A polar bear cub clings to the side of its mum like velcro as she takes a stroll across a snow-covered tundra
[LINDA DRAKE / SOLENT]

I noticed the last thread is all screwed up, comments placement wise… Time to move on!!

So, I will carry my last comment forward… 😉

[N]oam Chomsky says that the teabaggers are proof of the left’s weakness and failure. If so, it’s been a long time coming. Ever since liberals embraced the corporate statism of Bill Clinton, working and poor people left behind and trampled are less and less a liberal concern, to the degree they ever truly were. Professional liberals possess very little class consciousness, save for those in the upper tiers who understand and accept how the game is played. The rest of us are pretty much on our own.

At least the teabaggers are in the streets, battling for their perceived interests. Liberals are more obedient at the moment, applauding or overlooking policies they would jeer and protest if a Repub president oversaw the scene. Liberals decry possible teabagger violence, but do nothing about the killing machine operated by Obama. Despite some mild dissent, most liberals are still very much in love with Their President and want him to succeed (one of The Nation’s main worries).

What “success” means to them is subjective, since objectively, Obama faithfully serves those with real power, while keeping his followers in check. Not that he has to do much to keep them quiescent. If that’s not success, I don’t know what is.

Soros warns Europe of disintegration

By Gillian Tett and Chris Giles in Cambridge

Published: April 11 2010 15:23 | Last updated: April 11 2010 16:55

The eurozone area and wider European Union is now “on the brink” of disintegration unless Germany steps up and provides loans at below-market rates to Greece, George Soros, the hedge fund manager, has warned.

However, Mr Soros added that he still hoped that Germany and others would be willing to forge a last-minute solution, since the consequence of a break-up would be so dangerous. He was speaking before an announcement on Sunday afternoon by eurozone finance ministers of the terms of a support package for Greece.

“It is 50-50 whether the eurozone breaks up. The damage that break up would cause is so great, that I think that as people realise it, they will pull back from the brink,” Soros told the Financial Times in an interview. “But we are at the brink now…a solution has to be found in a matter of days.”

Mr Soros’s comments on the fringes of a conference in Cambridge came as Dominique Strauss Kahn, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund spoke of the fiscal challenges facing all advanced economies and the need for a European Budgetary Authority to underpin the euro.

Not too fond of most Georges I’ve met. (Don’t worry, that conclusion is backed by all sorts of fancy quantitative analysis. LOL.)
Fundamentally, Soros is another currency speculator.
Oh but his philanthropy….like keeping the Vichy Dems on life support …

marisacat - 11 April 2010

well a right wing administration in Greece plunged them into a mess. A left wing admin gets elected (however weak ti may be) and suddenly ti is time to pay the piper.

Madman in the Marketplace - 11 April 2010

a pattern repeated over and over again, including here.

marisacat - 11 April 2010

Not that we will be electing any left wing anything. Not now and not later.

Not with Liberals (well they say that are) of many colors calling SCHWARZENEGGER “liberal”.

I have heard that shit from white, women, Hispanic, women and god help them, blacks. Who are probably at the center of the prayer circles for Obster.

Etc.

diane - 11 April 2010

My mind burped tothis frightening piccy, fromthis article, titled:

Money Chooses Sides
In a barn-burning, record-smashing fund-raising campaign season, Barack Obama tapped a new breed of Manhattan donors and won the expectations game. But because of the new primary schedule, excess is barely enough.

diane - 11 April 2010

yup

…. The conference room belonged to George Soros, the billionaire bête noire of the right. After talking to Soros for an hour about his prospective bid for the White House, Obama walked down the hall and found assembled a dozen of the city’s heaviest-hitting Democratic fund-raisers: investment banker Hassan Nemazee, Wall Street power Blair Effron, private-equity hotshot Mark Gallogly, hedge-fund manager Orin Kramer. Most had been big-time John Kerry backers in 2004. Most had a connection to the Clintons. All were officially uncommitted for 2008…..

diane - 11 April 2010

but, hmmm:

bête noire of the right

I highly doubt it. The only right/leftism, appears to be among the duped citizenry.

As they say, patriotism (and “religion”), are the refuge of scoundrels.

marisacat - 11 April 2010

well the right uses his name, to rile their own. You know, like “Palin”…. and a few others.

The most entertaining thing tho, was to watch Soros wake up that the Dems and Kerry really did not want to win in 2004. I think he thought they did. Plan to win…

Big shock. Tho I can’t think WHY he would be shocked.

diane - 11 April 2010

Would love to see a pic of Palin and Georgie dining, he may even admire her.

well, yeah, nothing would much shock…..they are all ghastly fucks.

BooHooHooMan - 11 April 2010

Ha! Oh Thanks for that Diane.
Loved the mention of Nemazee – We -Hardly – Knew -Ye.
RR’s / Schumer/ the Big Dawgs ….the Rubin crowds errand boy who was able to walk out of Citi on a same day loan for $77 million no questions asked. On totally fraudelent docs having lost his money on the wrong side of HiFi dealings. Itself a joke, he was their burn man, the dupe… to take the hit. The Dumbass. I saw he now has to report to prison in a week or so, the Federal Judge wants him in to start serving his 15 to 20ish now rather than this summer…….
seems he was determined a flight risk. LOL. No shit, Judge Sherlock.

The minimalism of the loft was perfect for Ob.

diane - 11 April 2010

Anytime! Thought you might like that one hon.

The minimalism of the loft was perfect for Ob.

Oh and how about that clear rising in air effect (partly occurring from his feet being oddly halfway in midair on those steps?), I wonder was that photoshopped, or just a natural?

CSTAR - 11 April 2010

Is Obama encased in glass in that picture?

marisacat - 11 April 2010

I have seen other photos taken at that same “meeting”… it apparently is real. Not photoshopped at all.. tho I would expect some fiddling iwth lighting or contrast.

It was here in SF in August of 2008 that Nancy informed us that Ob was “sent to us by God”. She was at a three tier fundraiser on Nob Hill… from a low price up to a special smallish dinner for wealthy Indians (sub continent of course, we can scarcely stand ‘indigenous to the US’ people, geesh) at 30K + per couple. It was to that chosen group she let the manna from heaven “stuff” drop.

We are so unlucky.

diane - 11 April 2010

indeed on that lighting, and must say, the puppet had a rather good balance on those steps at the time.

And then, who was the audience he was facing toward, since the big dawg(s/essas) appeared to be at his side(s) and back.

diane - 11 April 2010

us/US, I guess?

2. marisacat - 11 April 2010

Mickelson won the Masters… I decided to drop in at the end, as Tiger got shakier and shakier over the past few days.

They’ve tried to downplay it, but his game is off (who cares?).

What a shock.

Just before the winning shot, there was a commercial, Mickelson has a Foundation (what else is new?)… some blither about nominate your teacher. WIth Exxon Mobil logo all over the ad and the Foundation name.

A Winner, one born every minute.

marisacat - 11 April 2010

oh yes. Tiger came in 4th.

Hey! he did good!

Yesterday he was tied for 5th.

3. BooHooHooMan - 11 April 2010

With Goldman Sachs there for the underwriting. The other GS. Maybe they wrote a derivatives on embroidered dress shirts together.
Funnny thing is, the alarm bells are sounding over “the Greek Debt Crisis” (true,)… but in an of itself its peanuts compared to the CDS derivatives written on it.

Who knows the hyper inflated volume of contracts or how many times underlying value this shit is for? Pretty clear, despite Georges chatter after counting on that RW management in Greece (if not betting on it directly, that some of the “wrong people” are going to lose without hustling some pliant Pol to herd the sheeple, this time it’s Merkl and Germany.

No matter. The moneymen are already speculating on the outcome.

marisacat - 11 April 2010

I think iirc that Ob was number 2 for congressional GS cashola (and remember he had less time to get to be any number).

And over all, by now, he is their number one. He spoke at their annual conflab, in 2007 and 2008. ”Featured speaker” I guess they are called.

I can think of a few other, ruder names for the job.

Knee pads and popcorn!

marisacat - 11 April 2010

well the people are going to lose in Greece – “austerity” programs being what they are.. and not being totally stupid, they know it.

And i think in Europe, “Greece”, tho not alone in this, is used as code for ”greasy”, ”swarthy”, ”Eastern”, ”Southerner”.

And so on.

BooHooHooMan - 11 April 2010

They do know it.
Of course now I suppose we can expect Ob, Knob and every other banker’s baggage handler to be selling Law n Order in Greece. While working to crush the admirable resistance there that we saw last year.

Short answer? Unlikely. Or they will for all the wrong reasons.

The case for arresting the Pope

According to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the total number of priests with allegations of abuse in the college’s survey is 4,392 for the period 1950-2002 (and not counting allegations that were withdrawn). Approximately one-third of all allegations were reported in 2002-2003, which falls within the window after the creation of the ICC.

The John Jay survey covers only US priests, and yet this single study proves the abuse was not isolated or sporadic. Additionally, the criminal enterprise has international reach extending to Ireland, Australia, Canada, Belgium, France, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, etc. So if the only prerequisites for arresting the Pope are that the allegations need to have been filed after 2002, and be systemic in nature, then Check and Mate.

The world need not remain silent in the presence of such evil simply because the Pope shields himself behind a veil of religiosity. In the past, sane members of our societies have drawn the line, and arrested religious charlatans for criminal behavior.

marisacat - 11 April 2010

Things must be tightening.. I see the head of the Italian Bishops has come out and said go after (arrest) the bishops who hid or moved or covered for abusers.

So…………… everyone? Sounds like it to me!!

[snicker]

I’d LVOE for the US Council of Catholic Bishops to be arrested. All of them.

Oh I think its time for the Communion Wafers way past the expiration date.

Ron Paul;

The question has been raised about whether or not our president is a socialist. [H]e’s not a socialist. He’s a corporatist. And unfortunately we have corporatists inside the Republican party and that means you take care of corporations and corporations take over and run the country. We see it in the financial institutions, we see it in the military-industrial complex. And now we see it in the medical-industrial complex.

From the comments in that thread:

8. BooHooHooMan - 11 April 2010

LOL. I found this from Soros in Feb.
The few comments ( tho I disagree with the one conclusion about the wisdom of the US blowing of Cali.) see Soros “talking his book”. They see him as short in Euros. No gush whatsoever for Soros. or his position. Sounds to me like he’s heavy on Athens Bonds and currency contracts on bad notes from the Adriatic to the Agean Sea.

Anyways,
here’s George, apparently the New Provincialist in February. The Greece Disaster Proves That The Euro Was A Bad Idea

And this is Soros on Charlie Rose in 1995. So progressively Worried about migration from the Balkans, (- a most unfortunate refugee crisis for capitalists when the serfs quit a country along with the intelligentsia, no? )
AND Uncomfortable with the term “Partition”……”No Fig Leaf “, said George hesitently on , um, the Partition of Bosnia, which saw the Muslims of the Yugoslavia landlocked into a sure-to-fail ghetto state.
A seller of Bosnia. Oh what the hell, at least there was that juicy Croatian real estate bubble on the coast with everybody from the Americans to the Germans Russians Irish and Brits trying to get in.

And this is Strauss-Kahn on CR in 1998 when he was French Minister of Economics selling the Euro. Talk Talk Talking then about the need for more transparency and control in the currency markets and it’s impact when Japan was treated to the Big Letdown.

Strauss-Kahn now runs….the IMF. Around we go.

BUT the soft slop for how well parts of the former Yugoslavia have “come back” from the war.

Where the war was waged on the ground, it was hideous. Vile from the air as well.

I am pretty certain the Catholic areas got TONS of cash shoveled in. Less, a lot less, for the muslim areas.

air kiss (or deep throat, what do I know!) for Pius XII — AGAIN.

and what to make of the following, from page 357, Chapter 20 – Absolute Power, of Hitler’s Pope (John Cornwell, Viking/Penguin Group 1999…Hardcopy, fuck kindle). It strikes me as unsettling:

Golda Meir, Israel’s foreign minister, wrote: “When fearful martyrdom came to our people in the decade of Nazi terror, the voice of the Pope was raised for the victims. The life of of our times was enriched by a voice speaking out on the great moral truths above the tumult of daily conflict. We mourn a great servant of peace.” [1]

‘High quality journalism will triumph. … We have a business model problem, we don’t have a news problem.’

Well… he’s fucking nutz.

marisacat - 12 April 2010

More nutz.

All things considered, not a smart move. And somehow I missed it over the weekend, I am snagging it from ‘Chris in Paris’ at Americablog (he links back to the Guardian).

[A] furious transatlantic row has erupted over quotes that were attributed to a retired Italian bishop, which suggested that Jews were behind the current criticism of the Catholic church’s record on tackling clerical sex abuse.

A website quoted Giacomo Babini, the emeritus bishop of Grosseto, as saying he believed a “Zionist attack” was behind the criticism, considering how “powerful and refined” the criticism is.

The comments, which have been denied by the bishop, follow a series of statements from Catholic churchmen alleging the existence of plots to weaken the church and Pope Benedict XVI.

Allegedly speaking to the Catholic website Pontifex, Babini, 81, was quoted as saying: “They do not want the church, they are its natural enemies. Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God killers.” …

I have to say it is very amusing to hear them all dissolve to mass hysteria and paranoia. Just jelly from top to bottm.

snicker. shicker a LOT… 😈

BooHooHooMan - 12 April 2010

My Gahd.
Bishop Giacomo Babini? Of Grosseto?
Anybody wanna go there with the pun on the names?
LMAO. Who are they gonna trot out next?
Cardinal Dickinus Alterboyce?

Welp. Maybe if they hadn’t gambled on Ernst Rohm coming out on top and all, they might be in better shape. LOL.

marisacat - 12 April 2010

At Americablog, Chris in Paris also has a pic of a Benny poster, a big one a bilboard, in Malta… that is defaced. Benny got a Hitler moustache.. and a couple of what he (CinP) called “pedo bears” … I guess some graffitti that is being done to do with pedohpilia.

It is a couple of posts below the one I linked to.

12. BooHooHooMan - 12 April 2010

Benny is in Jerusalem.
And calling for a Palestinian State.
So there’s that, in a John Wayne Gacy sorta celebrity endorsement kinda way for the idea.. Amidst lingering property disputes between Israel and the Vatican dancing around the Real Estate deals in East Jerusalem. As the evictions there and deportations in the West Bank continue. Among other issues of rivalry for money and power worldwide.
Oh they’ll come to craven terms, all right.

Pope Benedict XVI visits holiest sites of Judaism and Islam

Pontiff due to give mass in Garden of Gethsemane as his pilgrimage in the Holy Land continues

Pope Benedict XVI was visiting some of the most important religious sites in Jerusalem’s Old City today on the second day of his pilgrimage in the Holy Land.

He began at the Temple Mount or Haram al-Sharif, which houses the Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa mosque, one of the holiest sites in Islam. Then accompanied by Israel’s chief rabbis he saw the holiest site in Judaism, the Western Wall. He was to have meetings with the chief rabbis before visiting the Cenacle, the apparent site of the Last Supper.
:

The pope was publicly criticised yesterday, at the start of his visit, for not going far enough in his condemnation of the Holocaust in a remembrance service at Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial.

After landing in Tel Aviv, Benedict had delivered a speech calling for the creation of a Palestinian “homeland”, but also speaking out against antisemitism, saying its continuance across the world was “totally unacceptable” and should be combated.

“It is right and fitting that, during my stay in Israel, I will have the opportunity to honour the memory of the 6 million ¬≠Jewish victims of the Shoah,” he said, using the Hebrew word for the Holocaust, “and to pray that humanity will never again witness a crime of such magnitude.”

His comments seemed intended to repair damage done this year when he lifted the excommunication of four bishops, including the Briton Richard Williamson, who denied the existence of the Nazi gas chambers. The Holocaust is an issue that has long divided Israel and the Vatican, notably over the actions, or inactions, of the second world war pope, Pius XII.

After meeting Shimon Peres, Israel’s president, the pope visited Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. He did not see the museum, where a photo caption criticises Pius XII for not speaking out against the Holocaust. But he did attend a service at the hall of remembrance, rekindling the eternal flame. He laid a wreath of flowers in yellow and white, the papal colours, and prayed over a stone slab beneath which are buried the ashes of Holocaust victims.

He told the audience the Catholic church felt “deep compassion” for the victims remembered at Yad Vashem. “They lost their lives but will never lose their names,” he said. “May the names of these victims never perish. May their suffering never be denied, belittled or forgotten.” But he avoided any reference to the church’s wartime history.

Moments after the pope had left, Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, chairman of the Yad Vashem council, told Israeli TV he was disappointed by the speech. “There certainly was no apology expressed here,” he said.

Lau criticised the pope for not specifically saying 6 million were killed, though Benedict did use the figure in his earlier speech. The rabbi had made the same criticism of Benedict’s predecessor, John Paul II, who spoke at Yad Vashem in 2000.

I could care less if they destroy each other in the process.
Thing is, they won’t: They both need the pretense of credibility.
And the Fed.

Oh they’ll come to terms all right.

An interfaith meeting the pope attended on Monday night was interrupted by a Muslim cleric, Taysir Tamimi, who is also the Palestinian chief justice. He gave an angry, 10-minute speech in Arabic criticising Israel and the “oppression of the Israeli occupation”. Some in the crowd tried to walk out, others applauded.

Tamimi had not been due to speak at the meeting at the Notre Dame centre in Jerusalem. The pope sat through the speech and left shortly afterwards.

The papal spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, described the intervention as “a direct negation of what a dialogue should be”.

“We hope that such an incident will not damage the mission of the pope aiming at promoting peace and also inter-religious dialogue, as he has clearly affirmed in many occasions during this pilgrimage,” Lombardi said.

You know what that means don’t ya?
You know what time it is then?
Time to trot out…the Shroud of Turin!

Shroud of Turin on display for first time since 2002 restoration

What a show!
What’s next? Real footage of the Crucifixion?

Previously unknown, grainy imagery has surfaced from what is believed to be an early form of the present day videocam. Jesus Christ of Nazareth can be seen screaming “What the Fuck?!” in shock from the crucifix in the background, apparently finding strength enough at the end to mouth the words: “It was a Joke!”

Onlooker Mort Levin had taken the afternoon off and donkeyed in with the family. “Parking the donkeys was a real pain in the ass”, Levin said, believed to be the first recorded pun at a crucifixion as well.

Okay I’m out.

Baffled by Health Plan? Some Lawmakers Also Seem None Too Clear

In a new report, the Congressional Research Service says the law may have significant unintended consequences for the “personal health insurance coverage” of senators, representatives and their staff members.

For example, it says, the law may “remove members of Congress and Congressional staff” from their current coverage, in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, before any alternatives are available.
[…]
The law apparently bars members of Congress from the federal employees health program, on the assumption that lawmakers should join many of their constituents in getting coverage through new state-based markets known as insurance exchanges.

But the research service found that this provision was written in an imprecise, confusing way, so it is not clear when it takes effect.

The new exchanges do not have to be in operation until 2014. But because of a possible “drafting error,” the report says, Congress did not specify an effective date for the section excluding lawmakers from the existing program.

14. diane - 12 April 2010

Wow, I guess it’s become a world of being either Republican, Democrat or dogmeat for not going along with either program, particularly when Obama wants to ensure even more Executive Power (Kagan? Please) and keeps droning the hell out of innocent bystanders. And sorry, but Soros and Al Gore, not BUYING, let’s talk about the Toxic Tech industry Al’s made millions off of, let alone who Al stuck us with in 2000.

I received an odd and not too friendly seeming email today from someone I hadn’t heard from in ages, and felt forced to delete it for fear the odd link (no note included) was something unpleasant. Though I haven’t noticed them posting anywhere for quite awhile, the only connection I could make was that something I posted here, ticked them off, since I haven’t posted anywhere else for years, and I’ve never dissed them or had any bad feelings about them.

It hurt, but I’m not seeing any difference between the Obama or Bush regimes at the end of the day, and if criticizing Obama et al, warrants that, I don’t know what to say except that’s pretty sad from a representative of the “liberal party” if it wasn’t a joke that went over my head.

marisacat - 12 April 2010

Ob seems to their last slimey hope. Fake as it all is.

Beyond pathetic. And the party is full of goons.

Come now diane, don’t you want to help a born again Chicago fixer do all he can…??? Don’t you want to nail down all the advances of the Civil Rights era?

Can’t you see how GOOD he is?

What’s WRONG with you?

Etc.

Sad to say the party has been very effective. They’ve used every sleazy trump card.

diane - 12 April 2010

I registered Independent at voting age so as not to blindly define myself with either major party, in case they were ‘fixers,’ apparently, that’s made me suspect. It’s as if there’s something in the fricken water. And really sad that people no longer seem to define themselves beyond a political party, as if it’s the defining characteristic of a human being. Fuckin Nuts, and certainly a short memory of the Party behind the Bus Burnings.

I’d like to think the person isn’t a goon, because in one of the few emails, I sent, I actually offered to do them a favor which I would’ve been happy to do for them. I did send an email asking what the odd missive was about, again, hopefully, I just didn’t get it.

marisacat - 12 April 2010

Well lots of people are registered as “Independent”… or here in Cali, “decline to state”.

It doesn’t make any difference as the two parties control just about everything. As far as I can tell.

Not that it is anything new.

Vatican says bishops should report sex abuse to police
Mon Apr 12 2010

Vatican pays tribute to ‘dissolute’ Beatles

Mired in controversy over claims of institutional sexual abuse and cover-ups, the Vatican appears to be trying to deflect some of the criticism by publicly praising the music of the Beatles as “beautiful.”

“It’s true, they took drugs; swept up by their success, they lived dissolute and uninhibited lives,” L’Osservatore Romano, the official newspaper of the Vatican, said in a weekend tribute to the 40th anniversary of the band’s breakup.

“But listening to their songs, all of this seems distant and meaningless.

“Their beautiful melodies, which changed pop music forever and still give us emotions, live on like precious jewels.”

Drummer Ringo Starr said he couldn’t care less whether or not the Vatican praised the Beatles’ music.

He told CNN: “Didn’t the Vatican say we were satanic or possibly satanic, and they’ve still forgiven us? I think the Vatican, they’ve got more to talk about than the Beatles.”

marisacat - 12 April 2010
