Zagreb, Croatia: Policemen clash with protesters during an anti-government protest    [Hrvoje Polan/AFP/Getty Images]

Just for contrast, who is gamboling around Tahrir Square Cairo?

 McCain and Lieberman.

Really!, they are.

The Tweedledee and Tweedledum of cartoon politics.  If only cartoons did not kill.

****

Some Angry Arab….

The name Qadhdhafi or Qadhdhaf Ad-Dam

What are the origins of the name of Qadhdhafi or Qadhdhaf Ad-Dam (his special envoy, Ahmad Qadhdhaf Ad-Dam who resigned from his post two days ago and defected). Apparently, the legend of the family is that they were pious Sufis who kept invoking God and qur’anic citations until blood came out of their mouths, hence the name: Qadhdhafi (spitter or emitter) or Qadhdhaf Ad-Dam (spitter of blood).

And:

From Oman

A source who does not want to be identified sent me this:

“Oman is on fire and al-Jazeera is quiet, and so is al-Arabiyya who only reported on points lost in Oman stock market. And of course Omani channels are not saying a word. Reuters reported this yesterday: but the number of protesters was higher, around 3000; the police used tear gas and the protesters reacted by attacking the police injuring a high ranking one and sending him to hospital. The road to al-`Ayn in the Emirates was temporarily closed.

And this is what is not being reported:

Yesterday there was a demonstration in Sour and a police center was burned. Today: more protests in Sohar and the police used live ammunition killing a 15 year old boy. Banks are closed in Sohar now. The Wali of Sohar came out with other tribal leaders to calm people down but they were attacked and ran away. A police station was put on fire. It seems tanks are deployed there now. There are protests in Salala too. I don’t know if you know this, but Omani police and mukhabarat get much of their training in Jordan.

How did I get this info?… is sending me updates. info is reliable (my … People are spreading the news there be telephoning each other). If you report this, please don’t mention my name and try not to provide all the details:”

Let’s Talk About How Bad the National Coverage Is

So here’s CNN, making sure we know who’s REALLY behind all these protests:

A coalition spearheaded by liberal advocacy group Moveon.org held rallies across the country Saturday in support of public employees and others outraged at the Wisconsin budget-cutting bill they consider an attack on unions.
MoveOn.org and other liberal and labor groups held noon events at all 50 state capitals.

LIBERALS! MoveOn! Not, you know, teachers and steelworkers and prison guards and schoolchildren. Justmembers of a group that MADE them turn out. ….

It seems it should be relatively easy to have a simple movement for millions of the populace to lay off the TV, radio, and buying a newspaper for just one day (too bad it’s apparently not that easy) And – though it likely seems counterintuitive to many, particularly the yout’ – to my mind, it would even be sweeter if millions chose a day not to get on the web, let alone not watching TV, listening to the radio, or buying a paper because, since they OWN all four venues of the NOOZ, ….the Elite would Freak at that single-mindedness of millions, let alone the confused explosion of technobots which consistently measure the Pulse/Vital Signs of ‘The Citizenry’ via the web, and …oh my! ….all that lost ‘disposable income’ …..that the citizenry is not receiving any of anyway, anyhow …..

diane - 27 February 2011

yup, Stop The Machine, ….if only for one day, shouldn’t be that hard.

diane - 27 February 2011

could even top off the day with a massive too ill from stress overload to show up to work today strike ….(okay, that might prove a tad difficult though ‘do’able))

Officials: No forcible removal of protesters from state Capitol

State officials said this evening there will be no forcible removal of protesters from the state Capitol.

“A decision has been made to do what they’ve been doing all week long and that is to do everything to keep things peaceful and keep people safe,” said Peg Schmidt, spokeswoman for the police command in the Capitol. “There’s not going to be any forcible removal.”

But officials would still like to clear the building so that it can be cleaned.

“We are still looking for voluntary compliance and for people to leave because we believe the cleaning operation is important,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt said the plan is to open the Capitol again at 8 a.m., but cleaning will be going on throughout the day.

“There’s been incredible cooperation all along of everybody who’s been here.”

Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs said the protesters have been peaceful.

“We’re still working with organizers and looking for voluntary compliance,” Tubbs said. “No arrests have been made at this point.”

Earlier in the afternoon, protest leaders instructed people who didn’t want to be arrested to go to the State Street entrance of the Capitol, where protesters left.

Alex Hanna, a member of the UW-Madison Teaching Assistants’ Association, was one of five people who gathered at 3 p.m. for a news conference to discuss how protesters intended to stay in the Capitol.

“The bottom line is we’re going to be nonviolent,” Hanna said. But, “whatever happens we’re going to be back. This is obviously politically motivated.”

I did see something, somewhere in my travels on the intertubes today, about protests in Oman and I thought, Oman? AA is right – nobody seems to be talking about that.

5. catnip - 27 February 2011

Yet another year when I haven’t seen any of the Oscar-nominated movies.

catnip - 27 February 2011

and, Go Colin Firth!

marisacat - 27 February 2011

well you are nt alone in that… 😉

catnip - 27 February 2011

Ooops…Melissa Leo said “fucking”.

marisacat - 27 February 2011

I’m just relieved I knew who she was… some people are blanks to me.

Glad she won too!

About 600 protesters will be allowed to stay in Capitol

Protesters proved Sunday the Capitol was “their house” as up to 600 remained without incident and were not arrested as they had been expecting. Shortly before 7 p.m., police announced protesters who remained in the Capitol would be allowed to spend the night.

“If you’re here, you can stay,” Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs said. Protesters will be limited to the ground floor, while crews continue with an “extensive cleaning” tonight.

“I have felt the sting of hatred so deep that it almost ripped my soul in half,” protester Damon Terrell said as he addressed the crowd Sunday. “Those that feel that same anger, that would be torn apart by that same hatred of their fellow man, try one thing for me. Don’t do it. Be stronger than yourself. Rise above your own emotions.”

Shortly after a 4 p.m. deadline to clear the Capitol, state officials said there would be no forcible removal of protesters inside.

“A decision has been made to do what they’ve been doing all week long, and that is to do everything to keep things peaceful and keep people safe,” said Peg Schmidt, spokeswoman for the police command in the Capitol. “There’s not going to be any forcible removal.”

Maybe it all builds to something but kind of a anti-climactic Oscars. Have to say.

Not brimming over with spirit..

catnip - 27 February 2011

Kind of a bizarre show, this one.

marisacat - 27 February 2011

Disjointed….

catnip - 27 February 2011

Oh my Dog – a cameo by Obamalama.

catnip - 27 February 2011

There’s just no escaping him, is there?

marisacat - 27 February 2011

I missed that.

Blissfully….

But I see Oprah is said to be appearing. And I quickly saw one of the Banksy elephant installations… whiz by….

catnip - 27 February 2011

I missed the Banksy moment.

Obamalama said his favourite movie song was As Time Goes By.

marisacat - 27 February 2011

oh it (elephant) was just a flash shot of coming attractions.

The thing came to life a bit with the NYU film student… alive for a minute.

catnip - 27 February 2011

Ha! Good on the Inside Job filmmaker for stating the obvious.

marisacat - 27 February 2011

something. A small anything.

10. catnip - 27 February 2011

Nobody’s thanked “the troops” yet. I guess the wars have been going on too long…

catnip - 27 February 2011

Oh noes! It’s Celine!

marisacat - 27 February 2011

war movies haven’t done well… overall. That is one reason. Ah here is Bigelow….

I went to the ktichen and made toast during the In Memoriam.

catnip - 27 February 2011

Woohoo! Go Colin.

Well, that was my most exciting part of a snoozer nite.

marisacat - 27 February 2011

A really dull dead Oscar night.

zzzzzzzzzzzzz

11. marisacat - 27 February 2011

This was a lead baloon. It really was.

12. marisacat - 27 February 2011

worst Oscars I can think of.

The End.

catnip - 27 February 2011

Yes, I think that was the least entertaining Oscars show I’ve ever watched. Not that I’m crazy about overkill in the song and dance dept that they have some years but the humour was really strained and cutesy.

marisacat - 27 February 2011

Nobody seemed to even want to be there. Whatshername was game enough, I guess, but the male host not there, not really.

Presenters, winners all of them. Dull as could be.

13. catnip - 27 February 2011

Sucks to be kos. Too busy with the site redesign:

Doing all that takes a ton of time, and has made it impossible for me to write about politics. So instead of feeling guilty about it every day, I’ve made the decision to cut back from almost all political writing for the next six months. That should give me time to handle the administrative challenges ahead and fine tune DK4 to where I’m completely happy with it. Then, I can get back to doing what I love most — writing — just as the 2012 election cycle is fully engaged.

marisacat - 27 February 2011

Life’s a bitch.

ms_xeno - 28 February 2011

I’m more bummed out that Alan Smithee hasn’t updated his blog in almost two months. I hope everything’s okay in MN…

Ethan at 6th or 7th is also on hiatus, taking a break after a lot of blogging about the ME uprisings.

(I’m on hiatus more often than not, which is why I never bother to notify people of it. :p)

marisacat - 28 February 2011

Seems to me I have seen a comment or two of Smitthee’s at SMBIVA within the past two months.

Unless of course I am mistaken… which is entirely possible.

ms_xeno - 28 February 2011

I haven’t had time to keep up on all my reading since the Sportswear/Temp gods rendered me idle once more. So I may have missed ’em.

It’s amazing how the Eternal Job Search Clusterfuck eats up more time and energy than actual labor does. :p

BooHooHooMan - 27 February 2011

Well the Google crackdown against revenue scammers {Google “Bombing”, Search Engine Optimization, linkfarms, etc..)a class action waiting to happen IMO- which would adversely affect the Big G’s share prices… couldn’t come at a worse time after Moulitsas hired Bowers – who wrote piece after touting piece about doing so.

And his new l a y o u t * j u s t * s u c k s.

LOL. Of course he has Netroots Nation to fall back on.
Like the Party, obviously a Top Tier Brand now.
Surely Facebook, Twitter, and HuffPo are watching his every move. LOL

BooHooHooMan - 27 February 2011

And any more w h i t e s p a c e on Markos blog with that occular migration thing going on and they’ll be havin fish at the buffet in Vegas next summer.
Standing in line in T shirts. 😯 gurgle gurgle.

LOL

marisacat - 27 February 2011

I think the funniest thing of recent days is Reid standing up and calling for legalised prostitution in NV to be outlawed. I had missed it, like I missed the NASCAR scrap fest…..

What a scream! From saggy man tits. Geesh. Then Ensign stood up and sorta said, leave it alone.

BooHooHooMan - 28 February 2011

Funny you should mention Harry and his man-nubbins. I was poking around the Independents daily editorial cartoons and nobody, I mean nobody does man titties like Dave Brown there. He just titty twisted David Cameron. LMAO – I *think over the Tabloid phone tap scandal but I was just so Man-hootered Awestruck I couldn’t really tell. LOL. As I was at his rendition of Hosni’s Mooby boobies. 😆

And while not of the Man-crumpet Genre, per se,
He really nailed Obama, too .

ts - 28 February 2011

So basically Obby has gotten so painful to make excuses for that Kos is gonna be doing whiskey shots in his basement until the next election gives him something else to talk about.

marisacat - 28 February 2011

There you go.

That sounds like an accurate translation!

ts - 28 February 2011

But he’ll clean himself up if the investment bankers come a’courtin.

catnip - 28 February 2011

😆

ms_xeno - 28 February 2011

He ought to buy whiskey for everyone who’s ever suffered through his… uh, distinctly lackluster writing on their own time.

14. catnip - 27 February 2011
BooHooHooMan - 27 February 2011

“Businessman” Markos is prolly just playin chess with those venture capitalists till they beg him to sell. Word is their in it fpr his trendspotting research and polling operation.
😆

Aw. Not that he needs the money. Surely his folks will enjoy helping him out till Top Campaign Strategist Joe Trippi starts really handin out the dough again. LOL.

BooHooHooMan - 27 February 2011

Okay, laughing too hard to type. 😆

15. catnip - 27 February 2011

Just caught mt local news where they called the Libyan people “rebels”. So says the NYT too: Rebels in Libya Gain Power and Defectors

I don’t remember the Egyptian or Tunisian people being called “rebels”.

marisacat - 27 February 2011

They’ve been reporting the fighting differently too.

‘Anonymous’ takes down Americans for Prosperity website

From the typically immodest press release, which begins, “Dear Citizens of the United States of America”:

It has come to our attention that the brothers, David and Charles Koch–the billionaire owners of Koch Industries–have long attempted to usurp American Democracy. Their actions to undermine the legitimate political process in Wisconsin are the final straw. Starting today we fight back.

…Anonymous cannot ignore the plight of the citizen-workers of Wisconsin, or the opportunity to fight for the people in America’s broken political system. For these reasons, we feel that the Koch brothers threaten the United States democratic system and, by extension, all freedom-loving individuals everywhere. As such, we have no choice but to spread the word of the Koch brothers’ political manipulation, their single-minded intent and the insidious truth of their actions in Wisconsin, for all to witness.

…Anonymous hears the voice of the downtrodden American people, whose rights and liberties are being systematically removed one by one, even when their own government refuses to listen or worse – is complicit in these attacks. We are actively seeking vulnerabilities, but in the mean time we are calling for all supporters of true Democracy, and Freedom of The People, to boycott all Koch Industries’ paper products. We welcome unions across the globe to join us in this boycott to show that you will not allow big business to dictate your freedom.

BooHooHooMan - 27 February 2011

People shouldn’t so that.
Henh. 😉

marisacat - 27 February 2011

it seems to be a lot of toilet paper and paper towel brands. Quilted Northern, Angel Soft and Brawny…. I remember those being Koch industrial brands.

BooHooHooMan - 28 February 2011

I hear of support rolling out shall we say to “return” the Koch TP, in …”new and improved” condition. So to speak. Any poo will do for accompaniment. The ole Brawny brownie as it were.
Of course there’s the impromptu Gelignite, the ear of an heir for the more irregular and really naughty sorts.. 😉

17. marisacat - 28 February 2011

hmm Premium shows at 4.21/gal around town.

Clearly headed to 5.00….

ugh.

brinn - 28 February 2011

Regular is 3.29 – 3.50 around here….good thing I filled up last week (5 days ago) when it was 2.99….gas has gone up nearly .50 cents in the last 10 days….the speculators must be loving life.

marisacat - 28 February 2011

Regular is 3.79 to 3.99

18. marisacat - 28 February 2011

I cannot believe I listened to the Charlie Sheen interview on GMA but he delivered a line that makes one think of the Democrats:

They strapped on their diapers

😆 he’s referring to the CBS honchos who sidelined his show… but ……

No idea if it is an old line or not.

catnip - 28 February 2011

Just saw a clip. “You can’t process me with a normal brain.”

Yeah – except that we can there, Chuck.

marisacat - 28 February 2011

Move over Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson and all the others.

Breast milk ice cream seized over health complaints

LONDON—Local government officials have confiscated ice cream made with human breast milk from a London shop amid concerns the dessert is unsafe.

A spokeswoman from Westminster City Council said Monday it was responding to two complaints from the public over whether a shop should be selling edibles made from other people’s bodily fluids and awaiting guidance from Britain’s Food Standards Agency.

Hmmm…that might kill my SpermDog™ idea…

ms_xeno - 28 February 2011

[chokes on morning coffee]

I knew all those years of consorting with BHHM would eventually ruin you.

Tsk.

catnip - 28 February 2011

Oh, c’mon now: “You can’t process me with a normal brain.”

😉

ms_xeno - 28 February 2011

If this turns into a discussion of everyone’s underwear, you’re gonna’ see the GBCW to end all GBCWs.

catnip - 28 February 2011

You got something against boxers?

BooHooHooMan - 1 March 2011

😆 Ha!

Last American WWI veteran dies

Most of the Great War vets turned out to be pretty antiwar folks after they came back. The press didn’t like interviewing them unless they never saw battle or kept their mouths shut. Getting hit with mustard gas and being asked to bum rush machine guns will do that to you.

Not looking forward to the last WWII soldiers…endless trotting out of Tom Brokaw and quotes that “we should have nuked more Japanese cities after what they did to the Jews.”

marisacat - 28 February 2011

Maybe Tom could run out of Botox and decline to be interviewed. (if only)

A few years ago I saw a BBC segment on the nearly last WW1 vets, one from the UK and one from Germany. A meeting was arranged between them. Both rather dapper old guys, bundled up, it was winter, in wheelchairs and with nurses along. Both wept and decried the wars.

Yeah – not fit for US TV.

21. BooHooHooMan - 28 February 2011

I’m sorry but I really have to laugh at this story. Everything about it. Mostly,

A. The fact that it has entered my consciousness and I’m curious enough to fuck around with it. LOL. The irony is not lost on me. 😆

Drudge has been humping the Story for Days,
DIOR Designer Galliano filmed saying ‘I love Hitler’ in new rant… but then again Drudge also has a blip up Small Nuclear War Could Reverse ‘Global Warming’… so, ya know.

But REALLY , while I’m down with any story with the words “Fashion Guru…” in the lede, if only to drown out the Charlie Sheen riot being pumped into every crevice here, I have to say the whole JG’s diminutive Kid Rock meets Slash The Top Hatted Guitarist Bastard Son of David Niven get-up just doesn’t work for me.

So I dunno, this fribble Galliano might want to rethink the Nazis as arbiters of taste..

Anybody hear what happened to that line of Ernst Rohm accessories?.. Or anyone else considered Army Navy passe?

marisacat - 28 February 2011

American mil stationed in Germany generally are big buyers/collectors of Nazi paraphernalia. WW! as well, which they get away with wearing… can’t wear the Nazi stuff in public, as I recall.

Shouldn’t the French be citing fining dragging Galliano to court? (no free speech there, in that sense). They nabbed Alexander McQueen last week…. (think it was last week…)
