Suit: Obama administration won’t ID Intelligence Oversight Board

A lawsuit filed Tuesday claims that the Obama administration is refusing to disclose the identities of those serving on a key panel that oversees the intelligence community.

The suit filed in San Francisco by the Electronic Frontier Foundation accuses the Office of the Director of National Intelligence of failing to comply with a Freedom of Information Act request submitted in February seeking information on appointments to the Intelligence Oversight Board. (The complaint is posted here.)

Under an executive order issued by President Barack Obama, intelligence agencies are required to report violations of surveillance laws to the IOB, which is a component of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board. Obama also restored the IOB’s authority to refer violations of law to the Attorney General.

Obama has announced the appointment of 11 individuals to the PIAB, but the White House has never publicly disclosed the membership of the IOB, the lawsuit says. (The co-chairs of the PIAB, former senators David Boren and Chuck Hagel, were announced with some fanfare by Obama back in 2009.)

“The IOB has a critically important mission – civilian oversight of America’s intelligence activities. The board exists to make sure government agencies are not overstepping their authority and abusing citizens’ rights,” EFF’S Mark Rumold said in a statement. “History has shown that intelligence encies overseeing their own behavior is like the fox guarding the henhouse. If the IOB is ineffective, impaired, or short-staffed, that’s information Americans need to know.”

A spokesman for ODNI declined to comment on the new suit. The White House didn’t immediately respond to a query from POLITICO about the IOB’s membership.

Obama Humiliates the Black Caucus – and They Pretend Not to Notice

By June of 2008, it was clear to Obama and his handlers that there was no insult that African Americans would not gladly endure – even cheer – for the chance to see one of their own in the Oval Office. For the first time in history, Blacks had made not a single demand in a presidential election; their bamboozlement was complete. A no-risk, public humiliation of Black folks was in order, for the benefit of white voters who might still be wondering if Obama was really the kind of Negro who could be trusted with the keys to the White House. What better day to denigrate Black men, than Father’s Day?

With a feigned familiarity dripping with contempt, Obama scorned and mocked cardboard characters named “Pookie” and “Ray-Ray” for “acting like boys instead of men,” sitting on the couch watching television while feeding cold chicken to their children who were then let out to roam the streets. “You and I know how true this is in the African-American community,” said the candidate.

The larger, intended audience – white people, via corporate media – read the reassuring news: “Obama Tells Black Fathers to Act Like Men” ( AFP ), “Obama Calls on Black Men to Be Better Fathers” ( U.S. News & World Report ), “Black Fathers Missing From Too Many Lives” ( The Age ), “Obama Calls for More Responsibility From Black Fathers” ( NYT ).

Obama shrewdly chose “the politically conservative (in Black terms) Apostolic Church of God as the venue for his blanket Black male denunciation,” as a reminder to “whites that he was no longer a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, formerly pastored by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, also located on Chicago’s South Side,” we wrote.

Like others, we at BAR were outraged:

“Can one imagine Obama or any other presidential aspirant repeatedly hectoring any other ethnic group on moral issues? Singling out Jews for excessive materialism? The Irish for excessive drinking? Of course not; that would be unfair and politically suicidal. But there are large regions of the white body politic in which it is not only acceptable, but damn near required, that politicians demonstrate their impatience with the alleged moral shortcomings of Black people. Barack Obama trolls for votes in those foul waters, at the cost of Black people’s dignity.”

Three years later, in the same week that he bowed down to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before the assembled nations of the world, in New York City, Obama took his church voice to the Congressional Black Caucus annual awards dinner to very pointedly demand that Blacks stop bugging their president about the economic catastrophe that has befallen them, and his own role in it. “Take off your bedroom slippers. Put on your marching shoes,” Obama hectored . “Shake it off. Stop complainin’. Stop grumblin’. Stop cryin’. We are going to press on. We have work to do.”

Black Caucus chairman Rep. Emanuel Cleaver had earlier told reporters, “If Bill Clinton had been in the White House and had failed to address this [Black unemployment] problem, we probably would be marching on the White House.” But Obama came to lay down the law: any marching that you might do will be for my re-election.

The well-oiled crowd cheered.

Los Angeles congresswoman Maxine Waters seemed to be the only Black lawmaker capable of an adult response:

“I’m not sure who the president was addressing. I found that language a bit curious. The president spoke to the Hispanic Caucus… he certainly didn’t tell them to stop complaining and he never would say that to the gay and lesbian community who really pushed him on don’t ask don’t tell or even in a speech to APEC, he would never say to the Jewish community stop complaining about Israel.”

But she won’t hold it against Obama.

3. Madman in the Marketplace - 28 September 2011: Observations of a Jailed Journalist

Between when the Occupy Wall Street protests began on Sept. 17 and this weekend’s wave of media coverage stemming from the arrests, the protesters have complained about being largely ignored by traditional media, including the major national and even metropolitan newspapers, the cable TV news channels and the local network news stations. Meanwhile, argue the protesters, similarly sized Tea Party demonstrations in recent years have received considerable coverage. The general consensus among the Occupy Wall Street protesters was that it was important to document constantly what is happening, and to present their own story when other media hasn’t.

The protesters have also claimed that the media coverage they did receive painted them in an unflattering light and hasn’t accurately represented them. Saturday’s New York Times article characterized the protesters as uninformed, mostly white hippies and trust-funded anti-capitalists. As a result, the protesters I spoke with were quite media savvy and conscious of their need to represent themselves in an attempt to legitimize their cause, which they’ve been doing on their website, on Twitter and on Youtube. In fact, they have an entire media team assembled at Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan, where about a dozen laptops are being powered by a portable generator, and citizen journalists are constantly uploading new footage.

The Occupy Wall Street demonstrators have been criticized, including in the aforementioned New York Times piece, as unorganized and lacking in any concrete goals, other than to raise awareness about economic corruption.

But as we all sat in a jail, I noticed an interesting thing happen.

People began to talk very seriously about organizing in a more cohesive way than they have been. Jailhouse rookies, who had never been arrested or involved in radical political activities, listened attentively as experienced activists spoke about the need to set clear demands in order to rally broader public support for specific outcomes.

I don’t know what’s going to happen to Occupy Wall Street as a movement. Maybe it will fizzle out, maybe it will grow. I do know that whatever happens will be documented. And I know that there’s a history of activist movements being bolstered when leaders and followers alike are jailed together.

My cellmate Daniel Gross, a protester who volunteers as an organizer with the Industrial Workers of the World Union, helped create the first union for Starbucks employees.

“I think the NYPD is really going to try to spin what happened today,” Gross told the group, as he handed out his contact information. “I think that we should organize our own press conference.”

Around 10:30 p.m. the police began letting us leave our cell in groups of two. Before leaving, many traded contact information through smuggled business cards and contraband pens.

The still-jailed cheered the newly free.

Supposedly she shopped alone for about 30 mins and again they said she bought cleaning supplies.

Many left-leaning school reformers believe this largely as a last resort. These are typically liberals who believe in public education but have become frustrated with what they see as union resistance to much-needed reforms. There is no doubt that unions oppose many reforms. The question is, should they? Much of the time, I think they should.

Many right-leaning reformers, and some liberals as well, are simply in the business of union-busting, seeking to dismantle a powerful political opponent while ushering for-profit schools in through the side door, and handing out lucrative contracts to political allies in the private sector. For a good example of this second camp, go to Scott Walker’s Wisconsin. Or follow Michelle Rhee around the country – to Florida, Nevada, or wherever she is voicing her support for union-busting at the moment.

Right or left, this is essentially the neoliberal approach to school reform. Technocratic, choice-based, with a troubling dose of private, for-profit groups thrown into to the mix. Mayor Bloomberg’s New York schools are a perfect example of technocratic, anti-democratic leadership at the top, coupled with private contractors, high-stakes testing companies, and union-busting advocacy groups working from the ground up.

The Pentagon has burned 9,500 copies of Army Reserve Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer’s memoir “Operation Dark Heart,” his book about going undercover in Afghanistan.

A Department of Defense official tells Fox News that the department purchased copies of the first printing because they contained information which could cause damage to national security.

The U.S. Army originally cleared the book for release.

The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency attempted to block the book about the tipping point in Afghanistan and a controversial pre-9/11 data mining project called “Able Danger.” . . . .

[S]haffer, who was undercover at the time, said there was “stunned silence” at the meeting after he told the executive director of the commission and others that Atta was identified as early as 2000 by “Able Danger.”

“Dr. Philip Zelikow approached me in the corner of the room. ‘What you said today is very important. I need you to get in touch with me as soon as you return from your deployment here in Afghanistan’,” Shaffer said.

Once back in the U.S., Shaffer says he contacted the commission. Without explanation, the commission was no longer interested. An inspector general report by the Department of Defense concluded there was no evidence to support the claims of Shaffer and others. But Fox News has obtained an unredacted copy of the IG report containing the names of witnesses, who backed up Shaffer’s story when contacted for comment.

Atta was the alleged ringleader of the Sept. 11 hijackers and piloted American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center.

Shaffer spoke to Fox News before he was asked by the military not to discuss the book. He confirmed efforts to block the book and other details. . . . . . .

marisacat - 30 September 2011: Well I have always used “we” for the horror that we wage. From the very early years of Vietnam…. I wasn’t necessarily concious at the time for Korea… but ever since.

I wish I had greater physical courage… or had the courage, ever, to withhold tax… but I lack that sort of ability/physical courage to go against the State. One reason I love protest so much…

By “that”, Piepke means the SPD-Green majority, which in 2005 set up the harshest unemployment benefit system in Europe. Hartz IV forces those eligible to take “one-euro jobs”, move house if their accommodation is judged too costly and obey a long list of bureaucratic stipulations on pain of losing their allowance. “The most drastic cut in social security since 1949” was what the conservativeFrankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung called it when it was presented (on 30 June 2004).

It kills me, I’m a completely crunchy, organic ganja burning hippy, but every time I hear the adjective “green” attached to any kind of human activity I immediately think, “BULLSHIT”

I think we need a new language, because most of the words and their constructed metaphors are entirely co-opted by the fucking profiteers…

15. Ganjafied Gabacho - 30 September 2011: Here are some of the lessons I learned the hard way while living and working in Mesa, Arizona (home of State Senator Russell Pearce who is currently being forced into a special elections):

Art. . The first thing I learned was colors. In Arizona you are one of two colors. First there is White, a primary-majority color. Next there is Brown, a secondary- demoralized color.

In Mesa, the color brown has two shades. One shade is a “Legal Brown” – which is tolerable so long as you don’t come across as “too ethnic”. The other shade is “Illegal Brown” – which is considered morally reprehensible and should promptly “go back to where they came from”. “Legal Brown” is often lumped together with “Illegal Brown”, where “Legal Browns” get deported by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. I am lucky enough to pass for Anglo even though I’m Puerto Rican.

My husband, a very obvious Brown, is not as fortunate. … victim of racial profiling …. It happened more often after the signing of SB 1070, and it doesn’t matter to law enforcement that he was born a U.S. citizen.

Economics. The decrease in enrollment in our schools has been devastating for Arizona but it was the teachers that were hit the hardest. Many families left out of fear. When families fled, their money went with them . Not only did teachers suffer salary freezes but now many were playing the role of special counselors. The students were nervous. Several asked me if it was true that Arpaio was going to take them out of their beds at night and arrest them. These kids were 6 and 7 year olds. Imagine trying to teach a group of children who were afraid they were going to be deported.. Their young minds were focused on whether or not their families were going to be ripped apart instead of education.
