The young one is Favreau… responsible, along with the white guys behind Ob AND of course Obby himself, for the 2008 speeches.

******************************************************

oh just a couple of snips that are lying around, and seem appropriate to underline the SOTU speech…

This from Rick Klein’s The Note of Tuesday:

“I think that this gets into a big mush. So let’s just clarify: I didn’t make a bunch of deals,” the president told ABC’s Diane Sawyer Monday. “There is a legislative process that is taking place in Congress and I am happy to own up to the fact that I have not changed Congress and how it operates the way I would have liked.”

Okaaay………  I so believe that one!  Well.. the “mush” part anyway!

And this (courtesy of the Mike Allen Playbook of Tuesday)… the DSCC memo to the assembled multitude on how to win win win in November.  To be honest, I had thought Menendez was a bit smarter than this (I am sure BHHM will fill me in!), but then!  he likely is not even trying…:

‘The memo urges Democratic candidates to force their opponents to answer a series of questions:

‘Do you believe that Barack Obama is a U.S. citizen? Do you think the 10th Amendment bars Congress from issuing regulations like minimum health care coverage standards? Do you think programs like Social Security and Medicare represent socialism and should never have been created in the first place? Do you think President Obama is a socialist? Do you think America should return to a gold standard?’

If a Republican candidate says no to any of the questions, the memo says Democrats should ‘make their primary opponent or conservative activists know it. This will cause them to take heat from their primary opponents and could likely provoke a flip-flop, as it already has several times with Mark Kirk in Illinois.’ … Menendez spoke last week at a private Democratic Caucus meeting, where he urged all his party’s candidates to ‘run scared.’

So, what is new?  This is new strategy?  When did the Democrats NOT carry the Republicans water for them?

hmmm?  When?

As for the speech, when is 6PM Pacific… 9PM Eastern.

Well I hardly bother to open the FAIR emails anymore, but did open this one…. Not too surprising………

Does NYT’s Top Israel Reporter Have a Son in the IDF?

Foreign editor treats potential conflict as none of our business

1/27/10

The New York Times refuses to confirm or deny a report that its Jerusalem bureau chief, Ethan Bronner, has a child who is an enlisted member of the Israeli Defense Force–even though such a relationship would pose a serious conflict of interest.

The Electronic Intifada website (1/25/10), following a tip, asked Bronner whether it was true that he had a son in the IDF. EI got a reply from Times foreign editor Susan Chira:

Ethan Bronner referred your query to me, the foreign editor. Here is my comment: Mr. Bronner’s son is a young adult who makes his own decisions. At the Times, we have found Mr. Bronner’s coverage to be scrupulously fair and we are confident that will continue to be the case. ….

marisacat - 27 January 2010

Apparentlyt eh WH has distributed SOTU talking points to allies …. geesh. NTIM but it is gonna to fall flat.

Snips… Ben Smith has the full text (fwiw):

From the document:

Faced with daunting challenges, Obama took strong and politically difficult steps to rescue the country from a potential second Great Depression; to rebuild the economy for the long term, so businesses are thriving, the middle class is growing and all our families are more secure; and to restore America’s leadership in the world, as we wrestle with the global challenges of the 21st century.

Also:

President Obama has also signed historic legislation — from extending unemployment benefits [gah… Bush did that twice, tho it lacked for broad reporting…. sigh… Mcat] to expanding health insurance for children to ensuring that women receive equal pay for equal work [Ledbetter is a looog time ago by now! – Mcat]— that, for decades to come, will improve and strengthen the lives of everyday Americans and working families throughout the country.

And:

On a whole range of issues, President Obama has remained faithful to the central commitments of his campaign and he has begun to deliver changes that the American people expect and deserve. …

I’m thinking if people just don’t laugh out loud it will be lucky… and who is going to throw rotten tomatoes at their own TeeVee?

2. ts - 27 January 2010

If the networks wanted to be ironic they’d add an echo to the soundtrack to emphasize how hollow the words are going to sound.

3. BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

To be honest, I had thought Menendez was a bit smarter than this (I am sure BHHM will fill me in!),

Soitanly! Count on me to know stupid when I see it!
Even without a mirror!

LOL. But Even I know that that playing to the “Birthers”‘s is about as smart as dog whistling jackals in a fresh, butcher shop tailor’d tenderloin suit. Way to empower anti immigrant sentiment, the damn FOOL. Electorally , The pander to immigrants is dead, people are peeps, everybody is PISSED… as is the nativist bent of the Blue Dogs — won’t help them, won’t save them. To be blunt the only people it works for on the Democratic side are the Jews in the caucus. With the disract ,divide, and conquer. Immigration from Israel retains preferential status.

Yep, pretty much dog whistling in a Roast Beef Suit. Let’s remember tho, Menendez is the guy who has repetitively set up contract pilfering with merely a layer or two between himself and the bagmen…Like Jack Shaw the guy who suicided a few days after he began cooperating with the FBI in the Rabbi’s money laundering stings…

Menendez is one of “America’s Dumbest Criminala” even factoring in his so called “indispensability” as an Hispanic and being “insulated” by the Dem machine in Jersey – yeh THAT’S going well now– 😆 – so we’ll see how long that lasts for Rrrroberto ~ when some of these trials come up and Schumer’s people have HIM take the dive for the DSCC’s crimes and Israeli money funneled through Brooklyn into N. J.

BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

* playing to the Birthers as in elevating , drawing further attention to the issue…

Pretty clear: they are double trip clod~uppling down on the race card…Which will piss people off even more. Who then will all be labeled Nazi’s for breathing in amidst the DO SOMETHING ALREADYzeitgeist..

Harold Ford’s sponsors are running that smelly little turd for the same reason

4. catnip - 27 January 2010

Alrighty then. I’ve had my nap so I won’t fall asleep during what’s sure to be the Greatest SOTU Speech Ever!!! tonite.

BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

Yes, yes you will. LOL.

catnip - 27 January 2010

Well – there’s always sugar. Lots of it.

marisacat - 27 January 2010

I now pt two heaping teaspoons of sugar in my tea (I so miss cofee but can barely drink it anymore… )… it seems a bit of sweetness helps more than just the hot tea……………….

😉

BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

IOZ with the comprehensive preview of tonite’s speech.

LOL.

5. catnip - 27 January 2010

Howard Zinn has passed away.

So many great quotes…

marisacat - 27 January 2010

oh that is a shame…

brinn - 27 January 2010

Damn. His “Voices Live” project is just so amazing.

I will miss his voice.

Madman in the Marketplace - 27 January 2010

oh no!

Will always be thankful for the small “h” history he helped preserve and popularize.

CSTAR - 27 January 2010

I’m very sorry to hear that.

6. BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

Howard Zinn died.

What a decent human being.

PK Today

“These days quite a few people are frustrated with President Obama’s failure to challenge conservative ideology. The spending freeze — about which the best thing you can say in its favor is that it’s a transparently cynical PR stunt — has, for many, been the final straw: rhetorically, it’s a complete concession to Reaganism.

But why should we be surprised? Here’s one from the vault. Two years ago, I was deeply frustrated with Obama’s apparent endorsement of the Reagan myth.

There was a lot of delusion among progressives who convinced themselves, in the face of clear evidence to the contrary, that Obama was a strong champion of their values. He wasn’t and isn’t.

That doesn’t mean that there’s no difference between the parties, that everything would have been the same if McCain had won. But progressives are in the process of losing a big chance to change the narrative, and that’s largely because they have a leader who never had any inclination to do so.”

I had to reread that last paragraph several times to fully appriciate the incoherency. For all intents and purposes, these are four completely separate paragraph. The first states the obvious, but leaves out that the author himself has been leading the chorus of “It cannot be!”‘s in the past week.

The second references a past editorial where Obama praised Reagan and Krugman said “boo”. Apropos of nothing, since Clinton enacted a spending freeze too (and as with Reagan and Clinton, defense spending was largely exempt).

The third states that the author knew all along Barack was that way, which raises two points, why he’s professing disappointment with things working out exactly as he predicted they would, and the entire fourth paragraph, where he state’s progressives are missing a chance to “change the narrative”. Apparently since we had no hope of actually changing the policy, we just aren’t lying to ourselves well enough. Do I have that right PK?

And, of course, since his verbal train has run into the side of the mountain, derailed, and plunged burning into a crevasse, he puts in a statement that we should still vote for Democrats because they are “different”.

Different?!?

marisacat - 27 January 2010

oh the hypocrisy on the part of the so called Left of the Horrible Political Bed, is just rank. And rotten.

But then I said back in 2008 being agaisnt Obama did nto mean I was FOR Hillary. They both were set ups from the party… they were BOTH going to drag the party, or slices of it, with them…

And IMO the party shoehorned Ob in (they did throw votes to him from the Dem conflab at the end, ntim) as many were sick and tired of the Clintons and the remnants of their machine.

Welcome to Ob.

A snake. What else is new.

It was disgusting how the party apparatchiks propped him up during the late primaries and into the GE. There is NO independence.

I was never FOR Geraldine Ferraro eitiher, but I hope she is having a good laugh.

catnip - 27 January 2010

But progressives are in the process of losing a big chance to change the narrative, and that’s largely because they have a leader who never had any inclination to do so.”

He isn’t their “leader”. He keeps throwing them under the bus.

8. catnip - 27 January 2010

Tonite’s drinking game word list (even though I don’t drink alcohol):

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary
________________________________
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 27, 2010

EXCERPTS OF THE PRESIDENT’S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

We face big and difficult challenges. And what the American people hope – what they deserve – is for all of us, Democrats and Republicans, to work through our differences; to overcome the numbing weight of our politics. For while the people who sent us here have different backgrounds and different stories and different beliefs, the anxieties they face are the same. The aspirations they hold are shared. A job that pays the bill. A chance to get ahead. Most of all, the ability to give their children a better life.

You know what else they share? They share a stubborn resilience in the face of adversity. After one of the most difficult years in our history, they remain busy building cars and teaching kids; starting businesses and going back to school. They are coaching little league and helping their neighbors. As one woman wrote to me, “We are strained but hopeful, struggling but encouraged.”

It is because of this spirit – this great decency and great strength – that I have never been more hopeful about America’s future than I am tonight. Despite our hardships, our union is strong. We do not give up. We do not quit. We don’t allow fear or division to break our spirit. In this new decade, it’s time the American people get a government that matches their decency; that embodies their strength. And tonight, I’d like to talk about how together, we can deliver on that promise.

By the time I’m finished speaking tonight, more Americans will have lost their health insurance. Millions will lose it this year. Our deficit will grow. Premiums will go up. Co-pays will go up. Patients will be denied the care they need. Small business owners will continue to drop coverage altogether. I will not walk away from these Americans. And neither should the people in this chamber.

Rather than fight the same tired battles that have dominated Washington for decades, it’s time for something new. Let’s try common sense. Let’s invest in our people without leaving them a mountain of debt. Let’s meet our responsibility to the people who sent us here.

To do that, we have to recognize that we face more than a deficit of dollars right now. We face a deficit of trust – deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works that have been growing for years. To close that credibility gap we must take action on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue to end the outsized influence of lobbyists; to do our work openly; and to give our people the government they deserve.

That’s what I came to Washington to do. That’s why – for the first time in history – my Administration posts our White House visitors online. And that’s why we’ve excluded lobbyists from policy-making jobs or seats on federal boards and commissions.

But we cannot stop there. It’s time to require lobbyists to disclose each contact they make on behalf of a client with my Administration or Congress. And it’s time to put strict limits on the contributions that lobbyists give to candidates for federal office. Last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests – including foreign companies – to spend without limit in our elections. Well I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, and worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people, and that’s why I’m urging Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps to right this wrong.

I’m also calling on Congress to continue down the path of earmark reform. You have trimmed some of this spending and embraced some meaningful change. But restoring the public trust demands more. For example, some members of Congress post some earmark requests online. Tonight, I’m calling on Congress to publish all earmark requests on a single website before there’s a vote so that the American people can see how their money is being spent.

Damn. I should have added “earmark” to the drinking game list.

marisacat - 27 January 2010

to continue down the path of earmark reform.

uh…. they started? As if he cares.

catnip - 27 January 2010

He said last year that earmarks should never be traded for political favours and then he did just that. The man flip flops more than John FlipFlopper Kerry and he expects people to believe him? Just wait until the speech fact checkers parse this one.

catnip - 27 January 2010

oops…italics end after “favours”.

Madman in the Marketplace - 27 January 2010

we ‘Murikans spell that “favors”, ya damned socialist monarchist euro-hippie!

catnip - 27 January 2010

That’s why – for the first time in history – my Administration posts our White House visitors online. And that’s why we’ve excluded lobbyists from policy-making jobs or seats on federal boards and commissions.

Seems to me the WH only made that list public after some public pressure and that not all of those visitors were listed.

And as for the lobbyist purity he’s pouting, just one day short of a year ago, Politico reported on the former lobbyists in his administration. And that was just the beginning. What a crock.

And earmarks? Ben Nelson – Nebraska – earmark for health care ring a bell?

Mon dieu. Train wreck in progress. Grab your binoculars.

marisacat - 27 January 2010

I think it was CREW that led the pressure… and there may have been a suit or a FOIA filing or someting official… cannot quite remember now………………. I do recall that even teh very evening of the day they released names the admin claimed resposnbility for doing it… as if it was voluntary.

Which i twas NOT

marisacat - 27 January 2010

hmm from Plum Line… linking to Stein at HuffPo………… I will be very surprised if it is anything but throwaway line:

Sam Stein reports that Obama will address “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” tonight, though precisely what he’ll say is a mystery.

catnip - 27 January 2010

Obama: ‘Don’t ask me how the fuck to fix this mess and don’t tell me how to do it (you dirty fucking hippies) either.’ (?)

10. mattes - 27 January 2010

Bernanke Is A Political Time Bomb, Stiglitz Says He Would Take Fed Position

Republicans appear to have documents linking Ben Bernanke to a decision to give the backdoor bailouts at AIG despite staff recommendations. They are very specific about which documents show this and they want them made public. If they are made public before the confirmation vote, Bernanke is obviously in a lot of trouble. But there’s a much worse scenario.

Swiss banks to curtail release of information about U.S. depositors

By David S. Hilzenrath
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, January 27, 2010; 4:14 PM

Americans who hid money from the Internal Revenue Service in secret Swiss bank accounts may escape disclosure, at least for now.
{ 🙄 Sure – Sayonara! – BHHM }

An agreement between the U.S. and Swiss governments that was supposed to blow the cover on 4,450 accounts at Switzerland’s largest bank is in danger of collapse. The Swiss government said Wednesday that it has suspended the disclosure of information to the U.S. government under the agreement and may seek to renegotiate.

The announcement came days after a Swiss court ruled that it would be illegal for Switzerland to comply with the August 2009 accord.

More bullshit here..The “deal” was originally for up to 300,000 U.S. account holders , money laundering tax cheats……
BTW, it just so happens the Chief of Security of the World Economic Forum, alone in his hotel room, just up and shot himself yesterday in Switzerland ahead of the conference coming up in Davos next week.

Anyways, Here’s some more laughs on the Swiss obliging their clients here…..the Americans and Israelis are surely relieved …saves them them from putting on a show…

The court was confirming something that Swiss officials had taken pains to obscure: To avert potentially ruinous U.S. legal action against Swiss banking giant UBS last year, the Swiss government had agreed to weaken Switzerland’s vaunted standards of bank secrecy.

The court essentially declared that long-standing secrecy protections trumped the agreement negotiated last year. The decision came in a test case involving a UBS account holder who was fighting to stay in the shadows.

And this is following the 5 and a half Billion Dollar default two days ago in New York of the largest US real estate deal EVAH, what some analysts are calling the “poster child” for the commercial real estate collapse which is no longer possible to be hidden from view…

marisacat - 27 January 2010

BTW, it just so happens the Chief of Security of the World Economic Forum, alone in his hotel room, just up and shot himself yesterday in Switzerland ahead of the conference coming up in Davos next week.

I saw that… and boy is it NOT getting covered

BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

The latest revelations.on the 08 whallop….the drip drip drip…the retrospectives now about the backdoor dealings while the quants and their bosses and the GS/Rubinite political fixer class were laboring to keep a lid on it while watching it all implode…same shit now with the second wave methinks….this pathetic little tweet about cutting spending about the best effort the WH can do in trying to get out in front of it…

Thinking about what you said last thread about him having lost Congressional support in his own Party…It’s as ugly out in the states…..Huge lines for public assistance. Here in Jersey short of people coming unglued in Social Service Offices, its 3 months for people to get help because of the backlog..And the handler’s of this asshole who is going to speak tonite think The Second Wave’s the Charm ? …and they’ll push it off on the States??

They already had their run of ‘Freeze” ,
specifically “Everybody Freeze!” in the global markets last year while trying cover up this second ‘V” in the “W” dip of what looks to be one of many dips in a very long awwwwwwwwwwwful MESS.

marisacat - 27 January 2010

Here in Jersey short of people coming unglued in Social Service Offices, its 3 months for people to get help because of the backlog.

people here, eligible for UnEmp Ins extensions, lost weeks of payments (tho of course it just extends at the other end) right over T’giving and Xmas as the congress lollygagged. That DEM congress…

What is coming, I don’t know. Everything continues to go up, including bridge tolls (just today, our state owned Bay Area bridges are now 6.00 each way at peak communte) and fares (70.00 a month for the SF MUNI “fast pass”, and so on) and all the rest, basics.

Obama to appeal for revived health care support

47. Madman in the Marketplace - 27 January 2010

Letter from Mark Twain:

I personally will think of this letter as a review of this speech, 105 years ahead of time:

The person who wrote the advertisements is without doubt the most ignorant person now alive on the planet; also without doubt he is an idiot, an idiot of the 33rd degree, and scion of an ancestral procession of idiots stretching back to the Missing Link. It puzzles me to make out how the same hand could have constructed your letter and your advertisements. Puzzles fret me, puzzles annoy me, puzzles exasperate me; and always, for a moment, they arouse in me an unkind state of mind toward the person who has puzzled me. A few moments from now my resentment will have faded and passed and I shall probably even be praying for you; but while there is yet time I hasten to wish that you may take a dose of your own poison by mistake, and enter swiftly into the damnation which you and all other patent medicine assassins have so remorselessly earned and do so richly deserve.

The Fierce Urgency of “Let Me Know”…on Health Care.

“Let’s Get it Done..”

How original.

ts - 27 January 2010

Larry the Cable Guy’s gonna sue him for copyright infringement.

CSTAR - 27 January 2010

“Let’s Get it Done..”

Sounds like a sex-worker talking to a client.

ts - 27 January 2010

Maybe he meant to say: “Let’s get it over with”

49. catnip - 27 January 2010

I think Mitch McConnell is an apple doll.

50. catnip - 27 January 2010

Starting in 2011, we are prepared to freeze government spending for three years. Spending related to our national security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will not be affected. But all other discretionary government programs will. Like any cash-strapped family, we will work within a budget to invest in what we need and sacrifice what we don’t. And if I have to enforce this discipline by veto, I will.

But you won’t veto a bill that doesn’t have the public option?

marisacat - 27 January 2010

plus it was HIS idea to freeze the COLA for two years on Soc Security. As of months ago.

Gah.

51. catnip - 27 January 2010

Now, even after paying for what we spent on my watch, we will still face the massive deficit we had when I took office. More importantly, the cost of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will continue to skyrocket. That’s why I’ve called for a bipartisan, Fiscal Commission, modeled on a proposal by Republican Judd Gregg and Democrat Kent Conrad. This can’t be one of those Washington gimmicks that lets us pretend we solved a problem. The Commission will have to provide a specific set of solutions by a certain deadline. Yesterday, the Senate blocked a bill that would have created this commission. So I will issue an executive order that will allow us to go forward, because I refuse to pass this problem on to another generation of Americans.

And there you go. Say goodbye to social security.

marisacat - 27 January 2010

I read tho the prposed commision with ahve no power … no ability to force a vote.

I am sure they will get to entitlements in some fashion.

catnip - 27 January 2010

He’s a fool to even touch those programs in this environment.

52. CSTAR - 27 January 2010

I didn’t watch it, but from the comments, it sounds depressing.

53. BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

💡 ➡ {slowly} ..Yehhhhh ..{head tilt}
What IS IT with all the purple?

Is it some dumbass cute color coded ‘Purple State” head nod?
WTF? How Lame, if so..

This speech is so scraping bottom with stock palaver..
“to give the people the government they deserve” …
“It’s time to put strict limits on lobbyists..”
“I’m calling on Congress to make progress on earmark Reform”
“Democrats AND Republicans”

54. catnip - 27 January 2010

It must be 150 degrees in there with all of that hot air floating around.

catnip - 27 January 2010

56. BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

I don’t have cable, mercifully I can meter the punditry in small web clips later but I’d be surprised if many gush about it…I mean how can you gush about the same speech he’s given since he declared in Springfield 3 YEARS AGO.

57. BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

Uh boy.
Now the point point clap clap Military and Cop “Hero” Worship™

58. ts - 27 January 2010

How are they going to spin this tomorrow? Normally a SOTU has every promise including the Moon, or at least sending astronauts there. This has…a commission…a spending freeze…a small increase in the child care credit…why we had to bail out the banksters but never got around to bailing you out. It’s like the world’s biggest souffle.

catnip - 27 January 2010

He cut the program that would have sent astronauts to the moon.

It’s like the world’s biggest souffle.

Less taste, less filling.

BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

Spin it as skillfull…STAYING “THE COURSE” ??!??!??

marisacat - 27 January 2010

BooHooHooMan - 27 January 2010

marisacat - 27 January 2010

yes I think that is the transformaton.

People forget tho, Reagan left office with murderously low numbers. The R have spent 20 + relentless years rebuilding him… with plenty of help from the Dems, of course.

60. marisacat - 27 January 2010
