The New Arab World

How can you tell that there is a new Arab world and that it won’t be pleasant for US and Israel? Notice that the Palestinian questions has suddenly become more important for Arab tyrants and their lackeys. Sa`d Hariri–Hariri for potato’s sake–issued a scathing statement criticizing US veto. More significantly, Abu Mazen (head of PA police (non)state received a 50 minute phone call from Obama and yet he did not succumb to pressure from the US to withdraw the resolution before the UNSC.

And the defunct Egyptian foreign ministry found time to criticize the US for its veto. It is a new world in which Israel will be more unwelcome than ever–the Zionist entity will get the real political feel of Arab popular rejection for the first time since it was founded atop Palestine.

Docs who handed out excuse notes surprised by response

Doctors who wrote medical notes over the weekend excusing protesters at the Wisconsin Capitol from work are getting slammed with angry phone calls and profane e-mails from people telling them they deserve to be thrown in jail, one doctor said Sunday.

The physicians wore lab coats Saturday as they stood on a street corner and offered medical notes to the tens of thousands of protesters who paraded past them. The protesters were rallying against a Republican-backed state bill that would eliminate collective bargaining rights for most state workers.

One of the doctors was Lou Sanner, 59, who practices family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Sanner said he gave out hundreds of notes and that many protesters with whom he spoke seemed to be suffering from stress.

“Some people think it’s a nod-and-a-wink thing but it’s not,” he told The Associated Press on Sunday. “One of the biggest stresses in life is the threat of loss of income, loss of job, loss of health insurance. People have actually been getting ill from this, or they can’t sleep.”

Many of the protesters who chanted for lawmakers to “kill the bill” at the protests were teachers who missed classroom time during the week to attend the rallies. In some districts, teacher absences were so widespread that entire schools were shut down for as many as three days.

As faculty absences grew, districts warned that teachers who missed time without prior approval or a doctor’s note could face disciplinary action, including docked pay for the days they were out.

Sanner and several of his colleagues from the university offered to sign doctors’ notes that said, “To Whom It May Concern: This is to confirm I have seen and evaluated the above named patient. Please excuse from work/school due to a medical condition” followed by blanks for the dates and the physician’s name, signature and medical license number.

It’s not clear how well-received the notes will be.

Madison Schools Superintendent Daniel Nerad, who closed his district’s schools from Wednesday through Friday because so many teachers called in sick, said officials were aware of the doctors’ note-signing station.

“We’re reviewing how we go forward in cases where those types of notes are provided,” he said Sunday. “I don’t know yet what the conclusion will be.”

Sanner said his intent in signing notes was to perform a public service. He said that’s why he and his colleagues were stunned when they returned home Saturday night to find their e-mail inboxes filled with profane messages saying the doctors should be ashamed and should go to jail.

The doctors also got swamped by hostile phone calls and Facebook messages from across the U.S., he said.

“We’re not political activists. We were surprised at the nationwide organized vitriol that has come our way so quickly,” he said. “Apparently we hit a nerve. I’ve been a doctor for 30 years. I kind of missed when politics got this viral, this national.”

I read that already for many WI state workers, today is an “enforced furlough” day. Since it is a federal holiday, I assume that means they with hold pay for the holiday.

Madman in the Marketplace - 21 February 2011

they started this under the Dem gov … unpaid day. They’re making them take several furlough days a year.

WHITE HOUSE WATCH. ABC’s Ann Compton hears from a senior Obama Administration official that they are “analyzing the speech of Saif al-Islam Qadhafi to see what possibilities it contains for meaningful reform. We will seek clarification from senior Libyan officials, as we continue to raise with them the need to avoid violence against peaceful protesters and respect universal rights. The President was briefed on Libya by [National Security Adviser] Tom Donilon last night and is being kept up to speed on events today, and we are considering all appropriate actions.” http://abcn.ws/gQ1SZv

Mystery behind two Libyan fighter jets landing in Malta, revealed

AP reports that two Libyan air force jets arrived in Malta today. Military officials say their pilots have asked for political asylum amid a bloody crackdown on anti-government protesters in Libya, in which air force pilots were ordered to fire on civilian demonstrators (see previous BB post). Apparently, these pilots refused to follow those orders.

France 24 also said “helicopters” frm Libya landed in Malta as well.

Moving right along.

Link to Military Technologies

Tanks are in the streets of Bahrain; protests have broken out in Libya, Iran and Yemen; and Iranian warships are attempting to pass through the Suez Canal, resulting in the ratcheting up of tensions with Israel.

As unrest sweeps the Middle East, some 1,000 exhibitors and an expected 50,000 visitors are descending on Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates next week to attend the region’s largest military trade show, IDEX, the International Defense Exhibition and Conference.

The relationship didn’t end when Gore reached the Senate. In fact, in 1985, he and Gingrich co-authored a bill titled the Critical Trends Assessment Act. The legislation called for the creation of a White House Office on Futurism (WHOOF) to “study the effects of government policies on critical trends and alternative futures.” In his career in Congress, Gore was rarely the principal author of a bill. This was an exception, albeit a doomed one. Although the two battled for WHOOF strenuously, it never went anywhere.
