Obama’s view of liberal criticisms

Last night, Barack Obama spoke at a $30,000 per plate DNC fundraising event at the “home of Richard and Ellen Richman, who live in the exclusive Conyers Farm development in Greenwich [Connecticut]’s famed ‘back country’ neighborhood,” and said the following about liberal critics of his presidency:

Democrats, just congenitally, tend to get — to see the glass as half empty. (Laughter.) If we get an historic health care bill passed — oh, well, the public option wasn’t there. If you get the financial reform bill passed — then, well, I don’t know about this particular derivatives rule, I’m not sure that I’m satisfied with that. And gosh, we haven’t yet brought about world peace and — (laughter.) I thought that was going to happen quicker. (Laughter.) You know who you are. (Laughter.) We have had the most productive, progressive legislative session in at least a generation.

So, just as Robert Gibbs before him explained (albeit more harshly), if you’re one of those people dissatisfied with large parts of the Obama presidency, that’s only because you have something wrong with the way you think (you need drug testing/you “congenitally see the glass as half empty”), and because you are saddled with extremely unrealistic, child-like expectations (you’re angry that the Pentagon hasn’t closed yet/bitter that Obama “hasn’t yet brought about world peace: ‘I thought that was going to happen quicker’ (Laughter.)”). In other words, you’re just a petulant, unreasonable, unrealistic, fringe child who doesn’t appreciate the greatness and generosity he’s given you (h/t Jane Hamsher). Contrary to what many of you thought, it’s these flaws within yourself that cause you to be dissatisfied with the administration,

marisacat - 18 September 2010

He’s a waiter. I’ll say it again. I read the text of his “remarks” in Greenwich, a phenomenally wealthy enclave, last night.

Play it again Sam.

He pulled out his “bitter” and “clingers” line here in SF, in a very very wealthy home. I may deride religion and its oppression but I am not going to wrench mileage from people who perhaps have few choices.

He was slammed on his back, impressed by money, in both instances. He performed to please.

And again, someone tie his apron tighter, cut off his air.

DUMB LIKE US! Who do we liberals love to hate? The clerk in a grocery store

Simple story: Average people of the left, right and center are getting eaten by the social revolution defined by Reich’s data. For example, they are all getting ripped off by the remarkable cost of American health care—a remarkable topic which went undiscussed in last year’s discussion of health care. Schultz suffered one of his most buffoonish moments in the course of that non-discussion (see THE DAILY HOWLER, 7/2/09). But no major liberal or mainstream press entity ever attempted to explain why health care costs are so stunningly high in this country.

Duh. Those remarkable health care costs are part of the social revolution defined by Reich’s data. But did you see a single Big Liberal really examine that topic last year? Did you see Rachel raise it? Big Eddie? Joan?

We’re sorry, but no—you did not.

Our “liberal leaders” almost entirely come from within that top one percent. (From high within that one percent.) They display little sense of the problem defined by Reich’s data—and when they’re pushed, they tend to defer to corporate/major wealth interests. Over the course of the past several decades, the “liberal” world has produced nothing in reaction to the revolution defined in Reich’s data —no messaging; no frameworks; no serious outreach. Instead, our dumbest players—this would include both Schultz and Jealous—keep playing the same old songs, even when these songs serve to drive the electorate into rival camps. Even when they have nothing to bring to their claims of ongoing racism. People like this have little to tell you—so they keep singing these songs.

The conservative world keeps churning the points which defend and advance that vast revolution. The liberal world is a sad screaming mess. Schultz and Jealous are very weak players—but this is the tea we get served.

Whither Sharpton?

The press conference with African-American surrogates for Andrew Cuomo slamming Carl Paladino’s racist emails at City Hall last week was missing, as a few readers pointed out, one of the state’s (and country’s) most influential black leaders – the Rev. Al Sharpton.

It’s possible Sharpton was out of town, although his name wasn’t on the press release.

Sharpton has yet to say who he’s backing in the governor’s race (I’ve asked his spokeswoman).
….

He’s lying low because the connection between him and Paladino is Roger Stone, Republican operative and strategist…. Stone manipulated Sharpton thru the 2004 season, ensuring his puppet had a prime time speaking spot at the DNC, further, while all speakers at the podium surrendered their speeches for review and approval, only two did not. Sharpton and Jimmy Carter.

Poor poor Democrats, so thoroughly fucked up… and just plain fucked.

So owned.

Off to the Rapture….

AP Top News at 2:20 a.m. EDT
(AP) – 22 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES — Five adults and eight children from a “cult-like” group in Southern California were reported missing by their families Saturday, and the group left behind letters that they were awaiting “the Rapture or some other catastrophic event,” a sheriff’s official said.

Husbands of two group members, who are from the Palmdale area in northern Los Angeles County, reported the people missing early Saturday, and sheriff’s deputies were searching for three vehicles, said Captain Mike Parker.

“It’s not surprising given the hardships that we’re seeing across the land that a lot of people may not be feeling very energized, very engaged right now,”

No, asshole, it’s because they can see the ONLY people you helped were big banks that caused the problems and the auto makers (all while telling the unions they had to give up lots of ground as part of it). Where are the COLA increases for people living on assistance? Where are the loud, hard fights for expanded food assistance, expanded unemployment etc?

Yup, they’re NOWHERE, which is why people aren’t “energized”, they can see with their own two eyes that you’re just another con lying politician who is only interested in telling them what they’re doing wrong.

I see Tim Kaine is saying today that the candidates should be running on Health Care.

😆

Madman in the Marketplace - 19 September 2010

so is Steve Hildebrand:

STEVE HILDEBRAND: I don’t think it has to be bad. I think if our Democratic candidates would actually be proud of to stand for their votes that they’ve taken, not all of them, but some. People who have supported health care shouldn’t run from it. They should be as proud of that vote as any vote they’ve taken in their lives. This is actually going to help people in a pretty serious way. It’s not going to hurt people.

JONATHAN KARL: And is that what you see people doing though because they’re afraid this vote is going to be used against them. In fact it’s already being used against them by Republicans they’re running away from it, running away from the President.

There was a guest on KGO last night, part of the so called progressive ballot activism here in Cali…. and by way of talking about how, via the ballot, m a y b e something can be done to improve the horror that is coming.

And what was that “horror”…?

The mandated health care coverage. And on and on he went, discussing the mandated health care coverage that will hit in 2014. And elucidated what the Dems tried so hard to hide, every person will be forced, under law, to either be covered or buy coverage… and he added the other big thing they tried to hide:

There is no regulation in the laws for cost of health care. (and maybe in Cali we can mandate that thru the ballot, was the pitch)

None.

The host tried hard to hide the conversation by not replying. But he kept going.

Good luck little Dem doggies! Be sure to thank ObRamaRau.

I see Politico weighs in:

[O]bama praised caucus members for being at the forefront of the change he said he has pursued as president, which he said was “about a plan to rescue our economy, and rebuild it on a new foundation.

“That’s why the CBC was formed — to right wrongs; to be the conscience of the Congress,” he said.

But his call to action comes at a time when several caucus members are mired in ethics scandals that have also ensnared the foundation. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Rep Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) are both facing ethics probes, while Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas) and Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.) have come under fire for handing scholarship money distributed by the foundation to relatives.

It’s hard out there for a pretzel.

Achtung, Lady

Oh, man, I and a colleague of mine actually got these bulletins at work. We thought they were a scream. I guess I should’ve tipped off a reporter friend, but they were so kooky and underproduced (as in, How’s Microsoft Publisher 2003 workin out for ya?) that we thought it was some kind of crazy joke.

This is the Philadelphia Inquirer piece, apparently, in a fit of apologetics, Rendell has dumped all the reports on the media.

Maybe he should take a pill or soemthing.

diane - 19 September 2010

So apropos of the ‘day:’

An Aug. 9 bulletin, for example, called attention to an event in the northeast corner of the state – a picnic at Montrose High School sponsored by one of the drilling companies.

“Of note is that the Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition has released a special communication harshly ridiculing and criticizing this event,” analysts wrote.

Cody said she and seven other antidrilling activists attended the picnic and set up a table with literature.

She ridiculed the bulletins. “Yes, I’m such a dangerous person,” she said Friday. “I’m a 54-year-old woman who’s making eggplant parmesan right now.”

Obama goes to church

Yesterday, Mike Huckabee was quoted saying that President Obama could quell rumors about his faith by “leading the example of attending worship,” and mentioned that Obama once talked of finding a home church in Washington.

“I hope he’s still mapping that out,” he said.

Today, Obama crossed the street to St. John’s for his first services since Easter, and whether a reaction to Huckabee or not, it’s a reminder of a central inconvenience in his image that’s occasionally surfaced. …

Gah. Took him a week to put on the damned flag pin after conservative Dem consultant Doug Shoen said he had better start wearing one… and he has never taken it off.
