😆 … 🙄 … One speculation raised early on was that this was all loud hoopla, orchestrated, yes (not news), but to reach Riyadh, as in: Send Money To Cordoba House NOW!

[T]he Cordoba Initiative hasn’t begun fundraising yet for its $100 million goal. The group’s latest fundraising report with the State Attorney General’s office, from 2008, shows exactly $18,255 – not enough even for a down payment on the half of the site the group has yet to purchase.

The group also lacks even the most basic real estate essentials: no blueprint, architect, lobbyist or engineer — and now operates amid crushing negative publicity. The group’s spokesman, Oz Sultan, wouldn’t rule out developing the site with foreign money in an interview with POLITICO – but said the project’s goal is to rely on domestic funds. Currently, they have none of either. ….

There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia.

There will be a mosque in Rome, the Fascist ruler said, only when a Roman Catholic church is permitted in Mecca.

So the military spokespuppet for Iraq says it’s not a “war” anymore. Mission accomplished!

lucid - 18 August 2010

Was is such a slow news day that MSNBC had to suspend all of its programming in order to endlessly replay footage of military trucks crossing the border, while nattering on incessantly about nothing?

It was either that or endless “ground zero mosque” coverage.

Spike Lee warns BP’s greed could be ‘downfall’ of the US

When Spike Lee finished filming his latest HBO documentary in Louisiana on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina he had no idea of the oil spill that was to come months later. The filmmaker had to work quickly to change the fourth hour of the film to include some of the effects of the biggest oil disaster in history.

“We were finished shooting before April 20th, but when the rig blew up, and I would say 11 people got murdered, we had to rethink the whole thing,” Lee told MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann Tuesday. “So we made nine trips back and so the last hour of the four-hour piece all about BP.”

The new documentary, “If God Is Willing & Da Creek Don’t Rise,” premieres on HBO Monday, Aug. 23 at 9:00 pm ET. Lee also produced the 2005 documentary “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts.”

Lee is appalled that BP has been allowed to be the deciding authority on which claims it wants to pay.

“People here are still waiting for a lot of stuff that was promised from the havoc of Hurricane Katrina and the breach in the levees. We’re getting the same thing from BP,” he said.

“I think only 25% of the claims have been settled by BP and you see these commercials, [public service announcement] commercials, they run day and night. They say, like, well, we’ll decide if you have a legitimate claim,” he continued.

“That’s like the insurance companies deciding down here,” Lee chuckled. “Very few people got their money.”

Lee believes that the greed of companies like BP is a true threat to the US.

“I think this is going to bring about the downfall of the United States of America,” he warned. “We have people in office appointed and voted in and people in big business positions who only care about the dollar bill and people get harmed, people die. They say, that’s the cost of doing business.”

“That blowout preventer cost a half million dollars. Now, who knows how many billions later they’re paying out? If they would have just done what they were supposed to do, but MMS was bought out,” Lee said.

Lee is appalled that BP has been allowed to be the deciding authority on which claims it wants to pay.

But we wuz promised that Feinberg was in charge… any day now! Or last week… next week? Next month? Next year? I know they said something many weeks ago. Feinberg promised he had angel wings. Or Jewish Banker Wings… or something!

Haha Reuters:

WASHINGTON Aug 18 (Reuters) – The United States has completed the drawdown of its forces to Iraq to 50,000, ahead of the scheduled Aug. 31 date, a senior administration official said on Wednesday.

He added the combat mission was not yet over and would continue until Aug. 31.

“We have drawn down to 50,000, but to be clear, the mission changes on the 31st, when brigades that are left are re-missioned to advise-and-assist brigades,” a senior Obama administration said.

NBC News reported on Wednesday that the last U.S. combat troops had left Iraq and crossed the border into Kuwait, more than seven years after a U.S.-led invasion toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Administration officials said the NBC report was premature. The official said it had never been the U.S. intention to wait until Aug. 31 to remove the last troops scheduled for the drawdown.

What shits… Just hearing a report, a local man in the Gulf… He was told Feinberg was taking over payments AND as it happens, the two checks BP cut him BOUNCED.

Have to love the American way. Transnational corps and their US lackeys (Obby et al and every one else)

brinn - 19 August 2010

BOUNCED? Are you fucking kidding me?!?

brinn - 19 August 2010

Oh, well, here’s why….

marisacat - 19 August 2010

I cannot get the site to open, but i can guess.

There was wise speculation around at the time that Obby/admin got NOHTING on paper from BP about the 20 billion. Which was going to be a structured pay out anyway, a couple bl this year, a few next year, a few later… I figured at the time they might make good with something this year, less next year, then walk. Quietly…

And with th silence from Feinberg, Mabus, appointed as special something or other for Gulf Recovery, anywhere but on the Gulf (he has been here this week as Sec of the Navy) and so on, I am guessing something HUGE has fallen apart.

Earlier checks were supposed to be coming from BP funds with the supposed moneis from the 20 bil to be under Feinberg.

I am thinking it was all smoke and mirrors. ALL OF IT.

marisacat - 19 August 2010

got it open.

Yeah no surprise.

Cannot wiat to see the votes not roll in from the Gulf.

And the Obbys those lousy shits could not even take a walk on a FEW BEACHES with the dog. I cannot wiat for them to be gone.

Funeral dirge:

Key White House allies are dramatically shifting their attempts to defend health care legislation, abandoning claims that it will reduce costs and deficit, and instead stressing a promise to “improve it.”

The messaging shift was circulated this afternoon on a conference call and PowerPoint presentation organized by FamiliesUSA — one of the central groups in the push for the initial legislation. The call was led by a staffer for the Herndon Alliance, which includes leading labor groups and other health care allies. It was based on polling from three top Democratic pollsters, John Anzalone, Celinda Lake, and Stan Greenberg ….

Dead in the water. It hardly matters it is a terrible killing bill, the R will repeal it but they will leave in all of the gutting that was done (esp to Medicare) to make it look OK on paper.

deader than dead:

“Straightforward ‘policy’ defenses fail to [move] voters’ opinions about the law,” says one slide. “Women in particular are concerned that health care law will mean less provider availbality – scarcity an issue.”

The presentation also concedes that the fiscal and economic arguments that were the White House’s first and most aggressive sales pitch have essentially failed.

“Many don’t believe health care reform will help the economy,” says one slide.

The presentation’s final page of “Don’ts” counsels against claiming “the law will reduce costs and deficit.”

The presentation advises, instead, sales pitches that play on personal narratives and promises to change the legislation.

“People can be moved from initial skepticism and support for repeal of the law to favorable feelings and resisting repeal,” it says. “Use personal stories – coupled with clear, simple descriptions of how the law benefits people at the individual level – to convey critical benefits of reform.”

Everybody is tired of the narratives and stories…

USA Today:

The DeCoster operations have had several violations:

• The founder, Austin Jackson DeCoster, pleaded guilty to federal immigration charges in 2003 and paid a record $2.1 million in penalties.

• In 2002, the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission imposed a $1.5 million penalty for mistreatment of female workers, including charges of rape, sexual harassment and other abuse.

• In 2001, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that DeCoster, a repeat violator of state environmental laws, could finance, but not build, hog confinement operations for his son, Peter DeCoster, who is now closely involved with the Wright County egg operations.

• Earlier this year, the elder DeCoster paid a fine to settle state animal cruelty charges against his egg operations in Maine.

One of the brands they are sold under is the Safeway, Lucern dairy brand… but I buy California eggs, an extra two bucks and well worth it.

“Don’t look at me”, says Ed. Which is a laugh and a half. As is the seasonal fashion coverage of Philly goons at HQ which is spot on. Real Guys and Dolls shit if set in a heatwave. In a Depression. LOL.

More laughs, the summer – white- street machine traditions which convene at Brady’s in Wildwood NJ. Never seen it, TV’s “Jersey Shore” but nothing matches the Philly Street goons on vaca. The muckety mooks summer at various better digs in towns north and south. The Hamptons is is not tho.
But there really is a good book in all that. Of course cursory press accounts leave out the dirty cop entourage integral to the whole thing.

• Walk, Don’t Run: “He is a walking radioactive disaster,” one senior Democratic operative said of the president. But any effort to seriously distance oneself from Obama is dangerous for an incumbent; go too hard against the president and voters think the candidate is faking it.

“People know that a Democratic congressman will agree with a Democratic president more often than not, so the worst thing a candidate can do is manufacture differences with the president,” said Phil Singer, a party strategist and former top aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign. “Voters can spot a fake right away.”

What’s more, virtually every Democratic strategist agreed, if the president of the United States shows up in a candidate’s home state, the candidate should show up too. Dodging Obama by claiming a scheduling conflict only breeds more stories about how much of a drag he is, and about how desperate Democrats are to avoid him.

U.S. Assures Israel That Iran Threat Is Not Imminent
Published: August 19, 2010

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration, citing evidence of continued troubles inside Iran’s nuclear program, has persuaded Israel that it would take roughly a year — and perhaps longer — for Iran to complete what one senior official called a “dash” for a nuclear weapon, according to American officials.

Administration officials said they believe the assessment has dimmed the prospect that Israel would pre-emptively strike against the country’s nuclear facilities within the next year, as Israeli officials have suggested in thinly veiled threats.

Is it me? Tinfoil undies with laptop too close to the microwave?
I’ve just don’t have a good feeling about any of it.
Seems to me there’s been a power dump of shit in the bowl this past week that could serve our patented, Reluctant yet Justified™ warrior meme: Buttoned lip Gates chatting his plans to leave DoD. As the RW, Bolton et al, push the “Israel must strike Iran in days” meme.. To the surfacing of that Netanyahu video. Who knows what Uncle and Nettyhoohoo are going to do…but it seems to me it all can serve a plausible denial meme. In Russia’s most recent statement, .I could almost smell the popcorn , or maybe it was the microwave, but how is this bad for them?

The Russians, while perhaps taking a temporary financial loss on any unpaid Iranian nuke plant investment, they would more than make a score on the run up in oil prices. Their wheat harvest just turned to cinder this summer. The other thing, Our troop movements… “going home” yeh, right into Kuwait during all this is another thing to consider . Gates leaving. troops “leaving” etc…Seems to me all this serves a plausible deniability narrative as it does anything else before whoops™ ™ ™ we just HAVE to go in now etc…
They’ve been real heavy on questioning the nature of Sacred Relationships these last few..And just on the outbreak of Peace Talks Sept 2.. 🙄 (almost the tell tale sign there is Mo War , the US and Israel peddling “Peace”. Seems like a lot of shit floating around with Mosqueria suddenly this week.

BooHooHooMan - 19 August 2010

I also meant the ex officio RW, Bolton et al..

Also the bow shot from Mullen in the Guardian on Aug 1st, US has plan to attack Iran if needed, military chief admits…Set out for a different set of consumers.

IOZ has a number of great pieces up recently. And I found this , while cutting through the crap on Mosqueria, really stands out regarding Iran.

But in the real reality, the conviction of many of the world’s Muslims that America is at war with Islam arises not from the intemperate, gauche racism of Newt Gingrich, whom one doubts most Muslims outside of the US have ever heard of, butfrom the fact that America is at war with Islam. Like, literally. With armies and guns and bombs and shit. What renders the rhetoric of liberation unbelievable is the military policy of the United States, which is its antithesis.
