[I see that The Economist has noted the Great Political Lecturing Finger as well]

Yes… that would be the bus over white granny*.  If one pokes around at Chicago Trib and Chicago Sun-Times in the background stuff on Obama, the publicly told story on white granny, a linchpin of his Race Speech, gets awkward, shall I say.

One interesting tidbit I read at ChiTrib was that the Dunhams left behind Methodism and Southern Baptist, in the 50s, to join the Unitarian church when they were living in Bellevue and on on Mercer Island, WA.  They attended at the local Unitarian church, so lefty that, in the McCarthy era (the real one), it was generally referred to as the “little red church on the hill”.

However, this from the Honolulu Advertiser has information I had not seen on her work/professional background.  Considering that the Dems like to paint the Dunhams as all but latter day Dust Bowl out of Kansas blown by failure and near poverty ever westward, well, let’s just say that is not born out in Hawai’i.

The white grandmother of Barack Obama blazed a trail for women in Honolulu’s banking circles in the 1960s and 1970s as her grandson grew up surrounded by racial insensitivity.

While Obama’s views on race relations in America were being shaped, his maternal grandmother — Madelyn Dunham, now 85 — received a series of promotions at Hawai’i’s top bank. And in December 1970, she was named one of the first two female vice presidents at Bank of Hawaii.

Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, declined last week to comment on Obama’s speech about Wright or his reference to their grandmother — or their grandmother’s attitude on race.

Dunham has repeatedly declined to comment to reporters. Dunham did want to be interviewed for this story, Soetoro-Ng said, but declined because it would be unfair to other media who have made requests.

Soetoro-Ng teaches at La Pietra-Hawai’i School for Girls. She visits her grandmother at least once a day and brings her 3-year-old daughter to Dunham’s Beretania Street apartment as often as possible, she said.

The National Journal has a listing, with little analysis, of the so-called inner circle of advisors around Obama. Some names have been around, but some less so…

*For the record, I did not like it when Harold Ford jr, a Clinton/DLC stable pol, threw his black granny under the bus and said she was white (via BAR).  LOL  Let’s be sure to be even handed…  Would not want to be called a racist… oh noo…..

Lucid, last thread:

This is of course why I’ve been steadily getting over politics. At this point 4 years of one candidate or another really doesn’t matter.

I’m increasingly there myself. Not that I don’t tell people what I think if they ask (which they generally don’t after the first time, b/c they don’t like what I say), but I’m basically skimming the news, hitting fewer and fewer blogs, and tuning out.

Maybe I’ll get more interested if McKinney and the Greens find a way to inject themselves into the mess, but I doubt that is going to happen.

Peculiar II

Have been getting a “The Page Cannot Be Displayed” message every time I try to a link to a dkos dairy or access dkos from an address bar on dial-up access (floating IP number), with or without allowing cookies and scripting.

Is anyone else having a similar experience?

At first I thought it was site maintenance, but now I see others are able to view the site.

Guess I’ve been quietly banned? But I thought people who were banned could still view the site? And if I was banned, why did someone wait till at least a week after my last post (02/16/08), which was a recent, and very brief, diary (“Peculiar”/DianeL) I wrote (after a nearly two year diary hiatus) questioning how it was that things have progressed enough to have a female and black male running when two murderous criminals are still running DC.

If I was banned, it was certainly in totality, done very quietly, after the fact, and not on the heels of brawls, troll ratings, or any warning, although I’m sure my diary wasn’t received well by anyone who refuses to acknowledge that nothing major goes on anymore in this country, without permission from a group of murderous thugs .

5. marisacat - 31 March 2008

Diane

Not at Dkos as I have not been going there. Getting that screenoff and on all day using IE (just down loaded IE 7.0 and it seems buggy)

PFF says some new whatever in place at Dkos (well I scanned the Peeder article, it said something like that) so maybe technical prblems?

I would have written it with more enthusiasm and sarcasm but I’m pretty damn tired lately. If only someone would ship me to the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico or somewhere…

7. Madman in the Marketplace - 31 March 2008

It’s funny, because when I first read “Move that Bus” it made me think of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which kind of fits. A deserving family gets help, but only on someone else’s terms, and only when there is money to be made for some corporation who paid for it in return for promotional consideration.

Sums up the Donklephant party perfectly.

4. I noticed last week at dkos that when someone asked if a user had been banned they were told to see if his gift subscription page was still up. It wasn’t. But yours is, diane. So maybe it’s just techie problems.

15. diane - 31 March 2008

I delete my temp files etc. at an obsessive rate, and generally don’t allow scripting and cookies. I’ve never had this experience at a site where other people were clearly able to view it but I wasn’t able to at least get to the home page.

It’s been going on since the weekend when I tried to click a link someone provided to a diary there. Don’t know when it started because I rarely go there.

16. Madman in the Marketplace - 31 March 2008

13 – I hate that show. I watched the one where Lori Piestewa’s surviving family got a new house and wanted to scream. So much product placement crammed into an hour, dressed up as “giving”. Why don’t we treat people like this without it being a sales opportunity?

It’s so damned fake … commerce masquerading as charity, like those Pharma commercials with the damned prescription bus that Montell Williams flacks for.

Anyway, I should have known that you chose the title for that reason. It does fit Obama perfectly, and is especially good when you toss Grandma in (under) too.

17. liberalcatnip - 31 March 2008

You can try using a free proxy server to see if it’s your IP that’s blocked or if something else specific to your pc is going on.

Thanks for the link, never wanted to use anonymous proxy servers because apparently some are information traps, but I couldn’t resist and used the “anonymouse” service and was able to access dkos, but still can’t access without using the anonymous server.

Guess I was either sneakily banned or it’s some other tech problem.

Just seems odd that I can’t even view the front page.

25. diane - 31 March 2008

22

Marisa,

So far, the only site, I’m having the problem with is dkos, but it’s nice to know I’m not alone in having the problem.

By the way, I read the peeder commentary, didn’t find anything pertaining to the problem though.

26. liberalcatnip - 31 March 2008

24. Hmmm…I read your last diary there and can’t see why you would have been banned over that. Then again, they’ll ban anyone for anything over there now, it seems. Were you able to login via the proxy server?

27. diane - 31 March 2008

26

Yeah, that doesn’t make sense, since I was able to check the comments about a week after I posted the diary.

I didn’t try to login, don’t want to enter my password using an anonymous service (yes, I know, I’m suspicious of everything, can’t imagine why).

I’ll let you know if I’m able to access it at some point without the anonymous server.

The Independent’s front page story – USA 2008: The Great Depression

We knew things were bad on Wall Street, but on Main Street it may be worse. Startling official statistics show that as a new economic recession stalks the United States, a record number of Americans will shortly be depending on food stamps just to feed themselves and their families.

Dismal projections by the Congressional Budget Office in Washington suggest that in the fiscal year starting in October, 28 million people in the US will be using government food stamps to buy essential groceries, the highest level since the food assistance programme was introduced in the 1960s.

The increase – from 26.5 million in 2007 – is due partly to recent efforts to increase public awareness of the programme and also a switch from paper coupons to electronic debit cards. But above all it is the pressures being exerted on ordinary Americans by an economy that is suddenly beset by troubles. Housing foreclosures, accelerating jobs losses and fast-rising prices all add to the squeeze.

I saw a CNN piece last week about a middle-class mom (interviewed in her kitchen with its lovely granite counter tops) who had a couple of kids and was now using the food bank. Knowing how tough it is for food banks to stay stocked in the best of economic times, what came to mind was more tension to come between the “poor” (as they/we are statistically defined) and the middle-class as there’s more pressure to take care of more people in need.

While the politicos send out piddly $600 cheques and try to figure out what they’re going to do to help people out of the subprime mess, it’ll once again be left to the private/charity sector to fill in the aid blanks. That could make for a really tense public clash between the classes.

Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant South,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh!

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

No! he’s not one of those coloreds.

Oooo…that Obama is one smart fella!

How many people here can honestly say they figured out how to embed links in their first posting? That may seem trivial to you … now. He [Obama] did it in his opening line — three times! That is a very clear “hello world” sort of signal. He was demonstrating he spoke our language, was comfortable with the technology, and understood our culture.

Or that he learned html in 3 easy lessons? You decide.

Some people are easily impressed, I guess.

Great Progressive Minds Of The Blogosphere At Work!

From Duncan Black:

I’ll optimistically assume that [charges] won’t be filed, but the fact that it’s even an issue is hideous.

[snip of AP story about 14 year-old girl who may face charges after having a stillborn baby in airplane lavatory, dumping it in the trash, and not telling anyone what happened until after the fetus was discovered]

…and, yes, this does highlight the fact that men and women are indeed a wee bit different.

Yes Duncan, by all means it’s vital that you use this very sad and horrifying story to try to score points in an argument you lost in one of your comment threads.

I’ll just note that the girl comes from Texas, and claims she didn’t know she was pregnant. The plane landed at Houston’s Bush International Airport. I’m sure I don’t need to point out how ironically perfect that is.

61. marisacat - 1 April 2008

Oh for God’s sake.

And what a mess that a drop of psychology cannot be applied to womnn, esp underage women, who give birth under stress and alone. Particularly after, mostl likely, hiding a pregnancy…. They panic and smply go into a separate place from the event.

But no… let’s arrest a frightened 14 year old.

62. marisacat - 1 April 2008

cbc (audio) did a show on Kansas and the current politics. Ben Smith extracted some blunt commentary from Emmanuel Cleaver, supporting HIllary.

In an unusually frank interview on Canadian public radio, CBC, Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver of Kansas City — a Hillary supporter and superdelegate — gives a sense of how tenuous Clinton’s hold on many black superdelegates is.

“If I had to make a prediction right now, I’d say Barack Obama is going to be the next president,” he says just after 18:00. “I will be stunned if he’s not the next president of the United States.”

He doesn’t back off his support for Clinton, and has criticism for Obama:

“He is articulate – in the black tradition, he would probably be mediocre, but in White America…” he says, a bit dismissively, of Obama’s speaking style, going on to joke about the word “articulate.”

“For White Americans, it’s like, this guy can speak,” he says. He also said he was “outraged over the outrage” at the Wright controversy.

Earlier in the interview, he was asked about the race going all the way to the convention.

“If I do the party line, I’m supposed to say — and maybe I’ll say just so if anybody hears it they can say well, ‘Cleaver did the party line before he told the truth,’ — we believe that a contest going all the way to the convention is good for America.”

He makes a football analogy of his support for Clinton.

“Even though I don’t expect the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the Indianapolis Colts, I cheer for the Kansas City Chiefs,” he said, and goes on to cast it in terms of friendship and personal loyalty.

If he switched to Obama, “There would be African-Americans cheering,” Cleaver says. “But I would have difficulty shaving in the morning, unless I could shave without looking in the mirror.”

Well Smith did call it BLUNT.

63. Miss Devore - 1 April 2008

60. long ago, when I worked in an ER, a 14yr old came in, because she started having a miscarriage while waiting in line for some rock concert. In instances like this, we had to call the “responsible” parent–which was her father, and get permission to treat a minor.I felt so bad for this girl, and just wanted to get the permission, so I told him his daughter was being admitted for “vaginal bleeding”, and would he consent to treatment. And he asked “where’s that?” I think perhaps he understood the word “vagina”, but not the vowel change in “vaginal.” I sat there for seconds that seemed eternal–do I have to say “pussy” or “between her knees” to get this guy to understand?

64. melvin - 1 April 2008

63 — I knew a girl who got pregnant at 17. When asked if they had used protection, she responded “How would I know? I wouldn’t look down there. That’s disgusting.” A churchgoing family, of course.

What can you say to such ignorance?

Oddly enough this story had a happy ending. She had the baby and they got married. Six years on they seem quite happy. I would chalk that up to blind luck and the relative wealth of the two families.

65. liberalcatnip - 1 April 2008

67. bayprairie - 1 April 2008

as recently as the 60s, early diagnosis of a pregnancy was something of an art within the medical profession. i can quite easily see how a child of 14 might be unaware of it for months. that hardly means she’s stupid or ignorant.

Alice Walker on her support for Obama – the new Mandela.

Apparently, she’s not all that familiar with his foreign policy:

I want an end to the war immediately, and I want the soldiers to be encouraged to destroy their weapons and drive themselves out of Iraq. I want the Israeli government to be made accountable for its behaviour to the Palestinians,

And her comments about white women are sure to raise some eyebrows.

72. JJB - 1 April 2008

as recently as the 60s, early diagnosis of a pregnancy was something of an art within the medical profession.

No it wasn’t, if you mean that it was difficult to diagnose in its early stages. The adult women I grew up around all knew they were pregnant sometime during weeks 4-8. And if you don’t know you’re pregnant at the stage this girl apparently was, you most certainly are ignorant, whether through your own fault or (more likely) that of your parents being the only question. That in fact is the real scandal here, that in this day and age a girl could be that far along in her pregnancy and not be aware of it, if indeed she was unaware.

73. marisacat - 1 April 2008

well, I did not htink much of the article from Walker. I read it earlier… So classic. However she does seem to think this idea he will reach out to other leaders, who are not our bosom buds (like Mushie and Maliki are so much our friends, LOL) wipes out her other worries. IN WHT UNIVERSE?

What I thought when I read it, Hot Damn. She thinks he is running as an INDEPENDENT. That the Dem party blew up and was reduced to incinerated ash.

reminds me of an excerpt of a book on disneyland I read in Harper’s–his point was that the level of illusion was so high, that disneyland goers in Orlando never noticed the carts that went around picking up employee/characters because they had fainted in their heavy costumes. One anecdote described a parade float that went by, and because there was some armature for the character to rest upon on the float, when that character fainted it looked as if they were hanging from the cross.

81. wu ming - 1 April 2008

‘ve had family members who didn’t find out that they were pregnant until the 7th or 8th month. it sounds preposterous, until you figure in irregular spotting, how the individual women carry the fetus (the relative in question didn’t look pregnant to me when they finally figured it out, although that changed pretty fast as it shifted forward a couple of weeks later), and the overwhelming power that not thinking something possible (or desperately not wanting it to be true) can have in blinding one to reality, or coming up with internally plausible explanations for various symptoms.

for a teenager where pregnancy (esp. unintended) can be a huge, life destabilizing deal, it’s not all that hard to imagine people talking themselves out of admitting that they’re pregnant until things are pretty far along.

What in hell does Duncan Black mean by that? On second thought, I don’t want to know.

The Leftwing Fratboyz prance onward.

Re: a few of the following comments in this thread: for the record, I didn’t know I was pregnant until I was six months along, and I was neither ignorant nor fat. This happens quite often, I was told by both my OB and my doula. Women are different, they have different fertility and menstrual cycles, and their bodies respond differently to pregnancy. Shocking, eh? We’re such crazy unpredictable bitches.

My husband and I had gone on a trip to Budapest where we had eaten an endless supply of wonderful Hungarian food (cabbage rolls as big as your head!) and drank lots of Hungarian wine and sat in coffeehouses eating tortes with loads of whipped cream, so when a week after we returned I couldn’t zip my jeans all the way up, I blamed it on Hungarian hospitality. it took a few weeks more for me to think “Hmm, why am I gaining weight in only one spot?

Dumb Pundit story: yesterday I was flipping radio stations in the car and came across an NPR thing where a pundit was giving a talk somewhere. What grabbed my attention was his comment (quoted from memory): “I fear the religious right less than I fear the hyperindividualists who are so common today.” WTF? Who is this idiot and what does he mean by “hyperindividualist”? It turned out it was EJ Dionne flogging a new book of his about religion and politics.

It got worse: in answer to a question from the audience, “are the metaphysical concepts of good and evil present in today’s politics” (a somewhat less interesting question than “What’s your favorite color”) he said basically “Yes but there are gray areas and you have to be careful when deciding what is good and what is evil.”

This guy gets paid for this, apparently.

Miss D – did you? I don’t read or comment on political-rant blogs anymore, except occasionally for this one, and bemoan the time I wasted doing so.

DKos has gone completely berserk, I’m told.

Baseball is more rewarding 😉

Just finished watching the PBS show “Bad Voodoo” about a group of guys who have been sent back to Iraq, some for the 5th tour.

The documentary was made by a woman in NH who gave them cameras and edited their stories together. I thought it was really well done and they soldiers were anything but of the Toby Keith variety. You could see (and hear) their unhappiness with the mission and one talks openly of his PTSD. It’s only an hour long and worth a look.

Can’t remember if anybody linked to this when it was first posted. If they did, sorry for the duplication:

Anti-war campaigners have to change electoral tactics

When asked why they aren’t expressing their anti-war opinions through the anti-war movement, many say they have simply lost faith in the power of protest. They marched against the war before it began, marched on the first, second and third anniversaries. And yet, five years on, US leaders are still shrugging: “So?”

That’s why it’s time for the anti-war movement to change tactics. We should direct our energy where it can still have an impact: the leading Democratic contenders.

Many argue otherwise. They say that if we want to end the war, we should simply pick a candidate who is not John McCain and help them win: we’ll sort out the details after the Republicans are evicted from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Some of the most prominent anti-war voices – from MoveOn.org to the Nation, the magazine we both write for – have gone down this route, throwing their weight behind the Obama campaign.

This is a serious strategic mistake. It is during a hotly contested campaign that anti-war forces have the power to actually sway US policy. As soon as we pick sides, we relegate ourselves to mere cheerleaders.

For the first time in 14 years, weapons manufacturers are donating more to Democrats than to Republicans. The Democrats have received 52% of the defence industry’s political donations in this election cycle – up from a low of 32% in 1996. That money is about shaping foreign policy and, so far, it appears to be well spent.

In case anyone cares…

EJ Dionne is rabid, at the moment, on so called (in his mind) hyperindividualism as day after day he mimics or supports ObamaRama, who is (I believe from his writigns) going to call for “collective action” schemes.

The righties are alll over this. LOL. 16 years ago EJ was doing the same support scheisse for one Bill Clinton. They had marathon 3 hour phone calls. I thought then it sounded very teen-ager.

And for EJ it ties into his years long uber Catholic bullshit. During Schiavo he did a column on his personal faith. BULLSHIT.

Should Obamamama make it to the WH, I suspect this (collectie action chit chat) will undergird his religiousity as well as calls for a form of Peace Corps/National Service/Remember when we went to the Moon/Etc. We are gonna hear about that stuff ad nauseum.

Just a pre draft imo.

I suggest a drinking game of “Who is Obama playing to day to shove the medicine down” Is he Mandela, is he JFK, is he RFK, is he HHH (thanks Klobuchar) and so on. When he bombs soemthing he will be Truman.

GAG.

IOZ went to black with a pale orange print, lettering whatever.

I can barely read it. Very dynamic looking but I guess I am too elderly. Or my eyes are.

Bad Voodoo just coming on here…

Thanks wilfred……………………………….

IOZ’s earlier blog design was a delight to the eyes and I envied its simplicity and elegance.

Has IOZ had a stroke? What can explain this hideous color scheme? And the banner that he once had is now replaced with something almost unrecognizable…horrible, truly horrible.

I have no idea what it means… but I (or the blog) rate one donkey and one elephant.

Liberal catnip rates three donkeys.

Claire McCaskill all excited about Obama’s PA road trip on Hardball: “And people will get to touch him…”

Oooo…aaahhhhh….

Throw those crutches away and walk! You’ve been healed! (And don’t forget to send money now!)

108. marisacat - 2 April 2008

hmm McCaskill…

well MO was instructive. It ws a very hard pull out for Obama. Took days to get a final and then it was 1 pt.

He had McCaskill and whatever machine the Carnahans can [still] pull out.

Good Luck in the GE.

109. liberalcatnip - 2 April 2008

I still say Obama needs to lose the suit and tie in PA if he’s trying to win the working class vote. He just looks like a nerd running around in that outfit.

McCaskill was positively glowing about Obama’s win in MO. I think she needs to lay off the caffeine.
