Chinese police have quelled a mass riot sparked by rumours that a disabled fruit seller had been beaten to death by local officials.

State media reported that hundreds of people threw stones and clashed with police on the streets of Anshun, in the southern Guizhou province.

The authorities said they would carry out an autopsy on the fruit seller to determine how he died.

Similar rumours sparked days of rioting in Guangdong province in June.

The Guangdong riot snowballed into a wider protest about official corruption and discrimination against migrant workers.

The madness that is the proposed tax repatriation holiday is continuing and gathering steam. More and more members of congress are coming out of the woodwork, scratching their chins in contemplative consideration as it were, pretending that they’ve just realized what a great day a corporate tax holiday would be – not that they’ve taken gazillions of dollars from the firms lobbying for it or anything.

The latest convert seems to be Nevada Democrat Shelley Berkley. Berkley’s plan is to offer a pseudo-holiday – not the full-fledged happy-ending massage the companies wanted (i.e. a reduction from 35 percent+ to 5.25 percent) but a mere ten-point shave:

Representative Shelley Berkley, a Nevada Democrat, is the latest lawmaker to consider legislation allowing multinational companies to send offshore profits to the U.S. at a reduced tax rate.

Her proposal, which was confirmed yesterday by Berkley’s communications director, David Cherry, would allow companies to return profits to the U.S. at a 25 percent tax rate, 10 percentage points below the maximum statutory rate. Most companies publicly supporting a holiday, such as Duke Energy Corp., have spoken favorably of the 5.25 percent rate that is being offered by Representative Kevin Brady, a Texas Republican.

One thing that people must understand about this tax repatriation business is that it’s a wholly bipartisan affair. It’s not solely the work of evil Republicans. This is a scheme that requires heavies in both parties to help ram the knotty, hard-to-sell legislation through. On the Democratic side, unsurprisingly, the main actor is going to be Chuck Schumer. John Kerry is also involved with this nastiness. Barbara Boxer led the 2004 effort and the failed 2009 campaign to get a holiday, and is rumored to be lurking somewhere in this business.

Note that Cisco, a California corporate heavyweight and one of the companies lobbying most ravenously for this tax holiday, has been a consistent lifelong contributor to Boxer. You’ll find Cicso is also a contributor to most of the other congressional allies in the repatriation holiday effort, as are companies like Motorola, Merck , Pfizer, Proctor and Gamble, Ford, and others.

I’m still shocked at the lack of press coverage of this. In all this scratching and clawing over dimes here and there, and clamoring for trillions in cuts, we’re seriously considering what amounts to a gigantic new systematic loophole for corporate taxes?

On Sunday, Cenk Uygur was interviewed by CNN’s Howard Kurtz about Uygur’s departure from MSNBC, and Ugyur claimed that Al Sharpton — widely reported to be his replacement — vowed in a 60 Minutes interview never to criticize President Obama under any circumstances. When I first heard Ugyur make this claim, I assumed it was hyperbole — until I watched the video and read the transcript of the Sharpton interview. The 60 Minutes segment was aired on May 19, 2011, and chronicles what it calls Sharpton’s “metamorphosis: today he’s down right tame. So much so, that he has made his way into the establishment.” It includes this:

Sharpton told us that having a black president is a challenge: if he finds fault with Mr. Obama, he’d be aiding those who want to destroy him. So he has decided not to criticize the president about anything – even about black unemployment, which is twice the national rate.

HOWEVER it has been changing for at least a couple of decades.

Think of Russian immigration ALONE. they tried to mount a right wing absolutist xtian coup at a Cal State campus last year, up on the Sierra Foothils, think it is referred to as ‘Evergreen”, a lot of adult “returning” students and so on… the Russians were anti gay, anti women… they tried to take over the Student Council, there was a very tense election on campus.

The Russian enclaves all thru Norther Cal, immigrant etc are much much larger than they ever were. I got my eyes opened a lot when my mother was at Mt Zion for a month in 97. I WAS HORRIFIED. I did not know it was known as the “Medi-Cal hospital”, that UCSF shuttle those patients to… and one reality was a lot of non English speaking immigrant Russians… and they had nurses and doctors on staff, Russian extraction, to deal with it… (My mother was not on Medi-Cal. Her doctor was attached to Mt Zion and UCSF and UCSF is TERRIBLE… at first I was glad to have a choice).

The rise in fundamental extreme religions is not limited to Cali. The emergence of hard line evangelical wings of what used to be more limited games (Catholics for one, but wings of Lutherism, other Protestant religions as well).

There are enclaves of hard line Asian immigration that are what I call “Mission convert” Asians. Utter lunatics. Whack job Catholic AND various evangelical Filipinos, many more than there were 3 decades ago.

On and on it goes.

Not to even start on muslims.

diane - 27 July 2011: Oops, you forget Ananda … (I know …too fuckin many in Cali, ….to recollect at one time…), in Shallow Alto/Mountain View area, last I looked, they run/(ran) East West ….book store, and Book Buyers …(across the street from East West …(which used to be in Menlo Park, and Book Buyers, used to be on University Avenue, in Shallow [Palo] Alto.)), …both, are on Castro Street in Mountain View, ….. apparent contenders with the Scientology “church,” on Easy Street, Mountain View (just a short, snip snappety stub of a “throughway” to intrastates 85/101, off of Central Expressway, (which is in between, and paralell to, …highway 101, and El Camino Real) between Whisman (north of Mary) and Castro Streets. Anywho, …Ananda, bought a huge, previously Catholic ™ “church,” with a huge bas relief of William The Conquerer above its ‘front door,’ on El Camino Real, in Shallow, Palo Alto. ….jeeesh…I feel like a gossip columnist ……….., except that, outside of the spelling and “html” errors, it was firsthand experience, watching those entities preside at those addresses, and asking bleakly amused questions.

But seriously, I think they are all the practised “religions” ™ …and, the practised “non- religions” ™ …, ….of: …. I, …Me, …My, ….Mine, ….. ……………., which the Mic/Corp/Guv, makes such short, certainly $$$$$$$profitable$$$$$$$$$, ….. work of………………….

ts - 27 July 2011: Will agree with you there. Have been going to the local evangelical Taiwanese church, largely because the people are nice individually, daycare for our two kids and the free lunch. The sermons are all fire and brimstone – Old Testament type stuff, with a thinly veiled reference to our current times, a reading from Genesis, destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah(1), followed by a prayer to be free of the same decadence in “daily lives”, as if there are homosexuals running amok dragging people out of their homes to rape, like in the story. Kind of unnerving coming from people you talk to later and seem otherwise normal.

(I kind of chuckle at this passage, because if you read a chapter after that, Lot’s daughters, realizing their family line may die out as they’re living in a cave and their mom is saline, contrive a plan to get their dad blind drunk and get impregnated by him. They succeed And thats okay then.)

One of the ethical questions contained in the PowerPoint presented to missile officers asks: “Can you imagine a set of circumstances that would warrant a nuclear launch from the US, knowing that it would kill thousands of non-combatants?

Another question trainees are confronted with asks: “Can we train physically, emotionally and spiritually for a job we hope we never have to do?”

To help officers answer these ethical queries, the PowerPoint presentation cites numerous examples of characters from the New and Old Testament fighting “just” wars. For example, “Abraham organized an army to rescue Lot,” God motivated “judges (Samson, Deborah, Barak) to fight and deliver Israel from foreign oppressors,” and “David is a warrior who is also a ‘man after God’s own heart.'”

Also included in the PowerPoint presentation is a slide containing a passage from the Book of Revelation that attempts to explain how Jesus Christ, as the “mighty warrior,” believed war to be “just.”

It’s right there in the Sermon on the Mount, right after being your neighbors’ keeper.

This part is right, though:

It goes on to say that there are “many examples of believers [who] engaged in wars in Old Testament” in a “righteous way” and notes there is “no pacifistic sentiment in mainstream Jewish history.”

The Beatitudes ….…Matthew, Chapter Five … ( the beginning, of the The Sermon on the Mount, …one, partial translation follows, …which so very many, many poor people (even many, many middleclass, and even a surprising few “wealthy” people),…. took to heart, in whatever way they felt they were able to, and still “survive.”

White House reporters were left in the dark on Wednesday as they tried to find out what President Obama has been up to today.

As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner wrangle over their debt ceiling plans, Obama has been holed up inside the White House with no public appearances scheduled and nothing even listed on his daily agenda released to reporters.

Asked Wednesday afternoon what Obama’s been doing all day, press secretary Jay Carney whispered, “I can’t tell you.”

“He’s been in a lot of meetings. A lot of phone calls,” Carney said. “You know, beyond that, I don’t know what we have on the public schedule.”

A reporter followed up by asking if Obama might talk to reporters. “He could be out here in an hour,” Carney mused, but then quickly said that nothing’s scheduled.

Carney also refused to tell reporters when Obama last spoke with Boehner. “We’re not reading out individual conversations, so I’m not going to do that now,” he said. . . . .

Noooooooooooooooo transparency there!

[A] congressional report released yesterday reveals that top DOJ officials had knowledge of the sting, known as Operation Fast and Furious, in which U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) agents allowed more than 2,000 firearms to “walk” across the U.S. border to Mexico and into the hands of Mexico’s brutal drug cartels. As many as 1,700 of those weapons have since been lost. More than 100 have been linked to crimes on both sides of the border, including the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent last December.

U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), who are leading the congressional investigation into the operation, have made it clear that the attorney general — a confidant of President Barack Obama — is a central focus of their probe.

So far, the DOJ has stonewalled the Issa/Grassley probe. But recent testimony from the embattled ATF director made the astounding claim that the cartel leaders targeted by Fast and Furious were allegedly paid informants for the Drug Enforcement Administration and the FBI. …

Anytime they want to take down a long time third rate government functionary (that would be Holder) is fine with me…

In his secret July 4 testimony, Melson, accompanied by a private lawyer, told Congressional investigators that DOJ officials had told him to keep quiet, and asked him not to cooperate with the House probe. He added that the department seemed primarily concerned with protecting senior political appointees.
