I linked to this at the end of the last thread…

The passion gap in Va.

I’m still anxiously awaiting the first Mason Dixon or WashPost Virginia gubernatorial poll — the two outlets that sample Virginia voters in every election year — but the second survey in recent days showing Republican Bob McDonnell up double digits over Democrat Creigh Deeds says something more important than a bottom line that, given the state’s demographics, is almost certain to close.

That more important nugget: voter intensity.

According to the new Public Policy Poll, more McCain voters are rallying to McDonnell than Obama voters are to Deeds and the McCain voters are more locked into their choice than the Obama backers.

So there is room for growth and Obama will be in Northern Virginia later this week — and almost certainly come to one of the heavily African-American cities downstate later in the campaign — to try to narrow the intensity gap.

But, in a funny way, Obama is part of the Democrats’ problem in Virginia. No, not because his poll numbers are dropping or in the way that more liberal national Democrats traditonally have been nuisances for centrist Virginia Democrats (though those could well be issues, too).

Obama, instead, is illustrative of the heights Virginia Democrats have reached and the sense of accomplishment they feel. Not only have they won consecutive governor’s races, captured both Senate seats and won a majority of the state’s House delegation, but they ended a 44-year streak of giving their electoral votes to Republicans and played a pivotal, historic role in electing the country’s first black president.

After all that, getting pumped for yet another governor’s race — they come every four years thanks to the single-term limit rule — isn’t easy.

I guess sometimes “historic” just knocks people out for a bit. Chloroformed by the historicity… in a sense.

“The wind that was at our backs these last four years has died down a little,” said [Rep. Gerald] Connolly, lamenting the “very muted interest” in the primary. “Bush is gone and the heat on the war in Iraq has abated,” he said, citing two of the issues that helped power Democratic victories in 2006 and 2008.

I have no idea… but I do catch undercurrents out here of one thing, if Arnold runs for Boxer’s seat in 2010… he’ll have the help of Feinstein (won’t be the first time she has helped him either) and plenty of helpers in what is referred to as the Democratic Party.

I had no plans to line up and vote for Boxer next year, but if Arnold runs against her, I will.

hmmm I am surprised it made it to a Breaking News blurb. Losing it at the Health Club… maybe we have not had one of those… ?

it’s already 5 dead… full text from CNN

(CNN) — A shooting at an LA Fitness gym outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, killed five people and wounded as many as 15 on Tuesday, a local official said.

The shooter is among the fatalities, said Gary Vituccio, manager of Collier Township.

Allegheny General Hospital reported receiving two wounded patients at its trauma center, Mercy Hospital had six and St. Clair had one. No other details were immediately available.

Perry Calabro of nearby Bridgeville said he was between racquetball games at the gym when he suddenly heard screaming and multiple gunshots. He said he ran out and didn’t see the gunman or others.

Witnesses told CNN affiliate WTAE that a man unrecognized by the gym’s staff shot people in a Latin dance class.

A witness identified as Nicole told WTAE that about 30 women were in the class when “a middle-aged white male walked into the class. He had a big gym bag.”

“He looked out of place in a class full of women,” according to the witness, who told WTAE the man put down the bag, turned off the lights and opened fire

Gunman dead at the scene.
While “Fresh kill” arrives at the Med Centers for quick commodities brokering…

With every one of these awful
“mass shootings/ victims rushed to…”
I hate to say it, but millions and millions of dollars are made in organ recovery on each and every one…. factoring in average donor rates. No that Donor Agreements have ever been an impediment. Hell the fop of a local Pathotlogist just kept Einsteins brain after the autopsy
and kept it in a jar befor handing out slices like cigars depriving the family and perhaps Neuroscience alike. There are numerous cases of unauthorized “parts” retrievals even without patient or decedent family permission.

I have no idea how much of this spree killings are attributable to random haters, psychotic break types or the slow burn nut jobs that crop up with occasion and frequency enough that it has become culturally familiar.

Or to what degree it has to do with a Society that seemingly produces such berzerkers with ease. My instincts and intellect tell me it is “Alot”.

But in such a milieu, and amongst a populace that have elevated the worship of Money and Markets to State Religion, that have a country of @350 million people largely enthralled to Military ,Corporate, and Medical Complex propoganda….

It most certainly is a place that has become a most lucrative hunting ground… our knowledge of randomness and the Law of Great Numberstendency notwithstanding… a public tendency – of all ironies – to believe in inexplicability . And if inexplicability carries the day, Perhaps it is even some perverse symmetry of our making a hunting ground of other Nations and Peoples..

In my mind, I’ve already formed a Usual Suspects rundown of the LA Fitness Gym shooter. Vain. Woman Hater. Ex or imaginary “current” of one in the class. Perhaps steroidal , maybe card carrying member of the club.

Having read the FBI criminal complaint citing recordings in which the dual organ broker said

“We have people hunting all the time”

It is not hard for me to grok that all sorts of creatures of opportunity could make it happen in BOTH countries when “favorable’ circumstances occur. Especially in Two Countries who have made a Policy, and National Life Support out of violence.

Every club shooting. Every mass killing.
Any idea the money made of the VA Tech shooting? One of the more memorable that whizz by like so many bullets and fucked up people in line at “non profit “/ Agenda neutral” social service agencies……

These killings occurred in on of the few places left afloat of Pittsburgh’s once sprawling suburbs, The South Hills

… Bridgeville.. Upper St. Clair.. that area the draw for LA Gym’s clientele there ..Ironically Club Managements classic “target” member in such a market, Docs, Executives and nurses at UPMC, The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The Last Lifeline of Pittsburgh’s economy now.

Actually it seems this guy was a hardcore loner frustrated at his inability to get a date. (In his diary, he wrote that he estimated 30 million women had rejected him personally.)

I was wondering when one of these guys would turn into a rampage killer. Took long enough.

It is interesting why some men become stalkers and others don’t, but just stew alone in their anger. Anyhow, it’s sad not just for the women he killed and wounded at the health club, but for all the decent Lonely Guys out there who would never plan such a thing.

marisacat - 5 August 2009

Member of the club too, he was. Pity these just can’t suicide, and be happy with that, but noooo… gotta take a few with them.

BooHooHooMan - 5 August 2009

Well the guy turning out the lights in a room full of women in sports bras was the kicker for me. I say that seriously with no disrespect.

But I’d say that sexually sublimate killers going on rampages has been going on for a very very long time. With the Imprimatur of Religion..the Seal of State … both.

S.E.C. Starts Crackdown on ‘Flash’ Trading
By CHARLES DUHIGG
Published: August 4, 2009

The Securities and Exchange Commission has begun a widespread effort to crack down on stock trading techniques that regulators worry are giving sophisticated financiers, armed with lightning-fast computers, an edge that everyday investors cannot match.

The S.E.C. chairwoman, Mary L. Schapiro, said on Tuesday that she would push to eliminate a controversial high-frequency trading technique known as “flash orders,” which allow traders to peek at other investors’ orders before they are sent to the wider marketplace.

“We want to know if people are utilizing technology for illicit purposes such as gaming the markets and getting advance knowledge of trades,” said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, who had threatened to introduce legislation banning flash orders.

“Chairman Schapiro is going to attempt to separate innovations, which are good, from taking advantage of people, which must be prohibited.”

Still waiting for that legislation that Schumer “threatened” to introduce.
And so we drift. In that bankrupt ship of state, The USS Incredible.

Scahill in The Nation

“>Blackwater Founder Implicated in Murder
By Jeremy Scahill

August 4, 2009

A former Blackwater employee and an ex-US Marine who has worked as a security operative for the company have made a series of explosive allegations in sworn statements filed on August 3 in federal court in Virginia. The two men claim that the company’s owner, Erik Prince, may have murdered or facilitated the murder of individuals who were cooperating with federal authorities investigating the company.

The former employee also alleges that Prince “views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe,” and that Prince’s companies “encouraged and rewarded the destruction of Iraqi life.”

In their testimony, both men also allege that Blackwater was smuggling weapons into Iraq. One of the men alleges that Prince turned a profit by transporting “illegal” or “unlawful” weapons into the country on Prince’s private planes. They also charge that Prince and other Blackwater executives destroyed incriminating videos, emails and other documents and have intentionally deceived the US State Department and other federal agencies. The identities of the two individuals were sealed out of concerns for their safety.

These allegations, and a series of other charges, are contained in sworn affidavits, given under penalty of perjury, filed late at night on August 3 in the Eastern District of Virginia as part of a seventy-page motion by lawyers for Iraqi civilians suing Blackwater for alleged war crimes and other misconduct……

Old Feuds Resurface in a Brooklyn Rezoning Fight

By KAREEM FAHIM
Published: August 4, 2009

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has made a plan to create housing for half a million low- and moderate-income New Yorkers one of his signature initiatives, driving the rezoning of swaths of New York City to create what city planners call the largest municipal affordable housing plan in the nation.

Many of the complaints stem from a decision by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development to grant early rights to develop city-owned sites in the Triangle to two nonprofit groups, the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg, who represent part of the fast-growing Hasidic community, and the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council, without competitive bids — a relatively rare but legal move.

Kiss es adiós.

The dispute reflects an often prideful fight for territory that has played out between competing factions — often Hispanic and Hasidic groups — in Williamsburg since the 1960s.

Even so, longtime neighborhood watchers call the latest installment particularly nasty, and perhaps needlessly so. Luis Garden Acosta, an opponent of the rezoning and the founder of El Puente, a local nonprofit group that provides services to Hispanics, said that in recent years, some of the old neighborhood rivalries had started to quiet: “To be thrown so violently into the past is startling.”

Oh , spare ME.

The players in the current drama have worked in Williamsburg and Bushwick for decades, and many of them were profiled in “Bargaining for Brooklyn,” a 2007 book by the sociologist Nicole P. Marwell that chronicles the role of community-based organizations in the lives of the poor. The groups revitalized devastated neighborhoods, cultivated loyal constituencies and frequently found themselves at odds.

{Snip}

It was declared an urban renewal area in 1989, when the city and Pfizer, which had a large pharmaceutical plant there, proposed an industrial park with hundreds of units of housing. Though some housing was built over the next decade, and several businesses started operating, the area remained defined mostly by its overgrown empty lots and its potential. Several years ago, another initiative proposed rezoning the area to residential and building about 1,000 units of affordable housing.

MIC /Med $$$ —>Pols —> Banks Real Estate —>Pols and Local Charlatans..and back again.
Select Enrichment via systemic ghetto-ization.

But soon, the fighting began. The details are hotly disputed, with the leaders of several groups saying that Mr. Lopez and U.J.O.’s director, Rabbi David Niederman, worked with the city to control the planning to ensure development privileges for their favored nonprofit groups.

In that version of events, the planning process was complicated by local rivalries and political sideshows, including Mr. Lopez’s falling-out with his former chief of staff, Councilwoman Diana Reyna; and the competition between Satmar factions.

My only question below is-
Who got the Heroin trade concession?
Two conniving fucks, ‘f ya ask me…

But in interviews, Mr. Lopez and Rabbi Niederman both said that the rezoning process was inclusive, and that the complaints amounted to sour grapes from rival developers.

“It’s absurd,” said Mr. Lopez, who is regarded, even by his detractors, as one of the city’s most prolific and successful advocates for affordable housing. “Isn’t it better that in a year or two this is 80 or 90 percent built, with the housing units given out by lottery, rather than having an empty, rat-filled lot?”

Rabbi Niederman expressed a similar thought, saying, “I believe at the end of the day, when families have housing, all of this jealousy will disappear.”

Sure.

This is Niederman.

woo… smack down from Hedges

LeAlan Jones, the 30-year-old Green Party candidate for Barack Obama’s old Senate seat in Illinois, is as angry at injustice as he is at the African-American intellectual and political class that accommodates it. He does not buy Obama’s “post-racial” ideology or have much patience with African-American leaders who, hungry for prestige, power and money, have, in his eyes, forgotten the people they are supposed to represent. They have confused a personal ability to be heard and earn a comfortable living with justice.

“The selflessness of leaders like Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, Harold Washington and Medgar Evers has produced selfishness within the elite African-American leadership,” Jones told me by phone from Chicago.

“This is the only thing I can do to have peace of mind,” he said when I asked him why he was running for office. “I am looking at a community that is suffering because of a lack of genuine concern from their leaders. This isn’t about a contract. This isn’t about a grant. This isn’t about who gets to stand behind the political elite at a press conference. This is about who is going to stand behind the people. What these leaders talk about and what needs to happen in the community is disjointed.”

Obama: ‘Left-wing groups’ should back off.

OBAMA WAVES OFF LIBERALS: On the same day that MoveOn.org announced a new wave of ads to pressure centrist …

… Democrats on health care reform, President Obama told Senate Democrats he wished “left-wing groups” would back off.

A White House official who was in the lunch tells POLITICO: “The President discussed how the current tone and culture in Washington made it more difficult than it has been in the past to work in a bipartisan fashion. In particular, he singled out Republican Senators who are trying to work in a bipartisan fashion even in the context of a vocal minority in their party who doubt that the President was born in the US. In this context about the less productive tone of the debate in Washington, he said he didn’t like to see ‘left wing groups attack fellow Democrats.'”

Yet, when he had his presser, he urged everybody to put pressure on their congresscritters. Running scared. Once again.

Obama team mulls new quarantine regulations

The Obama administration is quietly dusting off an effort to impose new federal quarantine regulations, which were vigorously resisted by civil liberties organizations and the airline industry when the rules were first proposed by the Bush administration nearly four years ago.

White House officials aren’t saying what their rules might ultimately require. But the previous administration proposed giving the federal government the authority to order a “provisional quarantine” of three business days — or up to six calendar days — for those suspected of having swine flu or other illnesses listed in a presidential executive order.

The Bush-era proposal would also have required airlines and cruise lines to store more information about domestic and international passengers, such as e-mail addresses, traveling companions and return flight information. The information would be subject to review by federal officials in a health emergency, though it would be voluntary for passengers to provide the data.

Opponents of the Bush administration’s efforts to enforce the new guidelines insist that they still are a mistake. “It’s not really going to help,” said Wendy Mariner, a professor of law and public health at Boston University.

“The proposals to limit liberty represent a dangerous precedent to constitutional theory, particularly when there’s almost no evidence it will matter. … It wouldn’t surprise me if they try to sneak this past in August, when people are away.” snip

Hearing the umpteenth report out here, the 25th Federal raid in the past six months, of a Marijuana growing house in what is the Outer Sunset/Richmond area… the big swathe of the City that runs West to Ocean Beach. There are a lot of small post war houses out there, called Junior 5s, small private homes, with elongated back yard, garage basement and 5 rooms.

I sure doubt that ”growing enterprises” are new out there.. but the raids are.

DEA seems to be working in conjunction with Taraval Station, the police station out there.

Love a Liberal in the WH! And a Liberal (they say, tho he is resolutely DLC) in the City Hall.

11. marisacat - 5 August 2009

Ugh-a-thon.

These days, on the subject of his own influence, Senator Chuck Schumer is unusually demure.

“I’m not going to assess my influence,” Mr. Schumer told The Observer at his weekly Sunday press conference. “I’m working hard on a whole lot of different things. God blessed me with a lot of energy and I try to expend it for the public good.”

Other officials in New York and Washington are considerably less reserved on the topic.

“I think he’s the future majority leader,” said Representative Eliot Engel of New York, in response to a general question about Mr. Schumer’s influence. “I do.”

There is a reason for this. Mr. Schumer has a good thing going, and he doesn’t want to mess it up by going around stating the premise too publicly.

So, for example, the very mention of the words “majority leader” within 10 inches of Mr. Schumer’s name drives him and his office, pretty literally, insane, since there is no evidence that he is actively maneuvering for that particular position or that he is anything but supportive of the current majority leader, Harry Reid. Mr. Schumer, for whom this seems to be a highly sensitive issue, wants to make sure that’s abundantly clear.

“We have the ideal leadership team in place—led by Senator Reid—in the Senate, and I hope to stay in my current position for a very long time,” Mr. Schumer said in a statement. “Harry is an extraordinary Majority Leader and one of my close personal friends. I am doing everything I can to see that he is reelected so I can continue to serve with him for the benefit our party, the Senate and the entire country. In my 35 years as a legislator, I have not seen anyone more able to take a diverse caucus and weave it in to a unified, effective legislative family.” snip
