In the last thread, Madman linked to a John Caruso post at Tiny Revolution… http://www.tinyrevolution.com/mt/

😆 I just made it there to read:

ADDING: In order to spare the jellyfish from Ohio further embarrassment I omitted his claim that “I kept my pledge and voted against the bill”—meaning the original bill, that is.

What a kidder! For reference, Kucinich’s pledge said that in order to win his support, “any legislation that moves forward through both chambers, and into a final proposal for the President’s signature, MUST contain a public option” (my bold, their caps). But “any” there was just one tiny little word in a big long letter, so you can see how he might not feel that it invalidates his claim.

hmmm They so deserve their pensions! And their health care! And everything else!

2. marisacat - 19 March 2010

Ah yes… and just how is that vote for working for ya?

Via Angry Arab:

[I]t’s all part of General David Petraeus’s doctrine of a smarter, management-style counterinsurgency. There are now six five-to-nine-person human terrain teams in Afghanistan and 21 teams in Iraq. If the concept proves successful, the $120 million–plus program would grow to 700 HTT and support staff in those countries and other hot spots. The man charged with managing the program is retired special operations colonel Steve Fondacaro. He is so passionate about it that when I interviewed him back in the States, he held forth for nine hours straight. Seven hours in, he walked into a door, breaking his jaw, but resumed talking. Fondacaro freely admits that one of the biggest obstacles to injecting social science into the military will be the military itself. “We are like a virus infecting the host,” he told me. “Either the army will be inoculated and be stronger, or they will expel us in a torrent of puke.””

As’ad links to this.. and while I can hardly stand to read anythning about the wars, by now… it is worth it…

The horror of the anthropologists and psychologists deep in the war theatre has been reported, thsi is a good update…

The portal to America’s war on terror is gate three at the Bagram military base in Afghanistan, a six-and-a-half-square-mile blast-wall fortress surrounded by a wasteland of dust. From inside, up a long alley of concrete barriers and out of the haze, comes the visual equivalent of space aliens: flak-jacketed, helmeted, sunglassed, digital-camo-wearing National Guardsmen from Mississippi, who motion for me to get into their air-conditioned white SUV. We soon pull up to a plywood shack, where I hope to get my first look at America’s latest instrument of warfare: anthropologists.

A lady press officer is professionally happy to see us. “We didn’t even know what a ‘human terrain team’ was until you called,” she chirps as another soldier carefully cleans the Afghani dust out of her nose with rolled-up Kleenex. Then she adds, kindergarten-teacher style, “You are helping us to learn about these people.” ….

marisacat - 19 March 2010

Also at Angry Arab… what was that bout hearts and minds……. again?

Covert troops made mistakes

“Covert troops who killed two pregnant women and a teenage girl in eastern Afghanistan went on to inflict “cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment” on the survivors of a botched night raid, a report by the UN said.

The family of the victims in Paktiya province have accused Nato of trying to cover up the atrocity after an investigation by The Times revealed that two men, who were also killed, were not the intended targets of the raid. One was a police commander and his brother was a district-attorney.”

Maybe they are selling mouth gargle.

brinn - 19 March 2010

Dental work?? Those two have apparently had PLENTY! On our dime of course…..

ms_xeno - 20 March 2010

I have a pay-as-you-go deal with my dentist, since I’m not insured for dental. If I have actual work I go in and get the dental care done. Sadly, this still got me through last year ahead of the game, compared to what paying for the coverage would have cost. I would have had to pay for coverage every month but I was only in pain enough to need a dental visit once in all of 2009.

In an emergency, I could theoretically apply for that nasty 23% credit card that’s meant only for medical and dental expenses. I forget its name, but I’m pretty sure at some point it will become a jail-worthy offense to run up bills on those things with no real ability to pay. I mean, we’ll be halfway there once the stupid-ass “reform” bill passes, so… :/

Sure. And I “promise” to give Harry a lap dance.

Kind of reminds me of the counting of the holy hand grenade.

10. brinn - 19 March 2010

Hi all — a tent is going up in the backyard! Yay Friday! 😉

Got a houseful of kids and am done with most of my work for the week! Yiiiiippppie!

brinn - 19 March 2010

Oh, and it IS historic ’cause I’ve got them cleaning up the backyard! LOL!

marisacat - 19 March 2010

Weekend!

catnip - 19 March 2010

Yiiipppie wouldn’t exactly be my reaction to a houseful of kids. 🙂

But you guys have fun!

brinn - 19 March 2010

Understandable, catnip — and believe me, if it weren’t for the trampoline and the tent, which are in the back yard, my reaction might be much more muted! 🙂

I’m just hoping the rain stays away until tomorrow! heh.

catnip - 19 March 2010

Trampolines are definitely kid magnets. Lots of those in these parts and some kids across the way were out on theirs a couple of weeks ago here – which speaks to the fact that global warming really does exist. 🙂

brinn - 20 March 2010

Yeah, the kids thought I bought that trampoline as a birthday present for THEM — heh, it was for me, because boys, well, they do literally bounce off walls! 😉

More proof that global warming exists is the fact that the low tonight here, in Austin, will be 30 degrees — good thing they slept out there LAST night! (Although I was awoken by a mad dash into the house at 6:30 am because of wind rain and thunderstorms…it was kinda cute actually!)

marisacat - 19 March 2010

oh I was totally not into sports, but I did like trampolines. And tents in teh garden. Even in a part of my bedrooom…

catnip - 19 March 2010

You had a trampoline in your bedroom?

k3wl

marisacat - 19 March 2010

nooo… no… but at some point I did have a small tent in my room…as a sort of play place…

One thing at a time

If Obama gets a health care bill — and even if he doesn’t — this Spring will mark a major transformation in his approach to governing, as I mentioned yesterday. He’s no longer flooding the zone. He’s no longer staying above the fray. He’s no longer relying on public opinion, or his own power to move it. In short, he’s no longer playing it cool.

A reader notes how dramatic, in the context of those reversals, is his decision to cancel his trip to Asia. At the crucial moment in 2008, it was Obama’s decision not to suspend his campaign when McCain did that cemented the perception that he was ready for the presidency.

At the time, this was his rationale:

“It is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once.”

That’s nice. Now what is the UN going to do about it? Pass yet another resolution that the Israeli gov’t will ignore? What a tired game it all is.

catnip - 20 March 2010

I like Gideon Levy, but if he thinks Obama’s going to come charging in on his white horse to save Israel from itself, he:

a) knows nothing about the Spelunker-in-Chief’s addiction to caving

and

b) had better not be holding his breath.

17. catnip - 20 March 2010

Jonathan Alter – not that I have much use for him, but:

Emanuel’s continual F-bombing is also well documented, if not exactly surprising. During the campaign, according to the book, Rahm told Bill Clinton to “stop acting like the fucking hack-in-chief.” Even Bo, the Obamas’ dog, was a recipient of Rahm’s rage. “A few weeks after the first family got a dog, Rahm Emanuel ripped into Bo, whose household accidents were consuming valuable presidential time in cleanups.” Alter reports Rahm saying, “I’m going to kill that fucking dog.” In one meeting with a junior male staffer, Rahm apparently yelled: “Take your fucking tampon out and tell me what you have to say.”

Let’s see if Rahm rebuts that. I doubt it.

marisacat - 20 March 2010

“A few weeks after the first family got a dog, Rahm Emanuel ripped into Bo, whose household accidents were consuming valuable presidential time in cleanups.”

taht’s ridiculous… there si household staff and in fact there is a MAN on staff, still at the WH who has cared for the presidential dogs (and whatever else) thru several administrations. However he has been forbidden to speak to the press by this FF.

They all need to get over themselves.

18. Madman in the Marketplace - 20 March 2010

After so much coddling of that asshole, I have a hard time believing this:

Dem Leaders Prepare To Move Forward Without Stupak

There’s still a question as to whether Stupak controls the amount of votes he claims to and discussions with Stupak and the members of the Stupak bloc are ongoing. What Stupak wants — a resolution that adds the same restrictive abortion language Stupak attached last time — isn’t happening.

That may explain why Stupak abruptly canceled his presser.

and

Update: Pelosi just said there will be “no separate vote” on abortion language.

marisacat - 20 March 2010

speaking of the fucking authoritarians… Pope Says “Sorry” and not much more. I hope no one is too too shocked. More than a few defenders in the thread at Times Online.

They’ve go the full text from the old pederast himself… 😆

Here is the full text of the pastoral letter from Pope Benedict XVI about sexual abuse at the hands of clergy in Ireland:

1. Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Church in Ireland, it is with great concern that I write to you as Pastor of the universal Church. Like yourselves, I have been deeply disturbed by the information which has come to light regarding the abuse of children and vulnerable young people by members of the Church in Ireland, particularly by priests and religious. I can only share in the dismay and the sense of betrayal that so many of you have experienced on learning of these sinful and criminal acts and the way Church authorities in Ireland dealt with them

….

👿 … 😈 and of course: 😳

hmmm he is dismayed and disturbed. The makings of high comedy.

marisacat - 20 March 2010

whoops…now the Swiss confess they have a problem with Catholic abuse… at a monastery.

marisacat - 20 March 2010

Whoops.

NOT long after a portly, jovial priest in the German industrial city of Essen was accused of sexually abusing three boys in 1979, he was offered a new home in Munich by Joseph Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI.

Ratzinger, who was Archbishop of Munich and Freising at the time, wanted Father Peter Hullermann — known to friends in the church as “Hulli” — to undergo psychotherapy.

A psychiatrist quickly concluded that Hullermann was untreatable, however.

“I told the church officials that Hullermann must never be allowed to work with children again,” said Werner Huth, the psychiatrist, in an interview with The Sunday Times this weekend. ….

And a bit farther down, shades of a scene frm Kubrick:

Cardinal Sean Brady, the head of the church in Ireland — who, as this newspaper revealed last week, attended a secret tribunal in 1975 at which two children abused by a priest were made to take a vow of silence — remains in his job.

And again from Kung:

In an article published by several European newspapers last week, Kung charged that Benedict knew about the sexual abuse of members of the Domspatzen (cathedral sparrows) choir in Regensburg. The choirmaster from 1964 to 1994 was Benedict’s brother, Georg, and the future Pope had also taught theology there.

Former choirboys at Regensburg have testified about ordeals stretching into the early 1990s.

“Joseph Ratzinger was perfectly well aware of the situation of the Domspatzen,” Kung wrote. “And it is not a case of slaps, which unfortunately were the order of the day at the time, but of sex crimes.”

Kung demanded that Benedict issue a mea culpa for his part in “covering up decades of clerical sex abuse”.

Bishops including the Pope should not just seek forgiveness, but “should finally acknowledge their own coresponsibility” in covering up “systematic abuses”, said Kung.

Sturm und Drang… til the next expose……………………..

CSTAR - 20 March 2010

Maybe Hans Kung might have the last laugh,

CSTAR - 20 March 2010

Although if he were really sensible, he would take all his books and appropriately modify them with “NOT” (e.g. Why I am still a christian .. NOT)

marisacat - 20 March 2010

yeah all of these people just keep on hanging in there………

I read about Keung years ago in National Catholic dot org. He is for a modern church (whatever that might be). Ain’t gonna happen.

I s u p p o s e the argument can be made that the church would be soemthing else if it modernised it views on sexuality, birth control, infallibility of the pope’s words – and everything else..

But gee, waht would ti be then?

Madman in the Marketplace - 20 March 2010

Don’t forget the Aussies:

In a 13-page letter to Irish victims, the Pontiff has criticised the way bishops handled the church’s sexual abuse scandal, saying some of them made serious mistakes.

Pope Benedict has admitted the bishops had “a misplaced concern for the reputation of the Church and the avoidance of scandal”.

But Care Leavers Australia Network president Leonie Sheedy says the same things happened in Australia.

“I’d like the Pope to acknowledge what happened to us in the Catholic institutions in Australia,” she said.

“We suffered emotional, physical, psychological and sexual abuse.”

marisacat - 20 March 2010

Apparently cases are now popping up in Florence and Rome. Accordng to the article I linked above. Quelle Shocque.

Oha nd I love how lunatic liberals (it does seem to be coming from the L end of the looney dial) are running around like chickens saying that celibacy is the cause of the problem.

Yikes. No …. it’s not the cause of pedophilia and child abuse (of various types) in the church.

Then the only problem would be masses of the faithfull of the female sort being seduced…….. LOL. Sorry!!

McCain and Lieberman’s “Enemy Belligerent” Act Could Set U.S. on Path to Military Dictatorship

The bill is only 12 pages long, but that is plenty of room to grant the president the power to order the arrest, interrogation, and imprisonment of anyone — including a U.S. citizen — indefinitely, on the sole suspicion that he or she is affiliated with terrorism, and on the president’s sole authority as commander in chief.

snip

Now, however, as president, Obama has helped pave the way for such radical legislative efforts as the one introduced by McCain and Lieberman, by embracing — and re-branding — the military commissions he once opposed.

“Belligerents” are the new “Combatants”

Three years after Obama eloquently opposed the Military Commissions Act, the now-president signed a Military Commissions Act of his own, as part of the 2010 Defense Authorization Bill. The law, which sought to overhaul the discredited Bush-era military commissions for “alien enemy combatants,” introduced what is apparently turning out to be an important new term to the counterterror lexicon: Unprivileged Enemy Belligerent, defined as “an individual who: 1) has engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners; or 2) has purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners.”

Months before, in March of 2009, the Obama administration announced that it was phasing out the term “alien enemy combatant,” even as it held on to the authority to hold terror suspects indefinitely. “Unprivileged Enemy Belligerent,” then, was its replacement.

As Human Rights Watch attorney Joanne Mariner wrote last fall, “this is a cosmetic change, not a real improvement, which mirrors the administration’s decision to drop the enemy combatant formula in habeas litigation at Guantanamo Bay.”

marisacat - 20 March 2010

“this is a cosmetic change…”

Well…[snicker snicker] isn’t that what this administration is all about?

😈

Barack Obama, I Want a Divorce

But now I want a divorce from the Democrats, the “party of the people” versus the Republicans who with a few honorable exceptions are the party of cruelty. Are there some good Democrats? You bet. Are they outnumbered by callow, fearful Democrats? You bet.

I don’t care that at the moment there’s nowhere to go and hardly anybody to cheer for.

Like the Tea Partiers I’ve had it up to here. But as a taker of GI Bill, social security and Medicare benefits, and as a child of the New Deal which put my unemployed mother and father to work, I know that only big government, as dangerous as it can be, can help pull us all out of the shit – yes, the same government that by deregulating and bailouts pushed us into it. (I wonder how many populists, screaming about “socialist” government, are only too happy to take their portion of federal money as I am.)

I wish I could get behind Ralph Nader or the Green party or Cynthia McKinney or even Ron Paul for his antiwar stance. But having just split from my heart’s desire – the Democrats – I’m in no mood to marry up again. I’m caught in a vise between a lingering wish to be “effective”, not “waste my vote”, and a Huckleberry Finn itch to light out for unknown territory.

Kind of amazing:

First they came for the highway rest stops, then …

Arizona governor Jan Brewer signed legislation today ending the CHIP program in Arizona, effectively tossing 47,000 low-income children off the insurance rolls and out of doctors’ offices.

Not content to stop there, the state is also rolling back their Medicaid coverage to toss an additional 310,000 adults off the rolls, claiming the state budget is simply too stressed to handle the load, which is strange, considering the federal matching funds they sacrifice along with the state’s children.

Meanwhile in Mississippi

The school board’s response states that parents have organized a private prom at a furniture mart in nearby Tupleo. Now that the school district has withdrawn from the event, any constitutional claims are irrelevant, Griffith wrote. [American Civil Liberties Union attorney Christine] Sun said she had only heard rumors of the private dance until she read it in the brief.

“Constance has not been invited, so it is clear to me that what is happening is that the school has encouraged a private prom that is not open to all the students,” she said. “That’s what Constance is fighting for—a prom where everyone can go.”

On one discussion on an Internet bulletin board about the planned prom in Tupelo, a poster who identified himself as a junior at the high school said the prom would be “invitation only.”

“Constance and her gay-activist friends will not be attending,” he said. “They can go have their own prom because we certainly do not want any of them there.”

The poster expressed frustration at the attention the issue had brought to the city of about 4,000.

catnip - 20 March 2010

I saw Constance on Ellen’s show on Friday. Ellen was going to offer to foot the bill for a private prom but Constance wants a school prom – in her school- because that’s what she’s fighting for. Ellen via some company sponsor gave her a $30,000 cheque for her college tuition.

This isn’t some loud, activist type of kid. She’s very shy. Her dad was there to support her.

When she asked her principal if she could wear a tux instead of a dress to the prom, that answer was “no” because (slippery slope ahead) what if some guy wanted to wear a dress? WTF is wrong with some people? Seriously.

I splurged and got a really good bottle of Red earlier today. It was easier writing my latest healthcare-for-nobody rant knowing what a great reward was waiting for me when I was done. 😀

Ampersand is making an ass of himself defending Obamacare over on Alas. Though I’m amused that his opponent is from Blue Oregon. Last time I checked, they still had a three workrooms full of nothing but Nader effigies and torches, so I wouldn’t have expected it. Maybe since DeFazio of Oregon is demurring for a few token moments about endorsement, some of the poor dears are a just the teensiest bit conflicted.

Sid is also a bread-eater. (So was Walter, back in the day.) And this morning he pounced on a spatula that had onion-flavored cream cheese on it– apparently having missed the bulletin that cats are allergic to plants in the Allium family (? genus?), including onions.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

oh I did not know that about onions… I had to stop buying Rosemary Chicken from a market in my neighborhood… from the rotisserie section. No rosemary for baby, she disliked it enought o refuse the chicken.. and I always fed her some fo the roast chicken… Obviously not nooz that cats like chicken.

ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

Actually, I should’ve said that Allium is poisonous to cats. mr_xeno has a great snapshot somewhere of the late great Walter knawing on an onion that he found on the counter. Thankfully, it still had its skin on.

Fresh rosemary when I clip it in the yard always reminds me a little of citrus skin: that “oily” sharp aroma. Not surprising if most cats would reject it.

Awesome! (0+ / 0-)

I’ve been a Democrat since I registered to vote. I grew up in a very Catholic family and I always thought the Gospels were pretty cool. Jesus was always asking his disciples to take the hard route to a better life through sacrifice and giving.

The Democratic party is the only party that comes close to that philosophy in this country.

Let Obama be Obama.

TeacherKen… on the take.

This is it…today, we FINALLY reform health care (12+ / 0-)

I’m so excited, I can hardly sit still. This giant step for mankind (and the first of many in this public policy area) has been decades in the making.

Let’s drive it home!

Brrreaking: MSNBC reporting that Stupak is a yes vote (maybe, kind of).

catnip - 21 March 2010

CNN is saying he’s still a no.

Popcorn.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

I read Obster is doing an EO to make Stupak happy. I read that in one of my briefly awake periods during this morning, will see if I can find it.

So now we lock in abortion language even tighter, from the pen of Spelunker in Chief.

catnip - 21 March 2010

If he had a clue, he’d know that an EO isn’t even necessary since you guys have the Hyde amendment. And I understand that an EO can just be rescinded anyway so what’s the point? Last minute theatrics, afaic.

catnip - 21 March 2010

Now Stupak is planning yet another presser today – this one at 4 ET. He canceled one earlier.

Or should I say: he aborted one earlier.

ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

The theatrics Dems go through to choke this stuff down is hilarious. There was a poster on LJ a few weeks ago, supposedly pro-choice, shrieking about how we were all whiny bitches who should shut up about ABORTION because HER FRIEND needs help FIGHTING CANCER NOW!!!111

Yeah, Lady. Let me know how much of a crowbar your friend will be able to stick in his/her wallet come 2013. If they live that long. Maybe they can get good chemo in jail, if those short-sighted, self-absorbed, uteri-possessing bitches don’t suck up all the cells first. Huzzah.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

lotta people are going to be very shocked as they continue to be denied coverage. For years. And then, come the big dates of 2013, 2014 and for somethings 2018!, imo it will never change.

Nothing in this changes the system.

ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

Amp is reduced to asking the Blue Oregon dissenter what have YOU ever done for universal healthcare anyway?? [whiiiiiiiiiiine]

Christ. Nothing sadder than watching good people transformed into shambling zombies because their brains can’t comprehend that a shit plan peddled by a “nice guy” is still a shit plan.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

yes all the thuggism they keep at hand, has come out over Health Care.

IMO it’s been ugly — and for a hideous sell out bill. That will change nothing and in fact, cancel out whatever little hope there ever was for universal coverage and reform of the system.

Wasn’t ever going to happen anyway……….

marisacat - 21 March 2010

Yes the Hyde amendment would have to be overturned and it never will be. Ever.

Oh my guess is they are planning more restricted language for an EO. And no R will ever overturn it.

Ob, flew as a liberal to idiots and he is a black born-again church folk.

Lucky us.

fwiw: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0310/34767.html

The White House and anti-abortion Democrats have reached an agreement to diffuse the controversy over abortion in the health reform bill – planning a series of steps that will secure the support of Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) and other Democrats to give party leaders the votes they need to pass reform, sources tell POLITICO

Under the agreement, President Barack Obama would sign an executive order ensuring that no federal funding will go to pay for abortion under the health reform plans. In addition, Stupak will get to state his concerns about abortion funding in the bill during a colloquy on the House floor during the debate.

And then, Stupak and several other Democratic hold-outs over abortion will sign on to the bill, the sources said. The agreement would almost certainly give House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the 216 votes she needs to secure an historic health reform vote by day’s end – capping a year-long drive to achieve Obama’s signature legislative goal. ….

Stupak will get to state his concerns about abortion funding in the bill during a colloquy on the House floor during the debate.

Drama queen.

He thinks he’s some sort of Shakespearean character now?

catnip - 21 March 2010

CNN just read from the WH press release that there will be an EO with “additional restrictions”. Hmmm…

marisacat - 21 March 2010

they were always going to use it to slip something by… imo anyway.

catnip - 21 March 2010
catnip - 21 March 2010

So, all of this happened because the senate fucked up the bill in its rush to make it a xmas present?

Community health centers don’t perform abortions. They never have—not even in the 1960s and 1970s before the Hyde Amendment was introduced. And they don’t plan to in the future. In a statement issued last week, the clinics’ umbrella organization, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), said that “health centers do not plan to, nor are they seeking to, become providers of abortion.” And Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius has pledged that none of the money from the health care bill will be used to fund abortions at community health centers.
