Krugman hates Obama more than Grassley does. I don’t recall Grassley making personal character attacks on Obama. If anyone has the character issue, it’s Krugman, who has demonstrated an unhealthy problem with Obama, an almost jealously of Obama. He wants Obama to fail, partly because Obama’s economic team rejected Krugman’s radical nationalization schemes. Remember the very arrogant Newsweek cover with a big picture of Krugman’s round head, saying simply “Why Obama is wrong”? Wow, the pure arrogance of that guy.

If Krugman wants to be “embraced”, let him stick to criticizing policies, rather than making personal character attacks. For once one does the latter, he has burned down the bridge.

If Georgia or Ukraine has a confrontation with Russia, there is not much the US can do. There are certain realities of geography that present military technology simply cannot overcome. They border Russia, and the US is far away.

American promises would be as valuable as the French assurances to Poland before the second world war. It is not well known, but France had pledged to launch an attack on Germany within 15 days of any German attack on Poland. Unfortunately for the Poles, the French promise was not serious. When Germany invaded, France declared war – and did nothing.

Placed in a similar circumstance, that is what the US would do – nothing. The US would do nothing because there is nothing it can do. Geography cannot be changed. In addition, American forces are now fully engaged. In order to increase troop numbers in Afghanistan, the US will have to reduce them in Iraq. Apparently, 200,000 American troops are now all that can be deployed in combat theatres at any one time.

For all the talk about the lone superpower, that number needs to be kept in mind. In Vietnam, the US deployed 500,000 in theatre at the peak, with a smaller population, and was not responding to an attack on its territory.

Today the US can deploy far fewer troops. Something has changed in American society. With defence spending increasing to fight wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, George Bush did not even propose a way to pay for the war, either through raising taxes or by cutting other expenditures. No war bonds were issued. The country just quietly accumulated debt.

A political judgment was made: the American people were told to go shopping. The war would not touch the general public. Only an honoured few would bear the burden.

The US did not take war seriously, but was not alone in underestimating the costs and complications of war.

AND in the midst of this horror, we put in 65K in troop numbers, of various sorts, in NO, that was the count 2 weeks post Katrina hitting. NG from several states, Coast Guard, army, marines, DEA, ICE… to say nothing of Blackwater and other private forces. Also 82nd Airborne, fresh from the battle field in Iraq…

AND some MEXICAN marines, along the MS coast anyway, they were photographed there (LA Times ran the pics). First time for foreign troops on US soil since 1848.

Sad to say I think we can subdue a lot, if we decide to do it.

Poll: Either GOP challenger could topple Harry Reid

Results released today show not only does Reid remain unpopular in Nevada, he would be clobbered in next fall’s election by either of two potential Republican challengers.

The poll has been bouncing around Washington today – other takes on the poll are available from Politico and CQ Politics.

The poll shows Reid being beat by 11 percentage points (38 percent to 49 percent, with 13 undecided) by Republican Danny Tarkanian, a real estate professional who has run twice unsuccessfully for public office. His father was the legendary basketball coach at UNLV.

If the matchup were today, Reid also would fall to Sue Lowden (40 percent to 45 percent, with 15 undecided), the chair of the state’s struggling Republican Party who has not yet entered the race. The former state legislator and television news journalist is expected to announce in the next few weeks if she will run.

The poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, surveyed 400 Nevadans and had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent.

Some pundits like to say the only poll that matters is the one on Election Day, and Reid has rarely had great numbers in the politically split state going into campaign season.

If they had half a brain between the lot of them the donks would drop him as Majority Leader.

marisacat - 23 August 2009: The question is, do the R want to run against him. He and Ensign decided on a share the power game, a couple of cycles ago. They spot operatives and lower level electeds to each others stump stages… and carefully do not mount a strong challenger. One hting I DO like about NV is the political press in the LV Journal and the LV Sun… often good juicy reporting. Unlke the spoon fed baby press in the Bay Area… who mostly don’t even report on the local electeds, less they say the wrong thing. It is that bad.

It does seem some wrenches are flying in the air in the NV elections. Be interesting to see what comes up in the next election.

NY, NJ, VA, NV… I sort of doubt they can hold Cali on the R column, but who knows. And other states percolating along that I know nothing of as they don’t reach the level of national reporting at this point.

Last week I went to a cookout on the beach here with some old friends (Sausages and seafood, but no cocktail weenies!) Every year they do a cookout, and then a birthday party, and for years I’ve known that one of their guests was Joe Klein. I never mixed it up with him because, after all, well…the opportunity never presented itself and while I’m pretty aggressive in print no one really goes up to someone and picks a quarrel with them, do they?

Or maybe they do. Yes, I guess they do. I was standing at the cookout minding my own business when Klein started pontificating for the rubes on how “surprising” and “shocking” it was that Grassley, of all people, should have come out and endorsed the “death panels” lie. I walked up and said “why are you surprised?” [edited to remove typo] to which he, in best pundit debater fashion (never allow yourself to admit you were just posing!), shot back “who says I’m surprised?” I said “well, you did. You just started your lecture saying “Its surprising.”” Its not surprising, the republicans have nothing left to lose and nothing left to gain at this point outside of pleasing the crazy base and attacking Obama and the dems.”

We were off and running. He then said that its true the fringe republicans were “crazy” but perhaps no crazier than the “crazy left” under Bush. I thought he meant the “truthers” so I said “name me one person in congress or the Senate who was as crazy on any topic as these Republican senators and Congressmen who sign on to the birther and deather stuff are now?” Evading this question he said “well, Glenn Greenwald is crazy—he’s a civil liberties absolutist.” Now, me, I come from a long line of civil liberties absolutists so I said “I admire Glenn Greenwald’s work immensley but it must be very embarrassing for you, of course, because he’s been eating your lunch for years.” (!) I think this must be something of a sore point for him. He began shrieking “Glenn Greenwald is EVIL! EVILl!..do you know what he did? He “sicced” his blog readers on my EDITOR and she was going through a DIVORCE at the time.” Really? I said, politely, that was very wrong, if it happened.

“We kept it very quiet” he said, backing off the claim of any real harm and, as a twofer, managing to imply that only those “in the know” had been kept informed.

People around us were clamoring to know what the debate was about so I laid it out, chapter and verse: I explained the Klein was upset because he had been caught out shilling for the Republicans on National Security Matters and on the FISA court legislation in particular and that he was still upset because he’d been held up for ridicule for his absurd statement that there was no problem with the secret Bush programs although he didn’t know anything about them. And that this extended to the actual retroactive FISA legislation, which he also said was fine but didn’t know anything about. This seemed to inflame things somewhat. Can’t see why. He began shrieking at me that he hadn’t been wrong, he’d been misled by a “democratic staffer” but really, I just began laughing at that point because “I didn’t read the legislation” like “the dog ate my homework” is rather a lame explanation for a grown man, let alone a self described journalist.

I re-iterated that I was a big admirer of Glenn’s work and that he had just received the I.F. Stone award for his excellence. That really got Klein’s goat and he started screaming that he had been one of Izzy’s readers for years and that Glenn was no Izzy, that he was crazily anti-national security which Izzy wouldn’t have been, and at any rate I shouldn’t talk about things I don’t understand and I should realize that Klein has been on the right side of every argument since the Vietnam war. Yes! I should read his stuff on the Vietnam war!”

I said that I was, in fact, one of his readers—that I read his column and his blog and that it was precisely because I did know his history, in detail, that I accepted Glenn’s critique of him, which of course has always been extensively documented and linked. And then, in what might be the piece de resistance of this little interaction, he screamed “you don’t read me! You read WIKIPEDIA! AND THAT’S LEFTIST.” He then added that he had always been anti war and that I should “read his [Klein’s] stuff from 1993.” Hmm….1993, were we at war with Iraq then? I rather thought that was a different time, and even a different president. I take it that the rationale behind that bizarre interjection is that, as far as Klein is concerned, most of this is really old history at this point and what he really wants to be talking about is health care reform.

After this the e discussion, such as it was, devolved into the usual journalistic posturing and ranting against “those bloggers” who “don’t do research” and who “don’t have editors.” (There were many other well respected journalists at this dinner but they don’t deserve to be dragged in here) to which I responded “jeezus christ on toast points you can say that to me after it came out today that John Solomon, then of the Washington Post, was writing fawning letters to the White House explaining to them how he could spin the US attorney scandal anyway they wanted? And hellooooo? Judy Miller?”

The doctors and nurses I deal with on a near-daily basis are absolutely astonished whenever I don’t know something, like if a test result is what you’d call normal or what some number might indicate or even in what order certain procedures are done and how many times. They look at me like teachers who are pissed I haven’t studied for their tests.

And, yes, I have the time and wherewithal to seek out information (except the medical Internet is bonkers, which is another post, plus dammit sometimes I just want them to do their jobs and tell me what I need to know) but what if I didn’t? What if I didn’t have a job that was flexible in its hours so I could get to appointments which are whenever the doctor feels like it, what if I didn’t have the time to research things and call friends and get second opinions and really be in charge of this myself? Not everyone can, and we have designed a system that is basically made to weed out the old, very sick and easily frustrated, to shove them into underfunded emergency rooms because if they can’t deal with the constant hassle they just wait until they can’t wait anymore.

Boy, is that the truth. MANY of them have abdicated their jobs. The offer choices with no information, no considered medical opinion and ask what do you want to do.

I remember when my mother first crashed, crashed BIG, the ER saved her life basically. But the dr, her dr not the ER doc, looked at me and said, do you have any questions. And fortunately my cousin (and her husband and my mother’s sister) were there, and my cousin said, Maybe you could let us in on what the questions should be.

Apparently, success breeds the desire to stop the success these days. Earlier this week, JetBlue announced it would be discontinuing its “All You Can Jet” sales as a result of a high demand. The company decided that in selling additional passes, it might make it difficult for people to get seats, so they put out the fire on the hottest promotion in air travel. The underlying idea, of course, is that it was costing the company money because every seat you have to give away after the pass has paid for itself is one fewer seat that you can’t sell. And, since seats are a finite resource on planes, despite the airline industry’s best efforts, well… You get the idea.

The “Cash for Clunkers” program has also met a similar fate, with the government announcing the plan would end on Monday after dealers reported that the plan had exceeded their wildest expectations. Dealers had also been grousing that they hadn’t been paid by the government for the $4,500 outlays they’d made on about 80 percent of the cars. (A company pissed off because IT has to wait for a rebate… The irony is so thick, it’s delicious.) I have no idea how dealers weren’t ready for this as a) no one was buying anything until this program came along, b) they’re always on the air wearing anything short of a clown suit, screaming about how people need to rush out and buy their crap and c) with the cost of gas still sitting in the $2.60 range, people would likely be happy to trade in a guzzler for something better. (The first car I drove as my own was Dad’s 1979 Ford Thunderbird, which got gallons per mile instead of miles per gallon. When the Gulf War jacked the gas up to $1.80 a gallon, I nearly died.)

Here’s a news flash for corporate America: People like cheap/free shit.

Thus, if you plan to offer a promotion that is pretty much a giveaway of any sort, get used to the idea that people will gluttonously consume your product. Gear up and get ready for it. You also need to not whine so damned much when people actually do take advantage of it. I was in the store a few months ago and found a sale on something I use a ton of. I had a place to store the extra, so I filled my cart with the stuff. The sign noted “No limit” so I figured I was good. When I got to the cashier, she gave me this look like I was stealing stuff. “That’s a REALLY good deal, you know…” she said, with that sense that she wanted to say “Maybe you should let OTHER people get some too…” Uh… No… I wanted it, I’m paying for it, you set the rules, I’m abiding by them. This isn’t like insurance fraud or something. If you didn’t want me to have the stuff, don’t sell it. Otherwise, shut up, ring me up and let me get another cart.

When we are put in a position of having to buy something at the ascribed price because we need it (think gasoline), we have no recourse. They set the price and we have to cope or we don’t get the stuff. In the minds of those with the business, it’s fair. Why is it that when the tables are turned through their own miscalculations, we are viewed as being the bad guys? Is it that we don’t have a bogeyman like OPEC behind us that we can blame for our actions? Or is it that people who are usually in control just don’t like being depantsed?

Media stars are so unaccustomed to being held accountable for the impact of their behavior — especially when they’re on television — that they consider it a grievous assault on their entitlement when it happens.

22. marisacat - 23 August 2009: hmm LVRJ has a piece up on the Reid vs whoever in NV… and it mentions unemployment is pushing 13%.

If Reid, with Ob-lation in the WH, cannot deliver jobs to NV, I would guess he is going down.

And I don’t see Miss Nancy and her cadre (Miller, Eschoo, Barbara Lee, Woolsey etc, Dem mayors, etc) really helping the Bay Area to be frank. The 9 counties cover the range for the state, excepting for highest and lowest unemployment. One county at 13, another co at 17 and last I looked for SF City and Co it was around 10.
