There’s film that shows after a small number, looks to be about 8, turned back to the help the injured vet, that police tossed a tear gas canister into the little crowd… I think I saw 2…. in fact.

4. marisacat - 26 October 2011

10:40 pm

media says 200 are on the march in Oakland.. but really t me it looks bigger…

Th authorities across he country are, you just know, FREAKING OUT.

Cops are ringing 880, a freeway, I guess in fear they plan to walk to SF.. or soemthing.

Looks like three blocks worth of people marching. More than 200 but not sure how many.

marisacat - 26 October 2011

one report says “over a thousand” marching in Oakland.

I think it is a gentle display of force, myself.

Madman in the Marketplace - 27 October 2011

they’ve plainly just pushed people too far …

marisacat - 27 October 2011

I think it got up to 2000. And I really think it was a gentle show of force from the Occupiers…

BooHooHooMan - 26 October 2011

The authorities across he country are, you just know, FREAKING OUT. -mcat
eeeeeyyYEP. 😉

a BFM.

They SO fucked up with the beatdowns.
Fucking stupid on so many levels, politically, tactically…
fuck, in this economy? Utter disconnect as to its consequences, but fact that Banksters pullled those so strings so quickly in the first place shows IMO shows just how precarious they perceive their position to be..Now before anyone goes all “no news there” , that’s not what I’m saying; we’re talking about timing, and how the PTB have had the luxury all these years. really since, the 60’s of playing the co-option for peanuts, the lip-service and waiting game. IMO.

Another delicious irony is how the meant-to-be brain scrambling media has , after all these absurd “War IS Peace” years, they’ve created the very level of numbing detachment necessary to tune out their propaganda.

Look I’m a slow as hell ex-Democrat, but sooner or later, ya just have to go all OMG- It’s ALL BULLSHIT!!!
What was I ThINKING???!? 😉

marisacat - 27 October 2011

i am so enjoying it… and the freak out.. whcih I get to hear reverberate via the operatives at KGO radio. The 10 to 1 am guy, lousy partisan humper…. is deriding people for abandoning the electoral process, for abandoning Sloboma… no less!… for OMG! CHAOS!! It’s chaos out there! ANARCHY too!!

😆 .. 🙄

White House challenges McClatchy story, but provides no facts to counter it

McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — The White House on Wednesday said a McClatchy news story was false when it reported that President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were not deeply involved in talks with Iraqi officials over whether to leave a residual force of U.S. troops in the country before deciding to withdraw all U.S. troops by the end of this year.

The White House refused, however, to release details of Obama’s and Biden’s involvement that would counter the details in the story.

McClatchy on Tuesday reported that “President Barack Obama and his point man on Iraq, Vice President Joe Biden, remained largely aloof from the process” of negotiating whether U.S. troops could or would remain in Iraq past the end of this year.

The story quoted logs provided by the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad showing that no talks between the president and vice president and Iraqi officials from March through October.

The logs recorded the White House statements, or “readouts,” of calls made by the president or vice president.

The story also quoted a spokesman for the government of Iraq. And it noted that, in addition to the embassy’s log records, Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki’s office had put out a statement on Sept. 22 saying that Maliki and Biden had discussed that day a possible residual U.S. force.

“That report is just categorically false to suggest that the president and the vice president hadn’t been in communication with Iraqi leaders,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday afternoon when asked by reporters about the story.

“The vice president had many, many conversations with Iraqi leaders over the time period mentioned in that story. The president spoke with Prime Minister Maliki this summer,” Carney said aboard Air Force One as the president flew home to Washington from a West Coast trip.

Asked if he would release the dates or details of those talks, Carney said, “I don’t know.”

He also said that “there actually was” a White House comment of one of the calls to Iraq that was missed. “But the fact of the matter is … we don’t read out every call we have, the president has or the vice president has with foreign leaders.”

“We stand by our reporting,” said James Asher, Washington Bureau chief for McClatchy. “We have repeatedly asked White House officials for details on Mr. Obama’s and Mr. Biden’s communications with the Iraqi government. So far, they have declined to provide them. We await a response.”

hmm I don’t get Curretn TV but I gather Olberman called for Jean Quan (mayor of Oakland) to step down.

😆

diane - 27 October 2011

no defense whatsoever of mizzy quan here, but it’ll be a high speshul day when that prick Olberman calls for himself to step down ….along with all his BiPartisan Deformed Dick Suckers.

marisacat - 27 October 2011

Well I think Quan was not a thief… one thing the Democrats will always be against, non-thiefdom. But as I said over and over, my hope for her was never thicker than a dime… and actually thinner. LOL Perata is not the answer, tho Est Dems have trotted him out. He’d have to move out of ORINDA to run again… if he even bothererd. Thieves and criminals always welcome.

So… they have a wide range of alll colors of step n fetchits to choose from over there if she is recalled…

diane - 27 October 2011

Well, I know little about her, except to say that if she had any part of the “AYE,”in the ghastly decision made, for pre ‘sun rise,’ Tuesday ‘morning,’ ….fuck her.

But yeah, if she’s not a thief, the BiPartisan Powers that be will make every effort possible to see to it She Gets Fucked, …Every Which Way, …Then …UNDER…..

marisacat - 27 October 2011

The Est Dems have been lned up against her. They HATE ranked choice voting, the Est Dems loved Don Perata… who as I say, has done everything short of murder – and who knows! – that you go to jail for and strangely is not in jail!!

I think she was taken down sometime ago… this is just the public unravelment… and as I said, many hacks and step n fetchits to step in.

People don’t realise how the cops run everything in the Bay Area… We are SO LIBERAL you know.

Occupy College

Today the average college grad leaves school with just over $24,000 in debt, an amount that eats up $276 every month if you stretch the payments out over ten years and it’s a government loan with a 6.8 percent interest rate. Of course, one out of five students also carries more costly private loans, where interest rates are in the double digits and fees add to the balance. This debt-for-diploma system is what counts as opportunity in America today. And it is animating much of the frustration and passion of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The debt-for-diploma system is just one of the many ways it has gotten harder for this generation to either work or educate their way into the middle class. A handmade sign at Zuccotti Park summed it up perfectly: “I went broke trying to become middle class.” Far too many of today’s twentysomethings are earning less than their parents did at the same age—a downward slide that was true even before the Great Recession left a jobless generation in its wake. Today, young men earn 90 cents for every dollar their fathers earned in 1980. Young women make more, about $1.16 for every dollar their mothers brought home in 1980—gains driven by better job prospects, more college degrees and longer working hours. But those overall trends mask a big divergence between the college haves and the college have-nots. Over the course of a generation, only young people with bachelor’s degrees have seen substantial increases in their earnings—cold comfort to the legions of twentysomethings struggling to pay back their student loans while working in jobs that don’t require a degree, or with no job at all.

snip

There are plenty of good ideas for getting our nation back on track. And the best of them would squarely address the economic plight facing young people today. Right now, the government can borrow at negative real interest rates because investors are storming for Treasury bonds. Many people are calling for us to use this window of opportunity to invest in our crumbling infrastructure, but what about our stagnating human infrastructure? How can the government justify charging students nearly 7 percent while it charges the banks nothing and can itself borrow for less than nothing? Short of returning to a grant-based college aid system that restores the purchasing power of Pell grants, we should immediately reduce the federal student loan interest rate to a level lower than what the Fed offers banks through the discount window (currently less than 1 percent). It would provide immediate relief and send a strong signal that we the people are finally treating our children better than we treat banks.

ms_xeno - 27 October 2011

Yup. And Obama’s Hope Brigade has such fucking gall. They tell us used-up “old folks” that we should just go back to school because that would magically solve all our fucking employment problems.

Assholes.

marisacat - 27 October 2011

Clinton said the same thing… “expect to have 7 careers in your working life”… I almost swallowed my teeth the day I heard that.

They are in such a big opaque bubble.

I like to spread it around that Mama Obammamamam let her membership in the BAR … ANY BAR, lapse in less than 5 years of getting her JD and passing the BAR exams (I assume she took the Illinois exams)…. which means she, the lauded Legumier and Vacationer! did not complete any of the mandatory CEB, Continuing Education of the BAR which you have to do to stay current….

ms_xeno - 27 October 2011

Yeah. I’ve got no quarrel with the students. We all know they’re being fucked, too.

Just tired of Billy and Hopey and the rest of these finger-wagging assholes, in bed with the banks and with the other oligarchs that keep our shitty wages in the dirt– when we can succeed in drawing a wage at all. They babble at us like we’re not-very-bright infants. Always waving some shiny bauble at us that they have no intention of ever putting in our hands. >:

I’m old enough to remember when a company would actually TRAIN you to do a fucking job. No more. You’d better be a fresh-faced grad well-versed in who knows how much soon-to-be-archaic techno-shit. Or you can forget about them even turning their heads to spit on you. >:

Washington Post Illustrates Oakland Police Brutality With Cop Petting Kitty

Faced with endless photographic documentation of the insane violence of 500 riot cops against a group of protesters in Oakland, the Washington Post editors proved they are good Kaplan 1% corporate lackeys and choose this picture of … a riot cop petting a kitten. Not just any kitten, though. According to the Washington Post, the shameful excuse for a newspaper in the nation’s capital, it’s a kitten that was cruelly left there by the evil protesters. Hooray for the cops! Protesters hate kittens.

Euro debt crisis envelops US finance house

NEW YORK, Oct 27 AFP
October 28 2011, 07:21AM

The future of US brokerage firm MF Global was in doubt Thursday after a bad $US6 billion ($A5.79 billion) bet on the debt of struggling European governments forced the firm to look for emergency capital or even a buyer.

The derivatives broker — which holds approximately $US41 billion ($A39.54 billion) in assets and is led by Wall Street star 😆 Jon Corzine — was downgraded by Fitch to junk status, 😆
sending its stocks down 16 per cent.

That added to a 54 per cent plunge from the beginning of the week,

after Corzine, the former Goldman Sachs chief, admitted to big losses out of huge bets on the sovereign bonds of Portugal, Italy and other struggling eurozone economies.

I think this is a much bigger story than is presently known.
Who knows the ripple effect that comes with this,
but witness the hubris on display –
This is a “known known” — > his firm and the firms that are his major shareholders are chock-full of ex-Goldman darlings who assumed the EU would all but pay them in Full 😳

I think the current assessment of market contrarians holds true,
that these upswings are driven by a scramble to cover CDS contacts as the derivative triggering events come due……

Pretty clear the pressure applied

marisacat - 27 October 2011

, amazingly, CORZINE’s still visible, yep –

Sigh. There is SUCH a pressing need for the travelling Guillotines. But, none available on the open market, apparently all sent t LIBYA.

marisacat - 27 October 2011

BTW, I’ve not heard of Jean Quan showing up at Occupy Oakland… at least not yet…

Ganjafied Gabacho - 27 October 2011

From the wonders of Quans “status” facecrack’s page:

Darnell Bates
She said she would speak at the General Assembly tonight yet has not and the word is that she did not want to wait in the queue. Her twitter account read:”I was told I could speak at the speak out but that was cancelled. Hoping to speak at the general assembly tonight
51 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone” Nothing was cancelled and the GA is till going on and she is no where to be seen and stand accounted for her actions.

The comments are fun; somebody even suggested “off with her head”. I’ve got my fingers crossed for the guillotines to win…

marisacat - 27 October 2011

It always sounded tentative iin the news out here.. I would have been surprised if she showed.

I just left a long comment over at SMBIVA on Quan…. but it has not appeared yet in the thread (a second one showed up, but it was just a short addition to the first…. a third has not appeared… gah)… if it does will link to it here.

marisacat - 27 October 2011

I don’t think it will post at SMBIVA (long history of my comments being eaten alive over there) so here it is, fwiw:

Believe me, I have no desire to defend Jean Quan… but Perata is a major league asshole, criminal and one who lives by the standard operation manual for Dem thieves. The joke is that he is well named, “Don” Perata.

Establishment Dems out here luved Perata (who now lives in a traditional prosperous East Bay ‘burb, Orinda, LOL) … and hate with a passion ranked choice voting… by which Quan won. She understood how it operated and her GOTV trained people in the basics… along with others who ran in the same election. They made agreements to talk up being each other’s 2 or 3 choice.

Perate assumed he would win and did not bother.

Whoops.

Because she dared win against a beloved and thru a voting system the party hates they have been gunning for her from day one. (This is not an endorsement, retroactive or other, nor am I excusing her her collapse).

The hard truth of Oakland and in fact many East Bay communities, the cops, police sheriff and others, run the joint. They have my entire life and it has just intensified over recent years….

She has tussled wtih the police over community policing, gang injunctions, youth curfew (of course the Est. Dems and the cops want it all, want it now and want the nightsticks on parade, as if the cops really do anything about crime against humans, they don’t)

Oakland PD has been under Federal watch for over 10 years from scandals and law suits dating back to 2000. Most recent word from the Federal bench in September, the Feds may take over OPD. Hey, I say good!:

streamline the communciation because what is happening IMO with Occupy sites is coming from the top: Twins Obby and Holder.

I know this is all very boring… and I am not weeping for JQ and I had but the slimmest of slim hopes that what I perceive to be a non-thief and one who did not fall in with the police hook line and sinker might survive.

My guess is she fell sometime ago, in summer, the entrenched cop corruption that runs Oakland won and this is the public unravelling.

And so on.

Now I will cross my fingers and hope this posts…

Ganjafied Gabacho - 27 October 2011

what is happening IMO with Occupy sites is coming from the top: Twins Obby and Holder.

Bingo!!!!! (oh. wait…everybody already has that number)

I don't know Quan, but she's pretty daft for a teacher. Still playing the authoritarian schoolmarm:

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, after saying she would attend a meeting with Occupy Oakland supporters, failed to show up and instead issued a statement Thursday night laying out “ground rules” for peaceful demonstrations.

Quan said demonstrators needed to have direct communication with city officials, maintain healthy and safe conditions at protest sites, allow rescue personnel to enter areas if problems arise and not camp overnight on public property.

On Thursday night, a number of tents had sprouted up at the City Hall plaza area as protesters began reconstructing their encampment, which was shut down early Tuesday by police.

LAT

marisacat - 27 October 2011

I think I am being misunderstood. It does not matter what she says, where she goes or how she does anything.

It’s the windown. It’s over for her. And frankly it is over for Oakland. It really is, in a major way. Next the cops go for the Green mayor over in Richmond. Just a matter of time. EVERYBODY else imo over in the East Bay (and in SF) is tied in. Is a thief, is a full participant in the Dem playbook. Same in the South Bay.

We are now in the public shaming part of the take down.

Please I am not weeping for her, I am watching the extended take down. Which is what is happening. I like it, in terms of observing, when this much of a political play is on view.

And it will be interesting to watch the Occupies… and what moves are made next.

19. marisacat - 27 October 2011

I nicked this from IOZ:

In Atlanta, Mayor Kasim Reed ordered the police to arrest more than 50 protesters early Wednesday and remove their tents from a downtown park after deciding that the situation had become unsafe, despite originally issuing executive orders to let them camp there overnight.

And like many of his mayoral colleagues nationwide, Mr. Reed openly expressed frustration with the protesters’ methods.

“The attitude I have seen here is not consistent with any civil rights protests I have seen in Atlanta,” Mr. Reed said in an interview, “and certainly not consistent with the most respected forms of civil disobedience.”

Thanks so much Kasim.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 27 October 2011

😆 not consistent with the most RESPECTED forms of civil disobedience

you know the kind of civil DISOBEDIENCE where you RESPECT the cops authority and keep prostrate as the step on your neck. You know be RESPECTFUL and kowtow in public and keep your protest in the internet ghetto…

Madman in the Marketplace - 27 October 2011

Someone needs to send the mayor a letter:

I have consistently preached that nonviolence demands that the means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek. So I have tried to make it clear that it is wrong to use immoral means to attain moral ends. But now I must affirm that it is just as wrong, or even more so, to use moral means to preserve immoral ends. (p278)

marisacat - 27 October 2011

I think he will continue to read the Dem playbook.

Back when he ran I was not impressed with him. Gravy trainer.

20. marisacat - 27 October 2011

oh god. gear up. Michael Moore arrives to Oakland Occupy tomorrow.

Can’t he bring Sharpster, Kanye West, Cornel, Danny Glover and whoever else, get it all over with at once.

marisacat - 27 October 2011

oh and Russell Simmons. Bring him too… Rosario Dawson too if she is advancing her Dem party cred.

And so on.

One thing that amuses, Lady Gagagagagagagagag (who I never minded til it was clear she was grafting on to the Dems) is keeping what I bet is a Dem advised distance from Occupado.

We are so fucking deep in the tank.
