To be fair, you can’t say one CAUSED the other, as this headline implies: Rural Suicides Follow Medicaid Cuts, but one might guess that the cuts might have contributed to the trend.

Kathie Garrett, co-chairman of the Idaho Council on Suicide Prevention, says the problem has gotten only worse since the recession. “The poor economy and unemployment—those put a lot of stress on people’s lives,” she explains. To save money, people skip doctor visits and cut back on taking prescribed medications. Cuts in Medicaid have reduced the services available to the mentally ill.

“I personally know people who lost Medicaid who’ve attempted suicide,” says Garrett.

Reductions in funding have led to the closing of mental health offices, she says. Such closings mean more in Idaho than they would, say, in Manhattan, where a therapist can be found on every block. Before the cuts and closings, somebody in Idaho seeking therapy might have had to drive 160 miles to find it.

Kim Kane, executive director of Idaho’s Suicide Prevention Action Network in Idaho says other factors explain the high rate of suicide in western mountain states. One is the greater prevalence of guns: In 2010, 63 percent of Idaho suicides involved a firearm, compared with the national average of 50 percent.

Of course, getting rid of the guns is out of the question.

marisacat - 6 December 2011

Far too much stress out and about.

People, many, can’t survive it.

But i think that is the plan.

marisacat - 6 December 2011

thanks for that… I know Texas can be a hard ass on all types of welfare, Medicaid and so on.. but Cali is going the same route, if slower… I think in the 70s and 80s our systems, of state and Federal help and even local assistance, were good to very good, but since the early 90s it has been spiralling downward… I think that was one of Arnold’s jobs.

And I don’t see anythign changing under our Zener-than-thou, Jesuit Rodeo Drive shopper (for real, decades ago he was on the monthly big spender list that is displayed, or was when I was in there in the 70s, at Bijan on Rodeo).

wu ming - 6 December 2011

the more i think about it, the recall in 2003 was just as serious an inflection point for CA as the 2000 SCOTUS coup in 2000 nationally. a lot of the crap with the privatization of the UC system really took off in 2003, spearheaded by none other than richard blum, in partnership with newly-elected gov schwarzeneggar.

marisacat - 6 December 2011

It was a total set up. Complete. And fucking bi partisan.

I feel sorry for anyone left alive who thinks the Democrats will pull anyone from the fire. And I think fewer and fewer do, even they pathetically still vote in desperation.

Judge Rules in Favor of Occupy Protesters, Suspends Trespassing Notices

Siding with Occupy Seattle protesters, today US District Judge Robert Bryan ruled to suspend “trespass warnings” issued by by Washington State Troopers to Occupy protesters—and others—for refusing to leave the Capitol Building after closing hours (.pdf). At this morning’s preliminary hearing in Tacoma, lawyers with Keller Rohrback successfully argued that the “warnings” were actually criminal trespass bans that violated protesters’ constitutional rights to free speech and freedom of assembly. Here’s a copy of their original class-action complaint (.pdf).

“The state patrol can’t issue any more of these trespass warnings—at least until January 5, which is the date of our next court date,” explains Benjamin Gould, an attorney with Keller Rohrback. “It also means that the trespass warnings that it’s already issued, it cannot enforce.”

The trespassing bans prevented protesters from returning to Capitol grounds or state parks in Olympia (including Heritage Park, where Occupy Olympia is situated and Sylvester Park, where protesters tend to congregate) from 30 days up to a year.

Seattle resident Mark Taylor-Canfield, an Occupy Seattle journalist who regularly contributes to Huffington Post and Daily Kos, is the lead plaintiff in the class action lawsuit handled by Gould and his associates, Gretchen Obrist and Harry Williams. Taylor-Canfield, was reporting on protesters occupying the Capitol rotunda on Nov. 28th when he was detained by state patrol officers and issued a 30-day ban.

“That they’re telling me that a journalist cannot go to the seat of our state government and report and observe on it is just ridiculous,” he says. “I can’t imagine what they were thinking. They’re effectively punishing protesters without booking them. You’re being punished with no charges, no arrest, no chance to see a judge or jury of your peers. It’s for expediency’s sake on their part but it violates the Constitution. It’s the same with tasers, too. It’s their way of avoiding due process.”

Joe Arpaio Fine With Sex-Crimes As Long As They’re Against Illegals

From the AP story:

In El Mirage alone, where Arpaio’s office was providing contract police services, officials discovered at least 32 reported child molestations — with victims as young as 2 — in which the sheriff’s office failed to follow through, even though suspects were known in all but six cases.

Many of the victims were children of undocumented immigrants, said a retired El Mirage police official who reviewed the files.

marisacat - 6 December 2011

At soem point thru Netfix I had some documentary on the history of the DEA and the War on Drugs. It was much better than I had expected it to be… and it was clear: Arpaio has been in on it from the get go. Obviously a major Federal insider/fixer/cop/enforcer/creep.

4. Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 December 2011

and it was clear: Arpaio has been in on it from the get go.

Yep, despite all the shit that piles around him, Sheriff Joe just keeps on abusing his power…I’m waiting for the day he gets his appointment with the guillotine, until then he exists because of his usefulness…I’m sure he’ll survive this 👿

marisacat - 6 December 2011

I was surprised how clear the doc was on his story line. No missing it.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 December 2011

anychance you remember the doc’s name? I’d love to check it out…FWIW I once knew a “border brother” (AZ prison gang) shot caller who claimed that he owned a gold plate tommy gun with joe’s name engraved on it, supposedly stolen (along with a few other “machine” guns) from a cop car in PHX..

marisacat - 6 December 2011

let me see if I can find it in my Netflix history… and I will look in Political Documentaries… one way or the other way I will find it.

Here it is. American Drug War: Last White Hope. 2007

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0990452/

At first I did nto think it was this one, but it is… I see I rented it in summer 2009… and I know I hve only rented one drug war doc thru Netfl. Link to Netflix page, in cas you have an acct

Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 December 2011

super. thanx a bazillion.

marisacat - 6 December 2011

As I recall it is not a huge overt expose… but it has all you need to know what he is, not so much NOW but the arc.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 December 2011

I’d really like to know how he and the ‘Fast and Furious’ gun running and the “blue lights” border recon group interesect, because I’ve got a nagging they all do…

marisacat - 6 December 2011

oh I am sure they do. I would think he has long ties to DOJ along with DEA and ICE and everyone else. It is 2 and half years ago.. but I remember thinking to myself he was placed on the border on purpose. Then given tons of media coverage. In fact I think I will add it to my queeueueue again…

I am hoping Holder gets the push … cannot rememeber what it was but think I saw another story go by today about what has been happening in the cross borde mess… and thinking, please if there is a god let it track to DOJ and Holder.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 December 2011

Well Issa’s claws are now grasping at the money laundering to (cough) ahem…uh “trace” the money routes back tsouth, but I fear that this “expansion”of the investigation is just about side-tracking the latest revelations of US complicity in the drug trade into oblivion, …I have a hard time believing Issa (or just about anyone else) is going to be allowed to mess up “PLANe Mexico” and the bloodbath they’re plotting so unless they can get Holder without upsetting that particularly overloaded applecart I don’t think Eric is going anywhere (esp. ’cause I’m thinking Oobster is gonna get “wedged” back in)

marisacat - 6 December 2011

yup barring some upset, I do think they wedge Slob back in (tho it is going to be a fearsome uphill battle – no one is happy, other than his corporate confreres). And really he should be in office for the 2013, 2014 roll out of the several unholy messes.

Poor Issa another dead end for him. 😆 He did think h e started the recall ball rolling for his own little self. Whoops.

Madman in the Marketplace - 6 December 2011

well, he obviously serves some bigger peoples’ general plans … and always there to be a sacrificial monster to sacrifice when most advantageous.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 6 December 2011

my sentiments exactly

Hey buddy, check this link out:

Half-Past Human

Also note that in universe, so far as has been repeated demonstrated, everything that is ever alive, including our personal inner reptiles, will die. Also note that TPTB hold out EXCEPTIONS to death in their religions “in order” to snare your inner reptilian mind into thinking that if you somehow *just* are able to ‘fear god enough’, or ‘love god enough’, or ‘slave for god enough’, then somehow your personal inner reptilian mind figures it can get a free pass. Of course, at the core of its fear structure, the inner reptile can smell its own demise, and that is what has it driving the poor afflicted human mercilessly over its limited lifespan in the never ending search for the ‘safe place’, or the ‘safe choice’ in providing for ultimate ‘safety’ of the inner reptile itself. Also note that the inner reptile is purely selfish and has had some of its more visible parts labeled as ‘ego’ by academic mind-pluckers. And, also note, that the act of trying to quantify mind is a reptilian response as it seeks ‘order’ such that simplicity and control may also exist. It basically figures that if it imposes order on all, then it can find ‘safety’, which probably at its most basic definition is ‘infinite me unchanging’.

Please note, that this last, like Occam’s razor, is a lizard shit view of manifesting universe. Universe is all about complexity, and complexity is change at its core, thus nothing is unchanging, and thus everything is finite, and since that is the case, ‘me’ becomes this real small thing indeed.

(etc)

Not that endorse that lunatic’s mad neo-Taoist world view, but do I enjoy it…

Madman in the Marketplace - 7 December 2011

Thanks!

Good Cop; Bad Cop

Congressman Raúl Grijalva (D, 7th district) called for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio (R) to step down Monday in the wake of a report detailing more than 400 botched sex-crime investigations on Arpaio’s watch.

“Mr. Arpaio might love headline-grabbing crackdowns and theatrical media appearances, but when it comes to the everyday work of keeping people safe, he seems to have lost interest some time ago,” Grijalva wrote in an statement online. “He should give the affected families a sense that justice is finally being done by taking the honorable route and resigning now.”

Arpaio fired back Tuesday while speaking to more than 100 people at a Republican Party event in Tucson.

“He should resign. Not me,” he said to the crowd, which erupted in applause. “I know who this guy is–he’s KGUN,” he said, pointing to the KGUN9 News crew behind the audience. “Maybe he’ll put in out there because I can’t get it out. I’m saying that this congressman has gone across the nation to boycott Arizona. They’re ruining our economy.” Arpaio referred to a nationwide call to boycott the Grand Canyon State after the passage of SB 1070, a controversial immigration enforcement law.

KGUN (ABC affiliate) NOOZE”

The all seem like stinking pigs to me…

marisacat - 7 December 2011

Is the boycott at all effective? Our Zener-than-thou was immediately there on a vaca following the early call for a boycott. He may have been there again recently, as he took vaca and the destination was a secret.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 7 December 2011

Boycott? What Boycott!? The only thing calling for a boycott did was make Grijalva’s re-election against a “tea partier” a really dicey proposition in a district populated by poor mexicans and considered a long time Democratic lock. And required Raul back track como un burro que ‘sta caseado in el cerco frontera …

The truth is that 1070 was more effective at eviscerating AZ economy more than any BS “librul” boycott, of course.
Rich Mexicans are not bothering with AZ and flying elsewhere to “shoP” but more as a way of avoiding hassles rather than a protest. The poor working mexis, all who at least lived have relatives with out “papers” bugged out of state due to fear (big bad Joe and his lesser known colleagues) and that destroyed the rental market. That of course further fucked up real estate, which was bloated on “nest egg” ritrement 2nd homes of out of state folks. You know middlers planning to retire in the sun and at least partially counting on rent to cover the mortage and now have at least one forsclousure. I can show you whole neighborhoods that are empty and aren’t comming back, nevermind the skeletal woodframe “developments” waiting for bored kids with matches…

marisacat - 7 December 2011

Sounds like a larger scale version of what happened in that PA town where the mayor decreed everyone coming to town to stay had to register at City Hall. Few years ago now…. All the wonderfull little Mexican shops dried up over just a few months, empty store fronts, empty apartments… and so on.

No question of wealthy S and C Americans shopping in a PA town, but other than that, ghosts.

The whole thing was a rather tired retread of his ‘One America’ speech to the DNC in 2004. The fact that anybody on the American Left could be remotely impressed with his rhetoric at this point is galling. I watched MSNBC last night trying to portray this speech as ‘populist’. Attempt Made On Deutsche Bank Head’s Life:
Explosive Package Addressed To CEO Intercepted,
ECB Return Address Given

It seems that popular anger at the banker minority will no longer be confined to tent-based vigils in public parks. In Germany, someone just escalated a bit to quite a bit. The irony, in this case, is that the package was addressed from the ECB. If it weren’t for a potentially sensitive topic, the amusing implications could be severe. From Reuters: “A suspected parcel bomb addressed to Deutsche Bank chief executive Josef Ackermann was intercepted at a Deutsche office in Frankfurt on Wednesday, a senior U.S. law enforcement official said. The package was discovered around 1 p.m. Frankfurt time (7 a.m. EST/1200 GMT) in a mailroom, the official said. Initial analyses by investigators confirmed that it contained explosives and extra shrapnel, he told Reuters. A spokesman for Deutsche Bank in New York declined to comment. After receiving reports about the package, the New York Police Department stepped up security around Deutsche Bank’s offices in New York and also notified corporate security executives around the city, the law enforcement official said. The official said the suspected bomb carried a return address from the European Central Bank, which is also headquartered in Frankfurt.”
