Wildlife in the Garden second place: Magdalena Wasiczek – Mimikra [Magdalena Wasiczek]

The legend does not say, but I think the leaf on the right is a butterfly, or moth….  [mimikra = mimicry… maybe?]

I realise I am overly grabbed by this sort of thing, as a shut-in… but these photos really are lovely.  A contest of photographing the garden… the idea of garden.

Anyway, enjoy…. 😉

I think I’ll try to get out to this exhibit – Body Worlds & The Brain – while it’s in the city. I note our local loudmouth Catholic bishop is bitching about it.

Bishop Frederick Henry, who leads the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, questions the display’s morality in an article posted on the diocese’s website.

Henry acknowledges the benefit of donating one’s body for medical research but points out that the plasticized bodies are displayed in poses of recreation, such as throwing a baseball, and of “ghoulishness,” with one’s innards exposed and skin draped over an arm.

“We have crossed the line from education into the realm of entertainment, questionable art and commercial showcases,” he wrote.

“The church’s concern for human dignity extends to the body even after the soul is no longer present. The bodies of the dead deserve respect and charity, preserving the God-given dignity of the human person.”

Concern for human dignity? You have GOT to be kidding me.

marisacat - 29 April 2010

talk about calcified brains…

The preciousness and ability to excuse themselves… coming from the men of the Holy Roman Church is just unbelievable…

catnip - 29 April 2010

That bishop also wrote a ‘leave the popeyness alone!’ editorial not long ago. He likes seeing his name in the press.

marisacat - 29 April 2010

There was protest against that show here as well, in SF… actually there are a couple of promoters who have put together that human body travelling show (I mean, more than one travelling show, different auspices).

HERE, the moan was from Chinatown… ti came otu that the promoter’s show that came here, had contracted, bought whatever the word is, bodies in China….

gah.

The promoter won the game for a while here, til the bodies began to leak. It actually was pretty funny… a reddish clearish ooze. They swore up and down it was not blood… and by now I forget the whole story, but it was a little too distasteful.

So the show closed…

Heather-Rose Ryan - 30 April 2010

I saw the show (or one of the shows – I forget the name) when it came to Minnesota several years ago. I have nothing against displaying cadavers or pieces thereof for educational purposes, but it was all very creepy. I had the feeling that the guy who created it was indulging his own sick fetish. But hey, it’s art.

marisacat - 30 April 2010

yeah agree it def was a promoter’s conjuring… I did see however that children might really get off on it… it had enough creepyness and weirdness to do the trick…

Ir reminded me of 19th and early 20th century specimen collections…

A Different Response

1:05 am April 30, 2010, by Jamie Dupree

Let’s just imagine that this oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico had happened five years ago. We would have had Democratic lawmakers screaming from the rafters in the Capitol. But in 2010, it’s not happening, because they are boxed in by their own President’s agenda.

When Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter were in office, Democrats weren’t out of step with the White House on energy policy when it came to offshore oil and gas drilling. But now, calling for a moratorium on new drilling isn’t what the White House wants.
….snip….

Bill Nelson is bleating, but it is an election year for him… and I read earlier today that they can smell the oil spill in Tampa.

marisacat - 29 April 2010

The UK Telegraph has been pretty speedy with its reporting… the foreign press (UK and AUS, in particular) is ahead fo the US domestic sludge.

Billy Nungesser, president of Plaquemines Parish, confirmed that a sheen of oil had reached the fragile coastal wetlands near the mouth of the Mississippi river.

In the town of Empire, Frank and Mitch Jurisich could smell the oil coming from just beyond the murky water where their family has harvested oysters for three generations.

“About 30 minutes ago we started smelling it,” Mitch Jurisich said. “That’s when you know it’s getting close and it hits you right here.”
…snip…

marisacat - 30 April 2010

So cute… I am sure He shed a tear… still had one left after the funeral.

Of course just yesterday, Janet Nap sent one message while the WH (LeBolt was used I htink) sent another. Janet N: everything on the table (so unoriginal!) and WH said, still going at it! watch us! (words t that effect)

White House Adviser Tells ABC News: No New Offshore Drilling Until Complete Review of Spill

snickersnax…

TOMORROW’S FRONT PAGE TODAY — AXE to George [that’s wee Stephie]:

‘No additional [offshore] drilling has been authorized, and none will until we find out what happened and whether there was something unique and preventable here. … No domestic drilling in new areas is going to go forward until there is an adequate review of what’s happened here and of what is being proposed elsewhere.’

Axe over working as clean up man for the s l o w 8 day non start.

GOOD LUCK!

DAVID AXELROD, with George Stephanopoulos at the Newseum for “Good Morning America,” on questions about the administration response to the oil spill:

“This is always the case in Washington, that whenever something happens, the political speculation sets in. But the truth of the matter is that we had the Coast Guard on the scene almost immediately after this accident, the deputy secretary of the Interior was on the ground the next day, and we’ve been coordinating closely with the local authorities and with the responsible party, BP, down there to deal with this from the very beginning. I’m not concerned about THAT. What I’m concerned about is that we do every single thing we can to remediate this problem, to stop the flow — and that’s what’s going on.”

The morning AFTER the oil makes landfall in SE LA… they all get so quick and busy and chatty. Yeah right.

marisacat - 30 April 2010

More from Mike Allen. Persoanlly I hope the Wh had to change their underwear for a dry sets…

USA Today p. 1

WEST WING WORRY:

A White House never wants to see the words ‘Valdez’ or ‘Katrina,’ let alone both in the same AP lead story:

‘The oil slick could become the nation’s worst environmental disaster in decades, threatening to eclipse even the Exxon Valdez … The leak from the ocean floor proved to be far bigger than initially reported, contributing to a growing sense among some in Louisiana that the government failed them again, just as it did during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. President Barack Obama dispatched Cabinet officials to deal with the crisis.’ So the White House is not only responding ferociously, it’s also communicating that aggressiveness: snippy

From April 3, 2010 – Shell gets ready to start Arctic drilling within weeks after Obama go-ahead

Directly contradicts all of the Obama apologists who said the he only opened up “exploration”.

And this:

The decision to open up new areas of the American coastline to oil and gas development is part of a calculated political move by the Obama Administration to win Republican support for proposed climate change legislation.

The decision has upset environmental groups, but was welcomed yesterday by other oil companies.

Lamar McKay, the chairman of BP America, said that he was “encouraged” by the decision. “It’s a constructive step. We believe the industry has a strong track record of performance in the Gulf of Mexico and are confident that development can be done elsewhere in the same safe and environmentally sensitive manner while creating needed jobs.”

Yeah – jobs for people to clean up the wildlife and the environment.

marisacat - 30 April 2010

the replacement is JON MEACHAM.

What a shame.

catnip - 30 April 2010

I’m not familiar with him.

marisacat - 30 April 2010

Meacham? I am pretty sure you will know him when you see him… ugh is all I can say. Religio lickspittle from Newsweek, shares the “On Religion” column with Sally Quinn at the Wapo online division… a fuckign simpering idiot.

He is ont eh record that is it is “just right” that Billy Graham should be perceived as God… who in Mecham’s words is “white and Southern”.

He is someone’s weak brained son that got palmed off on the decrepit US media. Becuase it is already a holding pen for nut cases and sell outs. They barely noticed.

catnip - 30 April 2010

Sounds like my Friday nite viewing schedule is in for a change then.

Madman in the Marketplace - 30 April 2010

well, if you like watching a circus geek bite the heads off chickens, then Meacham is your guy. If not, then …

marisacat - 30 April 2010

They are taking NOW too, with … their names elude me.

Weak lying Frontline…

I don’t know about other PBS local channels but ours has been brain dead for near to 40 years. And by now it only exists to inveigle a lot of rather limited do gooder dumb as rocks judeo xtian frumps to leave them money in their wills. They have an annuity scam worked out, people fall for it………..

The ads they run for that are a comedy. Basically.

Madman in the Marketplace - 30 April 2010

ours has an auction on all night tonight

marisacat - 30 April 2010

That sick hump Dwyer a quasi shrink is a big one here.

They also do a lot of music shows geared for the mindless boomer era people. Show 40 – 60% of some anthology, you donate 120 – 360 dollars and get the full dvd… etc.

I find it absolutely horrible. Sick pandering and WEIRD.

Just saw Salazar, Janet Nap and that blob, Jackson from EPA… in a line up down in Louisiana. (pity it was not a criminal line-up in a police station)

We are in good hands. They looked like unnattractive corpses, with about as much brain muscle as a dead flea.

8. diane - 30 April 2010

Well, there we have it, nutshelled:

Obama’s criticisms of the Warren and Burger courts

anyone still not get it?

marisacat - 30 April 2010

Thanks for that…

As I noted in an update, numerous people, in comments and via email, objected that I had misinterpreted Obama’s remarks, that he was merely noting the hypocrisy of the Right but not himself criticizing those courts. As it turns out, The New York Times’ Charlie Savage and Sheryl Gay Stolberg understood his remarks exactly as I did, as did the experts on both sides of the spectrum they interviewed, and the White House itself seemed to confirm that this is exactly what Obama intended to convey: […]

Stunning.

The only thing to hope for is collapse in office. Luckily Ive decided I’d rather live under the full bore ogres than their even worse manservant.

marisacat - 30 April 2010

… and this in one of his several updates… It is interesting as Lucy Dalgliesh is pretty much weak and runny jello… a strangely strong statement from her:

“The message they are sending to everyone is, ‘You leak to the media, we will get you,’ ” said Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. In the wake of the Bush administration’s aggressive stance toward the press, she said, “as far as I can tell there is absolutely no difference, and the Obama administration seems to be paying more attention to it. This is going to get nasty.”

marisacat - 30 April 2010

Poor little doesn’t-even-live-here Glenn. He assumes a lot:

UPDATE II: For all you libertarians appearing in the comment section to defend Obama’s comments because you don’t like Roe and Brown v. The Bd. of Education: I seriously doubt that those are the decisions he had in mind when criticizing “judicial activism.” Obama has long self-identified as pro-choice and a defender of Roe, and I would be quite astonished if he had Brown and its progeny in mind when criticizing the Court. Obama’s failure and subsequent refusal to specify the decisions he thinks are illegitimate make it impossible to know for certain, but it’s unlikely in the extreme that he intended to question the validity of reproductive right and desegregation rulings.

diane - 30 April 2010

saw, that and did the same ugh, you didn’t state that, moment, ….nonetheless, I have never posted under my full name, much less, start a website, like you have courageously done, Marisa ………. (and I perfectly understand why you don’t use your full name)

not sure what else to say there, other than

I love Glenn’s stand on Droning, using his real name

and Droning, to me, is the largest issue of the day.

marisacat - 30 April 2010

well I don’t use my real name… I think most people get outed as they want to meet or hook up with people… and I am nto interested in that… OR they have some small or large connection ot the Democratic party… volunteer or whatever… and I have not had any connection with the local party, ever, but to vote. No clubs no meet and greets, etc., none of that.

I did call the Pelosi office for help, when I applied for Soc Sec Disability and once before that…, but that was years ago and not connected to anything online.

diane - 30 April 2010

yeah, and well, don’t ya know, not so long ago, I contacted a US Cali House member’s office for assistance and was told I needed to fill out a form first, which amounted in my mind to a waiver for them to hideously use me for their Political Platform, come time for stumping, no care for the fact, I’d likely become unemployable for my outing, and basically let the intern I was dealing with know, Fuck All Ya’ll and the Dragon’s Ya’ll rode in on.

About that House member, I recently was amused, though not shocked, to find, first hand, that she is a favorite lawmaker, for those Republican CEOS and VPS who run the finance departments of the multinationals, to see to it to pay as little taxes, if any, as they can.

marisacat - 30 April 2010

well I had to sign a release for the aide in the Pelosi office to be able to access my Soc Sec file… he faxed it to me, I signed and faxed and mailed…

The earlier call was for information, in 93.

I think it would depend on what sort of help I was seeking. If they need to intervene in your life, I can understand a form, of some sort. But if it is merely to be directed to services, I don’t see a form needed for that…

diane - 30 April 2010

marisacat - 30 April 2010

I LOVE Glenn assuming Obby is not speaking of Roe nor of Brown. How would he know?

Glenn has greater enlightened self interest than many R riding the current waves, but still…………….

It all gets threadbare.

Madman in the Marketplace - 30 April 2010

he does always seem to grasp for some pathetic wispy little bit of fluff to refuse to fully face what a horror Barry Clinton is …

marisacat - 30 April 2010

Glenn? Welll he has to retain faint credibility for when he regretfully tells people to vote for the born again slacker go along fuck up from Chicago.

he’ll present the dregs as enough. They always do.

I have to say the limp game of trying to point to Palin about oil is one of the sickest weakest feints the Dem party operatives have ever tried. Ob and his white folks are up to their nostrils in thsi one.

9. marisacat - 30 April 2010

oh I feel sick.. they jsut grab these numbrs from their asses. It could be 25,000 barrels a day, they don’t even know.

When they said they could only measure (HA!) the surface oil and could nto measure down deep in the water… hell it was over.

And it may spew at full force for months.

I see they are madly hiring fishermen… as one said, they know my livelihood is gone, or they would not be “hiring” me.

I am fine with the gubmint and BP being scared shitless of white redneck Acadian and Cajun fishermen. Vietnamese fishermen, too.

Fine with me.

marisacat - 30 April 2010

Just saw this…. I noticed a few of the reporters on the ground, near the barrier islands and wetlands and fishing areas in SELA looked positively spooked tonight on the various evening news. No shit.

Leaked Memo Sees Bigger Oil Risk

By ANDREW C. REVKIN

Ben Raines, an award-winning environment reporter in Alabama, unearthed a two-day-old federal memo today proposing that the flow of oil from the wrecked exploratory well in the Gulf of Mexico could vastly increase. Quoting the memo, Raines wrote:

“The following is not public,” reads the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Emergency Response document dated April 28. “Two additional release points were found today in the tangled riser. If the riser pipe deteriorates further, the flow could become unchecked resulting in a release volume an order of magnitude higher than previously thought.”

For the moment, officials are describing the memo’s conclusion as a worst-case scenario, not a forecast …snip…

I think the words, the following is not public, blows the smarmy fiction [lie] that this is possible projection. The words would be different…

marisacat - 30 April 2010

This is the al.com blog that is linked to at the NYT, which downplayed the report A LOT.

BP Is Criticized Over Oil Spill, >but U.S. Missed Chances to Act

yeah .. but headlines… I see them too. We’ll see what sticks… if the link I put up to a long time environmental investigative reporter (up thread to an al.com piece, following a link to a NYT piece that did link back, but underplayed what it says) is at all right, the Gulf oil “leak” is going to blow beyond all fears.

If you want or need a laugh, scare up a vid of Ob at the Height funeral… NOT giving the eulogy but tearing up, seated in the front pew. He is overt, worked very hard to be seen…. it is awful. The laugh and the scream is Mama Michelle tossing him a very cold and extended look as he does it. She did not buy it, by my take.

BooHooHooMan - 1 May 2010

Jesus. Just finished reading that link.

… Well, now, at this well, its coming out at fairly high velocity,” Gouget continued. “Any erosive grains are abrading the inside of the pipe and all the steel that comes in contact with the liquid. It’s essentially sanding away the pipe.”

Gouget said the loss of a wellhead is totally unprecedented.

“How bad it could get from that, you will have a tremendous volume of oil that is going to be offgassing on the coast. Depending on how much wind is there, and how those gases build up, that’s a significant health concern,” he said.

The formation that was being drilled by Deepwater Horizon when it exploded and sank last week is reported to have tens of millions of barrels of oil. A barrel contains 42 gallons.

LA Times says the crude is much heavier (and hard to clean up) than BP wanted people to think. I did laugh (or cry) when Suttles of BP tried to say it was like hair filament.

I think they are not in the oil biz, they are in the piles of excremental explosion business.

I ESPECIALLY loved the CG Rear Admiral, not Landry another one also female, down in LA with the hideous creeps from DC, who called BP, “our partner” and had to stop and back up. Slowly… but! the damage was done.

marisacat - 1 May 2010

LAT

[T]he analysis is based on only a single sample, “but it has caused my level of apprehension to go way up,” said environmental scientist Edward B. Overton of Louisiana State University, who is analyzing the oil for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. So far, he appears to be the only researcher who thinks there may be a bigger-than-expected problem with the oil.

“This could be a fluke sample,” he conceded, and researchers are “desperately” trying to get more samples — a project that is not as simple as it might sound. “We’re hoping and praying that it is Louisiana sweet crude, but if it is not…this is going to be a very unique spill. We have never seen a spill with this high an asphaltenic content.”

Asphaltenes are the heaviest components of some crudes. They don’t burn, they are not attacked by bacteria in the environment, and they don’t evaporate. Their resistance to such degradation is what makes them useful in constructing roads that can survive weathering for long periods. But it also makes cleanup exceptionally difficult.

Asphaltenes are “a fairly sticky and gooey material that can be bad news for larger animals,” said earth scientist David Valentine of UC Santa Barbara. “Asphaltene oils seem to aggregate and don’t form slicks like light crude,” he said. The oil seepage off the coast of California is a good example of high-asphaltene-content oils, and its behavior — condensing into little balls when it rises to the surface of the ocean — is typical of such materials.

The gulf slick, “from what I have seen, seems consistent with it being a light crude oil,” he added. But he has not analyzed samples, and apparently no one besides Overton has either. Or at least, Overton said, no one seems to have examined the oil’s asphaltene content.

…snip…

The sample analyzed by Overton was collected by a skimmer that was sent out to collect oil from the ocean surface. “My only caveat is I don’t know the history of the skimmer. Was it empty when it went out,” or might it have already had some high-asphaltene material on board? “It’s not supposed to, but things like this happen in a spill,” Overton said.

“Everyone’s response is, ‘Let’s get some more samples,'” he said, “but the logistics are difficult. The spill is 50 miles out, which doesn’t sound like much, but in a motorcraft, that’s six to seven hours out and the same to get back. There’s no way to land a plane out there. It is way too rough.”

Overton hoped to have more samples analyzed by Sunday. Until then, all he could suggest was, “Stay tuned.”

Time to go put a chick breast, or two, in the oven. (I am totally off any reasonable schedule, gah)

marisacat - 1 May 2010

reading around, pretty clear the Feds at all levels all agencies are in a hot swweat over this…

Cathc this from Federal Eye… in the Wapo.

Reading the LAT more closely I understand why someone interviewed on Lehrer began to almost babble about “the deer” in the SE of LA and in the areas adjacent to fisheries and wetlands… . the heavy oil of asphaltenes, how hard it is to clean up, is hard on the “larger animals”.

GOOD LUCK!

marisacat - 1 May 2010

HA!

Maher: Oil companies are worse than banks. They’re also too big to fail. And their cost to society is also, just like the banks, too great for society to sustain it.

I started to talk about this with John over there. The International Center for Technology Assessment did a study of the hidden cost on a gallon of gasoline. And this was years ago, when gas was about a dollar a gallon. And because of things like defense of the Middle East, regulatory oversight, pollution cleanup, oil industry tax subsidies, it was about $15 a gallon. I don’t think people realize that. So ‘tax, baby, tax’ maybe is what we should do with the oil companies.
