Jakarta, Indonesia: Members of the Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia hold placards during a protest in front of the US embassy on 4 September [Mast Irham/EPA]

Guardian headline and text for the gallery:

Muslims protest against US church plans to burn the Qur’an

Muslims around the world called for Barack Obama’s death at protests to denounce a US church’s plans to burn the Islamic holy book on the anniversary of 9/11.

hmm, the placards:   Only Coward Burn Qu’ran; Only Caliphate Can Stop American Arrogance; Caliphate The True Shield of Qu’ran; You Burn Qu’ran You Burn In Hell

Howzit going?

Think a speech would help?

And that’s Indonesia… where he is supposed to have some [ephemeral as all hell] connection.

Whoops.

I am not all that impressed, up down or sideways, I remain convinced much of this is bought and paid for, there and here, all sides… however, this sort of thing just freaks people out… and some, at the least, thought Obby was a  heavy wet wool blanket to throw over any acknowledgement of our actions.   Something we will never do:   genuinely admit wrong..

Now what?

😆

House Republicans have held a series of private discussions to plot their first moves if they win the majority in November — with plans to use spending bills and subpoenas to rein in President Barack Obama and satiate their own ravenous base.

Feeding the base! What a concept!

Republicans recognize they won’t be able to do any broad governing even if they take back the House; they’d hold just one chamber of Congress, or at most one branch of government, if they also win the Senate. So officials familiar with the early discussions say they’ve centered on undoing key parts of the Obama agenda and repositioning Republicans as the party of fiscal responsibility heading into 2012 – a mantle it surrendered during the big-spending Bush years.

The plans presently under discussion include defunding some parts of the new health care law and delaying implementation of others, withholding some of the unspent stimulus funds, and using the oversight power of Republican-led committees to investigate the Obama administration. …

More whoops. Off the circuit! Hunkered down at home!

CHICAGO — White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has called off a previously scheduled weekend trip to his hometown of Chicago, which would have come just days after the city’s longtime mayor, Richard Daley, stunned the political establishment Tuesday by announcing he will not run for reelection — fueling speculation that Emanuel will run to replace him.

Emanuel’s spokeswoman, Meridith Webster, did not specify why the former Chicago congressman canceled his trip, only that he “needs to say in D.C. this weekend” because of “scheduling conflicts.” Emanuel was a featured guest at three major fundraisers on Sunday and Monday in downtown Chicago for vulnerable House Democrats. Webster said the events for Reps. Debbie Halvorson of Illinois, Betsy Markey of Colorado and Allen Boyd of Florida will be rescheduled. ….

More slobberation:

Speaking to Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert, who conducted a rare serious interview with the vice president, Biden was asked what he would say to Bush as the United States meets a preliminary deadline set by President Obama in 2009 for the withdrawal of combat troops this week.

“Mr. President, thank you,” said Biden, addressing a hypothetical Bush. “I’ve known you for all eight years of your presidency, and I’ve never known a time when you didn’t care.”

Asked whether Bush deserves credit for the end of combat operations, Biden said earnestly, “You deserve a lot of credit.”

Whatever Happened to Obama’s Army?

What happened to Barack Obama’s once vaunted political machine? The outfit that put upwards of 8 million volunteers on the street in 2008 — known as Organizing for America — is a ghost of its former self. Its staff has shrunk from 6,000 to 300, and its donors are depressed: receipts are a fraction of what they were in 2008. Virtually no one in politics believes it will turn many contests this fall. “There’s no chance that OFA is going to have the slightest impact on the midterms,” says Charlie Cook, who tracks congressional races.

They’re all hanging at the Big L’Orange. And they’re annoying as fuck.

This is interesting:

So earlier this year, when the White House gave OFA a whopping $30 million — more than half of the party’s entire budget for 2010 — senior Democrats suspected a hidden agenda. Several tell Time that OFA boss David Plouffe, who ran Obama’s 2008 campaign, is using the cash to rebuild an army for 2012 under the cover of boosting turnout in 2010. OFA is putting staff into such states as Virginia, North Carolina and Arizona, which have few close statewide races this fall but which are all prime targets in an Obama re-election campaign. “This is totally about 2012,” Cook says.

Might as well change the name to “Organizing For Obama” and get it over with.

BooHooHooMan - 9 September 2010

Oh, LOL. Thanks for that.
Might as well change the name to ..

Get these men a sugar tit. A line up of sugar tits.

— Federal officials might ask the Florida pastor who plans to burn Qurans on Sept. 11 to cancel his plans, Gibbs said.

“There are discussions inside of the government about the possibility of doing that,” he said, adding that National Security Adviser Jim Jones is involved in those talks, but not President Obama. oh I think he should fly to Gainesville IMMEDIATELY! IS there anything of greater imperative in the nation? — Mcat

— The news media should “cover something besides” the pastor, “a desperate man seeking the attention of the better part of the world,” Gibbs said. He quickly denied that he was blaming the media, but he questioned the usefulness of having a TV camera at the church.

— Discussing the Quran burning, Gibbs mentions the controversy at ground zero in New York City. “You’ve heard the president talk about the mosque, and understand that … the anniversary of 9/11 that we’ll celebrate on Saturday is one that is, although nine years past, still and will always be very raw in people’s memories,” he said.

Al-Musri, who appeared at the news conference with Jones, later told a different story.

“What we have is a commitment from the office of the imam [Rauf] for a three-way meeting where myself and the pastor would fly to New York to meet with him to discuss moving that project to an ideal location that’s not controversial,” al-Musri told CNN.

But al-Musri also said any new location would have to meet the same goals as their current location – two blocks from ground zero – in providing a central and easily accessible location for Muslims to gather. “Those are real issues and questions that have to be answered,” he said.

Al-Musri said neither he nor Jones spoke directly to Rauf, but that Musri spoke to Rauf’s wife, Daisy Khan, who has been a sort of unofficial spokesperson for the project.

Al-Musri also said a firm time for a meeting hadn’t been set – and noted he hadn’t yet booked his plane tickets.

This country is just a cartoon. Drenched in religion. And jingoism.

I guess we can thank CAIR. FWIW.

If I am reading this right, it says they felt this had to be trumpeted because of all the increased discrimination against Muslims.

Ok…………………….

Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, says his group gets evidence of provocative acts involving the Quran all the time, and has issued a handbook to supporters offering guidance on what it should normally do about it – nothing.

“We get videos every day of somebody who shoots the Quran, burns the Quran,” he said. “We normally don’t do anything about it, because we don’t want to give them more attention than they deserve.”

But given what the group perceives to be increased prejudice against American Muslims, especially as the bitter fight over the Islamic center in lower Manhattan has played out all summer, it made an exception to its policy when it learned of Terry Jones and his Dove World Outreach Center’s plan to burn a copy of the Quran on September 11th.

So on July 19 CAIR sent out a press release announcing its intention to respond to “Burn A Koran Day” by distributing free Qurans. The release included a link to Dove World Outreach Center’s Facebook page for “International Burn a Koran Day.”

And that was how the threats of an obscure Florida pastor entered the international media blood stream.

……………

In case any one feels left out with the burning possibly cancelled or suspended, a Tenn minister is taking up the challenge…

Calif. judge rules ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ unconstitutional

By Associated Press

10:07 p.m., Thursday, September 9, 2010

RIVERSIDE, Calif. | A federal judge in Southern California on Thursday declared the U.S. military’s ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional because it violates the First Amendment rights of gay and lesbians.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips granted a request for an injunction halting the government’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for gays in the military.

Phillips said the policy doesn’t help military readiness and instead has a “direct and deleterious effect” on the armed services.

The lawsuit was the biggest legal test of the law in recent years and came amid promises by President Barack Obama that he will work to repeal the policy.

Government lawyers argued Phillips lacked the authority to issue a nationwide injunction and the issue should be decided by Congress.

The injunction was sought by the Log Cabin Republicans, a 19,000-member group that includes current and former military members.

Judge: Military’s ban on gays is unconstitutional

(AP) – 28 minutes ago

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A federal judge in Southern California on Thursday declared the U.S. military’s ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional because it violates the First Amendment rights of gay and lesbians.

Government lawyers argued that Phillips lacked the authority to issue a nationwide injunction and Congress should decide the policy’s fate.

The U.S. House voted in May to repeal the policy, and the Senate is expected to address the issue this summer.

“Don’t ask, don’t tell” prohibits the military from asking about the sexual orientation of service members but requires discharge of those who acknowledge being gay or are discovered engaging in homosexual activity, even in the privacy of their own homes off base.

Log Cabin Republicans said more than 13,500 service members have been fired since 1994.

Attorney Dan Woods, who represents the group, contended in closing arguments of the nonjury trial that the policy violates gay military members’ rights to free speech, due process and open association.

He also argued that the policy damages the military by forcing it to reject talented people as the country struggles to find recruits in the midst of a war.

U.S. Department of Justice attorney Paul G. Freeborne argued that the policy debate is political and the issue should be decided by Congress rather than in court.

Six military officers who were discharged under the policy testified during the trial. A decorated Air Force officer testified that he was let go after his peers snooped through his personal e-mail in Iraq.

Lawyers also submitted remarks by Obama stating “don’t ask, don’t tell” weakens national security.

I’ve been watching it for a couple of hours…. seems a huge gas explosion, it burst up from an open field, shot 100, 150 feet in the air. A wall of fire.

We had a strangely blissful summer, no big wildfires, 1100 acres here, 2000 there… but nothing like what we usually hve… then this very strange thing.

Everyone thought it was a plane, it is in the path from SFO, but no one there saw, actually sw a plane, tho everybody thought they heard one.

The fireball went over an hour til PGE, Cal Fire someone managed to get it out.

marisacat - 9 September 2010

AP is saying the fireball shot 1000 feet in the air.

I was repeating what a caller to CBS News, who was just across from the field when it blew, said, but the early films of the fireball, it was enormous.

There were alos early reports that a gas station was on fire, but it was finally an explosion on a natural gas line across from a gas station…

Homes on fire after explosion reported in Calif.

By TREVOR HUNNICUTT (AP) – 14 minutes ago

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — A massive fire burned homes as it roared through a mostly residential neighborhood in the hills south of San Francisco following a loud explosion Thursday evening that shot a fireball more than 1,000 feet into the air and sent frightened residents fleeing for safety, witnesses said.

The fire is burning in the town of San Bruno a few miles from San Francisco International Airport, prompting speculation it was sparked by a plane crash. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the agency has no record of a crash. Spokesmen for local airports also said they knew of no missing planes.

Pacific Gas and Electric, the utility company that serves the San Francisco Bay area, is looking into the possibility of a natural gas explosion but had no additional information, said spokesman J.D. Guidi.

Live footage on KPIX-TV showed at least a dozen homes destroyed, with flames reaching as high as 60 feet in the air as the fire fueled itself on the burning homes. Planes and helicopters flew over the neighborhood dumping water in an effort to stanch the flames.

A person who answered the phone at Seton Medical Center in nearby Daly City but did not want to give her name said the hospital was on a triage alert because of people being brought to the hospital with injuries caused by the fire. She could provide no details about the number of injured people.

Witnesses say a loud explosion was felt just before the flames erupted around 6 p.m.

At 6:14 p.m., Stephanie Mullen, Associated Press news editor for photos based in San Francisco, was attending children’s soccer practice with her two children and husband at Cresmoor High School when she saw the blast.

“First, it was a low deep roar and everybody looked up, and we all knew something big was happening,” she said. “Then there was a huge explosion with a ball of fire that went up behind the high school several thousand feet into the sky.

Several minutes later, Mullen was near the fire scene, about a half-mile away in a middle-class neighborhood of 1960s vintage homes in hills overlooking San Francisco, the bay and the airport. She said she could feel the heat of the fire on her face although she was three or four blocks away from the blaze. It appeared the fireball was big enough to have engulfed at least several homes.

“I could see families in the backyards of the homes next to where the fire was, bundling their children and trying to get them out of the backyards,” she recounted.

NOT to worry! The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force is on the scene!

I am sure they can just spit on a fire that leveled 20 or so homes and another 20 + are burning, that’ll do it!

ts - 9 September 2010

Maybe Obama can give a “passionate” speech and the fire will put itself out.

marisacat - 9 September 2010

he can lull it to sleep.

lucid - 10 September 2010

It was a Ponybomb… Nothing to see here…

catnip - 9 September 2010

I didn’t realize it was that huge when I saw a clip on CNN earlier. Wow.
