[T]he nigerian connection: Al-Qa’ida gaining strength in formerly moderate West Africa

If the attempt to obliterate Northwest Airlines flight 253 came as a shock for the United States in the middle of its Christmas holiday, the suggestion that the would-be bomber came from West Africa via al-Qa’ida should not have been a complete surprise.

More than eight years after the 11 September attacks, the United States is still aware of the significance of al-Qa’ida, but the group has appeared less of a clear and present danger as the years have passed. However, less than a week before the Nigerian student Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab boarded his flight to Detroit, The Washington Post had warned, grimly and prominently, of a new source of concern from the terror group.

An article warning of “worrying signs” that al-Qa’ida sympathisers were bringing “a violent brand of Islam to moderate parts of West Africa” catalogued a series of attacks in recent months that have accentuated fears that a group, mainly of Algerians, were threatening to radicalise areas where Muslims were in the majority. Al-Qa’ida in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqim) was held responsible for the execution of the Briton Edwin Dyer and an army colonel in Mali, the killing of an American teacher and a suicide bombing in Mauritania, as well as the kidnapping of two Canadian diplomats in Niger. The recent arrest of three Malian al-Qa’ida suspects in Ghana, over claims that they were conspiring to smuggle South American cocaine through Africa, can be added to evidence that terrorists are taking advantage of disease, poverty, a disenchantment with authority and breakdown of the rule of law in large areas. While Western intelligence services have focused on the growing terrorist threat from East Africa, some of the most dangerous groups have been prospering on the other side of the continent.

Mali has become the centre of al-Qa’ida activity since the group arrived from the north in 2007. The extremist Algerians who made up the Salafist Group for Preaching and Jihad settled in the Malian desert and quickly renamed themselves Aqim. The West African wing of al-Qa’ida has been accused of gun-running, kidnapping, murder and now, for the first time, involvement in the drugs trade.

Intelligence analysts also maintain that Aqim has been seeking new recruits in large, “ungovernable” swathes of nation-states – many of which have large Muslim populations – mimicking al-Qa’ida in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Encouraged by CIA warnings over the growing threat posed by the region, the US has diverted some $500m (£313m) to bolster the counter-terrorism capabilities of 10 countries – although some critics have complained that the effort has not produced lasting results so far.

The near-miss experienced over Detroit last week offered a chilling reminder that al-Qa’ida has not gone away but, in fact, has spread its tentacles far beyond its original base. The Americans and their allies in West African governments will be under intense pressure to turn the tide and prove that they are winning the battle.

Grab a gun or a Molotov cocktail… or, hey!, a rocket launcher and join in:  Blessed are the Peace Prize winners.

Arms dealers the world over are standing and cheering…  as we live in a hideous cartoon.

I missed the thread change. My .02 (spell checked even!)
on the Detroit OMG story as it develops …

Everybody is on board!

About sums it up. Who’s runnin this multi-level marketing pitch this time, anyway? Who’s got the mic at this success story session?
Eric Prince’s in laws of Amway? The Levin Bros. patrons?

About the only thing that WASN’T on board that Detroit flight before it left the Netherlands was the Hague.

Better situated than Chi even, Detroit figures big in the NWO on so many levels:

The crushing of the labor movement, the largest concentration of an Arab / Muslim American community in the U.S., key land and sea trade transit with Canada in the virtual center of both countries, cheaaaaaaap real estate thanks to the combined destruction of so many efforts…Right down to ushering constraints against cash and carry small retail.

Not to mention what an OMG story can do to bolster War as the Answer for the Michigan Delegation…Frankly, in a state totally_fuckin_crushed by the NWO /GWOT, it provides cover to the Levins and Granholm as much as it does the likes of Bachman and Stupak.

I’d have an easier time believing that Rudolf, Donner, and Blitzen got sucked into those Detroit bound jet engines after Santa veered of course, duped by the son of a Nigerian Banker’s EMAIL.

Given where we’re at …..aside from guys from Langley or Benning, you could have couple of Prince’s guys in first class shouting “Fire” , doin the minor Hot Pants on some profiled poor sap who never knew what him. And the same ops backslap up a helpful genuine bystander to the cameras..

I don’t believe a word of it.

Talk about rich: 12/25 . It’s the new 9/11.

NOT TO MENTION how this ablates the British
Parliament’s Iraq Inquiry into the Runup to the Iraq War just as it gets underway..

U.S. news media , flat out, is nothing more than American and Israeli Fascist propaganda. A trickle of truth here or there, that’s how propoganda works, but otherwise , depending on it is like using a chain link colander at sea to capture rain water, and about as useful for filtering one’s own piss to drink at that….

Yes that was due to go forward in January iirc…………

FP of the DFP:

Security expert urges body scans

Had the suspect in Friday’s terrorist attempt walked through what’s known as a backscatter machine, ….
Illustrative link

security screeners would have would have gotten an eyeful of his virtually nude body — as well as the explosive ingredient he allegedly had strapped to his body, an airline security expert said.

Ooo. An airline_security_expert.
Why not just stick a finger up the arse?
What’s next? Colonoscopies?

Perhaps even a dual purpose peripheral for the convenience of the home computer user booking travel online.
I mean, really-
Why wait to discover intent at the airport?
With full colo-rectal scanning capabilities, “The Gerbil” as it might be called, could suppositorially supplant the “mouse” in ferreting out – hey why not – ram a whole zoo up there – as astool in the War on Error…

Golly. Once the experts are able to calibrate the readings, separating discomfit over its use and a normal booking disaster from discomfort and anxiety associated with booking a trrrst disaster….
all will be well.

marisacat - 27 December 2009

Fortunately the body scanners are hideously expensve.

BEFORE 9/11, in 1998… I paid cash for a short plane trip I took to a conference, not for work, for myself. Bought the ticket at a small United office inthe Center downtown I worked in, rt ticket, two night stay… I had a Freq Flyer card with United, the miles were registered on it, I had my passport and several credit cards with me…….

At SFO I was stopped at the ticket counter check-in and had to take my small but too heavy for me suitcase over to a special scanner that ONLY United used at the time, they had 4 dotted around the country. Had to lift it up to the movable bed of the machine, get it myself at the other end then get back in line for the damned check in… with some special mark allowing my luggage t fly in the hold.

Last damned United flight I ever took.

LOL
Time for some Year’s end laughingstock before I skedaddle.

In the latest poll available, (it came out when the radar was down here,) It’s quite remarkable how Dana Houle has been working his magic running Etenza’s campaign in the Dem Minnesota primary….

Since declaring he was going to take Michele Bachman down by managing Elwood Tinklinberg’s campaign, ( Tinklenberg dropped out three weeks later last July … ah~ good times- ) and since he THAT didn’t work out and all…

AND SINCE he found another nipple milking Next Guvnah™ Mike Etenza’s campaign….

Yeh. Well. Etetnza’s bid is now accruing all of the benefits of having Houle run the show…At last glance, after Dana getting paid for 6 months, Etenza is polling at………..6 percent.

In fairness, it’s obvious what’s goin on here, tho… 😉
– That, if given , Oh- somethin like
EIGHT AND A HALF YEARS
Houle will singlehandedly be able to draw in a 100% of the electorate with his 1% a Month Strategy.

In case you ever wondered WHY Van Gogh drank to excess then slashed at his ear

[B]ailey assembled his evidence partly from close study of van Gogh’s Still Life: Drawing Board with Onions. The work was completed at the beginning of 1889, just a month after his injury. It will be the star painting at a new exhibition opening in January at the Royal Academy around the theme of van Gogh and his letters.

It includes an envelope on a table. Bailey examined it microscopically and found the number 67 inside a circle. This was the official mark of a post office in Place des Abbesses, close to the apartment in Montmartre occupied by Theo, an art dealer who regularly provided money for Vincent.

The envelope has a special frank mark that says “New Year’s Day”. The Paris postal museum confirmed that in the second half of the 19th century such a mark was put on envelopes from mid-December onwards.

Bailey believes van Gogh deliberately put the envelope in the painting because of its deep significance.

Janet Nap on ABC .. spinning fast from, where else, San Francisco.

Not doing too well either…. she says everyone did what they were supposed to do.

Earlier I caught the guy who tackled him declaring this was a “planned plot” and he is “al Qaida”.

Tapper is a little more combative than Stephie… maybe they keep him…

Madman in the Marketplace - 27 December 2009

marisacat - 27 December 2009

He was a lot more awake and less deferential than Steph. Here’s hoping.

BooHooHooMan - 27 December 2009

LOL. I’m catching a rerun of the MTP Gibbs…
The 90,000 Watt Teleprompter visible in the reflection on his eyewear. I mean freaky deeky visible. Like a blinding rectangular light beams emanating FROM his pupils. Like matching blotter sized UFO’s just hovering right there on the fucker’s peepers. Jeezis.
I missed 90% of his TPM recital LMAO at the phenomena.

At least his other appearance today with Tapper was in the studio at ABC.

With the MTP tho, David Gregory was softballing in questions from some NBC studio in ole Kentuck where he was on vaca with the fam….but Gibbs – from the new WH Press Briefing Room obviously bereft of staff who were smart enough to roll to Hawaii….Fuck, Gibbs looked he was broadcasting a plea as some last human hostage held on Planet Claire… A Highly recommended double take if you get a rerun on the West Coast…

While complaining about the whole taking-your-shoes-off business in airport security lines, I used to joke that it was a good thing that nobody tried to blow up a plane with explosives hidden in their underwear.

It’s only a matter of time before they make us take off our bras.

Madman in the Marketplace - 27 December 2009

The mass hysteria blends together after a while.

marisacat - 27 December 2009

hey did… the density of the wire material set things off… i’d forgotten that

Madman in the Marketplace - 27 December 2009

Yes, I think it did. I remember reading outraged reports of women being asked to lift their shirts up.

marisacat - 27 December 2009

They’ve made everyone a suspect… very conscious on their part, too… IMO.

Heather-Rose Ryan - 27 December 2009

But notice that the inconvenience is only pushed so far. They want people rattled enough to be conscious of some vague “terrorist” threat, but not so fearful or annoyed that they stop air travel altogether.

Madman in the Marketplace - 27 December 2009

yup, more of that Security Theater

Heather-Rose Ryan - 27 December 2009

I don’t recall that, but I do remember them confiscating knitting needles and manicure scissors. As if anyone is going to take over an airliner with weapons like those.

Tisdale of the Guardian is on board…. and proves that government functionaries, regardless fo party, multitask excellently. Terra everywhere. And they will fight it everywhere…………………….

[D]espite their Af-Pak focus, the US and allies such as Britain have not ignored the Yemen threat. In September, John Brennan, the White House counter-terrorism chief, travelled to Sana’a, and in an unusually strong statement, Barack Obama declared the security of Yemen to be “vital for the security of the United States”.

Since then, Washington has provided unspecified assistance to Yemeni and Saudi crackdowns on jihadi bases and Iranian-backed Shia rebels, amid unconfirmed reports that US special forces are in the country.

Two air strikes on al-Qaida strongholds in Yemen, the latest on Christmas Eve, reportedly killed up to 60 militants. It remains unclear whether these unusual operations were influenced by knowledge of a plot to blow up a US airliner…………………………………

That tends to get a smile outta most folks, and that gets me by. They boys are actually gone with their dad to his parents’ house until Tuesday….feels a little odd around here…many emotions and to top it off I have chest and sinus goo…oh, wait, I drifting into complaining! 🙂

Madman in the Marketplace - 27 December 2009

Heather-Rose Ryan - 27 December 2009

TSA Making Flying More Miserable

This is mind-numbingly stupid. As Radley Balko notes, these measures “wouldn’t even have done anything to prevent the attempt over the weekend. The guy was in his seat when he tried to light the explosive device. And the passenger who confronted him got out of his seat to do it.”

We’re simply going to make people miserable for no apparent reason. There have been precisely three attempts over the last eight years to commit acts of terrorism aboard commercial aircraft. All of them clownishly inept and easily thwarted by the passengers. How many tens of thousands of flights have been incident free? And, yet, we’re going to make hundreds of thousands of people endure transcontinental flights without reading materials or the ability to use the restroom?

marisacat - 27 December 2009

I haven’t gotten to this one yet, reading the Schneier you linked to from Nov 9, really good article, thanks for linking…

marisacat - 27 December 2009

He’s got a new post up… http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2009/12/separating_expl.html

And what sort of magical thinking is behind the rumored TSA rule about keeping passengers seated during the last hour of flight? Do we really think the terrorist won’t think of blowing up their improvised explosive devices during the first hour of flight?

For years I’ve been saying this:

Only two things have made flying safer [since 9/11]: the reinforcement of cockpit doors, and the fact that passengers know now to resist hijackers.

POLITICO Breaking News:
—————————————————–

According to a statement from White House spokesman Bill Burton, President Obama “was notified shortly after 9:00 a.m. Hawaiian time” of an incident regarding “an unruly passenger” on a flight arriving in Detroit today. From the statement: “The President stressed the importance of maintaining heightened security measures for all air travel and gave instructions to set up another secure teleconference briefing as soon as possible.”

This is really cutting into his gym time.

From Saturday:

HONOLULU — President Barack Obama’s security teams briefed the vacationing president on threats facing the United States and he directed that heightened airport security measures remain in place as officials investigate a failed terror attack aboard a Detroit-bound plane.

White House officials began their Saturday at 4 a.m. in Hawaii – 9 a.m. on the clock in Washington – to prepare with counterparts across the government a briefing for Obama. National Security Council chief of staff Denis McDonough in Hawaii, homeland security and counterterrorism adviser John Brennan and others in Washington spoke with Obama at 6:20 a.m. by secure telephone conference call at the first family’s rented vacation home.

The call lasted less than 15 minutes. Obama left immediately afterward for a trip to the gym.
