This from Rick Klein’s The Note of Tuesday:

“I think that this gets into a big mush. So let’s just clarify: I didn’t make a bunch of deals,” the president told ABC’s Diane Sawyer Monday. “There is a legislative process that is taking place in Congress and I am happy to own up to the fact that I have not changed Congress and how it operates the way I would have liked.”

Okaaay……… I so believe that one! Well.. the “mush” part anyway!

And this (courtesy of the Mike Allen Playbook of Tuesday)… the DSCC memo to the assembled multitude on how to win win win in November. To be honest, I had thought Menendez was a bit smarter than this (I am sure BHHM will fill me in!), but then! he likely is not even trying…:

‘The memo urges Democratic candidates to force their opponents to answer a series of questions:

‘Do you believe that Barack Obama is a U.S. citizen? Do you think the 10th Amendment bars Congress from issuing regulations like minimum health care coverage standards? Do you think programs like Social Security and Medicare represent socialism and should never have been created in the first place? Do you think President Obama is a socialist? Do you think America should return to a gold standard?’

If a Republican candidate says no to any of the questions, the memo says Democrats should ‘make their primary opponent or conservative activists know it. This will cause them to take heat from their primary opponents and could likely provoke a flip-flop, as it already has several times with Mark Kirk in Illinois.’ … Menendez spoke last week at a private Democratic Caucus meeting, where he urged all his party’s candidates to ‘run scared.’

So, what is new? This is new strategy? When did the Democrats NOT carry the Republicans water for them?

The New York Times refuses to confirm or deny a report that its Jerusalem bureau chief, Ethan Bronner, has a child who is an enlisted member of the Israeli Defense Force–even though such a relationship would pose a serious conflict of interest.

The Electronic Intifada website (1/25/10), following a tip, asked Bronner whether it was true that he had a son in the IDF. EI got a reply from Times foreign editor Susan Chira:

Ethan Bronner referred your query to me, the foreign editor. Here is my comment: Mr. Bronner’s son is a young adult who makes his own decisions. At the Times, we have found Mr. Bronner’s coverage to be scrupulously fair and we are confident that will continue to be the case. ….

“These days quite a few people are frustrated with President Obama’s failure to challenge conservative ideology. The spending freeze — about which the best thing you can say in its favor is that it’s a transparently cynical PR stunt — has, for many, been the final straw: rhetorically, it’s a complete concession to Reaganism.

But why should we be surprised? Here’s one from the vault. Two years ago, I was deeply frustrated with Obama’s apparent endorsement of the Reagan myth.

There was a lot of delusion among progressives who convinced themselves, in the face of clear evidence to the contrary, that Obama was a strong champion of their values. He wasn’t and isn’t.

That doesn’t mean that there’s no difference between the parties, that everything would have been the same if McCain had won. But progressives are in the process of losing a big chance to change the narrative, and that’s largely because they have a leader who never had any inclination to do so.”

I had to reread that last paragraph several times to fully appriciate the incoherency. For all intents and purposes, these are four completely separate paragraph. The first states the obvious, but leaves out that the author himself has been leading the chorus of “It cannot be!”‘s in the past week.

The second references a past editorial where Obama praised Reagan and Krugman said “boo”. Apropos of nothing, since Clinton enacted a spending freeze too (and as with Reagan and Clinton, defense spending was largely exempt).

The third states that the author knew all along Barack was that way, which raises two points, why he’s professing disappointment with things working out exactly as he predicted they would, and the entire fourth paragraph, where he state’s progressives are missing a chance to “change the narrative”. Apparently since we had no hope of actually changing the policy, we just aren’t lying to ourselves well enough. Do I have that right PK?

And, of course, since his verbal train has run into the side of the mountain, derailed, and plunged burning into a crevasse, he puts in a statement that we should still vote for Democrats because they are “different”.

Different?!?

But then I said back in 2008 being agaisnt Obama did nto mean I was FOR Hillary. They both were set ups from the party… they were BOTH going to drag the party, or slices of it, with them…

And IMO the party shoehorned Ob in (they did throw votes to him from the Dem conflab at the end, ntim) as many were sick and tired of the Clintons and the remnants of their machine.

For while the people who sent us here have different backgrounds and different stories and different beliefs, the anxieties they face are the same. The aspirations they hold are shared. A job that pays the bill. A chance to get ahead. Most of all, the ability to give their children a better life.

You know what else they share? They share a stubborn resilience in the face of adversity. After one of the most difficult years in our history, they remain busy building cars and teaching kids; starting businesses and going back to school. They are coaching little league and helping their neighbors. As one woman wrote to me, “We are strained but hopeful, struggling but encouraged.”

It is because of this spirit – this great decency and great strength – that I have never been more hopeful about America’s future than I am tonight. Despite our hardships, our union is strong. We do not give up. We do not quit. We don’t allow fear or division to break our spirit. In this new decade, it’s time the American people get a government that matches their decency; that embodies their strength. And tonight, I’d like to talk about how together, we can deliver on that promise.

By the time I’m finished speaking tonight, more Americans will have lost their health insurance. Millions will lose it this year. Our deficit will grow. Premiums will go up. Co-pays will go up. Patients will be denied the care they need. Small business owners will continue to drop coverage altogether. I will not walk away from these Americans. And neither should the people in this chamber.

Rather than fight the same tired battles that have dominated Washington for decades, it’s time for something new. Let’s try common sense. Let’s invest in our people without leaving them a mountain of debt. Let’s meet our responsibility to the people who sent us here.

To do that, we have to recognize that we face more than a deficit of dollars right now. We face a deficit of trust – deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works that have been growing for years. To close that credibility gap we must take action on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue to end the outsized influence of lobbyists; to do our work openly; and to give our people the government they deserve.

That’s what I came to Washington to do. That’s why – for the first time in history – my Administration posts our White House visitors online. And that’s why we’ve excluded lobbyists from policy-making jobs or seats on federal boards and commissions.

But we cannot stop there. It’s time to require lobbyists to disclose each contact they make on behalf of a client with my Administration or Congress. And it’s time to put strict limits on the contributions that lobbyists give to candidates for federal office. Last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests – including foreign companies – to spend without limit in our elections. Well I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, and worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people, and that’s why I’m urging Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps to right this wrong.

I’m also calling on Congress to continue down the path of earmark reform. You have trimmed some of this spending and embraced some meaningful change. But restoring the public trust demands more. For example, some members of Congress post some earmark requests online. Tonight, I’m calling on Congress to publish all earmark requests on a single website before there’s a vote so that the American people can see how their money is being spent.

Damn. I should have added “earmark” to the drinking game list.

They are very specific about which documents show this and they want them made public. If they are made public before the confirmation vote, Bernanke is obviously in a lot of trouble. Americans who hid money from the Internal Revenue Service in secret Swiss bank accounts may escape disclosure, at least for now.

An agreement between the U.S. and Swiss governments that was supposed to blow the cover on 4,450 accounts at Switzerland’s largest bank is in danger of collapse. The Swiss government said Wednesday that it has suspended the disclosure of information to the U.S. government under the agreement and may seek to renegotiate.

The announcement came days after a Swiss court ruled that it would be illegal for Switzerland to comply with the August 2009 accord.

More bullshit here..The “deal” was originally for up to 300,000 U.S. account holders , money laundering tax cheats……
BTW, it just so happens the Chief of Security of the World Economic Forum, alone in his hotel room, just up and shot himself yesterday in Switzerland ahead of the conference coming up in Davos next week.

Anyways, Here’s some more laughs on the Swiss obliging their clients here…..the Americans and Israelis are surely relieved …saves them them from putting on a show…

The court was confirming something that Swiss officials had taken pains to obscure: To avert potentially ruinous U.S. legal action against Swiss banking giant UBS last year, the Swiss government had agreed to weaken Switzerland’s vaunted standards of bank secrecy.

The court essentially declared that long-standing secrecy protections trumped the agreement negotiated last year. The decision came in a test case involving a UBS account holder who was fighting to stay in the shadows.

And this is following the 5 and a half Billion Dollar default two days ago in New York of the largest US real estate deal EVAH, what some analysts are calling the “poster child” for the commercial real estate collapse which is no longer possible to be hidden from view…

people here, eligible for UnEmp Ins extensions, lost weeks of payments (tho of course it just extends at the other end) right over T’giving and Xmas as the congress lollygagged. That DEM congress…

What is coming, I don’t know. Everything continues to go up, including bridge tolls (just today, our state owned Bay Area bridges are now 6.00 each way at peak communte) and fares (70.00 a month for the SF MUNI “fast pass”, and so on) and all the rest, basics.

More importantly, the cost of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will continue to skyrocket. That’s why I’ve called for a bipartisan, Fiscal Commission, modeled on a proposal by Republican Judd Gregg and Democrat Kent Conrad. This can’t be one of those Washington gimmicks that lets us pretend we solved a problem. The Commission will have to provide a specific set of solutions by a certain deadline. Yesterday, the Senate blocked a bill that would have created this commission. So I will issue an executive order that will allow us to go forward, because I refuse to pass this problem on to another generation of Americans.

And there you go. Say goodbye to social security.
