage, along with rosemary and various little creeper flowering plants. I think I could keep lavendar alive too…

diane - 22 July 2011

….it will seed freely if it likes the surrounding soil, ….and a real sweet thing: it is a perennial in Cali, you won’t have to replace it, just give it a new hair do, ever once in a while ….

(added dessert, it’s said that butterflies take to its coloring too …. ;0) ….)

It is a good piece, the remarks on fragmentation… and so on.

But then he humps the old tired Democratic tropes.. and loops in Obby as so beleagured.

sigh. Soon to endorse Obby for re election, no doubt.

So many people have utterly discredited themselves imo by sticking with the party and its so throughly fucked figure head.

12. Madman in the Marketplace - 23 July 2011

But then he humps the old tired Democratic tropes.. and loops in Obby as so beleagured.

He could have left that section out … it certainly wasn’t needed, and it’s easy to say that they’re motivated by racism w/out tying it to Barry.

marisacat - 23 July 2011

Everything falls apart when Obama is made central, pivotal. The whole Foundling that we must care for and protect crap. It just does.

Pierce had a wonderful foundation for the piece in the fragmentation aspects… but then………..
