Hey, All!

Just waving hello. Still looking for work, though I have a hot phone-banking prospect for some Cadillac non-profit this week, maybe. Think of me next time your dinner is interrupted by a phone call from some schmoe begging for money so the CEO can have a bigger limo. :p

Oh, and we have a new cat. Kind of an Aby-tabby mix, I guess. It’s been boring for Butterscotch the Evil since Callie passed on last Fall. Now she has somebody to be disgusted with besides the stupid humans.

Carry on. =^..^=

catnip - 8 March 2010

ms_x!

I thought of you when MitM posted the story about McDonald’s co-opting meringues in France.

(You will always be MeringueWoman to me.) 😉

marisacat - 8 March 2010

Hi dear! My fingers are crossed for you… (recommending one of your “remedies”, Lilet and Paris macaroons!)

And kiss the kitties!

ms_xeno - 8 March 2010

[grin]

Thanks, but right now the budget calls for remaindered rice crackers and maybe one beer– but not until after Noon. I have my standards. :p

Glad to see everyone here still keeping the faith. The most exciting blog moment I had recently was The Distant Ocean Michael Moore thread that morphed into everyone quoting Looney Tunes at each other. You might say it was a spontaneous evolution or something… 😀

Oh, and I’m having an art “fire sale” on LJ because the closet is too full to hold any new stuff. 😮

2. ms_xeno - 8 March 2010

Buh-but… I don’t even *look* French! Tsk. I did watch a few snippets of the Olympic hockey games, though. Does that count?

I’m sorry to have been lurking so much but not really posting. Typing around the new lap cat right now.

mr_xeno is calling him “Sid the Kid” after some other damn hockey celeb I’ve never heard of.

marisacat - 8 March 2010

mr_xeno is calling him “Sid the Kid” after some other damn hockey celeb I’ve never heard of.

LOL Gift him (new cat) with a hockey puck.

ms_xeno - 8 March 2010

He’s already swatting around one of those “wooly mice,” and staring under the closed door at Butterscotch.

They have not been formally introduced yet.

marisacat - 8 March 2010

Always fun to introduce a new adult cat to the other adult cats. 😈

I am assuming New Guy is an adult?

ms_xeno - 8 March 2010

He’s nine months old, so almost full-grown.

I explained at the shelter, “Our cat will hate him, but that’s okay. She hates everyone.”

:p

marisacat - 8 March 2010

aww so dear… when you get a pic of him on line, send me a download… 😉

catnip - 8 March 2010

That would be Sidney Crosby. He scored the winning goal for Canada in the gold medal game. 😉

Make sure the new kitty has a helmet!

Listening to Rush, he’s playing clips from a long (described in some reports as a monologue) radio interview from Massa…

Lotta juicy stuff on Rahm… a lot more than had made print reports. YUM.

Implode on guys.

catnip - 8 March 2010

Massa’s alleging that the WH is forcing him out because they’ll do anything to get the health insurance reform bill passed. He’s going on Glen Beck’s show tomorrow. (via MSNBC)

Popcorn!

marisacat - 8 March 2010

Did you hear the part yet on the hsower curtains in the House mens locker room? What a scream! ya want gay innuendo, Massa will serve some up in response.

I assume he manages this for a few days then drops. But fun while it lasts.

marisacat - 8 March 2010

Via Ben Smith… 2006 Rahm and Massa sitting in a tree… plotting

[I} don’t want you on TV tonight to be angry,” Emanuel whispers to Massa at one point. “Take it down a notch.” “I never had an admiral walk on my ship that wasn’t inspecting me. … He wants to fine tune me and refine me, and my problem is I am who I am, and I’m not very refinable,” Massa says later. “He thinks I’m too fiery.”

“If all people see is anger, they’ll see anger. Do you ever remember a person not likeable winning?” Rahm says, slapping Massa on the chest. “Be likable.”

marisacat - 8 March 2010

NYT rushed their big Sunday Mag Rahm article to press, online…. (scheduled for print edition this weekend)…

[I]f Emanuel’s philosophy is to put points on the board, to take what you can get and then cut a deal, to make everything negotiable except success, then the White House is testing the limits of Rahmism. For 14 months, the president has struggled with the balance between that pragmatism and the idealism of his campaign. At times, he disregarded Emanuel’s advice to scale back his goals, particularly on health care. At others, he has sacrificed campaign positions in hopes of achieving a compromise. “There’s a constant tension between the need to get things done within the system as it is and the commitment to change the system,” Axelrod told me last month. “Finding that line at any given moment is really, really difficult.” …

I suggest knee capping them all to the floor boards in the West Wing. Ob and his progeny and wif in the private quarters. Let the next administration find the skeletal remains.

Anything to be rid of them. I’d rather live under the owner-ogres than the white glove, dying on the vine front men.

Sully is out today saying the ONLY good thing about DC is Ob. Cold compress for the queen. AND: Cue the assassination hysteria (fresh article on that over at the Guardian, a keeper of La Flame).

marisacat - 8 March 2010

And keep laughing! Who typed?, with Rahm dictating on the phone to the newsroom?

In choosing his chief of staff, Obama concluded that what he needed was someone who was not like him in temperament or political instinct. With only two years in the Senate before effectively leaving town [only to return, sadly – Mcat] to run for the presidency, Obama needed a guide through the labyrinth of Washington.

“He really wants Rahm in that position because he trusts him,” Ray LaHood, the transportation secretary and a close friend of Emanuel’s, told me. “If Rahm tells him to make a phone call or to do something, he knows that it’s probably a good thing to do.”

Pretzel Rahm.

Madman in the Marketplace - 8 March 2010

and to prove himself lacking in judgement, he chose Rahm.

marisacat - 8 March 2010

might as well laugh, right? round and round we go…………………

4. marisacat - 8 March 2010

hmmm Rather than an urban area with a pop. of 80k, sounds like “Marja” is a loose collective of farmers and ag in the southern part of Helmand province.

C-punch

[T]he idea was passed on to the news media by the U.S. Marines in southern Helmand. The earliest references in news stories to Marja as a city with a large population have a common origin in a briefing given Feb. 2 by officials at Camp Leatherneck, the U.S. Marine base there.

The Associated Press published an article the same day quoting “Marine commanders” as saying that they expected 400 to 1,000 insurgents to be “holed up” in the “southern Afghan town of 80,000 people.” That language evoked an image of house to house urban street fighting.

The same story said Marja was “the biggest town under Taliban control” and called it the “linchpin of the militants’ logistical and opium-smuggling network”. It gave the figure of 125,000 for the population living in “the town and surrounding villages”. ABC news followed with a story the next day referring to the “city of Marja” and claiming that the city and the surrounding area “are more heavily populated, urban and dense than other places the Marines have so far been able to clear and hold.”

The rest of the news media fell into line with that image of the bustling, urbanised Marja in subsequent stories, often using “town” and “city” interchangeably. Time magazine wrote about the “town of 80,000” Feb. 9, and the Washington Post did the same Feb. 11.

As “Operation Moshtarak” began, U.S. military spokesmen were portraying Marja as an urbanised population centre. On Feb. 14, on the second day of the offensive, Marine spokesman Lt. Josh Diddams said the Marines were “in the majority of the city at this point.”

He also used language that conjured images of urban fighting, referring to the insurgents holding some “neighbourhoods”. ….

5. marisacat - 8 March 2010

NYT has a piece up on Massa… I had forgotten he was a recruitment from the R side of the horrific bed.

GOOD LUCK… 😆 I bet he wishes had never changed parties!

A Republican who switched to the Democratic Party because of his opposition to the Iraq war, Mr. Massa lost in his first try to win the House seat in 2006. He was successful two years later, defeating the Republican incumbent, John R. Kuhl Jr.

He was a proponent of a single-payer health care system and was among 39 House Democrats to vote against health care legislation, saying it did not do enough to rein in costs. …

NYCO - 8 March 2010

Amo Houghton getting old and retiring was possibly a bigger disaster for that district (and the Dems) than anyone ever suspected. Sometimes the devil (Republican) you know is better than the devil you don’t…

Ah well, another Markos Moulitsas special, there.

marisacat - 8 March 2010

HA! At this point it is an issue can the Dems pull off a Special Election.

I gather Giannoulias is struggling in Chicago….

Good Luck to them all!

NYCO - 9 March 2010

No way in hell the Dems will pull off a special election in that district.

However, NY-29 is not NY-23 (the locale of the other crazy special election for McHugh’s seat). NY-29 contains both WNY’s poorest, rural, red areas and some of the most affluent/”progressive” (parts of Rochester). NY-23 voters were a lot less excitable and more homogenous, and I daresay more “reality based” than either the right or the left in NY-29. They just rolled their eyes and kicked the national GOP out and went back to basic training and milking the cows.

Glad I live in boring NY-25, which is more similar in political temperament to NY-23.

marisacat - 9 March 2010

Of course I am enjoying this no end.

As we are on fire from coast to coast and most places in between.

marisacat - 9 March 2010

I have no idea how the elections will go… and don’t especially care, but for the entertainment of: Oops another one drops… Oops another one fell by the wayside. ooops scandal over THERE… and HERE. And THERE… and so on… 😉

Cuomo’s numbers drop

Amazingly, Andrew Cuomo’s approval rating has dropped 13 percent, thanks to his role in investigating Paterson, according to the [Marist] poll.

Cuomo’s approval rating was 67 percent in a March 2 poll. It’s now 54 percent.

Why health care reform is not a “huge progressive victory”

But surely if we want to determine whether or not this is a historic progressive victory, we need to ask what exactly the health care reform effort has done to stem this ideological regression, since it clearly lies at the root of an unending string of progressive defeats. And the answer comes straight from the lips of Barack Obama, who has repeatedly told the country that this is a great bill because (1) it’s not an unrealistic and impractical foreign-inspired government-run program; (2) it doesn’t turn your health care over to government bureaucrats; and (3) it relies entirely on the principles of business competition and consumer choice (usually abbreviated to “choice and competition”).

snip

And the result: The Democrats shot their historical wad on health care by re-introducing Bob Dole’s bill from 1994 and justifying it as a free-market solution. How is that a “huge progressive victory”?

marisacat - 8 March 2010

the last is so perfect. I am lighting candles (pumpkin colored ones as it happens, they were not right for my neighbor’s T’Giving dining table and he passed them to me) it FAILS.

For one thing, they plan to siphon money from Medicare. Aside from, it will bankrupt people, much as they are being bankrupted now.

Star of Oscar Winning ‘The Cove’ Recaps His On-Stage Political Action and the Academy’s Censorship

He said, “If another documentary had won, we would have gotten bumped. It’s a major breakthrough in the campaign. It guarantees a theatrical release in Japan. The distributor was struggling. But a movie that has won the Academy Awards will get into theaters.”

O’Barry said he was extremely nervous as he and the filmmakers walked on stage, but he knew that he had to unfurl his banner message: “I had butterflies in my stomach. I wanted to throw up on my shoes. But I knew that one billion people were watching, and I had to do it.”

O’Barry is no stranger to the movie making business, having spent years as a stuntman and animal trainer on the Flipper series and number of other television shows and films. Still, he said that being at the Oscars made him feel a bit like an odd fish. “I felt different than everyone else in the room,” he said, recalling his emotions in the moments before the award was announced. “I’m not in the industry. I am out of time and out of place. I don’t belong there at all. I am thinking what this will mean to the campaign if The Cove is mentioned.”

O’Barry said that it was great that James Cameron shook his hand as he walked down the aisle, and that backstage George Clooney told Psihoyos that it was lame he didn’t get a chance to talk. Oh, and that “the guy” who gave them the Oscar trophies was very encouraging and complimentary and said he had seen The Cove twice. O’Barry might not have recognized him, but “the guy” was, well, Matt Damon.

marisacat - 8 March 2010

I just heard on the news outhere that they censored his hand held sign with the texting address (I guess that is what it was… “The Cove” and some numbers…) but at least from the clip here, 44,000 people have contacted him, he said.

FULL DISCLOSURE: My name is Jesse LaGreca and I am now a paid employee of PeanutButterPAC.

PeanutButterPAC is a new Progressive political action committee that was founded by 5 liberal bloggers (Kossacks AnotherMassachussetsLiberal, SomethingTheDogSaid, Spedwybabs, PistolSO and myself). We are talking real grassroots here, none of that Corporate astroturfed malarkey.

Our first goal is to organize a money bomb for Jennifer Brunner, a very progressive candidate in the Ohio Senate race.

1. Toss about a half dozen fresh, downwardly mobile 30~something
bourgeoisie.
2. Marinate. In anything. (any bullshit will do) .
3. Leave standing. { Feel free to improvise from here,
until reaching the CRUCIAL next steps…}

4. Etc.
5. BASTE the bourgeoisie with a vaguely leftisher sauce. In a Box. Online. { Revolutionary Rhetoric Brand’s Peppercorn Ranch is recommended. }
6. For a few hundred bucks, not venison, MONEY,

{ Now we’re cookin’ !}
7. Smoke box of basted borgeoise on fire till the inevitable waft of “Money Bomb” flavor for Democratic candiates arises.
8. Watch whole thing ignite, engulfing kitchen,
the drapes in the dining / living rooms, what have you.
9. Flee with loved ones as smoke and flames become unbearable. 10. Alert neighbors.

At this point, consider taking local survivors to a nearby drive-thru,
having any cute but fleet footed little ones shadowing the rear bumper while adults place wholly unintended-to-be-paid-for order at the million megawatt screen and microphone.

Be sure to have the vehicle MORE than arm’s length from pick up window, thus, When ANYTHING purportedly edible in a bag is placed on the counter inside, the signal can be given to the kids to rush by with the snatch and grab .

Oh The Drahhhhma surrounding whether he is going to “get stuffed” and “lose” “Health Care” / “Insurance” “Reform”. Hardly. The Donk rank-and-filers are so fucking stupid . Not on Your Life.
He and the Dems are going to “win” this fatal finale, it’s their job on so many levels: one, to serve corporate interests, and two, literally to prevent losing jobs deep into the Democratic bench on the Hill at the risk of wholly discreditting themselves and revealing the collusion game for what it is.

No, The R will either help him, maybe this guy Brown from Mass, someone insulated or they can package as a ‘centrist”. And it has to happen before mid terms get in full swing, as the R can’t sell it after recouping what – let’s be honest now – are THEIR seats.

Baucus: We Must Reform Health Care Now
By Sen. Max Baucus
Special to Roll Call
March 8, 2010, 12 a.m.

Ten years ago, Dan DeJong, a fourth-generation rancher from just outside Libby, Mont., was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Dan worked hard all his life, but when faced with massive bills to treat his cancer, Dan and his wife, Pat, had no choice but to sell the family’s land and apply for Medicaid and food stamps.

When Dan passed away, Pat had to move just to find affordable housing. She still had no health insurance, but this time there was no ranch to sell if she developed health problems of her own.

The DeJongs’ story is all too common…….

marisacat - 9 March 2010

hmm I caught Marcia Angell of Harvard and a former editor (first woman) of the NEJoM on Moyers over the weekend… third time i have cuaght her in interview on these bills…

She said the plan is, as under te current most likely bill, the insurance cos can charge the elderly up to three times for coverage, that the sick poor elderly will just not obtain insurance and the ins cos will enjoy the mandated purchase of coverage from the 20s and 30s group.

I have not gone to Moyers yet to look up the transcript.

BooHooHooMan - 9 March 2010

That’s exactly how it’s playing out.
And the saps supporting Obama are the dumbest of dumbfucks: they keep blithering on about the magical subsidies and the uninsured who will “get covered”. Covered with what?!

Rendell in PA forced the State Retirees into Aetna.
The fuckers just. deny. authorizations.
It’s what . they. do.

Just string people and caregivers out.
All sorts of shit going on with Aetna, others obviously, too….
But It’s not going to surprise me one bit when people start shooting their executives.

The real end game IMO is the kind of Standard Oil sized mega monopoly medicine that even most Oligarchs can barely conceive. Locked in if need be with a SCOTUS decision striking down governmental initiatives otherwise.

Coming – I imagine eventually –
to a conversation within earshot of us all…

“So. Who is the M.D. , eh ~ I mean,
Goldman Sachs Life Account Executive YOU don’t get to see ?”

“I dunno, THANK GOD, but Little Jimmy and Sarah were well behaved today…the National Guardsmen providing security at the Pediatrician’s office really seems to keep them in line..
Did you hear about the Geriatric uprising?
It seems that Surplus Human Capital Determinations are being issued to 40 year olds now in Region B…”

Hey, it’s closer to the damn truth than Obama’s Magicare.

marisacat - 9 March 2010

Yes well.. she is in MA, so she also psoke on that.. which of course it is verboten to do. Cali btw legislatively banned ins cos from dropping people for pre existing conditions. Was doen years ago… MADE NO DIFFERENCE…

AND decades ago we put in severe limits for pain and suffering on tort, malpractice. And fruther the caps have never been revisited, even tho they are very otu of date. MADE NO DIFFERENCE to the ins cos.

The way is plotted out.. and it is a fucking nightmre. Jesus even Howard in one of his few lucid moments, actually publiclly said a family will be paying 20K for ins under the REFORM. Almost no one can afford that, nto long term.

She held out hope no bill will pass… and said it is the ONLY way, as whatever passes will be, quickly over a small number of years, completely undone. And then it will enver be revisted.

I think the jig up, up forever for any kind of reform, at all. Ever. But she seemed more hopeful.

Last, I think one of the keys to what is happening, with a bill, Ob and the raiders get the keys to the Medicare banked monies. I think that is part of hwat this is all about. Raiders. She alluded to that, but somewhat cryptically.

ts - 9 March 2010

Interesting. An update on an insurance issue I had previously – we were billed $450 for a non-participating provider on a trip to the emergency room. This practice is illegal in California. It is called balance billing. However, since I have a Federal Insurance plan, it’s okay to do this because the CA insurance regulator doesn’t have jurisdiction!

I met three people who have been hit by this same thing – all federal employees. If they can’t even protect their own employees how they gonna protect anyone else?

However, i have yet (crosses fingers) to receive the bill from the doctor. Probably because I screamed “I’ll SUE!” to the provider, Blue Cross and the hospital.

marisacat - 9 March 2010

I met three people who have been hit by this same thing – all federal employees. If they can’t even protect their own employees how they gonna protect anyone else?

yeah what does it say?

Obviously they accommodated someone, or they could ave written things that Federal rules on the ins coverage supercede state. SImple as that .. (or so I assume, knowing nuthing!)

Goldman Sachs Life Account Executive YOU don’t get to see ?”

This is no joke… that’s where we’re headed, towards giant “Risk management” oligopolies. All forms of risk: financial, health, natural disaster, fire, automobile etc, etc… The “successful business model” will be to “efficiently allocate payouts” i.e. deny coverage.

we ain’t seen nuthin’ yet on ever more abstruse “derivatives” which “financialize” all aspects of life.

marisacat - 9 March 2010

Big SNicker. I just heard that Massa says it was not sexual, les gropings.

Just caught up to The Note/Rick Klein from this morning. Whatever brings trouble, I am FOR:

[S]elf-contradicting, borderline paranoid ramblings need not necessarily be taken seriously, even when uttered by someone who, until now, held a seat in Congress — or who was part of Rahm Emanuel’s crop of “Fightin’ Dems” back in 2006. (They got the fighting part right.)

But the difficulty for Democrats is that Massa’s conspiracy theories take on just a whiff of believability after deals so famous that they instantly earned nicknames.

And in Emanuel, Massa is naming a scapegoat who was vulnerable even fully clothed, in a town that’s in a scapegoating mood at the moment. This is a (shower?) curtain the White House didn’t need lifted this week.

catnip - 9 March 2010

Dems Yawn Over Appointment of Right Winger Who Wants to Destroy Legal Aid – To Legal Services Corp. Board

Because the government includes several agencies and boards whose members are required by law to be bipartisan, however, the party-out-of-power’s Senate leader traditionally gets to make a few nominations of his own. One such McConnell nominee is Sharon Browne, a nominee to the Legal Services Corporation’s board who fundamentally disagrees with the Corporation’s mission of providing legal services to the poor. Browne has spent most of her career with a right-wing litigation shop that repeatedly fought to cut off funding for indigent legal services; and she was a plaintiff in a court case which claimed that a method of funding legal services for poor Californians violated that state’s law. In other words, McConnell has selected someone to help lead the Legal Services Corporation who is committed to destroying the Legal Services Corporation.

Yet despite Browne’s obvious unfitness for this job, and despite the fact that her patron has fought tooth and nail to prevent President Obama’s nominees from even receiving a Senate vote, Senate HELP Committee Chair Tom Harkin (D-IA) scheduled a committee vote on Browne’s nomination this Wednesday. Not one Democratic senator has taken a serious step to slow down Browne — such as placing a hold on the nomination — and she appears to be on track for confirmation.

Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain.

Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker.

The ID card plan is one of several steps advocates of an immigration overhaul are taking to address concerns that have defeated similar bills in the past.

The uphill effort to pass a bill is being led by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who plan to meet with President Barack Obama as soon as this week to update him on their work. An administration official said the White House had no position on the biometric card.

“It’s the nub of solving the immigration dilemma politically speaking,” Mr. Schumer said in an interview. The card, he said, would directly answer concerns that after legislation is signed, another wave of illegal immigrants would arrive. “If you say they can’t get a job when they come here, you’ll stop it.”

US apologises over Gaddafi comments

The US State Department has apologised for comments made about Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s call for jihad, or holy war, against Switzerland.

Department spokesman PJ Crowley, who made the dismissive comments, said they did not reflect US policy and were not intended to offend.

Col Gaddafi had criticised a Swiss vote against the building of minarets and urged Muslims to boycott the country.

Mr Crowley described it as “lots of words, not necessarily a lot of sense.”

Libya and Switzerland are embroiled in a long-running diplomatic row.

Clarification

“I regret that my comments have become an obstacle to further progress in our bilateral relationship,” Mr Crowley said.

Last week, Libya’s National Oil Corporation warned US oil firms of possible “repercussions” over Mr Crowley’s reaction.

The Libyan ambassador to the US sought to clarify Col Gaddafi’s remarks saying the Libyan leader meant an economic boycott not “an armed attack”.
