Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. This is the counterterrorist car chase of the future.

Somewhere in East Africa or the southern Arabian peninsula, several years from now, an unassuming SUV drives off the road and rolls down its window. From the passenger seat, there’s a blast as a missile shoots into the air. It careens as far as 60 miles, in pursuit of terrorists traveling in their own SUVs, who’ll never see the light truck that launched it.

This is a future that the U.S. Special Operations Command wants as it fights the nation’s shadow wars in places like Somalia and Yemen. A new solicitation seeks what it calls a “Medium Range Precision Strike System.” Obscured within that anodyne phrase is an ambitious weapons system optimized for stealthy strikes with minimal footprints — for those times when a drone strike just isn’t the right tool for the job.

The missile system the commandos want fits into a “light, commercially available truck.” The whole thing has to be completely self-contained within the SUV, weighing no more than 900 lbs. — as much as five 180 lb. dudes, sans gear — and no longer than 200 inches. “All cables, power sources, fire control and any other required accessories” have to be packed in as well, because the missile system has to open fire from the open road. You might want to call shotgun.

That’s because the target is often on the move, as well. “The enemy vehicles could be stationary or moving commercial SUVs, pick-ups, or sedans,” reads the solicitation. And they could be way, way far away: The missiles need an “objective maximum range of not less than one hundred (100) kilometers,” or about 62 miles.

If the desired missile system actually does make it into the light trucks of elite troops, it would unite the two principal tools for prosecuting the U.S.’s “shadow wars” against terrorists: missile strikes and commando raids. Usually those strikes come either from cruise missiles or overhead drones. But the Special Operations Command missile wouldn’t be purely surface-to-surface. “It is highly desirable that the system be compatible with various fixed and rotary wing aircraft,” the solicitation reads.

Except for the airborne part, the missile in the car follows in a long special-operations tradition: biting the very styles of the insurgents, terrorists and guerrillas the commandos hunt. Terrorists have used RPGs fired from the backs of flatbed trucks as portable artillery weapons for years. In Iraq, some jury-rigged wheelbarrows to construct mobile rocket launchers.

(1) I love the way the text for HR 347 is written to obscure the fact that protestors can be charged for protesting in restricted areas when they have no means of determining whether those areas are restricted at that moment, and that there is no definition of what will be temporarily visiting really means (within a day? hours? …):

`(1) the term `restricted buildings or grounds’ means any posted, cordoned off, or otherwise restricted area–

(A) of the White House or its grounds, or the Vice President’s official residence or its grounds;

(B) of a building or grounds where the President or other [a] person protected by the Secret Service is or will be temporarily visiting; ….

Science controversies past and present

Science—especially the science behind climate change—is under fire. The climate issue has sparked a vigorous, and at times surreal, public debate that seems to pit experts against one another on even the most basic facts, such as whether human greenhouse gas emissions dominate natural ones, whether added carbon dioxide alters the planetary emission of thermal radiation to space, and whether global temperatures are rising.1 At its heart, global warming is a physics problem, albeit a messy one that cannot proceed far without bringing in meteorology, oceanography, and geology. (See the article by Raymond Pierrehumbert in PHYSICS TODAY, January 2011, page 33 .) The climate debate has spread far beyond the confines of any of those scientific circles and into the media and public sphere, where politicization and vitriol are legion.

Although nearly all experts accept that the greenhouse gases emitted by humans have caused significant warming to the planet and will likely cause much more, only about half the US public agrees, even after years of heavy media coverage. How did we get into such a mess? What are the implications for science, for how it should be communicated, and for how debates should be interpreted? Some insights may be gained by noting that global warming is not the first “inconvenient truth” in physics. Consider this description of another, bygone debate:

The decision [whether to accept the new theory] was not exclusively, or even primarily, a matter for astronomers, and as the debate spread from astronomical circles it became tumultuous in the extreme. To most of those who were not concerned with the detailed study of celestial motions, Copernicus’s innovation seemed absurd and impious. Even when understood, the vaunted harmonies seemed no evidence at all. The resulting clamor was widespread, vocal, and bitter.2

Thus does science historian Thomas Kuhn describe the difficulties experienced by astronomers in convincing the public of the heliocentric theory of the solar system, which ultimately ushered in the scientific revolution. The “clamor” prevailed around the time of Galileo Galilei, more than a half century after Nicolaus Copernicus, on his deathbed, published the heliocentric model in 1543. Copernicus’s calculations surpassed all others in their ability to describe the observed courses of the planets, and they were based on a far simpler conception. Yet most people would not accept heliocentricity until two centuries after his death.

The agitations of modern greenhouse proponents appear to have provoked an antiscience backlash similar to the one against Galileo. In the space of only two years, almost as fast as Bellarmine changed his position on Copernicanism, leading moderates have been squeezed out of the main conservative political parties in both the US and Australia and replaced by hard-line rejecters of climate science. In Australia, climate policy was the leading issue behind the backlash; in the US it was one of many contributing factors. Because the Catholic Church of Galileo’s day had generally been a supporter of science and open inquiry, the condemnation of Copernicanism as it grew scientifically solid shocked many devout Catholics.2 Likewise, modern conservative political parties have until recently been friends of science, including climate and environmental studies. In the 1970s Republicans and Democrats in Congress were equally concerned about climate change, and as recently as 2004 leading Republicans were—at least in public—enthusiastic in their support of science. Their recent rejections of climate science have probably shocked many supporters. In both cases the backlash seems to have come when leaders were pushed to act on the basis of new evidence.

The ugly nature of the current climate debate, with its increasingly frequent characterization of scientists as opportunists, totalitarians, or downright criminals, is also, unfortunately, not new. Copernicus (posthumously) and his prominent followers through Isaac Newton were all accused of being heretics or atheists. Einstein was derided by his political opponents through the 1920s and 1930s as a Communist—despite his dim view of the Soviet Union—or simply as a fraud. When a group of American women tried to prevent him from entering the US because of his supposed Communism, he quipped, “Never before have I experienced from the fair sex such energetic rejection of all advances, or if I have, then certainly never from so many at once.”9 At one point Einstein stopped giving public lectures out of fear for his personal safety, also now a worry for some greenhouse warming proponents.

Opening the conference, “Renewable Energy and Beyond,” hosted at Tel Aviv University, keynote speaker Al Gore discussed the soaring price of oil and the continuing threat of greenhouse gases, warming the planet to what Gore said could be the “point of no return.” Gore came to Tel Aviv University in May to accept a $1 million Dan David Prize for his work on “social responsibility with particular emphasis on the environment.”

Ohio Gov. John Kasich said thanks but no thanks to immediate federal disaster relief Saturday, even as governors in Indiana and Kentucky welcomed the help.

Kasich did not rule out asking for assistance later, but his decision means tornado-ravaged towns in Ohio will not get federal aid now and are not eligible at this time for potentially millions of dollars in payments and loans.

The governor said Ohio can respond to the crisis without federal help and he would not ask federal authorities to declare the region a disaster area.

“I believe that we can handle this,” Kasich said while visiting a shelter for storm victims at New Richmond High School. “We’ll have down here all the assets of the state.”

The core House group of roughly 10 negotiators is derived from a larger Gang of 100 lawmakers led by Reps. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) and Health Shuler (D-N.C.), who urged the debt supercommittee to strike a grand bargain last year.
That larger group includes GOP centrists like Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-Ohio), who has said Republicans should abandon their no-new-tax-revenue pledge, as well as Tea Party-backed members like Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.).

The key test in the coming months will be to see whether the core group can get buy-in from many of the 100 members who vaguely support “going big” on the deficit once real cuts and tax increases are identified.

The talks are so sensitive that some members involved do not yet want to be identified.

Shuler, who is retiring this year, is keen to establish a legacy as a deficit cutter before leaving Congress and he is involved in the drafting effort.

His efforts have the strong support of House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), who is actively meeting with individual Democrats to try to get them on board with finding a compromise that stabilizes the national debt.

Anna Gristina, 44, an Ugg-wearing animal lover, 😯 operated her high-priced prostitution ring out of an East 78th Street apartment, and boasted “business contacts worldwide,” Manhattan Assistant DA Charles Linehan told a judge at the alleged madam’s arraignment hearing.

Her “black book” included powerful politicians, top-law enforcement, influential lawyers, bankers, entertainment execs and Fortune 500 businessmen, as well as several ultra-wealthy European clients, sources said.

The petite, blond Gristina was caught on wiretaps claiming “to have made millions over the 15 or so years she has been in business as a madam,” Linehan said, according to newly released transcripts of the Feb. 23 hearing.

At one point, Gristina was caught on tape saying her law-enforcement pals were “poised to help her out, to let her know if there is trouble on the front that she needs to be concerned about, particularly back during the Eliot Spitzer investigation,” Linehan said, referring to the former governor’s hooker scandal.

Neighbors say the second-floor apartment saw a steady stream of women, usually of Eastern European descent, and men in business suits arriving and leaving in black livery cars.

The building is owned by a close confidant of Gristina’s, a lawyer who “invests her money, helped her set up her business and helps to launder her money,” prosecutors said.

Her legal pal has even provided a retirement plan with her ill-gotten gains — and, in case she was ever caught, a nest egg to fall back on after doing her time.

The prosecutor added that Gristina hasn’t reported income to the government in a number of years, and that New York State authorities will also be charging her with tax evasion.

“It’s a very strong case against her if it were to go to trial,” said Linehan.
Authorities were so worried Gristina would slip away from them that they devised an elaborate sting operation to collar her, prosecutors said.

They lay in wait until she left her Monroe home and traveled to the office of her Morgan Stanley pal to discuss setting up a website for matching hookers and johns. They busted her there.

Law enforcement officials from the Manhattan DA’s office also raided her Monroe home, where the animal lover keeps a pen of pet pigs. One of her hogs chased at least one investigator as he went to serve the warrant, according to a source.

Kristin Davis, who claimed to have run a Manhattan call-girl service used by disgraced former Gov. Spitzer, said she shared a booker, Winnie Wong, with Gristina.

Davis said she once spoke to Gristina, who told her that a highly placed official alerted her to a 2005 investigation.

Investigators armed with an arrest warrant also showed up at Gristina’s New Rochelle, Westchester County, apartment in 2004, according to a neighbor. The neighbor said he did not know why cops were after her.

Davis said that move by authorities tipped off Gristina and prompted her to shut down her agency, Fleur d’ Elite, and lay low for a while.

The escort service offered johns a three-tiered pricing system for its girls. Costs ranged from $1,000 for the “Dream Model” girls, to $1,500 for “Calendar Girls, fashion models and budding actors,” to $2,000 and up for the “Ultimate Elite Model” category.

Her ex-husband, Dario Gristina, who is running for state Assembly from Putnam County, said that he was shocked by the news. “We divorced a long time ago. I was surprised,” he said.

I read a few months ago of a German town, I forget which one, that decided to allow streetwalkers to use a system of paying into a a sort of street meter – not unlike what is used for parking cars!, in effect pay a very short term rental on whatever area they stake out for offering their services… But of course ooops! such flexibility, and straightforward address to what is an absolute constant in life, is of course in a German state that permits and licenses sex workers…

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found President Barack Obama has gained overall support — with marked gains among key groups of female voters.

Obama has gained support among white and suburban women. In both groups, the president is up to a 45 percent approval rating from 40 percent in December. Overall among women, approval for the president rose to 54 percent versus 40 percent disapproval. In December, both his overall approval and disapproval among women were 47 percent.

The poll also found overall support for the president’s contraception coverage mandate, with 53 percent of those surveyed approving of the federal requirement that employers cover birth control as part of a package for preventive services for women. One third opposed it.

Support split — 43 pro and 43 against — when respondents were told specifically that the coverage includes the “morning after pill.” And it dropped to 38 percent when respondents were asked about how they felt about the same requirement for religious employers, even if insurance companies picked up the costs. . . . . . .
