The end seems to be some loyalty oath to war… but frankly my brain broke down. It gave up.

feel like I have to post this again from last thread, to put these two assholes and their warmongering in perspective:
25 years ago today, this man saved my life. And yours.
Just to spread the joy of commentary on personal styling… looks like Beschloss has a new do. Or dispensed with toupe and got hair grafts or something,..
I doubt anyone can stand it, but The Page has posted spin distribution from the spin room at Ole Miss
http://thepage.time.com/
Commentary from the Globe & Mail:
lol
The McC cmap already have a YouTube out.. on the debate.
Couric has results of “scientific” real-time poll of debate watchers.
Sounds like Obama picked up favorability.
This Week: McCain
Face the Nation: Obama
Meet the Press: Bill Clinton, Obama’s Axelrod, McCain’s Schmidt
Fox News Sunday: Sens. Graham, Kerry
Late Edition: Pakistani Pres. Asif Ali Zardari
Another one from the G&M:
Joebama’s on CNN with Teh Beard. I didn’t know those guys even stayed up this late.
CBS: Early Poll Results Suggest More Uncommitted Voters Saw Obama As Debate Winner
Chris Rock on Maher, after Bill asks him about McCain trying to change the rules: “Ask the indians about white men and rules. They’ll change the rules about everything. Sometimes I think Obama actually thinks having the most votes will mean something … they’ll look him dead in the face, say ‘you got the most votes, too bad you lost!’. We used to count votes, now we count bacon!”
BBC recap, FWIW.
Forty-nine percent of these voters think Obama would make the right decisions about Iraq. Fifty-five percent think McCain would.
Next time McC will tell us about some epic dinosaur battle he observed
ugh.
13 – and then Sarah will point out that dinosaurs were around when Jesus walked the Earth.
Nader is going off on the debate on Maher. “Militarism won”.
“McCain wants to rebuild Georgia over there. What about Georgia over here?”
Next time McC will tell us about some epic dinosaur battle he observed
War is STILL GOOD! (But psstt . . . ixnay on the eedgray!)
Biden on KeefO ratting out Johnny on veterans’ deep lerv. . .
I think she saw dinosaurs wearing crucifixes.
Biden tripped over his clown shoes trying to give his dear ol’ pal John a kiss while ribbing him gently about his total venality.
18 – well, Obama kept saying “I agree with John, but …”
stupid, stupid donks.
oh, I am so remembering why I voted for Nader in ’00.
willie brown on local PBS is saying it’s all downhill from here.. and that there should hve been joint TownHalls, across weeks rather than this official debate format.. He’s right on that.
19 – I think that’s supposed to be the civility card.
Biden is Lieberman 2008.
ugh… from The Blog at Weekly Standard:
Biden is even worse than I had expected. Drool and maggots.
Buchanan approved of the Spain schtick, but is giving the slugfest to McCain. Acknowledges O might have picked up some nice people’s votes.
Pat loves the ringside like life itself.
Maher New Rules: “I think the recent news from Wall St. has made us all less tolerant, and only reinforced the stereotype — that white people are shiftless, thieving welfare queens.”
ugh. Prop 4, the third time they have tried in three years to get parental notification passed, is polling slightly ahead. It may pass this time. PBS local saying that latino support was effectively rallied this time for it, supporting it 2 to 1
Defeated twice…. and they just keep coming back. They are very carefully calling it “parental notification” and NOT parental agreement or permission.
25 – Agree. Haven’t been able to stand him for years, but thought he’d clean up a tad better than this.
WAY underestimated the Band of Buddies drool, too.
From The Campaign Spot at NRO:
All the donks … Biden and Clinton and Obama and on and on.
Too fucking nice, too fucking “civil”. Jeez, if you really want to win, fucking rip your opponent’s throat out. NO ONE has ever won by being “civil”.
They are so damned pathetic.
Is ANYBODY pointing out that McC’s running mate WAS a Miss Congeniality in 1984, before she donned the sacred pit-bull rouge à lèvres?
How are they getting away with this ruse?
Tweety’s popping a gasket that Obama didn’t call out McCain on the notion of endless blessed war.
Who knew Tweety had any such gasket left?
24 – Oh that Hank!
Sorry about being off subject, just logged on…..
Marisa, thanks for cleaning up my last post two threads ago! And re your post #8, on. We’re Trapped in a Game Show:
….somebody had best be with the patient round the clock…
As I found out helping someone close, whose mother died quite unexpectedly, not even that works sometimes, I hope to share a more complete story sometime……..will say right now: after her mother died.I discovered what seemed a rather odd lab in the middle of the Beverly [Elder] Care (finally, no longer in business (at least, under that name), after being “number one” or two, nationwide (which never seems to bode well for the customer), I guess there were just too many lawsuits…I believe a Cali AG had a part) place she died in, when they had no resident doctors and had to send a urine specimen to another lab. My suspicions may have been totally incorrect..then again, they may have been quite valid…the “Elderly’s” death prognosis is way too easily equated to their age for the times.
Anywho, I went down quite a few rabbit holes re “The Board” at Beverly Care…one of which is related to my recents about National Geo… and (for a fact) DOD money given out to Medical Schools..(wonder the real reason’s for all of the Congestive Heart Failure…..Negligence?..or worse too many times?)
And what a myth about a citizen’s legal redress……………………….
32 – oh, you mean this Sarah?
As for Tweety, he was such a cheerleader himself for this misbegotten war that I think a little guilty projection going on.
Palin names charities to receive tainted
donations.
Not sure how far back McC use of “Miss Congeniality” goes. it pre dates the Palin arrival. I don’t see a problem with it. It is popular vernacular, quick reference… and meaningless to my eye. However calling a working reporter in the field “sweetie” (esp when you don’t want to answer a pointed question) is something different to my mind.
Yeah Sully is deeply in love iwth the YouTube of SP at the ’84 pageant. I have heard her in interview on the pageant. She seems less than happy she did it, but was then, and still, glad to get the money. So she says.
It’s nto cheating in a third tier law school (gosh maybe it was all of second tier), for one. And I just read (think at Tapper) that Biden is STILL confused, saying he himself was a miner. Someone call Biden gfather or NKinnock. Maybe they can help him.
I don’t care if it predates Palin. He’s dating Palin now.
It’s disrespectful.
jeez…feel like the doormouse that just unexpectedly put in their two cents from the teapot…….
But calling Palin the fake she appears to be…..was like a shot of expresso (is that spelled wrong?)
…sha la la la lalalala…..…yes, still listening to Roy…. feel so bad….I’ve got a worried mind…lookin forward to happier times….
Obama isn’t making jokes about plagiarism, is he?
HTML accident at 36. Bad ital end tag. Sorry!
LOL No but he offered up Biden as the answer to his not holding hearings on Afghanistan. I think next McC will get to his attendance on the Veteran Affairs Committee, that he ran on, being seated on, as an issue in his 04 senate run.
Pretty entertaining.
They have all congealed. past tense.
Do my standards get that more exacting year after year, or is the level of stupidity promulgated by our leaders and media on the rise? Thinking back to the Reagan/Mondale debates, even though the former was suffering form extreme alzheimer’s, he at least had a remote intelligence to his debating technique.
Christ. Let me debate them – at least it would be entertaining…

tainted donation to tainted “charity”. there’s a certain logic to it.

I suppose that comment may seem a bit lopsided on my part…..so let me clarify, I think they’re all assholes……but I’m still doing a slow stew about what seemed to be the feminine pass given Palin…which included all kinds of hurled shit onto a lot of people who post here by someone who has a habit of patronizing to my mind (but hasn’t posted on this thread, yet (to my visibility)…..
31. NO ONE has ever won by being “civil”.
Maybe Obamalama was going for the Miss Congeniality crown.
43
Interesting…..I don’t remember equating anything close to intelligence with Reagan….Power, Yes…..The thing I remember most vividly, was that after the mikes were turned off, I could swear, he was mouthing..”I never said you could retract missiles…,” re Star Wars,..or something to that effect…..
jus sayin…..
45 – Thanks. Couldn’t make myself even go there.
Pity the Democrats will be playing along with CPC and federally funding them. And abstinence. And cutting bc.
Why do they act like that? Myself, my opinon it is that so many of them BELIEVE in it. Henry Hyde stalwart helpers in shafting poor women, 32 years ago… 3 years after the passage of Roe, and providing funding for abortions, were Democrats.
The shame of it all. And I regret every vote I ever cast for them. And I NEVER voted for a R. Not even the one that ran agasint Feinstein from the left. Course I never voted for her after ’78.
50
Many of us are with you in having voted for assholes, who in reality made no difference in the effect they had on the populace, than Republicans…
I certainly am, on a Presidential level I’ve always voted Democrat.,…and never Republican, for anthing…..not really sure what I’ll do this time at the last minute………..except that I will not vote for Mc Cain…Possibly Cynthia…..not looking forward to not voting at all…but might just do that…
….geee, so shocked that A Handmaiden’s Tale seems to be regaining popularity……in such heartwarming times……………..I want to say it came out near twenty plus years ago..at least that’s when it depressed the fuck out of me, that along with, was it the Women’s Room…..my…how we’ve progressed.having been enlightened……..

Debate transcript
Just caught KO saying that McC said Pakistan was (currently) a failed state. That’s not what he said:
KO also seemed to think it’s big news that McC admitted the US has used torture. Well hello? Abu Ghraib, Keith?
KO really needs to get his head out of Obama’s ass.
..anyone want to join me for a late night bowl of clam chowder doused liberally with white and black pepper, some saltines and sharp cheddar….. ? Ahhhhh, and some KETTLE, SALT & Fresh Ground PEPPER potato chips?
i used to keep semi-daily notes, and save and arrange links for an email tree that spent a great deal of time on reproductive rights related issues. i’m no longer sure even how long i did that, almost a year, a little over perhaps. by the time i pushed away i was in much the same place, finding it increasingly harder to “even go there”. i wasn’t even dealing with the physical reality of it either, like some we know, just the online sites, and news items and bills and laws. now i can take it again in bits and pieces, im sad to say, because i have an idea what to expect going in. whats kind of odd about this particular organization is its a CPC that actually calls itself that. generally they try and mask the use of the term.
and just to be absolutely clear when i said “typical crapola. from the CPC website” that wasnt in reference to your comment at all. i should have said “typical CPC crapola. from the CPC website”. if not for your comment i would have missed the intent of the donations entirely. knowing the type organization shes donating to is solid proof that palin is agressively anti-choice. that organization clearly attempts to manipulate those it claims to offer aide to, using guilt and half-truths to serve their agenda prior to serving the needs of their client.
and isn’t it nice to know both political parties in this country see such quackery as a substitute for medical care? not to mention some being worthy of 60 million dollars in federal funding as of 2006.
vanity ultrasounds by non-professionals for everybody! with no additional charge for the guilt thrown in.
😉
War is Good. Guilt is Gravy.
re. 57 –
the telling thing about mccain saying pakistan was a failed state when mussharraf did his coup is that it elides the fact that musharraf actively deposed an elected president (a weasel, but an elected one) when nawaz sharif tried to rein in the pakistani military’s adventurism in kashmir when india and pakistran came close to serious blows.
mccain’s “failed state” thing is an excuse for a coup, whom bush immediately started backing once he’d come to power.
if he’d said pakistan was a failed state from the get-go, or since zia ul-haq took over, it would have read differently, but as it stands, mccain was explicitly carrying water for a dictator in that statement.
as opposed to saakashvili, where both of them were shamelessly carrying water for that dictator.
59 – It is incredibly depressing, isn’t it?
Legendary actor Paul Newman dies at age 83
Paul Newman has died.
63. mccain’s “failed state” thing is an excuse for a coup,
I don’t doubt that and the history since then. KO was just quite excited when he thought McC said Pakistan IS a failed state now.
59. We had a controversy pop up in Calgary a few years ago when it was discovered that one of these so-called pregnancy help centers was selling itself as a place for complete info about options. Not so, of course. Glad it was exposed.
Paul Newman has died.
well, Pakistan has never really been a settled state. It’s never really been stable for more than a few years at a time, and much of the blame for that can be laid at the feet of the US and UK.
62.
yeah it is.
one of the clown-shoe blogger’s associates cites online poll results early in the a.m. as proof of paper maché jesus warrior’s win.

From all I’ve ever read or heard, it seemed like Paul Newman, and his wife were just really decent human beings who cared about other people.
Rest in Peace Paul Newman……..hugs to your wife and family.
…..speaking of just human beans people who care, I really like melvin’s recent post….
Hollywood Reporter, on last night’s viewing. So far, just the network numbers that Nielsen tracks over night. Cable numbers to come.
72 – Agree . . . always liked his sort of hardass insistence on humility, too. Treated his own image irreverently, with pleasure.
Found a 2006 interview on YouTube, discussing the Hole in the Wall camps generally, after one opened in Hungary.
Newman interviewed in Budapest in 2006.
Having an interesting conversation about the reasoning for fiscal year ends (financial), the US’ being September 30th, the one in question a 51-52 week year end, medical industry……can see the reasoning for agriculture, but curious about the others, and the beginnings (or was that one “n”) of them….

Just for the record, Lehman Brothers fiscal year end was november 30th…why?
Al Jazeera has some overseas reactions to last night’s debate.
shall we go to Wharton….. for the answers …do the current students have a clue? Does anyone? Likely,….Mr. Soros?…how are things in Dubai?……glad you think so……………..
79 – Wiki has some info on various fiscal year systems, but Wiki’s entry on Lehman Brothers makes reference to Sept 30 as its third-quarter accounting period. Where did you see Nov. 30 cited?
ahhhh Roy….that sweet background chorus dumb be dumb, be dumb…ooh yeah, yeah…. all the while knowing, that they and that sweet, goofy blind man…had a gift no one could ever take away from them, somewhere at their core……………..

Re Paul Newman: Aside from all of the other numerous praises pouring in for him, is it irreverent to add, that the food he sold under the Newman’s Own label is awfully good?
The microwave popcorn was especially yummy for its time (when it first came out), and I don’t know what I’d do without his Chunky Peach Salsa…
90
so what was in the works hon,…or coming up…?
Also re newman… sad to say, the announcement of his passing was not a surprise… it had recently been rumored a couple weeks ago that he had declined further treatment for his cancer, the implication being that he did not have very long.
SEC concedes Oversight Flaws Fueled Collapse.
I noticed that Le Monde earlier had a headline that said: Paul Newman est mort.
Wow, that is the pinnacle of epitaphs, is it not? You know you’ve really made it when you get the French saying “est mort” after your name…
92 – Partial to the roasted garlic salsa, myself. FYI – Apparently the Organics line, launched by daughter Nell, is now a separate, for-profit entity that pays royalties to the parent outfit. CNN has an article on the Newman’s Own brands here.
93 – No clue!
Re Newman
saw film of him a few months ago at a car race or rally or somthing or other. Looked like death then, tho much denials followed the exposure. Not too surprising (his dying), tho sometimes people can hang on…
For the French, he probably approached monstre sacre status. Anyway, ever since the clips from the car race day, I keep thinking of Hud, which was searing. I tried a few weeks ago to scare up some still shots from it online to use in something or other, but not that much was available.

Reading around this am, I was reminded that just a few years ago “Lehman Bros” was trolling around as “Shearson Lehman American Express”.
They do change their drag a lot.
yeah NYCO, loved that cereal with the blueberries!
*******
95
again, the SEC, only acknowledging their negligence when they hardly have a choice, really, really, really wants to change from the US accounting standards put in place after Enron to what is called International Accounting Standards (who’s running France et al……?)…there’s something putrid in those details…..despite what a cesspool the US is currently, Europe, among others have been cesspools for quite a long time……….to the minds of their ‘little folk’……
Interesting article of McClatchy ‘s in the Miami Herald, on HUD block grants coming thru to the states to aid in foreclosure mess, from leg signed by Bush in July.
99 – Actually, I saw this article at BBC the other day, indicating that the French banks are weathering the storm better than many, thanks to historically cautious approaches to lending.
French hold out against credit crunch
well I never perceived the same appraoch to credit, not even to store charge accts, in France in terms of what is here. Always much more conservative, credit was a privilege basically… Nor was there a national overheated housing market. Just a very different approach.
I ahve read analyses of the UK under Thatcher, that she and her wave of bureaucrats did re work (or work at re working) the UK system, which previously had been “Building Societies” that one borrows from, often for an extended mortgage and 99 year leaseholds.
At least that was my impression over the past 20, 30 years.
America, every man a king, every home a castle. Til bankrupt.
101
Actually, and wish I had’ve saved that WAPO link, I read the other day, that small US banks couldn’t be doing much better then they are…..It is possible that the larger French Banks have been prevented from a run, by not Disclosing the house of cards their financial sytem is built upon simply because they are not required to.
since i AM semi-anonymous 🙂 i’ll confess that i like one of the other ritt directed films best. based on elmore leonard’s novel, Hombre.
Time for a new model of (post-bubble) affordable housing?
Sandbag House Wins Humanitarian Award
More on the design from Marketwatch.
Sandbag houses in moderation, I think.
then again, I don’t know squat about the European financial system, but I do sense, their’s is no Rose Garden either, and they have a hideous stench ridden, oh so patronizing, heirachy system…….thinking again about that Baroness catnip posted about………
Quite a few reports around that small US banks are doing fine, and are solvent… IF they did nto get drawn into the slippery game that is bringing down some of the big boys.
I thnk it was Jane Jacobs who, decades ago, to do wtih development, pointed out that “growth for the sake of growth” is the definition of cancer.
It’s been coming for a long time.

I had forgotten about Hombre Will pull up a review… With Hud, I saw it as a child, when ti came out. Still remember the theatre that night, out Geary Blvd. Several early 60s pictures I saw at that age stayed with me, in singular fashion. Another was the stupefyingly amazing The Pumpkin Eater
hankies ……all around to those who are stumbling and perhaps in mortal danger (please don’t go there, it’s not your time), onto their follies….not to met mention assholes, didn’t ya see it?…we all have our hanky moments…………..
jeez I’ve shunned so many movies……must see Hombre……and must make it to the backlogged songs of those that quite love to rub the skin off their sweet kissable fingers making music for eternity……………..
Here is the IMDb page for Hombre

105. I’ve always wanted to build a straw bale house ever since I read about them decades ago in Mother Earth News. A few years ago I also heard about the Red Feather housing project which I thought was a great idea for any community.

interesting stuff at wiki on ritt and newman
haven’t seen the pumpkin eater nor several of the above either (i dont think). have to pencil them in.

I read one review of The Big Slobber at Invesco field… it mentioned that when he promised “coming conflicts” young people wearing peace signs, cheered.
Lotta self hypnosis going on.
May they live with the Jesus they bargained for and with. That’s all I ask.
119.
I’ve struggled all day (the parts of which I was awake) to figure out what to write about the debate. I agree with IOZ – I don’t know how so-called liberals can applaud what went on last nite. I don’t think anybody won, including the American public.
poking around at wiki it reminds that hud was based on a larry mcmurtry novel. before he moved away from houston he was also a bookseller of used/collectable/rare books, i was never in his houston store :::sigh:::: he moved a decade too soon. the one hes running now, booked up, is supposed to be something to see. according to wiki it is:
arguably the largest single used bookstore in the United States, carrying somewhere between 400,000 and 450,000 titles
its in archer city tx though, up by wichita falls. no way am i driving to wichita falls.
122
it was loaded with low points. Filled with war and, frankly, they were too alike for my taste.
123
I hope his bookstore remains open, in this neck of the woods (which will go unmentioned)…independently owned bookstores (bakeries, music stores, machine shops, auto mechanics, grocery stores (outside of those breaking labor laws to survive), et al, are apparently depasse (sic?)…………..it’s a defense company town…much like the old westinghouse communities….tried to live in what appeared a more human friendly, dynamic area when I first moved to this state…wasn’t affordable………………there are so many myths that eventually will be revealed for what they are….myths….
the worst part was when they waved the dead corpses of the two soldiers around the stage to make rhetorical points.

126. And then there was Obama mentioning that “over 4,000” American soldiers had died. I guess it’s not important to have the exact number anymore. What’s a few hundred here and there?
yeah me too. wiki says he came close to closing it in 2005 but kept it open due to customer requests. i suppose he does a lot of business over the phone. the website is here.
having a bookseller like that, especially in a ungodly godforsaken place like texas is much like finding a secret, hidden grotto in the desert containing a waterfall fed by artesian springs that always flow at exactly 72 degrees :). whats sad is the best ones around me are gone. still one or two though. that link goes to one i didn’t miss out on, but people die, or move on or go out of business due to the chains.
he also doesn’t carry his own books. which i like and is a good idea.
thats style.

129. the website is here.
Yikes that’s hard to read. Too bad because I collect rare and first edition books. (Buy low, sell high – that is, when I actually get around to selling them). I also started a mini-collection of mid-century (and older) etiquette and marriage advice type books for women. Good for a laugh. 😉

Bay one of the most heartbreaking store closings that has happened in this neck of the woods lately was a music store, which sold tons of sheet music and books, a one of kind place that one might expect, in an ooh so correct place as this place pats itself on the back for,….not to close down…I fear..we’ll all wake up one day and wonder what the fuck we allowed to happen…actually, I realize…much of it has already happened……………

Maybe they should just wheel a soldier that’s been freshly killed out on stage next time, anoint the candidates’ foreheads with his/her blood like they do kids who take their first deer. They could eat his/her heart to absorb the courage of the fallen. Hell, while they’re at it maybe our Warrior in Chief should adopt their fallen’s spouse and children.
more re that fine human bean….
Cat on a Hot Tinned Roof jump off Maggie…jump off….
And they’d both do it. Be a fearful race between them who could get to the body first…
The Long Hot Summer…
here’s the boy
James McMurtry “We can’t make it here”
High school girl with a bourgeois dream
Just like the pictures in the magazine
She found on the floor of the laundromat
A woman with kids can forget all that
If she comes up pregnant what’ll she do
Forget the career, forget about school
Can she live on faith? live on hope?
High on Jesus or hooked on dope
When it’s way too late to just say no
You can’t make it here anymore
Now I’m stocking shirts in the Wal-Mart store
Just like the ones we made before
‘Cept this one came from Singapore
I guess we can’t make it here anymore
Should I hate a people for the shade of their skin
Or the shape of their eyes or the shape I’m in
Should I hate ’em for having our jobs today
No I hate the men sent the jobs away
I can see them all now, they haunt my dreams
All lily white and squeaky clean
They’ve never known want, they’ll never know need
Their shit don’t stink and their kids won’t bleed
Their kids won’t bleed in the damn little war
And we can’t make it here anymore
Will work for food
Will die for oil
Will kill for power and to us the spoils
The billionaires get to pay less tax
The working poor get to fall through the cracks
Let ’em eat jellybeans let ’em eat cake
Let ’em eat shit, whatever it takes
They can join the Air Force, or join the Corps
If they can’t make it here anymore
yeah its laughable. what people call progress these days often isn’t.
and yes catnip. that website sucks! no “professionals” coding those pages. haha. i bet interesting people answer the phones and in archer city have time to talk. i mean who the heck would put a bookstore smack dab in the middle of the last picture show? when i get laid off (again) i should ask them if they’re hiring.

so pathetic….we have murderous people who never seem to be without ‘jobs’ with obscene salaries, yet those who want no more than a small space and some friends live in constant fear of being without any means of paying for the least things they need to stay alive…..in constant fear of losing jobs, not due to incompetence, but due to the stock put into the opinions of those who generally have never lived in the shoes of those whose lives they make unbearable, and if they have lived in those shoes, it most certainly, was not for long because they had no compunction about going for that ugly gold and letting others suffer as they may……
141 – such a great song
