Turbaco, Colombia: A donkey foal is dressed as the mascot of the US Democrats to welcome Barack Obama to the VI America’s Summit to be held in nearby Cartagena | Joaquin Sarmiento /Reuters

No need to comment, really.  Why make even a lame ‘jackass’ joke and insult the donkeys, mules, asses and so forth of the world.

I had nearly given up on finding a pic tonight, when this appeared in a gallery of the current 24 hour cycle at the Guardian.

We are blessed!  And it shows.

Barry was quick to lecture the other leaders about drug legalization:

Drug trafficking is a big topic at this weekend’s Summit of the Americas, but President Obama still opposes one suggestion: De-criminalization of drugs.

He doesn’t mind the debate, however.

“It is entirely legitimate to have a conversation about whether the laws in place are ones that are doing more harm than good in certain places,” Obama said Saturday during the 33-nation summit in Cartagena, Colombia.

He added, however, that his administration believes “that legalization is not the answer.”

“The capacity of a large-scale drug trade to dominate certain countries — if they were allowed to operate legally without any constraint — could be just as corrupting if not more corrupting than the status quo,” Obama said.

That last paragraph is just so incredibly stupid … like the MOB took over everything here when prohibition ended?

Jeebus we’re “led” by such lying assholes.

marisacat - 15 April 2012

Leaders made of stone. But STRONG!! Not rigid! STRONG!!!!!!!

Yes Colombia would like to legalize… Mexico would like a legal zone, at the least, in the North (Slob sent Biden to Mexico to lecture them, last month I think).

We are blessed…..

😆

GEITHNER, to David Gregory on NBC’s “Meet the Press”:

“Americans should feel much more confident today than they felt any time in the last five or six years.”

ts - 15 April 2012

I’ll be more confident when Timmeh is standing on the side of the road with a cardboard sign saying “will toady for food.”

marisacat - 15 April 2012

He claims he is only staying to the end of this segment of the merry-go-round…. but yeah.

Horrible drip of a man.

BOB SCHIEFFER, on CBS’s “Face the Nation”: “Are you planning to stay past the first term, by the way?”

GEITHNER: “The president asked me to stay and I said I’d stay to the end of the first term.”

SCHIEFFER: “And that’s it?

GEITHNER: “That seems like the right amount of time for me.”

ts - 15 April 2012

He’s certainly got a multimillion dollar sinecure waiting for him when he leaves. Probably with JP Morgan, since his lips were farthest up Jamie Dimon’s ass.

3. ts - 15 April 2012

Laugh out loud quote of the day: Obama, “I’ll be angry if the Secret Service sex scandal is true.” [snicker] I suppose anger is a relative term here. Oh, and I see he’s called for a rigorous probe [snicker]! God, do they even vet this stuff before he says it anymore? Just how do you do a rigorous investigation, anyway? While jogging? I suppose we can’t have any fat Secret Service people with Mrs. Eat your vegetables around.

marisacat - 15 April 2012

He’ll force feed them peas from the WH garden. That’ll work.

Kessler, who has no hesitancy about speaking up, basically lays it at Slob’s door. Over and over he refuses to get rid of the head of the SS… from Salahi mess onward.

😆 Good Luck!!

4. marisacat - 16 April 2012

So blessed. Cpunch….

[I]n fact, underneath the PR offensive are government documents admitting that nuclear power plants are deadly dangerous.

The first analysis of the consequences of a nuclear plant accident was done in 1957 by

Brookhaven National Laboratory, established a decade before by the since disbanded U.S. Atomic Energy Commission to develop civilian uses of nuclear technology. Its “WASH-740” report said a major nuclear plant accident could result in “3,400 killed and about 43,000 injured” and property damage “could be about 7 billion dollars.” However, this analysis was based on nuclear power plants a fifth to a tenth of the size of those being constructed in the 1960s.

So Brookhaven National Laboratory conducted a second study in the mid-60s, “WASH-740-update.” It stated repeatedly that for a major nuclear plant accident, “the possible size of such a disaster might be equal to that of the State of Pennsylvania.” It increased the number of deaths to 45,000, injuries to 100,000 and property damage up to $280 billion.

Then, in 1982, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Department of Energy’s Sandia National Laboratories did a study they titled “Calculation of Reactor Accident Consequences” that analyzed the accident consequences for every nuclear plant in the U.S. It projected, for example, for a meltdown with a breach of containment at the Indian Point 2 plant just north of New York City: 50,000 “peak early fatalities; 167,000 “peak early injuries;” 14,000 “peak cancer deaths;” and $314 billion in “scaled costs” of property damage in, it noted, “1980 dollars.”

As to likelihood, in 1985 there was a formal written exchange between U.S. Congressman Edward Markey’s House Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations and the NRC in which the panel asked: “What does the commission and NRC staff believe the likelihood of a severe core melt accident to be in the next twenty years for those reactors now operating and those expected to operate during that time?”

The NRC response: “In a population of 100 reactors operating over a period of 20 years, the crude cumulative probability of such an accident would be 45%.” But then it went on that this might be off by “a factor of about 10 above and below.”

Thus, the chances of a meltdown during a 20-year period among 100 U.S. nuclear plant plants (there are 104 today) would be about 50-50.

These are not good odds for disaster. . . . . .

😆

Have a nice 50-50 day….

San Onofre, the one south of me on the water – with a little concrete spit of a sea wall and in a tangle of fault lines AND is, of course, from the 70s…, is shut now and for the foreseeable future I think. Which means MUCH MORE is wrong with it than tubes that are wearing out very very fast and they don’t know why.

Thankfully.

Romney has chosen Mankiw as his economic advisor. No doubt he would be the chair of the CEA in a prospective Romney presidency as well, just as he was under Bush.

http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2012/04/romneys-lead-economist-urges-policies-that-will-cause-the-next-financial-crisis.html

We know objectively that Mankiw, Bush, and Romney do not actually favor competition in financial regulation – for none of them opposed the OCC and OTS’ scorched earth campaign to preempt state efforts to regulate predatory lending and seek to reduce mortgage fraud. The states attempted to offer a competitive alternative to Mankiw, Greenspan, Bernake, and Bush’s indifference to fraud by elites. That competition could have led to vastly better outcomes for the citizens of the States that wished to be most vigorous against fraud and the nation. Mankiw was Chairman of Bush’s Council of Economic Advisors during the worst excesses of the federal agencies efforts to prevent the states from regulating entities (e.g., bank holding company affiliates not subject to federal regulation) that spread the green slime through the financial system. He did not oppose preemption. Mankiw and his political patrons do not favor competition in financial regulation – they favor regulation so weak that it will be ineffective. They hate financial regulations that are successful because such regulations challenge their world view that denigrates democratic government and government regulators.

Romney’s choice of Mankiw, one of the leading architects of and apologists for the crisis, as his leading economic advisor would be a superb issue for Obama to use in his reelection campaign but for one tiny problem. The Obama administration’s policies on financial regulation are created by the likes of Rubin, Summers, Geithner, and Bernanke. They differ only on the margins from Mankiw. The entire crew of leading economists for the last three Presidents and Romney has proven catastrophically wrong about financial regulation. The remarkable thing is that they do not drop their dogmas even after they engineer multiple crises over the course of three decades. We will soon experience the 30th anniversary of the Garn-St Germain Act of 1982, which set off a renewed “competition in laxity” among the States (principally California and Texas; whose S&Ls, collectively, caused roughly two-thirds of all S&L losses) and produced the criminogenic environment that led to the second phase of the S&L debacle.

There are economists and scholars from other fields that have track records of success as financial regulators. Note to Obama and Romney: there is no rule requiring you to choose as your leading advisors the purveyors of green slime and crisis. A significant number of Mankiw’s students walked out of his class to protest his presentation of failed dogma in the guise of economics. It is time for all of us as citizens to walk out on politicians who choose ethical and economics failures like Mankiw and Geithner as their advisors.

marisacat - 16 April 2012

I loved living in NYC, but it’s so depressing to keep reading that they keep locking it down MORE.

marisacat - 17 April 2012

I can see street checkpoints, by which I mean regular, daily, manned and on-going, coming to NYC and STAYING, if there is one more big event. I wonder how many people in the US know about the checkpoints on some highway systems in the US, like what Tuston/Gangified would mention.

Our so called DUI check points are nothing more than sweeps for “illegals” and people, for whatever reason, without a valid license.

Somewhere today, too, I saw an article that a 6 year old was hand cuffed in Georgia… She may have had, from the description, an unholy temper tantrum but lordy. Handcuffed behind her back too.

Ther was a photo, she was at least mixed race, but hard to say what, first name Salecia, so perhaps a range of possibilities in the Latin world.

Since we now call people white when it suits the media/narrative, she could be anything.

ms_xeno - 18 April 2012

12. marisacat - 17 April 2012

hmmm

Once the trial resumed, Breivik boasted he had carried out “the most sophisticated and spectacular political attack committed in Europe since World War II.”

I wonder if that is accurate…. he – as a lone killer – did kill 77 in two assaults, the car bombing and then the attack on the island. He is a bona-fide annihilator.. but there were years in Europe of the PLO and the Red Brigades and so on. Hijacks, kidnappings, bombings…. to say nothing of attacks carried out in Italy, blamed on the Left and in actuality perpetrated by a hard core, US aligned right wing…

So, I wonder..

diane - 17 April 2012

Speaking of the “US,” stumbled onto this, near month old nooz, pre dawn, at the corrente hamster cage (see also).

Spent at least two hours to find out if it was really true that a UK “Travel Editor” (who hasn’t yet explained the detail of how he came upon the information and has not shared any data (possibly out of fear) if he, in fact, did research as to the: when; who/what; how; where; why; how many; how much$) was really the sole (at least the sole “google”able) journalist with main stream “creds” to reveal that the “US” has now successfully, with a peep of evident protest, demanded personal details, within a mandatory 72 hours, of persons flying to its, The Americas™, “neighbors,” even when not crossing “US” “airspace,” despite the presumed legality issues of sovereignty. …….

Amazingly, I found tons of ‘blog’ links …yet all of them referred to that very same Travel Editor piece. No links whatsoever …. to any other “Main Stream” media, though I am sure the muckety mucks who rule the Fourth Estate are well aware of this. Yet another stunning violation of human rights …”crickets” isn’t even the phrase for that reality.

(gotta run will check back.)

i wish him luck sorting out Floridian shooting. If the huge blank spot persists, no witness to the moment of engagement, it will b a mystery forever, no matter how BOTH “sides” will work it.

Back in the early Oughties, 00s… the talk of America consolidating Canada and Mexico and the US were ignored. LOL Which they should NOT have been.

I don’t know what people think Northern Command NORCOM is, but it is the hegemony of the US over Canada US and Mexico.

Pity people did not get it.

diane - 17 April 2012

Yes, and at last look I made, it would seem the “US” is certainly in control (or closing in on control) of the entire electrical grid (which is still what “powers” all devices and toys, despite the cutsie WIFI!!!!! Satellites!!!!!) of, at the least, the North and Central Americas.

Raise the Minimum Wage

Here’s an unhappy observation about the minimum wage: Congress last increased the rate in stages in 2006, topping it out at $7.25 an hour in 2009, or $15,080 a year.

That amount, when adjusted for inflation, is actually lower than what a minimum-wage worker earned in 1968 and is too meager to offer anyone the chance to climb out of poverty, let alone afford basic goods and services.

The federal minimum wage was always meant to be a floor, not a ceiling. Today, someone earning the minimum would have to work 749 hours to afford one year of health insurance premiums and 923 hours to afford a year’s tuition at a public four-year college.

marisacat - 17 April 2012

Somebody made the suggestion just recently, with in a couple of months – – – – that if WalMart, Starbucks, McDonalds, Big Box Stores and the like, all raised their ordinary wages for regular workers, soemthing from 50 cents – a dollar an hour even, it would make a huge difference in the country.

I noticed it sank without a trace…

BTW in the French elections, all sides are advocating raising their minimum wages (sure sure the ooze of populism as voting gets closer, but still! compared to here!!)

Madman in the Marketplace - 17 April 2012

gawd forfend people make a living wage …

ms_xeno - 18 April 2012

I can definitely vouch personally for the idea that raises to ordinary people get pumped into the economy more or less the instant they’re in hand. My lavish $144 a week from Unemployment, for instance? Just got it two hours ago and by the time the clock strikes four pm it’ll pretty much be a faded memory. Gas, food, credit cards, some food for the four-footed beasts… The end, until next Wednesday.

marisacat - 18 April 2012

me too… I landed on a dismissive comment from someone in the LIBERAL OBAMA WH (I think it was that asshole Burton) about the 250.00 that was sent to SS and Disability recipients in 2009 in lieu of the CPI rise…. that

it was just used anyway for new TVs

YES that is indeed what I used mine for!!!! I could buy a little better new digital TV than i might have (since I had to buy one or go back to monthly cable) so I got one for $350, with a DVD player. And a tuner amplifier whatever that thing is, for 25.00

Snide bastards.

BTW, hardly trumpeted but cutting the “raise” out for SS cut 13 BILLION from the cash economy each year. Because of course, people spend it, immediately.

ms_xeno - 18 April 2012

Teh billionaires sit on the money they stole from you, then look down their noses at you for not sitting on whatever remaining pittance they haven’t yet gotten around to stealing.
