Just reading Froomkin… he has a piece up titled, How lame duck a president?…

I think he missed the boat:   After being unable to get a vote on a one line, non-binding to boot, no-confidence-thingaroo on Gonzales…

it’s the LAME DUCK GOVERNMENT.

Except… Bush still has the codes.

We are so screwed.

I Are The JURY !! And Judge. And executioner:

If the Islamic Republic of Iran is providing weapons or training to Iraqi insurgents, then, it should be made to pay a price and especially, if that price comes at little cost to the US. That the Iranians may have geopolitical concerns arising out of the US invasion of Iraq which prompts their actions is and ought be of no moment to the US.

A better question for Mr. Lieberman is whether the same should be our policy toward the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“ellen” as quoted at IOZ’s blog in the Lieberman thread.

Hillary, is that you ?

2. ms_xeno - 12 June 2007

“No cost to us,” my ass. But remember, as long as you’re just killing stupid little brown people standing between you and your oil, there’s no cost worth mentioning.

I’m in a time warp. Just substitute “Phillipines” for “Iran,” etc.

ARRGGH.

3. wozzle - 12 June 2007

MsX #1: Not Hillary; Hillary is not that nuanced.

Little cost to us? WTFS is “Ellen” ingesting?

4. supervixen - 12 June 2007

kestrel9000 must be in a manic phase. He emailed me last night chastising me about my last mention of him here, which was quite a while ago (he must be Googling his user ID) and now he has an especially dippy, abusive and rambling diary up at DK.

There should be a term for this type of manic, obsessive-compulsive narcissistic-grandiose post: perhaps Armandolalia.

5. supervixen - 12 June 2007

My ancient cat will have to be put to sleep soon. He can barely walk and I think he’s finally gone completely blind. I found him today staring at the floor, his feeble body contorted in a weird way. When I offered him water he couldn’t see the bowl. Aaarrgh. We have had him for 20 years…

6. Revisionist - 12 June 2007

Be sure and send dad Glenn Beck Boquet

Glenn Beck is one of America’s most popular radio and TV hosts. He’s also a big fan of ProFlowers, and has teamed up with our flower designers to offer you the custom Glenn Beck Bouquet. Glenn Beck himself chose these flowers and colors — a captivating collection of blue irises and white lilies and daisies —and worked closely with the ProFlowers team to create a bouquet perfect for saying “Thank you,” or to send “just because.”

7. cad - 12 June 2007

i’ll look for the beck bouquet ad on dk. even dems gotta eat!

and i am stunned that obama bypassed that gonzalez vote, he just lost whatever little support i was giving him. unbelievable. the silnce on this is deafening. huff loves obama, so don’t expect one of their crack hollywood politicos to bring this up. too much paris hilton news.

8. VAGreen - 12 June 2007

Supervixen,

Really sorry to hear about your cat. 20 years old! Sounds like he really had a full life.

My wife had two cats when we started our relationship in 2002. Archy was very friendly to practically all people, but Libby hid from nearly everyone. The only two people in the world that she really liked were my wife and me. My wife says that Libby knew we were getting married before we were. Last year, Libby’s liver started to give out, and in July we had to put her to sleep at the age of 16. I loved her. She was my kitty.

Gotta go. Archy and Dixie (our new cat) are demanding my attention, and I need at least one hand to type.

9. BooHooHooMan - 12 June 2007

SV # 5- I had no judgement one way or the other about the DJ from VA until he conflated guns in the home virtually as synonymous with ones manhood in protecting their family.

Anyone who makes a profession out of killing could take such a numbskull out with an acorn and a sling shot or by sending him a complimentary package of deer jerky.

That said (and go ahead and shoot me) I’ve come full circle on gun control. Let’s just build community arsenals instead of schools, vote to have people shot right off of American Idol ( maybe in the ass I don’t know) Low cost vending machines everywhere, gun kiosks throughout the malls to relieve the rampagers and panicked alike the hassle of carrying their heat.

Imagine the convenience of having these gun dispensers RIGHT IN in the liquor store, right in the banks.

Tie it in with tax policy. Tax credits for purchase and everyone who makes under 50 Grand with a five body count minimum gets to write off their ammo.

To the simpletons who think a divided populace armed willy nilly with guns are a crucial factor in the event of La Révolution, good luck against pissed off chemists and Trade School Educated machinists.

Besides, we need a legislative victory.
Something, anything to get our progressive agenda moving.

10. BooHooHooMan - 12 June 2007

Besides THAT* we need a legislative victory.

11. lucidculture - 12 June 2007

From the last thread:

She said her husband often teases her about the escape. “He says that if [U.S. troops] hadn’t rescued me, I’d be snaggletoothed and selling pencils on the streets of Saigon,” she said.

I don’t understand why she stays married to the man that says such horribly demeaning things about her. Jesus…

Sorry to hear about the kitty SV. I hope Baby’s ok as well Mcat.

And as for Kestrel SV… you remember the troll wars well – he blew a gasket long ago.

And MitM – no magic pills for me thank you… We’re doing dinner at a bistro on Thursday. She really does seem quite cool, though I googled her published papers on pubmed & while I can comprehend a lot of published science, from theoretical physics to medical research, the abstract from her latest paper went right over my head. Maybe I should read the whole paper before Thurs….

12. earth to meg - 12 June 2007

SV, kestrel9K reminds me of the sleazy side-show barkers at those old-timey traveling revivals, a combination of huckster/asshole/cretin. The company he’s keeping in that diary isn’t too impressive, either.

I love “Armandolalia!” 😀

13. BooHooHooMan - 12 June 2007

I meant SV #4 sorry.
This is America, though. Must I look before firing?

14. Sabrina Ballerina - 12 June 2007

This is America, though. Must I look before firing? Bhhm

Not in Florida, right? Don’t they have signs up warning tourists now about armed and angry Floridians? Or is that just an urban myth?

SV, sorry about your kitty. I wish animals had a longer life-span. How did the owl fight go, btw?

Speaking of dk – melvin put up this post in ‘honor of Miss D’ in the Saturday Night Losers’ Club or whatever they call it. I can’t view the video – so can’t say how it supposedly honors her.

Homage to Miss Devore

15. lucidculture - 12 June 2007

I remember some of those ice skating threads during the winter olympics of 2006 with Miss D… that was right around the time of the extremely public meltdown that caused me to delete all my diaries & unceremoniously leave for a couple of months.

16. Sabrina Ballerina - 12 June 2007

Cad, Obama, Todd and Biden – has anyone asked why they missed that vote yet? It’s just incredible how the minority party wins every major battle since Jan. 2007 but lost every battle until then.

VAGreen, (love the name. Is the reference to VA or to VAGs, or both? Lol! Whatever, I like it! Nice story about your kittly. I think cats are very intuitive. I used to think they were all alike until we ended up being adapted by them. We were more dog people until then. That little band of wild kitties taught me how wrong I was – they knew way more about us than we did about them. They had been studying our family for a long time. I feel flattered that they trusted us enough to bring their kittens here for protection.

17. NYCee - 12 June 2007

No, Sabrina, Florida’s ShootFirstLaw certainly isnt an urban myth. What’s more, news of it is being spread around the world as a warning. Just google and you will see articles about it in the Scotsman, the Independent/UK, etc. (I had posted about the Florida gunslinger warnings here on Sunday, with no time for links)

Here’s a snippet from the Independent/UK Holiday in Florida at Your Peril, Gun Control Group Warns:

It is one of the most popular destinations with Britons looking for sunshine and glamour, but tourists thinking of going to Florida are being warned off by a US gun-control group.

The Brady Campaign to Control Gun Violence, named for a Reagan aide who was shot in the head during an assassination attempt on his boss, has released a series of adverts telling would-be tourists they could be putting their lives at risk because of new laws which come into force today, allowing Floridians to shoot an attacker in the street and face only a minimal risk of prosecution.

The adverts will appear in British newspapers this weekend, highlighting new laws affecting the state’s six million gun owners. The ads read: “Thinking about a Florida vacation? Please ensure your family is safe. A new law in the Sunshine State authorises nervous or frightened residents to use deadly force.

“In Florida, avoid disputes. Use special caution in arguing with motorists on Florida roads. Police and prosecutors are concerned about the potential for unnecessary violence.” [… ]

Activists will also be handing out leaflets to Britons arriving at Miami and Orlando airports from next week, warning them to be cautious. About 1.5 million Britons visit Florida each year, attracted by its hot weather, coast and locations such as the Kennedy Space Centre and the theme parks in Orlando.

Sarah Brady, who heads the campaign, said: “We think people visiting Florida should be aware of this law, and act accordingly. Visitors should be very careful about getting into an aggressive argument with anyone during their stay.”

18. NYCee - 12 June 2007

Last post of mine got snagged, Marisa.

(Thanks in advance for fishin it out.)

19. ms_xeno - 12 June 2007

I’m jealous of all those in the Ejected class who are still collecting “tributes” and poison emails ages after the fact. I am very sad to report that none of my erstwhile enemies from the deceased Ms. Boards ever look me up to see how I’m doing. [sulk]

I don’t feel special. :p

20. NYCee - 12 June 2007

Sabrina – In case it takes Marisa a while to retrieve my snagged post, it was re the insane FL gun law, Shoot First, that you mentioned, and no, it is no urban myth, not about the law or the reaction from Brady, etc. In fact, Florida is becoming infamous for it, as the warnings about it are being picked up round the world.

This is one piece on it from the Independent. (Also in Scotsman, etc.)

Holiday in Florida at your peril, gun control group warns

21. NYCee - 12 June 2007

Well, second attempt failed too.

Ill try just the link. Check this out, sabrina. No urban myth.

22. lucidculture - 12 June 2007

Ms_X, maybe we should commiserate in our unpopularity… 😉

23. NYCee - 12 June 2007

Cats short lifespan. Too short, all too short.

My neighbor across the hall is a classic cat lover/rescuer (takes the total ‘street’ ones that can live in your apt for years without allowing human touch, she somehow gets them into carrier to a vet – despite the clawings and mayhem – when needed, etc and so on) She blurted out how unfair and off kilter it is that her horrid exboyfriends get to live so much longer than her cats.

sv – sorry to hear that. Had an older cat (not 20, though) wind down from old age. I didnt have him put to sleep, because he seemed to naturally fade out although it was a rather long process of greying, thinning, finicky eating. He didnt have an identified serious diseasae and didnt seem to be in pain. There was an episode on “winding down” into death on Northern Exposure that was great – a real keeper from that series.

* NE-Sen: A Kerrey/Bruning ticket in Nebraska’s Senate race? Could happen. I see Kerrey, and I think, “Oh no, another Lieberman.” (They’re big buds, btw.) But others say that outside of Iraq (where he’s delusional), he’s a good Democrat.

Remember, the issue isn’t whether Kerrey is to the right of the party. We’re talking Nebraska here. Of course he’d have to be to the right of the Democratic Party. The issue is whether he’d become the go-to guy when the media needs a Democrat to criticize other Democrats and the Democratic Party. Ben Nelson, as right-wing as he might be, has never taken that role, and for that he earns my respect. His votes may be infuriating, but he’s representing his overwhelmingly conservative state and doing so without rubbing his party’s nose in it.

So the question is whether Kerrey would be a Nelson-style Democrat, or a Lieberman-style “Democrat”. That’s a question we’ll have to explore in greater detail of Kerrey does, indeed, enter the race.

Today CYA candidate:

Finally, this is the kind of race that should really get anyone looking for a better Democratic Party excited. In many districts, the Democratic candidate may be imperfect, but the lesser of two evils compared to the Republican neanderthals they usually oppose. Yet here is a race where we really have the ability to make our party a far better one. We can get replace of one of those Democrats who undermine us from within while working for right-wing causes, with a true people-powered community activist and bona fide progressive. And given the extreme Democratic tilt of this district, the primary is the only race that matter

I think this is the first progressive in four years Kos has promoted. Which is most likly a CYA candidate for the long string of right wing non progressive candidates he will promote…. starting with SPARKS who is anti choice.

Have you notice that it is only acceptable to the Boyz to promote pro choice candidates if it covers a multitude of sins like Kerrey’s signed confession and active membership in PNAC. Suddenly, it is okay for a pro choice candidate in Nebraska…. but still out of the question to run a pro choice candidate again Nelson… go figure.

If Hitler was a Dem and running in Alabama … it would be okay with the Boyz as long as he has a D behind his name… and they would sell him as a progressive because he was pro choice. However, it is NEVER okay for the Boyz to support a true progressive if a conservative is in the race.... therefore… upholding the conservative right wing agenda within the Democratic Party.

Earth To Meg, I couldn’t agree more regarding Kestral9000. What a thug he is! He’s certainly working hard to help Republicans get Ron Paul out of the debates!

As for the charge of ‘racism’? I would think he would have reserved his ‘outrage’ for Rudolph Giuliani, the Republican Candidate who actually does have a chance of winning the nomination, and who FULLY SUPPORTS the war, . Rudolph Giuliani has a far more documented history of racism than what I saw in Kestral’s so-called ‘proof’ re Paul.

His fury over Ron Paul is a little suspect, imo. Nothing would suit the Right better than to get Ron Paul out of the debates. Whatever happened to ‘political pragmatism’?

His lack of fury over Giuliani and some of the other Repubs is also remarkable considering that Ron Paul’s only real value in this race is that he is a threat to them. To pretend that he has a chance of winning the nomination is simply a lie Something is not quite right about this. Either he is politically ignorant and stupid, or he’s doing working for the other side.

A Republican Nader. (3+ / 0-)

There’s something seriously wrong with this guy. I don’t know his history, but I will never, ever listen to anyone who attempts to bully another poster making a perfectly reasonable statement on a so-called political discussion board by flinging a charge of ‘racism’ at them.

He’s working way too hard at smearing, not only Paul, but anyone who even suggests that having him the race might be good for ‘gasp’ DEMOCRATS! I absolutely despise bullies. I will do my own research on Ron Paul, maybe even call his office, since several of my Repub friends DO intend to vote for him. Making Kestral wrong, btw. Repubs disgusted with Bush and the war have no where else to go. What an idiot to claim that he knows what Republican voters will do.

Why are so-called ‘Democrats’ so scared of Ron Paul? I can see why Republicans are! I also see our SockPuppet Diarist slamming ‘single issue’ voters! That old meme again. Only this time it’s the WAR he’s talking about! The issue that now 77% of the American people are against. Who are these people? Are they just dumb, or is it something else?

It’s chilling to see this kind of blatant thuggery hit the Rec list. There is a better way to make a point if it is legitimate. I’m not impressed with his ‘proof’. Wonder if he knows that Phelps used to be a Gore supporter, eg? And a Democrat. Check it out:

Phelps/Gore/Google

He’s inviting the right to bring this up again – does that mean that Gore is a homophobe? Maybe Kestrel has the answer.

NYCee

sorry! Just let two of yours out of Spam!

27. NYCee - 12 June 2007

Ugh – Kerrey is horrendous. I remember being in an elevator where I was working, during the lead up to Iraq war, and a bunch of New School students came in very animated, laughing about how they had just all shouted him down at some meeting. Excuse the pun, but they found him LAME. He was such a weird choice for the New School: Vietnam – nasty judgement/acts; Iraq – nasty judgment… he appears unstrung when he starts pontificating, too. A fricking hawknut.

I love this ideaR, perpetuated by many at Kos, etc, that Ben Nelson (any Brand X Nebraskan rep) simply cant be expected to TRY to sell a little progressive sanity to Nebraskans. He is so fucking consistently nasty in his votes, RW hardcore nasty, it is obvious it comes naturally to him to act like the worst of them. He isnt just molding around his legions of warped constituents out of necessity, he is gladly marching in step with them, and often voting in ways in which they have probably applied absolutely NO pressure, and could, in fact, be just as easily persuaded to vote against the RW agenda as for it. But just the image of them thar people, pitchforks raised, is thrown out again and again as cover for him to vote as he does. And to negate the mere thought that the progressive case could ever be made to those people.

There is nothing to consider about Kerrey or applaud about Nelson (oh, he votes like a RW shit but he keeps mum… clap clap clap!!! roses! sweets!), yet there Kos goes, doing it again…

Shameful stains on the party.

Btw, wrong spelling on ‘kestrel’ in my above post, not that it matters much but just for the record.

35. ms_xeno - 12 June 2007

lucid, what can I say ? In a delicious bit of irony, the final blow-up that culminated in my being ejected from Feminist Eden was another regular’s use of an Anti-Semitic slur, with all her buddies rushing in to defend her because wasn’t this a feminist board and weren’t we all women first ? [snort]

I mention this only so people remember that stupid on stilts existed before Kos, and will exist long after Kos is only an embarassing memory.

36. ms_xeno - 12 June 2007

SB: Why are so-called ‘Democrats’ so scared of Ron Paul?

Hacks in the duopoly are scared of anyone who might increase voter turnout. I’m guessing that’s the real fear, as it was against Nader. Seven years of having to shovel through this bullshit have convinced me that both parties are terrified of a new, unpredictable mass of voters entering the system, despite the promise of new money and an actual mandate. They are terrified on any unknown quantity, because they fear they can neither predict nor control it.

but I couldn’t begin to imagine a life without you…

well, I guess I should leave, I said
I don’t want any scenes

no, I’ll pay my own check, thanks
yes, of course I am hurt
no, don’t try to console me

” another regular’s use of an Anti-Semitic slur, with all her buddies rushing in to defend her ”

I’m sure the irony is not lost on anyone here “bitch, cunt, whore” seems to ring a bell…

Most only care about bigotry language when it suits their purpose. I think that’s why I’m usually on the ‘language reclamation’ side of debates about language.

42. BooHooHooMan - 12 June 2007

There is a whole thing in Paul’s background tying him also into ancient Pittsburgh RW Industrial Money. His Brother, IIRC, was a major architect behind the lucrative hijacking of the huge University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, a move that has gone on in many of the country’s University Medical Centers.

Publicize Health Care Investment – Privatize the Enormous Profits.
Huge NIH Grants and drug trial co- ventures with the University Centers, major payola to the key management/lobbyist/consultant class behind the scenes.

Though not a blue blood himself, Paul might as well have been genetically engineered to do their bidding. You have to ask yourself–Why haven’t they taken him down thus far?

43. ms_xeno - 12 June 2007

lucid, when it comes to language, I usually invoke the “sacred-right-to-mock-my-own, hands-off-the-rest” clause. With the exception of a few spectacular blow-ups, it’s served me pretty well over the years IRL. The interent is dicier, because we’re all brains in jars, etc…

44. ms_xeno - 12 June 2007

47. Revisionist - 12 June 2007

RE PAUL:

That post semed more like a smear. I could do the same thing will Clinton. Lots of lovely photos of her in the white house with columbian drug lords. First of all, Paul’s attraction is not a “single issue”. It isnt just the war. He has several issues that are in line with where many people are at. Some of his more spartan policies would NEVER make it thru congress. Social Security would not be eliminated.

Maybe the truth is that Paul is not on his knees sucking Israeli cock and you they cant have a candidate out there who isnt.

48. lucidculture - 12 June 2007

“The interent is dicier, because we’re all brains in jars, etc…”

That’s why I tend to be pretty careful about my language on the internet. One can’t see the ironic gesture someone might be making while using a slur & one never knows who will be offended by what and why. Cursing is one thing, honestly if someone can’t handle the word “fuck” I don’t have much use for them, but ironic use of charged language can be pretty tough to pull off on a screen.

49. Sabrina Ballerina - 12 June 2007

Aw lucid, it’s because we care … and you know our reputation for investigating people’s personal lives doncha? What made you think you’d be exempt, just because you’re a Vag? Lol! So, if you see a sexy (had to get in so you’d know how fab we are) all girl band that really rocks, in the bistro, just act as if you don’t know who we are! We will NOT embarrass you!

Ms xeno, love that song …. lol! does the sandwich have any significance re current relationships, btw?

As for getting nasty emails and bad publicity, I did get some on the rightwing board I started out on, long after I left. Went back to check on them once, and they were making lists of their favorited ‘lefties’. I was surprised to find that I made #1 on the list because they said ‘she was wrong about everything, but she was just naive, not nasty like some of the other pinko commies. She was a complete dim-wit in terms of learning anything!’

Lol, the comments were hilarious! It brought tears to my eyes! They liked me! Who would have thought! Rotfl! I wish you could have seen the nasty posts I got for two years or more from them, along with the deaththreats, etc. which were par for the course back then. Haven’t checked back since then. Being at the top of a rabid rightwing ‘favorite pinko commie’ list isn’t really something to boast about! Just remembering the wild west it was when I first went online …

50. lucidculture - 12 June 2007

SB – I googled myself today for the hell of it & came across all of the epic wars I had with wingers from roughly 2000 – 2002 on the old BBS alt.politics boards. I’d almost forgotten. Of course, it’s all under my real name too. I never got any death threats, but there were certainly enough insults to go around. I was going through one thread about how ‘fascism’ is a ‘leftist’ ideology. ROTFLMAO And of course any actual articles on fascism I linked to were immediately discarded as ‘leftist’ propaganda.

I used to hang out in Freeperville too just to keep an eye on folks – cause I knew some of the folks I debated on the BBS’s were freepers.

And yes – I thought all VAG’s got an exemption from public humiliation. 😉

Do you read who’s dead in the Irish Post
Do you give away the cash you can’t afford
On bended knees and pray to lord

A savior he is not. Interesting yes, but a foil nonetheless appropo of a guy heavily invested precious metals. The GOP will use him Big Tent fashion like the Log Cabin Republicans then ram him back in the closet when he’s suited their purpose. The politics will cut in a number of ways , between what is for real and what is not but until I see a contender call for immediate defunding of all military and economic aid to Israel and the PA in advance of a Two State Solution it’s all talk.

Uh sorry no. I STILL suspect some deal between machines in NC that he ever got in. Then, god knows, did nothing. And did not even win his home district.

Ya gotta hve something real. Some little thing. However little…

56. Revisionist - 12 June 2007

lol @ 52… yes..he wants to abolish the fed. But thats one of the things I support as well. Kennedy might have done it in his second had he lived. I dont necessarly want us to fill Fort Knox with billions of tons of gold but it would be nice if our money was backed by something. I read an article last about inflation and how with a gold standard gas would still be 25 cents.

Thats one of the joys of being old. Remember when you were a kid and could just bike (lol.. we were actually let outside the house) around and find a couple of empty Dr Pepper bottles, take them to a convience store and turn that dime into handfuls of candy.

57. marisacat - 12 June 2007

Trying to take my mind off things here. AT&T is offering an amazing deal on DSL and digital TV w/ packages (thru June).

The DLS is Yahoo, does anyone have any experience with that?

58. BooHooHooMan - 12 June 2007

Mousse. Real American made Mousse. On Edwards hair.
Tie M1 to it. @ 400 bucks an ounce, either that or Maui Wowie.

59. Revisionist - 12 June 2007

I have that…..

Is it satelite or cable? Digital cable IS NOT WORTH the money. Its just more expensive cable

They offer a deal on the DSL but you have to renew it every year. I have the high end and its supposed to be $24 a month. I forgot to renew and have been paying 41 for the past few months. Its supposed to change but they say it will take 2-3 months for it to kick in. The bills are hard to read because they charge you full price for everythingt hen give you a discount.

The drawback is you are late they turn off the TV then internet a few days later but will leave the phone on,. Like today I couldnt get email because my “account has been suspended”. The bill was due last friday.

They are also a bitch to deal with. You’ll have to deal with 5 different people everytime. One section (phone/net/tv) has no idea what the other is doing. For instance if they issue a disconnect for something to be turned off but you pay the bill the disconnect often goes thru if you dont call and follow up you cant lose service anyway. I;m always late and lose the TV every couple od months. I dont watch it everday so i dont notice for days.

I have the sat TV. silver package I believe. its like 40 bucks. sound and picture great. good selection of channels. DVR is cheaper than other systems.

My DSL is excellent. Its fast and Im always connected. I just dont use any of the Yahoo crap except a legacy email i’ve had for 10 years.

60. marisacat - 12 June 2007

He shoulda read the IED, esp as a co-sponsor. It all just falls apart.

61. Revisionist - 12 June 2007

if they are offering you the fiber optic stuff it does require them to rewire your entire house

62. marisacat - 12 June 2007

Revisionist

Well thsi is AT&T/SBC my phone lines are thru them. Right now the package is for DSL and digital for up to 3 tvs, the DVR box is free (well, you know, you pay for it in the package).

The service is brand new – the first installations for AT&T people ws in December, in just a few cities in the US, tho 6 or 7 of them are here in the Bay Area. Later the phone will be part of the package.

Comcast got too expensive for regular cable and AOL got progressively worse over the past two years. Time to move on.

Thanks.

63. marisacat - 12 June 2007

Revisionist…

yes think it is fiber optic. You sign off on agreeing to whatever it is they have to do – installation is 50.00 with some sort of VisA promotion worth 50.00 (whatever!). I have not bought anything yet… 😉

This is an old house, just getting cable installed (it came very late to this neighborhood, 10 years after I had it in a different neighborhood) was a HORROR.

64. Revisionist - 12 June 2007

man the BBBs cant let MUdcat rest

Also just saw a blurbe we are about to send air strikes into somalia

65. lucidculture - 12 June 2007

Mcat – I would say digital cable is worth it for a couple of reasons – 1. you get Sundance and IFC [both excellent channels]. 2. if you get a premium like HBO, you get 7 flavors of it, not just one. 3. There a a host of other misc. channels you get which, if you’re vegging out, are sometimes entertaining.

Revisionist – I actually support that as well, I was just joking about the apparent ‘conflict of interest’ there. The fed is directly responsible for the insane inflation that this county has had, which no one ever seems to notice because the cost of gizmo’s goes down. Meanwhile staples like food, energy costs and housing are through he roof. I read some really long article once detailing the problems caused by a Fed system from the standpoint of various principles of physics – it was fascinating. Basically it come down to the fact that a private fed system is stealing money from everyone.

66. marisacat - 12 June 2007

This has 30 channels of Showtime and 18 channels of HBO and Cinemax. That is the top of the line package. I intend to get the level, at least, that includes IFC, C-Span 3, and CNN Internati/ onal – and at that level it includes Showtime The Movie Channel..

I did have digital cable for a few years but think I went back to plain cable in 02.

This package is little more than I pay now for Comcast cable and AOL.

67. marisacat - 12 June 2007

the private fed system is a scam. Started out as one…

68. cad - 12 June 2007

i myself use foil and rabbit ears. of course, i get one channel.

69. Revisionist - 12 June 2007

AOL — gasp. My DSL is SBC legacy. I was an intial subscriber and its just gone from bell to sbc to yahoo to att. only thing that changed was the modem has been updated a couple of times. i need a new one but they want to charge me $70! i can just get one on new egg.

My mom got sucked into to verizon offering the same services. wasnt right for her. i told her to let me handle it but she still thinks im 12. they dug up her yard and ran all kinds of cables (not very pretty) and she had a routers and crap in the garage. she has never been at a computer so i cant assess the inetrnet service but everything else appeared no different than normal phone and TV.

They are pushing me to get all that. HARD. thats a red flag for me. unless you have an HD TV the TV part isnt really worth it. I wouldnt get anything else I am not getting thru the dish service.and i really dont need anymore internet speed.

I am supposed to get all these “savings” with the bundle but in reality its only about $4 a month. and like I say you have to call when the inro price is up and renogiate or they just up it to the highest tier.

70. marisacat - 12 June 2007

Well when I needed to move something and unscrewed the cable line from the TV in the bedroom (which I had thought was dying of old age) THE PICTURE IMPROVED.

That sort of clinched it… time to depart Comcast cable.

Don’t you think the “elite” phrase is a tag that isn’t all that warrented. It sets up another division that has a lot of baggage and assumptions. Rather than imply connections with corporations, I think it seeks to exploit class tensions. Educated people think they are better than others, waste time on meaningless research, expose your kids to loopy left wing thinking in college, don’t do real work, waste money at Starbucks and drink latte, windsurf as opposed to cutting wood etc……

lol… digital cable isnt really digitial. satellite service is far superior. Maybe its because I;m a guy and have all the electronic toys but I can tell the difference in picture quality but most importanly sound. I have had both DISH and Direct. only real differnce I noticed was the UI for the box. digicable looks and sounds like normal cable. only diffence is the updated box that allows for ppv.

My mom ended up going back to comcast and has basic cable now. all she watches are soaps and Lifetime.

73. marisacat - 12 June 2007

Well I pay 60 for cable and 24.00 for AOL… and this new promotion thru yes bell, morphing to ATT and then SBC now ATT/SBC is packages for 74, 94 or the top for 119.00. Even the 74 dollar package would be much more than I have now, on all fronts. For less cash outlay.

I am on Dial up now, so DSL will be faster no matter what.

A really great piece, by Bernard S. Cohen, the lawyer who pursued Loving v VA, and Evan Wolfson, who was co-counsel on Baehr v. Lewin, the groundbreaking Hawaii challenge on behalf of same-sex couples seeking to marry.

When the U.S. Supreme Court got Loving right, the polls showed 70 percent still opposed to interracial marriage. Imagine the injury to our nation if the Court had flinched, or if the opposition had prevailed with arguments like “let the people vote” or attacks on “activist judges,” and had cemented discrimination into our Constitution, as in Hawaii.

Last year, the NAACP LDF filed a brief in support of ending the different-sex restriction on marriage. The NAACP LDF invoked Loving’s repudiation of the same-race restriction on marriage, stating, “In a step forward – a step that at the time was the subject of bitter controversy, but now seems obvious – the Supreme Court tore down this lasting and notorious vestige of discrimination[.] There is no reason… to treat marriage between persons of the same sex any differently.”

Today we rightly celebrate Loving v. Virginia as a milestone in racial equality, an important vindication of marriage as a cherished civil right, and a testament to the importance of fighting for equality, rather than sitting by silently, indifferently, or complacently in the face of cruel exclusion.

When in 1948 the California Supreme Court became the first in the country to strike down race discrimination in marriage — before Loving — it declared, “the essence of the right to marry is freedom to join in marriage with the person of one’s choice.” Hopefully, legislators and judges will find their courage, and our nation won’t need too many lawyers working too much longer on behalf of too many couples and their kids before we end ongoing marriage discrimination — the best way to celebrate the anniversary of what Loving is really all about.

Barbara Ehrenreich:

Well, there is a problem with the super-rich, several of them in fact. A bloated overclass can drag down a society as surely as a swelling underclass.

First, the Clemens example distracts from the reality that a great deal of the wealth at the top is built on the low-wage labor of the poor. Take Wal-Mart, our largest private employer and premiere exploiter of the working class: Every year, 4 or 5 of the people on Forbes magazine’s list of the ten richest Americans carry the surname Walton, meaning they are the children, nieces, and nephews of Wal-Mart’s founder. You think it’s a coincidence that this union-busting low-wage retail empire happens to have generated a $200 billion family fortune?

Second, though a lot of today’s wealth is being made in the financial industry, by means that are occult to the average citizen and do not seem to involve much labor of any kind, we all pay a price, somewhere down the line. All those late fees, puffed up interest rates and exorbitant charges for low-balance checking accounts do not, as far as I can determine, go to soup kitchens.

Third, the overclass bids up the price of goods that ordinary people also need — housing, for example. Gentrification is dispersing the urban poor into overcrowded suburban ranch houses, while billionaires’ horse farms displace the rural poor and middle class. Similarly, the rich can swallow tuitions of $40,000 and up, making a college education increasingly a privilege of the upper classes.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the huge concentration of wealth at the top is routinely used to tilt the political process in favor of the wealthy. Yes, we should acknowledge the philanthropic efforts of exceptional billionaires like George Soros and Bill Gates. But if we don’t end up with universal health insurance in the next few years, it won’t be because the average American isn’t pining for relief from escalating medical costs. It may well turn out to be because Hillary Clinton is, as The Nation reports, “the number-one Congressional recipient of donations from the healthcare industry.” And who do you think demanded those Bush tax cuts for the wealthy — the AFL-CIO.

90. Madman in the Marketplace - 12 June 2007

While I shouldn’t stir it up again, Pharyngula just says it so well:

What Fish ignores is that these are entirely human sufferings, human strivings, human efforts to find meaning. He, like so many other apologists for religion, glosses over the origin of these fears and aspirations in our existence, and tries to justify it all in the terms of his imaginary deity. Why does the church expect us to praise a god? Because it’s all we can do “in the face of his omnipotence and omnipresence.” Why did god condemn all of his creation and all of their descendants to sin and suffering for the trivial offense of eating a forbidden fruit? Because if it wasn’t a trivial infraction, it wouldn’t have been a test of obedience to the deity. How can a beneficent god allow the Holocaust to happen, and how can people retain their faith when confronted with overwhelming evil? Because it is all our fault, our own polluting sin and corruption. In every case, Fish elides over the human consequences and the human struggle and instead digs up an etiolated theological excuse, some thin anodyne from the facile world of the priests to build a case for the entirely imaginary workings of an invisible and impotent cosmic mind; an excuse for that loving all-powerful agent to do nothing at all, to keep his postulated power indiscernible.

What we atheists are saying is that we need to turn away from those powerless rationalizations, no matter how poetic they might be, and recognize that their power and their appeal flows from their humanity, not their religiosity. Forget god, that empty hulk, that great vacuum that humanity has stocked with its fears and dreams, and look at what we have created and felt instead. When someone weeps over a dead child or creates a great poem, it should matter not at all what some priest imagines his pantheon is doing. Take your eyes off your hallucination of heaven—what’s real are that woman’s tears, that child’s triumph, that grain of sand, that bird on wing. The meaning is derived from the reality of what we see and feel, not some convoluted vapor and self-serving puffery about an abstract concept like “god”.

She cannot make her point about HPV anything nearly as effectively without those images. I am glad she posted them, because I had no idea how devastating this is.

Of course no one “wants to see” pictures of disease anymore than they “want” to see pictures of dead and maimed children in Iraq. But we need to face the facts about the consequences of our country’s steady march backwards so that we understand how important this issue of fact-based education and access to contraception is. It is NOT something that should be the subject of political compromise.

If you can’t deal with the pictures, turn away.

Miss X – to be fair to Ehrenreich, she did devote a lot of time around 1994 to promoting the New Party – which successfully won local seats in many of the locales where they existed. Unfortunately, the Party fell apart when the SCOTUS ruled that state election laws disallowing fusion voting were not unconstitutional in 1996.

MitM, while I agree fully with the assessment in your quote about religion, I really do think that it is imperative for people to study ‘sacred’ texts from historical and philosophical perspectives, as they have had a huge impact on the development of enlightenment humanism, democracy, etc., etc.

In my master’s thesis I argued that the fundamental itdeas present in Greek religion directly led to the 5th Athenian democracy, precisely because the vision of justice and social order found within the texts could only be realized in democracy. Further – as we see with the Prometheus myths – the gifts given by the gods to humanity were precisely the gifts by which humanity could then disavow the gods. The Jesus myth drew heavily on the Greeks and incorporates many of the same ideas present in both the Prometheus and Dionysios myths. And the idea of the divine made human is precisely the model for Kantian universalism…

Don’t want to bore you – it’s just something to consider. While I have little patience for ‘faith’, it’s gorey history & the socio-politcal idocy it has wrought, I have an abiding fascination with the texts upon which that ‘faith’ is based – and they have deeply influenced the historical development of all humanity.

1994 was a long time ago, lucid. She can dine out on that if she likes, but I’m no more impressed than I am whenever Lieberman trots out his oh-so-dusty Civil Rights credentials.

They get it. We get that they get it. But in the end their laments mean nothing if we can’t at least count on them to sign the sort of pledge that’s linked to SMBIVA, and eschew any votes for pro-war candidates in ANY party. Shit, Barbara. Stay the hell home if Greens make you break out in a rash. But STOP voting for these assholes, already and stop harranguing those of us who have already gone off-road, and tried to STAY OFF !! You’re driving me out of my freaking skull with this political version of “My Man (I Love Him So)” !!

…I don’t know why I should
HillEdBama isn’t truuuuuuue
S/he beats us, too
But what can we dooooooooooooo…

I think the original version was penned by (or for) Fanny Brice and a gangster she was in love with. So appropriate, when you think about it.

It’s nice they get paid to let off steam so articulately, but aside from shoring up their book and speaking gigs, I gotta’ ask: To what end ?

113. ms_xeno - 12 June 2007

lucid, I don’t know anything about philosophy, but I get a little thrill when I hear Mahalia Jackson or Dean Bowman singing gospel songs. D’you think Madman will let us keep our badges after such shameful, er… confessions ? 😉

114. bayprairie - 12 June 2007

jiacinto’s “delicate sensibility” reminds me of barabara bush’s.

“Why should we hear about body bags and deaths,” Barbara Bush said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” on March 18, 2003. “Oh, I mean, it’s not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?”

compassionate birds of a feather

115. lucidculture - 12 June 2007

Well, given MitM’s penchant for country, I can’t imagine that he doesn’t love the Carter family, and for that matter Johnny Cash, so I think we’re safe on that front.

And yeah – I agree that what passes for the ‘left’ intelligensia are more just profiting from liberal platitudes than anything else, but at least Cornell West [another New Partier] has completely broken from the Donks. Barbara – well…

About the old kitties: I was about to report my worries about Walter (16 years, more or less) and how he’s “forgotten” where the box is a time or two this week. Of course he just tore down the hall chasing a moth as I was typing this.

I wonder how much it would cost to have a giant plastic shell put over all the hardwood floors for the next five or six years ? (groan)

But you gotta’ love those kitties, no matter the age.

Bush is the best thing that ever happened to the Democrats – since Nixon and before that assassination (martyrdom) and before that FDR and the New Deal.

They never ever in modern politics post Civil Rights have stood up, not even reluctantly. And yes the 60s and 70s was all about deals and sell outs. We have Malcolm’s speech that tells the truth of the March on Washington. And we have Martin’s Riverside Church speech that tells us NOTHING HAS CHANGED. From then to now.

The problem is MOST people still see the lesser evil as viable.

I am with Oriana Falacci… to vote either Prodi or Berlusconi was to sneeze on herself. or words to that effect.

It is very hard to get people to that point.

118. Miss Devore - 12 June 2007

I’ve been reading Pelton’s book on mercenaries. And then it occurs to me that I am reading stuff about a world where women are never present.

He recounts a common saying of some mercenaries with their “signature” styles. CDT=Chicks Dig This. In your imagination, of course.

For all the lovely men in the world I know (I have vaguely determined that overall population to equal 35% of the xy crew) this testosterone poisoning has got to end. There is enough knowledge and resources on the planet to alleviate so much suffering, and though I hate to come to such seemingly simplistic analysis, I do see a lot of weenie-waving substituting for addressing problems as if one had a brain.

119. liberalcatnip - 12 June 2007

aren’t the Escapades a national treasure up there in the Great White North?

No. No. That’s the “Ice Capades”. I’m kind of glad people have learned about Canadians from Bob & Doug. It lowers peoples’ expectations of us. 😉

catnip–I never thought of you as cranky!

Uber cranky sometimes. I usually wait for the blood to dry after I’ve banged my head against the wall before I post something.

😦 Keeping them there is even harder, Mcat. Ehrenreich being a prime example.

Must collapse now. You and Baby and the rest have a good night. =^..^=

Yeah yeah, some of you will be annoyed at my promotion of one of my projects, but I’m psyched as heck about the new launch of our SB Nation HQ site. With blogs for over 110 teams and sports, many of your favorite teams are well represented. If you’re into sports, you should definitely check it out.

Who the fuck says “psyched as heck” who isn’t pandering to morons?

Good question as to why Jiacinto is still allowed to troll dk. Although I think it’s fairly obvious. He was in another diary on defunding the war, using rightwing talking points, like ‘the American people wouldn’t be in favor of the McGovernick philosophy’ something he does regularly. I thought bashing Democrats, especially War Heroes (don’t they love war heroes on that site) was a no-no there?

Miss D. I haven’t listened to the radio interview yet … I do agree with him on the war and the Dems capitulation. Actually it’s complicity rather than capitulation, so maybe I don’t agree ….

Btw, did you see Melvin’s ‘homage to Miss Devore’ which I think I posted in this thread somewhere near the top? Lol!

They are going wild over Ron Paul, really off the charts with the abuse of anyone who even asks a question about him. Reminds me of the Cynthia McKinney viciousness. Someone really, really is afraid of letting Paul (and soon they’ll be smearing Kucinich and Gravel) in the debates. Same crowd, clonecone and it’s gang.

The troll patrol is gearing up and is nastier than ever. They’ve decided to crack down now after a letting people vent for a while As if that’s going to work. They have zero control over who people will support. They will be overrun this time by Real Life people who haven’t a clue what a blog is, but want this war over. Can’t troll-rate over 70% of the American people.

123. liberalcatnip - 12 June 2007

Mudcat fallout. For a guy that I’ve never heard about, I am strangely fascinated. Chris Bowers called Mudcat’s post a “post for the ages”. lol Oh yes, that will no doubt be inscribed in stone somewhere for the following generations to behold and mock. Why does Bowers seem to have an inflated sense of….well…everything?

124. Miss Devore - 12 June 2007

SB-I saw melvin’s homage. He’s always been a buddy and a distinct adversary to dhinmi.

ron paul-right on the war, wrong on so much other stuff. hagel is the same.

no one is really sounding the notes.

my personal project tonight seems to be biting off all fingernails so they will be equal at the starting point.

Is that Robert Pelton, Miss D? If so, he has a website where ‘travellers’ many of them mercenaries, come to chat.

I hate to say it, but some women do find these guys attractive. I hate even more to say that one of them is a friend of mine. She signed up at his site and spent hours flirting with guys who to me were pretty scary. She is a liberal btw. She used to call me to help respond to some of their posts to her. I got her in trouble because most of my responses were put downs and they really don’t like women putting them down. I never understood her fascination with them and told her so many times.

126. Miss Devore - 12 June 2007

Sabrina–I think I know more women who would be enchanted with BHHM than mercenaries. I guess I am lucky.

And with that miss d, I have a little piece I wrote last week on relationships that I thought was too revealing but I offer it here at the end of this thread. There is truth but no jest.. Anyways, I was going to post it as

Love Affairs Have Never Ended So Badly.

When my ex and I divorced, I felt profound sorrow and loss. It was a mutual choice, a recognition of things both present and absent in ourselves and our relationship that we came to feel apart. There was no one else, no infidelity that came between us. We have a beautiful daughter who was little when we divorced. We agreed to share custody of her and work around both of our extended families so she would have the opportunity to know quite the cast of characters, indeed. Any sadness we felt at having a “failed” marriage has been replaced tenfold with raising a great kid who has turned into an assertive, articulate young woman. I can say “we” given that my ex has expressed the same feeling, eventually married a decent guy and, going on ten+ years, they seem as happy as happy can be.

People are free to do what they want, sleep with whom they wish, of course. After all, it is truly a personal matter. Regardless of how I am, I figure however two (or more) people decide to structure their lives together that doesn’t involve deception, hurt or neglect of someone else, have at. “Cheating”, though in committed relationships is another matter as someone is hurt because someone is either disinformed or uninformed and thus less empowered in terms of decisions they might otherwise make for themselves. That said, I used to have as little patience, really, with friends or coworkers who bemoaned a cheating spouse or partner as I had disdain for the deceiver. I never really knew betrayal in such a personal “where you live” way. Money. Career. Sure, I’ve had my share of being stabbed in the back: All surface wounds though, barely piercing the synthetic could give a fuck shields one wears for survival at times in the workplace. But a real gutting of betrayal? A feeling that life -as- one- knows- it- is- over ? No, not on a personal level. Not until these last few years for me.

What the Fuck Does This Have to Do with Politics?

I’ll tell you. In a tenuous affair, uncommtted individuals can easily move on because it is soley a matter of personal preference or desire, no harm no foul, no one get’s hurt yada yada who wants to be a mechanical fuck, yada. No “other” anything or anyone to consider…

Political Party Affiliation by nature I think, is much more like a committed relationship. Or at least it should be. One Entered into with eyes wide open. I don’t believe in” toothpaste” issues. As long as ‘we’ are in a relationship, they are “our” issues, They are important for what they are and for “who” and “what” they represent. It comes down to mutual respect for each other. Much can be negotiated, but hardly anything can be ignored –especially in politics. Mutual Respect as a starting point certainly can not. Bullshitting someone (partisans/constituents) you say you care for is terrible and a relationship killer. Fucking up arrangements to care for a “mate” and those in your extended family (society as a whole) is intolerable. Ignoring the fallout from the consequences in favor of keeping the Party going at all costs is nothing short of dereliction in my view. If you want to fuck around with facists then get the fuck out. Of course they won’t. It’s definitely a bad breakup. We’re going to have to force them out of the House, stop paying for Uncle Harry from Nevada’s club membership, and stop subsidizing their trysts at the swingers “crash pad” on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. I’ve never had a Love affair that has ended so badly.
