Quite white… 23 July 2009

Posted by marisacat in Divertissements.

A rare white turtle which was found at the riverside of Yellow River in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. The turtle weighs about 6.5 kg and is 40 cm long

I did not find much on the white turtle, not even a press attribution for the photographs, other than it appeared in the Photos of the Day at the Telegraph, so I suppose the pictures were just taken by whomever, whereever s/he is…

just this from The London Paper, full text:

IT MAY look more like your Christmas turkey just before it goes into the oven, but this milky white creature is actually a rare white turtle.

The creature, whose creamy colour is offset by a few hints of pink, was discovered by the bank of the Yellow River in Henan province, China.

White turtles have a special place in Chinese culture, as the classic novel Journey from the West features an entity from Heaven who is turned into one of the animals after performing ill deeds.

However, unlike the character in the tale, this white turtle won’t be ferrying any people across rivers: it is just 40cm long and weighs only 6.5kg.

Still, it’s a shell of a story.

But he caught my eye, as I thought of him (or her) just lazing along by the Yellow River, ’til found.  And then, no longer on his own, by the river banks.

Well now. Good Morning!
For a moment there, I thought that pic was

given the Big News Perp Walk here in Jersey today…

AP via HuffPo

FBI agents are sweeping across northern New Jersey Thursday, making arrests in what reportedly is described as a major corruption probe.

WNBC-TV in New York reported and showed images of the mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus being taken into FBI headquarters in Newark. The station also showed rabbis being taken into custody.

Radio station New Jersey 101.5 FM reports the sweeps are taking place in Hudson, Bergen, Monmouth and Ocean counties.

LMAO. Think that pic above and ya got the idea.
Theyyyyyyy’re “‘Sweeeping !” – no mere light dusting-
The NYT expounds on the Insurance Brokerage fraud case that began in the poor as dirt Pleasantville School District next to A.C.

TRENTON, Sept. 6 — Eleven current or former public officials, including two members of the State Assembly, were charged Thursday with taking thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for promising municipal business to undercover officers posing as insurance brokers in the latest federal probe into New Jersey’s rampant political corruption.

The officials, and a man affiliated with one of them, were rounded up by agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation early Thursday morning and appeared before a judge in Federal District Court here by afternoon. The arrests culminated an 18-month investigation in which an undercover agent and cooperating witnesses posed as insurance brokers and traded wads of cash ranging from $1,500 to $17,500 for assurances of votes on school boards and city councils.

The investigation initially focused on the Pleasantville Board of Education, which runs a tiny, impoverished school district near Atlantic City. With 13 superintendents in the last 10 years, the district has been plagued by turmoil and is now working with a state-appointed monitor.

But then, unexpectedly, Pleasantville officials led federal investigators on what Christopher J. Christie, the United States attorney for New Jersey, described at a news conference here as a “corruption tour” of New Jersey by referring the fake insurers to other parts of the state.

How’d they do it?

Covert recordings were apparently an integral part of the investigation, as the criminal complaints quote or paraphrase each official — some at length — about what they were willing to do to help the fake company, what they expected in return and the importance of keeping the arrangements hush.

For instance, Reid allegedly coached a cooperating witness on how to surreptitiously accept bribes, warning him not to “let a lot of people in the kitchen” and adding, “You need a buffer or something,” according to the criminal complaint.

LOL. Meet Rabbi “Buffer” So-and-So and Rabbi Him-Too….

N.J. rabbis arrested in corruption probe

July 23, 2009

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Several rabbis reportedly were arrested as part of a public corruption and international money-laundering investigation in New Jersey.

According to media reports, among the 30 arrests made Thursday morning by the FBI were the mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus, the deputy mayor of Jersey City and a New Jersey state assemblyman.

The Asbury Park Press reported that the rabbis arrested were religious leaders from Syrian Jewish neighborhoods in Deal and Elberon, as well as Brooklyn, N.Y. The newspaper said the investigation involved the Deal Yeshiva, a Sephardic institution that has a boys’ division in Ocean Township and a girls’ school in West Long Branch.

According to The Star-Ledger, the arrests are the result of a two-year probe by the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service that began with an investigation of money transfers by members of the Syrian enclaves in Deal and Brooklyn, two tight-knit and wealthy communities.

GMAFB . Cue emphasis “Syrian” Enclaves in Deal and Brooklyn now..

Anyways, .

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the IRS removed at least three boxes from the Deal Yeshiva as students were arriving at school, The Star-Ledger reported, as well as several boxes from the Ohel Yaacob synagogue in the same town.

Law enforcement authorities are expected to announce more information about the arrests at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Feds bust N.J. mayors, others for organ selling, corruption, ‘money-laundering conspiracy’

NEWARK, N.J. – The mayors of two New Jersey cities and a state legislator were arrested Thursday in connection with a major corruption and international money-laundering conspiracy probe. Some of the suspects were also allegedly involved in an illegal human organ-selling ring.

Among the approximately 30 people arrested were Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, who took office 23 days ago, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, state Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt and Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark.

An FBI spokesman told NBC affiliate WNBC that the investigation involved a “high-volume international money-laundering conspiracy.”

WNBC reported that some of the suspects also were accused of accepting cash payments that were taken to help find organs for sick patients in need of transplants. It was unclear where the body parts might have come from or how many surgeries may have been done.

Several rabbis in New York and New Jersey were also taken into custody, federal prosecutors said.

Cars were backed up four deep with suspects outside the FBI’s Newark office.

FBI and IRS agents were making the roundups in what is being described as one of the biggest investigations of its kind in state history, according to WNBC.

BooHooHooMan - 23 July 2009

Why, They are so SPECIAL….

According to the court papers, it’s not quite clear how the international money-laundering scheme is related to corrupt local politics. Two of the Rabbis involved, Mordchai Fish, who served at Congregation Sheves Achim, a synagogue in Brooklyn, and his brother Albert Schwartz, were caught on tape having conversations with the cooperating witness that seemed straight out of a movie script, according to court transcripts:

“I had 25 million from [the bank] – 20 million – that schnookie deal. I gave 20 million to [another bank]. I, I took five million. I sent it offshore..” said the witness, who was reputedly also involved in a counterfeit handbag racket, according to the court papers.

Chosen ….

Defendant Issac Rosenbaum, meanwhile, was caught up in a shady organ procurement program, where an undercover FBI agent and the cooperating witness pretended to need a human liver for the undercover’s sick uncle, the feds charge.

“Let me explain this to you,” said Rosenbaum on February 26, 2008 according to the court documents. “It’s illegal to buy [ a liver]. It’s illegal to sell. They are going to investigate him [the donor] not you, not your uncle. He’s going to speak to a social worker and a psychologist to find out why he is doing it… and it is our job to prepare him.”

The cost would be $160,000 for the liver donation – 50 percent up front – but Rosenbaum repeatedly made it clear, according to court papers, “It’s illegal to buy or sell organs. .. . So you cannot buy it. What you do is, you’re giving a compensation for the time . . . whatever–-he’s not working. You can’t even mention.”

Cut a check to the Blue Dogs ,Maury.

marisacat - 23 July 2009

OK! We come with two kidneys, right? But just one liver?

Eeek. So were they murdering for parts? Or what?

LOL Are they saying Schwartz is Sephardic? Good one!

BooHooHooMan - 23 July 2009

Might have been a lobe. you can do a lobe.

…But if there was money to be made on a total liver..pfft…
… someone on the inside or have hacked into the crossmatched donor base..

marisacat - 23 July 2009

right… you can slice some off and it will grow! So handy for organ merchants!

Like whatshisname went to Tennessee where there are more livers available.. than in Cali. Even tho the organ transplant place in Davis California does so much they they screw the whole system, or so I have read.

BooHooHooMan - 23 July 2009
6. catnip - 23 July 2009

In hindsight, this is hilarious.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker used African, Hebrew, and Muslim analogies on Wednesday to reinforce the American motto “E Pluribus Unum,” Latin for, “out of many, one,” during a speech that may have been meant to set the tone for a reuniting of Hoboken’s political factions after a thoroughly divisive mayoral election.

Shortly after taking the oath of office to become the 37th mayor of Hoboken, Peter Cammarano also committed to the reunification theme.

“Though we campaigned with fists raised, I now extend my hand,” he said. “Our fates are intertwined.”

The new mayor recounted his theme of work ethic and asked the City Council to work with him to right the city’s ship.

“I ask that we leave nothing for tomorrow that we can accomplish today,” Cammarano said.

Corzine has a couple of Hoboken jokes

Gov. Jon Corzine and Sen.s Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) were on hand for the occasion. Both Corzine and Menendez are Hoboken residents.

In keeping with the unity theme, the master of ceremonies was Ines Garcia-Keim, the former campaign chairman for mayoral candidate Beth Mason. Keim went on to support Cammarano in the runoff election against candidate Dawn Zimmer, although Mason supported Zimmer.

When Corzine spoke, he joked that it was great to see the democratic process play out in Hoboken, but that he felt like he “voted 10 times in three weeks.”

He commented on Hoboken’s propensity for attracting young residents (the new mayor is 31): “When I moved here two and a half years ago, the average age went up two years.”

He parted by wishing Cammarano and the council members luck, and making one last request. “Get my property taxes down,” he said, “will you?”

7. catnip - 23 July 2009

According to the FBI report, Cammarano said, ‘The Italians, the Hispanics, the seniors are locked down. Nothing can change that now…I could be, uh, indicted, and I’m still gonna win 85 to 95 percent of those populations.”

Democrats Aligned with Abortion-Rights Opponents Receive Money From Them

Abortion-rights opponents have found allies in a group of lawmakers looking to make sure that federal funds don’t end up covering abortions as part of the health care reform legislation.

Although abortion-rights opponents have given Republicans 95 percent of their $6.9 million in campaign contributions since 1989, several Democrats are among those pushing for an abortion funding ban. Many of the Democrats involved have collected money from pro-life groups but not pro-choice organizations, the Center for Responsive Politics has found. …snip…

Son of Bin Laden Is Killed in Pakistan, U.S. Says

Published: July 23, 2009

WASHINGTON — A son of Osama bin Laden was probably killed in the past few months in a missile strike in Pakistan, American officials said Thursday.

The son, Saad bin Laden, had spent years under Iranian house arrest but left under murky circumstances at the end of last year or earlier this year and had been operating inside Pakistan, American intelligence officials said.

“Preliminary indications point to his death, but it’s not 100 percent certain,” a United States counterterrorism official said on Thursday.

The official declined to identify his sources of information, but American intelligence officials in this kind of situation typically rely on communications intercepts, prisoner interrogations and statements on jihadist Web sites [so reliable! — Mcat].

Without a body on which to conduct D.N.A. tests, it is difficult for American officials to be absolutely certain of a militant’s death. snipsnappy

But, we got one! One of something! And a whole lot of women and children! Too!

Christie calls for resignations of all N.J. politicians charged with corruption

WEST NEW YORK — Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie called for the resignation all public officials involved in today’s sweeping corruption and international money laundering ….
…The majority of the public officials charged today were Hudson County Democrats, including Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith.

“Me too” whimpers Corzine.

Doria was not among the 44 people charged.

Corzine. He so funny.

I see the Drug Czar came into the mouth of the whale. Or something.

The federal government is not going to pull back on its efforts to curtail marijuana farming operations, Gil Kerlikowske, director of the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy, said Wednesday in Fresno.

The nation’s drug czar, who viewed a foothill marijuana farm on U.S. Forest Service land with state and local officials earlier Wednesday, said the federal government will not support legalizing marijuana.

“Legalization is not in the president’s vocabulary, and it’s not in mine,” he said.

Kerlikowske said he can understand why legislators are talking about taxing marijuana cultivation to help cash-strapped government agencies in California. But the federal government views marijuana as a harmful and addictive drug, he said.

“Marijuana is dangerous and has no medicinal benefit,” Kerlikowske said in downtown Fresno while discussing Operation SOS — Save Our Sierra — a multiagency effort to eradicate marijuana in eastern Fresno County.

Officials say the marijuana-eradication operation will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but the exact amount won’t be known until agencies can add up staffing, vehicle and other costs.

In Operation SOS, more than 314,000 plants were uprooted in 70 gardens — numbers expected to rise as the enforcement action continues. Agents also seized $41,000 in cash, 26 firearms and three vehicles.

Planning for the operation began in February and focused on marijuana crops being backed by Mexican drug cartels, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said

Last year, Fresno County deputies seized 188,000 marijuana plants.

In just one week, nearly twice as many plants were seized, Mims said, “so you can imagine how many we were missing.”snipwhippy
