as in, Mandate Their Asses…
More than 250 in the House (make Nancy happy!), def 60 in the Senate (could be edgy, some, a couple, of the nearly dead will scrape in… I think) and more than a 5 pt spread for Obama. As much as possible.
Sock it to them!
^^^^^
Other than that, a local tidbit, I am getting robocalls on all sides of “8”, SS Marriage. AND both sides are using audio of Ob on “civil unions”, “Prop 8”, “Gay Marriage”, tampering with “the constitution” (that would be our state constitution, but he is vague) and so on.
He ended up servicing all sides with quotes. Way to go! (and it could be a harbinger)
Sock it to them!
Last, specifically for distraction (a word overused by the Ob camp!), I had assumed this got widespread coverage end of last week, but I am gathering it did not… There is an absence of good photos of Otto which may be one reason. Or, perhaps, that juggling of the crabs in his tank is just too revealing a metaphor.
The short-circuit had baffled electricians as well as staff at the Sea Star Aquarium in Coburg, Germany, who decided to take shifts sleeping on the floor to find out what caused the mysterious blackouts.
A spokesman said: “It was a serious matter because it shorted the electricity supply to the whole aquarium that threatened the lives of the other animals when water pumps ceased to work.
“It was on the third night that we found out that the octopus Otto was responsible for the chaos.
“We knew that he was bored as the aquarium is closed for winter, and at two feet, seven inches Otto had discovered he was big enough to swing onto the edge of his tank and shoot out the 2000 Watt spot light above him with a carefully directed jet of water.”
I’d vote for Otto, just to endorse his wanton and selfish chaos theory:
“Once we saw him juggling the hermit crabs in his tank, another time he threw stones against the glass damaging it. And from time to time he completely re-arranges his tank to make it suit his own taste better – much to the distress of his fellow tank inhabitants.”

[hey! I eschewed this sort of photo!]
fwiw after a teaser posted a ibt ago, this just went up at Ambinder (full text)
I guess it’s too late for McSurge to use Otto the Octopus as part of his schtick?
Ben Smith seems to have some information on the “Panthers” supposedly intimidating people in Philadelphia…
1. Change voters made up 35% of the electorate;
What does that mean? The rest still want Bush & Cheney?
“Change” – diluted to the point that it means nothing.
2
but is he licensed to be an octopus? Or a juggler? Or an electrician?
Those would be the weighty issues raised, operatives would hunt the seas for his files…
5. And he’d have to hire a publicist…
LOL from Angry Arab:
6
the Telegraph was so cheeky, they cheerfully added a line to a pic of theirs in the US elections gallery… of Joe the Plumber whispering in Meghan McCain’s ear:
“the reason Joe the Plumber is hanging around”.
LOL
gah FP of the Chicago Trib “The Obama Faithful gather in Grant Park” live vid.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/
8. “the reason Joe the Plumber is hanging around”.
Now there’s a match made in…ewww…
9. Did you see the really think sheet of bullet-proof glass in front of the podium? They showed it on Canadian teevee this morning. You probably couldn’t drive a tank through it.
And meanwhile, the McSurge camp will be waiting it out in some motel bar with lounge lizard music somewhere…?
Arizona Biltmore… is where they are…
HA! I laughed when I read this… cuz we did nto know, did we?

Senate numbers we don’t believe at all (because the Coleman number is absurd):

Coleman down 12
McConnell up 2
Chambliss up 3
Dole down 52-43
They’ve got exit profiling on several battlegrounds, I picked one to snip:
PENNSYLVANIA – POLL CLOSE: 8:00 PM
*A quarter of voters in PA are white Catholics and they are splitting their votes. Kerry lost these voters to Bush by 48% to 52%.
*Seniors are one-fifth of the electorate and just over half are backing Obama. These voters narrowly backed Kerry by 51% to 48% in 2004.
*Obama is getting about two-thirds of the support of voters age 18-29. Kerry won 60% of them in 2004.
*Most voters in the Keystone state made up their minds long ago, but among those who decided in the last week (just over 1 in 10 voters), they are narrowly backing McCain by 51% to 47%.
I think Biden should adopt Otto as Vice-Presidential mascot, and whenever the former begins to vocalize his notions on the human condition or gender behavior, the latter should juggle his hermit crabs. Or just shoot out the spotlight and wrestle his microphone stand to the ground.
WAMC reported various northeast secretaries of state estimating voter turnouts of 70 to 90 per cent. At one polling place in Massachusetts, I think, the reporter said she couldn’t find a McCain supporter to quote.
I heard Coleman was having a hard time against Franken. I sure wouldn’t miss Coleman if he lost. He’s such a weasel.
Did MSNBC just call Kentucky for McSurgery?
hmm they say Indiana and VA too close to call right now (they just closed)
BUT McCain won KY and Ob won… Maine I think. NE state. my mind drifted, what can I say.
Vermont.
I see KO and Tweety have been reunited and there’s already been some tension between them – Tweety saying that Obama flip-flopped on public financing – KO saying he has the documents that proves he didn’t. Then they cut to commercial. lol
In other news, Tim Russert is still dead!
15. rofl
Otto had better demand a raise if he takes that job.
Will Otto have to gird his loins?
22 – Yes, but he’ll still have seven arms free for flag-waving and/or corrective podium mayhem!
21 – Maybe the Palins could handle the seafood contract for Otto’s vice-presidential perks. Consolation prize!
(Somebody sent me an e-mail today, titled “Meanwhile, on the other side of the Bering Straits,” with a photo of Putin holding binoculars, and a cartoon bubble saying “God, those curtains are awful.”)
IB thanks.. VT!
hmm via Ambinder
I got a huge kick out of Otto.. I wish there were more photos… the visuals of him juggling the sand crabs just makes me laugh.
This just in… we will NOT be ditching lever machines after this year, after all. Turns out the company testing the replacement equipment lost its certification.
Bwahhh, this is just so classically NYS. It could just be our county though.
25 – Absolutely! The obsessive redecorating is a crack-up too.
Come on over to my house, Otto! I could use a hand (or 8) to spruce up the place!
NYCO – Couldn’t find a quick answer, but it might be found somewhere in here: NYS Board of Elections.
ummm
Does NYT on the FP have VA in the McC column? I am going byt red blue coloration … VA is red with 56%
Here we go from the Albany TU: Voting machine approval hits delay (Oct 30, 08)
Do we have to blame NYS for this one?
I think pink or powder blue means “leading” as returns come in.
Indiana is pink so far, too.
They’ve got Florida, NH, and NC powder blue.
I’m going to be sorry to see the old machines go… for one thing, there’s nothing so terrifying to a child as stepping in one of those things. Seriously, during elementary school during “civics unit” when you had to see how one worked, wasn’t it just the most intimidating thing ever?
I heard from a recent transplant from California who had to vote for the first time on one of them today. Given the impatience of the poll workers, it was a traumatizing experience.
Question for people who don’t live in the Stone Age like I do: is it true that your voting stations don’t have curtains? I want my curtain. I don’t think I can do without my curtain.
Speaking of the spreading silliness, take this from Salon: The end of the satirical industrial complex?
NBC projecting PA for Obama.
Do we have to blame NYS for this one?
No, only for the years of delay…
However, aside from the disabled-accessibility issue: how problematic are these machines really? Yes, they are old, but have there ever been any large-scale voting problems in New York? Weren’t these machines, at one point in the mists of history, considered an improvement over paper ballots, punch cards and the like?
NBC calls PA for Obama
NH for Obama Illinois, CT Maine
NJ Wash DC OK stays red for McC, TENN for McC…
NH too.
Enjoy Oklahoma, Johnny!
34 – I’ve always heard that they’re quaint and creaky, but they work.
“SNL” writer James Downey, for one, predicts that Obama will be “a lot tougher” to satirize than other presidents and presidential candidates his show has been skewering for the past three decades.
I’m sure Colbert can figure something out. I don’t think Colbert is as reverent (and possibly not quite as lefty as people may think he is).
The Daily Show, I think, is going to go out of business… I was watching the other day and they had this utterly limp segment on community organizers. (Now, I like community organizers…) It was uncomfortably rah rah; not funny.
Please GOD no Russert videos!
4 – What does that mean?
Nickles and dimes?
If the Election Was Run by Dogs
Hopefully the Daily Show would loosen up, post-election. Agree about Colbert.
“I think we’re good at satirizing all politicians. We always have been,” Durst told me by phone from California. “But I’m not sure how widespread our effect is. Everybody talks about how powerful ‘The Daily Show’ is, but it’s narrowcasting. I don’t know how many undecideds go there.”
I think comedians have to sign an oath to say shit like that, when pressed. My friend in the Assembly who predicted Palin’s honeymoon would get zotzed by the satirists was right.
40. Nickles and dimes?
As in – that’s all they have left in the bank? 🙂
Oh, here we go with Tweety calling Howard Dean “John the Baptist”…
I might not get MSNBC at the new place. I’m not sure if that’s a positive or a negative.
In fact, having a President Obama gives Colbert the perfect setup for his shtick. Jon Stewart, notsomuch.
41 – Outstanding!
By the way, in the wild fox youtube research I did the other day, I learned that they (like goats) enjoy jumping on people’s backyard trampolines.
But really, who doesn’t?
🙂
Oh, here we go with Tweety calling Howard Dean “John the Baptist”…
Bad analogy. John the Baptist had the good taste to get his head cut off. He did not, in fact, become a house eunuch for Salome.
Though, seriously, there’s no way Howard could have been permitted to win (and he wasn’t) – he would have done something meaningful about health care. And oh those sparkling “gaffes.” I still do miss them.
In a sense maybe I can understand the Cult of the Sacred Obama if I look back at myself and squint really hard, then blow it up 500 times. But I sure ain’t in that place now.
My problem with Colbert is that 83% of the time (in the spirit of the evening) he’s at least as grating as the people he’s sending up.
Question for people who don’t live in the Stone Age like I do: is it true that your voting stations don’t have curtains? I want my curtain. I don’t think I can do without my curtain. — NYCO
ugh I hate ours… we have these little standing “tables” about mid chest height for someone like me (5 ‘) with three sides of white plastic with flags imprinted on them. that’s it. we fill out the Optik Scan type of form, fill in the little oval, like on SAT tests… then you put the voting form in the machine “reader” yourself.
We had teh big old machines til sometime in the late 70s or so. I did not mind them as I knew how to vote in that system, we had had them forever.
Shaheen won in NH…
Ohio is way powder blue now at the NYT.
Saratoga Springs school district mock election was a landslide: O won 3800 to 1800, with Nader getting 40.
Jon Stewart, notsomuch.
Even if he/they don’t go after Teh One, there is always Reid, Pelosi and the rest of the Keystone Kops in Congress.
Hagen won in NC… yay! Liddy Dole goes down… 😉
NBC sez Lizzy Dole going down!
Oh, good news on Hagen!
55 – that brought up an ugly, unwanted image of her hubby’s old viagra ads.
SORRY!
Sessions still in. Inhofe too.
We have tables with 3-sided cardboard dealies. I can’t even remember if there’s anything printed on them.
And we have pencils and pieces of paper….that we mark with an X…and stuff in a box…and then we go home. It’s all quite boring.
Sununu’s toast as well.
57 – Had the same thought after I hit “say it.” Glad Marisa got there first!
Here’s some eyewash: Fox on trampoline!
58 – ugh, I hate those fuckers, but I wouldn’t expect anything else from the voters that evolution left behind in their respective states.
And we have pencils and pieces of paper….that we mark with an X…and stuff in a box…and then we go home. It’s all quite boring.
No mighty red lever of democracy? No clunk? No ka-ching?
how can it be democracy without a ka-ching?
And we have pencils and pieces of paper….that we mark with an X…and stuff in a box…and then we go home. It’s all quite boring.
No bragging!
maybe Otto and the fox could put an act together
OK one more thing about lever machines and then I’ll shut up:
This informative instructional video from Mrs. Plotz, your (un)friendly high-school homeroom teacher.
(wow, I never wrote in a candidate before and had no idea that’s how you did it. It’s freaky!)
Surf and turf misbehavior!
OH I forgot about Dole’s Viagra commercials.
I did say somethng about reveling in Liddy’s deflating air pumped facial cheeks the other day.. It’s been obvious for years…
I use to love the tactile nature of those old machines, the loud noises and the way the lever would resist at first, a kind of “are you SURE” before you registered your votes. We have the scantron paper sheets here too, and it just isn’t as romantic.
Just found this at After Downing Street: Cindy Sheehan Faring Well in Exit Polls, Dems Harassing Sheehan Volunteers
ABC is saying AA turnout is up just 2%
Latino running flat… and youth (did nt specifiy the age perameters, which would matter) also running flat.
Kind of early… interesting to see what holds up.
LOL Of course first tiem voters is surely waaaaaay up right?
69
thanks fro that on Sheehan… 😉
70. Hm. Not expecting that kind of statistic. I’m on the dark side of the moon when it comes to electoral relevance and it seemed we had a very fine turnout this year.
polls about to close in NY. Waiting for confirmation of Dan Maffei win in NY-25…
No ka-chings for me and the longest I’ve ever stood in line was 5 minutes.
**supper break**
(pork loin roast made by my roomie…mmm…I’m trying to figure out how to gird it…maybe the baby potatoes will help)
McConnell held on in KY
Wow, Obama projected to take NYS at 73%. Last time we had such a huge percentage for a winner, it was Eliot Spitzer.
Oops
oh wait, that’s only 12 precincts reporting. Sorry.
dark side of the moon when it comes to electoral relevance
I’ve got you beat, NYCO! A foreign-born New Yorker! But Thanks for Mrs. Plotz! Looks exactly like I remember.
Paterson just on NBC. He is a strange miracle, Marisa. (Thanks for the one-night stand, Eliot! . . . coulda been worse!)
It’s a little like the movie Being There, listening to him speak. Mind you, my friend in the Assembly sez he sometimes pisses off the political pros with the non-stop jokes.
Very curious to see what happens with Treadwell’s assault on Gillibrand’s freshman tenure in the HOuse. MOst expensive congressional race in the country, I heard today, and indeed, the ads have been constant and fierce.
Almost forgot – Local news showed NYC footage earlier of Spitzer and wife lined up on the street to vote. Didn’t look too comfy with the camera! But they threw him a softball – ever seen anything like this before?
The relief was visible. No, no, no. . . . Not in 14-15 years . . . this is really something.
NBC just projected OH for O, LA for McC.
200 to 85 electoral.
NM now in for Obama . . .
NYCO
I saw a poll at RCP for NYS for Ob… he was ahead by a whopping 36 pts.
That’s mroe than CA….he is around 24 pts ahead here in polling.
The next move, I think pretty obviously, will be to resuscitate the move to break our winner take all rule. CA = 55 EV.
BTW, polls here are open for another hour and a half. Til 8 PM PT…. they still show lines, from helicopter, going around the block at City Hall to vote.
I ahve to say I have reached the end of making election day some super bowl for democracy. Pumping up ”the lines” and ”the waits’. Get a better system.
And our ballot is long. 22 issues, bonds props for the city 12 for the state, plus congress, state offices, SF has supes up for election, judges, community college board on and on and on it goes.
Johnny’s footpath to the prez is lookin gloomy, them NBC experts is saying.
Assume Calif, Oregon, and Washington for Obama . . .
NBC pundit’s vocal tones sounding gloomy for the invite-only friends at the Biltmore Hotel. “Razor thin” in Virginia, and O won Richmond suburbs.
75 – Boo!
MSNBC says that Johnson from SD will be wheeled back into office.
NY closes at 9 pm . . . about 40 minutes ago.
So far, Gillibrand leading 66 to 34, in very early returns.
The way they were talking about Johnson on ABC I thought he had lost. I had been in the kitchen with a different channel on.. and they were so mournful when I got back.
So… he won? I gather? There was some slobbery stuff about all the the “medical” help and support and “the money” (whatever that meant) that Teddy and Bob Casey had extended to him. W/R/T the stroke.
Geesh.
I think it pretty much sucks (electorally) to be on either coast, unless you’re in that precious paradise, Florida.
51 to 48 for O, per the New YOrk Times . . . with 61% reporting.
Virginia still quite the squeaker, with 76% returns. McC’s still got a grip on the short hairs, at 50 to 49.
I think they are saying that both Udalls have won or are expected to win. (think it is CO and NM) I had not managed to remember the family is Mormon. And so are both of them.
Apparently Gordon Smith is another Udall cousin, in OR, but R.
Tejas – McCain
Whoa, sounds like Massachusetts is winning a prop to do with pot decriminalization . . . and (also, too) dog racing’s looking up there, too.
Iowa – Obamalama according to MSNBC
Utah – McSurge
207-129
McCain gets Utah and Texas. Obama gets Iowa.
Montana, too close.
87 – Roll out the incumbents! We’ll have a barrel of fun . . .
Update from the Biltmore . . . unsourced quotes about “valiant effort” in “historically difficult times.”
Aw shucks, we tried . . . enter the refrain!
Shays is toast? Good. He creeped me out.
/end of insightful political commentary
Chris Shays went down.. “last standing R in the NE” — and I can’t say I am sorry. What a fucking DRIP.
96
he was creepy. The drippiest pandering.. ugh.
NBC saying there was a lot of ticket splitting in VA, rural VA voted McC for P and Warner for the senate.
wow, shays lost?
Mahoney and his penis lost in FL.
Virginia, Indiana and Florida are running amazingly close.
Murtha goes back in. Bet that was a cliffhanger…
100. Mahoney and his penis lost in FL.
lol…another dick bites the dust.
MSNBC is of course taking all of this as a sign that we are officially post-racial, or something. Now that we’ve got THAT out of the way, can we start the class war now?
MSNBC’s First Read:
From NBC’s Mike Viqueira
Three House Democratic sources confirmed Rep. Rahm Emanuel has been offered a Chief of Staff job with an Obama White House and is currently “agonizing” over whether to take the job.
Ouch:
Massachusetts votes to retain income tax and
They’re going to start singing Kumbaya on MSNBC any minute now.
Gillibrand wins. (Reminder: Gillibrand had put away the odious NY Rep John Sweeney last round.)
107 – Oh, that’s good news. The militarization of drug policy really needs to end.
If your home town runs hard against you (Shays) soemthing is very very wrong.
One of the things on one of our ballot measures that involve drugs, criminsalisation, courts and PRISONS (Guard Lobby) also is trying to move marijuana to the lowest, “infraction”, which would be below where ti si now, misdemeanor, unless they can hang you with cultivation and distribution, I mean.
Squeaker between Franken and Coleman – just 3% divides them. It’s not called yet.
The battle on the R side of the big messy bed begins (no link, from Ambinder, full text):
S Dakota defeated the anti-abortion measure on the ballot but McSurge took the state.
I was on Viguerie’s mailing list for a while – for some unknown reason.
Oh Good News on the SD bill! It had some hidden nightmares iirc..Just temembered what it was, you have to surrender DNA under that bill, as part of an abortion..(think that is what moiv told me)
I am too superstitious to say anything about 4 (notification) and 8 (SSM)
**
Pelosi accepts the laurels at the Roman Forum. on the radio KGO
wow thin as can be: (from The page)
Florida
With 78% of the vote in: Obama 51%, McCain 48.3%
Virginia
With 90% of the vote in: Obama 50.3%, McCain 48.7%
North Carolina
With 83% of the vote in: Obama 49.8%, McCain 49.6%
CNN has Will.I.Am via hologram from the Chicago crowd on the set. How bizarre.
Paterson was on NBC, comparing Obama to… Henry V. (“He will grow into the job…”)
Well that’s one I haven’t heard before!
Except Henry V died of dysentery midway through his conquest of France, leaving the empire to his baby son, who was controlled by evil regents who eventually caused the War of the Roses…
Of course they had to ruin Paterson’s appearance by putting moldy Giuliani on next to him. Whose relevance to state and national politics is zero.

CNN: Obama takes VA
NBC declares for Obama…
CNN projects Obama as prez.
My cats are awakened by the loud Chicago crowds oh the teevee. Obamacat says, “where are my treats??”
MSNBC is showing cheering crowds all over the place, kids at Spellman college crying.
Giuliani didn’t squelch Paterson zen on local news here. Sounded like the usual indistinguishable natter here.
Bumped into Rudy outside a pricy but good Italian restaurant (for a family birthday dinner) in Saratoga, in late August. One of my nephews immediately went over to introduce self and shake his hand, in inimitable irrepressible way. Just for the laughs, I gather. If I’m not mistaken, there was another chuckle outside the urinal. (Piss off, Rudy! I advised nephew.)
NBC projecting O win, now?
126 – Yes, we meow!?
Brokaw is reverentially murmuring lines from obama keynote speech of 2004.
They just love the nationalistic lines from that… “awesome god” and the boy scout stuff………………..
gawd, Gergen is fighting back tears on CNN.
Phuckin phew.
I’ve been tearing up about people cryin’ for days.
John Lewis is on to … oh do something.

Yes, we nap!

McCain is reportedly conceding already.
McCain called Obama and conceded.
Phew 2!
136 – I’m glad I won’t have to hear that VOICE every day … at least until she tries to run in ’12.
KO really needs to STFU.
139. You betcha!
I don’t know if I’ll be able to stand the weeks of upcoming gushing. I KNOW this is an important historical moment but, once again, his election doesn’t right centuries of wrongs and he’s not MLK. Suddenly, he’s not post-racial anymore, I guess.
As Sharpton said the other day, he’s half-white as well and the black community will have to “share” him with everybody.
Here is good news:
“‘Hussein’ is pretty much like ‘Delano’ or ‘Fitzgerald’ or ‘Baines’ or ‘Jefferson’ now, wouldn’t ya say?”
30 – Brokaw’s got a hard-on for vets as bad as Tweety, I decided earlier tonight. He just wears it like Brooks, in the pleated trou.
Oops. Was that rude?
Fertilized egg = person goes down in Colorado
McCain is giving a really decent speech. Good for him.
I think I just heard the RW blogosphere explode.
Biden-McCain man-love endures!
oh Brokaw is just a mass and mess of cliches. That “greatest generation” stuff was treacly pot boiler. And masses just slurped it up…
MIlwaukee actually voted to require mandatory sick day be provided by employers for their workers.
Definite tilt to the left in a lot of these local referendums so far.
I hope things go well out in CA, esp. w/ parental notification and killing Prop 8.
well 10% of the vote is in and Yes on 8 is leading… but only just that much of it counted.
We’ll see.. there was cross over between 8 and 4, in supporters of each side…
RCP – Donks pick up CO Senate seat, plus 5 now.

hmm I think it is a toss up at best.
he absolutely has a mandate tho. And congress too.
Much talk I caught tonight of Gates staying..
You’re right.. I had jsut pulled up the returns page…
No mention.
But it will get out. I live in SUCH A LIBERAL PLACE… ahahahah.
Of course, the idiot in chief has two months to do some serious damage. All of the “wise” men on CNN are droning on about how he has to run to the center.

This sounds like his standard stump speech. Underwhelming.
He’s quoting Nixon? Ugh.
Off topic, but some possibly good news:
How did he know I was listening from my palace?
It’s a pretty horrible speech, and pretty center-right. Now he’s threatening other countries.
Ugh.
