Charles Davis, filling in for Glenn G today.

Similarly, those on the right who condemn Manning do so in a manner repellent to the more refined liberal palette. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, for instance – in the midst of selling his children’s book, Can’t Wait Till Christmas! – declared that for Manning, “anything less than execution is too kind a penalty.”

How uncouth. How vulgar. On the center-left, the position is much more sensible: don’t outright murder the guy, at least not without a show trial, but don’t you dare let him see the light of day again. As Obama himself pronounced, “He broke the law,” which is something that must be obeyed by everyone but bankers and torturers and presidents. We can’t just expose the state-sanctioned torture and murder of innocents willy-nilly. We can’t just listen to our own consciences when confronted with institutional evil. That’d be anarchy. Which is bad.

To be fair, liberals can’t really be blamed for their reaction to Manning. What he did was fundamentally radical, not reformist. He didn’t settle for working within a system explicitly designed to thwart the exposure of wrongdoing, through a chain of command that callously ignores concern for non-American life. Having access to evidence of grotesque crimes no one around him seemed to care about, he engaged in direct action, exposing them for the benefit of the world and those paying for them, the U.S. taxpayer.

“[I]f you had free reign over classified networks for long periods of time,” Manning reportedly wrote to the man who ultimately turned him in, “and you saw incredible things, awful things… things that belonged in the public domain, and not on some server stored in a dark room in Washington DC… what would you do? ” We know what his answer was. And we know what the guardians of establishment liberalism would have had him do: Nothing.

Judge for yourself which is more defensible.

marisacat - 11 April 2012

As Obama himself pronounced, “He broke the law,”

Oh yes, the lord high commissioner… advising us. More than one instance when one wonders that he taught Con Law, as they call it.

We are so fucking scrooood.

diane - 12 April 2012

that poor young man has been violated so viciously, it’s stunning; but then this country has historically honed violation to a fine art, then placed a ‘Black’ Trojan Horse to refute that history.

Speaking of violation, Charles Davis also put up a good piece on Wells Fargo Bank‘s large obscene investment in the $UZ$ Prison Industry™.

2. marisacat - 12 April 2012

hmmmmm I suppose the Hillary Rosen move could have been stupider, but hard to see how.

And reading this from Politico, it seems she went further than some stray comment on some pundit drivel snivel show… tweets – a few… including a response to Ann Romney’s own reply to her – and columns at HuffPo and CNN. Apparenlty she re wrote the Huff Po version in the dark of last night.

Good Luck!! Don’t call don’t write.

Watched a segment of a CBS reporter going to the top of what I guess they re calling One World Trade Center…. 104 stories up with the high steel iron workers…

I got vertigo just watching… then a worker said the new building is “NY’s middle finger to al Qaeda”.

what a mess we are in… drowning in terrible fiction.

diane - 12 April 2012

I get vertigo just reading about it. ….. More like a middle finger to sanity.

FWIW Jeralyn gives a pretty decent summary, meaning hard points along with her defense bar reactions, to the document – arrest affidavit – filed with the court supporting, at least bare bones, charging Zimmerman.

This is probably the important part of her summary (she does linke to the pdf):

But it seems the state has probably foreclosed a conviction on a federal hate crimes charge. With state investigators swearing under oath Zimmerman said “punks” instead of the alleged racial slur, even if others disagree, there’s no way it will pass the proof beyond a reasonable doubt requirement for a hate crime conviction.

EVERYBODY, all sides, is biased in this mess. So Jeralyn is just one point of view… LOL….

(Good Luck to all…. )

diane - 12 April 2012

The case could go down in hiztory as to why White Folk didn’t like Obombster, or the son that he never had (even though they voted for him in droves, and even though he probably holds hoodies, other than snow white ones, in contempt).

The sainted mother wore false eyelashes at the congratulatory flap-on yesterday, at Sharpton’s NAN convention or whatever that has been for a couple of days…. National Action Network, I think it stands for.

It is interesting how MUCH the WH overplayed their hand here… I had missed the remarks that Holder made to NAN the day before. Blew me away a bit. All slobber and hosannas for Sharpton.

Do they NEED to bolster their votes with what I call ‘Church and Law and ORder’ Blacks? Maybe, I sure would not tknow.

To me, this ALL is not working… and the poor dead youth, whatever or whoever he was, is long gone.

ts - 12 April 2012

I’ve been reading a lot over at Balko recently. I don’t know if its recently gotten really bad, or whether it’s a continuous trend, but there doesn’t seem to be a day where a police officer isn’t beating on some poor slob without reason. I mean, Balko himself apologized for not covering Trayvon until a week after the shooting because there were 5-6 other police shootings of innocent people/bystanders to cover.

marisacat - 12 April 2012

There is plenty of it…. We have all colors shot and killed – I mean in the greater Bay Area…. . And beaten…. Mostly men, but that is the only slight restriction (and the cops appear very happy to almost single out women in protest situations, like NYC).

It really is ANYONE vulnerable.

POC, whites, poor whites, the homeless and the sadly deranged. People of several colors have been shot inside the family home or in the driveway, cops responding to emergency calls from, yes, the family, but with the family right there begging for no shooting.

Last year a white man in Marin, inside his own home not deranged but a bit tipsy and having made a intemperate comment (”Oh I think I will just kill myself!”) was tasered three times, with his dog frantic and his wife begging for them to stop. It was all caught on tape for once, the whole scene….

It all started with a call to 911 for an EMT team and a cop car decided to respond as well.

That poor man in upstate NY, Chamberlain, awful case. I think the cops did what they did as it was public housing…. And it languished until his children tried to get some notice at the same time as Trayvon….

Madman in the Marketplace - 12 April 2012

I think it’s been going on for a while, but now there are cameras on every cell phone and people tweeting and facebooking things as they witness them.

ms_xeno - 13 April 2012

Just another day in paradise.

In the biggest news regarding police shootings, perhaps since we started Portland Copwatch in 1992, the officer who “accidentally” shot William Monroe with live live rounds from a “less lethal” shotgun (PPR #54) was indicted in mid-November. Officer Dane Reister (#31663) was indicted on third and fourth degree assault charges by a Multnomah County grand jury. According to the Oregonian (November 19), this is the first time in County history that an officer has been charged for on-duty use of force…

marisacat - 13 April 2012

Movement however slight…. is a sign of a trickle f light on yonder battlefield.

Take heart!!!

According to the Oregonian (November 19), this is the first time in County history that an officer has been charged for on-duty use of force…

[yeah right]

We had a spectacular cop kill yesterday in an eviction event over in Modesto – inland Cali. hours of stand off, accrding to the media, 15 agencies, 4 swat teams, a sheriff dep killed at the door along with an unnamed civilian there to blast the lock… tear gas lobbed into the unit (a condo, eviction on foreclosure) caugt fire, fire burned for hours… on and on.

And on.

Madman did a quick google noos search for “standoff suspect” and got a slew of events in the past several days….

ms_xeno - 14 April 2012

I really do love Dan Handleman. He’s been at this forever now. I’m sorry it’s necessary, but at least somebody’s doing it.

And, yeah. Gotta’ take the crumbs when you can get them.

5. diane - 12 April 2012

Oh why …. WHY so soooon, when they[we]’ve only just begun ♫:

‘Texts From Hillary Clinton’ founders call it quits

Yahoo News spoke with Lambe and Smith when the Tumblr launched about the project.”The site is meant to be a compliment to Hillary. Hopefully, everyone gets that,” [oooopsie, … mehbe “everyone” didn’t? …and furthermore, weren’t all on board as to why Hillary should be so “compliment”ed? – diane] Lambe told us via email.

I’ll bet they were absolutely swamped with recollects of ugly shit that the Hillz has said and done.

marisacat - 12 April 2012

Long may it sink.

diane - 12 April 2012

and, for fucks sake …the truly twisted thing, is that some (only saw two of them, both were apparent complimentary “favorites”) of those “complimentary” “texts,” would only be complimentary to a megalomaniacal sadist, or thug.

marisacat - 12 April 2012

I pretty much avoided it except when here or there, someone or other, used something from it….

6. marisacat - 12 April 2012

Sabrina Fulton retracts her earlier statement (think it was this am on NBC with Ann Curry) that the situation had spiraled out of control, she believed and the shooting was an accident.

“Earlier today, I made a comment to the media that was later mischaracterized. When I referenced the word ‘accident’ today with regard to Trayvon’s death, in NO way did I mean the shooting was an accident. We believe that George Zimmerman stalked my son and murdered him in cold blood. The ‘accident’ I was referring to was the fact that George Zimmerman and my son ever crossed paths. It was an accidental encounter. If George Zimmerman hadn’t gotten out of his vehicle, this entire incident would have been avoided. My son was profiled, followed and murdered by George Zimmerman, and there was nothing accidental about that.”

Q.: I want to ask Tracy and Sybrina, either of you can take this question. If you were to come face to face with George Zimmerman, what do you want to tell him? What do you want to ask him?

A.: One of the things that I still believe in: a person should apologize when they are actually remorseful for what they’ve done. I believe it was an accident. I believe that it just got out of control, and he couldn’t turn the clock back. I would ask him, did he know that that was a minor, that that was a teenager and that he did not have a weapon? I would ask him — that I understand that his family is hurting, but think about our family that lost our teenage son. I mean, it’s just very difficult to live with day in and day out. I’m sure his parents can pick up the phone and call him, but we can’t pick up the phone and call Trayvon anymore.

As I understand it, under FL law the SYG law is protective from not just criminal but CIVIL litigation as well. The family had to obtain an arrest in order to sue.

Good Luck!!

marisacat - 13 April 2012

ooo thanks for that…

I read that Biden was confused yesterday as to the Tps of the day… if he forgot to attack Rosen…. then he babbled about the Republican War on the Wimmens.

LOL Made me think of Specter a few years ago, when he changed parties once too many times and did not have the Dem party script in hand. Still had his old PA Republicanos script at the ready.

At least I got some entertainment.

really horrid reading many of the comments there, did a trip down memory lane with one that Mike Flug[whatever] made about the glass ceiling, it reminded me of some prick (my prior BossMan) made to me when he became privy to my current salary, paraphrasing:

that sounds reasonable, that’s what my girlfriend makes

despite the fact that his girlfriend was in a non comparable occupation, but my salary should (of course) be centered around his girlfriends salary, and certainly LOWER than HIS.

And, just like Mike Flug[whatever], the MotherFucker stated it with a Straight Face.

Flugennock is an excellent cartoonist, but on feminism he’s as useless as the most of the rest of the SMBIVA yahoos.

Sort of like how Ampersand at Alas can be good on feminism and working it into his cartoons, but on anything regarding Leftism beyond the Democratic party, he’s pretty much useless. And last I checked, so was pretty much everyone else on his blog. He had an Anarchist Feminist blogger there for a while, maybe still does. But she was safely located in NZ, not in the U.S. Non-Democratic Leftism is like a treasured exotic pet, and not to be considered in a serious light in the good ol’ USA.

marisacat - 14 April 2012

ugh I went over to take a look around… I haven’t gotten to the comments yet, but the MJS post on “war on women, war on everybody” is REALLY bad. Almost unbelievably bad.

Men know nothing about abortion NOR about the political realities of anti-abortion in both parties and in the many many many jerkwad religions that are infesting this country.

I hardly bother there much anymore, every few weeks I poke around.

Yikes is all I can say. MJS lives with horse blinders on.

marisacat - 14 April 2012

Rolling, massive ignorance:

As a factual matter, real substantive restrictions on abortion are unlikely to happen, though degrading ritual humiliations are our way of life these days — naked pictures and crotch-groping at airports, for example. But neither Republicans nor Democrats really want a lot more potentially restless poor people getting born, and the bourgeoisie want exactly their 1.47 children, not a hair more or less, and they certainly don’t want their 17-year-old daughters to become mothers. So as a practical matter, abortion is safe.

marisacat - 14 April 2012

And then of course there is the Barry O’Bama contribution, that “you can’t have one just because you are blue”.

And Let’s not forget his declaration that God is in his marriage bed. Well, he claimed “God is in the mix” with relation to his hesitancy on SSM…. his sanctified and God SHared Union being so holy I guess.

Please, keep that and your MIL to yourselves. Don’t involve us.

Yes, Virginia, this is Obama’s JOBS Act

So to recap: Three different Obama-created committees contributed major policy ideas to the bill. Obama himself heartily endorsed it through his Statement of Administration Policy. And the bill sailed through the Democratic-controlled Senate when someone up above decided it would be too much trouble to bother with the normal committee process of debate, testimony, and amendments.

Of course the Republicans wanted this bill, pushed for it, wrote its most piggish passages. But the Republicans always suck on these issues. The real political question, as it always is in Washington, is how much the Democrats choose to fight back and do their jobs, versus how much they choose to step aside and take Wall Street money in exchange for “letting nature take its course.” And the JOBS Act is a classic example of a Democratic administration looking the other way while thieves robbed the store.

marisacat - 12 April 2012

uhhhhh it’s not really a question…

The real political question, as it always is in Washington, is how much the Democrats choose to fight back and do their jobs, versus how much they choose to step aside and take Wall Street money in exchange for “letting nature take its course.”

Well unless someone believes in Santa and Easter Bunny… Tooth Fairy. And so on… “Step aside” wins!!!!! 😆 Step aside, drop to knees…………………………………

Tevlin: DeLaSalle kids have a few words with archdiocese at marriage talk

Oh, these kids give me some little bit of hope:

“The first three-quarters of the presentation were really good,” said Bliss. “They talked about what is marriage and how marriage helps us as a society. Then it started going downhill when they started talking about single parents and adopted kids. They didn’t directly say it, but they implied that kids who are adopted or live with single parents are less than kids with two parents of the opposite sex. They implied that a ‘normal’ family is the best family.”

“When they finally got to gay marriage, [students] were really upset,” said Bliss. “You could look around the room and feel the anger. My friend who is a lesbian started crying, and people were crying in the bathroom.”

Bliss was one of several students who stood up to argue with the representatives from the archdiocese. One girl held up a sign that said, “I love my moms.”

Mike O’Keefe, a spokesman for the school, said that other students were mad that some of the students spoke out and thought that some of them were “rude” to the visitors from the archdiocese.

“We weren’t being rude,” countered Lydia Hannah, another student who spoke out. “But people were upset, and we weren’t just going to sit there.”

Hannah said students were anxious when they heard about the program and were suspicious because only seniors were required to go. “We put two and two together,” said Hannah. “All of us will be able to vote next fall [on the constitutional amendment that limits marriage to same-sex couples].”

A priest and a volunteer couple presented the information. When someone asked a question about two men being able to have a quality, committed relationship, the couple compared their love to bestiality, Bliss said.

“Most people got really upset,” said Bliss. “And comments about adopted kids, I found those to be really offensive. There were at least four kids there who are adopted.”

Hannah, who is adopted, said one of the presenters said that adopted kids were “sociologically unstable.” She called the comments “hurtful” and comparisons between gay love and bestiality upsetting.

“My friend said, ‘You didn’t just compare people to animals, did you?'” said Hannah. “I think everyone has a right to their opinion, and I don’t judge them on it. But we don’t force people to sit down so we can tell them their opinion is wrong.”

At one point, Bliss raised his hand and, “as politely as I could,” began to argue with the presenters. He used his knowledge of history to refute many of their points, and explained that various cultures have accepted and embraced homosexuality going back hundreds of years.

“I think they were surprised by the history I gave them and surprised that I was so calm,” said Bliss. “I don’t think they expected the response they got from the students.”

They were so upset that the priest and school officials abruptly ended the assembly. Students who were angry were allowed to stay there and talk with the archdiocese volunteers. It was more civil, for a while, but the more questions the presenters tried to answer, the worse it got.

“It was a really awful ending,” said Bliss. “It was anger, anger, anger, and then we were done and they left. This is really a bad idea.”

Paul Hannah, Lydia’s dad and an attorney who specializes in First Amendment law (and who has represented the Star Tribune), supports his daughter’s response. In an e-mail he said: “I was very proud of her and the other De kids.”

ts - 13 April 2012

They really don’t like it when you disagree politely. They’d much prefer you to yell becuse then they can scream “Persecution!” and smear you for how awful was your reaction to their provocation.

I think this video is another example of how to do it (embedded)

I love how these are the same Bible-loving fuckwits who bag on anyone wanting an abortion. Oh, but remember that if you have the baby instead of aborting and put it up for adoption (or, horror of horrors, want to raise it by yourself), you’re dooming it to a life of “abnormality.”

I’m glad there are people who can keep their temper reined in when coming face to face with this fuckery, but I don’t think I’d be one of them. >:

I dunno…. Energizer Bunny Ex Veep. I guess.

I scammed this from Instapundit:

HE’S BAAACK! Cheney on Obama:

“He has been an unmitigated disaster to the country.”

Apparently the lefty death-tweets had no impact:

“Former Vice President Dick Cheney walked onstage without any assistance and spoke for an hour and 15 minutes without seeming to tire in his first public engagement since he underwent a heart transplant three weeks ago.”

Ugh I had something so minor, by comparison to heart transplant, when I was in the hospital… and I was a complete basket case at 3 weeks out from discharge..
