Bahmani: I think it’s important to highlight the individual messages especially in a movement like Occupy that’s leaderless, because essentially all the messages, all the voices, are saying the same thing. That’s what really strong about the movement . People from around the country, from all different walks of life have the same concerns. In the editing process, I started to see lots of similarities. I grouped the messages and started making collages. I grouped the families. I grouped the students, who were all saying they were over-educated and underemployed. I grouped the teachers, and the children.

What’s beautiful about the children is that their parents didn’t write their messages for them. The children wrote the messages themselves. One of my favorites says, “More money for education not for war.” Another one was concerned about tuition hikes — he’s like 8 or 10, but he’s saying, ‘Tuition went up by 98 percent in the last ten years — what will it be when I’m in college?’

That’s what makes the voices strongest, after you read one by one, it’s all one voice, yet the people don’t know each other.

Turnstyle: What are your goals for this collection of photos?

Bahmani: I’ve photographed over 200 images and the goal is to shoot over 1,000 images between NYC and the Bay Area. The goal for now is to reach the Kickstarter goal and finish the work. As we move into Spring of 2012, we will see the Occupy movement get stronger and bigger, and I want to photograph that. The photos will be featured in the OWS exhibit in the South Street Seaport Museum, regardless of funding. I’ve been approached by publishers about making a book. For now, it’s just making the work and finishing it, and displaying it. Just having the work amplifies the voice of the 99 percent.

Turnstyle: The Occupy movement is morphing dramatically from what it used to be in September. In your mind, where is the movement headed and how does that influence your portrait project?

Bahmani: I think the movement has changed since September. I think the thing that has changed is the police brutality. It has changed a lot of the messages that people were saying. Initially people were happy coming together, expressing concerns, but now I’ve photographed people with broken arms. On their casts it says, ‘The NYPD did this.’ There’s a lot more frustration.

I get permission from people to take pics and publish it, but I won’t publish their names. I don’t think their names are as important as the messages they have.

brian - 13 January 2012: as an ex-mormon, i’ve heard a couple different explanations on the locations of book of mormon. so in the early days, when joe smith was running the shit, the book of mormon took place in north america. then they switched the location to central america, like it was a history of the incas or whatever lol. but now they’re moving back to america according to this book my dad lent me. the mound builders in the ohio valley or something.
btw, there’s a prophet in the book of mormon who “predicted” that columbus would “discover” america lol

Which is how it always begins isn’t it? Somebody moving in on the panhandling turf. Who controls the drop. Street crews ignoring the Dons rulings after the ritual sitdown. Market share problems. .Eats in to the numbers games, bad enough, but with the effrontery of not kicking up. Yeh there is definitely some weird Brand One True Jesus shit going on. Not that it matters with Mitt , he is fully programmable, biz-and-bot-bomb ready – but I sense there is concern among the strata of American hegemonists about “the Mormons” and “Mormonism” to the degree that Mormans “them people” – aside from the Church willing to play in the whole domestic social-havoc-reeking game, (Prop 8, abortion) how many people can they actually get lathered up to go out and, you know, SHOOT SOME FOREIGNERS. Sometimes it not enoough to be heavy in the arms business going back to the Browning rifle.

So there it is, what I’m getting at: their adversaries “problem” with “them Mormans” as a people happy to spread their way of life overseas and talk about Moroni and Euchre or Malf-Ralpharun or whatever the fuck the various character’s names were: They, as a peaple, as many people fortunately do, seem to come up a bit LACKING in the Hegemonists department, no? John Edwards has life-threatening condition: Judge

GREENSBORO, North Carolina — Ex-presidential candidate John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition that will require surgery next month, 😆 his doctor told a judge presiding over Edwards’ upcoming court case over possible campaign violations.

A cardiologist for the 58-year-old ex-North Carolina Senator wrote two letters about his condition to Judge Catherine Eagles who talked about them Friday during a hearing to consider whether the trial would go on later this month. She delayed it until at least March 26.

Edwards walked into the courtroom in Greensboro without assistance and appeared healthy. The judge requested that he be there.

The judge did not give any more details about what sort of surgery or what illness Edwards may have. The doctor also wrote that Edwards should avoid driving and travel, including to the court proceedings.

“The public has an interest in a speedy trial, and this case has already been continued twice,” Eagles said. “Ordinarily, I would try to manage something like this. But clearly there are some limitations on Mr. Edwards due to real and serious health issues.”

Prosecutors had said they were ready to try Edwards on six felony and misdemeanor counts related to nearly $1 million from wealthy donors used to help hide his pregnant mistress during his 2008 White House run.

Some unintentional American Heroes of comedy placed one of a series of billboards touting the jerb creation skillz of Wisconsin’s Kochgobbler governor Scott Walker directly in front of a shuttered GM factory that sent 10,000 people to the unemployment line. It’s such an apt visual, seeing his fat head up there surveying the landscape of other peoples’ misery with a weaselly, self-satisfied grin. And how is the whole job creation process going in Wisconsin these days? “In every month since June, the state has lost jobs both overall and in the private sector,” according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Has everyone in Wisconsin remembered to sign the recall Walker petition yet? They’re due next week!

The billboard has already come down, boo, after the pro-Walker group that sponsored it heard that the Internet was making fun.

9. Madman in the Marketplace - 14 January 2012: We’re all guilty of dehumanizing the enemy

There is another context for that behavior, though — a more contemporary one. As a society, we may be disgusted by seeing U.S. Marines urinating on dead Taliban fighters, but we remain oddly unfazed by the fact that, presumably, those same Marines just put bullets through the fighters’ chests. American troops are not blind to this irony. They are very clear about the fact that society trains them to kill, orders them to kill and then balks at anything that suggests they have dehumanized the enemy they have killed.

But of course they have dehumanized the enemy — otherwise they would have to face the enormous guilt and anguish of killing other human beings. Rather than demonstrate a callous disregard for the enemy, this awful incident might reveal something else: a desperate attempt by confused young men to convince themselves that they haven’t just committed their first murder — that they have simply shot some coyotes on the back 40.

It doesn’t work, of course, but it gets them through the moment; it gets them through the rest of the patrol.

There is a final context for this act in which we are all responsible, all guilty. A 19-year-old Marine has a very hard time reconciling the fact that it’s okay to waterboard a live Taliban fighter but not okay to urinate on a dead one.

The only larger cat to retain its purring ability is the cheetah. No other animal can make the sound that cats do. Which begs the question, why do cats do it?

The most common theory is that they purr to bond with other cats, since kittens start purring at about the second week, but cats have been known to purr under stressful or painful conditions. Dr. Elizabeth Von Muggenthaler, who is the president of Fauna Communications Research, and, judging by her name, a fully-qualified instructor at Hogwarts, suggests that the vibration can heal injuries and has been shown to increase bone density. Bones respond to pressure by building themselves up. Constant low pressure vibrations could work to the same degree that more occasional high-impact motion does. Cats might have adapted to purr to help keep their muscles, tendons, and bones healthy despite their astounding napping ability.

A sedentary lifestyle isn’t the only way to earn frail bones and sad, weak muscles. Going into space will do the same thing. Astronauts come back from orbiting the earth only to head into physical rehab. Microgravity, the kind that people experience on the space station, can result in one percent bone loss per month. Without the ability to regularly exercise muscles, astronauts also lose muscle mass and strength, especially in their legs. One suit, which simulates the way gravity causes our body to exert pressure on our lower extremities, has already been designed to cope with the damage that space does to people. Maybe a different suit could be designed – one that simulated the frequency and tone of a cat’s purr to help astronauts keep their bones and muscles strong in microgravity. All we need to do is explain that astronauts need to be fitted with vibrating catsuits.

[B]ernanke promised that the first round of quantitative easing (QE1) would boost employment (It hasn’t) and improve housing sales (it never happened) The only uptick in sales occurred because the colluding banks deliberately reduced the supply of foreclosed homes they put on the market. The reduction has led to a massive 1.7 million backlog of housing units (shadow inventory) that will eventually be dumped onto the market triggering another sharp decline in housing prices [yeah no kidding… -Mcat]. Bernanke wants to do something about the bulging inventory as well as prop up the value of sagging MBS. So, the Fed’s plan actually has two main objectives; in other words, it’s the double whammy.

Here’s more from Bloomberg:

“Since the Fed started buying $1.25 trillion of mortgage bonds in January 2009, the value of U.S. housing has fallen 4.1 percent [yup and in SF too, 3.7… -Mcat] , and is down 32 percent from its 2006 peak, according to an S&P/Case-Shiller index. The central bank is poised to buy about $200 billion this year, or more than 20 percent of new loans, as it reinvests debt that’s being paid off. Some Fed officials have said they may support additional purchases that Barclays Capital estimates could total as much as $750 billion.”

Did you catch that? Taxpayers are going to get slammed for another $750 billion. That’s nearly as much as Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the fiscal stimulus that added 2 percent to GDP and kept unemployment from rocketing to 13 percent. Bernanke wants to throw that same amount down a Wall Street sinkhole. . . . . .

“The paper also signaled that the Fed…. will try to involve banks more directly in housing-revival approaches… One area involves efforts to turn foreclosed homes into rental properties….

Banking regulations typically direct banks to sell foreclosed homes quickly, although the rules do recognize this isn’t always practical and so these properties can be held up to five years. The Fed said it is now “contemplating issuing guidance” to banks and regulators that would possibly allow banks to turn some of these foreclosed homes into rental properties…..The hope is this may help stanch the flow of foreclosed properties into markets…” (“Fed Up With the Depressed State of Housing”, Wall Street Journal)

Bingo. The banks are not only sitting on 1.7 million shadow inventory of homes they’ve stockpiled to keep prices artificially high. They also have millions more in the pipeline when a settlement is finally reached on the robo-signing scandal. So, what are they going to do with all that backlog?

That’s easy. They’ll schluff it off on the taxpayer by creating a foreclosure-to-rental swindle where the government provides lavish incentives for banks and private equity scavengers to buy the homes (in bulk) for pennies on the dollar with loans provided by–you guessed it–Uncle Sam.

Here’s a summary of what’s going on behind the scenes:

“As the Obama administration and federal regulators work on a program to sell government-owned foreclosures in bulk to investors, those investors aren’t wasting any time stockpiling cash and buying foreclosed properties at auction and from the major banks.

Oakland, California-based Waypoint Real Estate Group, a major acquirer of so-called “REO to Rental” (Real Estate Owned) just announced a partnership with a private equity firm, Menlo Park, California-based GI Partners, to buy foreclosed properties….

“Our approach to buying distressed single-family houses, renovating them, and leasing to residents who are committed to a path to future home ownership is a viable solution to our nation’s housing crisis,” said Colin Wiel, managing director and co-founder of Waypoint in a press release. “Our partnership with GI Partners ensures we can take the next step in our company’s evolution.” . . . . .

Methinks OWS couldn’t have come along at a worse time from the Bankster’s POV, Defendant’s in greater numbers are fighting back against the foreclosure mills, (more on that singularity at the very end) and are getting good at it, often filing pro se, resisting at every step of the way, filing counterclaims, demanding trial. Previously facilitated by what’s left of decent housing advocates, there is now ( in no small part inspired by OWS in my opinion) a clear resurgence in legal resistance and physical occupation,, all the while conserving their resources at every step of the way thru appeal and beyond.
The money mongers? Oh it’s gonna cost ’em. Already is. Plenty.

For the Banksters? (Corzine being a smaller fry among big ‘taters, Dimon is now whining at losses)..Those MotU who bet on a quick roll-over-and-die in Europe? They are being confronted with broad based resistance now , beating up and arresting several thousand in the streets much easier and inexpensive than millions of litigants in court. Banks now have the option of carrying an unperforming loan for free (cause interest rates are zero – actually, they get 1/4 point for their excess reserves so they make money), or spending money to write it off and take a loss.
