I have a wicked summer chest cold – I never get sick – and I feel like my whole system is just wiped out. In a few days I’ll have that “never felt better” feeling you get when you come around from such things… Right now, I think that feeling is gone for good in matters of consequence, though. I agree with madman when he says that it’s going to take a collapse to change things.

It is stomach turning, New Fake Name. And when Durbin brought it up on the floor of the Senate, the Dems allowed the Rightwing to brow-beat him into apologizing. We’ve talked about this before. But I do not remember any Dems going after anyone who smeared Durbin at that time. They should have been all over the media, slamming anyone who dared to defend torture. Obviously it is now established and public policy.
There was outrage over Paris Hilton getting out of jail last week. The media was in an uproar over it! On liberal blogs, nearly half the commenters were furious that she might go free. You would have thought she had tortured someone to death, or dropped a cluster-bomb on innocent civilians the national outrage was so intense. Maybe had those been her crimes, there would have been less outrage and she’d still be free. Anyway, the outrage worked, she’s back behind bars – we should all feel safer.
It astounds me that there is this kind of outrage over something so minor while the genocidal crimes and torture of this government barely register at all.
I never thought it could get this bad, even when I was afraid of what they might do. I really did think that if the crimes ever reached this level, someone would stop them.

I used to think that too. It was after Katrina that I realized we’re all on our own. John Stewart brought up an important point tonite. Bush was hugging crowds in Albania but we cant get close enought to ask him questions.
If you have seen the footage, something is very odd about him walking into the crowds from a security stand point, not just the fact we get hearded into free speach zones and Bush never leaves his SUV. I’m just a mess – physically and emotionally. Way too much stress. Vicious circle when dealing with pain.
I compose a lot to write, especially at bedtime. Some of the best things I’ve “written” were never actually written down. Too tired to get back up and write and then I just have fragments left the next day. I often have to meditate my way to sleep to shut my brain off.
I did have a glimmer of hope today (although hope is highly overrated) when I saw the news that Bushco took another legal blow in the case of indefinite detentions. Signs that the dictatorship is crumbling. But it could happen much more quickly if the Dems actually were a real opposition party that put the country first. So I know what you mean about the heartbreak, the cynicism and the disgust. It really is like living in an ongoing nightmare and it just doesn’t seem like Nov ’08 will suddenly bring an end to it, as much as some want to believe it will. There is too much entrenched corruption.
I think it is hilarious anyone cares about Mudcat. Seems much of this is jealousy of who propelled the wretch Webb forward.

But as you say, these people who populate the internet, troll-rating and attacking anyone who is not fully on board with the current Israeli government’s policies, are doing such harm that I sometimes wonder if they are really anti-semites themselves. Aside from the fact that people now laugh at the charge, so trivialized has it become, they are supporting policies that could not be more dangerous for Israelis.
Not to mention that this strange alliance between Christian Fundies and Rightwing Jews, is suspect. When the US has no further need of Israel they will drop them as quickly as they dropped Saddam Hussein. Israel would be well advised to make peace with its neighbors if possible, because one day, maybe sooner than they think, the US will have no more use for them and they will be left alone to deal with those neighbors.

Dk is a perfect example of an authoritarian society. It is a study in how easy it is to get some people to become abusers without much reward (unless anyone in their right mind considers being a fp there a reward). But it also separates those who have real strength and who refuse to be a part of it. It reminds me of that study where they tested people to see how far they would go when they feared not being accepted, to bully and even torture others. It was scary to see how far otherwise decent people were willing to go.
I could see some of them going along with anything, just to be part of a perceived ‘in crowd’. The good thing is though, it’s really just a relatively small group on dk who are the serial abusers, weak enough to go along with a system that is abhorrent to most decent people.
I thought it was very revealing how upset kos got about the media coverage of online abuse. He saw his little authoritarian system under attack, and he and his sychophants cannot imagine any way other than bullying to control the masses. And yet, it doesn’t work. He cannot control them which is why they are always whining about people like Marisacat and others who simply laugh at them.

Revisionist, I think we use Israel to help protect our oil interests in the ME. If there was no oil there, I doubt we would ever have had much interest in them. Most likely there would have been two states a long time ago, with the US enforcing it. But if our addiction to oil ends with new alternative energy, Israel will be on its own. We haven’t shown much loyalty to former allies in the past once our use for them is over.
Ms xeno, I was being a bit facetious, but their strategy is alienating people so in that sense they are doing more harm than good for Israel. Anyone who truly cares about the survival of Israel wants peace. I don’t think that’s impossible, but not as long as the neocons are in power here.

Which won’t bode well for the average Israeli even/especially if some Fundie theocracy gets the lion’s share of Ye Olde Empire’s weapons and so on.
