PIck an orifice: and ram that cross right up it… 4 June 2007

Mt Davidson cross, San Francisco (yeah really and on city property too)

Their come to Jim Wallis moment.  So tawdry of them.

Edwards led off:

O’BRIEN: There are some people who say, well, it’s actually — isn’t it mutually exclusive? I mean, either man was created by, you know, from Adam’s rib or, in fact, that man came evolution-wise from apes? Aren’t the two mutually exclusive?

EDWARDS: No, I don’t think they are. Because the hand of God was in every step of what’s happened with man. The hand of God today is in every step of what happens with me and every human being that exists on this planet.

shud-d-d-d-d-d-der

For the balance, in long grafs, he speaks of how sanctified his Great Works have been over the past 30 or so months. Truly, a life lived for others.  Wade and, of course, the Illness take the place of “son of a mill worker”.  It is thuddingly transparent.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Obama:

So when I look at the situation in the Middle East — and this is true in other conflicts around the world — the question I ask myself — and this is where I do think faith comes in — is, is there a way for us to reconcile the claims of both sides of the conflict in a way that leads to resolution and a better life for all people?

And that, I think, is something that can be achieved, but it’s going to require some soul-searching on the Palestinian side. They have to recognize Israel’s right to exist; they have to renounce violence and terrorism as a tool to achieve their political ends; they have to abide by agreements. In that context,

I think the Israelis will gladly say, “Let’s move forward negotiations that would allow them to live side by side with the Palestinians in peace and security.”

Throw it on the piles of AiPAC lies.  He did not stop, a band-aid of faith on a gusher of blood:

And that’s where I think faith can inform what we do: Faith can say, forgive someone who has treated us unjustly. Faith can say that, regardless of what’s happened in the past, there’s a brighter future ahead. And that’s the kind of faith that I think has to inform, not just our international policies, but also domestic policies, as well.

Shove that cross in farther. Hang little stars of David iwth razor edges from the cross beam…

We tend to tout our individualism and our self-reliance — and those are important things — but we also arrived at this place because we rose and fell together. And I think it’s that spirit that’s been lost in our politics over the last several years.

So my starting point as president is to restore that sense that we are in this together. That’s the starting point. And faith informs that. My moral commitments to that vision of what Dr. King called a beloved community rose out of my faith.

Well, sadly he was shot and killed.  A tragedy … his family only fought for 30 years to mount an actual court case.

It is inflammatory, but suddenly I thought of Al Jolson.  No, I really did.  Maybe the statue out in Forest Lawn.

You get the drift they cannot do right in my book….

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Hillary… who basically says our sins of commision and omission are… wait for it!

.

MORAL!

Mike Gravel said last night that you lack moral judgment because of your vote on the war in Iraq. You blame President Bush a lot.

Do you feel you have is a moral responsibility for your vote?

CLINTON: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely.

I think that every vote I take carries with it a moral responsibility, and it is always a challenge to try to arrive at what you think is the right thing to do based on the information and the assessment that you make at a time. And sometimes it turns out that you’re right, and sometimes it doesn’t. But certainly every vote has a moral implication.

You know, we’re debating immigration right now in the Senate. I think that is a highly moral debate as to what we will do as a nation with respect to immigrants. And the faith community has been very involved in that, as they have been with questions of war and questions of poverty, too.

And don’t m iss the nod to her RW “prayer warriors”.. and those faith chains.  Lordy.

For some people, being tested in cruel and tragic ways leads them away from faith. For me, because I have been tested in ways that are both publicly known and those that are not so well known or not known at all, my faith and the support of my extended faith family, people whom I knew who were literally praying for me in prayer chains, who were prayer warriors for me, and people whom I didn’t know, who I would meet or get a letter from, sustained me through a very difficult time.

Oh bullshit… that was coded language.

And really the whole thing was so rigged.  So they each could present their targetted information.  What a shock!!

Hillary gets a question on abortion from… a TELEVANGELIST from FL. People worship with him from 1400 locations every weekend!

The Reverend Joel C. Hunter is the senior pastor at Northland Church, one of the largest churches in Florida; 1,400 locations worship with them around the globe every single weekend.Go ahead, Reverend.CLINTON: Hello, Reverend.

REVEREND JOEL C. HUNTER, NORTHLAND, A CHURCH DISTRIBUTED: Hi, Senator Clinton.

Abortion continues to be one of the most hurtful and divisive facts of our nation. I come from the part of the faith community that is very strongly pro-life. I know you’re pro-choice, but you have indicated that you would like to reduce the number of abortions.

Could you see yourself, with millions of voters in a pro-life camp, creating a common ground, with the goal ultimately in mind of reducing the decisions for abortion to zero?

CLINTON: Yes. Yes.

And that is what I have tried to both talk about and reach out about over the last many years, going back, really, at least 15 years, in talking about abortion being safe, legal, and rare. And, by rare, I mean rare.

And it’s been a challenge, because the pro-life and the pro- choice communities have not really been willing to find much common ground. And I think that is a great failing on all of our parts, because, for me…

(APPLAUSE)

CLINTON: … there are many opportunities to assist young people to make responsible decisions.

There is a tremendous educational and public outreach that could be done through churches, through schools, through so much else. But I think it has to be done with an understanding of reaching people where they are today.

We have so many young people who are tremendously influenced by the media culture and by the celebrity culture, and who have a very difficult time trying to sort out the right decisions to make.

And I personally believe that the adult society has failed those people. I mean, I think that we have failed them in our churches, our schools, our government. And I certainly think the, you know, free market has failed. We have all failed.

We have left too many children to sort of fend for themselves morally. And, so, I think there is a great opportunity. But it would require sort of a — a leaving at the sides the suspicion and the baggage that comes with people who have very strong, heartfelt feelings.

You know, when I first started thinking about this very difficult issue — because it is. It’s a moral issue. And it should not be in any way diminished as a moral issue, no matter which side you’re on, because I have seen cases where I honestly believed that the — the moral choice was very complicated and not so straightforward as to what a young woman, her family, her physician, her pastor should do.

And what concerns me is that there’s been a — a real reluctance for anyone to make a move toward the other side, for fear of being labeled as turning one’s back on the moral dimensions of the issue from either direction.

So, I would invite you, and I would be willing to work with you, to see whether there couldn’t be some common ground that one could find.

Gibberish.  Mixed with drool for power. That would be all of them (3 + 3)...  And yes… hidden away under the slightly longer suit coat… yes, a zipper fly.  She swears she is Golda. Or Begin.  Or both.

On to the wars! Jesus is with us, every step of the way.

The quote from Edwards is pretty reasonable to me, but the Clinton stuff is disgusting:

there are many opportunities to assist young people to make responsible decisions.

For example, the decision not to listen to religious maniacs.

I taught a Reiki class last weekend and one of the students was an older lady who came from a Catholic background but had distanced herself from the church. At one point we were talking about religion and women, and she said her main beef with the Catholic church was their treatment of women. She said that when she was younger, it looked as though the church was wising up and starting to treat women as equals. Then, as she put it: “it was like the Foot from Monty Python came down on us – SPLAT!”

I knew I had to share that with MCat and the MCattery. The Holy “Monty Python” Foot!

Obama is mouthing the boilerplate from AIPAC central.

If only the Palestinians would be like the good Israelis!Like learn the trick of mirroring their good deeds, like stealing the neighbors’ land, hundreds of thousands of thieves get the spoils, and make the victims strangers/outcasts in their own land, while you, the colonizing lawbreakers, remain bestest friends with us, receiving nary a word of reproach (heaps of praise instead) with the billions still flowing in US dollars, along with the Apaches. Control the water, cut off the funds, imprison the people, shoot them, bulldoze them… And come out smellin like roses!

Why cant those dreadful people learn how its done!

Obama msut split and do penance. Horrors there are pictures of him with Edward Said. At events that HAD NO JEWS THERE. BAR and Angry Arab have both posted them.. and posted quotes from years ago.

So he must shaft muslims, distance from anything arabe… and the Palestinians of course must be good little children as they die at the check points and in the refugee camps..

The scariest thing about this “forum” is how it highlights the way that the standard of discourse has plummeted in past years, thanks to the media catering to the most braindead among the populace:

Hey, Soledad, excellent, excellent work, really, really informative.

It was really, really an hour well spent on television.

I TIVOed Planet of the Apes, I think I’ll watch that instead – that would be a more productive use of my time.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!

My 2 cats heard that! (He, who now thinks his name is Jesus and she, whose name is Joey aka Joseph.)

Btw, my one of my middle names was Mary. All French RC girls got that tagged on up here – Quebecois tradition. (I don’t know if it extends beyond la belle province).

I dropped it legally later in life because when I requested a copy of my birth certificate, they said I didn’t exist! My mom had wrongly registered me as “Mary [liberal catnip]” instead of by my actual first name.

Then again, when she was living on an army base with my dad (before I was around – he was a dentist in the army for a brief stint, I guess) she voted for the Communist party candidate. Her English wasn’t very good at the time. She said she just picked the nicest looking name. lol

Not always the sharpest knife in the drawer… That genetic defect is obviously hereditary.

Oh i dunno about the Palestinian controversy

There are plenty who don’t die at checkpoints but are afforded the opportunity to live desperately amid sqaullor.

I of course am being facetious with my use of the word “controversy”. Everything is “controversial” now:

President Beheads Random Tourists on The South Lawn
Democrats Express “Disappointment over the Controversy”

I need a Newspeak Dictionary for all the Orwellian lingo re I/P. “Incursion” for example. “Incursion” is a new type of incidental occassion. The action of a well meaning neighbor ,I suppose , who – while pulling in the shared driveway – just happened to ram a column of tanks though your house while using a helicopter gunship to rain deathfire down upon your fleeing family. A little thing, a bit of a misunderstanding a controversial “disagreement”. Contra-Verse (or veritas) indeed.

“Incursion” is not an illegal INVASION and occupation in opposition to international law. Who invades anymore? Who does anything
invasively when such unpleasantness can be avoided –by “Magic” words? Christ it’s not even a mere “occupation” anymore. It’s become a Profession. As has the manipulative recruiting of teenage suicide bombers who will become “martyrs”, or young soldiers who will become “heroes”.

that she used the criminal tragedy of 9/11 to say that she’s the one that really understands the horror of suicide bombers. Presidential like GWB.

I can’t stand anyone that pimps faux wars to get elected. — Not GWB or Hillary Thatcher.

She was also too stupid not to enable GWB to get us into Iraq (and doesn’t have a clue how to get out).

She’s trading on her husband’s stint as POTUS (just like GWB traded on his daddy’s) and duping a whole of women and feminists that she’s one of them. Needless to say, I will not vote for Hillary if DEMs are stupid enough to nominate her — and for the first time in my life will vote for a third party.

What FDR giveth; GWB taketh away.

I can’t remember who brought it up but Hamdan’s charges have been dismissed too:

In back-to-back arraignments for the Canadian Omar Khadr and Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a Yemeni national, the US military’s cases against the alleged al-Qaida figures were dismissed because, the judges said, the government had failed to establish jurisdiction.

That one’s sure to piss of Bush royally.

Ms Huskey said that amid the confusion, one thing appeared clear. The detainees, held without charge since 2002, were likely to face further delays before having their day in court. “What it does mean for Omar and all the detainees is that they are going to have a whole new process so that everyone can be charged,” she said.

Enough is enough already.

35. Madman in the Marketplace - 4 June 2007

fuck Obey

Washington – “I make no apologies.”

That’s Democrat Dave Obey after the big fight over funding the war.

No apologies for engineering a deal on Iraq that he couldn’t vote for.

“I hate this agreement . . . even though I negotiated it,” he said.

No apologies to anti-war liberals for not stopping a war he calls “misbegotten, stupid and ill-advised.”

“We didn’t have the votes,” he says.

And no apologies to Republicans who accused him of larding the Iraq package with domestic “pork.”

“When they were in charge,” Obey said, they “couldn’t run a two-car funeral in terms of the budget.”

When the battle over Iraq spending came to a head late last month, it had Dave Obey’s imprint. One of the five or six most powerful members of Congress, the cantankerous Wausau lawmaker took fire from the right and the left for an agreement that was perceived by some as a simple Democratic capitulation and by others as making the best of a weak hand.

It was the most important Washington showdown since Democrats captured Congress and Obey, as House appropriations chair, became a steward of the federal purse strings.

It was also a rich example of Obey’s style and method, a blend of anger and passion, rhetorical fisticuffs, cold-eyed deal-making and the sort of long legislative horizon that comes with serving under seven presidents.

“I’m of the view that Democrats were successful in their effort,” says congressional analyst Tom Mann of the Brookings Institution, a view based on the premise that party leaders opposed to the war lacked the votes to impose a withdrawal timetable on President Bush, and that simply refusing to approve funding for Iraq was never a realistic option. [snip]

Obey and ‘charm school’

At a recent party caucus, he erupted when Ohio Democrat Dennis Kucinich said Obey’s bill would privatize the Iraq oil industry. Using a profanity, Obey told Kucinich to “read the …damn language.” After California Democrat Maxine Waters complained that Obey had been rude, Obey told a reporter, “Even I could win a charm school award in a contest with her.” He bluntly told White House negotiators during the war spending talks that “Bush had done more to gut our influence around the world than any president in modern history.” And he’s had sharp words for some anti-war critics, who he says are in “Never Never Land” about political reality on Capitol Hill.

Lilly rejects the notion that Obey’s temperament is much of an impediment in his chairmanship. “It’s not necessarily a bad thing when you’re talking about the effectiveness of a legislator to be thought of as a cranky old chairman,” said Lilly.

Says Obey, who recently marked his 38th year in Congress:

“Sometimes you can sit and go around the mulberry bush for three hours and not say anything. That’s a waste of time. I don’t believe in operating that way.

“I think you get to the bottom line, and bluntness is a way to do that. Washington is so full of B.S. I don’t have the time for it. I don’t have the patience for it. And the day that I do, I’ll quit.”

Fucker.

I am organizing a big response to the media being false to democrats that is going to go around the country and will be a very big deal. [let’s hope he has a ghostwriter] We have already gotten the commitment of the last 2 dem candidates to speak for us. [“us”?] It will be agrouping of the major media critics and we are going to be demanding a change in press behaviour and if they wont give it we will yell until we are heard. I worked in the media producing talk shows for a few years after I worked in politics, my lil sis is a head writer for one of the news channels, my biting their hand is not good for my future, but it is the right thing and necessary if we want to win back the WH…trust me I know much more about this then anyone who has ever been at this site ever…

So back to your favorite…no one else is here. I know about the corps that are supporting Barrack, Dodd , Biden and Richards. I know about certain lawyers and their past deeds that are supporting Edwards, not to even mention what the hedge fund he is with is up to, who is it that you think is so pure…come on…tell me who it is….cause it aint one of our 8… I dont condemn any of them for this, this is how it is, but you and yours seem to only want to hold Hillary to a high and holy standard.

the Dude is- get this – in SHOW BID_ Ness

-03-30.html

In his time, comedy-show producer Tim Howe has seen reporters change from free-spirited optimists into the buttoned-up careerists they are today. That’s one reason he’s bringing his free-swinging show to the Press Club April 1.

Yes, it’s April Fool’s Day. But Howe is not kidding about the show, which will honor the late Hunter S. Thompson and feature Comedy Central vet and humor columnist Will Durst, mainlining to the increasingly self-important D.C. press corps at its home haunt.

Howe, political junkie of 47, Democratic campaign vet and a Clinton pal, is best known for pulling together live comedy shows at times of political focus — such as the national political conventions. But now he’s trying to launch a foundation that will keep the voice of humor from being smothered by the gray suits and the so, so serious opinions. It’s to be called the Will Rogers Washington Comedy Foundation

back a couple posts is the Feb 4 appearance by Edwards on MTP. I went back to it as the NIE became an issue again when he was just here at Google HQ.

He weasels all the way. And about the war.

Forget the title… not too far back.

It’s too far gone for me.. and the point we are at is too desperate. The war is too big, the suffering is too great.

I cannot do it.

53. marisacat - 4 June 2007

Oh right, Gravel said the 4 IWR dopes lacked “moral judgment” not “conscience” – anyway, that was the moneyshot for me. I loved it.

Who the hell talks like that? The simple, honest, ethical thing? My ears thirst… and Kos wants to turn off the spigot.

Now, what I am waiting for is for someone (Gravel? Troublemaker in audience?) to confront the 4, after 4 long years of nothing but easy street and soft soap bullshite for our warmongers, confront Hillary with her silly cya that she never dreamed Bush wouldnt do diplomacy/inspections and exhaust all options before war… Confront her with if she was so damned sure Bush was gonna see the inspections thru and not do war as a first resort (I am so dying to buy the Bklyn bridge), which is what she meant to approve (ya ha) when she signed onto the res, why the hell did she (and the others) not raise holy hell when he totally did NOT do that?

If it was such a fucking big deal to them that he not do the Kabuki with inspectors and ramrod us full speed to war, why no outrage? Why instead did I see her and hers lockstep and salute as Bush set out to commit a brutal crime against humanity with a war of aggression that they claim was counter to the intent of that res?

Because they knew all along and they didnt care. They cared about political skin, not Iraqi skin. Or American skin. Or that of the poor dragooned allies.

My mouse isn’t being cooperative. There’s a Tim Howe in the C&L comments who claims he used to produce labor funded radio shows (and who absolutely hates Nader).

58. supervixen - 4 June 2007

MCat, to give Edwards credit, he has been apologizing for the war for a long time now. Unlike Hill, who keeps trying to pretend that she was voting for something else.

As for weaseling, that’s a given – they are all lawyers.

59. liberalcatnip - 4 June 2007

I just ran across another quote by Howe about Somerby. Hang on…

60. liberalcatnip - 4 June 2007

It’s at CJR (2005):

“He just gets so angry at them, being so irresponsible,” says a close friend, Tim Howe, a longtime Democratic campaigner and now a producer of comedy shows. Somerby, who Howe says is the smartest and most honest person he knows, feels someone must spotlight the failures. “Bob is a good citizen,” Howe says. “Isn’t that the responsibility of a good citizen?”

Someone over at dkos should ask Howe if he knows any good jokes.

61. marisacat - 4 June 2007

Yes I pointed otu the date of his Wapo apology. It was alte 2005 in the piece I did on the MTP.

No sorry it has to end at some point.

Right now they are getting reinforcement that they ahve played it right. They expect the WH. They expect to hold at least one house, maybe both.

As for weasels… no sorry. Cannot support it.

Why waste time to have opposed to war? To then vote for a shit? And by shit I mean useless shit.

62. NYCee - 4 June 2007

Marisa,

Edwards has so not appealed to me since I first eyeballed him awash in DLC stump speeches in early 2003 (before he got poverty religion).

And we know his unflagging salute to Bush’s war during 04.

Im just saying his GodStuff, just up to gays, isnt half bad for him. I will check out the Feb 4 MTP if its a few posts back. I believe I did see him on that show and that he did not fare well. Russert actually put some heat under his seat. Remember how free ride he got it by the press during his last go-round for the WH?

64. liberalcatnip - 4 June 2007

This comment at dkos echos the Nader hatred in the comment at C&L:

as I say, they are getting reinforcement. When the woman screamed at Hillary did she read the NIE, the audience applauded for Hillary after the woman was removed.

Edwards can cosy up to Hillary for approval. She did not read it, so it matters not that he did not. Graham can beg all he wants.

I doubt EITHER read even the summaries they claim to have read.

So really Howe is just making like the big guys.

Prattle religion and sell the war, in back door fashion.

They are still selling war.

69. liberalcatnip - 4 June 2007

Good story about mercs in Iraq at the Independent. Well, not that it’s a “good story”. You know what I mean…

The distinguished reporter Jeremy Scahill claims in his new book, Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army, that mercenary troops in Iraq are even using “experimental ammunition” that US forces are forbidden from firing. These bullets, made of “blended metal”, are designed to shatter on impact, creating “untreatable wounds”. One mercenary recently bragged about the ammo’s impact when he shot an Iraqi with it: “It entered his butt and completely destroyed everything in the lower-left section of his stomach… everything was torn apart.”

Last year, Representative Dennis Kucinich asked Pentagon officials at a Senate hearing if the US Department of Defence would prosecute a private contractor who murdered Iraqi civilians. After being told repeatedly, “Sir, I can’t answer that question,” Kucinich said: “Wow. Think about what that means. These private contractors can get away with murder… They aren’t subject to any laws at all.”

[thank good ole Jerry for that fact]

As he scurried out the door in 2004, Paul Bremer – the first US viceroy to Iraq – issued Order 17, which exempted all mercenaries operating in the country from having to obey the law. He in effect gave these men a licence to kill – and they are using it, every day.

Sanchez, thoroughly discredited (but it does not matter) is shooting his mouth off.

“I think if we do the right things politically and economically with the right Iraqi leadership we could still salvage at least a stalemate, if you will — not a stalemate but at least stave off defeat,” retired Army Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez said in an interview.

Sanchez, in his first interview since he retired last year, is the highest-ranking former military leader yet to suggest the Bush administration has fallen short in Iraq.

“I am absolutely convinced that America has a crisis in leadership at this time,” Sanchez told AFP after a recent speech in San Antonio, Texas.

“We’ve got to do whatever we can to help the next generation of leaders do better than we have done over the past five years, better than what this cohort of political and military leaders have done,” adding that he was “referring to our national political leadership in its entirety” – not just President George W. Bush.

Sanchez called the situation in Iraq bleak, which he blamed on “the abysmal performance in the early stages and the transition of sovereignty.”

He included himself among those who erred in Iraq’s crucial first year after the toppling of the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

::snip::

Well he needs to add that the military leadership is corrupt. Suicide by president.

72. BooHooHooMan - 4 June 2007

from Hillary’s dripping douchebag why as a Independent are you EVEN AT a website that says its for Democrats to elect Democrats?

Ohh brother just wait till you try and come a courting the essential independent vote next year. But then again that’s the deal with the lay down, fall down game.no? My god, for a reasonably intelligent individual it’s taken me years to see it. It still is astounding. – a fuck like this gravitating to the SEIU to contaminate that vestige of labor activism and pick up a little comedy show cash.

73. liberalcatnip - 4 June 2007

I doubt EITHER read even the summaries they claim to have read.

Well she said she was briefed in that quote you provided before and then on Sunday nite she said she’d read the summary. Regardless, she can’t weasel her way out of that incompetence.

Eugene Robinson agrees that it’s “Bush’s war” though.

John Edwards had a point: Where have Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama been these past few weeks while others were shouting to the rooftops about the worsening debacle in Iraq? Sudden attacks of laryngitis? Cat got their tongues?

Clinton has a point, too, and so does Obama. When Edwards called them out at the Democratic presidential debate Sunday night, Clinton was right when she said that this is George W. Bush’s war, not anybody else’s. And Obama, who publicly opposed the war from the beginning, was right to snap at Edwards — who, like Clinton, voted to authorize military action — saying that his righteous outrage was “four and a half years late.”
[…]
For whatever reason, Clinton won’t say she’s sorry. She explains that she thought she was voting for continued weapons inspections — that she never imagined Bush would fire the loaded gun that Congress had just handed him.

What’s done is done, Clinton says, and she’s right that the more urgent question is how to get out of Iraq (although many Democrats still want to talk about how we got in). The party has a right, though, to expect its standard-bearer to lead the antiwar campaign from the front, not the rear.

(That article seems disjointed to me but I’m distracted by the fact that Ron Paul is going to be on TDS and that my mouse needs minor surgery.)

74. marisacat - 4 June 2007

yeah I know they say they read the summary.

But what does that mean.

Exactly nothing. The war was on. Goodness Biden even said so in August of 02. Outloud.

U.S., Iraqi troops control only a third of Baghdad

The New York Times reported earlier on Monday that, according to an internal military assessment and local commanders, U.S. and Iraqi troops controlled 146 of Baghdad’s 457 neighborhoods.

The New York Times said that, according to the one-page military assessment of the crackdown, troops had either not begun operations or still faced resistance in the capital’s remaining 311 neighborhoods.

You can’t trust “internal military assessments” since they lie about everything anyway, so the numbers are probably much lower.

IRAQ: Curfew leaves Bagdhad suburb residents in trouble

BAGHDAD, 4 June 2007 (IRIN) – Clashes between rival Sunni militant groups in the Sunni neighbourhood of Amiriyah in western Baghdad have left residents facing acute difficulties.

In a bid to restore calm after the last week of clashes, the Iraqi authorities and US forces imposed a curfew, adding to residents’ problems.

“This is our seventh day indoors and we have run out of basic essentials,” said Sarhad Abdul-Ghafour Amin, a 48-year-old taxi driver from Amiriyah.

“Shops have been closed for the last week… and we can’t venture out to other areas for fear of being shot by militants or US and Iraqi forces,” Amin, a father of five, told IRIN.

“We have already run out of meat, vegetables, mineral water and fuel for the generator. We have only flour and eggs and are forced to drink dirty water. I have just eight blood pressure tablets left and it will be a real catastrophe for me if I can’t get more,” he added.

On 29 May, fighters from the Islamic Army in Iraq and the 1920 Revolution Brigades clashed with al-Qaeda in Iraq. Iraqi and US troops fanned out in the neighborhood on 31 May and enforced an indefinite curfew.

“My nine-year old son has diarrhoea due to drinking dirty water and I can’t take him to hospital,” said Faiz Mohammed al-Janabi, a 51-year-old government employee from Amiriyah.

“Me and my wife can’t go to work and the children are not able to do their final exams,” al-Janabi added.
”Shops have been closed for the last week… and we can’t venture out to other areas for fear of being shot by militants or US and Iraqi forces.”

“We are in dire need of potable water and food. We are just eating rice with the bread that we baked on 1 June. We have run out of oil and gas for cooking and don’t know what we are going to do,” he added.

An Iraqi army officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the authorities would ease the curfew on 4 or 5 June and allow civilians to vacate or move around the troubled neighbourhood on foot only.

While the Dems want to wait until the faux September redemption that will supposedly set everyone free. Just how do they reconcile that with their “faith”?

80. liberalcatnip - 4 June 2007

Pretty clear what is going on.

Meanwhile, those Palestinian refugees are being shuffled around like human cattle.

Southern checkpoint attacked

The violence in the north spread to a second Palestinian camp on Sunday night when gunmen from the Islamist group Jund as-Sham – Soldiers of the Levant – attacked an army checkpoint outside Ain al-Helweh camp near the southern port city of Sidon. A second attack on Monday left two Lebanese soldiers and two militants dead, and prompted at least 500 Lebanese [they’re going to start attacking their own citizens now?] and Palestinians to flee the camp.

UNRWA has been unable to enter Nahr al-Bared camp since 22 May when its aid convoy came under attack.

The ICRC has also been unable to deliver vital supplies of food and water into the camp, where up to 8,000 people remain caught in the fighting, since last Thursday. The camp has been without mains electricity since 20 May.

The Palestine Red Crescent (PRC) on Sunday evacuated 19 people from Nahr al-Bared, including one wounded, 11 women, two children and two elderly. Today the PRC evacuated at least nine people, one wounded and the rest women, children and the elderly.

And yet there was an announcement by the Lebanese government that everyone who wanted to leave had already gone and that the remaining people would be considered enemy sympathizers – stunningly similar to the line Israel used last year to justify attacks on southern towns where evacuees weren’t able to leave. You’d think someone would grab the moral fucking high ground in situations like that.

Goopr Thomas of Wyoming dead of Leukemia from MSNBC
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19038581/
but CNN noted

“The vacancy caused by his death will be chosen by Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat. However, the seat will not switch parties because, under state law, Freudenthal is required to pick a new senator from a list of three candidates submitted by the GOP state central committee.”

The Central Committee will at least save us the pretense of a real opposition party. I wonder if it was standing law or a deal worked out recently given Johnson’s infirmity….

83. liberalcatnip - 5 June 2007

84. BooHooHooMan - 5 June 2007

Why–o Wyoming wiki

Freudenthal ran for governor of Wyoming on a platform of “aiding existing businesses, encouraging workforce development within the education system and fully collecting minerals taxes,”[1] and defeated the favored candidate, Republican nominee Eli Bebout, an oil and natural gas businessman from Riverton in central Wyoming, 50-48 percent in the November 7, 2002 election.[2] The other 2 percent went to the Libertarian Party nominee. …
During Freudenthal’s term the state has enjoyed a prosperous economy. The petroleum, natural gas, and mineral boom in Wyoming have given the state a budget surplus, projected to be $1.8 billion in 2006.[3] Freudenthal has proposed that the state save $1.2 billion over the next two years.[4] Freudenthal, who enjoys one of the highest approval ratings of any governor at around 68 percent, was endorsed by the National Rifle Association and reelected over the Republican Ray Hunkins in the 2006 Wyoming gubernational election[5], carrying every county in the state, most by landslide margins. As Governor, he is a member of the National Governors Association and the Democratic Governors Association.

I’m sending $0.01 to every politician that solicits money from me, who did not fight till their last breath against the catastrophic failure of 5/24/2007.

Unprecedented Cat. 5 Typhoon headed for Persian Gulf. The Oil Drum has more. We could see that $7 gas, if it rips out enough oil infrastructure in Oman and Iran.

This was our first big chance in a long time to significantly expand our voter base. And look – we have alienated the most active part of our base, and well could loose the fragile newcomers.

We need to show the strength of our convictions with consistent performance, and then a reinvigorated core, sans disappointment and cynicism, can grow the party. Big-time!

Peace is a family value.

Hillary is already lurching far right.
[ New nickname for Hill? Lurch??]

I really think Congress think their little “bargain” with Bush was very clever. Too bad nobody thinks it was clever.

Now nobody has come forward to put thing back together. It’s very demoralising.

is going to kill a lot of the support we gained.

I dare anyone to watch a discussion on Immigration and tell me the blue collar worker comes up in the discussion. It doesn’t, ever. period. Either it’s the poor immigrant or it’s big businesses needs, never what is go for the union worker or store clerk. Try this test sometime. Maybe once in 10 discussions does the American worker come up, and then only to say there are jobs we won’t do. Dems better wise up on immigration quick.

[[ Fuck that, Poopy Pants. Let everyone in whose not packing or wearing explosives, Jack the minimum wage to 15 bucks an hour with a five million dollar fine and revocation of business licensure and top it off with personal liability for exploitation against managers and supervisors in civil actions as well. Jesus running a teenage prostitution ring in a front company doesn’t provide legal shielding. Why should slave labor be tolerated?]]

So many of us are still so naive.

We keep thinking that ego-centrist, corporista, beltway Dems are actually on our side. They are fucking politicians that only care about re-election and power first and the Dem-union label as a distant third or fourth.

We can spin and spin and spin how they voted, but bottom line, they are more aligned with the Repugs and their corporate buds whose life-blood depends on Iraq, the control of middle-east oil, and middle-east contracts, then they will ever be for you and I.

They think it’s a fucking shell game with the John Q. Public Dem.

Don’t believe me, I don’t care.

But, for so many, it’s like the die-hard evangelicals and their un-dying support of the punk in the White House, they’ll never give up the faith.

Because if they do, the whole house collapses upon them.

Sorry for the late night verbosity. I just haven’t any more orifices (orifici?) left.

LOL… b-b-b-b-b-ut! he gave Gonzales a pass for several days for being an Hispanic. Thank God Gonzales was not coming off his third abortion.

RICHARDSON: Well, I am comfortable with that decision.

I — I don’t like abortions. If I’m president, I will have a national goal to reduce abortions. I believe very strongly that we have got to promote initiatives to reduce abortions, to promote adoptions, to find ways also that we promote sexual education and family planning.

So, I believe this is a matter between a woman and her God. It’s not a matter for politicians to decide. I respect the leadership of the pope and my archbishop, who disagrees with me. But I think he is tolerant of my view, as long as I continue to — to advance policies of social justice as a human being.

And I believe government can be a catalyst, Paula, to initiate that social justice, to stand up for those that have been left behind. I believe, also, as a candidate for president, it’s important that we bring people together, that we heal this country that is deeply divided, that we be optimistic and patriotic about the country. And I believe that’s a matter of values, too.

Too funny. NM is at the bottom of the list of everthing. Including poor children .. iirc it has not moved, advanced gotten better in the 5, count them FIVE years this lump has been Governor.

They had the lessers on with Paula Zahn and a tray of canapes from Wallis to Jackson to O’brien to Dena Gallegher who lectures on faith and values at CNN. LOL She used to be iwth the communications office of the Vatican.

Down for the count.

Stick a blackberry in a cassock and vote for it.
