Mario Savio Memorial Lecture on Tuesday in Berkeley Will Be Moved to Sproul Plaza

The Mario Savio Memorial Lecture and Young Activist Award Board of Directors and Robert Reich, the scheduled lecture speaker, have been asked by the Occupy Cal General Assembly to transfer the event to the Mario Savio Steps in Sproul Plaza at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, instead of holding it inside Pauley Ballroom. This is in protest against the use of excessive police force against non-
violent demonstrators who were peacefully exercising their First Amendment rights to free speech in a symbolic encampment. Although we recognize that this change of venue may pose a physical hardship for some of the attendees, it was unanimously agreed that we would be violating our mission statement (see below) to reject the request. Depending on the exact circumstances at the time, a somewhat shortened presentation of the Young Activist Award will be held, and the award winners will speak.

The following efforts are being made to ensure people’s comfort and safety as far as possible.

1 – The students are planning to erect a few tents on the grass in front of one side of Sproul Hall at 6 p.m. Based on past experience, they believe the police will either seize the tents pretty
immediately or wait until late at night. In other words, a confrontation is very unlikely to occur during the period of the lecture, especially with a large number of people in the Plaza.

2 – Professor Reich is likely to start speaking at 8:40, not earlier. This will be preceded by the Young Activist Award speakers.

3 – the students intend to set up an area with chairs for those in need. If you can sit low down and still get up, please bring a cushion or a low beach chair. All of the rest of the audience will also be asked to sit on the ground so as not to block the view..

3- Dress warmly. Rain is not expected. The temperature is likely to be in the low 50s.

4 – There will be amplification.

Please do not attend if you feel the circumstances would be too difficult for you. We also want you to be aware that it is possible (though the students feel it is unlikely), that if the tents are taken down earlier, the
atmosphere might remain too charged and too chaotic for the lecture to be held.

If you contributed to the Lecture fund in order to secure seats in the reserved section, you may choose between having your donation refunded or letting us keep it and receiving a CD of the lecture, if one can be made.

We apologize for your inconvenience and disappointment, but, as Mario Savio said: There comes a time…

Occupy Wall Street and the 99% Movement Persevere

The feeling here at Liberty Square tonight is the feeling of a movement that is rising, building, and making headway.

Following the 1am eviction of Liberty Square early this morning and a long day of legal wrangling, the park was reoccupied late this afternoon. This evening, just after 7pm, the first General Assembly at the reoccupied park began. Using our ‘people’s mic’, we declared together:

“They showed us their power. And we’re showing them ours.”

We are here because we believe a better world is possible. We are willing to endure mistreatment, if by doing so we can help re-enfranchise the 99% and reclaim our democracy from the stranglehold of Wall Street and the top one percent.

We will push back against billionaire Michael Bloomberg and any politician who wantonly tramples on proud American freedoms: freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and the freedom of Americans to peaceably assemble and petition for change.

We will overcome the obstacles placed before us. We will not be deterred. We will persevere. Our message is resonating across America, and our cause is shared by millions around the world. We are the 99%, and we want to live in a world that is for all of us — not just for those who have amassed great wealth and power.

You cannot evict an idea whose time has come.

NYPD Occupying Liberty Square; Demands Unclear

New York, NY — The NYPD have been occupying Liberty Square since 1:00am Tuesday morning, with the brand new occupation now set to enter its second day in just a few short hours. But will anyone listen to them when their message is so incoherent?

“What are their demands?” asked social historian Patrick Bruner. “They have not articulated any platform. How do they expect to be taken seriously?”

Critics of the new occupation allege that meddling billionaire Michael Bloomberg is behind the movement. Others question the new occupiers’ militant posture, concerned about the potential effects on the neighborhood.

“I suppose they have a right to express themselves,” said local resident Han Shan. “But I’d prefer it if instead they occupied the space with the power of their arguments.”

Anyways he is known enough around mostly for LOL inserting himself along with a few others into the livestreaming but especially for MSM interview begging- it is so awful to watch a young man at a protest over by the satellite vans preening, puckering and fussing over his mascara. so (just go with it! play hard to get! maybe it will work out!) …Anyways – LOL – this kid in the link was waxing on about “all our veterans this” and “all our veterans that” and “when they go overseas to fight for us” this and “fight for us” that…- let’s put it this way of his performance – he didn’t quite occupy the Shamar Thomas role there in broad daylight there at Columbia despite the whole “all our vets” vet hero-worship slobber – ya know, Christ, I’ll speak for myself – if out of High School I knew they were handing out complimentary blowjobs I guess I could have just asked for one or tried to play football for the college money – ANYWAYS the 30-ish guy was also on cam this morning, waxing on about how – “Let’s face it , folks – We’re on to Phase 2 now: How we translate this into effective political change-o presto – dumbo yaknow derp derp derp”…

NTIM after all the Dem downers over the years, there is at least as much awareness now about these drags and the
need to be all like Wha’evah! – Good Luck! as there is with the cops and their minders…..

The next move of the PTB tho is to fill the park with every assistant manager of one sort or other they can find…but I think the beauty of that is, like the classic Striving White Boy/ Bowers mold they all seem to be stamped out of…. they’re looking to move on quickly to the next soft landing.

And Well prepared,- well prepared they are!

Online chat has 450 people in the queue and an estimated wait time of 248 minutes. NO info on the company website. I may have a new internet/cable/phone provider by the end of the week.

marisacat - 15 November 2011: Almost anyone knows more about internet/cable/phone than I do, not sure what area you are in, but in my area, Xfinity is running ads constantly, a big introductory deal that i think is available for about 4 or 5 more days. (I think Xfinity is Comcast?)

Just FYI if you are looking around.

I am trying to pay a little more attention to what is on offer, as I sat down and added up two land lines, Netzero dial-up AND Netflix… and while I cannot make a decision before the end of the Xfinity offer, I am going to see if I cannot find a bundled service with DSL+cable+phone that I could afford.

With the GE coming, I want to go back to having cable, aside from everything else.

Opponents of Gov. Scott Walker marched past his Wauwatosa home Tuesday night to cap a day of activity launching the recall effort against the governor, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and four Republican senators.

The atmosphere of the march, which drew more than 1,000 protesters as well as Walker supporters, echoed the tenor of protests at the Capitol this year. Organizers said some Walker neighbors welcomed marchers and allowed their driveways to be used to sign recall petitions. Protesters carried signs such as one that read “Occupy Walker’s Street” in all capital letters.

The recall group United Wisconsin started Tuesday with a 12:01 a.m. electronic filing, then hours later marched through downtown Madison to make the paper filing with state elections officials. The Madison march was led by two possible Walker opponents if a recall election is triggered – former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk and Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin President Mahlon Mitchell.

Walker hit back with a fresh ad campaign that started Monday and an announcement by the governor and Sen. Van Wanggaard of Racine on Tuesday in Racine that a plant expansion would add hundreds of manufacturing jobs there. He said his administration would stay focused on “jobs and reform.”

The governor also said in a telephone interview later that the protest at his private home was out of line. He said it showed disregard for his neighbors, wife and teenage sons.

“It’s one thing to protest at the Capitol or even at the executive residence,” Walker said. “It’s another thing when you go into other people’s neighborhoods.”

A spokesman for the group We Are Milwaukee, which helped organize the local rally, said Walker and conservative talk radio hosts’ criticism of the march through the neighborhood was misplaced and overblown.

“We thought it was appropriate in Walker’s neighborhood because he’s divided his neighborhood the same way he’s divided the state,” said Ted Kraig. “A lot of his neighbors feel we can’t take three more years of him.”

People were signing recall petitions at a table set up in Cale Ziemer’s driveway. His N. 68th St. home is a few houses from Walker’s.

and dusting off this Seattle retrospective from 2002..

….. several recent anarchist mobilizations have been hijacked by a shrill minority that wishes to impose permits, routes, parade marshals (e.g. peace police), zones of actions and other such nonsense, turning our rage and creativity into a well-ordered media spectacle, or worse, mass arrest. The constant and insincere calls for “solidarity” and protecting others have turned our once raucous resistance into an exercise of well-organized crowd control.

But it hasn’t always been like this…

Just a few years ago the military’s pet think-tank RAND organization wrote:

“Anarchists [in Seattle 1999] using extremely good modern communications, including live Internet feeds, were able to execute simultaneous actions by means of pulsing and swarming tactics coordinated by networked and leaderless “affinity groups.” Rather it became an example of the challenges that hierarchical organizations face when confronting networked adversaries with faster reaction cycles. This loosely organized coalition, embracing network organization and tactics, frustrated police efforts to gain the situational awareness needed to combat the seemingly chaotic Seattle disturbances.”

And, Not to mention, not to rub in that last – oh what the hell why not? 😉 BUT They face much greater numbers now….
AND there is so much more they can look forward to..

RAND concludes that there is little that hierarchical organizations like the police can do to deal with such chaotic tactics. In addition, they sound the alarm that our types of groups facilitate rapid evolution of tactics and promote greater recruiting opportunities than traditional demonstrations. They are afraid and they had right to be: we were winning. Fortunately, today, we still can win.

We gain nothing returning to the tactics of ten years ago: the scripted, bland and boring traditional leftist demonstrations of parade routes, leaders, speakers and marshals. What we need is creative, decentralized and, most of all, chaotic action.

One tactic used in Seattle and elsewhere that utilizes chaos is “pulsing”. Pulsing is the ability of groups of people to come together, disperse to safety and reform in new groups. While this is similar to guerrilla tactic of “absorption,” there is an important difference.

Che’s notion of “absorption” is simply when a “force attacks the enemy for a period of time and then breaks off the attack being absorbed into the community or environment” from where it came. Pulsing is a constant flow of people joining, breaking up and rejoining, often in new combinations of groups. The most successful way this can be done is through small decentralized autonomous groups (e.g. affinity groups) that have the decision-making power to decide for themselves when and with whom to interact with.

RAND points out that pulsing makes crowd control very difficult because it keeps “rearranging the threats” and that there is no prearranged pattern that police can analyze and neutralized. This unpredictability is the cornerstone of chaos theory.

“Swarming” is another way we can inject chaos into our actions. Swarming is the tactic of hitting a number of targets at the same time without following a pre-set pattern. Decentralized swarming frustrates law enforcement’s ability to protect targets and disrupt our activities. They are forced into “reaction” as opposed to their goal of “controlling the agenda for protests”. Again, the only way for this to work with thousands of people is for us to organize in a radically decentralized manner. Decentralizing work and actions by the channels of affinity allows the skills and passions of small groups to be utilized best, so that the groups select actions that match their interests and abilities.

In demonstrations, hierarchical organizations are quickly overwhelmed when their central nervous system is confronted by the chaos caused by unpredictable, pulsing swarms. Anarchists can take advantage of these matrices of opportunity opened up by autonomous groups, giving us a huge advantage over slow reacting, hierarchical groups like the police.

Both pulsing and swarming inject the crucial element of chaos into our demonstrations. Police are repulsed by chaos, as are all hierarchical organizations, and thus are slower to react. These tactics provide affinity groups opportunities that they could have never planned for: like liberating unguarded dumpsters next to a checkpoint that can be turned into a battering ram or finding an unlocked service entrance into a hotel where IMF delegates are staying.

So. Obviously, Bloomie didn’t get the whole RAND memo deal.

Some observers said Tuesday that the New York Police Department would be faced with new challenges if the protesters were no longer contained for the most part to Zuccotti Park.

“There’s no question that as a logistical issue, it’s going to be easier to police this as one event in an area that is barricaded versus a moving event,” said Eugene O’Donnell, a professor of law and police studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

“The idea of having spin-off groups with no leadership and no end game is something that they’re not experienced in dealing with,” he added.

Protesters have aired plans to occupy subway stations and to march on the Brooklyn Bridge on Thursday, and several people in contact with the movement say organizers expect them to be their biggest events yet.

Christopher Dunn, executive legal associate of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said a truce has been in place between police and protesters over the last few weeks, easing tensions that arose after a pepper-spraying incident in September. Also sparking outrage was a threat by city officials last month to clear the park, but they reversed course.

“Since then,” Mr. Dunn said, “the police had not really been a big issue with the Zuccotti Park protesters. But now they are the issue.”

NEW YORK—Saying the recently arrested protesters had just the right kind of tenacity and pluck needed to shake up the financial services industry, magnanimous and benevolent Morgan Stanley banker Hank Billings approached members of the Occupy Wall Street movement Tuesday morning and hired each and every one of them on the spot. “This is exactly the kind of self-starting, ‘won’t go home till the job’s done’ kind of attitude I like to see,” said the gracious Billings, claiming that he had grown to admire “the cut of [the activists’] jib” since the movement began in mid-September and that “moxie such as [theirs]” should not go unrewarded. “You all were out there every day, giving it everything you had, and by God if you ever took no for an answer. Sure, you all took some digs at me, but who needs a bunch of yes-men standing around, anyway?” Billings then reportedly smiled, shook each protester’s hand, and said he would see them all in the office “bright and early Monday morning,” noting that a personal history of lawbreaking had never hindered anyone’s career on Wall Street.

ts - 16 November 2011: That was one of my crazy overcaffeinated business ideas. Start a bank, hire all the laid off tellers, loan officers, etc. Rent space in a recently shuttered bank branch. Purchase foreclosed homes or short sales and rent them back to their original owners negative equity free as a lease purchase option. Raise deposits from those who want to flee the greedy, profit-driven banking system. Plow all profits back as bonuses to non-management employees, bonus interest on deposits, and principal reductions on outstanding loans. Open a second branch, etc. Welcome to the First National Bank of the Occupation.

In campaign filings released by Vereb, documents show Robert Poole, the chairman of The Second Mile, held a fundraiser for Leslie Duchtot on Oct. 9, 2007 as she was running for office.

At the time, Sandusky was still with the charity as its founder.

The fundraiser netted $1,463 and was held at Poole’s house in State College, Pa.

The movement began as a protest of major economic and political issues, but lately the most divisive issue has become the protests themselves. The Occupy Wall Street encampments that formed across the country to spotlight crimes committed on Wall Street have become rife with problems of their own. There are sanitation hazards and drug overdoses, even occasional deaths and sexual assaults.

On Tuesday, New York and other cities across the country continued the chaotic, disruptive process of picking sides. Police made arrests in at least six states; three civil rights groups filed lawsuits on behalf of protesters. Mayors and city officials from coast to coast held emergency meetings and tried to decide:

Is the most far-reaching protest movement in the past decade solving problems or creating them?

Is this an occupation or an infestation?

marisacat - 16 November 2011: Our mayor “visited” SF Occupy over the weekend and supposedly came away sickened by the fillth… the latest slam is that the dogs are sick and have fleas.

Turns out he stood outside on the sidewalk and did not even LOOK in much less GO in. He is the worst sort of small case Democratic hack mayor. Used to be City Manager… little putz out of Chinatown. Months ago I heard him call what was going on in WI, meaning the protests, as “weird” nd that we would be having “none of that weirdness here”… so you know he is freaked out. I say feed him a Chinatown duck or chicken. Let him worry about that. It took ages (practically my entire lifetime) to stop live animal sales on the sidewalks in Chinatown and some streets (esp Stockton St) on some blocks ran with animal refuse and worse. The case against the alleged killers of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry has disappeared from federal court records, apparently sealed by a federal judge.

In May, federal prosecutors won an indictment against Manuel Osorio-Arellanes and others, and they announced it with a press release. Only Osorio-Arellanes’ name was visible in the indictment, but there were blacked-out words where other defendants’ names go.

Osorio-Arellanes was charged with second-degree murder and was not considered the likely shooter. He had been wounded during the gunfight that left Terry dead.

But in the ensuing months, the case disappeared from court records.

Why? Nobody is saying.

Supposedly the Fed’s kept the murdered agent’s parents out of his house for a week after the killing…I wonder if Agent Terry was related to Walter White…

An ‘Occupy’ shooter?

If confirmed, this will likely be a much, much bigger image problem than the reports of crime in “Occupy” encampments:

Authorities suspect Ortega-Hernandez had been in the area for weeks, coming back and forth to the Washington Mall. Before the shooting, he was detained by local police at an abandoned house. U.S. Park police say Ortega may have spent time with Occupy D.C. protesters.

The mirror-image campaigns to tar the Tea Party and the “Occupy” movement are based, in no small part, on guilt by association. But nobody anywhere near the Tea Party ever took a shot at the White House.

Geesh the Tea Party was basically the Mickey Mouse Club Mousequeteers for Koch and other frontline hardliners. BFD

I see all the ”amenables” as I called them, rank and filers of the pundit class who stuck with low level non incendiary rhetoric, are, over the last two weeks, joining the fiercely anti Occupationists.

The circling is nearing completion.

They are too white, anti semitic, leaderlss, they have dogs, they have homeless, they have rats.. on and on it goes.

Believe me NOBODY, no one in charge in Oakland, cares that a 22 year old black, in fact a resident f Oakland, man witht he first name of Kayode was shot and killed last week a few feet from Occupy.. but because of Occupy Oakland it became a big deal. (and btw, I have heard of no family claiming him, which is odd)

shot” at that malarial swamp that lords over, and devastates …. innocent lives …, as regards those things in life that really matter, in the stained house.

SF Occupy has marched to the big BofA HQ at California and Davis in the Financial District to protest BofA AND that a BOFA big wig sits on the Board fo Regents… (I think there is always at least one BofAer on that Board, for my entire life – along with Blum and Sherry Lansing and others, LOL) and they have gone into the Lobby. BofA has locked the main doors.

Makes me laugh, it really does.

they called it “the people’s regents.”

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is weeks away from launching an unmanned aerial asset to help deputies fight crime. The ShadowHawk helicopter is six-feet long, weighs fifty pounds and fits in the back of an SUV.

“We can put it over a fire, put it over ahazmat spill, put it over a house with a suspect barricaded inside and literally give the incident commander the ability to look at the entire scene with a bird’s eye view, ” Chief Deputy Randy McDaniel said.

Sheriff’s deputies will fly the ShadowHawk with nothing more than a laptop computer and a remote control similar to that used for video games.

It’s equipped with an infrared camera that can clearly read a license plate from an elevation of twelve hundred feet. The helicopter cost upwards of $300,000 and was purchased with a grant from the federal government.

Vanguard Defense Industries built the helicopter. The company has also supplied aerial assets to US forces over seas.
