as in, Mandate Their Asses

More than 250 in the House (make Nancy happy!), def 60 in the Senate (could be edgy, some, a couple, of the nearly dead will scrape in… I think) and more than a 5 pt spread for Obama.  As much as possible.

Sock it to them!

^^^^^

Other than that, a local tidbit, I am getting robocalls on all sides of “8”, SS Marriage.  AND both sides are using audio of Ob on “civil unions”, “Prop 8”, “Gay Marriage”, tampering with “the constitution” (that would be our state constitution, but he is vague) and so on.

He ended up servicing all sides with quotes.  Way to go! (and it could be a harbinger)

Sock it to them!

Last, specifically for distraction (a word overused by the Ob camp!), I had assumed this got widespread coverage end of last week, but I am gathering it did not… There is an absence of good photos of Otto which may be one reason.  Or, perhaps, that juggling of the crabs in his tank is just too revealing a metaphor.

The short-circuit had baffled electricians as well as staff at the Sea Star Aquarium in Coburg, Germany, who decided to take shifts sleeping on the floor to find out what caused the mysterious blackouts.

A spokesman said: “It was a serious matter because it shorted the electricity supply to the whole aquarium that threatened the lives of the other animals when water pumps ceased to work.

“It was on the third night that we found out that the octopus Otto was responsible for the chaos.

“We knew that he was bored as the aquarium is closed for winter, and at two feet, seven inches Otto had discovered he was big enough to swing onto the edge of his tank and shoot out the 2000 Watt spot light above him with a carefully directed jet of water.”

I’d vote for Otto, just to endorse his wanton and selfish chaos theory:

“Once we saw him juggling the hermit crabs in his tank, another time he threw stones against the glass damaging it. And from time to time he completely re-arranges his tank to make it suit his own taste better – much to the distress of his fellow tank inhabitants.”

[hey! I eschewed this sort of photo!]

National Exit Poll Data….First Takes…

76% of the country believes it’s off on the wrong track.

Bush’s approval rating is 27%

More than 60% say the economy is their top voting issue; 9 in ten say the economy is in bad shape; more than 80% are worried about their own condition next year.

Change voters made up 35% of the electorate; 30% wanted someone who shared their values.

One in ten voters are late-deciders..

And CNN tells us that of those who listed Iraq as a key issue, Obama’s leading two to one.

2. liberalcatnip - 4 November 2008

I guess it’s too late for McSurge to use Otto the Octopus as part of his schtick?

3. marisacat - 4 November 2008

Ben Smith seems to have some information on the “Panthers” supposedly intimidating people in Philadelphia…

[B]ut a reader sends over a link to clinch the deal: The Panther in question appears to be one King Shamir Shabazz — and he’s no Obama supporter.

“[Obama] is a puppet on a string. I don’t support no black man running for white politics. I will not vote for who will be the next slavemaster,” he told the Philadelphia Daily News a few days ago, one of the least crazy things he said amid some straightforwardly racist riffs. ::snip::

1. Change voters made up 35% of the electorate;

What does that mean? The rest still want Bush & Cheney?

“Change” – diluted to the point that it means nothing.

14. marisacat - 4 November 2008

They’ve got exit profiling on several battlegrounds, I picked one to snip:

PENNSYLVANIA – POLL CLOSE: 8:00 PM

*A quarter of voters in PA are white Catholics and they are splitting their votes. Kerry lost these voters to Bush by 48% to 52%.

*Seniors are one-fifth of the electorate and just over half are backing Obama. These voters narrowly backed Kerry by 51% to 48% in 2004.

*Obama is getting about two-thirds of the support of voters age 18-29. Kerry won 60% of them in 2004.

*Most voters in the Keystone state made up their minds long ago, but among those who decided in the last week (just over 1 in 10 voters), they are narrowly backing McCain by 51% to 47%.

15. Intermittent Bystander - 4 November 2008

I think Biden should adopt Otto as Vice-Presidential mascot, and whenever the former begins to vocalize his notions on the human condition or gender behavior, the latter should juggle his hermit crabs. Or just shoot out the spotlight and wrestle his microphone stand to the ground.

WAMC reported various northeast secretaries of state estimating voter turnouts of 70 to 90 per cent. At one polling place in Massachusetts, I think, the reporter said she couldn’t find a McCain supporter to quote.

16. liberalcatnip - 4 November 2008

I heard Coleman was having a hard time against Franken. I sure wouldn’t miss Coleman if he lost. He’s such a weasel.

IB thanks.. VT!

hmm via Ambinder

The Exits: Virginia

Courtesy of CBS News: In Virginia: Obama won among women and split the make vote; he got 9 in 10 black voters; they’re a little less than a quarter of the electorate. Among whites, nearly 60% are backing McCain — that’s eight points lower than John Kerry’s number among whites. Critically, more than 50% of Virginians said that McCain would continue President Bush’s policies. About 40% of black voters and 20% of white voters said that race was a factor in their choice.

In Indiana, white working class voters backed Obama by 3 points; Obama has a lead among women; he’s tied among men.

This just in… we will NOT be ditching lever machines after this year, after all. Turns out the company testing the replacement equipment lost its certification.

Bwahhh, this is just so classically NYS. It could just be our county though.

Here we go from the Albany TU: Voting machine approval hits delay (Oct 30, 08)

Denver, Colo.-based SysTest labs had been hired by the state Board of Elections to test the reliability of the ballot scanning devices that are candidates for approval in New York.

But the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, which helps oversee the testing, suspended SysTest from its program due to “numerous non-conformities” with the procedures and requirements called for by the federal government, according to the commission.

With SysTest off the job, the Board of Elections said they are on the verge of suspending New York’s certification effort.

“Once again we see how broken the electronic voting industry is,” said Bo Lipari, executive director at New Yorkers for Verified Voting, a watchdog group which is concerned about the reliability of some machines, including touch-screen devices.

This is the second time in two years a company has been removed from the testing program.

Another firm, CIBER, failed to get federal approval in 2006 and was taken off the state program.

Do we have to blame NYS for this one?

31. Intermittent Bystander - 4 November 2008

I think pink or powder blue means “leading” as returns come in.

Indiana is pink so far, too.

They’ve got Florida, NH, and NC powder blue.

32. NYCO - 4 November 2008

I’m going to be sorry to see the old machines go… for one thing, there’s nothing so terrifying to a child as stepping in one of those things. Seriously, during elementary school during “civics unit” when you had to see how one worked, wasn’t it just the most intimidating thing ever?

I heard from a recent transplant from California who had to vote for the first time on one of them today. Given the impatience of the poll workers, it was a traumatizing experience.

Question for people who don’t live in the Stone Age like I do: is it true that your voting stations don’t have curtains? I want my curtain. I don’t think I can do without my curtain.

33. Madman in the Marketplace - 4 November 2008

Speaking of the spreading silliness, take this from Salon: The end of the satirical industrial complex?

But has any of this smart political humor had an impact on the candidates, the election or our politics? It may be safe to argue that comedy changes the national mood, but can it change the national political climate in more fundamental ways?

“Plato and Aristotle feared humor’s power to undermine authority,” says Provine, who distinguishes between “laughing with” and “laughing at” types of humor. “‘Laughing with’ is bonding, and what we do with friends and like-minded folks. ‘Laughing at’ is directed to others, as in ridicule and jeering. Recently, Palin has been tapping the ‘laughing at’ mode toward [Barack] Obama.” Provine says ‘laugh with’ humor tends to be more effective, however. “Tina Fey may have a very real effect on the election outcome, and to a lesser extent, so will David Letterman, because their more gentle and devastating variety is more effective than the heavy-handed Palin sort. It may sway the uncommitted and influence the faithful.”

Comedian Will Durst, who appears regularly on Air America, CNN and National Public Radio, is less convinced of the satirical industrial complex’s electoral impact. “I think we’re good at satirizing all politicians. We always have been,” Durst told me by phone from California. “But I’m not sure how widespread our effect is. Everybody talks about how powerful ‘The Daily Show’ is, but it’s narrowcasting. I don’t know how many undecideds go there.”

Unfortunately, the Sampson-like potency of the satirical industrial complex may be headed for a long-overdue haircut when the Bush presidency comes to its merciful end — especially if an Obama administration is ushered in to replace it.

“SNL” writer James Downey, for one, predicts that Obama will be “a lot tougher” to satirize than other presidents and presidential candidates his show has been skewering for the past three decades. “The media is kind of madly in love with Obama,” Downey told a New Yorker Festival audience. “He is also such a smooth character that he doesn’t give you many handles.” (No such rule applied to Hillary Clinton, he noted. “Bill Clinton got a free pass What the hell is he talking about, or am I just imagining the Big Mac and Penis jokes that comedians are STILL telling??!?!?!), but we took it out on her.”)

“Obama would be tougher in the beginning for me because I’m a white guy,” agrees Durst, who added that the lone upside of a John McCain victory next month is that Palin would be like “methadone” for comedians who otherwise would have to go cold turkey when Bush is gone. “In front of white liberal audiences — which is what most comedy clubs are, even in red states, it’s always that blue-state element — if I try doing race jokes about Obama you can hear the sphincters tighten up faster than lug nuts on a ’57 Ford. Until I can say ‘President Homey’ and get away with it, it’s going to be a little tougher.”

An Obama era almost certainly promises to be less funny — at least in terms of satire. So enjoy Tina Fey’s Palin parodies while they last.

34. Intermittent Bystander - 4 November 2008

NBC projecting PA for Obama.

35. NYCO - 4 November 2008

Do we have to blame NYS for this one?

No, only for the years of delay…

However, aside from the disabled-accessibility issue: how problematic are these machines really? Yes, they are old, but have there ever been any large-scale voting problems in New York? Weren’t these machines, at one point in the mists of history, considered an improvement over paper ballots, punch cards and the like?

36. marisacat - 4 November 2008

I’m sure Colbert can figure something out. I don’t think Colbert is as reverent (and possibly not quite as lefty as people may think he is).

The Daily Show, I think, is going to go out of business… I was watching the other day and they had this utterly limp segment on community organizers. (Now, I like community organizers…) It was uncomfortably rah rah; not funny.

8. Entire election thrown into chaos when it’s alleged that thousands of voters *appeared* to throw ballots into box but actually just hid them behind their backs.

5. “Exit Polling” just a fancy name for butt sniffing.

43. Intermittent Bystander - 4 November 2008

Hopefully the Daily Show would loosen up, post-election. Agree about Colbert.

I think comedians have to sign an oath to say shit like that, when pressed. My friend in the Assembly who predicted Palin’s honeymoon would get zotzed by the satirists was right.

44. liberalcatnip - 4 November 2008

40. Nickles and dimes?

As in – that’s all they have left in the bank? 🙂

Oh, here we go with Tweety calling Howard Dean “John the Baptist”…

I might not get MSNBC at the new place. I’m not sure if that’s a positive or a negative.

45. NYCO - 4 November 2008

In fact, having a President Obama gives Colbert the perfect setup for his shtick. Jon Stewart, notsomuch.

46. Intermittent Bystander - 4 November 2008

41 – Outstanding!

By the way, in the wild fox youtube research I did the other day, I learned that they (like goats) enjoy jumping on people’s backyard trampolines.

But really, who doesn’t?

47. NYCO - 4 November 2008

Oh, here we go with Tweety calling Howard Dean “John the Baptist”…

Bad analogy. John the Baptist had the good taste to get his head cut off. He did not, in fact, become a house eunuch for Salome.

Though, seriously, there’s no way Howard could have been permitted to win (and he wasn’t) – he would have done something meaningful about health care. And oh those sparkling “gaffes.” I still do miss them.

In a sense maybe I can understand the Cult of the Sacred Obama if I look back at myself and squint really hard, then blow it up 500 times. But I sure ain’t in that place now.

48. Intermittent Bystander - 4 November 2008

My problem with Colbert is that 83% of the time (in the spirit of the evening) he’s at least as grating as the people he’s sending up.

ugh I hate ours… we have these little standing “tables” about mid chest height for someone like me (5 ‘) with three sides of white plastic with flags imprinted on them. that’s it. we fill out the Optik Scan type of form, fill in the little oval, like on SAT tests… then you put the voting form in the machine “reader” yourself.

We had teh big old machines til sometime in the late 70s or so. I did not mind them as I knew how to vote in that system, we had had them forever.

69. Madman in the Marketplace - 4 November 2008

I use to love the tactile nature of those old machines, the loud noises and the way the lever would resist at first, a kind of “are you SURE” before you registered your votes. We have the scantron paper sheets here too, and it just isn’t as romantic.

Just found this at After Downing Street: Cindy Sheehan Faring Well in Exit Polls, Dems Harassing Sheehan Volunteers

We’ve been all over the city at the polls since 7am this morning. We have 12 teams on the streets getting out the vote in CA-8 and we’ve been cruising all over the city in the Cindy mobile talking to voters everywhere.

Already four of our teams have been harassed by poll workers and police and it’s barely past noon. We are complying with all rules and regs, making sure that we are outside of the 100 ft. marker set by the Dept of Elections – but that’s not stopping them from trying to keep us away from the voters. Four times in precincts that favor Cindy, workers from the Department of Elections have come out mid-day and recalculated the distance to keep us across the street and far away from people going in to vote. In one instance a city worker actually blocked the poll entrance with a city truck.

In each of these incidents the police have also been called – it seems like someone is working hard to find everyway way they can to intimidate our volunteers. We won’t be moved!!!!

We’ve also had two reports of polls in progressive neighborhoods where voters have been turned away because they ran out of ballots and had problems with the voting machines. We have reported both of these incidents to the Department of Elections.

We’re keeping a close eye on the process.

But here’s the amazing news: early exits polls have already showed us at 40% and at many precincts our numbers are dead even with Pelosi.

Stay in touch. Stay strong!

78. Intermittent Bystander - 4 November 2008

dark side of the moon when it comes to electoral relevance

I’ve got you beat, NYCO! A foreign-born New Yorker! But Thanks for Mrs. Plotz! Looks exactly like I remember.

Paterson just on NBC. He is a strange miracle, Marisa. (Thanks for the one-night stand, Eliot! . . . coulda been worse!)

It’s a little like the movie Being There, listening to him speak. Mind you, my friend in the Assembly sez he sometimes pisses off the political pros with the non-stop jokes.

Very curious to see what happens with Treadwell’s assault on Gillibrand’s freshman tenure in the HOuse. MOst expensive congressional race in the country, I heard today, and indeed, the ads have been constant and fierce.

79. Intermittent Bystander - 4 November 2008

Almost forgot – Local news showed NYC footage earlier of Spitzer and wife lined up on the street to vote. Didn’t look too comfy with the camera! But they threw him a softball – ever seen anything like this before?

The relief was visible. No, no, no. . . . Not in 14-15 years . . . this is really something.

NBC just projected OH for O, LA for McC.

80. Intermittent Bystander - 4 November 2008

81. marisacat - 4 November 2008

NYCO

I saw a poll at RCP for NYS for Ob… he was ahead by a whopping 36 pts.

That’s mroe than CA….he is around 24 pts ahead here in polling.

The next move, I think pretty obviously, will be to resuscitate the move to break our winner take all rule. CA = 55 EV.

82. marisacat - 4 November 2008

BTW, polls here are open for another hour and a half. Til 8 PM PT…. they still show lines, from helicopter, going around the block at City Hall to vote.

I ahve to say I have reached the end of making election day some super bowl for democracy. Pumping up ”the lines” and ”the waits’. Get a better system.

And our ballot is long. 22 issues, bonds props for the city 12 for the state, plus congress, state offices, SF has supes up for election, judges, community college board on and on and on it goes.

So far, Gillibrand leading 66 to 34, in very early returns.

87. marisacat - 4 November 2008

The way they were talking about Johnson on ABC I thought he had lost. I had been in the kitchen with a different channel on.. and they were so mournful when I got back.

So… he won? I gather? There was some slobbery stuff about all the the “medical” help and support and “the money” (whatever that meant) that Teddy and Bob Casey had extended to him. W/R/T the stroke.

Geesh.

MSNBC’s First Read:

From NBC’s Mike Viqueira

Three House Democratic sources confirmed Rep. Rahm Emanuel has been offered a Chief of Staff job with an Obama White House and is currently “agonizing” over whether to take the job.

106. Madman in the Marketplace - 4 November 2008

Ouch:

U.S. Rep. Chris Shays conceded defeat about 9:45 p.m. and made an appeal to his colleagues in Congress to hire members of his staff.

“My two year contract has not been renewed,” Shays said.

Shays said he was proud that his last campaign eschewed negative ads.

“Tonight, we lost an election, but we didn’t lose our souls,” his wife, Betsi, told the crowd at the Norwalk Inn.

Shays, a 21-year incumbent, held off tough challenges in 2006 and 2005, but this year the Obama wave appeared to be taking a toll.

With 40 percent of the district’s precincts reporting, Himes was ahead 61 percent to Shays’ 39 percent, according to unofficial results.

Bridgeport, Shays’ hometown, appeared to be going overwhelmingly for Himes. With 12 of 25 precincts reporting, Himes is ahead 80 percent to 19 percent in Bridgeport.

Early returns also had Norwalk and Stamford leaning toward Himes by nine points.

Massachusetts votes to retain income tax and

Massachusetts voters today approved a ballot initiative to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, making getting caught with less than an ounce of pot punishable by a civil fine of $100. The change in the law means someone found carrying as many as dozens of marijuana cigarettes will no longer be reported to the state’s criminal history board.

“The people were ahead of the politicians on this issue; they recognize and want a more sensible approach to our marijuana policy,” said Whitney Taylor, chairwoman of the Committee for Sensible Marijuana Policy, which campaigned for the ballot initiative. “They want to focus our limited law enforcement resources on serious and violent crimes. They recognize under the new law that the punishment will fit the offense.”

The battle on the R side of the big messy bed begins (no link, from Ambinder, full text):

The precriminations begin…

“Voters did not reject conservatism,” Richard A. Viguerie, the Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, said. “They rejected Big Government Republicanism in all its forms, including the Bush administration and the Republican leadership in Congress.” The McCain campaign, Viguerie said, “represented many things Americans do not like about politics. Senator McCain spent more than a quarter-century in Washington as a ‘moderate’ and ‘insider,’ and his campaign was run by longtime Washington insiders and lobbyists for Big Government.” “This disastrous defeat can and will be laid at the feet of the Big Government corporate Republicans, who abandoned the Reagan Coalition, massively expanded government, and ignored the needs and values of regular, grassroots Americans. They protected Wall Street and K Street and forgot about Main Street.”

Except Henry V died of dysentery midway through his conquest of France, leaving the empire to his baby son, who was controlled by evil regents who eventually caused the War of the Roses…

Of course they had to ruin Paterson’s appearance by putting moldy Giuliani on next to him. Whose relevance to state and national politics is zero.

177. Madman in the Marketplace - 4 November 2008

Off topic, but some possibly good news:

Over the objections of television broadcasters and other groups, federal regulators set aside a disputed slice of radio spectrum for public use on Tuesday, hoping it would lead to low-cost, high-speed Internet access and new wireless devices.

The Federal Communications Commission voted 5 to 0 to approve the new use for the unlicensed frequencies, known as white spaces.

A coalition of powerful groups, including broadcasters, Broadway theater producers and sports franchises, hoped to derail or delay the decision. They have argued that their own transmissions — whether from television signals or from wireless microphones used in live music performances — could face interference from new devices that use the white spaces.

But F.C.C. commissioners said in a public meeting on Tuesday that they were confident that enough testing had been done to assure them that interference was not a major risk.

“It’s fair to say few other engineering analyses at the F.C.C. have been as lengthy and open,” said Michael J. Copps, a commissioner.

Echoing the views of other commissioners, he added that the measure could lead to development of a new generation of devices that use the spectrum to provide Internet access.

Commissioners said such access could be more reliable than Wi-Fi, which also uses unlicensed frequencies but does not reach as far.

That view has been heralded by technology companies, like Google, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft, which will benefit from the spread of Internet access.

“Some have called this Wi-Fi on steroids,” Mr. Copps said. “I hope they’re correct.”
