A praying mantis appears to dance or adopt a kung-fu pose in this picture captured by Igor Siwanowicz at his home studio in Munich, Germany. They are pretty damned amazing… one caption mentions what hard work it is for the photog, adapting to their temperament.  Like any portrait photographer who wants a session to go well…

The gallery at Telegraph and You can see more of his work at his website   A plain mantis.  (What a misnomer!)

1. catnip - 4 May 2011

Wow. Speaking of end zone dances. 😉

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Isn’t that amazing… it was the very first up… and I threw it in a New Post work sheet even before I saw all the others.

2. diane - 4 May 2011

I hope there are are some walking sticks at the link. The insect world, is mind boggling …I got lucky after buying quite a few praying mantis “cases” (look like a very, very small, tan, ‘paper’ hornet’s nest), to have had one hatch, and grow into adulthood …what a special, very fleeting moment ….

marisacat - 4 May 2011

hmm maybe at his site, I don’t recall Walking Sticks at the gallery. (I did used a photo of one here, months ago) There is a beautiful shot of a leaf mantis… and others…

diane - 4 May 2011

this Earth is truly stunning, I so wish I had the light childhood baggage, I once had …. and was, quite innocently, so in love with.

diane - 4 May 2011

and was, quite innocently, so in love with.

the planet, …..Earth …. ;0(

diane - 4 May 2011

(for anyone wondering how I got lucky, I placed them in garden places, I imagined might be protected from an insect point of view ….;0) … the wonderful, green rascal, stepped onto my flat palm, momentarily, ….. once was enough to last ….)

marisacat - 4 May 2011

I have never heard of those…. hatch your own praying mantis…

diane - 4 May 2011

they were very popular in the nineties, I bought them at Common Ground, a teeny gardening store, just a tad sout’ of Stanford’s Hoover Institute in Palo Alto, [California].

diane - 4 May 2011

on an analogizing note though, I’m going to let your comment float around for awhile, in my feeble mind, …and see what comes up … patience was once a virtue ….now, in this Progressed World …. we don’t have the time for it….??????? Why Not?

diane - 4 May 2011

(that’s why I’m such a “luddite” about “the web,” acronyms, which I usually can figure out, yet wonder why it is: … “our progress” seems to force us into ill thought out, and confusing to many, shortcut, CODE WORDS …a warping of reality and time …an illusion of: only a few are allowed to know … no time to think things out, or say things so that the majority will understand exactly what is being stated.)

3. marisacat - 4 May 2011

oh too funny. Senators have been passing around a fake photo of bin Laden in death.

When asked why he thought it was real, Chambliss said,

“Well, it looked like it was a picture of bin Laden.”

[S]en. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), a member of the Armed Services Committee, said she initially thought she saw an authentic photo of a dead bin Laden, which was passed along by another senator. But now she knows that wasn’t an official photograph.

“I do not know whether or not it’s authentic,” Ayotte said. “The important thing is if it’s going to be an authentic photo that it would be released by the administration and that’s the proper course of action here.”

The same goes for Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), a member of the Armed Services Committee, which was briefed Wednesday along with the Intelligence panel by CIA Director Leon Panetta.

“The photo that I saw and that a lot of other people saw is not authentic,” he told a local TV station in Boston. …

The No Cred Congress… the Stupid Administration.

Madman in the Marketplace - 4 May 2011

I’ve left turds in the bowl smarter than that stupid cracker.

Photos from the Bin Laden Compound

Photographs acquired by Reuters and taken about an hour after the U.S. assault on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan show three dead men lying in pools of blood, but no weapons.

The photos, taken by a Pakistani security official who entered the compound after the early morning raid on Monday, show two men dressed in traditional Pakistani garb and one in a t-shirt, with blood streaming from their ears, noses and mouths.

There’s the first leak. That didn’t take very long.

Lethal Weapon? [Update: Reuters Has Now Pulled The Entire Article]
Tyler Durden’s picture
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 05/04/2011 16:22 -0400

* Reuters

Update: Reuters has now pulled the entire article and associated pictures.

Navy SEALs know all about the lethal potential of super soakers:

“One photo shows a computer cable and what looks like a child’s plastic green and orange water pistol lying under the right shoulder of one of the dead men.”

ZH , and HuffPo does have the pics and indeed there is a childs play toy right in view.

The Atlantic has a piece up that isn’t giving Obby and Co a pass on this. Really rakes them over.

AND questions are starting to percolate up regarding the DNA time frame (not that lab turnaround is an issue) but on reliability: 2 days minimum for reliable test and retest. With stakes “this high”? etc.

As Marisa says: Not enough Popcorn in the World™ if this unravels.
And They’ve already clipped the trajectory they could have had by the swing dicks piling on with the swinging dickery-

Better said in the The Atlantic piece:

The leader of the terrorist group was soft, a coward in the end who hid behind a woman’s skirts like a little girl, having grown accustomed to living in luxury in a mansion. Almost everything about this narrative seemed calculated to diminish any possible perception of strength or masculinity in bin Laden’s reaction to the raid by an elite team of U.S. Navy Seals — men who are in contrast among the most mythic and valorized in our armed forces, known for slogans like “pain is just weakness leaving the body.”

It wasn’t just Brennan, either. Politico’s Josh Gerstein reports:

At a Pentagon briefing earlier in the day, a senior defense official said bin Laden used a woman as a human shield so he could fire shots. “He was firing behind her,” the official said.

In another background briefing early Monday morning, a senior administration official also said bin Laden put up a fight. “He did resist the assault force. And he was killed in a firefight,” the official said.

By end of day, that narrative — much like the narrative of Jessica Lynch’s heroism in 2003 — was being picked apart.

* Hmm. 10 minutes ago the Reuters was a 404.
So the ZH lede is wrong on the update. There article IS up tho, prolly just their server getting crushed. Buh BUT checking it again just the pictures of the deceased ARE pulled.

And now,
Reuters Defends Decision To Publish Bin Laden Compound Photos

catnip - 4 May 2011

The photos are there. Link on the left: “exclusive photos” (they are graphic).

BooHooHooMan - 4 May 2011

Yes, I’m thinking server crush would account for the back and forth. There it is tho, a kids water pistol laying right there too.

marisacat - 4 May 2011

I looked at the Reuters collection (BI linked to them too and then to Reuters), which included some/several screen grabs from the vid that was made of a walk around inside the “mansion”, please the conrete slab building. There are nice villas in Abbotobad, esp as it is a prosperous to wealthy retirement center for mil and others… but not that house. Which looks like so many in the ME. Yes it has a third story, some outhouses, a high wall along a public street…. and what looks like an open area, maybe planned to be a sort of side meadow for animals or vegetable gardens…

But gee whiz… it is not a mansion. Nor a European style villa.

The photos don’t strike me as inflammatory.. but more interesting is that even these simple things got out and now Obama is having the vapors.

Fainting couch to Aisle 5, beside the Bridges for Sale!!

Oh KGO still in shrill mode. Ain’t going well.

BooHooHooMan - 4 May 2011

Oh they’re getting it on all sides.
My feeling the other day was like Hey, YOU Called the presser

To me it all points to a botched raid and a coverup. I loved the irony of your point earlier about how His Historic Pretzel Professyness is now beholding to that very hype: people DO want to know. Learn and Get INVOLVED. Henh.

What hubris, tho – Their Original story was they Were all WATCHING it on Live Feed. They don’t know what they saw? They oversold it from jump. This burial within 24 hours, fuck they had that out within 8 hours of the Sunday night Obbie presser. They had to trot him out Sunday night lest they got full blown Carter in Iran disaster on their hands by morning. I don’t believe any of this shit. Why would burial within 24 hours be important after declaring him a perversion of Islam? After painstakingly making the distinction for years that AQ is NOT Islam? Why the sudden red carpet treatment after parading every other card in the deck around the gallows for a decade? All this bullshit about “changing the narrative” … to civility? Oh I’ll try and not laugh too hard.

marisacat - 4 May 2011

They oversold it from jump.

Exacly.. this was to be a cresting wave to reelection. At least that was the plan after, if not before.

I heard an interesting thing today, that by any interpretation is revealing. That the listeners and jihadi site trackers, meaning our side, watch for use of WEDDING.

Because, so we say, that word is used as code for operations upcomng.

Yes and it is used for WEDDINGS. By everyday people living in dangerous areas… Which tend to leave too many of weddings and large family gtherings in a bloody mess, dead women, children, men, old people, extended families, dead.

This easily could have started as so many night operations to raid a place did… then they, for whatever reason, needed a fast cover story.

Every since the debaucle of the so called informant who was brought inside an operating base inside Afghanistan, allowed close, against all rules!, to multiple CIA officers (think he killed – 8 – ) because he had sold them that he had infor on Osama… it was clear, ObRama has placed huge pressure on Getting Osama.

BooHooHooMan - 4 May 2011

Weddings.. as Code for sumpin big. Given our loons , I guess the Royals were lucky last weekend to get out of Westminster Abbey alive.

marisacat - 4 May 2011

As I say, Belgium has not seated a government in months.. nearly a year I think by now. (some street events about it, a sort of OMG what can we do? We can laugh! have been a scream!)

Shouldn’t we invade put that country in order?

marisacat - 4 May 2011

We are not doing well when Times of India says the story line is more like a “Bollywood movie”, than anything else… (linked in the previoius thread)

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Thanks for the Atlantic piece… I like Garance. I am sure, and I have read some of it, she takes orders, hs done hit pieces, did whatever to get from The Prospect to Wapo and now to the Atlantic… BUT she is a trained reporter and not dumb.

This may be a happy convergence. And even tho I have yawned thru many an Atlantic article and blog mess (Sully, McArdle, others there, gah!) I bet it hurts the West Wing if this wounds.

The story line is so badly broken, it cannot hold. It just cannot.

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Reading it.. she deserves a fucking MEDAL for pointing out the concrete slab house was MOLDY with no airconditioning.

catnip - 4 May 2011

Okay. I can see that as a topic but the rest of this is more than a few decades too late:

The Senate committee is chaired by Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii. Thursday’s 2:15p hearing will examine how Wild West shows, Hollywood films, and Indigenous-themed sports mascots have shaped the perception of Native Americans, according to a press release.

How about holding a hearing about fucking abject poverty on the reservations instead, geniuses?

marisacat - 4 May 2011

I think it is only because Slobster pretends the varioius Indian peoples just wuv him. He wants to take calls from the Rez Police and say, Buddy I am with you! POC have to stick together. Or some such shite.

8. diane - 4 May 2011

as much as I find so much value in much of what Who is IOZ writes, perhaps he should amend his post of yesterday, at least as concerns the breast beating [Pittsburgh,] PA wimminz (and likely, as was pointed out to him in the comments, many chest beating PA menz, not to say breast/chest beaters are a majority, ..anywhere, ….but they are so fucking loud ……any sane person might think they were a majority.

…..a sense of self-preservation….

(ugh my hometown dispays the ugly when we’re capable of far better than that)

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Do you mean this one? Carthago Delenda Jest

I am missing where he mentioned PA women… or men. Unless I missed it, he was making a sarcastic comment that at least chest beating and stomping etc was in NYC and DC. (and yeah the Phillies game, as mentioned in comments, ws widely publicised with its USA! USA! shite. I have no idea how he missed that…)

PA is a really dumb state.

Which Cali is as well… which is why I can say that about PA. And a few others… too.

diane - 4 May 2011

no he didn’t mention gender, I was referring to his exclusion of PA from chest beating. There was chest beating in PA for bombing the fuck out of Iraq (unless I wasn’t living where I thought I was), and looks like there’s chest beating in PA currently. (I’m not aware of any state I would move to without some ugh moment at this point, certainly not PA or Ca …. I think they all have their nightmares, despite pretty decent people living in those states.)

marisacat - 4 May 2011

See.. I htought the whole thng was sarcastic.

ugh I read the River Daughter stuff. Well she is ahppy.. I guess with war, with firefights in bedrooms and so on.

I don’t care one way or the other about bin Laden, esp as we know nothing, really nothing at all.. Sometimes I get an image of the earth, with all the souls dead because of us, our minions, our enforced rules, our global garrison, the way we promote war, starvation and illness…

It is quite an image.

diane - 4 May 2011

;0( heart breaking image …my “dreams” have been very much like that lately ..real drag, at one time, I at least enjoyed my sleep time…. sigh….

9. BooHooHooMan - 4 May 2011

Firefight my ass.
Sound like the whole joint was unarmed.

Net update? Oh Yah! We seized Weapons!

catnip - 4 May 2011

Maybe it’s just me but couldn’t they have tasered the guy?

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Gee one would think. But a charging woman in near full wrap, perhaps with a water gun, unhinged the Big Bad Guys …

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Other than the So Perfect Seals left behind (or dropped) the passport of the bin Laden wife, we have no fucking clue WHO we killed.

catnip - 4 May 2011

Assorted brown Muslims. That’s all you need to know!

catnip - 4 May 2011

10. BooHooHooMan - 4 May 2011

Oh this is getting embarrassing

Several weapons were found in the room where the terror chief died, including AK-47 assault rifles and side arms, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity as they offered the most recent in a series of increasingly detailed and sometimes-shifting accounts of bin Laden’s final minutes after a decade on the run.

And the DNA match? That was sopposed to come from his sister?

Administration officials have said bin Laden’s body was identified by several means, including a DNA test. Members of Congress who received a briefing during the day said a sample from the body killed at the compound in Pakistan was compared to known DNA from bin Laden’s mother and three sons.

catnip - 4 May 2011

This all begs the question: why did Obamalama hold a late nite presser without the DOD or CIA spokespuppets? They’ve left the incompetent Brennan, the contradictory Panetta and Carneybarker to filter through the details – getting them wrong every single day.

BooHooHooMan - 4 May 2011

Fire code regulations for number of bluffers and fluffers in a single building?

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Panetta looks like some old hump, Brennan looks not fully awake… and Carnie is … basically a clueless cub scout.

They all need a parent or a caretaker.

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Buuut the sister gave her BRAIN. What of the poor sister.

Suppsoedly they transmitted electronically the DNA from the departing helicopter.

Oh please. I am sure there are hurry-up, on-the-spot, in-the-field kits for quick, partial testing of DNA, but anything definitive!? really. Come on.

11. marisacat - 4 May 2011

HA! I am entertaining myself watching one of the films that ended up as part of the Citizens United case.. The one ABC did on the mess leading up to 9/11, 5 hours, split between Bill C and Bush admins… and i am sure tougher on Bill, by a long shot… that the Dems got censored and never shown. never released in any form, at all…

A few months ago I rented the movie David Bossie did of Hillary. which I htink ws the lead issue in Citizens United… hell it was weak.

ABC: Top Secret Stealth Helicopter Program Revealed in Osama Bin Laden Raid: Experts

There’s a reason Bush is comin to provide Obby cover tomorrow in New York. Which has been scaled Waaay back. Now speech just a dropping off a wreath. Fuck the way this is going he’ll have to wire the flowers.

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Maybe he can get an early Mother’s Day FTD discount.

Being pretzel and all.

marisacat - 4 May 2011

Neighbors of bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, told ABC News they didn’t hear the helicopters the night of the Sunday raid until they were directly overhead. The rotor covering, along with a special rotor design, suppressed the choppers noise while inbound, Bill Sweetman, editor and chief of Defense Technology International, said.

well the tweeter from the cafe, who was awake at 1 am Abbottobad time, did hear them. So maybe the stealth copter was just the first one in. Seems kind of SMALL tho. yeah I love that modesty curtain. LOL hid it so well (not)

diane - 4 May 2011

They seem to have paid quite a bit of attention to the helicopter dialogue from the jump, it struck me when one of the earliest, presumeably non AP pieces came out, before Obombster’s speech, that they noted this detail:

One of the U.S. helicopters, a CH47 Chinook, was damaged but not destroyed during the operation, and U.S. forces elected to destroy it themselves with explosives…..

diane - 4 May 2011

(sorry, cleaner link)

diane - 4 May 2011

If that’s actually a fact, I guess someone has mastered the illusive hovering technolgy. Must say it was a tad bewildering to see that odd, sharply angled, exploded! …tarped helicopter behind that raggedy ass, orange “mansion” (damn and I thought Cali was bad with the million dollar huts) fence …and then to see it again, not totally hidden, behind that three sided cloth ‘fence, in front of a large excavated foundation of some sort …and then, being tractored out by the ‘local riff raff’ …. any outsider’s guess at this early stage in the untangling …. :0) ;0)

marisacat - 4 May 2011

well it is not worth a million. that is some tag the propaganda spin put on it.

I see that a deputy leader of the Canadian New Democrats (Mulcair?) does not believe there are photos of the bin Laden remains.

diane - 5 May 2011

I think if they killed him, there were photos, and I don’t really have any` knee jerk as to whether they did, or didn’t, or when they did or didn’t … he could be in Paraguay with Poppy for all I know …lies and half truths all over the map.

Whatever was done on May Day, it was clearly not done for the purpose of Justice for the millions of worldwide victims of 911, not with that timing, is my thought.

I would have believed he was killed if Bush, Cheney, et al, had been charged with crimes against humanity, since they weren’t, I don’t believe anything that comes out of DC.
