hmm Obviously I am behind the times… I did not know there was a conversation ongoing about [perhaps] letting the Giant Panda “go”. “Nature take its course”. That sort of thing. Or, at least, I am gathering that, reading the Guardian

End of the road Chris Packham says we should let nature take its course.

Mark Wright of WWF argues counterpoint!… and WWF is, like all good lobbyists, headquartered in Washington… so we know what they think counts.  Packham’s core selling point seems to be, why spend more millions on a LOSER.  (Not a sure fire slogan to winning… imo)

Shorter version, Packham argues for (you guessed it!) PRAGMATISM!  And Wright pretty much wants to keep the po$ter boy.

My god, forget the poor fragile panda… what shall be done with decades of global PR? Chinese breeding farms?   “Gifts” of Giant Pandas from China to its “friends”… ? (Better than ping pong game sets!)

Harvesting of Giant Panda semen? (And apparently breeding in captivity is just now paying off!)  Groves of special bamboo grown for the Giant Panda degustation?

And so on?

The poor things have been isolated, studied, fretted over, bodily fluids extracted, inseminated, filmed, watched, monitored (don’t roll on the babeee!), counted and re-counted… you name it.  The text to the photos says keepers and researchers resorted to “panda porn” to interest them in S-E-X… even Viagra was used.  One photo shows lab coats gathered by the fence bars to observe (and notate!) actual Panda S-E-X.

***

Time to say goodbye?

Poll: Do you agree? (Almost 79% say, keep saving Panda!… I think the system is safe…)

Al Franken reads the Fourth Amendment to DoJ official at PATRIOT Act hearings

“That’s pretty explicit language,” noted Franken, asking Kris how the “roving wiretap” provision of the Patriot Act can meet that requirement if it doesn’t require the government to name its target.

Kris looked flustered and mumbled that “this is surreal,” apparently referring to having to respond to Franken’s question. “I would defer to the other branch of government,” he said, referring to the courts, prompting Franken to interject: “I know what that is.”

The Constitution is “surreal”. So progressive, those Obites.

ooo well if Franken meant, it all… maybe Ob, Knob and Snob will be ignoring him.

Hummer Owners Claim Moral High Ground To Excuse Overconsumption, Study Finds

The researchers first investigated anti-consumption sentiments expressed by people who oppose chains like Starbucks and believe they are making a moral choice by shunning consumerism. To these critics, Hummers represent the ills of contemporary society. As one extreme example, on a website, people have posted thousands of photographs of middle fingers directed at Hummer vehicles.

They investigated various Internet expressions of anti-Hummer sentiment, but they were equally interested in the ways Hummer owners framed themselves as “moral protagonists” in the ongoing debate over consumer values. They conducted in-depth interviews with twenty U.S.-born and raised Hummer owners and found among these consumers an equally strong current of moralism.

“As we studied American Hummer owners and their ideological beliefs, we found that they consider Hummer driving a highly moral consumption choice,” write the authors. “For Hummer owners it is possible to claim the moral high ground.”

The authors explain that Hummer owners employ the ideology of American foundational myths, such as the “rugged individual,” and the “boundless frontier” to construct themselves as moral protagonists. They often believe they represent a bastion again anti-American discourses evoked by their critics.

“Our analysis of the underlying American identity discourses revealed that being under siege by (moral) critics is an historically established feature of being an American,” write the authors. “The moralistic critique of their consumption choices readily inspired Hummer owners to adopt the role of the moral protagonist who defends American national ideals.”

Change you can believe in!

Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) received a handwritten note Thursday from Joint Committee on Taxation Chief of Staff Tom Barthold confirming the penalty for failing to pay the up to $1,900 fee for not buying health insurance.

Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $25,000 penalty, Barthold wrote on JCT letterhead. He signed it “Sincerely, Thomas A. Barthold.”

I’m thinking that might be a problem for Ahnold since he’s already been forced to partially empty the overcrowded CA jails. Where are they going to house these new criminals? Gitmo?

marisacat - 25 September 2009

Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $25,000 penalty, Barthold wrote on JCT letterhead. He signed it “Sincerely, Thomas A. Barthold.”

They want to round up and imprison the homeless. Or toss them in the ocean. My guess, we will ship what we think is the “debris” collected under a law like that to out of state CCA (Corrections Corporation of America, old Whakenhut) … who will ship at least some f these poor people to the prisons they own and operate in our vassal states, like Nicaragua and Salvador.

Shades of Papillon

Madman in the Marketplace - 25 September 2009

maybe we can turn part of Detroit or some other old rustbelt city into a big, open air prison, say like Gaza. A private corporation could run it, and they could show no-rules boxing matches, road races and Big Brother style online surveillance shows to help pay for it …

Vegas could run odds on which newly-famous debtors and insurance scofflaws would survive the Mad Max like anarchist free-for-all.

9. artemis54 - 25 September 2009

Packham makes good points about preserving systems rather than species, but how much of the public can grasp that argument? I think he greatly underestimates the value of flagship species.

His argument can also be extended to the condor or, as the Bush administration did, to sockeye and other salmon, just not fit for their environment – never mind the river being so much slower, warmer, and full of nitrogen than it was 50 years ago. More legitimately so to dozens of others that are functionally extinct in the sense of playing no role in their original ecosystem. It can be said of the Svalbard seed bank that so impresses everyone. In a hundred years, you can’t just return these seeds to a different climate, with their pollinators and other associates missing and expect it to work out.

The Guardian piece doesn’t include his quote repeated widely elsewhere: “Here’s a species that of its own accord has gone down an evolutionary cul-de-sac.”

That “of its own accord” makes one wonder if he is fit to pontificate on evolution. I’d like to know what the hell it is supposed to mean.

marisacat - 25 September 2009

well I understand the argument he makes… it is not new. And it is the old cute and fluffy wins and less photogenic do not.

AND one can raise issues with WWF as well. In some cases, it has been shown they would clear the land of indigenous peoples, USING the wildlife to make the argument. And so on.

I long ago argued against the messy and corrupt “saving” of the California Condor…

artemis54 - 26 September 2009

The problems with WWF and Greenpeace and CI, all of them, are familiar ones: size – they are huge, lack of oversight, lack of accountability lack of any reasoned criticism from the left or the darker green – Glen Barry being nearly the lone exception, lack of transparency.

Case in point: WCS has spent considerable money and time working to eradicate the beaver from Tierra del Fuego by any means necessary. This is a good thing. But you won’t see it in their public appeals, which are stuck like all of them in a childish cute pootie mode.

Germany Election: Social Democrats, Left Party Reject National Cooperation Ahead Of Vote
Cameron Abadi I GlobalPost

BERLIN, Germany — The moderator at Tuesday night’s forum returned, again and again, to the same question. Turning to the candidates representing the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Left Party, she asked them why it was that their parties were refusing to work with one another on the national level.

Believe it or not, that’s about as lively as this year’s elections have gotten, even in the Berlin parliamentary district in question — the immigrant-heavy and economically-laggard Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.

Germany is plodding through the most lackluster election of its modern history, a situation that has more than a little to do with the willfully curious status of the Left Party, a new political grouping comprised of the reformed remnants of the ruling East German Communist Party and other Germans whose utopian longings weren’t fulfilled by the sober promises of the center-left SPD. The Left is expected to earn more than 10 percent of the vote Sept. 27, but, according to the other parties and some of its own members, is currently unfit to participate in governing….

Well I say a tee-ball BRAVO to the FIRST poster on thread…
AKA “the mean in meaningless”..

“utopian longings”

Now I’m sure the Left Party is compromised by the baggage of middlings that always make their way onboard, but I say that any LACK of coo-operation is a good thing…the proximate loss and glow of the spoilers aside…..if only we had a similar fraction of it here..

German hard left set to gain ground

While Germany’s larger parties have kept their election promises frustratingly vague – with slogans like “Confidence” (the Christian Democrat CDU) and “Our Country Can Do More” (the Social Democrat SPD), by contrast the Left has been far more specific.

“German Troops out of Afghanistan,” says one poster on the square; “Tax Wealth,” says another. “No to Nuclear Power,” another. And there are leaflets entitled: “More money for Education, Less for the Banks.”

“I think it’s a very successful campaign to use these concrete slogans,” says political commentator Michael Weidemann. “Many people who are not close to the Leftists might vote for them. Because they are the only party which acts this way.”

{Snip}

“People are frightened that in Germany the gap between the rich and the poor is growing wider.”

If the Left party now claims the political left, where does that leave Germany’s centre-left Social Democrats? The SPD has always claimed that it is the voice of the workers and the party of social justice.

But that has become an increasingly hard sell. When the previous SPD Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder pushed through painful welfare reforms which slashed state benefits, many SPD members left the party in disgust. Some went over to Die Linke.

Since then, four years of grand coalition government – with the Social Democrats as junior partner – have weakened the SPD even further.

{Snip}

“It’s especially bad for the SPD,” believes Michael Weidemann. “They have already lost a lot of the voters to the Green Party in the 1970s and 1980s. And now there are a lot of traditional SPD voters who are vanishing. The SPD may not be big enough in the future to even lead a two-party coalition.”

No willing partner

At a Left party information stand in the centre of Bochum, former SPD supporter Brunhilde Michaelis hands out leaflets, posters and balloons to passers-by. She believes the Left party has become what the SPD used to be, and what it should be.

::
“What does the SPD do for us people on the street? Nothing,” Ms Michaelis complains.

“They work together with the CDU [the main governing party]. And the CDU has always been the party of the capitalists. The SPD loses its image. I think it’s more the Left party – us – who are the real socialists.”

Well played, truly: Screw the concilliating SPD, let Frau Merkel win and own her record, while pestering the shit out of both her AND the SPD from the Bundestag. With more leverage.

Us? Oh we’re still screwed. LOL.
With a duopoly run here by Oligarchs?

BooHooHooMan - 25 September 2009

My only Question left regarding these new * billions lining Bill’s collection plate managed by the Goldman Sachs Partner who is Bills CEO at CGI……

How much of that cash is going to be injected into Newark and Camden as Street Money on Election Day comin up here in a few?…Some fleeting Good times for all on the Dem side in Jersey…Duopoly yes, but the R mustn’t get the upper hand, as it will cost… So a good time here I think is coming for the D side with their hands out in NJ..Not a bad time to be a Jersey Union Goon a few payments behind…Not a bad time to be on the street with a bad habit…while possessing a voter reg card.

..kind of like getting the night’s half-a-bundlle of skag “comp-ed” by the very sorts who bring it in on State-Department-cleared jets from AfPak….

Even better to be a shaky set of Election Judges willing en blocfor a price to look the other way …As Both sides are going to commit wholesale voting fraud. I’m thinking of having some people take vid cams to the polls, vid oneself outside, leave it running in ones jacket etc, then when in the booth, pull it back out as one keys in a write-in vote and then see if it shows up. Plenty of areas like mine still have a curtain my polling place has a curtain on an electronic machine with keyboard entry for write ins.

And except for the normal rush hours, registered voters in small towns can still get in and out in under ten minutes so the continuous vid would be okay not to mention it’d have audio too…Depending what you get, you sue and file a criminal complaint if the votes tossed. Tilting at windmills I know…As The whole system is corrupt.

marisacat - 25 September 2009

HA! I once secretly recorded my annual review. Just audio… but I worked for such. a. bitch… (no other word for it)…

I say, record away. Whomever! Black Panthers (MoJo finally put the vid up with a blurb from the videographer), white intimidation cadres… whomever.

And yo know, Ob says he does not believe in “walking around” money. Or he does nto believe in TOO MUCH of it. Or something.
