Blood and mercy in revolution

The last thing I should care about–and anybody in the Arab world should care about–are the Western standards and criteria and conditions regarding upheavals in the Arab world. One day they urge restraint and non-violence against their favorite tyrants (Bin Ali and Mubarak), and another day they endorse the armed, violent revolt against a tyrant (Qadhdhafi) who is not as seasoned in loyalty to the US, although since 2003, he has prostrated as far as his forehead can touch the shoes of US officials who visited him.

But my point is this: all those liberal, non-violent standards should be discarded at a time of revolution against bloody tyrants, like Qadhdhafi and all the rest. Mubarak should be dragged from Sharm Ash-Shaykh and should be subjected to the same speedy, Mahdawi-style, military trials that he imposed on innocent Egyptians. Let the Western governments shed their tears over that. Revolutions are bloody and Western standards are at least hypocritical. The rightist fans of Edmond Burks have convinced generations of Westerners that the French Revolution was a bloody affair when a couple of thousands of French people were killed: hell, the US has killed more than that in one day in its lousy war in Iraq. They can’t preach anything especially that their preachings at this time are intended only to prolong the lives of dictatorships albeit in different names and guises. There should be no mercy shown to the criminals of the Qadhdhafi family or the Mubarak family. Their rule has been soaked in blood since day one.

Arab revolutionaries should press ahead with little attention–if any–to what the White Man in Western capitals is saying. I really think that mercy at this time in Egypt or Tunisia or Libya may be the factor that could undermine the goals of revolution. Don’t give me the bogus Christian notions of “turn-the-other cheek” (when Jesus also said: “I came here with a sword”) when Christianity has caused more deaths and destruction than any other world religion. Enough already.

From the lead Cockburn piece over at Cpunch:

One of my neighbors here in Petrolia is Dr Dick Scheinman, who emailed his address list Thursday thus:

“I recently read a horrifying article in the NY Times about Afghanistan and could not help writing my representatives. Maybe you can too. Tax time is coming up and tax resistance is an option.

‘May I call your attention to an article from March 2 in the NY Times entitled ‘Nine Afghan boys collecting firewood killed by NATO Helicopters’.

‘I live with my grandson, 12, and as part of our making a living we collect and sell firewood. Nathan gets paid 25 dollars for loading and unloading a cord of wood from our truck. When I read this story I could not get out of my mind the pure chance that made Nathan a healthy American boy who could collect firewood and earn money, rather than a poor Afghan boy whose life was destroyed by NATO (American?) men (women?) in a helicopter thousands of miles from their homes. With rue my heart is laden.

‘David Petreus has “apologized.”

Perhaps he has children and grandchildren. Perhaps he should send his children over to Afghanistan to collect firewood for these boys’ sisters for the rest of their lives to atone for this outrageous cold blooded murder.(‘they shot the boys one after the other”.) Maybe the men in the helicopter should do the same. Perhaps Barack Obama’s two daughters could help.

Perhaps they should put on rags and kiss their feet and beg forgiveness.

But the least, the very least that YOU can do is to never, ever vote to spend any more money to continue this war.’”

As I said, it’s not so hard to figure out why America is losing the propaganda war.  ….

Oh yes… more on our wars… and our spreading of Democracy:

This is mentioned in passing in The New York Times: can you imagine if this was in Iran?

“On Thursday night, the authorities banned all cars and motorcycles from the streets of Baghdad, making it hard for protesters to reach the central square. Similar bans were announced in Samarra and Kirkuk.

Posted by As’ad AbuKhalil at 7:19 AM

And another:

This is what Obama and Bush call “Saudi reforms

“Saudi Arabia has banned all protests and marches following recent anti-government protests in the kingdom’s east, reports say. State television on Saturday quoted the interior ministry as saying that security forces would use all measures to prevent any attempt to disrupt public order. The ban on public demonstrations comes amid media reports of a huge mobilisation of Saudi troops in Shia-dominated provinces in order to quell any possible uprising. According to The Independent, a British newspaper, 10,000 security personnel are being sent to the region by road, clogging highways into Dammam and other cities.” (thanks Ali)
Posted by As’ad AbuKhalil at 10:40 AM

And. Etc.:

Like we did not notice

“The Wall Street journal reported Saturday that the Obama administration is devising a new Middle East strategy in face of ongoing Arab world turmoil, preferring stability over democracy for key allies in the region.”

Panic in full force.

This New World Order, just might not be what “they” anticipated.

marisacat - 5 March 2011

They may not be able to control it… for one thing the limited, myopic and downright fucking stupid “Force + US Exceptionalism” jive act is seriously overwhelmed. Inevitably stretched thin.

mattes - 5 March 2011

Not all the guns in the world,
Not all the gates in the world,
Not all the walls in the world,
Could keep the elites from tumbling again.

….my version of Humpty Dumpty. 🙂

The future belongs to the young. I wish them well. Our generation’s indulges are exposed. Globally.

And it’s not just the US, this is the outcome of something deeper.

For now, we just have to accept, it’s going to get very uncomfortable for us all soon.

And gaslines to Israel, still cut off.

Oh You have to love it… FOUR years old.

Fantastic!! :

Slogans and school children in the Arab world

A reader who does not want to be identified sent me this:

“I am a regular reader and fan of your blog. Just wanted to share a kind of inane story you may find funny. Shortly after reading your post on the Jordanian school kids I got an email from my sister, who works as a kindergarten teacher at a prestigious school in Cairo. She said yesterday after classes she was walking a group of the 4-year olds to the schoolbus.

The kids were walking in an orderly line when suddenly one started chanting: الشعب يريد اسقاط النظام [(People want the downfall of the regime)] followed by الشعب يريد اسقاط الأتوبيس [(People want the downfall of the school bus)]. Soon the whole line of 4-year olds was chanting along, to the surprise of all the other middle and high school students who were waiting in line for their buses. Most unfortunately, there is no video of the event.”

AND the school bus. Perfect.

brinn - 5 March 2011

Excellent! I feel better about the future already! Hooray for 4-year-olds (the real ones, not the adults who behave like them)!!

This looks like a job for you, brinn (since you still have resident munchkins): Killed by Cute: 450 of 2010′s Cutest Bentos

brinn - 5 March 2011

Job? Where’s the job?

And what the hell is a “bento”? Is it real food?
😉

ts - 5 March 2011

A bento box is a traditional Japanese meal served in a box. It’s probably as ubiquitous in Taiwan as well. Since it’s a meal in a box, it’s basically travel food or box lunch food. Apparently it is also art.

brinn - 6 March 2011

Thanks, ts — I was in a sorry state yesterday….I lived in Japan and know what a bento is (I guess I forgot!). I was so fixated on looking for the job that I couldn’t understand the content of the page!

Yikes!

catnip - 5 March 2011

I didn’t mean a paying job. Sorry! Aren’t those cute though? Somebody obviously has way too much time on their hands.

The Warning That Never Came: What The FBI Knew About Jerry Kane

FAST FACTS:
– FBI file shows Jerry Kane was investigated five years before West Memphis shootings

– Feds probed Kane’s debt elimination teachings, and revealed past investigation into domestic terrorism

– Information was apparently never passed along to local law enforcement

(West Memphis, AR 3/02/2011) Tonight there are new questions about how much the feds knew about an anti-government activist, accused in the deadly attack against police officers in West Memphis.

WREG On Your Side Investigators have uncovered the secret FBI files showing Jerry Kane was the target of a federal investigation five years before that deadly day last May.

The 19 page file was released this week, following our Freedom of Information Act request last June.

Tonight, West Memphis’s police chief believes if his officers had known what was inside last May they’d still be alive today.

The 911 calls were chilling.

A reminder of the day Police Chief Bob Paudert says his community changed forever.

“I felt like I let this department down May the 20, 2010 when I didn’t have the information I should have had,” said Paudert recalling the shooting that left his son, Sgt. Brandon Paudert, and Officer Bill Evans dead.

The chief finds it disturbing to know the FBI knew about Jerry Kane years before that deadly day.

Paudert had no idea what was in the file until we showed him.

“You could become very angry very quickly when you lose your son and a fine officer like Bill Evans thinking this information was stored away someplace in someone’s file and they didn’t want to share it,” explained Paudert.

Much of the file has been whited-out by the FBI.

Evening folks.

Deoliver47 over at Teh Fucked Up Orange Marmalade Factory is doing some “research” on me.

I encourage anyone with input to e-mail her promptly so she can begin writing her treatise.*

Thank you. Merci.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

* What brought on this intellectual exercise, you might be wondering? Or not. This. And that is how I came to be a topic of discussion in this week’s Black Kos.

Hi Deoliver47!! (I’m sure she used her fine Googling skills to read this too.)

Everything but the kitchen sink… the elderly “pimps” who supply Silvio.

It gave me a laugh, at least.

[P]rosecutors recorded telephone conversations between Mr Lele (79) and Mr Mora (55) in which they appeared to scramble around at short notice to find girls for Mr Berlusconi’s soirees.

The parties were held at his mansion at Arcore – dubbed “Hardcore” by the Italian media – and Villa Campari, a house owned by the prime minister on the shores of Lake Maggiore, north of Milan.

“He’s on form and raring to go,” Mr Fede told Mr Mora just after 8pm on Aug 25, 2010. “He’s just called me and he’s on top form. This is the right evening but who can I find?”

Mr Mora rang around his contacts, trying to recruit girls who had appeared on a health programme, Better Living, broadcast on one of Mr Berlusconi’s channels. ….

Statement by Manning’s lawyer: The Truth Behind Quantico Brig’s Decision to Strip PFC Manning

The Brig has stripped PFC Manning of all of his clothing for the past three nights, and they intend to continue this practice indefinitely. Each night, Brig guards force PFC Manning to relinquish all of his clothing. He then lies in a cold jail cell naked until the following morning, when he is required to endure the humiliation of standing naked at attention for the morning roll call. According to Marine spokesperson, First Lieutenant Brian Villiard, the decision to strip him naked every night is for PFC Manning’s own protection. Villiard stated that it would be “inappropriate” to explain what prompted these actions “because to discuss the details would be a violation of PFC Manning’s privacy.”

The defense communicated with both PFC Manning and the Brig forensic psychiatrist and learned more about the decision to strip PFC Manning of his clothing every night. On Wednesday March 2, 2011, PFC Manning was told that his Article 138 complaint requesting that he be removed from Maximum custody and Prevention of Injury (POI) Watch had been denied by the Quantico commander, Colonel Daniel J. Choike. Understandably frustrated by this decision after enduring over seven months of unduly harsh confinement conditions, PFC Manning inquired of the Brig operations officer what he needed to do in order to be downgraded from Maximum custody and POI. As even Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell has stated, PFC Manning has been nothing short of “exemplary” as a detainee. Additionally, Brig forensic psychiatrists have consistently maintained that there is no mental health justification for the POI Watch imposed on PFC Manning. In response to PFC Manning’s question, he was told that there was nothing he could do to downgrade his detainee status and that the Brig simply considered him a risk of self-harm. PFC Manning then remarked that the POI restrictions were “absurd” and sarcastically stated that if he wanted to harm himself, he could conceivably do so with the elastic waistband of his underwear or with his flip-flops.

Without consulting any Brig mental health provider, Chief Warrant Officer Denise Barnes used PFC’s Manning’s sarcastic quip as justification to increase the restrictions imposed upon him under the guise of being concerned that PFC Manning was a suicide risk. PFC Manning was not, however, placed under the designation of Suicide Risk Watch. This is because Suicide Risk Watch would have required a Brig mental health provider’s recommendation, which the Brig commander did not have. In response to this specific incident, the Brig psychiatrist assessed PFC Manning as “low risk and requiring only routine outpatient followup [with] no need for … closer clinical observation.” In particular, he indicated that PFC Manning’s statement about the waist band of his underwear was in no way prompted by “a psychiatric condition.”

No blathering from newsmodels at the end of This Week … instead Amanpour had a panel of Arab women activists, talking about women’s participation in the on-going revolutions. Sadly, they put Tina Brown at the table (gawd she’s an idiot), but other than the token western scold, it’s pretty good.

15. catnip - 6 March 2011

So, here’s the gist of how things go at dkos these days:

1. Respond to a kossack who says he reacts to the idea of not voting with his negative feelings by suggesting he actually think about the issue.

2. Get pounced on by 2 Black Kos members who interpret that to mean that you said AAs don’t think.

3. 10 days later, get called out by the editor of Black Kos for accusing one of those 2 Black Kos members of “racism”.

When you stated Sephius called you a racist (0+ / 0-)

which you continued to assert, you were calling him a racist.

Please – stop with the game playing.

catnip - 6 March 2011

Now That slimy little fuck taylormattd has accused me of outing people too. (That’s exactly what you are taylormattd – you’re a slimy little fuck.)

This one involves BHHM posting slinkerwink’s real name here as it appeared over at HuffPo in 2009. That’s “outing”. I guess all of these sites outed her too.

This is his attempt to divide and conquer. Slinkerwink knows that I thought she and NYCeve should have been pushing for single payer back then and that I disagreed with their support of that POS bill – which I stated clearly at dkos to her. She also knows that I think both of them, regardless, did a helluva lot of work on the health care issue and that that deserved support while they were both being repeatedly trashed by the Obama Defender Squad over there.

Stick that in your fucking pipe, taylormattd and smoke it. Your pathetic little games are obvious to anyone who’s ever caught a whiff of your troll-hunting bullshit over there through the years. Let’s see who has the last laugh about all of this. It certainly will not be you.

I kept seeing something about “Prince Andrew’s pedophile friend” on the news crawl here so I had to look that up!

Britain’s Prince Andrew in Trouble Over His Dodgy Chums

LONDON — British Prime Minister David Cameron has been urged to ax Prince Andrew from his role as the U.K.’s international trade ambassador over the royal’s embarrassing links to a string of suspect characters.

Chris Bryant, a senior member of the opposition Labour Party, noted Monday in Parliament that the fourth in line to the throne was a friend of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s favorite son. Andrew has also palled around with convicted gun smuggler Tarek Kaituni and American sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was jailed for 18 months in 2008 for soliciting child prostitution.

Royals behaving badly. What else is new?

Maybe he has Tiger Blood™ too.
