Gibberish Bombast and Bullshit… [UPDATED: DMR final poll] 31 December 2007

… and it has given me a headache the size of Texas. Candidates, their handlers, political writers (almost all), self important “voters”, and the DC jellyfish brigade, too.
And still they ladle out the platitudes and promise us tended rose gardens. If we are “responsible”, watch our diet, buy their mandated health insurance fangle-dangle, don’t smoke (but be sure to drive alone on the caustic highways, there being little choice in the USA!!USA!! – and do ignore the trucks and the shipping and the exhaust… and don’t look too closely at the Rio Grande river, choking on the factory effluvia), if we do all of that AND there is no stray chocolate on our white cotton gloves, why, Hosanna Lord and Master, that tended rose garden will be very well tended.
Somehow or other. They all get vague… I read that Hillary now has her music start up loud at the end of her presentations (how are your white gloves doing, lady?) so there can be no Q&A, Edwards cut off questions following an inconvenient one about that 527 (as if it matters, no clean white gloves anywhere in Iowa) and Obama, well, catch him now or, Michelle says, it’s over for them. They know Target, so they know us.
One is hope one is change one is the fervent warrior. Change used to be Hope, Hope used to be Unity and Colorblind and, god help us, the Warrrior used to be both Hope and Help.
Hogwash with a pigshit back.
I did get some amusement out of this, NeoCon Lite Peter Galbraith gets his head and his ass handed back to him, in the thread to his Pakistan comment in the Guardian. What a fucking loon. Another guzzler of hogwash, smeared in pigshit, ready to sell us into war.
Here, have a rose. It smells a lot better than the stench out of Iowa.

UPDATE, 7:16 pm
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has widened his lead in Iowa over Hillary Clinton and John Edwards heading into Thursday’s nominating caucuses, according to The Des Moines Register’s final Iowa Poll before the 2008 nominating contests.
Obama’s rise is the result in part of a dramatic influx of first-time caucusgoers, including a sizable bloc of political independents. Both groups prefer the Illinois senator in what has been a very competitive campaign.
::snip::
The poll reflects continued fluidity in the race even as the end of the yearlong campaign nears. Roughly a third of likely caucusgoers say they could be persuaded to choose someone else before Thursday evening. Six percent were undecided or uncommitted.
The poll also reveals a widening gap between the three-way contest for the lead and the remaining candidates. No other Democrat received support from more than 6 percent of likely caucusgoers.
The findings mark the largest lead of any of the Democratic candidates in the Register’s poll all year, underscoring what has been a hard-fought battle among the three well-organized Iowa frontrunners.
It is also the only recent poll of Iowa caucusgoers showing Obama with a lead larger than the survey’s margin of sampling error, which is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
The telephone survey of 800 likely Democratic caucusgoers was taken Dec. 27-30. ::snip::

UPDATE, 3:16 pm
The world outside Iowahhhh:
TimesOnline has an article up on the protests the past few days in Kenya.. with a javascript pop-up of photos…
A mob has torched a church sheltering hundreds of Kenyans fleeing election violence, killing at least 50 people, many of them children, as the country’s disputed presidential election set off a bloody convulsion threatening what had been East Africa’s most stable and prosperous democracy.
Four days of rioting has killed at least 228 people, and 70,000 have been displaced in western Kenya by the post-electoral disruption, according to a Kenyan Red Cross report today.
The newly re-elected President Mwai Kibaki said today that political parties should meet immediately and publicly call as the for calm as the opposition leader Raila Odinga told Associated Press that the government is guilty of “genocide” after the deadly violence sparked by the disputed election result.
Fears are increasing that the bloodshed, which marks the worst crisis the country has known for decades, will spread into a larger ethnic conflict between Luo, who generally support Mr Odinga, and the Kikuyu tribe of Mr Kibaki. ::snip::

I notice Hillary speaks in ever more soothing, soft and sweet tones at her events. I attribute it to an extra focused awareness of how her support has shaken out … at least I am told it is the “blue hair” brigade.
I thought it was supposed to be armies of working women for Tested, but now I hear it’s the blue hairs. Not too many who actually sport the blue do anymore, but as a nod to the past, it is used for oldsters.
Certainly they cannot be referencing 70’s/80’s blue hairs of Eat the Rich fame.

Elizabeth Drew in politico, of all places. On Hillary needing Bill to win. I’d call it win by the skin of her teeth.
And I love the zinger in this part:
The story about Chelsea denying an “interview” with a 9 year old rep of his class newspaper, on the grounds “I don’t talk to press” indicates to me they are disciplined to the rovian max. There will be no humans in this campaign!
Huckabee is so very clever. Pulled his planned for release negative ads and gave a very low key cool to the touch Q&A with reporters as he got a haircut. [watching Tne News Hour… 😉 ]
Noticed this in The Caucus in the NYT, Edwardses (both of them) coming back at what, apparently, Michelle Obama is saying directly to people she meets and greets…
Miss D
I was just getting ot that one, Kit Seelye in The Caucus has it.
When Hillary intro’d Chelsea for the Mother Daughter tour, she declared her “off limits”.
What a scream. Bitches. She is 27 and now being paraded as an adult adornment to the campaign, if she can’t take a few questions then send her back tot he financial waterloos of Manhattan.
Huckabee is so very clever. Pulled his planned for release negative ads and gave a very low key cool to the touch Q&A with reporters as he got a haircut. [watching Tne News Hour…
Huckabee’s very good on his feet. I saw Russert try to trip him up for 20 minutes and completely fail.
Russert came close a few times on Pakistan. It was clear Huckabee was just bullshitting his way through a subject he didn’t know much about (and doing it fairly well).
But when Russert shifted over to religion and politics, he got owned. How could he not know that the typical high grade Jebotard like Huckabee’s been polishing his answers to every religion and politics question for years. It was too easy for him.
On and on it goes (via Marc Ambinder in The Atlantic):

yes I caught Russert on the rerun at 3 am.
Huckabee did his usual very adept parsing and sidestepping. Tells you a lot about organised religion in the USA!!USA!!
Gotta beat out the Lutheran Church down the street. The “battle” for souls and a church’s coffers, etc.

And where was Jeeeesuhs?

Property taxes? Christ, people 80 years old are working to pay for food and medicine. My neighbor is 82, six months post his 2nd run at quad CABG, adult son with schizophrenia and his wife has alzheimers…Insisting he is still going to be doing his house painting on the side this spring and cutting lawns this summer. He says he’ll be damned if he’s gonna lose his home though. It was brutal on him to take the step of getting meals on wheels for his wife…
Our society is totally fucked while we just move the furniture around a bit politically, just different placement of the loungers and chairs in the Houses on the Hill…Everyone else has that twing of fear always that they could all to easily be on the streets in their old age if not sooner.
Well, WRT the window dressing – to paraphrase Poppy B. —
Not. Gonna. Do- it.
hmm in a way I am getting twisted win out of this…
Edwards is surging, for real in Iowa and cash donations. Word is that after his am appearances today, he pulled in big in the mid day.
I cannot buy his game, but at least if he does well, a very close second say, the party cannot call out a populist run with a somwhat leftischer tilt.
BTW: Last DMR poll due out in about a half hour.
Also Richardsona nd Biden were getting crowds, so their numbers edging up could make them players at least. Dodd seems the forgottn man.
DMR final poll is up:
imho its a baptist preacher thing. nobody in the world can bullshit as well as a baptist preacher.
and Bill is at least a third Televangelist. He reminds me of someone called, I think, Brother Bob. Who puts his hand up to the camera and asks you to match your hand to his on the TV screen. And send MONEY. Of course…
LOL… I can see some Bobby Bakker or Swaggert end for Bill, down the road…

That’s a little like Salman Rushdie converting to Islam.
Ain’t going to lift the Fatwah against him. Osama Bin Kos and the Grand Ayatollah Howard Dean would still like to see him strapped into a white chair while they fire up the videocam.
well I never understood why, what the reasoning was behind Nader approaching Dean for the VP spot.
It seemed incongruous.

Thanks for that piece.
I put down my personal Nader voodoo doll a good time back and came to see how the un’fucking-fillibustering Dem Senate for decades enabled a Right Wing Judiciary that ultimately handed down Bush v. Gore…
To me, the Nader endorse is a pleasant eyebrow raiser…I’d like to know the dynamics behind it, to what extent ( if at all) it involved liason bridge building between Edwards Peeps & Ralph which, (if so,) I’d find commendable on principle but also very savvy politically in a fucking squeeker….
Nader is never one known to gush, his measured words re Edwards as “a glimmer of hope” in the DP won’t have much effect with the already committed starry eyed groupies in Iowa or the Party Hackery certainly. I do think Nader’s pull might be more relavent with disaffected D’s going into New Hampshire and Independents beyond if Edwards could survive that long….
The money issue re Edwards is bad but Johnny’s Po’Mouth bit really isn’t as bad since he does have (as BO says) some of the more aggressive activist labor carrying water for him. Ben Smith, who IMO is a total Clinton toady – only softball criticism of her….
anyways, Smith has a piece up on Politico about Obama being light with inroads to unions. Hillary e.g., is pulling a lot dough from the NEA, but my anecdotal experiences with teachers during GOTV is most were candy-asses more concerned with bringing or consuming the casserole than flushing neighborhoods in the cold, a kind of “We sent our money, we’re here for the party” kind of attitude…
WTF do I know though? I’m cutting through the shrink wrap on a highjacked pallet of popcorn and cigars I have on my front porch here in Jersey…LOL. Just kidding…(about the highjacked part)
It still is kabuki, methinks, having been burned so often, the only lesson we seem fated to learn ad nauseum is that politics and politicians are bought and sold wholesale in this country. I of course would be glad to be wrong about it….
Well, I think if Nader really wanted a candidate for change, he would have gone for Kucinich. I assume he’s backing Edwards because he actually has a (hope in hell) chance of getting the nomination and he’s using the right populist key words – unless Nader knows something I don’t. I just don’t see Johnny With the Hair changing the status quo in Washington.

kossucks in revolt against their intemperate leader. I couldn’t believe when I saw 800+ posts on a kos diary. I didn’t wade too much further than BHHM posted above, but several other diaries are springing up.
LOL
Ben Smith, who IMO is a total Clinton toady – only softball criticism of her….
———— BHHN
Most of them are, it seems to me. Some who came out for someone diddled around between Edwards or obama (or Dodd or Richardson or Biden) but the scene is run to criticise all (with the odd cheerleaders pompom throw) but to go soft on Mr and Mrs Bill.
The thing is the so called OBama criticism of BOTH Gore and Kerry (and it was a couple days ago) was a very off hand single liner.
It COULD be interpreted as a slam, but I saw it more as a passing observation of ’00 and ’04…
Oddly enought Obama responded several days ago to a question about his so called opposition to 527s with a much more inflammatory line and I have waited to see if anotehr camp would pick it up. It seemed a natural for Hillary to pounce on.
He was asked, if you are so opposed to 527 work, then in the GE what do you plan to do about issue ads and fighting back against the R.
His answer was he hoped to reach an AGREEMENT with the R as to what would be permissable.
It did get reported but for osme reason neither Clinton camp not Edwards has capitalised on it.
I mean, if you want to criticise earlier campaigns (that had lots of problems, no question) don’t be saying you can reach agreement w tih the R in a race.
bow wow.
36 I saw kos’ drivel and thought to myself it was his stupidest and lamest yet – and that is going some.
Amazing to see the sheep look up.
41 Leave it to kos to scramble. A lot could have been written, including your 41, that might have shed some light. But that might require thought.
There’s definitely a parallel between how kossacks rail against the Dems and then support them anyway and how they get their panties in a twist about kos but refuse to abandon him. Suckers for punishment because they just can’t allow themselves to see an alternative to his blog or the Dem party. Someone will put up an “I love kos and you should too, damnit” diary along with an “we’re all in this together – send money to the Dems now” screed and things will be all fixed (for a few days anyway). It truly is a vicious cycle.
I saw it more as a passing observation of ‘00 and ‘04…
Exactly.
well, the guy who owns the blog is backpedaling now. Bring in the “flawless” digby for back-up.
And pony-boy drops in for his cheerleading stint. Could the Manifesto be coming?
46 Miss D — Manifesto? I’m still waiting for my antipasto.
I think its worth noting the Kos bombacity juxtaposed against the
Sirota piece, “Gauging the Fear Inside the Palace Walls” that I saw a blip of last night on the Dauphin’s rec list. A bit of Markos looking over the royal urinal divider as it were, feeling perhaps a little un M Dowd in their circles, now that David’s own syndication is going well…
I boiled down my turkey bones as a last risotto.
BHHM–you could catapult to punditry with your Hillary 3rd in Iowa bet.
If you are correct, and I do hope so because it is difficult to wear a hard-boiled egg on one’s visage–I’m going to send your prediction ’round the blogosphere.
LOL melvin. Manifesto? I’m still waiting for my antipasto.
I’m with you.
hmm just reading the headlines at Ben Smith (he is good for a flood of links)
Looks like ABC will limit to top 4 out of Iowa for the debate…
and Kucinich just lost his NH state director.
hmmm.

Dee, I was thinking of just modifying some bondage appliance to hold the boiled egg if need be…LOL anyways, she has to win before I break out my- I mean this thing a friend found to….LOL …Christ, now if she wins–I suppose in fairness I’ll be FORCED to go to a some local Delights franchise to pick up a ball gag.
Store Operator, with a knowing look:
hmm Marc Ambinder at The ATlantic says that Fischer, the former chair of the Iowa Dem party who is now co chair for Obama in Iowa estimates a turn out of 200K
wellll… 2004 was 124.
The analyses that pick apart the projections for caucus numbers and who will caucus [incredibly high numbers of IND and a big big jump in R caucusing for Dems from 04) from the DMR poll are interesting to read. I have no fucking clue.
With all of this being said tho, obama now has to win.
49 Sounds like heaven. Would you believe early a.m. on the 24th Safeway had no turkey? None. Not a wing, in a huge, brand new store. Beef pot roast leftovers just don’t cut it.
So, you’re into chickens??….
No, Politics actually…
Same thing. Both are foul.
LMAO Catnip, sharp as ever…
It is true that one of the best mushroom risottos on earth is made with turkey broth. that would be mine. it’s basically an analog to the turkey dressing of my tradition-with celery, onions, rosemary et al, and lemon zest.
about turkey in washington state:
When I lived in Bellingham, it had a small-townish newspaper, which would go big on whatever culturally conventional thing happened. So when I saw a front-page article entitled “Turkey doesn’t seem to be worried about arms cut off”, I groaned inwardly, thinking it the puff T-day piece.
And then it occurred to me that it was the head, not the arms, that is cut off on T-day.
so I had to eat my giblets, so to speak.
{applause for catnip}
I could make you an award ribbon of red silk string…
melvin –
sorry you did not get your turkey but, as in misery loves company, my last two Safeway deliveries, they claimed to be out of their own brand half and half and their own brand of EggNog.
Pretty odd, imo.
;(
Anne Seltzer of the DMR Poll responded to criticism by edwards peeps that the fla was oversampled with Independents. Edwards camp also claimed 25% as the historical num for first time caucusers. Seltzer responded that No, in 2004 the rate was almost 40%. I’m not convinced that all will accrue to Obama automatically.
Underlying my soon to be cult classic take here is the notion that properly run candidate appear’s and outreach not only address prospective voters, they are also organizational building and nourishing opportunities..Something that a few days ago was advantage Edwards and Obama…I also think its dificult to turf that in at the last min in small town areas. It reminds me of being in a swing state in 2000 when a truckload of these t-shits and campaign paraphernalia arrived a few two days before the election. I imagine much of the well made cotton tees ended up as wash rags somewhere. According to the top PTB, There was neither the time nor need to get them out in areas that in their wisdom had already “abandoned fields”…Maybe it was just to see that one of Shrums subs got some milk……..LOL. Fuckheads, all.
hmmm BHHM
let me find it again, desmoinesdem at Mydd has a comment that Selzer’s sampling would need more IND than are registered inside Iowa.
Be interesting to watch, as I said (and others too) he now needs to win.
could be tough.
And having the caucus night with a triple whammy, school night, big game night (or so I have read) and hard on the heels of the XmasNY holidaze…
who knows.
hmm canot find the exact desmoinesdem comment but this is the diary and the thread. The diarist does compare actual 04 breakdown of caucusgoers with the projections from DMR for this year and what a big difference ti requires.
Who knows. It is a secret soup caucus night iwth the Dems, the Republicans run a more honest set up by far.
Kucinich throws to Obama:
I just want to avoid personal humiliation if Hillary wins Iowa. ..LOL..
Anyways, I’m out for a bit of the family roundup.. Allegedly my 17yo shnookums has arrived safely from her weekender with her girlfriends and is chowing down over at her grandmothers. I may take a small rake and some luggage to discreetly work the buffet … 😀

Wow. Denny’s move to Obama. Real quick before din, I’d like to know the same about Kuc’s moove towards Obama as Nader’s nod to Edwards. Not too shabby (politically) to the extent it was sought by outreach of the candidates or their campaigns that is…food and rolling eyeballs await…
