I don’t see it matters much.. Slob has Official Boxed WH M & Ms … the most hilarious thing I’ve read is that the apples and fruit that Memsab mandates be in bowls all over the place have to be cleaned out and removed as they spoil, but people go fishing to find more boxes of the M & Ms.

3. diane - 29 March 2012: I don’t know anything about the author, but I bumped into this article, re today’s protest in Spain, shortly before it began:

Spain’s economy was based fundamentally on two big sectors: construction and tourism. The first imploded and left in its wake more than 1.5m unemployed Spaniards with minimal educational backgrounds and an uncertain future. Tourism has continued to function at an acceptable, but lower level. The crisis has also affected European tourists.

Can an advanced economy sustain this level of unemployment? The answer is ‘No’. Fears of social unrest are growing each day. The solutions being offered up by the Spanish government, under the strict direction of the EU technocrats, threaten to continue undermining growth and contributing to unemployment.

No-one knows in which sectors, or when, some of these millions of lost jobs can be recovered. The budget discipline being demanded by German Chancellor Angela Merkel is breaking the economy. In reality, Spain is already a country in recession and this year will suffer a 1.75 per cent decline in gross domestic product, according to government figures.

To achieve the deficit reduction imposed by Brussels (5.3 per cent), Spain is being asked to cut spending by 45bn euros. The conservative government of Mariano Rajoy carried out its first cuts of 15bn euros shortly after taking office just 100 days ago.

The consequences are plain to see: public services have been weakened. Hospitals have been closed, women’s service centres shuttered, elderly home care reduced, day care centres shut down and thousands of teachers and doctors laid off.

marisacat - 29 March 2012: Parts of Spain are not cming back as I see it… same as here. they built developments whwere the few early purchasers, a mix of Spanish and foreign retirees are now isolated in nearly empty developments with few services. And no one around.

We can’t really point fingers, it’s too much like here… From Cali to Florida… and we will never admit to how many are unemployed underemployed.

What a mess.

TOKYO (AP) — One of Japan’s crippled nuclear reactors still has fatally high radiation levels and hardly any water to cool it, according to an internal examination that renews doubts about the plant’s stability.

A tool equipped with a tiny video camera, a thermometer, a dosimeter and a water gauge was used to assess damage inside the No. 2 reactor’s containment chamber for the second time since the tsunami swept into the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant a year ago.

The data collected Tuesday showed the damage from the disaster was so severe, the plant operator will have to develop special equipment and technology to tolerate the harsh environment and decommission the plant, a process expected to last decades.

The other two reactors that had meltdowns could be in even worse shape. The No. 2 reactor is the only one officials have been able to closely examine so far.

Tuesday’s examination with an industrial endoscope detected radiation levels up to 10 times the fatal dose inside the chamber. Plant officials previously said more than half of the melted fuel has breached the core and dropped to the floor of the primary containment vessel, some of it splashing against the wall or the floor.

Particles from melted fuel have probably sent radiation levels up to a dangerously high 70 sieverts per hour inside the container, said Junichi Matsumoto, spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power Co. The figure far exceeds the highest level previously detected, 10 sieverts per hour, which was detected around an exhaust duct shared by No. 1 and 2 units last year.

“It’s extremely high,” he said, adding that an endoscope would last only 14 hours in those conditions. “We have to develop equipment that can tolerate high radiation” when locating and removing melted fuel during the decommissioning.

The probe also found that the containment vessel — a beaker-shaped container enclosing the core — had cooling water up to only 60 centimeters (2 feet) from the bottom, far below the 10 meters (yards) estimated when the government declared the plant stable in December. The plant is continuing to pump water into the reactor.

Video footage taken by the probe showed the water inside was clear but contained dark yellow sediments, believed to be fragments of rust, paint that had been peeled off or dust.

Anna Brown: 29-year-old Black Woman Dies in Jail After Being Dragged By Police Out of Hospital

She yelled from a wheelchair at St. Mary’s Health Center security personnel and Richmond Heights police officers that her legs hurt so badly she couldn’t stand.

She had already been to two other hospitals that week in September, complaining of leg pain after spraining her ankle.

This time, she refused to leave.

A police officer arrested Brown for trespassing. He wheeled her out in handcuffs after a doctor said she was healthy enough to be locked up.

Brown was 29. A mother who had lost custody of two children. Homeless. On Medicaid. And, an autopsy later revealed, dying from blood clots that started in her legs, then lodged in her lungs.

She told officers she couldn’t get out of the police car, so they dragged her by her arms into the station. They left her lying on the concrete floor of a jail cell, moaning and struggling to breathe. Just 15 minutes later, a jail worker found her cold to the touch.
Officers suspected Brown was using drugs. Autopsy results showed she had no drugs in her system.

Six months later, family members still wonder how Brown’s sprained ankle led to her death in police custody, and whether anyone — including themselves — is to blame.

There seems to be no simple answer.

St. Mary’s officials say they did all they were supposed to do for Brown. Richmond Heights police said they trusted a doctor who said she was fit for jail.

There is a story running about, of an attempt from workers to organise at some hosptial that is run by nuns… and the nuns have done EVERyTHING to shut down the attempt. I forget the details now, but it is a stunner.

Something like this pops up fairly regularly, and every so often you get a big scandal like that CA hospital a few years ago that was dumping patients at the curb to avoid the cost of treating them.

marisacat - 31 March 2012: oh I remember the videos from Cali…. from the woman who died in the waiting room, as she was ignored – to a patient dumped BY the hospital on LA’s Skid Row, it was caught on a liquor store security cam iirc…. I think still with an IV in his or her arm. All they will do in an emergency is patch you up, very basically and “street” you.

People have thi odd illusion that you get years of cancer treatment for free, or some silly idiocy…

I heard a couple of things this week, Insurance companies, in some instances the biggest and “best” known, like Anthm BX here in Cali, are, with no notice, advising people in the plan and paying for coverage that the doctors at this or that hosptial are no longer covered in the plan. Geesh, think of it. No notice and no recourse, perfectly with in regulations…

That and hosptials closing ERs, clinics, what few there have been, closing…. AND even standing hospitals closing whole departments… I was STUNNED to learn that Cal Pac Med Cntr – where I was, no longer has a pediatrics unit. They now own so many hosptials in SF and the Bay Area, under “Sutter Health” that a ped’s patient might get treated in the ER but will be shuffled off to St Luke’s. No unit to care for a child.

I still say, all of this hoopla is already academic… the only decent or reliable care (within a problem prone industry, let’s be honest) will be for cash up front patients..

marisacat - 31 March 2012: I agree… and I have to say Kaiser wich of course has a strong hold here in California and the BA, started that years ago…. You have to go over there to have a baby… which I think now is Redwood City, south of SF, but up in Marin they have a plastic surgery department… A center for all the Kaiser Permanente Hospitals.. and even if your doctor recommends a surgery for medical reasons, someone i knew at work was referred by her Kaiser physician for breast reduction, you have to pay 30% (or that was the breakdown, 12 years ago)….

Back pain centers, athletic repair centers, orthopedic care… on and on…

When my neighbor Philip would visit me, he always remarked that as I was stuck in a room I couldn’t see it, but there were few patients… plenty of docts and nurses, people in white and pastel, but not many patients..

well hell, of course, if you close down specialities… – why they kept me as long as they did, I didn’t understand then nor now.

An official with the Maryland lottery says a record $640 million winning lottery ticket has been sold in Maryland, and there could be others nationwide, the Associated Press reports.

Carole Everett, director of communications for the Maryland Lottery, says the winning Mega Millions ticket was purchased at a retailer in Baltimore County. She said it’s too early to know any other information about the lucky ticket-holder or whether others were sold elsewhere in the nation.

I like our Mayor … he’s been fairly good for the city, but he ran a terrible campaign against Walker in the last race.

Interestingly, should he win he’d be both Governor and Mayor of Milwaukee, a city which the rest of the state, and often the Governor’s office, has delighted in shitting all over what it needs. There is apparently no statutory reason why he can’t hold both offices.

It’s going to be a couple of interesting months until June.

WASHINGTON — Home prices fell in January for a fifth straight month in most major U.S. cities, as modest sales increases have yet to boost prices.

The Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller home-price index released Tuesday showed that prices dropped in January from December in 16 of 19 cities tracked.

The steepest decline was in San Francisco, where prices declined 2.5 percent from December to January. Atlanta and Portland also experienced decrases of more than 2 percent. Prices increased in Miami, Phoenix and Washington. Price information for Charlotte was delayed and therefore not included in the report.

The biggest reason why prices are still falling is foreclosures, which are still high across the country. Foreclosures and short sales — when a lender accepts less for a home than what is owed on a mortgage — are selling at an average discount of 20 percent.

Foreclosure activity surged in February across half of U.S. states. The pace of foreclosures is increasing after all 50 U.S. states reached a $25 billion settlement last month with the nation’s five biggest mortgage lenders over foreclosure abuses. Many foreclosures had been stuck in limbo as the 16-month government investigation into foreclosure paperwork problems dragged on. ….

19. Madman in the Marketplace - 31 March 2012: From Wednesday: Successful Fare Strike This Morning – Tens of Thousands Ride NYC Subways for Free

This morning before rush hour, teams of activists, many from Occupy Wall Street, in conjunction with rank and file workers from the Transport Workers Union Local 100 and the Amalgamated Transit Union, opened up more than 20 stations across the city for free entry. As of 10:30 AM, the majority remain open. No property was damaged. Teams have chained open service gates and taped up turnstiles in a coordinated response to escalating service cuts, fare hikes, racist policing, assaults on transit workers’ working conditions and livelihoods — and the profiteering of the super-rich by way of a system they’ve rigged in their favor.

For the last several years, riders of public transit have been under attack. The cost of our Metrocards has been increasing, while train and bus service has been steadily reduced. Budget cuts have precipitated station closings and staff/safety reductions. Police routinely single out young black and Latino men for searches at the turnstile. Layoffs and attrition means cutting staff levels to the bare minimum, reducing services for seniors and disabled riders. At the same time, MTA workers have been laid off and have had their benefits drastically reduced. Contract negotiations are completely stalled.

Working people of all occupations, colors and backgrounds are expected to sacrifice to cover the budget cut by paying more for less service. But here’s the real cause of the problem: the rich are massively profiting from our transit system. Despite the fact that buses and subways are supposed to be a public service, the government and the MTA have turned the system backwards—into a virtual ATM for the super-rich. Instead of using our tax money to properly fund transit, Albany and City Hall have intentionally starved transit of public funds for over twenty years; the MTA must resort to bonds (loans from Wall Street) to pay for projects and costs. The MTA is legally required to funnel tax dollars and fares away from transportation costs and towards interest on these bonds, called “debt service.” This means Wall Street bondholders receive a huge share of what we put into the system through the Metrocards we buy and the taxes we pay: more than $2 billion a year goes to debt service, and this number is expected to rise every year. If trends continue, by 2018 more than one out of every five dollars of MTA revenue will head to a banker’s pockets.

This much is clear: the MTA’s priorities are all out of whack. This fare strike is a means for workers and riders to fight for shared interests together — but this is just a first step. All of us — the 99% — have an interest in full-service public transportation system that treats its ridership and employees with dignity.

The MTA is a shared, public service — fund it with tax revenues.
Eliminate free money for bondholders at the expense of taxpayers.
End the assault on worker’s livelihoods.

Like so many states it is several within one… I barely know it. And mostly know the Gulf coast side… not the Atlantic side.
But, another world.

I know Rubio consistently says no, when asked about the Veepessa spot and sounds very credible saying it, but I still think he is a viable possibility for Mittens… I don’t know much about the NM woman, forget if she is Lt Gov or state AG… but I think Mittnes has to go in that direction…. South, Latino/Latina etc.

I suppose it would work for Mittens to shore up the West… tho I will be interested in the final vote totals for each in the West, Oregon, Nevada and so on. Pretty clear reading around the edges that Slobby would prefer to be collecting more cash out here. Coming in too slow.

We’ll see. Mother Slob was just out here, to commission a … Coast Guard ship I think it was. I don’t think there was much interest.
