One student who said yes to an impromptu interview with a counselor after filling out a depression screening was a psychology major, a senior from upstate New York. As it happened, Dr. Hwang had wandered over from the counseling center to check on the screenings, and the young woman spent a long time conferring with her, never removing her checked coat or backpack.
“I don’t have motivation for things anymore,” the student said afterward. “This place just depresses me the whole time.”
I cannot even imagine coming out of school today into this depressed and frightening “norm”. And too likely carrying a too big debt burden.
I do think the handwriting has been there for years, but the college/job track is def the hard pushed one track route.
I graduated a couple recessions ago (the first of the “jobless” ones), and at the time the counseling office was overwhelmed, as well as the substance abuse center. Alcohol was my drug of choice for an eighteen month stint as the only delivery driver with a BA.
ugh.. in my cut-short-due to illness working life I quit a few jobs, knowing I could get another.
THOSE days are over.
Another thing I did back in the late 70s was fly wth marijuana (tightly and well wrapped of course), ugh never my drug of choice, from SFO to Austin, it was for baking cancer pain palliatives for my Austin friend’s mother. We’d hit his apartment straight from the airport, me heading for the wine or the champagne, he for the gin and he’d start the baking trays set-up.
No more of that sort of thing, either.
