From a very beautiful gallery at Telegraph on winners of the European Wildlife Photog of 2011, with various categories. Many were stunning – esp sleeping whales, for one… others were too macabre or sad to use, tho amazing.

I stopped at this one and laughed, as for diversion tonight I watched James Ellroy’s documentary on murder, Feast of Death, mostly his mother’s murder and the Black Dahlia. We are deep in Los Angeles noir film land, of course… and police procedure, the classic policier film, novel and non-fiction.

Along the way he digresses and tells a tale on Jack Kennedy that he got from an LA PI, former cop, who bugged the Lawford party house on the beach, to get the goods on Jack and Marilyn for Hoffa.

Said Jack was “hung like a cashew”. Ellroy is quite good with ribald slang (I noticed some reviewers at Netflix really were turned off by that… I cannot imagine what they expected ).

Kept me diverted this evening anyway…

oh here is a tidbit of free-floating depression… the first of the debris from Fukushima has made landfall – up in Washington state. Something the size of a 55 gallon oil drum. Sigh… or maybe they said it IS a 55 gal oil drum.

More to come… as I see the Japanese in their infinite wisdom have declared the nuclear facility safe and no longer leaking.

Like hell it is not leaking.

2. BooHooHooMan - 16 December 2011

I see what posted last thread.
Pretty obvious what happened, tho.
God said the Iraq War couldn’t be declared Officially Over,
Unless Christopher Hitchens was declared Officially Dead.

😆

As good a story as any….

hmmm

[W]e have an atomic bomb that we can use in the face of the Germans and the French: this atomic bomb is simply that we won’t pay,” said Pedro Nuno Santos, vice-president of the Socialist Party in the parliament.

“Debt is our only weapon and we must use it to impose better conditions, because recession itself is what is stopping us complying with the (EU-IMF Troika) accord. We should make the legs of the German bankers tremble,” he said.

Evidently Nuno Santos would like to see all of the hobbled Southern European states band together to fight back against the German/French-imposed austerity regimes.

Europe’s future stability depends on keeping the likes of Nuno Santos (as well as the likes of Timo Soini in Finland) in check.

Hell no… I think the Nuno Santos and Soinis of Europe should hold tight to the bullwhip and haul off on the nutz in France and Germany.

seems to have worked for Iceland.

BooHooHooMan - 16 December 2011

I agree. Why should they pay?
Oh this is one very fine clusterfuck, the reality being ::
they can’t pay..

All of these Bonds , I mean FUCK their notional value, they were all skim vehicles for Banksters the Pols from jump.
Quite the prisoners dilemma.: No one can pay

Not even Kraut Frau, who I enjoy**
(Oh I’m a simple man! But I have my reasons! LOL)
Well, for ballcrushing Berlesco and Cameron and assorted rounder flounders like Corzine and cadre by not serving their calender. And it IS a hoot to see how she has trained that French Poodle Sarko too purr on cue and not pee himself in her German lap.

Bottom line tho: It’s all so craven, the purported Bigs trying to keep their neighbors on life support till they can get the Will signed. . FFS – The whole thing is built on paper!
GERMANY”S Commerzbank it’s #2, fittingly, is to be fully nationalized momentarily in rather selective, Berlin-centric funeral arrangements..

Anyways, IMO,..We we will see Scratch Claw Collapse x.0 – that’s what they all are – and I think within the next two months, very soon, point being sooner rather than later – that will make Lehman look like folding up a lemonade stand. Huge blocks of Sovereign CDS set to rollover on Dec 20th, soaring requests for year end redempptions from bottom to top of markets, the ensuing collateral calls that come with it….

Not lookin good..
So it’s either that or the old Force majeure standby.
To rescue Davey or something..

Yesterday, Fitch downgraded – Jeezis! – LOL
Damn near the whole CONCEPT of money.

Fucking MSNBC … the Russians made an arrest of someone trying to smuggle a radioactive isotope of sodium into Iran, Sodium-22. Chuck “Not a Reporter Really” Todd says something like ‘there’s no indication whether the material can be weaponized.”

What, no fucking INTERNET at MSNBC Chuck? I had to hit more than one link (mostly to PDFs of academic papers, so I’m not bothering to link … if you’re curious, I just googled “what is sodium 22 used for” … didn’t even need a fancy search), but near as I can tell it’s used as a radioactive tracer for PET scans, especially of the brain. Took two minutes. Checking through news stories up online, Reuters includes in their story:

Sodium-22 can be used for calibrating nuclear detectors and in medical equipment, nuclear experts said.

“There is no weapons aspect to this (material),” said Research director Lars-Erik De Geer of the Swedish Defense Research Institute.

Clown. Apparently his job is to ONLY help keep the clueless science-illiterate American citizen scared.

marisacat - 16 December 2011

Chuck Todd is the worst of the worst.

BooHooHooMan - 16 December 2011

Another aspect I saw floating around is how our “Official” stand down in Iraq…. facilitates – (barf bags now) – a “unilateral” “defending itself” Israel 🙄 to flyover Iraqi airspace to drag us all into World War lll.

Hell the last time the Golden Calf worshipers were about to take a huge hit while having account settlement disputes we got Nineleven . I put nothing past our Overlords.

Bradley Manning coming to “trial” today, codified Fascism ratified at every turn, the NDAA being the latest in hideocracy.,..
Who knows what these bastards have in store? I’m hearing the most disparate mixed signals about New York @ Canal Street tomorrow, that Bloomberg and his NYPD “Army” will be worse than ever or that they plan to actually leave people be unless things move uptown…

I’m sure Cockburn will have something to say about Hitch’s demise.

marisacat - 16 December 2011
Ganjafied Gabacho - 16 December 2011

thanks for that…very satisfying read

marisacat - 16 December 2011

I enjoyed it too… but I still agree with Hitchens on Mother T…. 😆 – and Angry Arab too… 👿

If she could “save” you for her orphanage, she’d give you a bowl of gruel… otherwise imo she’d pick your pockets. And I don’t mean a donation.

I frget if it was CH or AA who said, she never met a Right Wing regime she did not like.

But other than that, and that Hitchens probably wore youth better than he wore anything else…

OH AND: truly grisly he was baptised an American at the hands of Chertoff. What!?, Goebbels had another engagement?

(and it was a good toss off line from Chomsky, too)

Ganjafied Gabacho - 16 December 2011

Yeah moma T and the rest of the papist types have a penchant for authoritarianism in what ever mask is en vogue to wear…but like Cockburn notes they’d give you a bowl of gruel, while Hitch and other “public” schoolers (I swear I went to boarding school with a ton of pricks just like him) wouldn’t…

Madman in the Marketplace - 16 December 2011

If I had to choose whether to come across Hitch’s sort or a godbotherer, I’ll take the rapacious fratboy any day … as long as I keep my pocket covered so they can’t pick it quickly, they’ll quickly move on. Teresa and her ilk won’t/”can’t” leave people the fuck alone. That bowl of gruel will be paid for, one way or another, many times over.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 17 December 2011

you made baby jeebus cry, but you won’t win the war against xmas, you atheist fiend!

ts - 16 December 2011
marisacat - 16 December 2011

oh that ws a very good piece… thanks for that, I would have missed it most likely….

I really think some people are driven actually and really insane by certain presidents… like people who cannot get over Obama and will go down with the ship defending him. For some of them it will become some bizarre mission…

And for Hitchens, something big snapped with Bill (horror that he was and is). It did… much as I thought Hitchens and Blumenthal pretty much deserved each other in that mess.

Madman in the Marketplace - 16 December 2011

Jonathan Schwarz references Perrin’s piece, then offers his thoughts:

I’m sure there’s a more appropriate day to say this, but here’s what I feel about Hitchens’ death: since 8:00 am on September 11, 2001, about five million people in the U.S. have died of cancer. Of that five million, about 130,000 had esophageal cancer, which killed Hitchens. And in the same ten years, 3,010 were killed by Islamist terrorism, 99% of them on the first day.

As Thomas “Crazy Legs” Jefferson said, “The evils which of necessity encompass the life of man are sufficiently numerous. Why should we add to them by voluntarily distressing and destroying one another?” What makes war cheerleading even more grotesque than in the past is that some of these evils no longer encompass life, because we have the knowledge to mitigate or even eliminate them. I’d sure like to have that $3 trillion we’ll eventually spend on the Iraq war back for cancer research. Or Alzheimer’s research. Or more effective antibiotics. Or prenatal nutrition. Or whatever. Who knows what we could have done with it if we hadn’t decided we had to spend it murdering Iraqis.

BooHooHooMan - 17 December 2011

Oh Gad. If it wasn’t spent on the Islamist terrorism it could have been used for medical research. I’ve said some facile shit set-up as construct, but Jeesus Goo-Goo Bene-for – the Military Christ..

lucid - 17 December 2011

that’s really beautifully written…

YUM as in adult illustrated story… and a good one!

Much as Iran claims to be able to do, Pakistan has come out and said it is capable of commandeering U.S. stealth drones and bringing them down quietly on Pakistani soil.

Ashraf Ansari of the Pakistan Observer reports the ability to command the drones may have come about through examining the wreckage of the stealth helicopter that came down within Osama bin Laden’s Abbottabad compound in the May 2 raid.

Prior to finding the wreckage of the chopper destroyed by SEAL Team 6, Pakistan was unaware of the existence of stealth helicopters.

They claim it hasn’t taken them long, however, to understand how to reproduce the stealth coatings and decode the programming within the helicopters communications systems. …..

Ganjafied Gabacho - 16 December 2011

well maybe…my dad was an engineer on the stealth bomber and fighter. back in the 80’s…he claims the wings are made out of “duct tape”; carbon fiber backing, laid down in layers that are at right angles to each other…

marisacat - 16 December 2011

I don’t know anything about how they are engineered, other than the little bits I have read, whcih probably have no meaning and are not, even a little bit, true. But I would think that the Pakistanis can play in public too… just like we do.

ANYTHING that might make evoking with button-busting pride this whole global battlefield execution, extra judicial killing harder to do, would be OK with me.

Not that Slob will stop. So like Bush. Child with lethal toys.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 17 December 2011

yeah, I agree if they really want to war I say sticks and rocks are the only allowed weapons…I’m pretty sure the psychopaths that control things would still demand war, but it would take a lot longer to come up with the same number of casualties…

marisacat - 17 December 2011

oh they would just go back to thousands of fighters/hapless conscripts lined up against each other in a champs de mars, somewhere. No prob.

Hand to hand combat. Fine with the PTB….

Ganjafied Gabacho - 17 December 2011

and fine with the haters, who will line up row after row after row… 😦

Advanced Weapons.

Well. Why worry? Learn to Love the Marketplace!
And we got the Israelites leading the way in Counter-Intelligence.
Which has, like, US leading the way in Counter-Intelligence.
LOL

So, at this point in the economic implosion, with Security-state subcontracts being handed out like floaties in a community pool, not to mention to subterranean Synogogue stragglers whose daytrading and grants from the Faith Based Initiative Programs have fallen on hard times , there’s ALWAYS a bargain in military intelligence.
And the service!
The way ya can just parade them around in the store!

January sales…. which if my guess about christmas sales is at all right, should b deep and frantic.

Like the poor always with us, war too.

Of course, the salesmen and their kids, not to be discounted,
get killed in the end too..

Ghoulish Professional Christians Waste No Time Capitalizing on Hitchens’ Death

Only hours after noted author Christopher Hitchens died of cancer, several of his famous Christian friends were declaring that the atheist would finally know that God is real.

“He was left, I was right, but we had great debates, great drinking bouts,” conservative radio host Bill Bennett said on CBS Thursday. “And I hope as the big atheist that he was, he’s in for a big surprise.”

Pastor Rick Warren called Hitchens a “friend” in a post on Twitter.

“I loved & prayed for him constantly & grieve his loss,” Warren wrote. “He knows the Truth now.”

marisacat - 16 December 2011

in a word, YUCK. But Blame Hitch himself for spending time with such thieves and cads. And bores.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 17 December 2011

I love the glee the “xian” Bennett shows at Hitchs implied entry into the special part of il inferno reserved for atheists….

Pakistan Pokes Fun At US Soldiers With This Photo Of A Shuttered Popeye’s Chicken

Apparently, from the sign on the front of the Popeye’s, shut due to border closing. No chickens in the pots!

It’s from Robert Johnson, who is better than most of the contributors at what I call ”Reader’s Digest” (Business Insider)…

Ganjafied Gabacho - 17 December 2011

loved the graphic showing the circuitous route d ol’ fried chicken has to take to cross the road ( halfa Eurasia)…Why can’t they just ship it on the ocean? Wouldn’t that be “cheaper” and make more “business sense”?

marisacat - 17 December 2011

Something about those German chickens, I guess…. and the land route.

I don’t know Popeye’s (tho we have them here, iirc) maybe they ship in a batter mix?

No matter what, no chicks in the pots!!

SMH on the extent of China’s cyber war

Just the opening graphs.

Google and Intel were logical targets for China-based hackers, given the solid-gold intellectual property data stored in their computers. An attack by cyber spies on iBahn, a provider of Internet services to hotels, takes some explaining.

iBahn provides broadband business and entertainment access to guests of Marriott International Inc. and other hotel chains, including multinational companies that hold meetings on site.

Breaking into iBahn’s networks, according to a senior US intelligence official familiar with the matter, may have let hackers see millions of confidential e-mails, even encrypted ones, as executives from Dubai to New York reported back on everything from new product development to merger negotiations. . . . . .

Ganjafied Gabacho - 17 December 2011

It’s like we’re playing checkers with ourselves and the Chinese are finishing up a game of Go who’s outcome was decided a while ago.

marisacat - 17 December 2011

The article, which is from Bloomberg, did have an irritating bias that Russia and china are the baddies… who go fter private or already owned Intellctual Property… whereas we, the Eternal Goodies, go after warfare targets, terror and so on thru cyber war.

Puhleese.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 17 December 2011

Yet another reason to see the US “withdrawl” as net positive: reams of fire starter just laying around

BAGHDAD: One by one, the marines sat down, swore to tell the truth and began to give secret interviews discussing one of the most horrific episodes of America’s time in Iraq: the 2005 massacre by marines of Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha.

”I mean, whether it’s a result of our action or other action, you know, discovering 20 bodies, throats slit, 20 bodies, you know, beheaded, 20 bodies here, 20 bodies there,” Colonel Thomas Cariker, a commander in Anbar province at the time, told investigators as he described the chaos of Iraq. At times, he said, deaths were caused by ”grenade attacks on a checkpoint and, you know, collateral with civilians”.

The 400 pages of interrogations, once closely guarded as secrets of war, were supposed to have been destroyed as the last US troops prepared to leave Iraq.

Instead, they were discovered with reams of other classified documents, including military maps showing helicopter routes and radar capabilities, by a reporter for The New York Times at a junkyard outside Baghdad. An attendant was burning them as fuel to cook a dinner of smoked carp.

The documents – many marked secret – form part of the military’s internal investigation and confirm much of what happened at Haditha, a Euphrates River town where marines killed 24 Iraqis, including a 76-year-old man in a wheelchair and women and children, some just toddlers.

Popeye’s Chicken uber alles!

Sydney Morning Herald

marisacat - 17 December 2011

And of course it gets out now… as we “depart”, or whatever it is we are not doing.

But like My Lai… you know: just the one that got out that was celebrated, talked about, held up for review…. One of so many.

Ganjafied Gabacho - 17 December 2011

I’m hoping all this hoopla about the info age pans out at least a little bit and the many vectors of documentation of the myriad “Iraqi Mai Lai’s” makes the details of these atrocities live on in history…basically I hope that however many Powell types they’ve got on the dissemble/obfustication case there’s just too much data out there….

Hullo Anon?!, Lulz!? anyone?!

marisacat - 17 December 2011

To be honest I don’t have a lot of hope for that. Thoroughly bi partisan war(s)… and under a white CinC and a black CinC, even. The stupid white liberals and black slobber-support who defend Slob don’t even realise they are fucking war hostages…

There is barely any real discussion that the nation is drained for war, day in and day out. It is sometimes referred to in a distant, vague way, but not pursued. The entire media, rigth and fake left, supports war.

Much less any real writing, dramatisation, discussion of the utter violence and horror of war. I think the strong reinforcement that Iraqis are heathens, as are Afghanis, Pakistanis… Yemenis. Egyptians in Tahrir Sq, while we tolerate them and on off days may laud them, namelessly facelessly – maybe protesters we say perhaps Mubarak goons but we can’t be “sure”!, “they” raped Lara Logan. Etc. Libya was, is a complete white wash. Anything but the lies barely exist in the media here.

We mumble day in and day out about how there is nothing to see here, just the rise of Islamism.

I wish I felt more might happen…

I read a couple of years ago, that in the wake of Vietnam, Dow Chemical withheld advertising in major mainstream media, they concentrated on advertising in trade journals, for about 20 years.

some effect I suppose, in a round-a-bout way.

I heard Panetta do the post-colonial-colonial speech in Libya, that it is now Libya for the Libyans. Multiple exclamation points in his voice (sorta kinda) to show our enthusiasm for Libya for Libyans. Etc.
