Not surprising, but VERY revealing…………

But – elections matter……………… right?

2. marisacat - 5 February 2010

Not that it means anything……

Sen. Al Franken ripped into White House senior adviser David Axelrod this week during a tense, closed-door session with Senate Democrats.

Five sources who were in the room tell POLITICO that Franken criticized Axelrod for the administration’s failure to provide clarity or direction on health care and the other big bills it wants Congress to enact.

The sources said Franken was the most outspoken senator in the meeting, which followed President Barack Obama’s question-and-answer session with Senate Democrats at the Newseum on Wednesday. But they also said the Minnesotan wasn’t the only angry Democrat in the room.

“There was a lot of frustration in there,” said a Democratic senator who declined to be identified.

“People were hot,” another Democratic senator said. ….

Israel’s Lieberman cautions Syria

The Israeli foreign minister has cautioned Syria against drawing his country into another war, saying the Syrian army would be defeated and its regime would collapse in any future conflict.

Al-Assad said on Wednesday that Israel “is not serious about wanting peace” [File:EPA]

Avigdor Lieberman’s comments on Thursday followed accusations from the Syrian president a day earlier that Israel is “driving the region towards war, not peace”.

The Syrians “have crossed a red line that cannot be ignored,” Lieberman said in a speech at Bar-Ilan University, near Tel Aviv.

“Our message must be clear to [Syrian president Bashar al-Assad]: “In the next war, not only will you lose but you and your family will lose power.”

Lieberman’s comments prompted Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, to issue a statement reassuring Syria that Israel seeks peace.

So. Franken and Axelrod, Schumer and Bloomie, Avigdor and Bibi…

KABUL, Afghanistan — NATO and the Afghan military are about to launch their biggest joint offensive of the war , and they appear to be making sure the Taliban know they are coming.

The deliberate publicizing of the offensive — with news conferences, press releases and public pronouncements — is relatively unusual for the military. There could be several strategic benefits — and risks. If Taliban were to withdraw in advance of the offensive and civilians had ample warning, there could be fewer military and civilian casualties.

“In some cases it may make sense, with a population-centered strategy, to give an awareness where U.S. and Afghan forces are going, and give an opportunity for Taliban and insurgent forces to clear out,” said Seth Jones, a RAND Corporation senior political scientist who specializes in Afghanistan. Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the American military commander in Afghanistan, has emphasized a counterinsurgency strategy that focuses on reducing civilian casualties and convincing the local population that the Americans and NATO can protect them.

Breaking News from ABCNEWS.com:

Unemployment Rate Declines to 9.7 Percent With 20,000 Jobs Lost [8:49 a.m. ET]

For more on this and other breaking news go to ABCNews.com: http://abcnews.go.com?nwltr=bn

ts - 5 February 2010

It was the annual benchmark revisions. The unemployment and employment data comes from separate surveys. The employment data got revised downward 902,000 due to the benchmark. So from the peak in December 2007 the economy has lost 8.4 million jobs rather than 7.5 million.

Unemployment revises their data from census population controls and that revision increased the labor force by 249,000, increased employment by 243,000 and decreased unemployment by 5,000. The net effect was to decrease the unemployment rate by 0.3%. I note that the seasonal factors for January look a little weird, the unadjusted unemployment rate is 10.6%.

Usually what happens when you get a month where both surveys diverge, they’ll track back together over the following months. I think the unemployment rate will jump back up Feb-Apr unless we start adding a lot of jobs.

marisacat - 5 February 2010

well there is the never counted, “did not seek work – gave up” and fell off the unemployment rolls.

The REAL number hs to be deadly. Despite that creep Paulson, with Ob dutifully repeating it, that wihtou bank bail out unemp would be 25%.

Truly, if you wrote this people would make an accusation of TOO MUCH DRAMA, more on the guy who won the Dem nom for Lt Gov in Illinois:

TOP TALKER — Ill. Dem fracas — Chicago Tribune banner,

‘I have no intention of stepping down’ — Lt. Gov. nominee digs in amid new revelations: Quinn wins nomination as running mate faces new questions about child support payments, steroid use and the alleged choking of ex-wife,’ by David Heinzmann, John Chase and Monique Garcia:

‘Gov. Pat Quinn finally won the Democratic governor nomination Thursday, only to find himself trying to dump a running mate who has been accused of abusing women, failing to pay child support and spending lavishly on extramarital affairs. While Quinn suggested that Scott Lee Cohen drop out for the good of the Democratic Party, the pawnbroker and political neophyte vowed to continue as a lieutenant governor candidate after voters nominated him Tuesday. ‘My honesty and integrity in putting it out there is the best thing that could happen to the party,’ Cohen told the Tribune. His ex-wife, Debra York-Cohen, appeared with him Thursday as part of a media blitz aimed at repairing his image. York-Cohen said she stood by allegations she made during the couple’s divorce, but that Cohen’s bad behavior took place when he was using steroids. ‘It was a short period of time, and it’s certainly not something that the people of Illinois need to be con-cerned with,’ York-Cohen said.

‘But new disclosures showed that even as Cohen was spending more than $2 million of his own money to run TV and radio ads for his campaign, his ex-wife in December was accusing him in court of being $54,000 behind in child support payments. Cohen and his ex-wife declined to discuss the ongoing case. The latest details came after the Tribune reported Wednesday that police and court records from an October 2005 incident show that Cohen’s then-girlfriend alleged he put a knife to her throat and pushed her head against a wall. Public records show that the woman, his 24-year-old girlfriend at the time, pleaded guilty to prostitution that same month. The misdemeanor charges against Cohen were later dropped when the woman did not show up for court. Cohen also denied allega¬tions he physically assaulted her and used a knife. Cohen said Thursday he didn’t know the woman was a prostitute and met her when he got a ‘straight massage’ at the Eden Spa. But a Glenview police report indicates his ex-girlfriend freely told an undercover officer posing as a massage customer that women there performed sex acts for money.’

Stay tuned, Illinois should go really well. I read that the Dems did not vet him as they thought he had no chance to win.

Who comes from Illinois again? Who else? Ob, Rahm, Axelrod?

Who’s running the country?

(my own answer is, Gates is)

BooHooHooMan - 5 February 2010

LOL.
Abdominal Binders ON!
From the guys Campaign web page,

“I have no intention of stepping down or stepping aside. When the facts come to light, after my ex-wife and ex-girlfriend speak, the people of Illinois can decide, and I will listen to them directly.I am asking my ex-wife and ex-girlfriend to come forward and to talk with the media. There are questions, and I will provide all answers honestly and openly. I only ask for time to do the interviews. 2005 was a difficult time in my life. I was going through a divorce, and I started running with a fast group. I was in a tumultuous relationship with the woman I was dating. We had a fight, but I never touched her. She called the police, however, she never came to court, and the charges were dismissed. I realized this relationship was not healthy, I ended it, and we parted amicably.”

–Scott Lee Cohen

“I tried to tell everyone about this early on. I wanted to talk about all of these issues, but everyone wrote me off, and said I didn’t have a chance to win. Now that I’m the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor, the day after the election, there are questions. I am happy to answer any and all questions; I just need time to do so.”

Oh Take your TIME, Motherfucker, Take your TIIIIIME. LOL.

Could answer to state’s woes be a pawnbroker?
He’s poured $100K of his own cash into lieutenant gov bid
BY MARK BROWN Sun-Times Columnist
original article
Chicago pawnbroker Scott Lee Cohen has launched a campaign to become Illinois’ next lieutenant governor.

His chances are so slim that I told him he’d be better off donating his money to charity.

Even his own campaign consultant says he tried to talk him out of making the race, but the best he could do was persuade him not to run for governor.

Undaunted by such negativity, Cohen has donated $100,000 of his own money to a campaign fund and promises it will total closer to $240,000 by the time he formally announces his candidacy Wednesday for the Democratic nomination.

All this proves to me is that pawnbrokers are as capable of throwing away their money on quixotic political ambitions as those in other lines of work, although to be fair, neither Cohen nor I can remember any other pawnbroker actually seeking public office.

LOL. AND THAT”S WHERE HE SNIPPED THE ARTICLE.
WHAT HE LEAVES OUT BEGINS IN THE NEXT PARAGRAPH.

I first met Cohen in November at his pawnshop,State Jewelry & Loans, 48th and Ashland, for a story Cohen was circulating about a man who had pawned his diamond-and-ruby-encrusted false teeth, plucking them right out of his mouth in exchange for a $1,500 loan.

It was a jaw dropper even by the we’ve-seen-it-all standards of the pawn business. Cohen said the man told him he needed the money to send his daughter to college. He has yet to return to reclaim the teeth.

Referring to our meeting that day, Cohen said he thought it would have been obvious to me he was somebody motivated primarily by a desire to help people.

Actually, I’d figured him for a shrewd but friendly businessman whose main interest was in making money, which is totally understandable in a pawnbroker though sometimes problematic for an elected official.

Ever since the false-teeth episode, though, the 43-year-old Cohen has been pursuing the limelight with gusto.

Over the holidays, he got media attention by giving away free turkeys to poor people in the south suburbs and on the South Side. He explained he did so partly in an effort to market his new business venture distributing environmentally friendly cleaning supplies.

What really hooked Cohen, however, was launching his “Rod Must Resign” campaign, which tried to build public pressure for former Gov. Blajojevich to step down after his arrest. With the help of the Grainger Terry public relations firm, Cohen launched a Web site, held a small demonstration at the Thompson Center and passed out buttons.

Obviously, Blagojevich never resigned, but Cohen said he thought the effort was effective just the same…..

OBVIOUSLY this guy is a frolicker and is going to hold on to the bitter, rollicking, hilarious end.

Hey, HAVE AT, man. Well Played! 😆

They’ve already started pulling the Ob statues down… literally…

BooHooHooMan - 5 February 2010

LOL.

AKARTA, Indonesia —A recently-erected statue of President Obama as a 10-year-old boy will be removed from a public park here, city officials said Friday, bowing to vociferous criticism on Facebook one month before Mr. Obama visits Indonesia

The statue will relocated as soon as possible to an elementary school that Mr. Obama attended during the four years he spent as a child here , the governor of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo, told reporters.

A shame, really .
That would be perfect for the Neutered Poodle Roots Benefit Auction.

marisacat - 5 February 2010

hey NYCO!

Just reading that Holder has canceled a trip to Columbia to pick up an award. Blaming the weather.

I think he is scared to go…………………….

Tidbits on Rahm spending the year placating Lindsay Graham, or so the story goes.

Wow. That was quick.

But what’s even more interesting is that the government actually listened to the FB protesters and did something. Apparently, they have ‘democracy’ over there. But when an overwhelming majority of yanks want a public option? The response is FU.

Judge wants ex-Edwards aide in court, with tape

And Jello. AND Whipped Cream. Per order. Assorted Fruit. etc.
Bring it all in, Son, whatever ya got.
We gotta get this back to the rightful owners.
Which may well be Bunny Mellon for bankrolling it all. LOL.
The poor Judge. LOL. Trying to bring some resolution…
I love the last bit in the latest WaPo squib, where Young’s lawyers are obviously playin.

PITTSBORO, N.C. — A judge wants a former aide to John Edwards to appear in a North Carolina court along with any copies of private videotapes that are being demanded by Edwards’ former mistress.

Superior Court Judge Abraham Penn Jones has scheduled a hearing Friday for Andrew Young, who has said he has a video of Edwards having sex with a woman.

The judge wrote in court documents that Young could be held in civil or criminal contempt if he does not personally appear in court along with all copies of the items that Edwards’ mistress Rielle (ree-EHL’) Hunter is seeking.

Hunter won a restraining order to get back photos and what she called a private video she made in 2006. Young’s attorneys say the tape Hunter wants appears to be different than the one he has.

So. Who knew?
That in addition to TWO America’s there maybe in fact,
TWO (or more!) horn dogglin’ millworker sex tapes out there.. 😆

So much for Chastity You Can Believe In.

marisacat - 5 February 2010

oh that gave me a real laugh. Yeah it has sounded liek there were two tapes. From different times in the association, shall we say.

GOOD LUCK to them all!

11. marisacat - 5 February 2010

hmmm a bit of the Tapper v Gibbs… from Feb 4, previous ot this he he asked about the jobs numbers……………

[T]APPER: Just a follow-up: I’ve asked you guys a few times what the president was referring to when he spoke to the Republican — in the Republican Conference on Friday, he talked about stray cats and dogs getting into the health care reform legislation that would prevent patients from being able to choose their plan, choose their doctor, even though that has been a White House pledge. Have you guys made any progress on finding out what he was talking about?

GIBBS: I — I don’t know if Bill got that question yesterday. I’ll have to look through it.

TAPPER: You didn’t watch Bill when he did his…

GIBBS: I did watch most of it. I couldn’t — I notice, when you watch it on TV, you can’t always hear the questions.

I wasn’t there, but I watched, but I did not hear.

😆 bring on the capuchin monkey with the sign cards.

Harold Ford Superstar

FEBRUARY 5–Like Jay-Z and Lady Gaga, Harold Ford, Jr. has a tour rider. The former Tennessee congressman, who is now trying to carpetbag his way to a Senate seat in New York, banks about $20,000 when he gives speeches booked by the Greater Talent Network agency. According to the below contract for an appearance Wednesday at a Missouri college, Ford demands that when his limo driver picks him up, the chauffeur must be carrying a sign reading “H.F..” Presumably, if the Democrat’s name was spelled out, hordes of fans/groupies would be alerted to his impending arrival and swarm him (something that has bedeviled the Jonas Brothers).

“Greater Talent” than what, exactly?

BooHooHooMan - 5 February 2010

LOL . Ford demands that when his limo driver picks him up, the chauffeur must be carrying a sign reading “H.F..” Presumably, if the Democrat’s name was spelled out, hordes of fans/groupies would be alerted to his impending arrival and swarm him

Oh, bullllshit. He’s prolly tired of people constantly saying,

14. catnip - 5 February 2010

Why are liberals so condescending?

Every political community includes some members who insist that their side has all the answers and that their adversaries are idiots. But American liberals, to a degree far surpassing conservatives, appear committed to the proposition that their views are correct, self-evident, and based on fact and reason, while conservative positions are not just wrong but illegitimate, ideological and unworthy of serious consideration.

That’s because conservatives are idiots.

Liberals, otoh, are “f-ing retarded”.

ts - 5 February 2010

This issue is kind of a hobby horse for this guy, a fellow at the AEI. From 2006 at the NRO:
Why do liberals hate Bush so much?

A: When the GOP is in charge, you’re just jealous of our success
A: When the Dems are in charge, you rub our noses in it too much!

I have a feeling he has a Microsoft Word template and he just fills it in like a MadLib when he gets a column.
