Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition winner

Winner – urban and garden wildlife – Respect – Igor Shpilenok / Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009

[I]n the winter of 2007/08, Igor spent five months as a ranger in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve in Kamchatka in the Russian Far East, taking his cat Ryska with him for company. Immediately, she staked out her territory and set to work showing the local foxes who was boss. Each day, the foxes came looking for food, even peering through the window of Igor’s cabin. Ryska was having none of it. With her impressive weaponry of sharp claws and teeth, ‘she soon earned respect from them – and from me,’ says Igor, ‘living up to her name, which means little lynx in Russian.’

I hate watching kids eat their own turds.

Ambiguous Chris Bower’s up to the minute inconclusive conclusion on the Dem Specter v Sestak PA Primary:

There is talk about this being anti-incumbent year, rather than just a pro-Republican year.. Well, there is no possible better test of that thesis than this primary. Arlen Specter is the ultimate incumbent, but the people of Pennsylvania don’t much like him anymore. If the establishment, including Organizing for America, can pull this off for him anyway, then maybe this is just a pro-Republican, pro-conservative year, and not an anti-incumbent one.

Shorter Doof Bowers equivocation following a piece in which he actually used the word “thesis”: It’s just like, ~ sucky~ , ya know?

Sounds weak. Not a whole lot of confidence in their Act Blue Scamdidate, Sestak.
Welp. AA shepherds will staying home without incentive. As will every other non union Dem constituency group. And regarding the Union rounders, if there’s one “rule” they live by it’s this:
You don’t “wound the King”.
And that “King” right now is Specter in several respects.
– Dirt on every pol in the country , the knobby small potatoes in the Philly Dem machine of no matter, they have been in his (and Rendell’s) bag for years.

– One mobilized group in a low turnout election that will turn out reliably in his favor, the Jewish Dem vote. Statewide. A one point advantage Specter, minimum in swing vote in the total primary ballot.

And, most importantly in a thoroughly corrupt system, MONEY.

MONEH. Plenty of the luscious green, the street money to coax the street corner *riff raff* in.
[ If you’re gonna be jonesin’ for skag in Philly next week ,
Tuesday is your best bet to be dopesick.
Near a polling place for efficiency’s sake, thank you.
Enjoy your nod courtesy of your MIC Overlords. ]

I think the whole thing is a sandbag operation, Arlen to emerge from the “tough fight” (yak.). The other aspect of this is the slam dunk being given to a Pittsburgher / Allegheny County guy (Onorato) for the Gov nod in the Dem primary. The Philly machine gave the Westerner an absolute pass in the primary. Something only Rendell or Specter could do. So What’s that about? –> The regional partisans out Pittsburgh way have been brokered into Arlen’s camp. A plowed field in the Gov primary, Easter money from Ed and Arlens tithing Corp Law firms, promises of support and everlasting life for the GE. 😆 – -> They – Ed /Arlen /Philly – they’ll fuck Onorato later in a swap with the R’s : Arlen keeps his Sen seat the R get the Gov manse for their boy Corbett, the State AG. They’ve only been doing this shit for the last 50 years and the 50 before that. Something that none of the 400 respondent polls are going to pick up. BTW, it only seems like I’ve been writing this for 50 years. LOL.

So cue “historicest” “comeback” “evah”. Etc.

And The reality of the Murtha replacement? The Special Elec? The WH posse could care less if what’s his name the Dem aspirant loses. Its a DNC campaign operations center to milk as many rural Southwestern PA / Fall in Liners for Specter as they can.
The Big Dawg and every other slobbering fool will be out there touting , laughably, some congealing “Change’ “Experience” as ….Arlen.. With all the workable dexterity one manages to dressplooge together one big cover band clusterfuck of Bowie doing Hendrix doing “Changes” if Hendrix ‘Experience” was that of a glam rocker. LOL. Sounds like a plan! Should be awesome this Fall!.

But they really could care less about losing that House seat.
…because if Specter loses the Dem Primary?
After Obbie endorsed him? LOL. Oh Lordy.
I’d so love to be wrong about how I see this breaking.

marisacat - 13 May 2010

Last I heard they are not sending Obby in to corral the black vote.

My best outcome, everywhere? EVERYBODY goes down.

3. marisacat - 14 May 2010

hmm CNN

[R]ep. Edward Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, said he will send a letter to BP and ask for more details from federal agencies about the methods they are using to analyze the oil leak. Markey, who chairs a congressional subcommittee on energy and the environment, said miscalculating the spill’s volume may be hampering efforts to stop it.

“I am concerned that an underestimation of the oil spill’s flow may be impeding the ability to solve the leak and handle the management of the disaster,” he said in a statement Thursday.

BP officials have said 5,000 barrels per day of crude, or 210,000 gallons, have been leaking for the past three weeks.

But a researcher at Purdue University has predicted that about 70,000 barrels of oil per day are gushing into the Gulf after analyzing videos of the spill.

Associate professor Steve Wereley said he arrived at that number after spending two hours Thursday analyzing video of a spill using a technique called particle image velocimetry. He said there is a 20 percent margin of error, which means between 56,000 and 84,000 barrels could be leaking daily.

“You can’t say with precision, but you can see there’s definitely more coming out of that pipe than people thought. It’s definitely not 5,000 barrels a day,” Wereley said.

corrente has a post from someone living in Bangkok…

marisacat - 14 May 2010

A post of hers on the shooting of the rebel general. Interesting short thread.

She also links to a Bangkok blogger

catnip - 14 May 2010
marisacat - 14 May 2010

I read last night that three were shot, but it seemed unclear if any died… a little like the general, at first he was reported dead from the head wound.

Today all hell seems to be breaking loose there….

catnip - 14 May 2010

I haven’t been following it closely. I’ll have to read up on what’s happening.

marisacat - 14 May 2010

up thread I posted a link to corrente, a woman living in Bangkok has posted to his site (not a comment but at least two posts) AND I linked to a blogger in Bangkok that she offered up…

catnip - 14 May 2010

Cute pic. When I lived in the country before, a little family of red foxes lived in the yard – such cute little pups. I used to take mice that my cats had caught and leave them by the den opening for them. They never bothered the cats so it was all quite harmonious.

Joe Conason on Obama and the Kagan Nomination

“Obama’s Feminist Touch” — The Kagan nomination reminds us that Barack Obama is the first president raised on feminist principles.

It can only get worse. (not that this dumb fuck assessment of Obby being raised on “feminist principles” has not been around since the primaries and GE, sadly it has)

Heather-Rose Ryan - 14 May 2010

What was that quote where he scornfully said (regarding possibly disaffected women voters): “Where are they gonna go?”

Perhaps apocryphal but unfortunately I think it reflects his thinking on this matter.

6. marisacat - 14 May 2010

Just weeks before exploding in the Gulf of Mexico, the Deepwater Horizon’s drill struck a hidden pocket of natural gas, rocking the massive rig with what drillers call a “kick.”

Gas surged up the pipe, so strong operators ordered an emergency shutdown, fearing any spark might ignite the floating $560 million platform.

A close call, but not all that rare.

“Everybody took a deep breath and said, ‘Now, let’s get back to making a well because this rig is costing a million dollars a day,’ ” said Robert Bea, an engineering professor at the University of California at Berkeley.

The oil and gas industry spent years and tens of millions of dollars polishing the image of deep shelf exploration, making it sound as safe as boarding a flight to Orlando.

AND there is a link on the side bar to a McClatchy report that BP had the WRONG DIAGRAM to the BOP, the blow out preventer.

There is also an AP report rnning around that the last 7 hours of reports on the rig systems are “missing”.

They sure are tense. Every day, day in day out.

Image control

The White House has evidently shut down not just Kagan’s brother from, not talking, but allowing his class to be observed by the press; but also a cousin in Minneapolis, Gail Katz-James.

The model for this kind of broad outreach to friends and relatives, aimed maintaining central control over a person’s image, is modeled on the campaign itself, in which Obama’s own relatives and even more distant figures, like his college roommates, retreated and made themselves available only in very selective venues.

This isn’t all that hard to understand. In the current media environment, a single offhand comment from a distant relative could easily fly out of proportion, and the way in information gets chopped up into its smallest parts doesn’t really lend itself to nuanced biography.

But the sum of shutting down such an array of people who know a candidate or nominee is a strangely, artificially limited portrait.

I think the whisper campaign should be that she is some very odd freak. Forget simply gay (Nothing Wrong With That!! Right?).

BooHooHooMan - 14 May 2010

I just heard. Kagan is some really odd freak. Pass it on.

marisacat - 14 May 2010

Psst… passs it on…………. psst.

Well, that leaves FREAK.

See I was right.

BooHooHooMan - 14 May 2010

I went off to make a mug of tea… and when I got back, the following segment was some well, freak from Survivor.

Not much to say anymore. If it is not the proposed SC Justice, a Shrek American (as a commenter at Salon referred to her) up for grabs.. then it is some loon from a Survivor show.

Oh my. Another disquieting piece in The Imperial Record.

U.S. Said to Allow Drilling Without Needed Permits

So shocking… 🙄 …

Cue bleating from Demi-Libsheeple.

Yep. Wars of Choice. War of Aggression. Pre-emptive War. Intentionally killing civilians with remote controlled flying droid bombs for the sheer terror they inflict and the mind blowing certainty for any random survors left behind. The casualty saving crap and the benefit of hiding behind Techdesk hand wavey Know Nothingism… quite aside.

Assassinations at will. Torture. Sexual Torture of detainees.
Indefinite detention at that. Stay the Course from a Faker with a bogus Nobel Peace Prize in hand and a bipolar Oblitomat as Secretary of State on the other.

Yes, quite a shock the OilCo’s are operating without permits.

But 8 inch tar balls washing ashore?. I can’t tell – .
Are they the engorged spawn from the brilliant golfball idea?
Or another Level of Obama’s brand of Strategery? Ya know, a plan involving just a little more more time and a couple more inches on the spheroid globs, and they can provide carcinogenic hydrocarbon basketballs for everybody.
Oily Medicine ball sized booger-boulders even.
Yes things are just going swell. Love you back, man!

What a clusterfuck. Oily Balls Obama and The Martian Bomb Crew.

yes 25 days later, Chu is dispatched (so the story goes) with a crew of inventive problem solvers.

my guessis the third rate boychicks are getting busy as the whole fucking mess is about to blow bigger. A LOT of scientists sat right up when that small snippet of vid was released by BP… and immediately they were making mathematical equations that did nto look good for BP.

So Chicago fixer got busy and emoted. And took no questions.

I figure they’d be sending in that Luke Skywalker guy or Bruce Willis to go right into the center of it and blow the thing up.
Whoops. Nope. Sorry. Just having a psychotic break from reality there.
Clearly Matt Damon or Tom Hanks would get the call. LOL.

oh but she did chime in (well yeah, okay ….well after the fuckin fact……),

Members of the Chu team are credited with accomplishments including designing the first hydrogen bomb, inventing techniques for mining on Mars and finding a way to precisely position biomedical needles….

13. diane - 14 May 2010

Re last thread and meatloaf, thanks for all the advice:

I picked up some shallots Heather, and my mom parboiled them with baby potatoes and carrots then baked them with the loaf, since she had already minced the onions for inside the loaf. The tomato paste won (it’s really good mixed in with the loaf in my opinion) and we also added some freshly chopped parsley and left out the cornflakes.

Thanks for the charles shaw shiraz recommend ts, my mom likes shiraz, but I had already left and not read that. She picked up some cabernet (to drink), and I added some to the salad dressing. Will have to pick up the Charles Shaw next time. As far as drinking while reading the tubes, currently I prefer the Mickey’s grenades, quite cheap, and presumeably providing jobs in Milwaukee, the bottle caps can be kind of amusing to decipher too.

And yeah, sorry for the apparent fable, never seen chives growing in Cali like they do on the other half of the country, thick like grass. If they do that in the SF area I’ll have to come up and snatch some.

marisacat - 14 May 2010

i wsh I could drink.

I’m sorry hon, I know it’s not much help, but I’ll have one for ya.

15. marisacat - 14 May 2010

having fallen asleep as soon as I got the damned UPS, I am catching up now on the nooz. Arnold has blessed us. And doctrined us… and shocked us. And the Democrats will go along.

What a fucking mess.

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger rolled out a blueprint for grim work this spring, calling on lawmakers Friday to repair a $19.1 billion hole in the state budget largely by gutting safety net programs.

Democrats insisted they will fight the most devastating proposals, such as Schwarzenegger’s plan to gut the In-Home Support Services (IHSS) program, a program for the blind, disabled and elderly that serves 450,000 people; eliminate the state’s welfare-to-work program, CalWORKS, while dealing significant blows to Healthy Families, the state’s insurance program that serves 900,000 children, teenagers and pregnant women, and community mental health programs.

Schwarzenegger proposed $12.4 billion in cuts andassumes that the state will receive $6.7 billion in other revenues such as federal aid and new fees. “California should be in a position to safeguard its most vulnerable citizens,” said Schwarzenegger, while opponents shouted “shame on you” from outside the building. “We may want to, but we’re not because our budget system is broken, and now I have no choice, and I stand here and call for the elimination of important programs.”

He blamed federal judges for blocking cuts in social services last year, preventing, he said, “us from using a scalpel to go and trim some of these programs. We now have to use the ax to eliminate” them.

‘Junk Shot’ Is Next Step for Leaking Gulf of Mexico Well

Companies working to cap the leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico will try a method that involves pumping items like plastic cubes and knotted rope into the well’s safety device to clog it.

Still World Class Assholes. Still Got that goin’ for us.

Oil Slick EcoDisaster compounded by items like plastic cubes and knotted rope…..

Which reminds me.

Everybody gather round to watch something never done before! -mcat

Ain’t it the trute? Place your bets folks on the kind of cockamamie engineering that is trotted forward. I’m partial to my idea of course, “The Jersey Plan”.

Just tow huge barges of medical waste out and shovel the shit off . Pretty much it.

–> BUT with the advantage of ensnarling the oil in medical waste composite Sea Walls that will not only survive us and
Global Warming and offer the hopeful benefit of producing MUTANTS. (Always gotta have a Plan B.)

Uh, I was only joking.

marisacat - 15 May 2010

Can’t we thether some goat herds together to wander the Gulf and eat the oil? (I am waiting for that one, we’ve “played” with everythingn else)

marisacat - 15 May 2010

worse yet it was Commander Thad Allen’s idea… and BP and whoever just glommed onto it. I gather ti can work in some limited situations, again in shallow situations.

And one thing, we are in deep. In every manner of the concept.

18. marisacat - 15 May 2010

I am having a big problem with the back pages of WP… gah. So will leave this thread up, til the s l o w n e s s and whatever else, clears.
