Kabul, Afghanistan: A man walks past burning tankers which were carrying fuel for Nato and US forces [Dar Yasin/AP]

The ”enemy” not only gets a vote, it is possible the ”enemy” placed a targeted vote:

By Associated Press,

WASHINGTON — The Associated Press has learned that more than 20 Navy SEALs from the unit that killed Osama bin Laden were among those lost in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

The operators from SEAL Team Six were flown by a crew of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. That’s according to one current and one former U.S. official. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because families are still being notified of the loss of their loved ones.  . . . .

Will the president go golfing this weekend i wonder. I bet it was on the personal schedule…

2. Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 August 2011

Dude those Talibanies must have been pilling wood for a while…it takes a lot of sticks to get a good burn going like that one in the photo…

marisacat - 6 August 2011

And it is from the current “24 hours in pictures” at the Guardian… seems some fuel tankers were attacked in Kabul, if the legend is accurate… and i just heard on an update that a supply base in NE Afghanistan has been hit now as well.

Everything is going so well.

Here it is, the attack in NE Afgh

Anti-government militants have torched two logistics trucks of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in central Maidan Wardak province on Thursday, an official said. The incident took place on main Kabul-Kundahar highway in Salar area of Sayedabad district late in the afternoon, the governor’s spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, told this news agency. However, no one has so far been killed or wounded. He said, the assailants fled the area soon after security forces arrived in the area, he said.

A local resident in the area, Azeem, on the other hand said that four vehicles of the international soldiers were torched incident. Separately, a roadside bomb blast has destroyed a military vehicle of the foreign soldiers in the vicinity of Maidan Shahr, the provincial capital of the same province, a local official said, on condition of anonymity. The incident took place in Polad Khan the city on Wednesday, he said. All the onboard soldiers had been killed as a result of the explosion, a resident Rahmatullah, said. The NATO-led ISAF soldiers did not comment on this incident, yet.

I cannot pick which to clip… I had not made it there, oh since Wednesday… and it is just a delectable feast.

I do love the one on USA!!USA!! (truly a new Heil, imo) language… yum.

[W]hat is intersting here is how this langauge, although hurled impotently in the vague direction of the ever-springing Arab states, really just recapitulates anti-Soviet Cold War rhetoric. The United States and her allies will support free peoples wherever blah blah. I am a Jelly Donut. Mr. Stroganoff, meet me in the men’s room at the mall! Insofar as I am able to tell, the American Empire locked itself into a particular mode of expression sometime around 1950 and has yet to escape it, try though it might to find a new language for its new-ish world: “The French, so long as they were engaged in revolution, could not get rid of the memory of Napoleon”!

I see Warren Buffet is kissing our boo boo away. He says Omaha still loves us and would love us with a big smacking 4 x A kiss.

IF it could. (Maybe he wants to buy a rating service)

Aw.

I think this tangent prolly fits under the “culture of death” tag:

The son of a heavy hitter in a powerful Mexican drug trafficking has filed explosive legal pleadings in federal court in Chicago accusing the US government of cutting a deal with the the “Sinaloa Cartel” that gave its leadership “carte blanche to continue to smuggle tons of illicit drugs into Chicago and the rest of the United States.”

Narcoshphere

You know if the bonfire gets too big in Talibanieland, when can always just decamp and head for Mexico, we seem to have our operatives already cooking up hot and spicy somethings with nuestros vecinos al sur…

6. marisacat - 6 August 2011

i’ve read whatshisname, el presidente, has a ”relationsip” with one of the cartels… i would imagine a good chance we have thrown in with the same…

oh absolutely we have fomented yet another war

how soon til we hear some war cry that ”the way home is thru Chavez’ – or Evo’s – presidential palacio”

Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 August 2011

There is some deep gaming for sure, remember the warnings about Mexico being the next failed state™

Of course China and Brazil becoming such bosom chums it might complicate such things a little bit…

marisacat - 6 August 2011

The way home is thru Rio. Then on to Peking!! (That should go REALLY well!!)

Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 August 2011

Everybody Samba!
Maybe we could forego war and have a winner take all cage fight between Ooobster and a real socialist, the current female President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff.an ex leftist guerilla who was being tortured for standing against the military while oobster was in ivy league finishing school…

marisacat - 6 August 2011

she seems to b going the Neo liberal route… tho… not a big surprise, bit still….

Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 August 2011

neo liberal you say, damn.

I guess even dyed in the wool ex-revolutionaries sell out when it comes to plomo o plata…

marisacat - 6 August 2011

One thing in the hills another in town.

Which is not say she will stop the day to day improvements put in under Lula, like the small subsidy to poor people and the numerous community health sites… and so on… There are others, I am sure, but those two basics come to mind…

Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 August 2011

BTW its presidente Calderon, carrying on a long tradition of favoring one cartel over another.
Many people believe was installed to aid in the privatization of PEMEX, the state owned oil company.
How they plan to do this without actually producing a failed state is beyond my comprehension. Fuel is subsidized in Mexico and the profits from PEMEX are a majority of the revenues gathered by the Mexican Government, iirc.
Calderon is the one who militarized the drug war, too

7. marisacat - 6 August 2011

enh… here is the “story”… I think there are more details running around than in this CNN International Ed version. Seals, supposedly 3 Afghanis air controllers, a couple of officers, a dog and the dog’s handler… some mission… who knows what.

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) — Twenty-five U.S. special forces killed early Saturday in Afghanistan were on a mission to rescue another team of military personnel pinned down by insurgents, a U.S. military official told CNN.

The helicopter that went down in eastern Afghanistan carried 30 U.S. military members, including 22 Navy SEALs and three other special forces. They were part of a “quick reaction force” sent in to pick up others engaged in a fierce firefight, the official said. . . . . .

Admiral Mook Mullen.

via BBC

Summer in southern Afghanistan is blazing hot in every way; temperatures soar and the fighting season reaches its peak.

But this year it really is boiling hot.

We landed at midnight at Kandahar military airfield, on aircraft bringing the top US military advisor Admiral Mike Mullen and his team to take the temperature here.

Even at that hour, the blazing heat of the day still lingered.

In recent months audacious Taliban attacks have killed leading Afghan figures and key US allies.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff tried to take some of the heat out of that worry.

“We expected these kind of spikes in the campaign including spectacular assassinations,” Admiral Mullen said matter of factly just before boarding the C-32 military plane that took him from the seat of American power ~{ hmm – Cartoon Channel Headquarters??!?? – bhh!} to America’s battle in southern Afghanistan.

“They are not surprising,” he emphasised.

What a dumbfuck.
Imagine then, if they, uh, ~weren’t expecting it.

Oh and by the way, The NAVY!
A natural fit for Afghanistan!

… and should it be needed, we care lovingly for our Rendered A Vegetable Heroes…

We sure don’t hear anymore about “Ward 54” at Walter Reed, where the long term ‘left a vegetable’, but ALIVE!, fallen heroes are…

diane - 6 August 2011

Death merchants indeed, whether a sloooooowwwwww death, or a rapid one, they appear to worship death and decay.

I’m feeling so cynical now, it wouldn’t surprise me if the $$$$$UZ$$$$$$$ took down its own Helicopter. Certainly would be perfect timing for the MIC, oBombster, Tiny Tim and Congress to focus the coming hatchet job entirely on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, as they intended to all along. Hell, it wouldn’t surprise me if Tiny Tim, oBombster and Boner, et al, actively solicited the worthless and meaningless S&P rating, while both complaining it was unfair and irrational to the ‘Press’, yet demanding cuts be made to ‘correct’ it. .

In other nooz, from the ‘sidebar,’ this, while stunningly ugly, certainly isn’t a surprise:

Many of the toughest sentencing laws responsible for the explosion of the U.S. prison population were drafted by the American Legislative Exchange Council, which helps corporations write model legislation. Now a new exposé reveals ALEC has paved the way for states and corporations to replace unionized workers with prison labor. [just like they’ve been doing with non-unionized labor for quite some time now – diane] We speak with Mike Elk, contributing labor reporter at The Nation magazine. He says ALEC and private prison companies “put a mass amount of people in jail, and then they created a situation where they could exploit that.” Elk notes that in 2005 more than 14 million pounds of beef infected with rat feces processed by inmates were not recalled, in order to avoid drawing attention to how many products are made by prison labor.

marisacat - 6 August 2011

well what has been reported about the tainted turkey meat? I have not paid much attention, but have only seen the names it was sold under or thru, not who PROCESSED it…

But it too was a non-acted upon reporting, they have known for months it was tainted meat…. They waited til someone died and have already said it was poor kitchen hygiene, not cooking the meat thoroughly that was the problem… thye point to the fact no one who ate the meat in a restaurant has died and thus the restaurants “followed proper hygiene”. YIKES.

Just great.

BooHooHooMan - 6 August 2011

I’m feeling so cynical now, it wouldn’t surprise me if the $$$$$UZ$$$$$$$ took down its own Helicopter. – diane

Raised my eyebrows a bit when I read it was Seal Team 6, the Bin Laden baggers. Fuck. Truth? From the USG? If true, The irony as all this needless death over the years is that it IS at least? at best?… murder-suicide within the U.S. camp.

Fuck how it sounds. Fuck IT and the knee-jerk “Support the Troops” trope which only consigns them to more killing and dying there. The “Brave Heroes”… “who made the ultimate sacrifice for us” patently tacked on to ALL these stories…gah. Political Lies and alibis told by profiteers, murderers all.
We “must” be there? ” Just Until”. Obama-Tool says. Really?
Still shoveled out and accepted…. after 10 YEARS.

And Diane, no doubt, the S&P downgrade will “work” for moneymen for a time as tacit agreement among global PTB exists to bond their serfs everywhere. Bummer about Ob and Geithner’s domestic political fortunes tho. Their demolition work is done. They’ll take the fall politically, of course whining a bit, and, unfortuneatley for us, probably get to live out the rest comfortable litlle prickish days…

I found it amusing the beginning of last week as some of the Admin floaters went out to press about Geithner.
Will He Stay? Will He Go?”
Which went down like the Hindenburg. Who Cares?
And after the week long runs of Market turds, everybody wants him FIRED. … 😆 from HuffPo to Michelle Bachmann to Sirota to Ron Paul. And the facility with which it has surfaced among the Pwog Bloggers is pretty telling. yeh I think the TPM has been sent out that Geithner is going to take the hit for the S&P.
Heckuva Job, Timmy! 😆

BooHooHooMan - 6 August 2011

Basically with the S&P it means higher interest / higher yields at Treasury auctions. What’s not to love from the bankers POV?
Difficulty in finding buyers? Right now I think the S&P did the dirtywork for the Pols and their Finance Mins setting up another stick up. And the Banksters will do their thing, co-opt regimes willing and able to extract push more “austerity measures” upon their people. Among domestic investors they’ll hawk the shit to fools who think they made the cut: government retainers, doctors, sycophants left amazingly yet to be pruned from the corporate class. 😯 Those guys. LOL

They’ll push the paper on the same fixers at the Pensions in the remaining acts. Who will also put the fix in, (the KNIFE in their own beneficiaries back) when it does come time to stratify who gets paid and who doesn’t. Oh when it does all blow up and the dollar becomes as quaint a notion in settling international accounts as the British Pound in the 1920s,, they Bankers now bank on whatever rumps left minding things stateside will just “work out” who gets the lion’s share and who gets the hindmost.
Win that Future.Tho lets face it, the truly global elites have long been cultivating Victory gardens elsewhere. It’s been a while. Isn’t it about that time when, well, things just don’t work out so well? Isn’t it about that time to see some fleeing, haggard dick-folk as refugees? We could set up a Douchebag Default Swap System, Maybe China will take Geithner. France could get Strauss Kahn back if they took Kerry and Ireland got stuck with Dodd.. Iraq could get Rumsfeld , Cheney and Bush if Pakistan could take in Wolfowitz Summers. Greece should get first dibs on Blankfein and Rubin . And so forth. Obama and the Clintons , oh I dunno – I’m thinkin…Serbia?

We are in such a strange looney dreary place… I just caught the end of a segment on the radio, someone saying the Obby defenders need to get a grip, that much worse things were said about FDR than have been said about him, which is certainly true… One example I caught… The R said that Roosevelt was a cripple as Eleanor gave him syphilis which she got from sleeping with Communists.

Plus ca change. Etc.

But they will whine on.

I landed on a report somewhere, I guess in an opaque way Kerry complained about FOX and without naming her Greta V S, that they must or should stop saying this or that……. and she called him out on it and said “Stop Whining… come on my show, you’ve been invited many times and never respond, and confront me”.

And yeah, Kerry is a whiner. So is Slob… and Snob too. Knob is just an old Irish Bitcher… 😆

So dreary – – – – all of it.

A musician friend just posted this elsewhere on the intertubes:

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you would have $49.00 today! If you purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG, you would have $33.00. If you purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman brothers, you would have $0.00 today. But, if you purchased $1,000 worth of beer, drank all the beer, turned in the aluminum cans for recycling, you would have $214.00. Therefore the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle.
It is called the 401-Keg Plan!!!

Rachel Maddow, A Gentleman and a Scholar.
FFS,,,but.you know, O V E R – R E A C H.

Rachel Maddow Apologizes to Rush Limbaugh.

On her Thursday show, Maddow played a clip of Rush Limbaugh that she said was from Wednesday. The clip featured Limbaugh saying that there wasn’t proof that President Obama was born on August 4, 1961. Maddow used the clip as evidence of the durability of the birther theory among some conservatives.

The problem, though, was that the clip was from a year ago, not the day before. On Friday, Maddow ‘fessed up.

“I’m in a massive brawl with Rush Limbaugh right now, and you know what? Rush Limbaugh wins!” she said. “I was wrong. I lose!”

Maddow explained that right-wing site WorldNetDaily had run an article with the Limbaugh clip on Thursday. The article said that the clip was from the day before, not a year before.

“It was wrong of us to not check WorldNetDaily’s reporting, and I am very sorry,” she said. But she stood by what she called her “overall thesis” about Limbaugh—that he uses racially charged rhetoric about Obama—and played several recent clips of the talk show host to prove her point.

defends her “overall thesis” about Limbaugh. 🙄 OLD.
Just STOP. Step away from the lipstick.
Talking Point Mistress. Eager to Serve. Sloppy.
Apologize for THAT.

marisacat - 7 August 2011

oh I am positive Limbaugh cackled over that one. One of his routines, and sad to say a very good one too, is his staff catch a lot of what is said ABOUT him, esp by all the known names of Big Gasbag Punditry (he is just one, they are legion, LOL) retelling commentary he makes on air. He scoops it up, plays their telling of him.. THEN he plays his own archived words.

he catches them out all the time.

She played, STUPIDLY, right into his hands.

Responding specifically to shouts of “Go home,” by several protesters off stage, Judson Phillips, founder of Tea Party Nation, responded to the audience:These people probably come from a trailer park because they don’t have real jobs,” he said. “Why don’t you go home?”

Phillips told the crowd that protests of this sort distract from the Tea Party message.

“We were trying to talk and people are trying to shut us up,” said.

Crappy, slanted article link

‘Cause people who live in trailers don’t have real jobs and it’s their own damn fault for being so low-class…

At least this Koch brothers creation is good for a laugh or two every now and then

17. BooHooHooMan - 7 August 2011

HA! Something half worth a damn on DK.

The change to Daily Kos 4 seems to have gone smoothly. Now it’s time to look at changing the site’s commitment to the Democratic Party. I realize there aren’t many Republicans worth voting for on their own merits and I doubt that a third party can be effective in this country any time soon. Still, events from the 2006 elections through now show that blindly supporting Democrats, regardless of their positions, has been ineffective at getting liberal policies implemented.

The only thing most politicians care about is getting elected. The amount of money we can raise to help them do that doesn’t compete with the amount of money they can get from the elites who dictate policy, not only in this country, but in the world.

That leaves us with one weapon: Withholding our votes.::

Plenty of good tids And,, LOL the diarist is almost past the Kubler-Rossian Denial Stage over Nader!.Been there, fellah!

I realize the risk — if the Naderites had voted for Gore in 2000, the country would be in much better shape than it is now 🙄 — but I don’t see what other choices we have. Events in Wisconsin have shown that we’re better off with a Democratic minority if the Democrats in that minority are willing to fight for Democratic principles than we are with a Democratic majority ruled by CorporaDems.

Right now, the only question about the direction of the country’s governance is how fast it will continue to move to the right. The pace would be faster under Republicans, but all that means is that the country would deteriorate faster, not that it would stop deteriorating or begin to improve under Dems.

To put it more dramatically, if we can’t change the direction the elites are moving the country, we’re going off the cliff anyway, it’s just a question of when.

Now you’re getting it! On to the Bargaining Stage.

Of course, by trying this strategy, we run the risk that we’ll initially wind up with a Democratic Party that is in the minority and still doesn’t fight Republican extremism.

But at least we won’t have to hold our noses and vote for turds like Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey. Then again, if you want to win the War on Women, you probably don’t want to continue arming the opponent.

Okay, so he’s stuck now in the Bargaining Stage – the folly of reform through the Party.. All he has left is the Depression and Acceptance and he’ll be fine! Let GO! Live with INTEGRITY the days you have!

18. BooHooHooMan - 7 August 2011

Any Democrat still with a brain who would sit down and read the whole back story (Jane Mayer book and her articles in The New Yorker and The American Prospect) on Clarence’s ascension to the court and how the vote went down in the senate, the horrid behind the scenes during the hearings, would “get it”.

A huge component of Thomas’ being placed on the court was Biden.

45,000 Verizon Union Workers Strike in Contract Dispute

“Why do the people at the bottom always have to give back concessions?” said Anita Long, who has been with Verizon for 32 years. “Why is it not the top management giving back, when my CEO brings home $23 million in one year, I have a problem with that, but you want to take away my pensions, my medical benefits?” [know you’re right! –diane]

“A company with those kinds of profits, where the CEO Ivan Seidenberg makes 300 times the salary of the average worker — he made $18 million just last year — to demand the sweeping cuts that they have put on the table is outrageous and unacceptable,” Master said.

In a statement on their websites, the unions said that Verizon has already earned $6 billion in net profits this year.

(and yeah, hear ya BooHooHooMan about those ethers fuckin wit ya I’ve tried to post this comment about six times now, and I don’t think it’s just the dial-up, that’s giving me the blues …..)

It sat in Moderation for an hour – I was sound asleep, til a few mins ago.. all day I wake up but go back to sleep immediately… too frantic a week I think…

diane - 7 August 2011

oh, it wasn’t the moderation hon, certainly nothing you did or didn’t do (I wasn’t able to even post a comment to sit in moderation for five out of six attempts), ……it was the fact that every time I linked to the thread, I wasn’t able to even post a comment. When I accessed the thread to post a comment to it, either the box for the email and name entry was missing, or my internet access ultimately disconnected right before I was going to post, though I was having no disconnect problems accessing other sites where I might comment.

and yeah, truly a frantic week …I see they let that mother fucker Graner (of Abu Graib infamy ) out on good behaviour (apparently code words for sick sociopath in PA) ….sigh ….

in re Graner

In 1998, when he was working as a guard in a state prison, he was accused by one inmate of slipping a razor blade into his food.

…on the afternoon shift at the Fayette County [Pennsylvania – diane] Prison, Graner decided to play a practical joke on a new guard named Robert Tajc.

“He squirted Mace in this dude’s coffee,” remembers Carl Opel Jr., another guard. “Just to be a jack-off.”

“It was a joke,” says Tajc, who drank the coffee, became nauseated, vomited and went home sick.

This, say the guards, was the daily culture of the afternoon shift, where Graner worked until May 17, 1996…

way way back, in the immediate aftermath of AG breaking and the identification of the low level people… (not like trials and incarceration went any higher than the lowest levels) a prisoner who had been released, 100% exonerated by DNA test after serving 22 years for rape came forward to talk about Ganer. How brutal he was inside the prison (a wholly unexplored reality of AG, it mirrors our prison system, in too many instances) and had talked of going to Iraq to get some ragheads.. etc. (which of course is nothing more than what the war was all about, if we are truthful)

I heard the exonerated prisoner exactly ONCE on CNN, and they did do online interviews and vid with him at their sites. But that was it.

And …well yeah, there is that worst travesty, …that Rumsfeld, et al, …never even went to prison, and they deliberately, with full knowledge of the consequences, placed scum like Graner in positions where hideous abuse reigned….knowing scum like Graner would have the public in such an outcry, that the public would feel surely that the DOD had been duped by a bad apple, when all long, the DOD/MIC deliberately placed ….that bad apple………

marisacat - 7 August 2011

yes I saw that too… Graner I mean.

marisacat - 7 August 2011
