President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, and their daughter Sasha watch a porpoise as they take a boat ride in St. Andrews Bay in Panama City Beach, Florida. [Walsh/AP]

The porpoise isn’t registered to vote. Nor can s/he be push polled.

And – they dropped a whole lotta cash while on the Gulf:

On the way to the airport for the return flight to Washington, the President stopped his motorcade to get the family some ice cream from a local vender. …

Obamas meet perky porpoise     No really, the NYDN wrote that.

hmm Maybe Food Stamps needs a lock box…. NOW they plant to steal from the coming budgeted money for Mother Michelle’s Child Nutrition program.

And no, imo stealing from one is not replaced by the creation of the other.

Dems may use food stamp money to pay for Michelle Obama’s nutrition initiative

By Russell Berman – 08/14/10 06:00 AM ET

Democrats who reluctantly slashed a food stamp program to fund a state aid bill may have to do so again to pay for a top priority of first lady Michelle Obama.

The House will soon consider an $8 billion child nutrition bill that’s at the center of the first lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative. Before leaving for the summer recess, the Senate passed a smaller version of the legislation that is paid for by trimming the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps.

….

The $4.5 billion Senate bill would expand eligibility for school meal programs, establish nutrition standards for all food sold in schools and provide a 6-cent increase for each school lunch to help cafeterias serve healthier meals. The $8 billion House version includes more money for expanding access to school lunches for children in low-income households.

The deeper food stamp reductions in the Senate version would set an earlier date — in November 2013 — for eliminating the increased benefits passed last year. A family of four would see their benefit reduced by $59 a month, or about 9 percent. The bill would also cut funding for nutrition education programs aimed at low-income neighborhoods and households.

“It’s very sad. I think it’s just illustrating what dire straits our federal government budget is in,” [oh fucking boo hoo Sheila. – Mcat] said Sheila Zedlewski, director of the Urban Institute’s Income and Benefits Center. “It’s unprecedented to raid one safety net program to feed another.”

Probably historic too…

bitches bastards cads and curs.

brinn - 16 August 2010

Oh for fuck’s sake — have they BEEN in a school cafeteria lately?!? The PILES upon PILES of food that is thrown away every single day is sickening!! I guarantee you that food purchased with food stamps doesn’t get wasted like that!!!

I stopped going to eat lunch with my kids years ago because of that very phenomenon. And school lunches are already insanely expensive — $2-$3 a DAY!! Multiply THAT by two kids times 187 school days….yeah, of course I have, that $935 for 9 months, or over $100/month, just for LUNCH!! Guess what?! Even if I were qualified for free lunch, I’d rather use my food stamps to make my kids decent lunches AND have $$ left over for dinner and breakfast too!

I really fucking hate all of these assholes, with a burning red passion.

UGH. Happy motherfucking Monday!

brinn - 16 August 2010

Oh, and by the by, I am not currently ON food stamps….am looking into it though. I have a feeling that I make “too much”….

lucid - 16 August 2010

Back when I just got out of college in ’94, the cutoff was $800/month to qualify as a single person. Of course, I made just north of that. Fortunately, it was at least possible to get by on $800/month in nyc at the time, provided I ate spaghetti and tomato sauce every night and never went out [and cigs were only $2.50/pack & I drank a lot of malt liquor].

brinn - 16 August 2010

Hell, when I was in grad school the first time (and should’ve been the ONLY time) from 87-89, I paid my tuition, rent, bills and had a fairly good time otherwise on 756/month!

I’m 3 now, and am struggling to do the the middle two….

marisacat - 16 August 2010

Food stamps are under the bus with White Grannie. Or, as lambert of corrente says, unterbussen.

brinn - 16 August 2010

Yeah, well, who needs to eat, right?

marisacat - 16 August 2010

Well you know what the R pollster, consultant, Luntz says: Feed them the words.

I always took that quite literally, he said it a long time ago…. the ptb know people are starving too many, and too many have barely enough.

If there was less hunger in American, less fear and so many with no access to medical care, it might be a different country.

No chance like this tho.

brinn - 16 August 2010

I’m a big fan of words, but mostly, they lack in essential nutrients necessary for the life of organisms….even the words that are huge fetid piles of shit….

Sadly. Hell, we’d all be living in the land of plenty if we could eat those! 8)

marisacat - 16 August 2010

If people had enough food, workplace protections, decent minimum salary and medical care they’d be a lot less desperate and fall for less. IE, eating what is offered to the starving.

The thing is any form of an era, short or long, of American domestic expansion is, I think, O V E R … it is going to just get worse. (apologies for the downer)

There is an ugly story over at corrente, of stimulus loan money funneled via Tenn DOT that is being used to bring in H2B visa workers from Mexico, who were then abused. Ugh, nothing new about the horror of the situation, at all…. but there is just going to more and more and more of that…

Here it is, the corrente story I mean.

There is a rumor out here that the solar company that Obby visited a couple of months ago in the East Bay, which got A HALF BILLION in stumble money, is hiring, importing, Vietnames engineers and soft ware IT people for 400.00 a month. I mean, that is what they are paid….

I cannt find anything to confirm it, but in searching I see that the Import Cheap Workers atty services, visa agencies, etc., is much advanced, from what it was jsut a few years ago….

brinn - 16 August 2010

Agree with you, Mcat, and don’t apologize, it’s no downer (or at least not a a new one) — I gave up all hope that the AmPeep would ever be afforded those “luxuries” about 10 years ago…it just isn’t ever going to happen here.

I don’t know what the answer is, but I’ve given up on the notion that solidarity will save us, we have been too trained to be “individualistic competitors”, even if it kill us dead, body and soul.

marisacat - 16 August 2010

oh…. everything is run for ultimate division.

Madman in the Marketplace - 16 August 2010

eating makes you fat, and mama don’t like when you’re fat …

ms_xeno - 16 August 2010

Michelle could hock a few of her fancy dresses on ebay and salvage a few healthy meals for the unfortunate, I’m sure. :p

2. marisacat - 16 August 2010

Here is something to put a spin of pure delight on the day… I read, in a Spencer Ackerman piece, that the main drag at Bagram AFB is…

“Disney Avenue”

Quite a big main drag apparently, they could dock a warship there, if they could get one inland.

Traffic jams apparently as well.

Yeah right, we are so leaving, anywhere.

Be sure and wave the flag appropriately today…

3. catnip - 16 August 2010

Ha – my spidey senses at work. I was just thinking last nite that Robert Gates was looking awfully tired during his last press conference and he probably wouldn’t last much longer in his job. News this am that he’s retiring in 2011.

And I see Petraeus is setting up a pre-emptive stall for the withdrawal from Afghanistan next year. Yes, Virginia, there really is a never-ending war. Meanwhile, NATO Admits to Killing Five Afghan Civilians in Air Strike.

marisacat - 16 August 2010

I think Gates wants his replacement conflab to be a backdrop to Obby re-elect snaggle draggle…..

catnip - 16 August 2010

He’ll no doubt go with someone even more hawkish than Gates. Might as well rehire Rummy.

marisacat - 16 August 2010

I saw a suggestion of Hillary… and she and Gates have certainly worked in tandem over the past year, to say nothing of her war mongering for years.

Hillary-ites and Clinton forces are probably having some rather triumphant champagne soirees these days.

Whoever it is will be awful.

ts - 16 August 2010

Ari Fleischer::Scott McClellan::Dana Perrino

Robert Gibbs:: ? :: ?

brinn - 16 August 2010

Hell, Gates is probably wondering why he ever let Dubya con him into leaving College Station — surely a much cushier job than SecDef, and most likely paid more too…

4. marisacat - 16 August 2010

A vet, caller to Rush is almost in tears that Obby did not mention that Saturday was the anniversary (65 years, and every day a war!) of VJ day… and………… and……..

Geesh, be glad to have made it out alive and try not to hump for new wars.

About it…

Madman in the Marketplace - 16 August 2010

probably some asshole who pushed paper in GA through the whole war, if he actually was in the military during that war.

5. marisacat - 16 August 2010

mamma mia… you know we are deep in the bile ducts of life when CHRIStIE of New Jersey is the moderate, middle path… he says both sides of the Mosqueria are politicking.

No shit.

Course I understand in his state sit some pretty hard core Islamic enclaves…

GOOD LUCK to everyone! All the mosquetiers…

catnip - 16 August 2010

“mosquetiers”

Ha!

And, may I add, what a fucking ridiculous “debate”. And then you get the Appeaser in Chief once again making a complete ass of himself. Wasn’t somebody (Plouffe?) supposed to be on top of fixing the WH messaging machine? Bunch of amateurs…

marisacat - 16 August 2010

I think the Wh message machine is a broken mimeograph. Seems that way… Purple and bluring. IIRC there was an odor off the fresh pages from those machines. And they might have been damp too, when fresh…. (We had one in grammar school)

marisacat - 16 August 2010

And, may I add, what a fucking ridiculous “debate

I find I am opposed to everyone in the debate. LOL

Frankly I could care less about a mosque or a mosqueria even, where ever, much less near Ground Zero Nero….. but I fished around (and not with the tightie whitie righties, either) about the Imam…. gah. In his own blog at HuffPo he wants religion in Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy (fuck that) AND he proposes, because there is 10% enrollment of Muslim children in NYC schools, that the Islamic calendar of holidays be adopted. Those two stick in my memory, there were more.

Oh his wif pushes what great female heroines there are in Islam (TIME links to that in their piece on what honeys these two are). Well I have seen how the Catholic Church panders to women using Mary, Mother of Hoo Hoo.

Gee no. Enough with fucking religion. We are DROWNING. And i am sick to death of the fundies. All stripes, all religions, all colors all of it.

catnip - 16 August 2010

And i am sick to death of the fundies. All stripes, all religions, all colors all of it.

That’s the bottom line. When it comes down it, if they want to play Dueling Archaic Religions, none of them should ever be able to build any more “houses of worship” if the beliefs are the issue.

marisacat - 16 August 2010

Hell it may never even get built… there is some speculation around that this immense and now fully nation wide snarl is to raise a level of sound that reaches Riyadh and other possibly interested parties. $$$$….

Who knows.

I have also read reports that the owners don’t have the whole parcel, part of it is still owned by Con Ed, Con Edison.

So where this all ends up, could be one more loud noisy long messy NYC RE deal —- or non deal.

Yikes.

Madman in the Marketplace - 16 August 2010

oh, fuck him

6. marisacat - 16 August 2010

oh noes.

Breaking News.

SS marriages are off. The Ninth Cir. is taking up the stay… accepting filings and will hear some time in November.

Walker tried to box in the Prop 8 “haters”, by destroying their standing in the case, they had to prove specific DAMAGE to themselves from opening up marriage…

Gah. Off to the long legal races… and some bookie should be taking bets this lands at the SCOTUS in time for the Big Re Elect.

marisacat - 16 August 2010

hmm Maybe what Walker tried to do will work, from Ben Smith:

Appeals court stays marriage ruling

The Ninth Circuit has stayed Judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling in the high-profile Constitutional challenge to California’s same-sex marriage ban.

The case is scheduled to be heard in early December. So hold the wedding bells.

There is some good news, though, for the same-sex plaintiffs: The court warned in its order that it’s considering dismissing the appeal on the grounds that the appelants — who don’t include the Governor or Attorney General — lack standing.

“In addition to any issues appellants wish to raise on appeal, appellants are directed to include in their opening brief a discussion of why this appeal should not be dismissed for lack of Article III standing,” says the order

Madman in the Marketplace - 16 August 2010

bummer … maybe this is just another way for the Ninth to box them in further or something.

marisacat - 16 August 2010

there was some commentary in ….. think SF Gate that this neatly pushes it beyond the mid terms.

It’s that time again.
The Revolution that will “not be Televised”

has now discovered EMAIL.

Kicking up 😆 our action efforts: email list
by kos
Mon Aug 16, 2010 at 12:46:05 PM PDT

Email activism is a key weapon in a modern activist organization’s arsenal, yet Daily Kos has never jumped in. 😆 It was less a matter of will, and more a lack of resources and expertise. Managing a big email list is surprisingly complex, and we’ve been too small and overworked to do something we should’ve done a long time ago.

And along with it, they discovered…
~ a dude named Chris Bowers.

Today, I’m excited to announce that we’re launching our email list. To manage the effort, we’ve hired Chris Bowers (of Open Left) — a friend and colleague in the progressive movement since I first began, back when MyDD spawned this site.

Chris will also be bringing over some of his electoral-focused writings to Daily Kos, but the bulk of his work will be dedicated to building a list with the power to impact policy and elections. I’ll let Chris talk about his plans for Open Left over at Open Left.

Who is delighted. Chris, say some words on the new rollout to deliver TPM’s , scrounge for donations and skim off the top.
Chris Bower’s ,everyone:

Let’s take some action

First, let me say thank you to Markos, and the entire Daily Kos community, for welcoming me earlier today. It is more than an honor to be working with Daily Kos–it is a dream come true.

Excuse me while I VOMIT. This from the “leading liberal blog”joint :: that, while Bush and Cheney were in office,
ran off Cindy Sheehan as an “ATTENTION WHORE.”

For those of you who do not know me, I spent the last three years running OpenLeft.com, which will continue on in my absence. Before then, I spent three years writing at MyDD.com.

Yeh we know, Chris. And for TEN YEARS, Mom and Dad and
everybody from Uncle Phil to Aunt Myrtle have been saying
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE?

But, I do have deep roots in the Daily Kos community.
{They will take you far! -bbhm}
I have been lurking here since August of 2002,
{Got THAT goin fer ya too! -bhhm}
when I found Daily Kos in a Google search for information about the midterm elections. I am proud to say that my user ID is a very low 123,
{THE SELL IT, Motherfucker!! ~bhhm}
and that I had the first diary promoted to the front page (although I am embarrassed by that article now). A few weeks later, I invented the tip jar, sort of, as a mean to get myself trusted user status. ( click here to read ElistJohn’s comment where he figured out what I was doing).

I am not here to tell you what to do. This action email list will be informed by your creativity and insight. …

Oh. please. Spare us the chicken skiined warm and fuzzy.
And Ssssomebody take some god damn action and get that man a fig leaf. About the only thing Bowser will need then is a poll to top his rinky-dink little codpiece off.

Better than one time Dkos BMOC Dana Houle-
now running a doomed Gov campaign in KANSAS?
Yes?
No?
Keep goin’ South?

marisacat - 16 August 2010

Email activism is a key weapon in a modern activist organization’s arsenal, yet Daily Kos has never jumped in

O don’t tell me. Who clued them in? Carrier pigeon?

catnip - 16 August 2010

No kidding. How many decades have e-mail lists been around now?

BooHooHooMan - 16 August 2010

Kos says they didn’t “get in” ..till now…. LOL.
(And always the “get in on it” pitch from this hawker :
the ex Henry Hyder when the gettin was good, the dot.bomber, the blogging, DEAN consulting, his other web vents,Streetwalkers, MotherProfits, his SportsNation.etc.. Oh he’s a Nationalist in the Circus Peanuts and Torch Lights phase of our run. And emphasis “Hawk” in the hawker, too…) Next thing ya know the pawnbroker will be hawking bogus collector cards. 😉

And the country is wall to-be-built wall full of these sorts.

marisacat - 16 August 2010

a friend and colleague in the progressive movement since I first began,

don’t make me laugh TOO hard.

Frigging nut case baby operatives, more like it.

catnip - 16 August 2010

Yeah, but is he getting Blogger Health Care Coverage?

BooHooHooMan - 16 August 2010

Yeh Healthcare from the Bloggers Union, that blast from the past,
gettin hard out there for a pimple.
And Blog Ads and the last new and improved Pwog 501c that Stoller and Bowers were piitching…
And of course there was the “Drinking Liberally”.
Like I needed a lesson from rank amateurs in that. 😉

I hope all the fluffed Neutered Poodle Rooters end up fighting over crumbs. I think the Aravosis tattling last weak – John’s a tattler – LOL –
I think it was revealing last week following Gibbs (wholly planned) slap at the saps. So where are they in line as compared to cops ,fighfighters, prison guards and teachers, etc?
It’s like the Blog pinkies have never been in a real squeeze before.
So considering where they , eh, “fall in line”, methinks the Blog Boys will be waiting a lonnnng time for Happy Days and cashflow to level out. And they can join the club with everybody else.

marisacat - 16 August 2010

I think the Aravosis tattling last weak – John’s a tattler – LOL –
I think it was revealing last week following Gibbs (wholly planned) slap at the saps

wow so much is happening i forgot about Aravosis and his “dirty” confession.

catnip - 16 August 2010

I missed that (?)

marisacat - 16 August 2010

When Gibbbs let loose with ‘dirty fucking professional hippies who don’t luv us’ etc… LOL… JA had a big melt down. How dare they, after all he and Sudbay had done during the election to help Obby. My god, they did “DIRTY work”, and they did it, by gosh by god, “QUIETLY”.

What a hoot! And that was just the main post of 7 or 8 or more that he and Joe Sudbay did on Gibbsy.

Get that man a sugar tit. Or whatever the gay version is.

catnip - 16 August 2010

Jeebus. Maybe Gibbs being involved with morphing Howard Dean into OBL in a campaign video should have given him the first hint that the guy was a first-rate asshole CHOSEN by the Chosen One for a reason. I’m just sayin’…

marisacat - 16 August 2010

corrente had a post up speculating what dirty work they did, not specifics, but on events in the campaign. SO much has happened that I had forgotten some of the campaign.

One commenter said one thing Americablog did, was being a big part of telling people that it did not matter that Obby used McClurkin the ‘Gays can be cured’ black fundie [gay] minister in NC (or SC, I forget now). Don’t get upset, be happy… Hopium is on the way, etc.

That was a ‘do or die’ for me… not that I had ever had a good opinion of Obby, but if people put up wtih that, esp GAY people… well Good Luck!!

Bowers has been Desperado Blogger for years. At least they stuck him in a technical position where he can’t bore (too many) people to death with his (now limited via e-mail) drivel.

oh Bowers is disgusting…

I love it when someone says “I’m excited”..I dunno. When I was in High School I tried not to get too excited.

I’d just like to see them Launch. Like for Neptune.
Speaking of launch..we do have lift off.

Let’s see if this embed works from RCP..

Maybe BowWow will make the difference for Obby and the Donks heading into the….Fall. Afterall when looking for quality in political polling, Dailykos is a leader in blub blub cutting gurggle blub edge gurgleblubblub

Do you consider yourself a member… (15+ / 0-)

Sen. Reid is no different than the Republicans who demagogue the issue. He’s no different than Sarah Palin, Steve King, Rush Limbaugh. Enjoy the company.

Well, I get paid for doing progressive work (43+ / 0-)

So, sure, I guess.

But in the derogatory sense of the term, no, I do not consider myself someone who is left for the sake of being left. For me, it is about making people’s lives better, and I believe progressive policies are the way to achieve that.

LINK PLEASE. Like from the Department of Labor.
Or the Courts. “…it is about making people’s lives better.
What parrot pellets.

Oh it could have got more interesting, but sensing Bower’s makeup might run or break a heel as harder questions might arise, questions of MONEY and return on “progressive” political investment say, that dug-in last supper, Tim Lange was right there with the guiding hand.

And you’ve got a damn fine record… (26+ / 0-)

And what activism other than this ..this…- if you can call lighting a “damn fine” cigar and head patting during fellatio activism – What activism has Captain Morgan done?
I mean Ya know…Since coming back from merrry old BP/England this summer. Of course he DOES sponsor a Neutered Poodle Roots “Scholarship” at one of their events (complete with kid’s meal and Burger King hat no doubt.) Precisely how the money comes or goes is verbotten less unterbussen, tho.

And It’s funny how no one from AIM remembers him as an activist in Colorado. And how Indian “reach out” is cropping up along with hydrofracturing rock to get at shale gas deposits.

We’re Risking Japanese-Style Deflation
Desmond Lachman, The American

Which for them was like experiencing an American Style Depression, following the export of our famous 40 years~ish American Hospitality. Repeatedly, on all counts.

Of course we got the whole Gulf Coast Recovery thing goin fer us domestically and the AfPak hospitality we’re being treated to abroad. So no need to let the Japs scoop econojargon victory from the jaws of our ‘mrkn something or other. .

Cuz we got Bowers now, and email activism see, and we are going to do stuff. With email. That will crash the gates of spam blockers, even those smart oriental spam blockers that hacked google and got Hillary all pissed off. Japan, China, Oriental, doesn’t matter – we got Bower’s now see…

PANIC BUTTON?
Dems Got No Warning Before
Reid Flipped on Mosque Flap

Oh Harry is a fraud, who I hope loses: a despicable Morman milkweed doing useful PR for the New York and LA money that sold uberleveraged casino deals and pumped up gaming stocks to every sucker with a shilling. And was a willing whipping boy turned front man for the Dems enabling War and wealth transfer ..
But Marshall is thoroughly in (and now of ) the New York bag for Schumer. Last year at this time when the Obsmacked villagers were restless, Markos, a lesser hack in terms of access and m.o. , was already touting Schumer as Leader even if it means losing seats. Yes, at his Leading Liberal website where he bans posters for suggesting voting against Democrats. Of course, Markos repeats the > TPM”S < he's told.
::
Essentially, this made for outraged nontroversy – a building permit in Bloomies NYC – has had Hizzoner , Obbie and Christie grab spotlight and repeat the same basic shit "concerned" but Freeedom! but CONCERNED. but Freeedom!.but STILL CONCERNED… and ended with them all saying how they didn't want to to stoop to politicizing it. I heard Christies bellow on the radio and it was. the. same. fucking. shit. But wouldn't want to politicize it. GMAFB, start to finish. Next thing , IMO, Man Tits Harry ,the Professional Lump Taker, was told to go out and make the statement after Blooomie went in and Obbie went halfsies…Which , by design, is likely to backfire on the excusemaking, pandering jackass that he is while CFO Schumer has everybody at DemCo HQ feigning shock. And no I don't see them as giving a shit about Harry's survival and using this cynical move to prop Harry up. He isn't useful to them anymore. They need a new pushover OR a New Con of a firebrand now. Which brings things back to New York and Schumer. I can see where one might diminish CS leadership aspirations coming into play- and while Schumer could play puppetmaster to an equally pliable marionette like Durbin, he has made no secret of his ambitions to be Leader. To me, there's something of a stench about this that goes beyond the Muslim bashing two step and phoney freedom ringing cattle calls. As if they're not enough already.

marisacat - 17 August 2010

I don’t know if Harry scrapes thru or not (vote wise, I mean), but his deal, for years, has been with Ensign, who is now weak kittens. At least as I understood it, Reid’s deal was not with the R party in Nevada… and plenty in the R party chafed at the deal Ensign and Harry had….

Time for Harry to fall.
