Packham makes good points about preserving systems rather than species, but how much of the public can grasp that argument? I think he greatly underestimates the value of flagship species.
His argument can also be extended to the condor or, as the Bush administration did, to sockeye and other salmon, just not fit for their environment – never mind the river being so much slower, warmer, and full of nitrogen than it was 50 years ago. More legitimately so to dozens of others that are functionally extinct in the sense of playing no role in their original ecosystem. It can be said of the Svalbard seed bank that so impresses everyone. In a hundred years, you can’t just return these seeds to a different climate, with their pollinators and other associates missing and expect it to work out.
The Guardian piece doesn’t include his quote repeated widely elsewhere: “Here’s a species that of its own accord has gone down an evolutionary cul-de-sac.”
That “of its own accord” makes one wonder if he is fit to pontificate on evolution. I’d like to know what the hell it is supposed to mean.
well I understand the argument he makes… it is not new. And it is the old cute and fluffy wins and less photogenic do not.
AND one can raise issues with WWF as well. In some cases, it has been shown they would clear the land of indigenous peoples, USING the wildlife to make the argument. And so on.

The problems with WWF and Greenpeace and CI, all of them, are familiar ones: size – they are huge, lack of oversight, lack of accountability lack of any reasoned criticism from the left or the darker green – Glen Barry being nearly the lone exception, lack of transparency.
Case in point: WCS has spent considerable money and time working to eradicate the beaver from Tierra del Fuego by any means necessary. This is a good thing. But you won’t see it in their public appeals, which are stuck like all of them in a childish cute pootie mode.

And except for the normal rush hours, registered voters in small towns can still get in and out in under ten minutes so the continuous vid would be okay not to mention it’d have audio too…Depending what you get, you sue and file a criminal complaint if the votes tossed.
