laugh laugh laugh… Matt Stoller in Salon

[O]bama has ruined the Democratic Party. The 2010 wipeout was an electoral catastrophe so bad you’d have to go back to 1894 to find comparable losses. From 2008 to 2010, according to Gallup, the fastest growing demographic party label was former Democrat. Obama took over the party in 2008 with 36 percent of Americans considering themselves Democrats. Within just two years, that number had dropped to 31 percent, which tied a 22-year low. . . . .

BooHooHooMan - 6 September 2011

since 1894…
Matt …. a Hahvad man too, you know: Carved PEAS?

Stoller….With impressive, extensively cited, white liberalsh thesis – adding up now to yer basic Who let the Nig in the Party?

marisacat - 6 September 2011

I haven’t read him in years.. so I have no idea of where he stood (hmm, well… I use the word advisedly, 😆 ) back in 2008

ts - 6 September 2011

I think he overlooked how bad 1938 was for the Dems.

marisacat - 6 September 2011

I noticed the blurb at the end says he is with the Roosevelt Inst…. 😆 maybe they have rule about how you talk about ’38…..

ts - 6 September 2011

Oh, I love the last graf:

Political parties need to be flexible enough to allow for new ideas to come into the process, or else third parties or civil disorder are inevitable. All it would take to provide this flexibility are well-known Democratic elders who understand that rank and file Democrats deserve a choice, and a few political insiders who realize that they can increase their own power by encouraging a robust debate. I don’t think this will happen. But just imagine if it did.

Imagine there’s no money. It’s easy if you’re delusional…

marisacat - 6 September 2011

So much of what that crew, blahggers of the first decade, write is sludge. SMBIVA is laughing at Yglesias (a really hilarious piece, too)…. and IOZ is laughing at a fill-in for Sully.

It’s endless………………………………………….

👿 … 😯 … 🙄

BooHooHooMan - 6 September 2011

or else third parties or civil disorder are inevitable –

😆 Then you’d have your cats livin with dogs, 😯 dogs livin with cats! 😯 who knows WHAT ills will come out of, you know, third parties and all….

Such nicompoopish laughingstock LOL….

Our daily fare… but not necessarily on the printed menu. Apparently 2 of the dead were National Guard – in uniform. So…. and of course a chain restaurant (IHOP) shooting does demand a headline.

Otherwise, there must be so many multiple GSW killings in any given week……………

4. marisacat - 6 September 2011

oh ”clueless” and ”hateful” come to mind when I think of Janet Nap….

[W]ith the Transportation Security Administration’s screening of children and the elderly generating high-profile complaints, Napolitano warned that any hard-and-fast rules exempting some types of travelers would open a major gap in security.

“We can’t adopt blanket exclusions because the exclusion is exploited by those who seek to do evil,” she said at the POLITICO event. [oh but there IS an exclusion, an official one … for the Sikh turban – Religionists are just so fwagile ~Mcat]

Napolitano said federal security agencies are being vigilant as the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaches, but there’s no reliable intelligence about a planned attack.

“Many, many things have already been put in place not because there’s a specific, credible threat but we want Sunday to be a day of commemoration and remembrances and we want it to be safe,” the secretary said. “Not just DHS—a lot of other agencies in the federal government state and local gvoernments are really leaning forward to make sure we’re as safe and secure and we can be.”

She added, “We don’t have specific or credible information that an attack is pending, that’s not to say it isn’t…There’s no specific or credible threat. That’s the term of art. It’s also a possibility that we will have a lone actor a lone wolf decide, ‘This is a great day to get some attention. I’m going to do something’.” . . . . .

Maybe she and the rest of the Obama thugs can just go house to house and strangle us all…. THEN we’d b really safe!!!!!!

ts - 6 September 2011

I’d really prefer it if they strangled each other.

marisacat - 6 September 2011

oh me too. Pay per View.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 7 September 2011

In Romania during the “revolution”, they just marched Ceacescu onto national TV, declared him a traitor to the country and shot him in the head. No charge. Free for all.

We should emulate them…or adopt the traveling guillotine and make it a picnic family type event…”this is what happens to tyrants, mijito”

marisacat - 7 September 2011

Yeah I did love it… no shyness about showing the dead bodies of him and the wif on TV either…. and they sure created a countrywide horror show…

Oh I am SO INTO the travelling Guillotine… Of course I want my own!!

Ganjafied Gabacho - 7 September 2011

wrt countrywide horror show, my buddy, from the video link, was in the Romanianarmy at the time and the song is about him and the rest of the young conscripts (mandatory draft, to fight off the capitalist pigs) refused to fire per their orders…anyhoo he says that Ceacescu kept russian troops out of the country (something unique in eastern europe commie block countries) because he set up a “snitch on your neighbor” police state that the Kremlin actually admired for its pervasive paranoia…btw he says the only troops that supported ceacescu at the end were orphans he raised to be his bodygaurds.

wrt traveling guillotines, I’m requesting a slow motion model, so the bastards suffer…

I know I am going to an eye exam for new glasses tomorrow (I am…), but all I see is shadow, where I guess I should be seeing the Hercules of all apparati.

But also, I never heard of that book… totally fascinating. God knows what they all get up to on their own. Certainly Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut was trying to tell us. Not just metaphor…

diane - 7 September 2011

I wonder who (or which country’s populace) had just been hideously tormented, then slaughtered, to have brought that one on….

or had he just huntin out that limo window, wit fully loaded rifle, wit frendz …and the sun in his eye.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 7 September 2011

Here’s a Link to part four of an interview with the victim by Jeff Wells of Rigorous Intuition. The links to the other three parts can be found there. BTW Jeff uses a photo from Eyes Wide Shut at post head (no pun intended-heh!)

I think the metaphor, if not the reality is wide spread (and prolly mostly true); My favorite fictional portrayal of this club of sadists is found in Leslie Marmon Silko’s Almanac of the Dead where ultra rich blue blooded bad guys are sexual predators altho the agonists in this story are more homosexual in their targets

Texas Lawmakers Notice Wildfires, Slash Funding To Firefighters

Some teabagger Republicans in the Texas legislature noticed on Newsmax or whatever that Texas is currently on fire, the whole state. And then they heard something about firefighters apparently trying to fight these catastrophic fires, which is communistic, so the Texas Forest Service will have its current low budget slashed by another third — $34 million — to teach everybody a lesson about “relying on socialist fire departments when JESUS wants your shitty tract house to burn down.”

Ganjafied Gabacho - 7 September 2011

We don’t need no stinkin’ bomberos, in Tejas…

brinn - 7 September 2011

That Reuters article that Wonkette links to is from May….so I’m pretty fucking sure that budget ship has already sailed (and who is to say they didn’t cut more than a third — our stupidass lege probably figgered that we don’t got so much forrest here, so why they hell do they need money? (damnit, I miss Molly Ivins)

….too bad “no one” could have predicted the summer we’d have (and are still having). Yeah, that was heavy sarcasm..

And it sure as hell explains why Bastrop county is calling in tankers and firefighters from as far away as South Dakota.

“Managed Decline”, my ass, we are heading straight to hell in a supersonic handbasket.

After Years of Abuse, Obama Now Woos Democratic Base

After Years of Abuse, Obama Now Woos Democratic Base

Tue, 09/06/2011 – 19:59 — Glen Ford

Having humiliated and marginalized the core constituencies of the Democratic Party in his first term, Barack Obama calls upon these same groups to give him four more years. For most, it would be difficult to even find the words to refuse. The president’s essential conservatism, masquerading as consensus-building and bipartisanship, has helped move “the parameters of the national political conversation to a narrow spectrum, that goes from Obama, the corporate, center-right Democrat, to the Tea Party, the corporate-financed white nationalists.” Left Democrats are wholly adrift.

(bolding mine)

diane - 7 September 2011

Good Luck! Buona Fortuna! Bonne Chance!

[T]he White House can no longer take comfort in comparing the approval ratings for Mr. Obama with Ronald Reagan’s or Bill Clinton’s in the months after their stinging midterm election defeats.

By the time their re-election efforts were intensifying after Labor Day, their respective repositioning had helped elevate their approval above 50 percent. . . . .

On my new moderation duties
by kos

Alternative title: “Introducing the Great Purge of 2011”.

So as everyone has long gathered, I have deep patience for dickishness. I don’t mind a bit of rough and tumble. Politics is a contact sport, and passion and commitment to one’s causes and positions can lead to bruising debate. And let’s be honest, if we decided to ban all dicks, half the site — me included — would be gone. Heck, look at the national scene — the dicks are winning all the big battles (including 2010).

So being a dick is sometimes okay, within reason, which is why I’ve never concerned myself with it. But of course, the year-long Obama-rox/Obama-sux flamewar has now dragged me into community moderation, and my patience has run dry. I’m now itching the ban the fuck out of the biggest dicks on the site.

I’m already at about a dozen, with ratings pulled from several more. I’m not done. If you accuse someone of being racist just because they criticize Obama? Zap! If you actually say something that is even borderline racist? Zap! If you advocate for third party? Zap! This is a Democratic site. Advocating primaries is okay. Advocating third party is not. If I see ratings pack behavior or messed up uprates or hides, I won’t zap, but I’ll pull ratings abilities. Hell, depending on my mood at that moment, I may zap anyway. My dev team is putting together cool reports that identify patterns, so my job will get easier, and I won’t be shy in exercising them.

I can’t begin to care who started what. And in fact, if two sides are engaged in battle, I’ll act the same way I parent — both sides will get punished. So those are some guidelines, but they are not all inclusive. A lot of my actions will be arbitrary, inconsistent, and sometimes might even seem capricious. I don’t care. Some of you want a big set of rules printed and bound, so everyone is clear on the boundaries. Not me. I’ll define “bannable dickishness” the way you define pornography or irony — you know it when you see it.

You dragged me into this thing kicking and screaming, you get me at my very worst.

If you are one of those worst offenders — and I know you know who you are — then your best bet now is to lay low and hope I haven’t already noticed you (or banned you, for that matter). Or you can leave and go be obnoxious on someone else’s site. That works too. Because right now, I have an itchy trigger finger. I’m actually enjoying cleaning things up.

But, to show that I’m not all evil, I have already reinstated several people who had been banned a while ago. I’m always willing to give people a second chance. And if you get caught up in this purge, you can always ask for reinstatement. But I wouldn’t ask right now. Now’s not a good time for that…

marisacat - 7 September 2011

marisacat - 7 September 2011

Not a pretty picture this reinstatement business. Does it involve kneelng w/ mouth open?

Well, some serious issues for the little fellah Markos….
when scolded by the more mature kiddies whether at home or in his clubhouse as seen here

A bit too arbitrary (1+ / 0-)

for my liking.

With these “rules” it will be very easy for you to kick out people you simply don´t like.

In response?? Peter Pan doth protest too strongly!
AND reveals the nature of his site’s readership.

I’ve always had that ability (15+ / 0-)

and yet I didn’t exercise it because I wanted to treat the community like adults. And most DID act like adults!

But then, a bunch of them decided they wanted to act like dicks, and I was dragged into this, so yeah, I’m getting rid of people I don’t like — the dicks who can’t act like adults.

Believe it or not, the list is surprisingly small — a couple dozen,

on a site

with tens of thousands of commenters.

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times tho not briefly, If you’re a weatherman, ANY kind of weatherman, let alone one who might turn up on television, if you’re going into a hot-tub with another man to engage in the kind of steamy, late-night, horse-nostrilled coke-snorting debauchery involving a comrade in a dog collar, please use the kind of dual-purpose yet appealing neck rings now marketed with AIRBAGS for just such occasions. Preferably outfitted with the optional plastic doggy head-funnel which will amplify your distressed companion’s cries for help or more. The occasional inconvenience of the airbag exploding before you do is a small price to pay where safety is concerned.

FBI is executing search warrants at the Solyndra HQ, th one that got the huge half billion loan guarantee under a Dept of Energy stumble Bill thing…

[A]gents began the search around 7:30 a.m. PT and were seen interviewing employees and moving in the parking lot of Solyndra’s offices, the San Jose Mercury News reported today. The ongoing search is part of a joint operation between the FBI and Department of Energy’s Office of Inspector General, an FBI representative said.

Solyndra last week abruptly shut down its solar panel manufacturing operation in Fremont and laid off more than 1,000 workers. On Tuesday, it declared bankruptcy and is now seeking to sell its assets. . . . . .

BooHooHooMan - 8 September 2011

I call dibs on “Solargate”…

Hmm..
“no fewer than 20 visits” to the White House in setting up the deal..

.According to White House visitor logs, between March 12, 2009, and April 14, 2011, Solyndra officials and investors made no fewer than 20 trips to the West Wing. In the week before the administration awarded Solyndra with the first-ever alternative energy loan guarantee on March 20, four separate visits were logged.

George Kaiser, who has in the past been labeled a major Solyndra investor as well as a Obama donor, made three visits to the White House on March 12, 2009, and one on March 13. Kaiser has denied any direct involvement in the Solyndra deal 😆 and through a statement from his foundation 😆 said he “did not participate in any discussions with the U.S. government regarding the loan.” 😆

But the countless meetings at the White House seem hardly coincidental. Kaiser, in fact, is responsible for 16 of the 20 meetings that showed up on the White House logs.

In the meetings on March 12, Kaiser met with former Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors Austan Goolsbee at 11 a.m., Senior Advisor Pete Rouse at 3 p.m., and Deputy Director of the Domestic Policy Council Heather Higginbottom at 6:30 p.m. On the 13th, Kaiser met with Deputy Director of the National Economic Council Jason Furman at 9 a.m.

This should be good As we move into the sweaty lipped press flack and surrogates phase, ~ Barry can’t come out now! ` with the ole What the Prefseldent DIDN’T know and When he didn’t know it…

marisacat - 8 September 2011

Revolving door…

I sort of think that the executing of warrants is a defensive move from the WH and DOE….. They have to do something to try to show they are moving against Solyndra. Apparenlty they broke state and Fed laws in the no notice lay off… Solyndra says no… they did not break any laws, as they were actively looking for funding.

Ah… I wonder if that flies..

Patient Data Posted Online in Major Breach of Privacy

KEVIN SACK
Published: Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 2:07 p.m.

A medical privacy breach at Stanford University’s hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., led to the public posting of medical records for 20,000 emergency room patients, including names and diagnosis codes, on a commercial Web site for nearly a year, the hospital has confirmed.

[A mom….], of Santa Clara, Calif., said her “jaw dropped” on Saturday when she intercepted the letter from [a doctor?] addressed to her 21-year-old son, who she said received emergency psychiatric treatment at Stanford in 2009. [The mom….] said it could have been disastrous if her son, who lives at home, had learned that his name was linked online to a diagnosis for psychosis.

“My son, I can tell you, is fragile and confused enough that this would have sent him over the edge,” [The mom….] said. “Everyone with an electronic medical record is at risk, and that means everyone.”

(I’ve redacted the names, I was surprised she allowed anyone to print them, I hope she was asked about it.)

But earlier in a very blithe way the local radio I listen to said that their “listener’s club” had been hacked… and emails were going out to … I guess the club list (I don’t join things like taht… so not me) and someone was sending out emails as tho from show hosts.

Maybe you just “join” by giving up your email… but usually almost anyone collecting info, wants as much as they can get. Not close to hacking medical records and diagnoses… but really, nothing is safe….

diane - 8 September 2011

I hope the eye visit went well honey.

Yeah nothing is safe, in some cases, no matter what a person does or doesn’t do to keep their data safe. When fully enforced on The Cloud ™, as Obama plans it (and as his evil twin george had initially planned it), corporations, among others with ill intent, will be fully tracking potential hires med histories, and no doubt, any errors in the records will be impossible to correct.

I get really angry when I think of how many people didn’t and still don’t stop to consider just how destructive the planned full blown Cloud Computing will be in terms of: privacy violations; destroyed reputations due to false data; the destruction of millions upon millions of jobs; and so much more.

Stunning that in all the blawg talk about unemployment, there are crickets when it comes to millions being replaced by bots, it’s even worse than the silence on the thousands and thousands of work visas still being provided, which is a far, far larger threat to liveable wages for citizens, than anyone illegally crossing the border.

Solyndra via Wapo

[I]n a statement last week, Kaiser’s family foundation said Kaiser used no political influence to obtain the loan and held no conversations with government officials about Solyndra’s application for funding. [yeah right! – Mcat]

A House investigation is looking at possible White House involvement in Solyndra winning the loan, and said it has found evidence that White House officials were monitoring Solyndra’s status in the application process. The Department of Energy has asserted that it chose Solyndra through a competitive, non-political process.

A Government Accountability Office audit last year found Solyndra was among a handful of companies that the agency awarded billions in loan guarantees before completing required reviews of their applications. . . .

YUM

Hundreds of angry longshoremen stormed through a grain shipping terminal in Longview, Wash., early Thursday and held security guards at bay while descending on a disputed train full of grain, cutting brake lines and dumping cargo.

The predawn labor protests came after a clash with police Wednesday in which hundreds of longshoremen blocked railroad tracks near Vancouver, Wash., to prevent grain cargo from reaching an export terminal 45 miles farther west. In that protest, they far outnumbered officers, pelting police with rocks and spraying them with pepper spray, police said.

There have been no serious injuries, but 19 protesters were arrested on charges of trespassing during the initial protests Wednesday.

Police were not present during Thursday’s predawn action at the terminal, but they said six security guards were held inside a guard shack while protesters attacked the train, broke windows in the shack and pushed a private security vehicle into a ditch.

“Yesterday there were probably 300 or 400 of them. Today there was even more, and we were just outnumbered,” Longview Police Chief Jim Duscha said in an interview.

“At this point, we hear there are longshoremen coming down from the Seattle-Tacoma area to assist. When the longshoremen were leaving, they were saying they would be back, this was not over,” he said. . . . . . .
