well… this does seem to be an expansion of what we have been doing – and, what else, anothr incipient war effort…

Ganjafied Gabacho - 8 August 2011

Gotta get our Pinkertons involved:

For the first time, small groups of operatives and civilian military employees have been deployed to a Mexican military base (…) U.S. is also considering embedding private security contractorsinto a special Mexican counternarcotics unit.

The new operations have been devised to get around Mexican laws prohibiting foreign security forces from working inside the country and to prevent corrupt security agencies from getting their hands on advanced American military technology…

Estamos chingados…

Ganjafied Gabacho - 8 August 2011

There is no doubt that this chess move has nothing to do with preventing Cartels’ acquisitions of “advanced American military technology”
When Cartel bosses are part of Forbes top 10, when the ATF funnels arms INTO Mexico, when we actually train Mexican commandos in SERE training before they go back home to become the Zetas and teach everybody what they’ve learned, when CBO audits of corruption among Customs and BP are classified because it might spread panic amongst the ‘merikkans that worry about oncoming brown tide, claims that hiring Pinkertons will keep our toys from the “other side” (nod, nod, wink, wink, say no more, say no more) aren’t just laughable, they’re insulting…

BTW, At least in Sonora since AZ passed 1070 the long standing resentment of a smaller/weaker/brother towards his bullying elder/stronger brother has simmered into something less tepid. I have no doubt the introduction of MORE armed Gabachos (even if they are pochos) will enrage los paisanos mas que el pinche Maximilian…

2. marisacat - 8 August 2011

well there it is… living under threat from a ridiculous organisation:

Standard & Poor’s says there is a one-in-three chance it will lower America’s credit rating further over the course of the next two years.

BooHooHooMan - 8 August 2011

It’s come out that In Italy, this past Wednesday and Thursday.Berluconi just made the cops bust in and raid the offices of Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s in Milan. 😆

The measure is aimed at “verifying whether these agencies respect regulations as they carry out their work,” 😆 Carlo Maria Capistro, who heads the prosecutors’ office in the southern town of Trani which is leading the probe, told Reuters.

The documents were seized at the Milan offices of the two agencies on Wednesday, he said, adding that prosecutors had also asked Italian market regulator Consob to provide documents relating to their registration in Italy.

UPDATE 4-Tel Aviv stocks fall 7 pct on US debt downgrade

* Tel Aviv blue-chip index down 7 pct after delayed opening
😉 {We’ll come back to THAT. – bhhm}

* Market fears another global recession

* Circuit breakers used for first time since 2008

By Tova Cohen

TEL AVIV, Aug 7 (Reuters) – Tel Aviv shares closed nearly 7 percent lower on Sunday in the first response of a developed market 😆 to Standard & Poor’s downgrade of the United States’ credit rating that has sparked fears of another global recession.

The TA-25 .TA25 blue-chip index closed down 6.99 percent to 1,074.27 points

and is down 18 percent since the start of the year. The broader TA-100 .TA100 slid 7.2 percent.

Gather ’round friends, and APPRECIATE the delicious front-running, peek-a-boo IRONY here-

The Tel Aviv market opening was delayed by nearly an hour as circuit breakers kicked in when shares fell more than 5 percent in pre-market trade.

The last time circuit breakers were used was on Sept. 21, 2008, after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, a stock exchange spokeswoman said.

Heeheeheehe. STOP! HALT!

Can you IMAGINE the PANIC at derivatives deasks right about now?

The market is also concerned about the exposure of Israeli banks to U.S. debt. Herzog said Bank Leumi (LUMI.TA) and Israel Discount Bank (DSCT.TA), the country’s largest and third-largest banks, respectively, were most heavily exposed among Israeli banks in terms of their proprietary portfolios.

Shares in Leumi ended down 8.4 percent to 13.49 shekels while Discount Bank lost 10 percent to 5.44 shekels.

So, with stock markets selling off in response to the news, what about the actual asset that S&P downgraded, U.S. T-Bills? How are those doing in today’s trading? They’re going up.

I think I jsut heard the news update say the Dow closed down 632… somewhere around 11 thousand 800 something.

Hey nosedive. Think it qualifies, fully.

marisacat - 8 August 2011

yeah guess so… it took a fast dive as it had pulled up to around 360 not long before close.

I just read last night Uncle Buffett owns a lot of Moody’s …. WH must not have given him a fast enough pass on whatever he wanted for the long slobbery kiss of how we will always be Triple A, Sooper Dooper Plus Plus Plus in his book in Omaha.

who knows.

BooHooHooMan - 8 August 2011

I like the squeeze dynamic. Love it.
Skimmers most dependent on being inside the US loop , fearing the US Treasuries gig is up (Bad S&P! Sacrilege!) (FOOLS) move in for the rescue by shooting every equity holder in sight. A little slow on the draw, tho, as China had made substantiall moves out of equities earlier. Bummer. Oh they took their licks over the last few but not the kind of off-the-cliif, burst-into-flames thing we enjoy here. And now they benefit from the Treasury shoring while proceeding to do what they’ve been doing, and have said so, up front: that is, limiting their exposure, methodically decreasing their holdings of Uncle’s skank with respect to their GNP.

marisacat - 8 August 2011

Time fr a ”no faith” vote in Slobby. Maybe Snob can go seeking hand raked beaches again… dress the children in the national flag of some African nation….

Ignore state polls — presidential elections are national
By Jonathan Bernstein

Do I want to get into extolling the virtues of political polling? No.
Does the unscientific nature of believing that Orgadmo The Penis King has sent that massive flow of lava down the exploding volcanic hillside which will ignite your entire village before entombing it , you,, you, and you there despite your piss soaked loincloths — render its conclusions unreliable?

marisacat - 8 August 2011

wow.. how very weird. Orgadno the penis king?

I don’t automatically buy into polling… but some things can, some times, be plucked out from the tabbing, or whatever the “back pages” are called.

But hey! GOOD LUCK ignoring state polls …. 😆 🙄 Let’s go with that right now, it would mean Obby wins FER SHURE!, if we ignore state polling: MIchigan… 😆 Ohio. 😆 PENNSYLVANIA 🙄 Nevada, no sweat. CO no sweat. and so on.

8. marisacat - 8 August 2011

From reading the comments, it’s a police car, and the “ticket” is a “police aware” notice that a tow was called to haul the burnt out shell away.

Okay, I lied about the research…so sue me!

NarcoNews has a great article about No Mas Sangre movement in Mexico to end the drug war.

Warning: Its a bit longish but here’s a tease from it that seems relevant to the ongoing discusion about economic melt down that might draw you in:

James Petras alleges that “every major bank in the United States has served as an active financial partner of the murderous drug cartels—including Bank of America, Citibank, and JP Morgan, as well as overseas banks operating out of New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and London.” To give only one example, in May of this year, The Guardian printed an article citing US Department of Justice records to the effect that Wachovia Bank alone (now owned by Wells Fargo) laundered $378 billion dollars of drug money between 2004 and 2007. Court cases involving these allegations are usually settled for miniscule fractions of the bank’s quarterly profits.(GG notes: Wells Fargo’s minicsule fine)

Where does the global economy begin and where does the drug trade end? Dare we wonder if the global economy can survive without drugs? An answer to this question became unavoidable in the US financial crisis at the end of 2008. In January of 2009, Antonio Maria Costa, the head of the United Nation’s Office on Drugs and Crime, was quoted by Reuters: “In many instances, drug money [was]… currently the only liquid investment capital… In the second half of 2008, liquidity was the banking system’s main problem, and hence, liquid capital became an important factor… interbank loans were funded by money that originated from the drug trade and other illegal activities… [there were] signs that some banks were rescued in that way.”

It is essentially a come-on from a gold hawker, but there were some really fun parts:

The players in the USCongress, along with the leader himself, were exposed as pusillanimous, deceptive, polarized, destructive, wayfaring fools. They are as much fully equipped squires for both the banking industry and the military establishment. (…) They have given the system license to debase the USDollar further…The President is so clueless as to believe patent reform can make a difference. The bigger obstacles are poor education, minimal math & science requirements…Of course the debilitation is compounded by the US lacking a strong industrial base. So better patent protection would mean the US corporations could more effectively protect their offshore jobs, where the majority of jobs are located.

(…)the tombstone on the US Republic will feature a Super Committee to recommend the most difficult of budget decisions. Such fanfare without proper label. The committee is a formalization of the Politburo process, a perverse interwoven political stranglehold fabric that takes the worst of the Weimar Republic and melds with the worst of the Fascist Business Model. (…) Look in the near future for a wave of office shutdowns. The USGovt (…) will act with negligence and shut down offices. See the Federal Aviation Agency, which must contend with 70,000 job cuts. It has lost its funding, while the USCongress went on its August vacation. An improvement would have come if the cut in budget came to the Transportation Security Admin (TSA) to alleviate the public from airport assaults that draws tears from old ladies, anger from defiant citizens, and consternation from most everybody. By the way, the planned date for the Super Committee to convene and make its recommendations is in the middle of the Presidential Primary season next summer. Expect a circus.

BTW Gold hit 1700 and ounce today and this guy wrote this before the weekend, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want to smoke a fatty with they guy.

U.S. Recovery Canceled Due To New, Neverending Economic Depression

Wh-wh-whut’s happening? Didn’t Obama and Boehner solve the “debt crisis” or whatever made-up horse poop they invented to avoid talking about the tens of millions of unemployed workers and the stagnant/declining wages for those still hanging onto jobs and the other symptoms of our long national recovery?

So, after the S&P genius division “downgraded” America’s ability to repay its massive debts — because of the Republicans and their enabler, Barack Obama, committing national suicide for the hell of it — Osama bin Laden came back from his watery grave to kill the Navy SEALs who killed him, and then America’s official holy land (Israel) also got downgraded (to semi-holy land) and then the weekend finally ended and Institutional Investors/Hedge Fund Managers/Voldemort said, “Eh, let’s cash out and take the rest of the world down with us … although we won’t really be down so much as slightly less crazy rich.”

I’ll see your pair of wonkette’s and raise you a Peoples’ Cube

…S&P is a racist, racist organization in league with Teabaggin’ racist in some unholy alliance to discredit, besmirch, and pull down the first African-American president of these United States of America!

Do you want to know what S&P stands for? S&P stands for Standard and Poor’s which means being poor is their standard! How can you trust a credit rating agency that wants making people poor — and keeping them poor, to boot! — as their standard!? You can’t, my friends. You can’t trust what S&P has to say!

You want to know what else? Well of course you want to know, I’m an expert! Stop shaking your head and walking away — you want to hear what I have to say! I heard that S&P use to stand for Slaves and Profits. That’s right — S&P was all about slavery, profits, and pouring acid on the faces of children, the elderly, and single mothers too! Where did I hear such a thing, you ask? YOU DIDN’T ASK, THAT’S WHAT!

Don’t make me pull out my commemorative Obama White House blackjack, bub! I would hate to do this the Chicago way!

… blame the Tea Party for our reckless spending and aversion to compromise; and we have to keep blaming George W. Bush for the mess our president inherited.….

Call it double inverse irony with a grain o Truth™, or as my ‘ol grand pappy used to say, “Even a broken clock is right at least twice a day”

14. BooHooHooMan - 8 August 2011

Did you see where Michael Moore suggested (6+ / 0-)
progressives nominate Matt Damon to primary Obama? If you think about it, it’s not a bad idea. Young voters have become so disillusioned with the political process (after Obama screwed them around), he might generate some excitement, he’s poised and likeable…they might be willing to consider him: and he’s already active in progressive politics because of his mother…

anyway, it’s an intriguing thought.

IIRC MD is up to his Hollywood nose in Bono and ONE campaign.

Some great stuff on the riots:

Months of conjecture will follow these riots. Already, the internet is teeming with racist vitriol and wild speculation. The truth is that very few people know why this is happening. They don’t know, because they were not watching these communities. (…)Most of the people who will be writing, speaking and pontificating about the disorder this weekend have absolutely no idea what it is like to grow up in a community where there are no jobs, no space to live or move, and the police are on the streets stopping-and-searching you as you come home from school. The people who do will be waking up this week in the sure and certain knowledge that after decades of being ignored and marginalised and harassed by the police, after months of seeing any conceivable hope of a better future confiscated, they are finally on the news. In one NBC report, a young man in Tottenham was asked if rioting really achieved anything:

“Yes,” said the young man. “You wouldn’t be talking to me now if we didn’t riot, would you?”

“Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you.”

and this is “spot on”:

Riots are about power, and they are about catharsis. They are not about poor parenting, or youth services being cut, or any of the other snap explanations that media pundits have been trotting out: structural inequalities, as a friend of mine remarked today, are not solved by a few pool tables. People riot because it makes them feel powerful, even if only for a night. People riot because they have spent their whole lives being told that they are good for nothing, and they realise that together they can do anything – literally, anything at all. People to whom respect has never been shown riot because they feel they have little reason to show respect themselves, and it spreads like fire on a warm summer night. And now people have lost their homes, and the country is tearing itself apart.

Is it sick to think that we won’t have any real Change™ until this kind of violent rupture of the fraudulent social contract erupts on this side of the pond?

marisacat - 9 August 2011

IOZ had a post yesterday, that he had a conversation with a young white liberal he knows… who lamented the lack of protest in the US (which is not to say it has ever died out, it has not) and IOZ said, well when it does happen and it does, YOU don’t like it, retreat behind gated communities and lament the looting. Because it is most likely poor blacks (and others) rioting protesting demonstrating against a specific injustice.

Yeah, that would be where it is at.

We have had continuing incidents in the Bay Area, followed by unrest, near riot, in some cases I felt ”worse rioting” roiled actively by city hall or police or some authoritarian entity, but the clucking and under the breath criticism, close to saying this that or the other that WOULD B racist, no question.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 9 August 2011

….You don’t like it

Yeah, I was at a small scale (<500 people) riot at a Jerry Garcia show at the Warfield on Market Street shortly after the KIng Riots. Blacks vs. Hippies. Not fun. I managed to save a woman and myself from a beating by dropping my pants. High as Fucking Kite I had no idea what I was doing but I still remember the dude's eyes turn from mindless hate and rage to overwhelming fear and he ran away, maybe he thought he'd catch the gay?

19. diane - 9 August 2011

who is IOZ, … priceless:

Honeypie You’re Not Safe Here

So you have an entire so-called economy based on theft and expropriation; basically your life must be either precarious true poverty or the illusory security of some or other sort of debt-peonage, which is the foundational theft and expropriation upon which all the profits of finance rest; literally, like, uh, basically, um, half the world is enslaved to the immense extortionist enterprises of state capital–the other half is covered in a three-inch Congo-delta oil slick and is a skein of extraction points. And what really worries you is that some London homebro is stealing some trainers from the Foot Locker? Oh, you worry, how can these people ever expect social change and the advancement of their lot if they don’t respect the law. Yo, mah nigs: how can they ever expect it if they do?

(bolding mine)

Ganjafied Gabacho - 9 August 2011

gotta love IOZ.

The implied subtext that poor people’s incorrigibility is society’s biggest problem, and that somehow they are at fault despite all the “hand outs” of our “charity/taxpayer money” (e.g. mortgage default, inner city violence, hunger in Africa etc.) is whispered among the genteel and screamed about by the boorish in the middleclass Donkeycrat and Rethuglican alike iand itself is a circus around a circus within a circus (heh!)

And I would go so far as to say that is by design…not that Duggan was shot to create this distraction from Murdoch crumbling ( although who really knows?), but rather ghettoes and the strife that concentrate poverty/disenfranchized peoples are created as a free-fire zones to distract whatever “middleclass” is allowed to exist by the Owners…
